Dynamax Adventure! Growing Shadows

Dynamax Adventure!

Growing Shadows

The Realm of Shadows, reduced from a zone meant for traveling to naught more than a glorified trade in post. The growing number of Shadow Pokemon further reduced as Pokemon falling in battle saw their hearts no longer closing due to pain alone. Images of The Great One being handed out as little more than a mere joke. It was blasphemy of the highest order, and the air rang with eerie silence as not even Dynamax Pokemon stood to roam the Gyms that had seen them so frequently over the past year. Something was coming. Something... sinister.

Shadow Arceus! His very form rising from the decaying land mass that was once the Realm of Shadows, giving new life and power to the Shadows that exist, strengthening the darkness within their hearts and reaching into the darkest corners of Fizzytopia to birth new Shadows from every section of the land. The Great One had to be quelled, but a mere battle against this Legend would be no easy task, as his home in the Realm of Shadows would be nigh unapproachable without severe trials, the Shadow Pokemon there increasing dramatically in power thanks to his awakening, growing in a manner not unlike that of Dynamax Pokemon.

Indeed, spikes of Dynamax energy have popped up all throughout the Realm of Shadows, a phenomenon previously unknown to areas other than the Gyms themselves, and surely a sign of Shadow Arceus' growing power. While it is currently unknown if this energy is as a result of the awakening of Shadow Arceus, or simply being amplified by His emergence, the call has gone out to all trainers to quell The Great One, whatever it takes!

This event will be a Dynamax Adventure, with the ultimate end goal being to take down Shadow Arceus! This means multiple Dynamax Pokemon will be fought in succession, with a few caveats.
  • Dynamax Boss Pokemon may have adjusted health compared to what the raiders are used to
  • Most Dynamax Boss Pokemon will not be able to create shields in battle

Due to the difficulty of this task, all trainers that sign up will be assigned to randomized groups, with the goal being to have balanced groups as close to four members as possible. Each group will be presented with a selection of random Pokemon that they may use during the Dynamax Adventure. While you may bring your own Pokemon for your comfort (and may still collect rewards for role playing with them), they will not be allowed to battle during this time as the effects of Shadow Arceus' presence are currently unknown.

At the end of each battle, you may choose to swap out the Pokemon you are currently using for a copy of the Pokemon you have just defeated. It is highly recommended that you communicate with your squad for all Pokemon choices and swapping, as while it is possible for everyone to use the same Pokemon, it may not be the best decision as you move forward. After you have chosen whether or not to swap, you will be presented with routes you may move through, a number of options from one to three, depending on where you have found yourself in the Realm of Shadows thus far, and your group will vote on where to proceed. Note that if you proceed towards the same route as another group, your groups will be merged going forward.

Signups are open until 12 AM, Monday, May 10th, after which the Dynamax Adventure will begin!

* We do recognize that this may be a long event and that life does happen, as such the standard disqualification rules will be waived during this event. Instead, if you receive two DQ warnings during a battle, you will not be given the option to swap your Pokemon at the end of the battle and will temporarily lose the right to vote on the next route.

The migraines were starting to worsen by the day. There was something horribly wrong, a world-ending even about to happen. He could feel the piercing thoughts permeate his mind, and he could tell by his contracts that this wasn't some run-of-the-mill apocalypse. An eldritch beast of no other was about to awaken... But where?

And that's when news of the rise of the Shadow Arceus. A god whose heart was corrupted beyond repair. Closed off from the world around it, and sinking it into pure chaos and insanity. These were the premonitions he was feeling and knew that there would be no other choice but to fight it. And the stage, of course, was where his first contract was made.

Ethan looked on the Isle of Umbra, riding in on a small boat. This was something that he needed to do alone. No point in endangering Leo here, last time didn't go exactly well for the more light-hearted trainer. Bringing Ozy was going to be a bad idea... Having to rely on that strength would defeat the purpose of this. He needed to prove he'd be able to do this on his own.

But, there was a sort of insatiable hunger that was growing with him. The call to revel in this madness and let his instincts take over. Let his true nature be unleashed, and kill a god. The satisfaction would draw in more and more power, to the point where he'd be unstoppable. Wanton slaughter... That was certainly a tempting idea, but no. There were things he needed to figure out first, and the most important thing was why. Why was this happening?

With the boat soon docking, he jumped out onto the sandy shore. Pure black... The miasma was stronger than last time. Unintelligible whispers in the wind, even if he was the only one rule aware of it. There were other trainers here, seeming to heed the call to take the eldritch god down. But, he felt they didn't rule comprehend what exactly would happen.

May these patrons grant him the strength, cunning, and key to slaying this beast. The depravity needed would be no small margin, and subjecting a random innocent life to this was the sort of cruelty expected out of him. Though, would this help him figure out more of those hazy memories? Why was he such a good conduit to make these sorts of deals?

He looked towards the sky, tasting the acrid air. Yes, things were definitely a lot worse than before. This body was going to be more than capable of handling this. He wasn't the kid locked inside of his own mind. Even if these thoughts weren't his own most of the time, he had the drive and will to put them into action. His own action. And that was enough at times.

But, well, this contemplation soon needed to end. Things weren't going to truly be done and over with until they set out. All he needed to wait was for the innocent lamb to be chosen for him, and brave the corrupted wilds with the group assigned to him. He stared into the abyss and was ready to delve deep.

"Nyar sthtan, Nyar gashanna."

A young man raced over the horizon, sporting a very casual uniform and a chartreuse backpack. His messy dark brown hair contrasted with his pale beige skin and silvery-blue eyes.

"Heard there was a raid happenin' here. I was planning on taking a break, but the opportunity was too exciting to pass up."

This was Elijah; a relatively new trainer that wasn't exactly bursting at the seams with energy, but had the drive to take on practically anything. He'd been walking somewhere along one of Fizzytopia's many routes when he got the notice:

"RAID BATTLE AT THE REALM OF SHADOWS. ALL TRAINERS PLEASE REPORT IF CONVENIENT."

Raid battle? He thought. Elijah wasn't familiar with the term, but it sounded like a fun way to kill time while he was trying to get away from everything for a while. It was probably a little dangerous, but knowing what he'd been through over the past week or so, he'd make it out alive.

And so that's what brought him here to the Realm of Shadows, a locale that he hadn't even heard rumors of before. The air was imbued with what felt like an ominous energy, but Elijah was totally prepared for this.

"...By the way, why's this place so spooky, anyway? And what's a 'Dynamax?' Does it have anything to do with this band that I got after my Trainer registration?"

...Or not.

Inkay

Ah, the taste of coffee. It brought back memories of her undergraduate years and times spent racing to memorize every mechanism, every amino acid…

Selene was sitting in the corner of a run-down, hipster café in New Fizz City, taking a break from her questing and adventuring. The local gyms where she had spent much of her time had temporarily closed, citing a lack of the Dynamax Pokémon that usually kept them busy every month. With a bit of rare free time on her hands, she decided to relax.

She took another long sip of the drink, and looked at the chessboard in front of her. The pieces were clearly taken from Galarian myth--the kings a stylized depiction of Calyrex, the knights carefully carved Glastrier and Spectrier, and so on. It reminded her of her childhood, and the stories her mother read to her before bed. So nostalgic…

A flash of bright lights and a weird squishing sound brought her attention back to the game. On the opposite side of the board was her newest member to her team, Chromatophore, the Inkay’s expression unreadable but his intentions clear. This was the Pokémon equivalent of saying “hurry up.”

Selene sighed. She was losing, badly, to a level 1 Inkay of all things. Though, considering the Revolving Pokemon’s reputation for hypnosis and Chromatophore’s mysterious character, perhaps she had been winning. Just until the little squid decided he was going to play dirty.

Stalling out the inevitable she got up to refill her drink, which earned her what appeared to be a glare from Chromatophore. As she walked to the countertop, the voice of whoever was on TV buzzed loudly in her ear. A newswoman was on the screen, flanked by an Illumise, speaking rapidly about something to do with Shadow Pokémon. She didn’t bother listening; Selene was trying to relax after all, and Shadow Pokémon weren’t in her area of interest or expertise. That was, until she heard:

“Dynamaxed... Arceus...“

Just like that, she snapped to attention. A member of the confidential Beast Killer Project, Selene had spent the past several years pouring over Sinnoh's tales as she helped sculpt a creature in the likeness of the legendary Sinnohian deity. Pushing the boundaries of science, testing every bit of knowledge that she had learned over her numerous years of schooling, she grew attached to what she helped create. Due to the shutdown of the project and the loss of all that progress, she had come to Fizzytopia to start it anew. However, with no lab and no idea how to start, she spent much of her time taking part in Raids, hoping that the gym leaders would have some sort of insight on Pokémon typings, the crutch behind the project. But none of that could compare to the bounty of knowledge an encounter with the creator of the universe itself, the same one Type: Full was based on.

~~~
Chromatophore slowly floated up beside his new human. Something curious had caught her attention, perhaps something of interest that could potentially help further his own goals. The yellow lights atop his mantle glowed brilliantly as the gears turned in his head. Fortunately, she was just as interested in this development as he was. He’d hate to be forced to use hypnosis on her.
Lil' Bluey Don't look back.
What is hidden in the darkness... Tricks full of ill will... You can't see the way forward...
Jess had been troubled ever since she left the Ancient Aerie. The bout against Oricorio had ended abruptly in such a bizarre manner, with no trace left of either bird or battleground following the bright blue explosion. Even the Gym Leader had mysteriously vanished, along with two of her other allies in the fight. Try as she might to contact her friend Zak afterwards, there was no answer. Staring fruitlessly at her PokéGear screen in frustration, she felt a familiar pang of loss she'd experienced many a time before, but never quite as acute as this. For meanwhile, Malice seemed to seeping through the streets of Fizzytopia. Bonds of trust shattered, brawls broken out - with many good citizens caught up in the crossfire. Several fled from the senseless violence, refusing to pick a side. And for the first time... Jess considered joining them.
So why stay? Why set yourself up for more failure? For more pain? Why open yourself up to all the bad you tried to leave behind?
Even the neighboring county annulled its peace treaty and seceded, wanting no part of the political strife, forcing refugees further from their homes. Those that remained were tasked with the monumental challenge of rebuilding from the ashes once again.
The only variable you can control is yourself. You can forget who you are, or you can be who you want to be. That's why you stay. You stay for a second chance.
A whine disrupted her from her reverie, and she looked down to see Link laying his head across her lap with a worried expression, as the Mightyena tenderly licked her fingers with a tentative yet comforting tongue. She forced an awkward smile as she gently petted the hound, who was clearly trying his best to cheer her up. If nothing else, she knew she couldn't abandon her teammates. They'd been through so much together, and would stubbornly stick by each other to the bitter end, come hell or high water.
Just then, Jess's PokéGear pinged, and her eyes lit up as she hurriedly scanned the notification. Her heart sank though when she recognized the message was merely another Raid alert. However, weren't the existing Gyms supposed to be closed for a month, with the Power Spots currently under control? She frowned in confusion as she read the text closer, staring at the attached image of "The Great One" in awe. While it resembled the Primal Dialga that had been successfully subdued, this creature's sinister appearance was even more impressive - a malevolent being spoken of only in myth: Shadow Arceus.
"Hm... So this guy considers himself the Ruler of Shadows, eh?"
Midna lazily reached over Jess's shoulder and plucked the PokéGear from the girl's grasp, glowering at the display in disgust. Fi floated over to the Sneasel's side, as Link glanced at the sword for any useful information, sensing something of great import about the unknown entity.
"I have insufficient data on this monster. Its enormous size and ominous aura cannot be compared with previously encountered monsters."
She stated vaguely but forebodingly, as Jess snatched her machine back from Midna with a glare of irritation. The Sneasel raised an eyebrow at the normally mild-mannered human's annoyed behavior, but shrugged as she merely wandered off again to another section of the Base. As Jess continued to gaze at the bestial monster on the gadget's monitor, a growing suspicion began to form in her gut. Was this the source of spite spreading throughout the land? Or some kind of diversion meant to distract from dissension by providing a common enemy to unite against? Either way, were their numbers even enough to overcome the odds and take it down at this time? Many had left in droves, although there did seem to be some previous residents returning in their place...
She shook her head. In the end, it didn't matter. Right now she just needed something to direct her own anger towards, and if this was the future then she may as well face it head-on.
"Right then. Let's go defeat this so-called 'Shadowlord'..."
-
...Back at the area where the Ancient Aerie Gym once stood, Sheik surveyed the remains of the ruined structure in solemn silence. Unbeknownst to the participants, the Houndour had been watching events unfold from high above the cliffs. Dropping down to the crater, Sheik sniffed the air before suddenly whipping around to deflect a dagger-like feather shot from the direction of a large rock. Crouched atop the boulder was the dancing bird from before (now a relatively normal size), as it bowed with a flourish in recognition of the target's satisfactory reaction time.
"I see your skills have not diminished, My Grace."
Sheik's growling ceased as the pup immediately relaxed in the avian's announced presence.
"My mentor taught me well, how to survive on my own... Is it really you, Impa?"
"Indeed. I told you we'd meet again, did I not? Although I must ask you forgive my current form, for the Shades have taken their toll..."
The fowl fluttered down to greet her former charge and pupil with a warm embrace, before switching back to a sternly serious expression.
"I'm afraid there isn't much time. The Calamity draws near, and the Imprisoned will soon awaken. How goes your spiritual training?"
The Houndour's head hung in shame.
"Despite my efforts, the power of my ancestors still eludes me. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong... And yet," Sheik muttered quietly under breath, "He has already found the Sword that seals the Darkness..."
Impa wrapped a consoling wing around the sulking canine in reassurance.
"Do not worry, I am sure the Goddess's light will shine upon you soon. As for the Chosen One, I tested his abilities in combat, and while they seem adequate, I fear from what I observed they are not sufficient enough. He is not yet ready to face the Calamity at this rate, given he wasn't able to prevent the Ultimate Weapon from being deployed..."
At that moment, a rumble shook the earth, followed by a distant roar as the sky above seemed to darken, sun swallowed by enveloping gloom. A deep crimson Blood Moon rising in its place, eclipsing entirely. Both Pokémon paled upon realizing they were perhaps shorter on time than they thought as they took off sprinting, racing towards where the Shades were beginning to gather...
OoC - Signing up. Let's see how this goes.
Also teaching 1x TR SHADOW BALL & 1x TM FOUL PLAY to Oricorio-S.
A Pidove flew into the house on the preserve, a letter tied to its leg. "Pii!" It called out. Darik was sitting at the table, reading a notebook intently and didn't notice. "PII-DOOOVE!" The bird cried out, louder, but Darik was still too engrossed in his reading to notice. The bird puffed up its chest in anger, and charged at him with a Quick Attack, striking him in the side.
"Ow!" he shouted, falling off his chair. "What the- oh, we have mail." He untied the letter from the Pidove's foot.
"Uncle Darik? Are you okay?" his youngest nephew burst in the back door. "I heard you shout"
"It's fine, PJ. We got some mail, and I was too busy to notice. This little one made sure I saw it, is all." He patted the Pidove's head lightly, rubbing his side with the other hand. The Pidove cooed proudly, and took back off to the post office. "Now let's see," Darik said as he opened the letter. "... adventure... rental Pokemon... darkest of unholy memes... Raid Shadow Legends... hm... Looks like the Fizzy League needs some adventurers to help take care of a situation inolving a Shadow Arceus, journeying through some kind of lair with Rental Pokemon."
"Are you going to go?" PJ asked.
"I would, but I've been working on my research and I have a trip planned already."
"What kind of research?"
"Well, it's something your father and I were researching some time ago, before you or your brother were born. He had a psychic powers from childhood and we were looking into possible relations between the psychic powers of humans and those of Pokemon. I'd only recently gotten together all of the documents we'd gathered on it. But why don't you go on this Dynamax adventure, PJ? I'm sure it'll be a great learning experience."
"That sounds like it will be fun! Come on, Lemon, let's get ready!"
"Actually," Darik interjected. "You won't be able to use Lemon in those battles. You'll have to use some rental Pokemon they offer. As well, I'm also going to ask to borrow Lemon for my trip." He could feel the Watchog's gaze harden on him. "I can't bring my Mightyena, they'll put the Psychic Pokemon, and people, on edge too much, and the research suggests too much Dark energy in the vicinity could interrupt the flow of psychic energies. I wouldn't be able to learn anything. But Lemon is strong and versatile enough to be of a lot of use to me. And we'd be back about the same time." He turned his attention to the glaring Watchog "And I wouldn't leave PJ without protection of his own. He can bring the bash brothers along. They should be more than capable of keepng PJ safe." He pulled out two Balls, and sent out Landstar the Dewott and Gilford the Pignite.
Lemon's gaze softened, though not by much. He wasn't thrilled about this, clearly, but he knew it made sense. He turned to PJ. He'd follow his direction on the issue.
"It'd be weird going without Lemon..." PJ said. "But if he can help you, then that's important, too." He hugged Lemon. "On one condition." he said to Darik. "When we all get home, you're going to help me teach Lemon more cool new moves."
"Agreed," Darik laughed. He knelt by Lemon and spoke softly to him "You want to see PJ get stronger, right? When, not if, but when, PJ makes it back safely, and you see him again, you'll get to know just how strong you helped him become."
"Come on, Lemon!" PJ called out, dashing to the stairs. "Help me get packed and ready!"
I'm game for this. Sounds like a lot of fun
Celyn stifled a yawn as xe walked out of xyre bedroom, making way to the kitchen where Krelia and Drake were already situated and glued to the Kitchen TV that was only really used for news and cooking shows.
"In addition, we've received reports that various locales in the Realm of Shadows have been identified as Power Spots, meaning the possible appearance of further Dynamax Pokémon. In addition to giving a live report, I intend to assist in any battles to come. We have been advised against using any of our own Pokémon out of concern for any unprecedented effects of the energy at work here, and will instead be provided Pokémon to work with…”
“Great if it’s not one issue it’s another, Drake sighed and took another bite of his breakfast while Krelia nodded and rubbed her face.
“Er… morning, but what exactly is going on?” Celyn asked as xe grabbed a cup of coffee and some toast, taking a seat at the breakfast bar. “ Well like home, Fizzytopia has had its own slew of unusual and strange events and occurrences. Once we had some… Lickilicky that showed up around Halloween that Wasn’t natural by any means, Then of course we had the Primal reversion of Dialga which allowed us to bring you through from home… Krelia started to explain but couldn’t help but yawn, apparently she also had only just awoke
“ Now we have reports of Shadow Pokemon popping up and Dynamaxing all throughout the Realm of Shadows… Including that of Arceus.” Drake finished up explaining for Krelia.
Shadow Arceus??? How was such a being capable of being shadowed when… well it seemed that no one in this universe had even captured the legendary deity, young or old?
“I’m going out there. I want to investigate this.”
Celyn left no room for argument and got up to go prepare to leave.
Those familiar with the presence of Dynamaxed Pokémon popping up at Fizzytopia's various Power Spots might also know of the news team that had made a name for themselves with their live coverage of such raid battles. Hell, some people might only be familiar with the raids because of this live news coverage. As such, when word of this Shadow Arceus reached every corner of the Fizzytopia region, those on the scene would surely expect the familiar whirring of helicopter blades that were even present during the Primal Dialga incident. Alas, that sound was absent from this potential calamity.
In its place however, a purple van pulled up, the sides of which bore the logo of the recently-founded Sludge Wave TV- the number 110, with the 0 doubling as the skull in the skull and crossbones. And as the doors opened, out came none other than Diana Macks and Marv Liss. No longer with Channel 890, no longer employed by Fizzytopia TV, and thus no longer able to make use of their iconic news helicopter, they now drove the Sludge Wave TV news van, which, while an objective step down from a freaking helicopter, was nevertheless proving quite useful. In no time at all, Marv had his camera at the ready, and as he gave the thumbs up, Diana, microphone in hand, spoke up.
"I'm here at the Realm of Shadows, here to investigate the reports that have surfaced of the appearance of a Dynamaxed Shadow Arceus," Diana said into the camera. "In addition, we've received reports that various locales in the Realm of Shadows have ben identified as Power Spots, meaning the possible appearance of further Dynamax Pokémon. In addition to giving a live report, I intend to assist in any battles to come. We have been advised against using any of our own Pokémon out of concern for any unprecedented effects of the energy at work here, and will instead be provided Pokémon to work with," she added. As she spoke, her Illumise, who was fluttering around worriedly, flew close to her Trainer. Diana did not change expression or drop her professional demeanor, but did pull Sweet into a gentle, comforting hug. "Though we know very little at the moment as to what exactly is actually going on here, I intend to get to the bottom of this. Reporting for Channel 110, I'm Diana Macks."
"...and, cut. That's it for now," Marv said, lowering his camera, revealing the Volbeat clinging to his shoulder as though for dear life. "I don't mind saying, Diana, this is... unnerving."
"Oh, absolutely," Diana agreed, dropping the no-nonsense demeanor she showed on camera, and holding Sweet closer still to her. "But we got this, Marv," she added. "We were able to get through the Primal Dialga incident, after all."
"We weren't in on the action ourselves, though," Marv pointed out.
Diana smirked. "Then what are you worried about? You're not battling, you're just filming."
"Well, it's you I'm worried about," Marv persisted. "You are going to be in on the battling, and you won't even be using Sweet."
Diana sighed. "...yeah, I know, it's scary," she conceded. "But I'm not gonna give up, Marv," she added. "Just like back with Primal Dialga- this isn't just about getting the scoop of the century, this is about overcoming a threat and making sure the people know what went down."
"Illu!" Sweet nodded in agreement- scared as she was by all that was going on, Diana's Illumise couldn't help but smile at her Trainer's determination.
At this, the Volbeat clinging to Marv smiled as well. "Bebeat!" agreed Bright.
"...well, if Bright and Sweet believe in you, who am I to disagree?" Marv conceded, betraying a small smile. "Let's do this."
Catherine wasn't sure what exactly she was reading. Raid battles...? Dynamax? She hadn't really read the owner's manual on the Dynamax Band she'd been given upon moving here. No, her attention was focused on the other half of the notice that she was browsing on her P★DA.
Shadow...Arceus!?
"What in Celebi's name..." Catherine said, worry growing rapidly in her heart like mile-a-minute as she read of Shadow Pokemon, more specifically of a Shadowfied Arceus, running amok in a particular part of the region. Surely, Cipher hadn't gone and dragged themselves from the grave again, had they? No, it would have made the news if they had. Still, Catherine's panicked research brought her to a far less dire revelation: it seemed Shadow Pokemon were less artificial here, and more the product of some kind of preternatural process that few truly understood. Still...
"Do you want to go help, Catherine? We only just got here, I'm not sure if we're strong enough yet, and you only just got Laura..." Clarisse offered gently.
"You'd be right, ordinarily, but it seems like the government is scrambling a roster of rental Pokemon for the task. It seems the amount of this 'Dynamax energy' stuff in the area is really huge, so they're only having Pokemon that have been well acclimated to such things be used for the endeavor." Catherine replied, scrolling further through the notice.
"Is it really wise to just throw this Dynamax power around so freely, then? It sounds dangerous." Clarisse hedged.
"Nah, I overheard a couple of the shopkeeps at the Adoption Center, even the places where normal Raid Battles happen are safe for any old Pokemon." Laura replied. "This sounds like a pretty big deal, so if you want to pitch in, go ahead."
"Alright then. It sounds like you two should be fine if you stay in your Poke Balls. I'm not exactly familiar with these Raid battles quite yet, so I think I'll still have you both with me just in case. Last resort for if things go polar-south, I promise." Catherine said, closing her P★DA and gearing herself up to head out, returning her Pokemon in the process.
Hopefully this would be a good decision.
(OOC: Count me in, baby!)
