Jake was in agreement of the idea, and as the hover bot quietly took its position, Keith and Willa turned to each other and nodded. Then, they turned back to the battlefield. Willa let go of Phantump, allowing him to float forward onto the battlefield.

Keith, meanwhile, threw the Friend Ball. "Albus, let's go!" he exclaimed as the ball split open to unleash a Kakuna onto the battlefield.

"Hi, Albus!" Phantump said cheerily as the Bug/Poison-type appeared beside him. "This is my first time battling, and we're teaming up!"

"Kaku, Kakuna!" Albus replied happily. He didn't move much, of course, being a Kakuna, but he still looked ready for action.

Jake nodded, as Keith sent out the Pokémon he would be using, a Kakuna named Albus. Phantump greeted Albus cheerily. Both Pokémon moved onto the battlefield.

Kakuna, the Cocoon Pokémon. A Bug- and Poison-type. Kakuna remains virtually immobile as it clings to a tree. However, on the inside, it prepares for its coming evolution, heating up its shell.

Jake checked his Pokédex momentarily, and then tossed his Pokéball into the air. Out popped a Starling Pokémon, his Starly. This Starly was colored differently from most other Starly, being colored like a Taillow instead.

"Starrr!" Starly trilled in excitement, flapping his wings.

The Aura Guardian grinned at Lucario. "Wanna battle again?"

I can't wait! replied Lucario. He stepped onto the battlefield, ready to battle.

The referee gave its robotic call. On the right, visitors Keith Masters and Willa Carnet, with their Kakuna and Phantump. On the left is our Jake Celeste, with his Starly and Lucario. May the battle begin!

~~~
"Allow me to do the honors this time!" declared Jake. "Starly, nail that Kakuna with a Quick Attack! Lucario, use Foresight on Phantump!"
"Star, Star, Starly!" cried Starly. Surrounded in a burst of white light, he zoomed quickly towards the seemingly immobile Kakuna.
Lucario closed his eyes and concentrated, his four head appendages rising in the process. With his aura vision, he located Phantump. Lucario opened his eyes, which glowed bluish-white and shot a "flashlight beam" of the same color at Phantump. The attack would negate the Stump Pokémon's immunity to Normal- and Fighting-type moves.
The battle began! Jake's Lucario couldn't wait to get back in on the action, and Jake also sent out what Keith very briefly believed to be a Taillow, before realizing it was in fact a Starly! "Interesting, "Willa remarked. "I've never seen a Starly colored like a Taillow before."
"Same here," Keith agreed.
With that, Jake gave the orders- Starly was speeding towards Albus, while Phantump's immunities were stripped away by Lucario's Foresight. Keith knew Quick Attack would come far too fast for Albus to defend with Harden, but he wasn't too concerned with that. "Albus! Counter!" he exclaimed.
"Kaku!" exclaimed Albus. A reddish aura came over his yellow shell as Starly slammed into him... only to be flung away with twice the force he'd come charging in with in the first place!
"Uh... um..." Phantump murmured worriedly as Lucario's Foresight took effect.
"It'll be fine, Phantump!" Willa promised. "Use Confuse Ray!"
"R-right!" nodded Phantump. His eyes glowed brightly as he launched a blast of befuddling energy at Lucario with intent to confuse.
"Now follow up with Leech Seed!" Willa commanded.
"Albus, use Ice Beam on Starly!" Keith ordered.
Bonk! Starly's Quick Attack connected, but Albus had time to use Counter, dealing extra damage to Starly on impact. The small bird staggered back, but righted himself in the air.
"No big deal," Jake said to Starly, consoling him a bit. "Try to shrug it off."
Meanwhile, Phantump used Confuse Ray, unleashing a blast of energy designed to confuse.
"You know better than that, Lucario!" Jake encouraged. "Dodge that Confuse Ray and counterattack with Copycat! Aim it at the Kakuna!"
Lucario nimbly jumped away, dodging Phantump's Confuse Ray. He closed his eyes and concentrated once again, recalling how Phantump had used that attack. He opened his eyes and surrounded himself in a dark purple ghostly glow, all while his four head appendages were rising with aura. Then, Lucario formed a yellow sphere in his hands—Confuse Ray. Lucario thrust the Confuse Ray at Albus, intending to disrupt the opponent.
Just then, Willa and Keith gave their next round of orders, having Phantump use Leech Seed and ordering Albus to use Ice Beam.
"Starly, dodge the Ice Beam!" Jake called out. "Cut through the Leech Seed with a Wing Attack on Phantump!"
In response, Starly swerved in the air, dodging the Ice Beam. His wings glowed a brilliant white, and he charged at the Leech Seed first. The Wing Attack cut right through it. The Starling Pokémon then changed course, heading right for Phantump with a super-effective Flying-type move.
Jake was rolling with it pretty well, with Lucario not only dodging Confuse Ray, but using Copycat to throw that move right back at them- aiming it at Albus, even! "Albus, dodge it!" Keith exclaimed.
"Kaaaaakuna!" Albus exclaimed. He fired a strand of String Shot up at the ceiling, then reeled it in quickly once it stuck, lifting himself into the air just in time to evade the orb of confusion.
Phantump, meanwhile, had to deal with Starly bearing down on him at high speeds, Wing Attack having sliced clean through the Leech Seed. Phantump squeaked in terror as Starly streaked straight towards him. "Phantump! Branch Poke!" Willa exclaimed. Phantump hastily complied, turning his head so Starly would ram right into one of his pointy branches instead. And with how fast Starly was coming, it wasn't gonna have much time to work around this, if any time at all.
But Keith and Albus weren't just forgetting about Lucario! Keith gestured towards the Fighting/Steel-type. "Thunder Wave!" he called out.
"Kaaaaaakuna!" replied Albus, taking aim with his stinger and unleashing waves of electrical energy that would surely lock up Lucario's muscles and paralyze it.
Keith reacted fast enough for him to tell Albus to use String Shot. The Kakuna shot thread at the ceiling and latched himself on, avoiding the Confuse Ray. The Cocoon Pokémon then shot a series of shockwaves at Lucario that intended to induce paralysis.
"Wow, I didn't know a Kakuna could move so fast," Jake remarked, as a compliment. "Lucario, avoid the Thunder Wave with Detect!"
Lucario's eyes glowed white, just like when he used the move before, and the Thunder Wave went around him harmlessly.
Jake watched as Starly flew right into Phantump's Branch Poke. It was nothing to worry about, though. One of Starly's glowing wings clashed with the Grass-type move, and the energy that was released pushed both Pokémon back. Neither attack had won out.
"Bring it on!" Jake called. "Starly, go at Phantump with a Quick Attack! Surround it with the move!"
Starly quickly readied a Quick Attack and flew around Phantump in tight circles that were too fast for the eye to follow, waiting for the right time to strike. After a few seconds...
"Now! Tackle him!" shouted Jake.
Starly broke out of his circle and zoomed inward. Ideally, he would have rammed into the Stump Pokémon head on. Starly then flew out of the way, as necessary for Jake's next move.
The young Aura Guardian looked at Lucario and winked, and instantly, Lucario knew what to do. He used Psychic, detaching Albus the Kakuna from the ceiling, and shot the yellow Cocoon Pokémon at Phantump. If all went as planned, the two of Jake's opponents would collide with each other. Even if Phantump managed to dodge, Albus would at least hit the ground.
Keith grinned as Jake complimented Albus's speed. "Albus is no slouch," he replied. "You should meet his parents. Takes after 'em both."
The fight raged on, however, with Starly surrounding Phantump with Quick Attack before striking at an unexpected angle with Tackle, sending Phantump reeling just as Lucario used Psychic to sever the String Shot and send Kakuna plummeting- right towards Phantump.
"Albus!" Keith exclaimed.
"Phantump!" Willa called out.
"Oh! Albus!" Phantump exclaimed- once he'd righted himself and cleared his head, he noticed Albus falling right towards him. Floating upwards, Phantump reached out and caught his friend in his arms.
"Kaaakuna," Albus murmured appreciatively.
"You're very welcome," Phantump smiled.
"Phew," Keith shakily chuckled. "Alright, let's get ready to fight back!" he added. "Albus, we'll use Psychic as well!!"
"Phantump, follow up with Leech Seed!" Willa commanded.
Albus and Phantump nodded to each other before setting to work. The idea was simple- immobilize and damage Starly with Psychic, thereby preventing it from outmaneuvering the Leech Seed. And, for good measure, Albus would then telekinetically throw Starly at Lucario, just as a bit of payback.
It was certainly impressive how Phantump managed to catch Albus in those stubby hands of his. To add to that, the Kakuna released Psychic waves which enveloped Starly in a faint blue glow. Phantump shot another Leech Seed at the little Starling Pokémon.
Sure, Starly couldn't do anything about the Leech Seed hurtling towards him, being suspended in the air...
But Lucario could.
"Slice open that Leech Seed, Lucario!" Jake called urgently. "Metal Claw, let's go!"
Quickly, Lucario ran towards Starly and the Leech Seed. With a flying leap, he clawed at the energy-sucking attack with his hand spikes, which were now three-fingered claws.
Spoiler: show
Slash! The Leech Seed was torn apart yet again.
It was only then that Lucario heard Starly give an alarmed chirp and turned towards Starly, as Albus telekinetically carried him right towards Lucario. Keith seemed to want to do to Jake what Jake had done to him.
Fortunately, Jake had dealt with such situations before, and had Lucario step right between Starly and the opposing two Pokémon. As Starly got closer and closer...
"Lucario, duck now!" shouted Jake.
With a swift duck, Lucario avoided the telekinetically levitated Starly, who sailed right over him—and headed right for Albus, again. The Kakuna couldn't Counter Starly now, the bird Pokémon wasn't using an attack. He was simply zooming at a high speed towards his opponent. Lucario even took hold of Starly with his own Psychic, guiding Starly and making sure he did not miss his target, the Kakuna. The two Pokémon fought for control with their respective Psychic attacks.
As Keith supposed he ought to have seen coming, Jake was quite prepared to have his own strategy thrown back at him. Not only did Lucario slice through the Leech Seed with Metal Claw, it even used Psychic to keep Starly on track as it zoomed towards Albus. Not in any sort of attack, just flying in for an impact- Counter wouldn't work since no actual attack was taking place here.
"No!" Phantump cried out defiantly, holding onto Albus. "Not my friend!" And the Ghost/Grass-type was off, putting his hovering capabilities to full use, zipping in all directions to try and outmaneuver Starly.
"Good, Phantump!" Willa grinned. "Keep it moving, and use Branch Poke on Starly as soon as you have an opening!"
"Albus, Iron Defense, let's go!" Keith added.
It was then that Phantump came to Albus's rescue, lifting him into the air and zipping in all directions. Phantump readied a Branch Poke, while Albus braced for impact with Iron Defense.
Well, Iron Defense would do nothing against what Jake would do next.
"Lucario, hit 'em with an Aura Sphere!" he shouted. Aura Sphere was a Special-attacking move that never missed, tracking the opponent's aura and ensuring a hit despite Phantump's erratic movement.
Lucario formed a sphere of blue energy between his hands and launched it at Phantump and Albus. Hopefully it would keep them from getting to Starly. Even if it wouldn't, Starly let loose a Growl at that very moment, sending sound waves through the air to intimidate the two opponents and lower their Attack.
Willa gritted her teeth as Lucario unleashed Aura Sphere- that was guaranteed to be right on target no matter what, and with Phantump currently vulnerable to Fighting moves, there was no chance of getting out of that unscathed. But Phantump was determined nonetheless, braving even the Growl to land a hit with Branch Poke. But between the decreased Attack power and the poor type matchup, the move wasn't that effective at all.
Moreover, there was still the matter of the Aura Sphere honing in on them, but Keith was ready for that one. "Albus! Bide!" he commanded.
"Kaaaaaku!" exclaimed Albus, taking on a soft white glow. Taking the cure, Phantump held Albus in front of him like a shield, and with his friend's help, Albus took the full force of the Aura Sphere.
"Phantump, quickly, use Growth!" Willa called out.
"R-right!" Phantump nodded, forcing his ghostly body to grow just a little, more leaves sprouting from his branches as his offensive power increased. If Willa had a plan, she wasn't about to give any spoilers just yet, and what was more, Albus was proving to be an effective means of defense, and that wasn't even considering what would happen when he was finished storing energy...!
The determined Phantump pushed through the Growl and landed his Branch Poke on Starly, albeit a weak one. Starly brushed off the attack, but he gave Jake a signal with a wave of his wing.
Meanwhile, Albus the Kakuna determinedly took the Aura Sphere by himself, and readied a Bide to use that to his advantage.
Phantump used Growth, removing the Attack drop by boosting the stat, and raising his Special Attack stat as well.
After looking over his Pokémon, Jake realized that they looked a bit battered. "Lucario, heal up with Life Dew now!" he called.
Lucario nodded and formed a sphere of revitalizing water in his hands. He released it into the air, where it exploded into sparkly droplets of water. They splashed onto Lucario and Starly, restoring a quarter of each of their health.
Knowing what Bide did, Jake decided to use that against Albus and Keith, by leaving Albus alone. It was a crazy idea, but if what Jake was planning went through, then it just might work.
In case Albus purposely tried to take a hit, Lucario first used Psychic to hold him in place so he couldn't interfere. Lucario was careful not to actually deal any damage. While Lucario was using Psychic, he would also be carrying out another plan.
"Lucario, Starly, go all-out! Give it all you've got!" Jake called next. "Lucario, use Work Up to boost your stats before attacking Phantump with Dark Pulse! Starly, absorb some of the Dark Pulse's power into your own Wing Attack! Concentrate on Phantump!"
Let's do this! Lucario gave a determined battle cry as he surrounded himself with a red glow that boosted both of his offensive stats. He released a beam of swirling Dark energy from between his hands at Phantump.
Starly sprang into action as well, surrounding his wings with a solid white light. He rode on top of the Dark Pulse like a current, and gradually his wings darkened to a sinister purple color as they collected some of the Dark energy. Together, Starly and the Dark Pulse headed straight for the Stump Pokémon.
Lucario went for Life Dew, healing both itself and Starly a little bit. And then...
"Uh... what... I- I can't move Albus! He's stuck!" Phantump exclaimed, trying to pull Albus away, but the Kakuna was stuck in place by Lucario's Psychic.
"Phantump, let go-" began Willa.
"Wait!" Keith interrupted. He whispered urgently to Willa. "They're trying to not attack Albus, so right now he's Phantump's best defense, and take it from me, Phantump could do worse!"
Willa looked at Keith, then nodded. "...Stay there, then, Phantump," she said.
Lucario and Starly were then going all-out, launching into an intense combination of Dark Pulse and Wing Attack, all aimed right at Phantump. But, all Phantump had to do was maneuver himself so Albus was between him and the oncoming attacks. As a bonus, surely the Dark-type move would disrupt the Psychic that was holding Albus still. And yet, as Starly was rushing straight towards them, with the powerful Dark Pulse coming along, Phantump whimpered audibly. Even Albus made a small, worried sound as he attempted to take in as much of the intense attacks as he could for Bide purposes.
BOOM!
Keith and Willa both winced as the attacks landed with explosive impact. The ensuing smoke cloud obscured everyone's vision for at least a minute. And as it cleared... Phantump was still floating in midair, and the Kakuna he held was vibrating with all the energy he'd taken in.
"Are you two OK?" Keith called.
By way of an answer, Phantump wordlessly and gently placed Albus on the ground, then turned slowly back to his opponents, a surprisingly intense look in his eyes.
"Ka, Kakuna!" Albus called back to Keith.
Keith grinned. "Then let 'er rip, Albus!" he exclaimed.
"KAAAAAKUNAAAAAAAAAA!!!" Albus bellowed, letting loose a forceful beam of pure energy right towards Lucario, his Bide fully charged and then some.
"Phantump?" Willa asked. "Are you OK?"
For a moment, Phantump said nothing. And then, with a sudden scream, the Stump Pokémon slammed his ghostly tail into the ground. Which normally wouldn't have been all that impressive, were it not for the minor detail that doing so sent an energy pulse rippling throughout the battlefield. A greenish aura came over Phantump's entire body, and all at once, four thick, spiky vines erupted from the ground, coming for the opponents with great force.
Willa's eyes went very wide. "Wh... h-how..."
"Phantump knows Frenzy Plant?" Keith murmured.
"E-evidently!" Willa nodded, a small smile coming over her face as the shock slowly wore off. "Go for it, Phantump!" Phantump's only response was to continue screaming angrily as he powered the supercharged vines that were moving in to attack those who had hurt not only him but also his friend.
Quickly, Phantump dashed behind Albus the Kakuna to avoid the onslaught of attacks. Albus took in as much of the Dark Pulse and Wing Attack as he could, and then unleashed it in a beam of pure white energy—Bide.
"Lucario, Detect, now!" Jake commanded.
Lucario stood his ground, and as his eyes flashed white, he held his palm forward. The Detect effectively split the Bide around Lucario and protected him from harm. One danger averted!
But then, Jake, Lucario and Starly saw a frenzy of vines rushing towards them, courtesy of Phantump. Jake didn't care what attack it was, he acted immediately.
"Starly, fly high into the sky!" called Jake. "Soon you'll be too high for the vines to reach! But just in case, ready a Wing Attack! Lucario, as the vines head for Starly, go low to the ground and sever the vines from their roots! Use Metal Claw!"
The vines reached for Starly, but he spun in a spiral, shredding the vines that got too close, with Wing Attack. Meanwhile, the other vines arced down to attack Lucario.
Take that! Lucario shouted, as he crossed his claws in front of him and delivered a steely Metal Claw attack. The move shredded part of the vines that headed for him.
Just then, Jake got an idea. Lucario caught on almost immediately, even without Jake saying anything.
The Aura Pokémon's eyes glowed whitish-blue, and a Psychic glow of the same color surrounded the remaining vines. They started to move to Lucario's will, and changed course so that half of them headed for Albus, and the other half right for Phantump! Phantump could probably do little, as a powerful move like Frenzy Plant would take a lot out of him. Of course, Lucario would also expend a sizable amount of energy trying to control the vines. That was why he and Starly eliminated some of them first.
While that was happening, Starly rushed in towards Phantump also, spinning like a drill to execute an impromptu "Spiral Wing" with his Wing Attack.
Jake was quick to act in response to the Frenzy Plant, but he- along with everyone else, it seemed- turned out to have been grossly underestimating what Phantump was capable of. The vines continued to snake out of the ground, seemingly endless, rising as high as Starly could fly, compensating almost immediately for whatever Lucario sliced away with Metal Claw. Then, Jake and Lucario had the idea of turning the vines back with Psychic, but as soon as Keith saw this taking place, he stepped up to help. "We'll use Psychic as well, Albus!" he called out.
"Kaaaaaku!" exclaimed Albus, his eyes glowing blue as he too employed psychic power on the vines, specifically to counteract the effects of Lucario's Psychic.
Willa said nothing, watching Phantump intently. The small stump didn't seem to be tiring out just yet, but the way he continued screaming and thrashing as he poured more power into the Frenzy Plant... something about that didn't seem quite right to her. Whatever he was doing, it was working, as the vines started to break free from Lucario's control and focus upon pummeling the opponents (including the oncoming Starly, but Willa couldn't help but wonder just how much control over this awesome power Phantump actually had... Something didn't feel right to her.
Jake gritted his teeth. As Albus fought Lucario's Psychic with his own, Jake realized that this was a lost cause. Two could very well beat one at this, and the vines once again went for Lucario and Starly. Now, Starly's path to his target was blocked, and he had to abandon his Wing Attack. Some vines headed for him, and Starly was forced to start flying away from them.
But wait. Instead of controlling the vines, could Jake have his Pokémon disrupt the opponents who were controlling the vines? Jake noticed that Albus the Kakuna had taken a lot of damage, could he sustain any more? Well, why not see!
"Lucario, attack Albus with Psychic! For real!" Jake ordered. "Starly, fly away from the vines that are chasing you, and toward Phantump!"
Just then, Lucario proceeded to move his Psychic control to Albus, and the motionless Kakuna would ideally be flung into the air, then slammed into the ground, courtesy of Lucario's Psychic. Jake planned to let Lucario repeat this action, but now that Lucario wasn't resisting the vines anymore, they got to him and tightened their grip, raising him into the air. He gave a cry of alarm.
"Don't panic!" called Jake. "Lucario, Detect! Starly, Quick Attack! Fly towards Phantump!"
Lucario's eyes glowed white as he used Detect, shimmering and seemingly disappearing out of the vines' grip. He reappeared, out of the vines' reach. He concentrated on Albus once more, continually lifting and bringing down the Kakuna on the ground with his Psychic powers.
Jake had to be wary, though; repeated use of a protecting move like Detect could result in the move failing. He made a mental note to himself: This use of Detect should work, but if you use it again, you risk it failing. Just stick to dodging and counterattacking, will ya?...That little thought gave him an idea on how he could dodge and counterattack, at the same time. But for now...he had to concentrate on what was in front of him.
Starly surrounded himself with the white glow of Quick Attack, as he sped towards Phantump. The vines snaked after the Starling Pokémon.
At the last second, just as Starly would have collided, he took a sharp turn and shot upwards, toward the ceiling! The vines weren't agile enough to follow, and were now about to grab the very Pokémon who started the Frenzy Plant.
Jake was giving orders to counteract the situation, but at this point, neither Keith nor Willa were especially concerned with that- both of them had realized by this point that something wasn't right with Phantump.
"Something isn't right with Phantump," Keith murmured.
Willa nodded in agreement. "Phantump!" she called. "Stop the attack, now!"
But Phantump didn't listen- he just continued screaming, kept the Frenzy Plant going, and judging by how chaotic and random the vines' movements were getting, wasn't keeping it under control so well. On the one hand, this meant Starly's little maneuver didn't have the desired effect. On the other hand, this meant that nobody on the battlefield was safe, a point driven home quite well as one of the vines smacked Albus into the air! Keith dashed backwards and caught the dazed, but still conscious, Kakuna in his arms.
Keith exhaled in relief as he caught Albus. "You OK, Albus?" he asked.
"Kakuuuuna," groaned Albus. He wasn't feeling too hot at the moment, but Frenzy Plant hadn't hit him too hard, not with that quadruple resistance. Right now, the Kakuna looked more concerned for his friend, concern that was quickly shared with Keith.
Willa, meanwhile, had made her way onto the battlefield, eliciting no small amount of shock and surprise from Keith. "Willa!" Keith called out.
"Gah," grunted Willa as she narrowly avoided a flailing spiky vine. "I'll be fine!" she called to Keith. "I'm going to calm Phantump down!"
"I... OK, then," Keith conceded. "Albus, can you help keep her safe?" he asked.
"Kuna," murmured Albus sadly. He would've loved to, but he didn't have the makings of another Psychic attack in him at the moment, the battle had worn him down quite a lot.
Willa was not to be deterred. She dashed and darted this way and that, jumping over vines that would've otherwise tripped her, ducking under vines that would've hit her in the head, moving slowly but surely towards the Stump Pokémon. And at last, she lunged, pulling Phantump into a tight hug. "Phantump! Phantump, stop!" Willa exclaimed. Even in her grip, Phantump flailed and screamed- it seemed he couldn't even hear Willa at the moment.
"Ka! Kakuna!" Albus was saying urgently to Keith.
"...no," Keith shook his head, looking on with admiration at Willa's efforts. "She's got this, Al."
"Ah!" Willa gasped- one of the vines grazed her shoulder, and Phantump, not knowing what he was doing, had bitten her arm, but neither of these setbacks stopped her. "Come on, Phantump, you can stop this!" Willa pleaded. "Please- the battle's over, Phantump, please stop it! PHANTUMP!!!"
That last shout appeared to have done it. The vines' frantic thrashing slowed, then stopped altogether, the vines themselves retracting into the battlefield. Phantump himself stopped thrashing about, his screams lowering themselves to confused murmuring. He blinked, and anyone who could see his eyes at that moment would see something in them change. "Oh... wh- wha..." he murmured. "Willa, did... did I...?"
Willa breathed a shaky sigh of relief, holding Phantump close to her. "It's OK," she said softly. "It's OK, Phantump."
"O-oh, n-no," Phantump whimpered, seeing the scratch from the Frenzy Plant, seeing his own bite marks on Willa's arm, looking around and seeing the utter havoc his attack had wrought upon the battlefield. "Wh-what did I do? W-Willa, I'm so sorry," he sniffed.
"No, no, don't be sorry," Willa said soothingly as Keith approached them. "Phantump... you were great, OK? We just need to train, help you get that awesome power of yours under your control."
"Willa's right, you know," Keith smiled. "There's a lot of power in that Frenzy Plant."
"Ka, Kakuna," Albus added encouragingly. Phantump said nothing in response, and merely hugged Willa tightly, quietly crying into her shoulder.
Willa stood back up, her and Keith turning to face Jake. "I hope you don't mind, but we're withdrawing from the battle," Willa said. "Phantump, if you like, we can go home-"
"N-no, I... I think I'm OK now," Phantump interrupted. True enough, he'd stopped crying. "I... I still wanna see more of this place. Uh- i-if that's OK, Jake?" he added.
"It's fine with me," Willa confirmed. Keith nodded his agreement to this as well.
Willa nodded in agreement. "Phantump!" she called. "Stop the attack, now!"
But Phantump didn't listen- he just continued screaming, kept the Frenzy Plant going, and judging by how chaotic and random the vines' movements were getting, wasn't keeping it under control so well. On the one hand, this meant Starly's little maneuver didn't have the desired effect. On the other hand, this meant that nobody on the battlefield was safe, a point driven home quite well as one of the vines smacked Albus into the air! Keith dashed backwards and caught the dazed, but still conscious, Kakuna in his arms.
Keith exhaled in relief as he caught Albus. "You OK, Albus?" he asked.
"Kakuuuuna," groaned Albus. He wasn't feeling too hot at the moment, but Frenzy Plant hadn't hit him too hard, not with that quadruple resistance. Right now, the Kakuna looked more concerned for his friend, concern that was quickly shared with Keith.
Willa, meanwhile, had made her way onto the battlefield, eliciting no small amount of shock and surprise from Keith. "Willa!" Keith called out.
"Gah," grunted Willa as she narrowly avoided a flailing spiky vine. "I'll be fine!" she called to Keith. "I'm going to calm Phantump down!"
"I... OK, then," Keith conceded. "Albus, can you help keep her safe?" he asked.
"Kuna," murmured Albus sadly. He would've loved to, but he didn't have the makings of another Psychic attack in him at the moment, the battle had worn him down quite a lot.
Willa was not to be deterred. "It's fine with me," Willa confirmed. Keith nodded his agreement to this as well.
(Mind if I don't do a "recap" and just move on?)
"Should be fine," Jake replied. "That was scary, though, to be honest. You okay, guys?"
"Starly," said Starly, ruffling his feathers. His feathers had all stood on end as Starly flew over the chaotic vines, and now he descended safely onto Jake's gloved left wrist.
That was a close one, added Lucario, who had been shielding himself with a protective dome of aura. The barrier shrunk away as the danger was gone now.
Jake looked at Buizel, who was cowering behind his legs.
"Um," said Jake, "you can come out now, Buizel...Anyway, I can take everyone to—"
Beep! Beep! Bzzrt! Jake's Pokédex buzzed.
Jake pulled out the device with his right hand and looked at the screen. "Oh, whoops, it looks like I have to bid you all farewell! I forgot that I scheduled for myself a sky tour trip. I have to head out in a few minutes in my family's helicopter, the Skarmorix. Sorry guys, I overlooked this conflict...Maybe we can meet some other time? In fact, I would like to see your base sometime. But now, I have to go." He and his Pokémon headed for the elevator, and Starly flew into Jake's pocket, recalling himself into his own Pokéball. "I'm really sorry," Jake admitted.
The Trainer turned back towards his guests for a moment. "Want to see the 'copter?" he asked. "The Skarmorix looks really cool, if I must say so myself. Or, I can walk you guys to the dock, if you're not interested."
(sure, no problem)
At Jake's question, Keith looked over at Willa and Phantump, who both nodded. "We're fine," Willa said.
"Yeah," Phantump added quietly.
However, Jake turned out to have a prior commitment he'd forgotten about, and as such, the visit had to be cut short. "It's fine, we get it," Keith assured Jake. "And sure, you'd be welcome at Sludge Wave Coast anytime."
"Agreed," Willa nodded.
At Jake's subsequent question, Keith and Willa exchanged looks, then grins, then turned back to Jake. "We'd like to see the Skarmorix," said Keith.
"Righty-o!" Jake replied, after Keith requested to see the Skarmorix. "Did I mention that the Skarmorix has an intelligent computer brain that speaks in Skarmory language? That alone is pretty cool in my opinion. Well, then, let's go!" He waved, and Buizel and Lucario scampered after him as he walked into the elevator. The guests quickly followed.
"Alright, so we'll all be going to the roof!" announced Jake as he pressed a button on the side of the elevator. The doors closed, and then the ceiling light flashed, working its magic. The doors then opened, revealing the roof of the Pokémon Diorama Museum.
To Jake's surprise, the air was calm. Usually a gust of wind greeted him when he stepped onto the roof, but then he realized that that was just the air coming off the Skarmorix's propeller blades. Unlike most days, the Skarmorix hadn't started up yet, as he wasn't getting ready for a flight just yet. Though of course Jake wasn't old enough to fly a helicopter, the Skarmorix almost always ran on autopilot, so he never had to worry about that. This helicopter's built-in autopilot was so skilled that as a joke, Jake's family had once taken it for a flying test with no one on board, and the autopilot passed! Incredible, Jake had to admit.
Jake was explaining all of this to his visitors when he spotted Buizel and Lucario in front, talking to the aircraft, which was sitting on the helipad. "See?" he pointed. "The Skarmorix speaks Skarmory!"
By the time everyone caught up with Jake's Pokémon, the Skarmorix spotted Keith, Willa, and Phantump (and Meowth?). "Skar, Skarmory!" it chimed in an unbelievably realistic Skarmory voice.
Jake grinned. "Skarmorix says, who are these new visitors? Well, my good heli friend, these are the Trainers Keith Masters and Willa Carnet, along with Keith's Meowth and Willa's Phantump. Keith and Willa are very skilled Trainers, I'm telling you!"
"Skarmory!" blipped the Skarmorix.
Since machines didn't radiate auras, Jake had to learn Skarmory language via a crash course from Lucario to be able to understand the Skarmorix. "Skarmorix says, nice to meet you guys!" translated the Aura Guardian-in-training.
Buizel and Lucario, who were leaning on either side of the Skarmorix, nodded, confirming Jake's translation.
"Also," Jake added, "you might wonder why the Skarmorix wasn't just programmed to speak human language. First, let me tell you that the Skarmorix is as intelligent as a human, despite speaking like a Skarmory. Looks—er, sounds—can be deceiving.
Anyway, originally, the Skarmorix speaking Skarmory language was just a malfunction, but now my family figured out that we can use the helicopter to help research Pokémon language patterns. Maybe one day humans and Pokémon will inherently be able to understand each other!
So, what do you think?"
Keith and Willa exchanged surprised looks at the revelation that the helicopter had a computer brain that spoke Skarmory language. Willa, Keith could tell, was understandably skeptical of such a claim, and from what she could gather from the look on Keith's face, he too figured this was something he needed to see to believe.
And yet, as they got there, the Skarmorix sounded out an incredibly convincing Skarmory cry. "Oh, wow, it really does speak Skarmory language!" Phantump smiled. "That's so cool!"
Keith chuckled as Jake translated the Skarmorix's language. Once Jake had finished, Keith was the first to speak up. "I think that's really awesome," he grinned. "And it's cool that you can understand Skarmory language, too. I'm actually fluent in Shuppet language myself- one of my Banette taught me, years and years ago." He cleared his throat and added, "Shup Shuppet shup, Shuppet Shuppet?"
"He's asking if you understood what he said," Phantump translated. Then, he realized his mistake. "...sorry," he murmured sheepishly.
Keith chuckled. "It's alright, Phantump," he smiled. "But yeah- I can speak fluent Shuppet, and by extension, fluent Banette as well. I can also understand a few other Pokémon languages, though I can't actually speak them myself. Skarmory language isn't among them, though," he chuckled.
"It's quite an interesting helicopter," Willa stated. "And I do admire what you hope to achieve with it. It would certainly be useful for Trainers to be able to understand everything their Pokémon say."
"Oh, definitely," Keith agreed. "A few friends of ours already know this firsthand," he added.
"Aw, thanks," Jake said modestly. He turned to Keith. "Yeah, I think it's cool that you can speak Shuppet and Banette language, and that you can understand the languages of some other Pokémon, too. Imagine what we could accomplish if all Trainers understood everything their Pokémon said. Language barriers wouldn't exist! Have you heard of the Trainer N, who's from Unova?"
Oh, yeah! Lucario chimed in. When I was a Riolu, I wandered off once and hitched a ride on a passing Pidgeot. I was immature then—just looking for adventure. I guess I accidentally dozed off, but I was jolted awake by Pidgeot suddenly stopping. We were face-to-face with...a very large white dragon! he recalled. And there was a Trainer on its back who introduced himself as N. He could understand what Pidgeot was saying, and explained that he could understand all Pokémon. You can guess that I was surprised.
"That's right," agreed Jake. "N's goal is to make Pokémon separate from their Trainers, who he believes abuse Pokémon and force them to battle when they don't want to. Or, uh, something like that," he said, scratching his head. "I'd better look him up more on my Pokédex later. Anyway, yes, he can understand all Pokémon."
Well, I explained to N that not all Trainers are that way, Lucario added. At the time, I was under the ownership of another Trainer who primarily trained Steel-types. He cared for all of his Pokémon and didn't force them to do anything that they didn't want to do. I didn't gain the Steel type until my evolution—N would probably expect a Trainer to force-feed me nutrients and Candies to make me evolve—but I was happy to evolve, doing it naturally, albeit slower than if Candies and Gummis were used excessively. And my Trainer was happy nonetheless.
Jake nodded. "What about you guys?" he asked Keith and Willa. "N gained his ability to understand Pokémon by being raised by them. How did you learn the Pokémon languages you know, Keith? And Willa, do you know any Pokémon languages? Sorry for bombarding you with questions," he quickly added.
"Buizel, Bui!" Buizel interrupted hastily.
Buizel says that time is getting tight, Lucario informed Jake.
"Ur, um, sorry, guys," Jake said, pulling out his Pokédex and checking the time. "I don't think we can stay and chat any longer. Time conflicts, I'm really sorry. The Temporal Pokémon could have been more lenient..." he muttered under his breath.
"Want me to walk you to the exit of the campus?" he asked his visitors.
Keith's eyes lit up at the mention of N. "Heard of N? I've met him! We had a battle and everything! Years back, I released my Unfezant because she didn't want to be tied down to a Trainer anymore, and she wanted to be free to just fly wherever she wanted, whenever she wanted. Evidently her travels took her to the Dragonspiral Tower in Unova, where she met N, had a conversation with him." As Keith spoke, he dug half of a Poké Ball out of his backpack- his half of Batrach's old Poké Ball. "Following this, N was interested enough to want to meet me personally, and so he flew over to my old place on Reshiram."
"I'm still not completely convinced this happened," Willa chimed in with a smirk.
"Ya betta believe it happened," Meowth retorted. "Took me out wit a single Dragon Breath. Good ting N let dis guy come at Reshiram wit a full team o' six. And even den, it was a draw."
The subject then went back to how Keith came to know the various Pokémon languages he could understand, while Jake was asking Willa if she knew any herself. She shook her head. "I do not," she said.
Just then, however, Jake became aware that he was running low on time. "It's just as well, those are some long stories," Keith chuckled. "And pretty unbelievable ones at that. Learning Shuppet language from a Shuppet is about the most normal story I've got in that regard," he chuckled.
"We would be glad to have you walk us to the exit," Willa stated, with Keith nodding in agreement.
"And yeah- N's actually not the only Trainer I've met who can understand all Pokémon languages," Keith added. "One of my friends, trains Electric-types, she can understand them all, too. And another friend of ours, actually lives not too far from where me and Willa live, she can understand them as well."
