UPN The Game II: The Regamening!

Maybe you had a shitty year. Maybe you had a shitty last 10 years. Who knows? But here at UPN no matter how shitty things have been there is a way to end the year and decade on a high note:

It only took a million years, but it is finally here. Play as the awesome Kuno, on the forums of UPN. Visit other forums (some of which no longer exist), see forum members (some of whom are long gone) and save UPN from doom! This time you can actually remove me from your team, and play (most of the game) without really ever using me, if you want!

I know what you must be thinking: Damn ��️, where can I play this game of champions? I got you fukkin' covered!

Ok so a few things. I promised to release the game at the end of the year because sitting on it forever working slowly just.. doesn't work. I went back for my masters not long after announcing the game, and changed jobs (sort of) a few times since then, so a lot of work after 2012 just didn't happen until the UPN Meetup at 2016. Since then I've been more serious about trying to work on it, but was still slow. This year (it's still 2019!), on Jan 1st, I promised to release whatever I had before the end of the year, even if the game wasn't done. And so by busting my ass I present to you a MOSTLY finished Regamening. I'm a lot of things but if I promise something I'll deliver.

So what's in and what's out?

You can.. more or less.. complete the game. There is an ending. A few big optional stuff (High level hunts, fishing, harder remnant areas, Cloud Garden, some ultimate weapons/armor, other secrets, etc) are not in yet. And so I promise to try to have an update at least once a month that adds some content. Your saves will all work and carry over in the new versions, nothing should be really fucked.

Please enjoy the game. I worked hard on it, and so did lots of other people.

The game is PROBABLY 20-40 hours worth of content, just blitzing through the game. My save where I haven't done hunts or that much side stuff has 27 hours, and I'm only at the end of Chapter 3 (out of 6).

No idea how much time Sneezy has.

I'm currently sitting at about 56 hours and I haven't even touched some of the side things. I don't even really have runes done beyond the first two chapters, I'm still on the first half of hunts, and haven't even touched Remnant or Arena.

Finally got a chance to play a bit. \o/ So far I've just made it to UPN HQ and talked to Talon. Miscellaneous thoughts:

As I was exploring the forest, I found a random clearing that seemed suspicious, so though I left the first time after seeing nothing was there I doubled back to investigate again. Fought an "Earth Sprite" (lol) and suddenly a star marking appeared... Checked it out and entered into a fight with two Earth Sprites and a Mountain Dew Sprite(?) which kicked my ass. OTL I didn't save after activating the star so I went back and kept trying to get it to appear again. Not sure what the exact requirements are, but I did get it to show up, saved, and left it for later. XP Ofc I didn't learn more about it until getting to UPN HQ, but now I'll be sure to keep an eye out for other strange spots...

Loved seeing Emi as a lamia lol.

Is there any consequence to throwing the cake in the poisoned pool?

Edit- Forgot to mention, there seems to be a bug with the Options menu where if you select "Return to Title Screen", the game crashes and there's an error message that says: "Unable to find file: Audio/BGS/heartbeat-01a" It can be circumvented by simply hitting "Back" instead, but just thought I'd let you know.

Near as I can tell, the only consequences are potentially busting you lungs over the result and/or feeling guilty about the fact that you just wasted a perfectly good birthday cook. I personally don't like saving after doing so, but that's a personal preference thing.

Ohey, if it isn't the very first bug I ever attempted to report again! Guess you're gonna come across some of the same audio-related issues I have, then, so I'll give you some advice:

If you ever get a skill called Mr. Clean, do not use it two turns in a row! The game will likely decide it can no longer find the corresponding sound file (yes, even though it just did), and crash as a result.

...I'm torn between Options 1 and 3. The Hunts tend to be pretty worthwhile, and I've already put in the effort to get to Rank B as it is, but... I need mah Void Stones to finish turning SC-G into a gay pride icon!

Issue:

TUGs has a move that can be pulled that'll crash the game due to a mistake in the damage formula. Use with care until I release the next version this month. >_<

I haven't talked to Talon yet, but I have Kuno/Stlbk at Level 11 and I've defeated the following bosses:

Archaic
Exeggutor
Torkoal
Carvanha
Bright Fairy

The bosses require tactics but the rewards feel lacking (double EXP of surrounding non-boss monsters, a special item). For all the effort in beating them, it feels like a marginal improvement.

Bosses I've seen but haven't beaten:

Hive Monster
Sharknado
Rock Moltres

I don't know how to consistently unlock the Rock Moltres. It seems like the easiest of these three bosses to handle, but I can't get it to reveal itself.

Here are my thoughts on the characters!

Kuno - really broken early game but gets less useful in the midgame. Early on, her ability to wall Light-based attacks, max heal, and suck out MP makes her a fantastic tank, but in the midgame where item, money and other characters are present Kuno's abilities lag.

Stlbk - jack of all trades, sucks early on. Stlbk's pathetic HP and severe water allergy makes him a huge liability, but he's the best overall character in the midgame, able to wipe fields, nuke or gut individual targets, and wear them down with attrition.

Marion Ette - I thought she was useless early on, since she has weak spells and Stalk is useless, but with a fridge full of blood she's the best boss killer in the game.

Hanatori - I guess Hana is the ninja of the group, and operates like a faster, more durable Stlbk, at the expense of heavy damage. Pretty redundant with Stlbk outside of speed, I think.

My complaints:

Mighty Bird is too hard to consistently find
Sharknado, Ow it Hurts don't seem worth the effort, since I haven't seen drops yet
Some Hunts are impossible to find

I was able to lower the Nicuaguran's MP to zero, but it could still use Spike Flail in that state. Why?

I could beat it so long as the Spiked Flail wasn't working. Why can it still use that/Vanish?

You're not supposed to beat it. Not all skills use MP.

Here's what I've found that I think are bugs:

Selling Guild Items

You can't sell back items bought as rewards for Hunts, they're pseudo-key items.
This is annoying because when you want to upgrade said items, they start to clog the inventory since they can't be disposed of.

In Chapter I, I was able to beat every Hunt that I had access to but I'm hesitant to spend the rewards, since it becomes labourious to scroll as more items accumulate.

Mighty Bird

What I've noticed with all the encounter bosses is they spawn at a certain time when a certain number of "minion monsters" are killed.

Kill beedrills → Ow it Hurts
Kill sharks → Sharknado
Kill navis → Fairy Bright
Kill swamp things (at night) → Swamp King
Kill malboros → Malboro Royal
Kill dinosaurs → Nib
Kill fireballs → Immortal Reactor

Mighty Bird doesn't follow these patterns since it only spawns after I kill fireballs, and sometimes spawns when I'm using Zubat Spray.
Killing the crows/borbs around it doesn't induce it to spawn, only random things make it appear, making it the hardest encounter to find. Shouldn't it spawn when you kill flying death?

F-Rank Swamp Hunt

I can't get this thing to spawn. I've crawled the entire swamp area enough to level up my party five times, and have never seen it.
For comparison, during this time period I fought Ghost Tree once, Royal x4 times, Swamp King x2 times, and Noctowl (the E-Rank Hunt) once.

Pretty much every hunt has hovv to spavvn it in the hunt description. Some of them are a bit more esoteric though.
