Sakura Taisen

I recently started writing my webnovel Isekai Vampire Monogatari for real, and one of the requirements for me was to play Sakura Taisen since it's set during the same time period.

The game is charming, and reminds me strongly of the golden age of VNs in the late 1990's through 2000's.

What I am surprised by though is how...unrealized the world is so far. My initial intention into playing was to get a feel for Taisho-era Japan, but here it feels like it could generically be part of any fantasy universe.

Sakura is just way too cute though and her presence is a distraction. Can't bother with the other beauties when the ultimate Japanese "tradwife" is right there ready to murder monsters.

So this feels very Muv-Luv Alternative-y.

Young civilian or troops are coddled by a military officer who sees them as tragic, doomed figures. Secret bases and missions. Supernatural enemies.

It also is the closest VN I've ever seen to being an outright anime. It's scripted like an anime, has animated cutscenes, and even previews of "episodes".

It doesn't actually feel like a period piece though. That is, at best, window dressing. The acting troupe stuff feels like it came out of Final Fantasy VI rather than a history textbook.

I'm at Episode 6. I'm a little disappointed in that the opening tells you everything you need to know about the characters.

While for the most part the characters are not "stereotypes" they are definitely informed by a few character traits, predominantly

1. What they wear
2. Where they're from

Kohran is from China, but since "Chinese" is not enough she is also a mad scientist. Maria is from Russia. Iris is a blonde, French loli who wants a working reproductive system really badly.

It's disappointing!

Oh man, Tenkai.

He's simultaneously an awful yet a great villain.

He's hateable, yes. I want to kill him. But he's also annoying as fudge because he's incredibly stupid and over-the-top. Constantly wailing, asking for stupid things, getting horny over death/destruction and his anti-west hateboner.

Hoping Satan kills this delusional fudge.
