UPN DAY: Storytime edition

Oops I got busy this year and forgot.

This year the theme is telling stories about UPN. I'll start. Wasn't there some guy in ASB that got arrested for something really fucked up? I can't remember who it was or even what they did. Does anyone remember? I think I was battling them or something too.

Ah yes, Joshua. I don't think anyone around still really knows what he did but it was apparently extremely fucked up.

My personal favorite story that obviously anyone that's been around a while knows about but newer people don't really know is the fact that UPN was attacked by Russian hackers like a decade and a half ago. Absolutely wild to think about the fact that we were ever even in their crosshairs for some reason.

My story is that I remember in high school I was on a trip to Europe and still managed to find WiFi in some hotel bathroom and I decided to log into UPN and post in the ASB Time Out. Idk why that’s what I thought of but that’s how much of a dedicated poster I was back in the day haha

To be honest, the only reason I found that this website existed when I joined was because of FizzyBubbles. I don't think I would have found this site any other way so I am glad I joined FB.

The only UPN-related story I can recall is secondhand UPNCon legends of Jeri removing his own admin permissions while testing something.

It was while trying to give me and Snorby ASB sig privileges. The look on his face as he walked over to Kuno in shame was absolutely priceless, especially since the entire rest of the group was there playing some board game or something.

Here's my story.

On Chaka's UPN, there was a Forum 15 which was dedicated to discussing adult stuff, mostly hentai.

Someone, whose name I believe started with an L, possible Linux Penguin, posted a high-resolution hentai of a brown haired girl banging a shota. He claimed he found it on his "Kazaa".

Archaic was there as well, and much discussion around the campfire was to the origin of this image. Some claimed that it was incest (both humans had brown hair) or that it came from a "video game" (a pc98 eroge). Images from this series, often in animated .gif form, were all over hentai websites in the 56k age.

When Chaka's UPN went down, that image was lost. However, being a horny 13 year old, I had saved some hentai from that era onto floppy disk. They were .gifs and not very large compared to the original, but I had a copy of images saved somewhere.

Over the years that I have told this story, I have recreated the drawings a few times, described them to othes, but no one was able to get what I was talking about.

After my dad passed away in December I resolved to finally clear out the 30 years of floppy disks I have, and one such floppy, belonging to Dark Chromium Dragonite, had the hentai.zip on it.

Unfortunately, the disk was corrupted. I was able to get some stuff off but not "hamlet.gif" which depicted the legendary Forum 15 pic.

Undeterred, I learned of BadCopyPro, a software that can recover incomplete images from damaged floppy disks. One had to recover each image 15 byte chunk by 15 byte chunk, and this thing was 12 kb. How many clicks was that? 800 clicks.

Using what part of the image is legible, I consulted Google Lens, to no avail. So I asked Yotsuba's /h/ and they ID'd it right away:

This image is a series of prints done by the artist Juan Gotoh in the late 1990's, and it's not incest or really shota.
