The Djinn's Archives
Lost Library of Goldenridge's Heartland

The war-torn city known as Goldenridge has an intriguing past. Millenia ago, a wise and benevolent pokemon resided over the lands, generous to all, and to the peoples their name was Hyun-pa. As time went on, greed and corruption among the nobles of the land tainted the heart of Hyun-pa, and in a fit of great rage he razed the lands around him, casting out those who harboured no ill will towards him. While he was immensely powerful, he knew that the actions of a few would not condemn the many, and was willing to forgive humanity, but as his anger left him and he saw the devastation he left upon the world, he wept. In an act of repentance, the wise pokemon would seal himself from the world, into their own personal prison to repent for their actions, and the name Hyun-pa faded from the annals of history.

Following the victory of the Marshals over the Rocket splinter group known as the Shells, through reluctant military intervention, the authorities readied themselves to turn their attention to the other faction, the Ribs, when the leader of said group contacted the lead Marshal personally, requesting his presence within the centre of the building to negotiate terms of surrender without bloodshed. Accepting the invitation, Lieutenant Vicefeder met with the enigmatic leader Piper, who revealed several great secrets of the city, and showed the man an interesting discovery deep within the depths: a mysterious doorway.
Now exposed as Gabriella Kalsdottir, last of the Council, she formally disbanded the Ribs and requested to serve her likely life sentence through what lay beyond the doorway. With some work, the entire structure was excavated and transported outside the gates of the city, and after thousands of years humans once more met with the wise Hyun-pa, who in their time had used their immense powers to construct a vast library containing knowledge beyond knowledge. Known as the Djinn's Archives, the pokemon resides within their self-contained prison, with Gabriella in service to them, the mythical pokemon Hoopa opening invitations to all to peruse the tomes within, to build on their incalculable collection and to see for himself how humanity has changed.

The Djinn's Archives serve as a training zone for ZUs, and is designed to provide both adventurers and updators the freedom to create their own stories, with open ended opportunity for roleplaying. The magicks of the archives prevent the use of empty pokeballs for capture within the building itself, but those curious for an experience may tap into the magic of the library. Hyun-pa, being a mythical pokemon of great dimensional manipulation, has forged several receptacles around the floors of the Archives, through which trainers may place a book upon. The power of the receptacles will open a doorway to a pocket dimension related to that book, so that trainers may literally engage in the stories, and due to being outwith the confines of the archives, capture opportunities are open within these dimensions.

Reception and Recreation (reply in linen)

The crux of any adventurer's journey through the archives, the main reception chamber is a vast hall with a number of seats for casual visitors to browse the library's contents, and more often than not is where Gabriella, the Prime Archivist, and Hyun-pa, Director of Their Namesake, can be found. Always interested in hearing stories, the reception area is floored with unbreakable glass through which one can gaze upon an endless sea of pages, swirling from nowhere and upwards into the archives to become books, and trainers who wish for a relaxed time can ask the patrons if there's any work to be done. After all, the archives are far from complete, and any small token of assistance is appreciated.

Department of World History (reply in burlywood)

Much can be said of the world we live in, both the good and the bad, and it was this aspect of the world's history that the Djinn looked for first. Within this well-kept and vintage department, with mahogany carvings and the scent of pine, lies books pertaining to the lives and happenings of the world's people and nations, with autobiographies and eyewitness accounts of famous events lining the shelves. The patron of this department, Ria, is a prim and proper Sigilyph who is not one for silliness, yet the Chrono Archivist is certainly keen to allow people to peruse the books. For trainers who want to experience history as it happened, there can be no greater haven.

Department of Literature and Fiction (reply in peru)

It is not just the true stories that piqued Hyun-pa's interest, but the stories created by authors as well. Sequestered above World History, Literature and Fiction expresses the creative minds of countless individuals, with famous and obscure titles everywhere, fairy tales standing in the same room as great sagas and simple drabbles and poems nestled with exotic novellas and works too risque for younger readers. Much to form, the Whimsical Archivist, Nimmi the Aromatisse wanders carefree, pointing visitors in random directions to whatever she feels fits them. Trainers who want a fanciful, unpredictable journey would be at home on this floor of the archives.

Department of Arts and Crafts (reply in lawngreen)

Not all books accumulated by the Director are word-laden tomes. Many of them are filled with the visual imaginations of people and pokemon alike, and these are located in the domain of Elole, a Cinccino bearing the title of Creative Archivist. Contrasting to the prior floors, Arts and Crafts is a kaleidoscopic afrenzy upon the senses, colours and shapes situated everywhere, and the works within feature all sorts of artwork, from painting and drawings to sculptures and installations modern and classic and even music, all unique in its own way. Trainers with a taste for a bombastic display of an adventure can choose to spend some time here.

Department of Technical and Scientific Studies (reply in steelblue)

By all standards, discoveries of technology and the nature of science itself in the past few centuries would fill a library in their own right, and it is no surprise then that Hyun-pa took vested interest in what humans had created. This department, as expected, is more an extensive laboratory than a repository for knowledge, with sturdy and practical benches and tables with little cushioning surrounded by whitewashed bookshelves littered with tomes ranging from chemistry and physics to mechanical works and records of inventions over the years, and Ibra, Beheyeem patron and Engineered Archivist will treat all visitors as carefully as they treat their ward. Trainers who would like a technically based story would be welcome to utilise the books located here, though some have been advised as rumours tell that some of the tomes here are of future creations.

Department of Tongues and Philosophies (reply in tomato)

Located at the back of the archives, the concept of languages has been strongly discussed even from the mythical Tower of Babel, and often lands hand in hand with the realm of philosophy. Within this dark corner of the Djinn's home, indescribable volumes tower over the desks, each book inlaid with gold and worth a fortune in their own right, yet as one wanders the halls the whisperings of a thousand languages will draw them, while deep thought processes and ideologies will detract one from their own train, and the Silent Archivist, Tarius the Bisharp will naturally be able to read the hearts of trainers over the course of centuries of experience. Trainers with a desire to face their inner selves will invariably find themselves drawn, and may find out something they didn't realize lay deep down.

Due to the nature of the zone as a training area for ZUs, the ZA for the Djinn's Archives will be under the guidance of all current and future ZA's, and any queries by ZUs or trainers can be levied to any of the following: Lil'twick, Prof. Enigma, and Sneaze.

Note that while new updaters are encouraged to start here so that they have more ZAs that are knowledgeable about the zone that can assist them, any trainer may start updating in any zone at any point.

Trainers who want a fanciful, unpredictable journey would be at home on this floor of the archives.
The story of Goldenridge City was known, and known quite well among the people of Fizzytopia, and those living in the small coastal town of Sludge Wave Coast were no exception, considering one of its residents had a hand in helping with some of the madness it had undergone in recent years, earning it the nickname of Bedlam Ridge. But not quite so well-known by comparison was the story of the city's ancient past, of the Pokémon who had grown immensely angry upon seeing the greed and corruption all around it, and who had driven all away before realizing what it had done. And now, that Pokémon, known in this day and age as the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa, had created a colossal library, containing books of all sorts, immense knowledge to be perused, and today, it was open for all to visit.

The Trainer who had arrived looked around as she entered, smiling faintly at the expansive array of shelves and books, and despite her small stature and relatively young age, the sheer size and mysterious air of the place did nothing to deter her by any means. "This should be very interesting," she remarked. One might assume said remark was to nobody in particular, but a second glance would reveal a small insect flying overhead.

"Indeed," the Cutiefly buzzed thoughtfully. "The aura I'm picking up on... I've never detected anything like it in my life. This place really must be run by the Mythical Pokémon, then."

"It would not surprise me," nodded Terri Alph. "I know the story well... Hoopa was angered by the worst of humanity, and lost faith in them. Just... just like the Unown, back at Alph," she sighed.

"But Hoopa realized not all humans were bad, yes?" inquired the Cutiefly.

Terri's smile returned. "It seems so, Find," she replied.

Find studied her Trainer's aura intently. "This is a sore subject to you," she observed. "Whenever the relationship between Pokémon and people as a whole becomes strained. May I ask exactly...?"

Terri said nothing even as her Cutiefly trailed off. The only response the Bee Fly Pokémon got was Terri's trademark mysterious smile. "Let's find somewhere to go," she said, leading the way towards the Department of Literature and Fiction. Fanciful and unpredictable... an accurate descriptor, not only of the adventures one could experience by placing one of the books in that department on the receptacle and traveling through the resultant Hoopa hoop, but also, one could argue, of Terri Alph herself. And Find the Cutiefly, despite her desire to know more about her Trainer, nevertheless followed the mysterious miss Terri. That was always Terri's response when that particular subject was approached with her- a mysterious smile and a casual change of subject. Even her aura was proving difficult to read at that moment, even to the Cutiefly, whose species were quite well-versed in the reading of aura. And now, the mysterious young Trainer was seeking out an unpredictable journey for herself and her Pokémon. Whatever would happen next, nobody could say, but the Bug/Fairy-type was certain of one thing- that it was going to be very, very interesting.

I'd like to update for 1 person, please! It's been a while since I was trying to finish up adventures-in-progress in CG, so I welcome the training as a way to shake off the rust.

Hey! I'm interested in testing the waters with one adventure. It's a little daunting for me but I'm sure that I can manage.

Missingno. Master-

Conversing with your Cutiefly, the two of you discuss the origins of the library and ponder what stories it will take you through. Fiction... home to unknown fantasies and things that only exists in the recesses of the human mind. Everyone had a story to tell, even if it was using the most basic and simple of tools available. Create a hero, a villain, and then a world for them to interact. But what set it all apart was that there was an underlying feeling of "this will never exist."

And as you dive into a book, you brace yourself for whatever could happen next. Houses made of candy, giant beanstalks, or even a fanciful castle. Fairytales were all about enchanting the minds of the young, imparting ideals beneath a saccharine backdrop. Though, modern fairytales are nothing like the ones of old... Gruesome and dark. Grim, even.

As you enter the world of the story, you seem to have chosen one such tale. The sound of a girl's voice fills your ears, though from where you aren't certain. Looking around, you see beautiful plains and sprawling forests. The sky was clear, with nary a cloud in sight. A picturesque day, perfect in every way.

Yet, you could not find the maiden, even if her song-filled you. Looking around, you notice a spire on the far horizon. A girl in a tower, a little bit of a cliche, but what would you expect. These stories were what made these cliches a reality. And nary not but the song and that one tiny interesting detail, it seemed that was the start of this tale. What unfolds next, well, you'll have to see.

What do you do?

What do you do?
Fiction was truly fascinating, wasn't it? Limited only by the positively boundless possibilities of the human mind's ingenuity, and of course by the minor detail that whatever was created could never become reality... right? Most would certainly think so. But Terri wasn't what you'd consider "most". She knew of more possibilities than many would think to be, well, possible. Of strange powers, of beings capable of amazing feats that defy rational scientific explanation. Such was to be expected, after all, considering where she grew up. Therefore, the notion of living out a fictitious adventure for herself didn't seem quite as remote a possibility as it might for most others. Though that wasn't to say that it didn't appeal to her all the same- on the contrary, she was quite looking forward to finding out what she was in for, and it was with a small yet genuine smile on her face that Terri quite literally got into the book she'd chosen.

The first thing Terri noticed was the singing. A girl's voice reached her ears, singing beautifully and constantly, and though Terri looked around, looked at the beautiful plains and forests stretched out before her on all sides, she could not find the source. Though that wasn't as frustrating a development as one might initially think, considering that from where she was standing, Terri had an absolutely gorgeous view.

"Beautiful," murmured Find, likewise looking around and admiring their new surroundings.

"Do you mean the scenery, the singing, or both?" Terri asked, continuing to admire all that which she'd just asked Find about.

"Both, definitely," replied the Cutiefly.

Terri smiled. "I agree," she stated. "This is a lovely start. I can't wait to see where it goes from here. I think our first move should be to find out where that singing is coming from, that seems to be our only real clue to act on so far." And she started scanning her surroundings more carefully, looking for anything that might stand out.

"Hmm," buzzed Find, looking around along with her Trainer, and for a few seconds, they really didn't notice anything unusual.

"...aha, I think that's it," Terri said at last, pointing off in the distance- to a tower in the distance, right on the horizon. Whether the sound was actually coming from there, right now, Terri couldn't say for sure, but right now, that and the song were all they had to work with, and she couldn't imagine the story starting out too complicated. "Whoever's singing like that might be in that tower," Terri stated.

"...a girl in a tower?" murmured Find. "A bit cliche, isn't it?"

Terri tilted her head. "Well, of course," she said. "But stories like these, fairy tales and the like, these are where those kinds of cliches come from to begin with. Now, let's go," she added, starting to walk off towards the tower. "Let's head to that tower and see what happens next." And Find, with no real objections to make to this course of action, flew after her Trainer.

"I'm telling you, if she wasn't at the actual Arcade that popped up than this is the next place she would've gone." Big says to his Charmeleon as they enter the technological area of the archives. "It's just like how Asg- Frederic," he corrects himself, "doesn't recognize any of us because we found him after the Realm of Shadows." "If you say so..." Hotstuff replies with very obvious doubt in his voice. "There's an awful lot of places a pokemon like her would hang out, and that's assuming she's even nearby." Big looks incredulously at Hotstuff. "What, but I happened to come across practically every other member of the team in both universes by chance? Since when were you such a pessimist, especially after all we've seen?" Hotstuff just sighs. "I dunno, it just feels like forever since I got into a good fight. And to be honest I miss my wings. It's weird to have the muscle memories of being able to fly but not being able to anymore." Big frowns a little and nods in sympathy. "Yeah I get it. It's gotta be really hard to get used to. But hey, maybe that's something we can resolve here even if we're in the wrong place. Plus this place is about dimensions right? Maybe there's other answers. Let's go take a look around." He does his best to lighten the mood and with a bright nod to each other the pair start to look around the Lab and library combo.

What archive of our lands and people would be complete without the tragic, complicated and often disturbing tale of the one known as Minerva?

Born as Coselle Ette to parents who clearly had a rather twisted sense of naming conventions, also evidenced by her much younger half-sister, Marion Ette.

The story of Coselle's untimely death as a young adult – on October 21st, 1991 - is one for another time. For, you see, death in the story of Minerva is not the dramatic end of the sentence - just a single comma in a long, long run-on, seemingly without end.

With vengeance in her heart towards those who had wronged her, and a small child to protect, Coselle's spirit took the form of a Shuppet, who helped raise Marion and assist her in learning about the strange world of ghost-type Pokemon, all without revealing her true identity. Instead, she chose for herself the name of the Roman Goddess of wisdom, warfare, justice and arts... Minerva.

As Marion grew to young adulthood herself and Minerva willingly chose life as her beloved sister's starter Pokemon, the increasingly powerful Banette garnered quite the reputation as a morally ambiguous trickster, with quick wit and quicker temper. Often recounting tales of vicious torture and murder in a tone and demeanor that made it difficult to differentiate dark humor from bloody reality, complete with a strange, almost inhuman manner of employing human speech, it was never clear exactly how many deaths she was responsible for in her life-after-life. It all seemed one, big joke to her, regardless of whether not there was a kernel of truth to the things she said.

Over time, as other trainers got to know Marion and Minerva, that kernel would become more apparent. It is well-known, of course, that the most powerful tool in a Banette's arsenal is their ability to curse others. Minerva herself carried a needle, tip stained rust-brown with her own blood, indicating that it had been used in the past, and the wicked stain upon the needle from previous curses was never destined to wash away.

Recounting the days leading up to that fateful evening of October 31st, 2012, Marion would eagerly say that she thought of them as some of the happiest in her life. Meeting new friends, both trainers and Pokemon alike – getting involved in their stories, their struggles, their antics – watching romance bloom and enemies reconcile – it was a time of excitement and joy.

For Minerva, it was much more complicated. Within her troubled heart, feelings such as joy, excitement – and even love – were two sides of a frightful coin. Joy could always flip to sorrow. Excitement, to dread. And love...

Love was a coin that was flipping up in the air in those days, destined to land on one side or the other. For among the many friends that Marion and Minerva had made was one young man named Keith Golbatson Masters, and Minerva... well.

Much and more could be said about the circumstances that led up to that awful, damnable Halloween Incident, but in truth, the actions of Neville the Stunfisk, or Minerva's hatred of him, or Keith's attempt to abandon the offending creature, only to consider adopting him back again, much to Minerva's inconceivable ire at feeling betrayed – all of this was just window dressing. Red herrings. Excuses.

If you dig down to the center of it all – the reason, the real reason Minerva attempted to lay a horrible curse on Keith that Halloween night – was that the coin was still spinning in her heart, rapidly, and in her blind rage she could not tell the difference between love and hatred.

But at the last second, something went wrong. In attempting to restrain Minerva, it was Marion's arm that was struck with the needle. Thus began the terrible curse that would haunt them for years and years to follow.

As Marion recovered in the hospital, it became clear that Minerva had found some semblance of regained humanity, having accidentally stolen a piece of it from her sister. The truth of her secret heart, now all but impossible to conceal, was confessed against the backdrop of a garden of roses, and Minerva and Keith became lovers. In retrospect, it is quite easy to see how a human form directly resulting from a botched curse could lead to nothing but trouble... but when one is in love, all one sees is the moment.

Mind erasures. Human sacrifices. Increasingly implausible attempts at regaining more of her lost humanity. Arrests. Escapes.

From human, to Banette, and back again. Crossing the rainbow bridge, back and forth, so many times that Minerva – or Coselle, as she was often called in her various attempts at a human form – aught to have considered a commuter pass.

The coin spun like a tornado in her heart, perpetually, for the one called Keith.
Love. Hatred. Love. Hatred. Love hatred love hatred lovehatred lovehatred lovehatredlovehatred

“Stop!”

Oroitz looks up in shock.

“I... I'm sorry. I know you asked me to read a bit for you, but I can only imagine how painful it-”

“Oroitz-” Minerva's eyes flash with intensity, before she takes a deep breath. “My friend. You don't need to apologize. Just...”

“Hm?” The Honchkrow tilts his head slightly, eager to make amends despite Minerva's assurance that he had done nothing wrong.

“Just... put the book back where you found it, okay? I would rather not hear any more.”

“As you wish.”

Back to the History section Oroitz flies, as Minerva finds herself inexplicably compelled to venture deeper into the library's archives.

Appearing fully human, yet bearing the name she chose as a Banette, the infamous protagonist knew that, if she could not even bear to hear the story of her life read back to her by a trusted friend, then she was likely not ready for what these tomes had in store for her...

And yet, in Minerva's mind, there was no turning back. After all, she knew the story continued from where Oroitz left off. Minerva was eventually presumed dead – and for good, this time. Keith had moved on – fallen in love, married another woman – had a daughter about a year ago that was somehow ten years old...? Something something Primal Dialga. No matter.

Ultimately, the wife... the daughter...

Missingno. Master- You and your Cutiefly quickly converse over the beauty of the scenery, before deciding to head towards the tower. This takes you across the sprawling plains into a field of flowers. All sorts of Pokemon could be found here, from Combee to Cutieflies and Ribombee, to Comfey, and even a Florges tending to the flowers. They all give you a wave, the world seeming idyllic and all of them minding their own business.

Though, you soon leave them behind and enter the woods. The path was dark, covered by the sea of leaves above you. Little flecks of light managed to pierce the plant ocean, but only enough to illuminate the path before you. The rustling of leaves in the wind was calming, and various forest Pokemon peered at you and Find before heading off on their own business.

The strange thing, though, was the lack of people. Everything here felt more like a backdrop than an important character in the story. This would continue, not seeing any people at all. All you had was the girl's song, which carried you through the forest. It was every present, and from the sounds of it, it sounded like a cleaning tune.

It became louder and louder as you made your way down the path before you reached the tower proper. It was centered in a clearing, surrounded by various flowers and a garden of vegetables. Though, the weird thing was you couldn't find an entrance into the tower, just a large window towards the top. The girl's song was loud and clear here, singing about her wishes to be free from her tower and to see the world.

And then, like a waterfall, long locks of golden blonde hair flew down the tower. It soon coiled down, and you could see the girl looking down at you with curiosity.

"I go to throw the dust into the wind and instead... A girl and her buggy friend appeared. Hello!" she exclaims towards you, her voice distant from the top of the stone spire.

How do you respond?

With their destination decided upon, Terri and Find headed off. The comparatively plain plains soon gave way to a field of flowers, abuzz with Pokémon. There were Combee, there were Cutiefly and their evolved form Ribombee (Find eyed these up in particular, taking note of that which she would someday become herself), there were Comfey, and there was a Florges tending the flowers. Many were Pokémon Terri was familiar with, owning some herself, and she smiled and waved back in response to their friendly waves.

Past the flowers lay the forest. A dark pathway, the leaves above blocking out most of the sun. It wasn't complete cover, though, and so some flecks of light managed to peek through, just enough to illuminate the path ahead. Terri smiled- the lack of people she'd seen thus far was not bothering her, and in fact the rustling of leaves in the wind seemed to calm her. She smiled, nodded, and waved at the various forest Pokémon as she saw them peering at her.

"No people thus far," observed Find as they proceeded through the forest. "It's strange. This is, after all, a story written by humans, yes? One would think they would be the focal point."

"Oh, I'm sure there are humans to be found," Terri said easily. "I feel like if we can find the source of the singing, things will really begin."

Find had no real objections to this logic, and so they continued onwards, talking no more, but rather enjoying their surroundings as they went. Even if it hadn't really began just yet, a story was meant to be enjoyed, was it not?

Said song had been getting steadily louder as they proceeded through the forest, and at last, they reached a clearing, containing the very tower Terri had found. Surrounding the tower were a variety of flowers and even a vegetable garden. What Terri couldn't see, however, was a door. "Strange," she murmured, tilting her head as this structural screwup occurred to her. But for the moment, her attention was directed elsewhere- the window at the top of the tower, for it was from there that the song could be heard loud and clear. Moreover, Terri could now make out the words to the song, a song conveying a wish to be free from the tower, to see the world, a song that rendered Terri momentarily speechless as it resonated with her more than many might know. And so she stood there, looking up at the window, just listening to the song. Find knew better than to break the silence, she knew her Trainer quite well by this point.

After a while, there came quite the sight- golden blonde hair, grown ridiculously long, was lowered out the tower window. Soon after, the girl, almost certainly the source of both the song and the hair, glanced down with a look of curiosity before greeting Terri and her "buggy friend". "Hello!" Terri called back up. "My name is Terri, and this is Find. We heard your singing. It's a beautiful song, she smiled. "We followed the sound and it led us here. Why are you in this tower?" she asked, head tilted slightly.

The world would eventually end. Argyle knows this. It probably won't happen in his lifetime. That's a relief.

It's not the first time the world would end. Wasn't history and pre-history (for history only includes those events recorded in writing, but the world and humanity pre-date the advent of such technology) filled with ends and starts? Though perhaps using the phrase "end of the world" screams bravado. After all, earth still stands in one way or another. What really ends is society as we - or rather the humans of the time - know it. Then, the survivors begin anew. Anyway, I digress. Point is, civilizations who at one point thought themselves indomitable were soon left to be overtaken by the sands of time.

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Those lines from a poem from a distant land captures this essence better than anything Argyle would conjure up. Argyle will never be so arrogant as to think himself beyond the reaches of Father Time. Instead, he gives Time the respect it commands.

Anyway, back to the end of the world. Or should I say the past ends of the world? In which case, it begs the question: which one? Argyle isn't sure really. But that's why he's here in the history section of the Djinn's Archives. He can take his pick of ends (or starts or even middles) to choose and study.

Though maybe we should take another detour and examine why Argyle would be interested in such affairs that occurred ages ago?

See, Argyle enjoys reading history because it grants him insight into how societies beforehand functioned. Having a historic context for how societies developed, how events unfolded can help him shape his thoughts on... well a lot of things.

It can help him ponder on the most esoteric of questions like "are there certain values that are shared across humanity?" (though let's not kid ourselves, that question seems unanswerable as an exhaustive study would be infeasible) or "what happens when a society is constructed such that ____?" (this one seems slightly easier to tackle?). Not that Argyle thinks he can ever come up with an ideal society, but it's still something he can think on to past the time.

Though, his interest with the cycles of history are not entirely esoteric or philosophical in nature. History can help him map society's standing today in the grand scheme of things and what might lay ahead of them. Does he have the power to change that course? No. But, at least understanding where society might be headed is something he'd like.

Then of course, there are the most basic reasons as to why he'd want to read up on history: curiosity and awe. Reading how societies seemingly more primitive than his own (after all, don't all societies view themselves at the forefront of modernity?) can tackle the same issues and develop technologies that are still used today (just look at how minor mechanical updates the methodology for olive oil required) inspires Argyle plain and simple. The understanding of knowledge of those societies satisfy his curiosity (although the unanswerable questions he ponders on do tend to aggravate him).

Anyway, let's get back on track before the detour becomes longer than it already has (perhaps unnecessarily so)... Let's focus on the task at hand: picking a point in history to study.

Wisewoods the Decidueye meticulously and solemnly examines the spines of books alongside Argyle.

"Fizzytopia's been around for a while. Rememberance Park has monuments dedicated to the past," Argyle says. The duo share a shiver recalling the horrifying adventure they had in the park. They had practically lived the aftershocks of the tsunami that had hit the region in the recent past. That was one event they were well acquainted with. Though, Argyle's interest here is not in modern history but in ancient history.

Wisewoods nods. Understanding the societies that once claimed these lands as home, and now who have been claimed by these lands... the Grass/Ghost type trails.

"Precisely. What governments did they have?.." Argyle begins.

What set of laws did they have? Wisewoods continues.

"Did they engage in commerce with others?" Argyle adds.

Any conflicts? Wisewoods asks.

"What spurred their rise?"

What brought their downfall?

The two stand in silence for a moment to consider this back and forth. All worthy questions to look for answers.

"There should be an Archivist around here who can give us pointers on what to look for," Argyle finally suggests.

A Sigilyph, Decidueye agrees, I think I saw one around the corner.

"Then let's go and see what history has in store for us," Argyle ends as the two make their way to the Chrono Archivist.

The boy wandered through the halls of the archives, absorbing all of the knowledge before him. Each step, a rhythmic beat, creating his own little tune as he walked through. His scarf trailed behind him, seeming as a lead to follow. Trailing behind was a small Maractus, shaking its hands and hopping along to its own little beat.

This place was a treasure trove of knowledge for him, telling stories of untold lore and legends to his young mind. While he was passionate about going out and exploring regional tales... there was something different about that there. To the tween, this place held everything he could want or need to know to create songs about. Sing praises of heroes past, or look into ancient grimoires about his craft.

His inspiration only grew as he meandered through the halls, looking at the different books of different sections. Yet, fantasy nor reality seemed to incite interest today. No, he was here for another reason. The thrill of chasing down the story wasn't here... Even if he could traverse the book. Bards learned through word of mouth, the tongues of others fueling their craft. Books were meant to research the craft, not the content.

And that is how he found his way to the arts and crafts section. Books filled with paintings from famous artists, albums of photos from world-traveled photographers, and scores from the greatest musicians of all times. For such a young, knowledge-thirsty lad... this is where he needed to be.

"Ooooooooooooooooooh Staccato!" he exclaimed in a hushed whisper. His voice was filled with whimsy and cheer but muted to not disturb those reading.

The small Maractus hopped next to him, looking at him with wide eyes filled with curiosity. The young trainer picked up the Maractus and swung him around, causing happy giggling from the plant baby. The bard then set his starter down, letting out a small heave.

"You are... still heavier than I think you are..." he lets out an exasperated sigh. He was only four and a half feet tall, and not strong in any compacity.

"Anywayssssss... Let's see here... Drums... Drums... Drums..." the trainer started to mutter to himself. Staccato looked at him a little confused, the tone-deaf cactus not picking up on the beat that his trainer was speaking to.

The boy lightly tapped the drum he always carried with him as he spoke. Set his mind to the beat, and find the book that best resonated. He soon found one that had a different feeling to it and looked at Staccato.

"Okay, let's get this show on the road," he said with a wide, toothy grin. His eyes were wide, with a fervorous gaze. Grabbing Staccato's hand, the boy with dyed green hair and bloodstained boots dove in, ready for a whole musical adventure.

Missingno. Master-

The girl looks at you with a nervous smile, seeming to realize that she shouldn't be talking with you. It was all over her face that she was breaking one of the rules imposed on her. A little mischievous smirk came across her face, and she began to formulate her response.

"Hello Terri!" she exclaimed "And... Find. That name is certainly unique," she commented on, a little confused but not really judgemental. More in a naive, sheltered way. "My name is Rapunzel!"

Taking a deep breath, she continues. "Thank you for the compliment, I guess? Just the same ol' thing for me. As for why I'm here, well, my mother wants to keep me safe. She's told me that men are dangerous creatures and that they'll prey on me. So I'm just here, locked away for the rest of my days, to keep me safe," she lets out an audible sigh.

Before you could respond, you're interrupted by a rustling in the trees. A Pidove flies through, with what seems to be a letter tied to its foot. Even in these days, they were good messenger birds, and Rapunzel's face lit up upon seeing it.

"Oh my sweet friend," the girl coos as the Pidove lands next to her. She unwraps the note and reads it.

"Hmm, Terri, bad news. My mother's going to be back from the markets soon. Hey, why don't you come up here? I'm sure she'll be fine with a girl like me visiting," she giggled. She then trails off a bit, becoming inaudible due to the height of the tower.

You watch as the Pidove flies off with another note in hand, and Repunzal gazing back out over at you.

"What do you say? You can use my hair to climb up!" she exclaims.

What do you do?

Terri watched as the girl looked down at her. Her face conveyed her nervousness clear as day, this sort of interaction was in violation of whatever rules were imposed upon her. It tore at Terri's heart- she was so able to recognize this nervousness because she'd felt it herself in her past. However, said nervous smile soon gave way to a mischievous smirk, one that told Terri that this girl was about to show even further disregard for said rules. Shortly afterwards, after greeting Terri and Find, and commenting on the unique nature of the latter's name (neither Terri nor Find took any offense- the sort of nicknames Terri tended to give to her Pokémon were often seen as unique and unusual by those far less sheltered than this girl), she introduced herself as Rapunzel.

Rapunzel thanked Terri for the compliment, then explained that this was pretty much more of the same for her. Her mother, as it turned out, wanted to keep her safe, and told her how dangerous men were, so she was locked away in this tower in the name of her safety. Terri did not respond immediately, nor did her expression give much of anything away, but the aura Find was picking up off of Terri in this moment was a whole other swarm of Yanma. Great and terrible anger, the likes of which typically only comes from when something hits just a little too close to home... and sympathy, pity.

As it happened, however, Terri wasn't to be given time to respond immediately anyway- a Pidove flied onto the scene, with what appeared to be a letter tied to its foot. Rapunzel recognized the Pidove, greeting it warmly, and taking and reading the letter. She conveyed the news to Terri- apparently her mother was to be home from the markets soon. She then, however, invited Terri to come up there with her, stating that her mother would surely be fine with a girl visiting, considering her beef seemed to be with men specifically.

Terri wasn't so sure about that last bit. She felt as though the idea was more to keep Rapunzel isolated from the outside world as a whole, and that the threat of men preying on her was just a plausible excuse to be able to do so. Then again, as she looked back up at Rapunzel, she was reminded of herself, of her own situation back in Alph. She decided on the spot that if Rapunzel's mother was going to have an issue with her presence, then she would cross that bridge when she came to it. "Sure," Terri smiled. The notion of using one's hair as a rope ladder was a strange one, but Terri could tell tales of much, much stranger, and so she walked up to where Rapunzel's hair hung down. "I'm about to start climbing, OK?" she called- she at least wanted to make sure Rapunzel was prepared before she started climbing, she didn't want to hurt her. She somehow doubted that would be an issue, but even still. But yes- upon getting the OK from Rapunzel, Terri would climb up the hair to the tower window above.

Missingno. Master-

You could relate to this girl and felt her pain. The amount of empathy here was tangible to your Cutiefly, who could sense this story was all too familiar. Locked away against your will, never to see the outside world on your own. Break the rules, break free, and break your past. You saw your past in this girl, whose hair was as long as the tower. To be sheltered all of your life... It was a cruel fate indeed.

As you climbed her hair, it was soft and smooth. Though there was a certain taut strength too it. It felt like silken rope, strengthened to the point where climbing it was surprisingly easy. It also put into perspective how tall the tower really was. It felt like a good solid ten minutes as you ascended her hair, the girl just gazing out the window the entire time. Though, once you got into arm's reach, she extended her hand and pulled you up into the tower.

And there you are greeted by a nice, tidy space. There was a small bedroom made into the top of the tower, a bed with ombre sheets and a tapestry to cover it. There were drawings all over the walls, seemingly showing an artistic side of the girl. Besides that, you saw a small kitchen, a little seating of two seats next to a fireplace, with a bookshelf. You also saw a door built into a staircase that led up to her room, as well as stairs that descended further into the tower, presumably to her mother's quarters.

"Welcome to my little world Terri!" she exclaimed, bouncing over to one of the seats and sitting down. You could see a bucket and mop resting next to the empty fireplace.

"Just taking a small break before mother gets back. Say, why don't you help me finish tidying up? I know you're a guest and all, but I'm sure mother would be more... cordial if you show you've helped out. What do you say?" Rapunzel asks you, pointing to a small pile of boxes on the far side of the room.

How do you respond?

How do you respond?
With Rapunzel ready, Terri began to climb her hair. Soft and smooth, but taut at the same time. Terri got the feeling it wasn't about to snap on her (not that she was heavy, but even still, this was hair they were taking about here). Her concern was more as to whether this was comfortable for Rapunzel at all, especially as this was looking to be a... well, to be a lengthy climb. Indeed, once she was nearing the top, it had felt to her as though the climb took ten solid minutes. But if Terri had any objections to this, she hid them well.

Finally, once Terri was within arm's reach, Rapunzel reached out, took hold of Terri's hand, and pulled her into the tower. Terri and Find looked around at their surroundings- a nice, tidy space. The top of the tower was made into a bedroom, the walls of which were covered in drawings- clearly, Rapunzel had some artistic aptitude. There was a small kitchen, a few seats beside a fireplace, and a bookshelf. And a door, there was a door built into a staircase that both led up to Rapunzel's room, and also downstairs, presumably to where Rapunzel's mother lived.

Terri smiled as Rapunzel welcomed her. "It's a nice place," she replied, glancing around. Really was nice, she hadn't been lying, looked quite cozy... but cozy was just a nice way of saying small, was it not? Which is all well and good for one's home- Terri's own home at Sludge Wave Coast could be described as cozy and she was quite happy with it- but if it's all you knew, all you had permitted to you, if that cozy little space was, as far as you were concerned, your entire world... then, yeah. Small.

Rapunzel, thankfully, spoke up again, preventing Terri's train of thought from getting too far down the line- she suggested Terri help her finish tidying up, voicing the notion that this might help her make all the better of a first impression on her mother. Terri immediately decided this could be a good idea- she had the feeling it was best to try and stay as much on the good side of the mother as possible right now. But even if that wasn't the case, she still had no problem with helping out with a little cleaning. "Sure, I'll be happy to help," Terri smiled. "Find, how about you?" she asked the Cutiefly beside her.

"I'll happily aid to the best of my ability," the Cutiefly buzzed in response. She, after all, was rather small in stature, as Cutiefly so tended to be, but that didn't render her totally incapable by any stretch of the imagination. A light Fairy Wind to deal with hard-to-reach dust here and there, off the top of her head. It'd depend on what Rapunzel still needed done, honestly.

"Excellent," nodded Terri, before turning back to Rapunzel. "Just tell us what still needs to be done, then," she said simply.

Lil'twick – The Djinn's Archives fill you with glee as you rhythmically march down one of its many endless halls. Staccato, your diminutive but reliable Maractus, shadows you, dances to the beat of its own drum—ironic, considering that you were the one that carried the drum with you wherever you went. You find harmony in everything; even the stark silence of the library was but another note played in the grand score of life. Unfathomable troves of knowledge greet you from every direction, beckoning you to peek at the writings contained within. Each shelf a rainbow of culture, each book a story to be told.

But you were not here just for stories. Oh, no. Stories were just words—tales that had been told a thousand times, chords that resolved themselves, a melody that repeats itself beyond the limits of reason. You wanted something new. You hoped to tell your own story, a sonnet crafted not out of the thoughts of others, but from your own experiences and motives. That's what led you to the Department of Arts and Crafts: a technicolor miasma where true ideas were born. Within its walls, you were the poet, not just an everyman without a thought of his own. Its shelves promised endless inspiration, pages upon pages of almost every form of art known to the world (the others were conveniently located in the multimedia section).

A Cinccino in the back waves at you before turning back around to hang a cubist painting on the wall. Staccato seems happy to greet you too, joining you in a small dance before you realize that maybe lifting cacti that just so happened to be really good at dancing isn't exactly your forte. You change your tune and start searching the room for something that synchronized with your own rhythm, eventually settling upon a book that just felt right. Settling it upon the lectern in the center of the room, a bright white shimmering portal forms before you, beckoning you with the allure of a new discovery. The lights are dimmed, your instruments are tuned, and the curtains are raised. You and Staccato jump into the portal without skipping a beat, its light enveloping you as your first song begins.

---

The light fades as you realize that you've arrived in the middle of a town that's unfamiliar to you. It almost reminds you of some of the villages that you've tread through back home in Kalos, but the architecture surrounding you seems just subtly different enough that you're nowhere near your old stomping grounds. You might have also wondered if you had somehow stepped back in time, but the sleek cars that line the sides of the roads dissuade that idea rather quickly. People of all sorts of shapes and sizes enthusiastically weave past each other, all of them seeming to head in a single direction.

It looks like you've been confronted with the first bar of the piece. How will you continue?

Sprawling cobblestone streets and quaint buildings... This felt similar to home. Yet, not. Like a melody that sounded familiar, yet could never be fully recalled. The singular verse that would always slip, fading away into nothing. It was a nostalgic tune, yet for something that he had never heard or experienced.

Shaking his head, Basil looked at the crowd with intrigue. They all were heading in the same direction as if beckoned by something. Why was that? There was nothing he could hear that would imply that. Just the sound of feet against stone streets. A tempo that had no rhythm to it.

Looking at Staccato, he wondered what to do next. Follow along with the crowd, or go against the flow. Well, he always followed his own beat, but this was different. It felt like those around him were in some kind of trance. After all, it wasn't often that a crowded street only moved in a singular direction. This was intriguing for him, to say the least.

"Staccato, what do you think we should do?" the boy asked his Pokemon.

The Maractus paused for a bit, before looking up at his training and pointing in the direction the crowd was going. Seemed the cactus child wanted to follow. Well, if that was the case, they'd do so on their own terms.

With each step the boy tapped on his drum, trying to add some rhythm to the crowd. If he couldn't at least enjoy himself, then what would be the point of this? He knew Staccato felt the same, the grass-type trying its best to play along with its trainer. With their little beat in place, they began to follow the crowd towards their destination.

Lil'twick – You opt to join the impromptu parade out of curiosity (and Staccato's whims), setting the pace with the beats of your own drum. The crowd seems receptive to this; several adjust their gaits to your rhythm, some decide to hum a quiet tune in unison. Staccato isn't counted out either as he tries to keep up with you to the best of his ability, earning the smiles of a few passersby. Despite this, you can't help but wonder why everyone's moving in the same direction.

The crowd eventually disperses after a while. Some move left, others sidestep to the right, but most stop just ahead, leaving you to realize that you're standing in the middle of the brick-paved grounds of a town square. You might argue that it would probably be rather quaint on a normal day, but today it's absolutely brimming with activity. Crowds swirl in an energetic-but-organized frenzy, stands line the streets selling all sorts of gifts and souvenirs, and you can even see a few people tuning their instruments off to the side. A banner loudly proclaims in giant red-and-white letters that you just stumbled into the "103rd Annual Music Festival," however it pales in comparison to the grandiose central fountain that towers directly behind it.

The fountain seems to have seen better days but had been tended to over the years, the bronze statue of a figure that seemed to be the literal personification of music at its peak gleaming in the sunlight like it was just installed yesterday. A plaque near the base of the fountain suggests that there might be some history behind its construction, but you're a little too far away to make out what it says. Beyond that is a stage that seems to be not quite ready for any performance if the several workers unloading equipment on its wooden-plank floor are anything to go by. One of them tells another something enthusiastically and points in your direction, causing the latter to look at you with curiosity.

It seems like there's a lot to check out here. What do you do next?

Basil could hardly believe his eyes, taking everything in. A festival! And this one seems to have been running for a little over a century. That's uh... A super long time. A lot longer than how long he's been alive. Yet, then again, this was a story... So how long ago could this be, truly? He shook his head, not wanting to ponder that question.

He wasn't the only one enthused, as Staccato was taking everything in. Both of them were kids on their first trip to a giant amusement park. It was a sensory overload, sure, but one where they wanted to process it by just bolting off. Unlike an amusement park, there wasn't as much to really go to here. It still looked to be under construction at some parts, if the builders were an indication. They seemed intrigued by him, but well why would he care?

What did draw in his interest was the fountain. It was large, encompassing his eye and the plaza itself. Shimmering bronze illuminated underneath the sunlight, showing as a testament to it not caring about the erosion of time. Though... That was strange, wasn't it? Surely if it had been around for that long it would've oxidized by now. Or did the laws of reality not apply in stories like these?

And that only cemented his curiosity. Grabbing his Maractus's hand as to not lose him, the bard hoped over towards the statue. There was a plaque here, and surely if he could read what was inscribed, then he could get more knowledge of this tale he was in. Which felt a little odd... wouldn't a story be in a different department? Then again, this might be an artist's biography. Well, reading this would be the only way to find out, and read is what he'll do.

Big: With your attempts to chase away the hanging atmosphere, you seek to strike further into the Department, uncertain of what you would discover but with high hopes and a spurring sense of curiosity. Looking around, the space seems near infinite, stretching in each direction as far as you can see. The layout was labyrinthine and yet struck you as meticulously planned, stalwart metallic workbenches spreading out in rows, littered with a cacophony of delicate instruments and glass equipment. Some you recognised, others seemed familiar and yet oddly out of grasp, while others yet gave no clear indication as to function or purpose. More than the visual experience, there was a pervasive smell, unmistakeably that of a laboratory - a strange yet hardly inoffensive mixture of pristine sterilisation and aromatic chemicals, not unpleasant but impossible to completely tune out. You find yourself being sucked into the possibilities of the area, walking somewhat aimlessly for a minute or so with Hotstuff close by, the Charmeleon similarly caught between stunned appreciation of the vastness of the surroundings and a childlike impulse to investigate, no doubt an effect actively fostered by those maintaining the Department. That, after all, was the root of scientific enquiry.

You arrive at what appears to be one of many congregating clearings, presumably used as sites for public lectures. Slightly off from centre of this forum is a looming machine, the sheer size of which strikes a brutally jarring tone with the surrounding sleek modernity. Two capsules rest at either side of the machine, one significantly larger than the other. As you marvel, something perturbing begins to happen. At the periphery of your eyesight, just barely outside of your conscious perception, a visible "buzz" blinks into existence. Fleeting but ominous, reminiscent of bizarre glitches in older computer games, the anomaly lingers long enough to pique your interest before vanishing entirely. Your consideration of this is cut short however, aa s sudden voice enters your mind, vying with your own thoughts in a strangely discomforting manner.

"Welcome, human. My name is Ibra. Apologies for the intrusion, but this is the easiest way for me to communicate. You will quickly adjust. How may I be of assistance?"

A Beheyeem floats into view from above, glowing faintly with a pale blue aura, clearly the source of what you now recognise as telepathic speech.

----

grassy: Your digressional self reflection on ancient works comes to a close with you rooting yourself firmly into the present, resolving with Wisewoods to explore the rich history collected in the Department for yourself. Those pursuing history as an academic outlet often boast of the ability to bring the past to impressive detailed life, but rarely are they speaking literally. Having heard of the Archives and their potential to provide a viscerally tangible experience, you had found yourself inevitably drawn towards the near infinite possibilities. Moving throughout the towering bookcases, the splendid wooden giants flanking you on either side, you feel a mixture of awe and anticipation. In this imposing setting, where you stood as merely one among the millions, lay stories and tales of forgotten triumphs, defeats, collapses and births. So immediate you could physically reach out and seize one, and yet so far removed from your reality that it can seem almost overwhelming.

Finally, you find your quarry. Floating at the centre of an open area scattered with reading tables and comfortable chairs, a lone Sigilyph - the Archivist, Ria. However, her body language is distracted and visibly distressed, erratically shifting back and forth as if locked in a mental struggle imposed upon her physical being. As you slowly approach, you hear a voice ring out, resonating through the library with no discernible source.

"Human traveller. Normally I would be more than happy to receive you myself, but there are pressing matters to which I must attend. Unless your query is short, I may have to ask you be guided by one of my assistants."

A red flash blinds your eyes for the briefest of moments, but you quickly adjust, an Unown can be seen hovering by the side of the Sigilyph, ready and waiting to offer help if required.

Lil'twick – As you take in your surroundings, you can't help but ask yourself a few questions. When was this story taking place? Why did the stagehands seem to care about you? Shouldn't that statue be covered in rust? And how did you seem to find yourself in a middle of a story despite specifically seeking out the department without stories? You were more than a little baffled by these, but that only seemed to pique your curiosity. Seeking answers, you bounded over to the plaque installed at the base of the fountain, its golden letters containing untold wisdom that promised you direction in this unfamiliar land.
Quote:
MELOETTA,
One who blessed
Aleatorica with the
Gift of Music

Rededicated 1998
It was quickly apparent that the statue at the top of the fountain depicted Meloetta—whether that name meant something to you was up to interpretation. Blessing "Aleatorica" with the "gift of music," however... that was something that you definitely hadn't heard of before. You take a moment to think about it before hearing a voice from your right.

"Interested in Meloetta, huh?"

One of the workers from earlier stands by your side—specifically the one that was being talked to, if you recalled correctly. His combed hair and dapper dress suit starkly contrasted with his rather calm and laid-back posture. "One of the stagehands told me about you. Said that you were playing your own music. I think you've got what it takes to assist us with something special that we're preparing for tonight's event," he says, gesturing towards the stage, which now held several rows of chairs facing its front. "It might be a bit of a long journey, but you look like a Trainer so it shouldn't be that hard. Are you able to help?" He looks at you expectantly.
