"...and welcome, one and all, to the final round of today's tournament!" the announcer's voice echoed as the pair of Trainers stepped out onto the battlefield. "Sponsored, of course, by the good people at Apricorp, an up-and-coming Poké Ball manufacturer based right here in Greenmuk City! Now, then- today's finalists! On one end, we have Maribel Masters from the seaside town of Sludge Wave Coast, right here in Fizzytopia! Maribel, of course, is the daughter of notable Poison-type specialist Keith Masters and accomplished Ace Trainer Willa Masters, and from her performance so far today, it's clear battling talent runs in the family! And on the other end, we have Rodney Splashtackle from Black City in Unova! Rodney appears to be the son of the infamous Magikarp salesman, but with his signature Pokémon, he seems to be making quite the point about just how much of an investment his dad's wares truly are!" "This will be a one-on-one battle," stated the referee. "A coin flip has determined that Rodney will choose his Pokémon first. Now... let the battle begin!" he declared. Rodney, a tall, thin teenager whose default facial expression appeared to incorporate a perpetual cocky smirk, gave a chuckle as he prepared a Poké Ball. "It's in the bag," he stated. Maribel grinned confidently. "Don't be so sure of that," she said. "It's not over 'til it's over!" "Well, don't worry, little girl- it'll be over soon enough," smirked Rodney condescendingly before throwing the Poké Ball. "Go, Gyarados!" And in a flash of light, there appeared the Atrocious Pokémon, roaring and shrieking angrily. Maribel looked unfazed by the fearsome sea serpent before her. "Is your Gyarados OK?" she asked. "My mom's is larger than that." "Th- wh- larger than-" spluttered Rodney. "J-just send out your Pokémon already!" he scowled. Maribel grinned at this, Poké Ball in hand already. "Sure," she agreed, throwing the sphere. "Come out- Dracovish!" she exclaimed. And the ball split open, unleashing the amalgamated ancient abomination, who gave a strange bellowing cry, instantly assuming a somewhat derpy battle stance as it noticed the Gyarados it was up against. "Eugh! What in the..." grunted Rodney, who had absolutely not been expecting Dracovish. "Yeesh. What a weirdo Pokémon. Ah, no matter, we got this," he muttered with a grin. "Gyarados! Dragon Pulse!" he commanded. Maribel was quick to respond. "We'll use Dragon Pulse as well!" she ordered. And the pair of Water-types each responded in the same way- a powerful sphere of draconic energy launched from the mouth. The attacks collided in midair, but it was Dracovish's that prevailed, punching right through Gyarados's Dragon Pulse, and continuing onward to strike Gyarados itself. "And the clash of Dragon Pulses ends in Dracovish's favor!" declared the announcer. "Dracovish is, after all, a Dragon-type, whereas Gyarados is not!" "A Dragon-type, huh?" murmured Rodney. "Well, let's see how it likes this! Use Ice Fang!" he ordered Gyarados. Maribel grinned. "Jump and dodge it!" she ordered. "Viiish!" Dracovish exclaimed as it sprang up with its powerful legs, soaring right above Gyarados as it attempted (fruitlessly) to bite down with frigid fangs. "Gyarados, above you!" called Rodney. "Now! Thunder Fang!" Maribel ordered. Gyarados looked up, but even as it did so, Dracovish descended, mouth agape, teeth crackling with electricity, and it chomped down with a remarkably Strong Jaw. Gyarados roared in pain as the electric attack lit up its body. "Shake it off, Gyarados! Come on!" Rodney exclaimed angrily. "Hold on tight, Dracovish!" Maribel encouraged her Pokémon. "Don't let it go!" Alas, Dracovish was only able to hold on for so long before Gyarados was able to dislodge it, but the damage had been done. Even after Dracovish had tumbled to the ground and gotten back up, Gyarados's body still crackled with errant electricity, and its movements had gotten jerkier. "Paralyzed?! What?!" Rodney exclaimed in disbelief. Maribel grinned, seizing her chance. "Use Fishious Rend!" she ordered. Dracovish's entire bottom jaw glowed blue. Taking a running start, the Fossil Pokémon lunged at Gyarados and chomped down with vigor anew, hitting with great power, causing Gyarados to cry out in pain again. "Are you kidding- I- What is that move!?" Rodney whined. "Gyarados! Thunderbolt!" "Dracovish, Seismic Toss!" Maribel ordered. Gyarados, however, was unable to execute the attack as the paralysis reared its ugly head. Dracovish, meanwhile, still biting down, began to spin in circles, whirling Gyarados around in spite of a distinct size disadvantage, before finally letting go, and letting the Water/Flying-type fly right into the wall. It peeled off pitifully after a full five seconds and collapsed in an unmoving heap. "Gyarados is unable to battle!" ruled the referee. "The winners are Maribel and Dracovish!" "YES!" Maribel cheered. As Dracovish ran derpily over to her, she threw her arms around the frankenfossil, while Rodney angrily withdrew his Gyarados and stormed out of the stadium, aiming a kick at the wall on his way out; consequentially, he ended up hobbling the rest of the way out, complaining about foot pain. "Congratulations, Maribel Masters!" the announcer exclaimed. "You've won the grand prize of this tournament- a free tour of Apricorp's Poké Ball factory right here in Greenmuk City!" "Ooh!" grinned Maribel. "That sounds cool!" ~~~~~ One hour later, Maribel had arrived at the place- Apricorp Poké Ball Factory, fittingly located in a more industrial area of Greenmuk City. It seemed like a decent place on the surface- nice clean building, friendly receptionist, and the tour started with no hiccups whatsoever. "...and down here, if you'll look to your left, you'll see where the Poké Balls get painted," said the tour guide as he led Maribel down a hallway and gesturing to a large window on their left. Maribel looked, marveling at the machinery at work, the conveyer belts, the painting mechanisms, and everything in between. She could see a number of Net Balls, Ultra Balls, and Premier Balls being painted. "All paint used is specially coated once it dries to minimize the risk of chipping. Any questions, miss?" "I do have some, actually," said Maribel. "Does this factory produce Master Balls?" The tour guide gave a sigh. "Much as we'd like to, that would require the Silph Company to loosen its tight hold on the blueprints," he said. "Though that hasn't stopped our research and development team from working around the clock." "Oh, are you working on new kinds of Poké Balls?" asked Maribel. "That is some of what we're hoping to achieve, yes," nodded the tour guide. "Unfortunately, at the present time, we have yet to come up with a unique design of our own. So another thing we've been doing is attempting to enhance and mass-market types of Poké Ball already on the market. One such thing we're working on is attempting to enhance the catch rate and effects of certain types of Poké Ball that work better on specific types of Pokémon, such as the Rocket Ball." "Uh huh," murmured Maribel. "What other kinds of Poké Balls are you working on?" "Ah, well, I may have already said too much as it is," chuckled the tour guide, though he was looking around nervously. "L-let's continue the tour-" he began, but before he could take two steps, a door to the right of them burst open. A small orange and black Pokémon raced out, squealing and snarling angrily, and not far behind was a thin man in a lab coat, an empty vial clutched in one hand. "Jenkins!" hissed the tour guide. "M-Mr. Appletun, sir!" stammered the scientist. "I- I'm sorry, sir, it broke free, and-" "I don't care!" hissed Mr. Appletun. "Get this under control while I try and smooth things over- I have the tournament winner here for her factory tour!" Maribel, meanwhile, had taken out her Rotom Phone and was aiming it at the crazed creature before her. "OK, Rotom- who's that Pokémon?" she murmured. "Tepig, the Fire Pig Pokémon. A Fire-type," said Rotom. "Tepig roasts berries before eating them, but can get too excited and burn them to a crisp instead. Note to self- never get a Tepig to cook for me." Maribel, however, had nothing to say in response to Rotom's snarky aside for once- the Tepig before her had a crazed, angry look in its eyes, and was reacting violently when Jenkins tried to grab it. "What-" began Maribel. "Ah, nothing to be concerned about, little girl," said Mr. Appletun, raising his voice to cut off Maribel's question before it could be spoken. "That man is Alvin Jenkins, one of the brilliant minds of Apricorp Research and Development, and he, ah, he's having a bit of trouble with the Pokémon he, ah, recently caught-" "Well, wait," frowned Maribel. "He's trying to pick it up and carry it. If he caught it, why doesn't he just use its Poké Ball?" "I... well, you see, that's a very good question," stammered Mr. Appletun. "Now, then, if you'll follow me-" "Hold it," said Maribel. "Something isn't right here. What's really going on?" Jenkins, meanwhile, was having no luck. "Stay still, you serving of self-cooking bacon!" he grunted as he struggled to hold the angry Tepig in his arms. In the process, however, he dropped the empty vial, which rolled over towards Maribel. Mr. Appletun attempted to grab it, but Maribel was quicker, and her eyes widened as she read the label. "...Berserk Gene?" Maribel read out loud. Mr. Appletun gave a sigh. "...fine," he relented. "One of our projects is working on enhancing the Shadow Ball." "The Shadow Ball?" repeated Maribel. "What- that's a Pokémon move, though, not a-" "No, no, it's also the name of a Poké Ball," Rotom piped up. "A sinister energy is imbued in the design, making it easier for caught Pokémon to be turned into Shadow Pokémon." Maribel's mouth fell open. "...that's horrible!" she exclaimed. "How can you possibly think it's a good idea to-" "Because the company paying us to do this is paying us very generously," interrupted Mr. Appletun. "Or, will be, once we've perfected the design, anyway. Their vision for the finished product is a Poké Ball that instantly and irreversibly converts whatever it catches into a Shadow Pokémon. No muss, no fuss. And you, little lady, will not be saying a word about this," he added suddenly, frowning at Maribel. "Apricorp, you see, needs all the good publicity it can get, which is why we sponsored today's tournament in the first place-" "GAH!" exclaimed Jenkins, for the Tepig had finally broke free of his grip, and was running down the hall. Maribel immediately gave chase, with Jenkins and Mr. Appletun not far behind. "Hey! Stop!" Jenkins called out. "Get back here!" roared Mr. Appletun, his pleasant demeanor fading at an alarming rate. As they rounded a corner, however, the employees found themselves tangled up in a hastily-spun web of String Shot, the source of which they could see as Maribel, further still down the hall, was accompanied by her Pinsir. "Teeeep... Teeeeeep..." Tepig growled threateningly as Maribel drew slowly closer. They had reached a dead-end in the hallway, and Tepig had nowhere to run. Maribel knelt down. "It's OK, Tepig," she said softly. "My name is Maribel. I'm not here to hurt you, OK?" She reached into her bag slowly, and took out what appeared to be a pale yellow wedge of cake of some sort. "Here," she said. "My Uncle Gavin just got the shops in this region to import these from Orre. It's a Poké Snack, they're delicious." Tepig sniffed the tasty treat warily. The Berserk Gene was still messing with its mind, but at the very least, the fact that it was currently smelling something delicious was registering. Carefully, it stepped forward, and took a small bite. And then another bite. And then a much larger bite. And then three or four bites in almost indecently rapid succession. Maribel smiled as Tepig's wariness melted away as fast as the confusion, the Poké Snack working its magic as it served to satisfy the Fire-type's appetite. "Tepig~" it squealed happily. However, once it registered where it still was, its smile faded. "Tepiiiig..." it murmured. Maribel frowned. "Ah, yeah, you don't like it here, do you?" she murmured. "Whether Tepig likes it or not is of no consequence," came Jenkins's voice. Maribel turned around- the employees were approaching, still trying to pull strands of String Shot off of their clothes, but by and large they were free of the web. "That Tepig is in the middle of an important experiment!" Maribel folded her arms and stood in front of Tepig, a defiant look on her face. "You're hurting Tepig," she stated. "And for what? For trying to improve the performance of the most reprehensible type of Poké Ball in existence? I should've guessed something was up when Mr. Appletun mentioned the Rocket Ball- you guys work for evil teams to create special Poké Balls for them!" she said accusingly. "...You know, you talk too much, little girl," said Mr. Appletun ominously, producing a Rocket Ball from his belt. "And we at Apricorp, as I said, thrive on good publicity..." "So why the Berserk Gene?" demanded Maribel. "Heh. That was my own idea," Jenkins smirked proudly. "We're testing its effects to see if it can be used to enhance the effects of the Shadow Ball- GAH!" he grunted as Mr. Appletun slapped him in the face. "Jenkins, you bumbling Bidoof!" hissed Mr. Appletun. "Why are you telling her these things?!" "What's the difference?" shrugged Jenkins. "It's not like anyone's gonna believe her." "Is that so?" Maribel's Rotom Phone piped up, floating down before Jenkins, playing back video footage of the past few minutes. "Video footage doesn't lie, bitch." Jenkins's eyes bulged. He made an attempt to grab the devious device, but Rotom deftly zipped out of the way. "Enough of this nonsense!" barked Mr. Appletun as he threw the Rocket Ball, from which an Alolan Raticate appeared, sneering at Maribel as it materialized. Jenkins, taking the hint, threw a Rocket Ball of his own, this one causing a Grumpig to appear. "Pinsir!" Maribel exclaimed, gesturing to the Alolan Raticate. Pinsir, hissing determinedly, charged at the Dark/Normal-type. "Use Bug Bite!" "Tep..." Tepig murmured, looking wonderingly up at Maribel as she fought the bad men, Pinsir's Bug Bite managing to make Raticate back off. "Raticate! Hyper Fang!" ordered Mr. Appletun. "Harden!" Maribel called out. "Rrrrraticate!" exclaimed Raticate as it lunged. However, its fangs couldn't get through Pinsir's rock-solid body, and it was forced to back down. "Heh," smirked Jenkins while Maribel was busying herself battling Raticate. "Grumpig, Power Gem!" he ordered. "Gruuuum!" squealed Grumpig, its black pearls beginning to glow... "TEPIG!" Maribel looked just in time to see Tepig suddenly lunging at Grumpig, forestalling its Rock-type move, causing it to wildly misfire, damaging the ceiling instead of the Pinsir. "Tepig!" smiled Maribel. "Wow, that move- that was Sucker Punch, wasn't it?" she said. "Tep pig!" Tepig nodded proudly, before turning back to face Raticate and Grumpig, standing beside Pinsir. It took Maribel but a moment to look up Tepig's other attacks with her Rotom Phone, partly because Rotom had already anticipated this and was quick to provide the list, short as it was. "OK!" she stated. "Pinsir, Slash attack! Tepig, use Body Slam!" "Sssssssir!" hissed Pinsir, lunging at Grumpig and taking a wild swipe with its claws. "Teeeeeepig!" Tepig exclaimed, jumping up and landing hard on top of Raticate. "What- that Tepig's listening to her!" exclaimed Jenkins. "Gah, we can't have that! That Tepig is crucial to our experiments! Grumpig, grab it!" he ordered. "Oh, no, you don't!" Maribel declared defiantly, throwing a red-and-white sphere at Tepig. "Poké Ball, go!" she exclaimed. And Tepig, taking the cue, actively turned around and slammed right into the ball's button. The sphere opened up and sucked Tepig inside, whereupon it barely wobbled before falling still. "Tepig has been registered to your Pokédex!" Rotom piped up. "...GET HER!" thundered Mr. Appletun. His Alolan Raticate and Jenkins's Grumpig were happy to oblige, advancing on Maribel, who didn't look too bothered. "Pinsir, High Horsepower!" Maribel ordered. And Pinsir charged! Tackling both Raticate and Grumpig with great force, Pinsir practically threw them both into their Trainers, knocking them on their backs. Maribel smiled at Pinsir, then withdrew him and ran for it. Maribel ran. She didn't slow down even as she waved in acknowledgement to the oblivious receptionist who told her to have a nice day; she only slowed down once she was two or three blocks away from the factory, and even then, she sent out her Salamence and got on his back, urging him to Fly them home. Salamence, getting the idea that this was urgent, wasted no time. Once they'd landed in Sludge Wave Coast, Keith and Willa were quick to approach. "Maribel, sweetie, how'd it go?" Keith asked. "No time to explain just yet," said Maribel. She whipped out her Rotom Phone. "Rotom, can you send the video footage you took to the Greenmuk City police department?" "I'll go you one better- I already did," Rotom responded. "While you were running down the streets. Those jerks are probably in handcuffs as we speak." "Jerks? Handcuffs?" repeated Willa. "Maribel, what's going on?" Maribel breathed a sigh of relief at Rotom's words, then turned to face her parents. "I won the tournament," she said. "The prize was a guided tour of Apricorp's Poké Ball Factory, but while it was going on, this crazed Tepig got loose, and I found out they were experimenting on it with Berserk Gene, to see if that stuff would be any use to them in enhancing the effects of the Shadow Ball." "The Shadow Ball?" Keith repeated. "Wait, so-" Maribel nodded grimly. "They want to make it so any Pokémon it catches turns into a Shadow Pokémon instantly and can't be purified." "That's abhorrent," spat Willa. "Why..." "Apparently some company is paying them a lot of money to do so," said Maribel. "And they seem to do a lot of work on Poké Balls for evil organizations, too." "Wow, that's... geez," Keith frowned. "So wait- what happened to the Tepig?" he asked. "Oh! Right!" replied Maribel, taking out the Poké Ball and opening it up. Tepig materialized on the ground before the Masters family. "Tepig, you're safe from those bad guys now," she smiled. Tepig smiled broadly. "Tepig! Teeepig!" he cheered, before jumping up into Maribel's arms. Maribel giggled. "I had only used the Poké Ball to get you out of there safely, so I was gonna ask you if you wanted to stay with me," she said. "But I'm guessing you already answered that?" "Teeeeepig!" Tepig responded, still smiling as he nuzzled his new Trainer affectionately. "Well, I'm not sure how I feel about you ending up tangling with such shady people," said Willa. "But in the end, it seems all turned out well." "Indeed," Keith nodded. "Definitely sounds like you did the right thing today, sweetie," he added. "We're very proud of you." Willa nodded her agreement with this, and the family moved in as one for a hug. Tepig, still in Maribel's arms, ended up in the middle of it all, but the Fire Pig Pokémon didn't seem too bothered by this- all the more proof that he was now in a loving environment. OOC: Picking up my Tepig in Poké Ball #8 of 10. No nickname, and declaring his Ability to be Thick Fat. Thanks! |
