Sunflora Slumbering Wilds Raid Battle 8: Torterra!

Raid Boss Torterra
★★★★

Health Gauge: 100%
Shields Up: 0
Status: Hail [8]

Raid Challengers

Lil'twick, Cryogonal: 300 HP
MM, Ninetales Alola: 300 HP
CCK, Vanillite: 300 HP
Yuki, Sewaddle: 400 HP
SpinyShell, Sandshrew Alola: 300 HP
Slash, Escavalier: 300 HP
Median Dia, Araquanid: 400 HP
Enigma, Sandslash Alola: 400 HP
raves, Darmanitan Galar: 300 HP
Zelphon, Shadow Dragapult: 500 HP

Torterra pays no attention to the puny trainers gathering around his body as he continues to shear off entire treetops, munching the bark and foliage in as loud and obnoxious a manner as possible. Splinters of wood rain down from above, but as the Raiders call their champions, something else does too. Large chunks of hail pelt down around the clearing, the sudden shift in temperature finally gaining the attention of Torterra... as well as his ire.

Dynamax initiative: Yuki, Sewaddle

  • Trainers may only list 1 order per round. They are also permitted to using 1 item in lieu of an attack.
  • Dynamax Initiative will select a trainer at random. If a trainer has initiative, they may choose to Dynamax their Pokemon for a duration of 3 turns. Dynamaxed Pokemon may only select a Max Attack of a corresponding type from their registered moveset, or Max Guard in place of status moves.
  • When issuing an attack, please state the attack's unbuffed Base Power (BP).
  • If a hold item or ability’s effect is activated in the present round as a result of the previous round’s damage calculation or the present round’s orders, please state it clearly in your response.
  • Roleplaying your orders is optional, but up $500 may be collected for role played responses of equivalent words, per standard rules, and Bond will accumulate only for the trainer’s active Pokemon in battle.
  • You have until Saturday, 12th January to place your order.

Not much I can do about the hailstones, but I can do something about other falling objects. Wide Guard (0 BP) can help keep its attention focused, I'm sure!

Terri smiled faintly as they approached the mountainous Torterra. Her last encounter with the species, if even one could call it that, was... not a pleasant one, to say the least. But that hadn't been an actual Torterra, merely an illusion created by a Phantump to impede her progress... Terri shook her head slightly- she didn't like thinking back to that day if she could help it. Indeed, this was her first time encountering a nactual Torterra. Grass and Ground... Not a commonly seen type combination, to say the least, considering Torterra was... the only Pokémon to sport it. But, uncommon as the type combination was, far less uncommon was the knowledge of the best way to deal with said type combination. Namely, Ice-types. Such was the reason for Terri's choice in Pokémon here today.

Terri looked over at this Pokémon at that moment. A Ninetales unlike those known well in most regions; far from the standard Fire type that would be quite the double-edged sword in this particular fight, but rather, the gorgeous Ice and Fairy-type Alolan Ninetales. Ava's nine fluffy tails billowed out behind her, the air around her noticeably cooler than elsewhere. It was little wonder, Terri noted to herself, that there were some people in Alola that thought of Ninetales as deities of some sort- a sight such as this approaching someone lost somewhere on Mt. Lanakila, it'd certainly inspire more than a little awe.

"Here we are, Ava," Terri murmured. "You ready to do this?"

"I believe so, yes," smiled the Alolan Ninetales. "This... should be interesting."

Terri nodded. "Interesting indeed," she agreed. "Remember- you have the type advantage, but Torterra almost certainly has moves that would let it fight back very effectively," she warned.

"Understood," Ava acknowledged.

Once they approached, and saw the myriad of other Ice-types (as well as several other Pokémon that most certainly had other things to contribute here nonetheless), Ava stepped forward. "Niiiiiiiiiiiine~" she called out. And as though beckoned into existence by the Ninetales's voice, grey clouds billowed into being above them all, before opening up, unleashing specks of ice and flakes of snow onto the combatants, friend or foe. Truly, there's no warning like Snow Warning.

Terri, however, was not such the fool as to think this would last. Torterra surely had some tricks up its figurative sleeve to ensure the weather did not remain like this for very long, so that was all the more reason to act on it now. "Ava, Aurora Veil!" Terri commanded.

"Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiine~" howled Ava, summoning a shimmering rainbow veil to cover not only herself, but also everyone else present. Not quite as effective as getting up an actual Reflect and Light Screen, but certainly quick and easy; it might not be the best, but right now, it was the best they had, and Terri, for one, would take it.

OOC: Ava used Aurora Veil (0 BP; Hail is in effect; at this time of year; at this time of day; in this part of the region; localized entirely within your Power Spot)

It seemed like clockwork at this point. Almost monthly, really. It seemed like there was almost a set schedule for the Power Spots around Fizzytopia to overflow with chaotic energy. Darik mused that maybe he should reach out to some of his peers more specialised in that field. Maybe the Power Spots here worked differently. That could be a good research subject.

This time, it was a Torterra causing chaos around the Slumbering Wilds. Grass and Ground type, with a lot of physical power at its disposal. As a Grass Starter from the Sinnoh region, it also had a devastatingly powerful move in Frenzy Plant. As well, like most Ground Pokemon, it could easily learn a large pool of Rock moves, which could threaten a lot of Pokemon gunning to capitalise on its array of weaknesses.

Running down the list of Pokemon on hand at the preserve, a few Pokemon stood out. Snorunt was just a bit too weak for a fight of this calibre right now. She'd have her day later. Cloyster couldn't stand up well to those Frenzy Plants at all. There were a fair few Bugs, his nephew seemed to attract Pokemon of that type the way he himself attracted Dark Pokemon. Hmmm... But those rocks could be a threat. Except to their Escavalier, actually. Nothing the standard Torterra had could make all that much impact on her, and she did have the peak of Bug moves learned in Megahorn. Well, it would probably be boring and one-note, but it should at least be efficient. He picked up Joan's Ball to head out.

Sunny Delight (Dee for short), their Sunflora, decided she wanted to come, as well, in a spectator role. The promise of seeing a strong fellow Grass type in action really fired her up. Quite literally, at that, as she had a habit of making her petals glow and shooting flames from her face. She seemed so excited by the prospect that he could not turn her down.

At the Slumbering Wilds den, they confronted the Torterra. The trainers sent out their Pokemon together. Joan crossed and SHHHINNKed her lances together as she emerged, ready for them to put some work in. She reared up, ready to charge at the massive Torterra before them.

The team seemed to be very Ice-heavy, as an Alolan Ninetales' appearance caused clouds to gather and a hailstorm to start coming down. There were 5 other Ice Pokemon besides it brought as well. Rock moves may be an issue, but having so many strong Ice STAB moves in one place would make this pretty quick work. Dee's face fell. She liked the sun, even mild sunlight, and hated when it was rainy, hailing, or a sandstorm was whipped up. Joan, due to her Overcoat, did not have to worry as much about the hail. She'd be safe from the ice chunks.

Darik shouted his orders to the Escavalier, likely the only ones he'd have to give for this raid, over and over. "Use Megahorn, Joan!"

OoC: Megahorn (120 BP)

Ethan felt the frigid hail begin to pour down, pelting and slicing through the wilds. The plan seemed to be agreed on, as he watched an Alolan Ninetales emerge and start to set up an Aurora Veil. Other trainers ordered their moves, so it was obvious that some of the Pokemon here weren't as clearly coordinated. No matter, that didn't matter. All he had to do was wait and strike at the perfect moment.

Seeing that his move would perfectly go off, he looked towards the regal Cryogonal and began to give his orders.

"Razor Snow!" Ethan barked the Cryogonal nodding in agreement.

Razor Snow, a move that was uniquely discovered here in Fizzytopia. While it seemed to be something similar to Razor Leaf at first, its true potential was unleashed during a hailstorm. The razor-sharp snowflakes doubled in power, ripping the target to shreds as well as unleashing a new, deadly status condition.

Frostbite, from his own research, seemed to function much the same as standard poison. It would eat away at the foe and could only be cured through fire or fainting. It was similar to freeze, but the use of Ice Heal gave... mixed results at best. Still, this was all he wanted hail for. With Aurora Veil, Torterra would struggle to pierce their defenses. Even if a lot of the raid brought types weak to Earthquake.

"Hmm, now to see what the Torterra does," Ethan mutters underneath his breath. It would only be a matter of time before the awakened tortoise fought back.

Torterra is subjected to a violent, frosty assault right out of the gate. A number of Pokemon levy chilling Ice attacks against him, dealing devastating damage. A number of Bug type moves find their way into the fray, leaving the titanic turtle more than a little disgruntled. His fury now fully piqued, swirling winds engulf his body as energetic swords dance wildly around him - and this boost is soon brought to pay in full glory. With a roar, Torterra summons a rousing Max Rockfall to bury Stella, a Max Quake soon crashing headlong into Everst. The Sandslash reels, thankfing his lucky stars he managed to hold on... but unfortunately for him, this relief does not last long. Thickened vines erupt from the ground and converge upon him, beating him mercilessly and claiming an early victim.

Let's Dynamax and bust through some Shields with Max Darkness (based off of Bite; 110 BP)!

The pressure had been applied, already driving the Torterra to the point of erecting its protective barriers. On the raiders' side, a barrier of their own had been established, an Aurora Veil set in place to offer some mid term protection to the entire raiding party. The Torterra hadn't had an opportunity to disturb the weather before the veil could be put up, but its Max Rockfall afterwards caused the hail to start to dissipate.

Dee looked up hopefully as the hail was disrupted, a small smile forming. That is, until the sandstorm proved to replace it, making her even more upset than the hail had, crushing her hopes. She blasted a shot of flame at nothing in particular in her rage.

Luckily, an Aurora Veil, while requiring a hailstorm to be created, would last its full duration unless broken, even if the hail was later disturbed. And Torterra didn't normally have any natural access to anything that could break screen moves. Also luckily, Joan stayed unshaken, with both her Steel typing and Overcoat ability making her not have to worry about a Sandstorm any more than a hailstorm. She continued to slide her lances together, light sparks coming off them. She knew well her role here was to hit hard and continue the pressure.

"You know what to do, Joan! Proceed with another Megahorn!" Darik called to her.

Megahorn (120 BP)

Ethan had a cheeky grin on his face, seeing Alrik's Razor Snow bring the Torterra to shields. Abusing its ice weakness was certainly playing in their favor, which almost certainly meant that it'd clear away the hail as soon as it could act. And that intuition was correct, as Ethan watched a Max Rockfall slam into the Shadow Dragapult.

Covering his eyes from the brewing sandstorm, the man watched as the ALolan Sandslash got annihilated by the hulking tortoise's next two attacks. THat had got to hurt, a lot. Bring its shields up, it hits back by knocking out an ally. Well, all was fair in battles like these.

With quick discussion with his teammates, it looked like shield-breaking duty fell to him. While Triple Axel was shaky in terms of accuracy, it was their best bet to deal the most damage once shields broke. After all, Razor Snow was only at its peak in the hail. With that decided, it was time to have a little bit of fun breaking the shield.

"Sometimes the best way to get ahead is to deal some chip damage... Okay Alrik, break one of those shields with your Ice Shard attack!" Ethan ordered, knowing the Cryogonal prized itself in its battle prowess. As fast as the wind, sharp as a knife. Even the little bits counted to fell a foe.

Terri had seen it coming. It didn't surprise her in the slightest. If that Torterra had a brain in its skull, this would be the first thing it'd want to do, and sure enough, it did; after everyone had had their say with various powerful attacks, culminating in the Cryogonal unleashing a most curious move called Razor Snow, Torterra was quick to fight back, and fight back most effectively. First came the Swords Dance, which made perfect sense- build up that Attack power- but then came exactly what Terri had been expecting; Max Rockfall. Torterra caused a massive monolith to erupt from the ground before it, then tipped it over right onto the Dragapult for big damage. But what was more pressing was the effect it had on the battle as a whole; namely, the hail Ava's very presence had set up was forced to cease, and in its place, a howling sandstorm whipped up. This... was not a particularly pleasant experience for Terri. It reminded her of another part of that day- namely, the part where she was nearly eaten by a Palossand. Just before aforementioned act of gluttony, Terri had found herself in what she thought to be a simple sandstorm, until her sending out her other Ninetales didn't dispel it. But if this memory was bothering Terri any at this point in time, she hid it well.

"Ugh," grunted Ava, expressing her displeasure at the change in weather. "We may have seen this coming, but that doesn't make it any less irritating..."

"Agreed, but there isn't much we can do at the moment," said Terri. "At least you managed to get up the Aurora Veil, that's going to be a big help."

"True," conceded the Alolan Ninetales. "So what's the plan now?"

"Hmm," Terri considered, eyeing Torterra- a powerful shield had popped up before it. Obviously not impeding any of its own attacks, a point driven home quite nicely as it knocked out an Alolan Sandslash with no trouble, but any attacks coming its way were not landing. Not until that shield was broken completely. "We wait, at least for now," Terri murmured. She looked around, waiting, watching as the other Pokémon launched their attacks. One of the Pokémon, an Araquanid, even Dynamaxed, and with a potent Max Darkness, took out an even more sizable chunk of the shield than any of the others! Ava, getting the idea, watched as well, waiting for her moment to strike- Terri surely had great confidence in her ability to hit Torterra, and hit it hard, if she was letting all the others handle the shield instead. And finally, as the Vanillite's Icicle Spear shattered the barrier once and for all, Terri sprang into action, knowing exactly which move to use here. "Use Triple Axel!" she commanded.

"Niiiiiiiiiiiiiine~" howled Ava as she charged forward. As graceful as she'd looked before, she was gonna look even more graceful now as she delivered this surely devastating blow to Torterra! Three kicks, three consecutive kicks imbued with frigid energy, each kick packed with twice the power of the previous one... it was a move of great and awesome potential, and against an opponent whose greatest weakness was Ice, it would be all the better. Granted, the Swords Dance had the potential to... be problematic. But they could deal with that later. Or at least, they hoped.

OOC: Ava used Triple Axel (20 BP; hits three time; second and third hits have twice the power of the previous hit).

The pulsating barriers protecting Torterra make the situation seem grim, but the spirits of the Raiders are soon rallied as their fallen comrade cheers them on, the surrounding energy amplifying their voice and shattering one of the screens, much to the chagrin of Torterra. Worse for the lumbering beast, the gathered Pokemon each take their turn to launch an assault, ranging from screeching Signal Beams to rousing, chivalric Megahorns. Finally the last bulwark is torn down by a lone Vanillite, the brave ice cream standing defiant in the face of terrifying odds. As Ava sees her opening, the Ninetales performs a neat pirouetting strike - once, twice, thrice her hind legs connect with her foe, who roars in desperate response. Raising a leg thicker than a tree, Torterra smashes the ground with violent abandon, a bone shattering Earthquake ripping through select Raiders. This is followed with a fulminating Max Quake levied against Flurry, the Vanillite whimpering as he struggles to hold on. Darmranitan is beset by jagged boulders, the Stone Edge tearing through her skin and triggering her transformation to Zen Mode. Lastly Ava, no doubt in recompense for her well timed Triple Axel, is felled by yet another raging Frenzy Plant.

Dynamax initiative: Median Dia, Araquanid

  • You have until Wednesday, 16th June to place your order.

Terri soon came to realize a fatal flaw in the notion to Dynamax the Araquanid; namely, all of its status moves would now become Max Guard, should any of them be attempted. A wonderful way to protect one's self, but not so much for protecting one's allies. And the thing about that was, one of the Araquanid's status moves was a most wonderful one known as Wide Guard. They had been under the protection of Wide Guard at the beginning of the fight, and it was here and now that Terri was realizing just how much they were truly benefiting from that. Torterra drove that point home quite nicely with a powerful Earthquake! Of all the targeted Pokémon, only the Cryogonal emerged unscathed, being able to Levitate above the move with ease. Next came a Max Quake into the Vanillite, leaving the Casteliacone copycat in shaky shape, and then a Stone Edge into the Galarian Darmanitan, triggering a curious transformation and reigniting a long-dormant flame sac. Terri took note of this, wondering if her own Darumaka would be capable of a similar transformation when he evolved. But alas, she didn't have very long to dwell on this, for the final blow dealt this round was from Torterra's forceful Frenzy Plant attack, and that blow was dealt to Ava, knocking her clean out! "Ava!" Terri called out.

"Niiiiine..." mumbled Ava, lying on the ground before her Trainer, clearly in no further shape to battle.

Terri knelt down and petted the Ninetales. "You're doing great, Ava. Thank you," she smiled, before taking aim with the Premier Ball. "Ava, undo," she said, withdrawing the Alolan Ninetales. It was at this time Dynamax Energy welled up in the Wishing Star in Terri's Dynamax Band. Some of it leaked out, swirling around the Premier Ball, working its healing magic on the frigid fox within, but much of it remained in the Wishing Star, as though waiting for its wearer to act.

And act Terri did! Torterra didn't have a shield up, so that left only one thing to do. Her first thought was the Vanillite, but decided against it- after all, once Ava recovered and was sent back out, the weather would shift right back in their favor (perhaps the one upside to how things went this round for the Alolan Ninetales), and that would surely be of more help. Instead, Terri's eyes fell upon the Dragapult. The coloration was alarming- this, surely, was a Shadow Pokémon. A fighting machine with a closed-off heart. She'd heard of them. Keith's Ledian, Stewie, used to be one. And she'd heard of them from her father, as just one example of many as to why humanity was horrible- Terri shook her head at this point, really not wanting to think back to those kinds of conversations just in general, least of all in the heat of battle. But nevertheless, the Shadow Dragapult seemed to have been just as battered and beaten down by this battle as the Vanillite had. It was a tough decision for Terri Alph, and even as she took aim at the Dragapult, and let fly a bundled beam of Dynamax Energy that would surely help to heal up its wounds, she wondered whether she chose correctly.

OOC: Cheering to heal Stella the Shadow Dragapult.
