Genesect Sun Moon Team~

I recently got challenged by someone in Sun/Moon and I would like to make a team to beat them silly. A few caveats though, I generally like to use lesser used OUs/BL/RU Pokemon. For example, in XY I loved my RU Drapion and UU Arcanine.

So what am I planning for Sun and Moon?

Ninetales-Alola @ Light Clay
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Freeze-Dry
- Moonblast
- Aurora Veil
- Encore

Gyarados @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 112 SpD / 132 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Bonemerang
- Shadow Bone
- Will-O-Wisp

Slowbro @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Psychic
- Slack Off
- Thunder Wave

I'm not sure who the rest should be, or if Slowbro should be there (that twave nerf hurts). Aurora Viel works best with hyper agression and that's generally not my style so not sure who else to use. Clearly some sort of Choice Bander (Araquanid?).

Ideas?

Both Slowbro and Araquanid make you an auto-lose to Magnezone. As it stands, electric/steel is already a huge threat to your team. I would bring Mudsdale, as it does benefit pretty strongly from Aurora Veil's reductions and you can get some crazy defense with Stamina.

Mudsdale is crazy strong and will probably end up being top tier in OU the way things are going. It also has an added bonus of having the feel of a draft horse - hits hard, built like a brick, gift that keeps on giving. However, at current it's criminally underutilized so you should be able to enjoy using it

Consider also adding a grass type to finish off that fire/water/grass core. Which one exactly is up to you but a few good ones did show up in alola.

What would be a good set for Mudsdale? Rest? It seems really slow and while it hits hard, I'm not sure. I don't mind taking off the slowbro since I have Gyarados.

No idea what grass types are good this gen. That's generally not a type I use. I didn't like that mantis Pokemon a whole lot. I don't really like super slow 'mon.

Also I should say this fated battle of destiny is on Friday. So hopefully people can suggest stuff before then. I already have the Ninetales/Gyarados so the rest shouldn't be too hard.

Magnezone doesn't counter your team as long as you have Alolawak. Lightningrod and its typing pretty much messes up every Magnezone set known to man.

Alola-Ninetales shouldn't be running any bulk, really. Max Sp.Atk allows you to have a very solid chance of OHKOing Specially Defensive Pelipper if its used to screw over your hail, which min Sp.Atk cannot do. Otherwise the set is solid.

That Mega Gyarados set needs to be running Jolly, otherwise its outsped and KOd by Tapu Koko, which +1 Adamant can't deal with.

Any specific reason for the Alolawak EV spread? Otherwise its solid, although I prefer Fire Punch over Flare Blitz as Alolawak is a very good catch-all check for a lot of things and without something like Wish you don't want it getting worn down. The one thing I will say is there is very little reason to run Adamant usually. Something like Careful fits a lot better.

Thunder Wave isn't quite as good anymore so running Fire Blast or Ice Beam over that slot is a good idea.

A solid Grass-type to use along Gyarados is Tapu Bulu. You can use the Choice Band to soften up (or just flatly kill) counters to Gyarados or Assault Vest to act as another sponge for Slowbro (since it takes Electric, Grass, and Dark attacks very well). It's in my opinion one of the best Grass-types in the game right now. Also provides Grassy Terrain, which gives Mega Gyarados some recovery.

In the final slow, it really depends on what you feel the team needs. Right now, it lacks both hazards and hazard removal, which can be an issue for Alolawak, since it doesn't like switching in on Stealth Rock. If you don't feel the need for hazards, you can run a good defogger. If you don't need or want that, something like Z-Conversion Porygon-Z, Autotomotize Celesteela, or Alakazam can be used since you lack a good source of special power. If you are willing to use Island Scan you can also use something like Serperior (assuming you can get Contrary) or Reuinclus.

Your team is pretty solid otherwise though, at first glance.

I love the Tapu but I dont want to run any legends. Again, lesser used mon.

Some of the EVs I got from Smogon and arent set in stone. Do bulky Pellipers really survive Freeze Dry?

Im not the type that uses entry hazards. I figure Encore can deal with it while I set up with Gyarados or someone.

Im considering Mudsdale instead of slowbro. Who would be a good defogger? And whats a good Pory-Z set?

I'd drop slowbro and pop CB tapu bulu, Alolan Sandslash, and Scarf Tapu Lele onto your team. Mgyara is a pretty bulky water in its own right, so I hesitate to say slowbro is necessary here, especially since it doesn't fit that well on the BO build you have going. CB bulu is fantastic for reasons Emi stated. Alolan Slash works great as an emergency revenge killer, easily outpacing key speedsters like mega alakazam. It also has rapid spin to support tales and maro. Scarf Lele is nice in that it's inarguably the best cleaner in the came, right now. I'd also recommend trying out substitute over eq on gyara- Aurora veil makes subs hard to break, and honestly water/dark hits most stuff anyway.

Edit: ah, no tapus. Hmm. Will add in more thoughts later.

Serperior honestly seems like your best bet, then. Real strong cleaner and breaker both. An SR setter would round the team nicely, so something like Garchomp, or, if you want something less standard, nihilego are good options. Unless you don't want to use Pseudos or UBs either.

0 SpA Ninetales-Alola Freeze-Dry vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Pelipper: 232-276 (71.8 - 85.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage and Leftovers recovery

They don't do it well, but its better to just straight OHKO it, especially since bulk doesn't do much.

Mudsdale is way too slow and is walled by a lot of stuff like Celesteela and Skarmory. It's honestly not very good.

Defoggers are an issue because most of the good defoggers i don't think have access to it. there is always tapu fini tho

Porygon-Z @ Normalium-Z
Timid Nature
252 Sp.Atk / 4 Sp.Def / 252 Spe
-Thunderbolt
-Conversion
-Ice Beam
-Shadow Ball

Disagreeing on Alolan Sandslash, its really not that good especially since hail isn't really a focus.

Slash isn't sweeping, it's an primarily a spinner, a grass counter (alolan marowak is rocks weak, slower, prone to dying from recoil.), and an emergency check to things can outpace his whole team. It doesn't NEED hail for two of those jobs.

I'm liking Palossand WAY more than other people here seem to. Could be a good fit into your team if you want some stall/defense. Here's a general sense of what to run with various customizations.

Palossand w/Leftovers/Weakness Policy/Groundnium-Z - Passo Berry if you want can work too vs. water types.
Bold Nature (Modest if going offense)
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpAtk if you're going for a stall/def style
or 2 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Def for more offense mix

Earth Power
Shadow Ball
Giga Drain (OR Protect/Amnesia)
Shore Up

Pory, Palossand, and Serperior sound boss. Dont know when Serpeior shows up or if anyone already has a contrary one.

So about Palossand, it it immune to water?

Anyway, originally I wanted a hail team. Unfortunately most ice types suck. Ice really should have been given Fairy resist. So thats why I didnt go with Sandslash and went with Marowak.

Palossand still keeps its weakness to Water, sadly.

Two things:

1. It's still weak to water, but if you use a Passho Berry on it it will really help greatly while still activating Water Compaction, as Passho Berry will cut a super-effective Water attack's damage by 50%, which is pretty good. One time use though. Use Shore Up to recover, and Giga Drain to counter any enemy water types while also recovering health.

2. Marowak can learn Blizzard and Ice Beam - just sayin'.

Another option to consider for Pory-Z is making it a Ghost type by putting Shadow Ball in the first slot, or if you're sticking with Electric Pory-Z, giving it Recover instead of Shadow Ball for longevity.

Marowak has less Sp.Atk than SpecsChamp. It's like...50.

What ability is preferred for Porygon-Z?

Anyway here's my team for now:

Ninetales | Light Clay | Snow Warning
Timid
Evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spd
Freeze-Dry
Moonblast
Encore
Aurora Veil

Gyarados | Gyaradosite | Intimidate
Adamant
Evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spd
Waterfall
Crunch
Earthquake
Dragon Dance

Alola Marowak | Thick Bone | Lightning Rod
Adamant
Evs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 112 SpD / 132 Spd
Flare Blitz
Shadow Bone
Bonemerang
Will-O-Wisp

Palossand | Weakness Policy | Water Compaction
Bold
Evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Shadow Ball
Giga Drain
Shore Up
Amnesia

Porygon Z | Normalium - Z | ???
Timid
Evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spd
Thunderbolt
Conversion
Ice Beam
Shadow Ball

Apparently Island Scan Pokemon don't have hidden abilities so.. that's out. I need a 6th.

blegh at that point your best option is probably bounsweet's evo because alolan has like no grass types that fit nicely on this team barring tapu bulu.

Trop kick hjk rapid spin synthesis is your best set there prolly.

Also go download with pory. CB Gene is really good now so people tend to give download satk boosts

How do you get Genesect in Sun/Moon?

Do I really need a grass type? Also my team has weird moves like.. 2 Pokemon with ground moves except for the ground Pokemon. 3 Ghost moves on three different Pokemon. Surely I can switch things up, right?

oh derp yes. I'd go adaptability in that case.

Definitely pop sub on gyara for reasons stated earlier. Poryz can run tri attack over either tbolt or sball if you don't mind losing to bulky waters/alolawak

Grass type is definitely negotiable but it's usually best to have fire water and grass on the same team. Same for dark fighting and psychic, same for steel fairy and poison, etc.

I might add the tapu then, but it feels like my team is still missing stuff. Like, I don't have any psychic, poison, steel, or flying moves. No hazard, hazard removal, phazing, priority moves. There's a lot of overlap and not as much coverage as I'd like.

Tapu Bulu | Leftovers | Grassy Surge
EVs: 112 HP / 252 Atk / 144 Spe
Adamant
Leech Seed
Bulk Up
Horn Leech
Brick Break

Bulu gives me a fighting move and grass move. I still feel like there's adjustments to make here.

Also been thinking of dropping Palossand since I have a ghost and water already.

Any suggestions for who might fit in, after adding Bulu?

There's always Skarmory since it has good role compression, but it all depends on exactly what you want it to: phazing, hazards, hazard removal etc

I'm thinking like..

Iron Head
Brave Bird
Roost
Whirlwind

With Sturdy I can guarantee Whirlwind will get off if things get dangerous.

Although now I'm not sure if theres anything I can do about not having a priority move. Anything I can swap around for that?
