Sunflora Summershine Cup Round 1 - Pest vs myahoo

A gentle breeze blew across the Stardust Fields. Kamui, leaning against a tree, awaited the arrival of the two combatants - this time around, two female Trainers. He contemplated calling one of his six partners to his side, but truth be told, he didn't really need to, so he opted to give them a rest. Truth be told, he actually preferred a bit of alone time for now... he needed to refocus, reawaken his battle senses while being away from the public eye. Being this Cup's new referee didn't exactly keep the spotlight away, but he was glad enough that he wasn't the main attraction like he'd been all his life growing up in Saigo.

The woman named Melissa brought along a black pup, a determined-looking Houndour... On the other side of the field, Tempest chose a Kadabra who, ominous as it might look, is probably in for a tough time against a Dark-Type opponent... although, weaknesses and resistances are only a fragment of Pokemon battles. He'd wait and see how everything played out.

"Let's start off with a Leer and then give them a sharp Bite. If they can handle that, we'll see how they handle a Dark Pulse."

Given the type matchup was heavily skewed her way, Melissa wasn't quite as worried as she probably could have--or should have--been, though at least this match against Pest was as a lot more clearly delineated than her last one had been.

"Kind of an unfortunate setup, but oh well. Start with Magic Coat, then Counter that Bite and follow it up with a nice Drain Punch."

ROUND 1

These two have faced before.
Kamui couldn’t tell how he knew, but it was there: that look on the face of two Trainers measuring forces for the second time, scouting one another for familiar actions. And if Tempest and Melissa knew one another, this could make for an even more interesting confrontation. It was one thing to duel a stranger, and a completely different affair to face an acquaintance.
Despite being the faster of the two, Pest’s Kadabra intentionally allows its foe to make the first move, meeting its fearsome glare with a tactical counter: suddenly, Prince finds itself staring at a veil with mirror-like properties, and as a result is confronted with a twisted version of his own Leer, turning the tables on Melissa and instead causing her own partner to let down his guard out of fear. Smart move by this Tempest girl. She knows what she’s doing… it’s no wonder the legendary Uxie answers to her.
Prince knows he’s been played, but the majority of the damage done was to his ego; fortunately, the only thing that Coat reflected was a Leer, and the Houndour is more than capable to keep going. To prove it, he lunges at Minerva and seeks his teeth into her, somewhat amazed at the opening she gave him… but the reason soon becomes apparent, as an invisible surge of energy pierces through him inflicting twice as much pain! The Kadabra quickly follows it up with a short-range Drain Punch, absorbing some much-appreciated health in the process, though the blow isn’t as severe as one would think – Kadabra, like every representative of the Abra lineage, rarely employs its muscles for much of anything, and as a result its physical prowess is underdeveloped. In a way, that reflected Leer helps even things out and Minerva once again outmanoeuvres her foe!
But Prince isn’t out of gas yet, and he has one card left to play: converting his boiling his frustration and anger into pure darkness energy, he unleashes a burst shadows that washes over the Kadabra, hitting for impressive damage, this time finally without being countered or otherwise used against him!
Pest has so far made the most of her partner’s abilities to work around the innate disadvantage of Minerva, effectively retaliating a doubled Bite damage to wreck her opponent's health, topping it off with a super effective punch that, all in all, brought Prince's health to half in a single round! Melissa, on the other hand, had the bad luck of going first but still managed to hurt her opponent considerably with a great exploit of Kadabra's weakness! How things play out from here?

Pest smiled, but kept her cool. Things were looking better than she'd hoped, and Minerva had the upper hand for now ... but this had only just started, and those fighting-type moves were pretty energy-intensive. If they weren't careful, they'd wear themselves out completely. Relying purely on physical moves like those probably wasn't a good idea. "Looking good, Minerva," she called. "Let's switch it up a little. Miracle Eye, followed up with a Psybeam. That should be a bit easier on you. Throw in a second Psybeam for good measure."

Melissa and Wildfire both winced as the Counter and Drain Punch landed, one after the other. "Okay. That was...pretty terrible," Melissa admitted under her breath to her Cyndaquil's agreement, watching as Prince finally managed to land a hit. She had definitely been too cautious last round, but at least that hadn't backfired on her entirely.

"Spite that Kadabra, Prince, then Heat Wave and Dark Pulse again." Prince glanced back at her, visibly smarting from the skewed exchange, and nodded after a moment. Spite to wear his opponent down and the other two as screens and attacks both. Hopefully, this would work better than the last set of orders.

Minerva had a spectacular first round, opening up a wide lead despite the type disadvantage. The referee notices that Kadabra is getting too comfortable with the match, opting to expend large amounts of energy into a singular attack. Concentrating with immense focus, Kadabra starts to float midair as she crosses her legs. With a bright fuschia glow around her body, the psychic becomes illuminated with a third eye constructed from energy that pops up on her forehead, which is nothing short of a miracle some might say. The canine foe is looking a bit ecstatic at his next technique, as if he is going through a moment of schadenfreude. Setting a curse around the psychic, Prince spites the life force right out of the opponent making her consume equal amounts of energy for the technique that she just used. The attack couldn’t come a better time, exemplifying that energy stall is a valid strategy to employ. Minerva's eyes widen in disbelief as she feels the drain take a heavy toll on her body.

Exhausted, and with no discernable benefit to talk about, Minerva twists her spoon to a ninety degree angle before unleashing a rainbow-colored blast. The Psybeam strikes the now vulnerable dark typed pup for respectable damage, but nothing too drastic. In fact, Prince shrugs it off all together as something that could have been much worse. The royal dog sets his eyes to go back into the offensive against the menacing opponent. Opening up his mouth wide, he fills both cheeks with fire energy before letting out a giant gushing wind of fire energy. An eminent Heat Wave is spread out by the dog, catching the psychic head on. The referee could picture Myahoo expressing to the Kadabra something along the lines of “betcha you didn’t see that one coming”. Kadabra tumbles a bit on the terrain, shaking off the harm endured as she gets back up on her feet a few steps away, her third eye looking rather fashionable.

The original psychic, the first line of psychic first introduced into the franchise, refocuses on the opponent as she tries to keep up with damage to the best of her ability. Bending her spoon once more, a ray of multi-colored lights is sent out by the proficient psionic pokemon. Psybeam travels a bit unpredictably before hitting Prince right on his side. Again, the attack is nothing too remarkable as the pup barely skids across the field, shaking off the harm done in a jiff. Finally, the pup decides to no longer take it easy, going for pain, and possibly blood. Well, maybe not blood, but surely a lot of pain. Opening his mouth wide a loud wailing noise is emitted by the put as several plum colored rings move between the amplitude of the energy wave. The enigmatic Dark Pulse crushes the spirits of Kadabra, leaving her squealing in pain as she takes several rolls on the terrain. The match is not over yet as Minerva stumbles a bit to get back up showing that she still has what it takes to continue on with the match. Prince observes from a comfortable nine feet away.

As you guys know, in the pokemon world one day you are in, and the next day you are out. Who will rise or fall after this interaction?

The defensive drop to Hondour should be gone by the end of the next round.

Next to order: myahoo

"Yes!" Prince darted a quick glance back at where Melissa and Wildfire were spectating, giving his tail a brief wag before turning his attention back to his opponent.

"Okay. We did awesome just now, but should we keep it up or pull back?" Melissa surveyed the battlefield in thought and then nodded when her starter made a dubious sound. "No, you're right. Prince! Fire Spin and then two Dark Pulses."

Prince paused, turned her instructions over in his mind, and then nodded. Fire Spin to try to obscure his opponent's eyesight and keep them in one place, and then Dark Pulses to chip away at their health. Though if the vision obfuscation worked, it'd probably be a good idea to hit the Kadabra from different angles.

"I guess that could have gone better. Sorry, Minerva! Uh, there's not a lot we can do with such low energy ... take a breather, then, a nice long one. Afterwards, try to push your way out of that Fire Spin. It'll hurt, but you can fix that with a Drain Punch. This probably won't work, and I'm sorry, but you did great anyway."

Prince is quite pleased with the events of the previous round. Adding insult to injury, the pup traps the psychic pokemon around a fiery vortex. By spewing flames out of his mouth, the fire dog pyrokinetically forms a spinning turbine of flames. Kadabra is helpless with the fiery display surrounding him. Minerva bides her time inside the fire to see if she can gather rest in order to restore some energy levels. Tempest is pessimistic as she sees an almost improbable way out for her partner who is suffering on the field. The psychic feels empathy for the trainer, trying to do her best at not letting down her friend she too knowing how dire the situation is.

The demon prince of the possible underworld, which the referee wonders if there are any cuddles behind the dark typing, readies another wailing of plum rings. Opening his mouth, a pulse of dark enigmatic forces is released into the giant column of fire. Kadabra is helpless, unable to see to the outside despite the third eye as the attack traverses the wall fire. The blast knocks Minerva out of the flames whilst enacting a world of pain upon the psychic, who did not see that coming in the most literal sense (again). Tumbling on the terrain, Minerva prays for a miracle as she continues to pant in search for a breather that would allow her to survive.

The dance between the two pokemon is about to end relatively soon, depending who acts first. Minerva does not want to disappoint her trainer, trying her best to give it all. Tempest looks over at her friend, knowing that the Kadabra did everything to the best of her abilities and no hard feelings are felt across the air. With the reassurance of her trainer, Minerva rushes into for a fatal blow; her fist is covered in fighting energy. Twisting her arm in a screwdriver punch, the Kadabra drains the vitality out of the pup as a critical hit is suckered into the cheek of Prince. A resistant growl is heard at first before turning into a loud yelp of pain from the pup, backing away from the intense harm as he closes his eyes to register the harm. The health is added to that of the psychic, though we still see the spoon wielding pokemon fading out of conscience. With a few blinks and her fist still extended, she starts to feel weak and overwhelmed by fatigue which effectively knocks her out of the match. myahoo cheers for her partner, realizing that the match has ended in favor of Prince. The pup opens his eyes, realizing the favorable outcome.

Minerva is unable to battle! myahoo is the Winner!

Melissa and Wildfire exchanged excited expressions as the ref called the match for Prince, running down the field the moment it was safe (and legal) to do so.

Prince, meanwhile, opened his eyes and blinked at the sight of his downed opponent, slowly registering that yes, he had actually won. He glanced back at the sound of approaching footsteps, tail beginning to wag and grinning at the sight of his trainer and teammate.

Wildfire stopped in front of Prince, grinning up at the other Fire-type. "Congrats."

"It was a bit of a slow start, but we did do well, didn't we?" Prince replied, before looking over at his opponents. "Excuse me a moment."

He padded over to Tempest and Minerva, stopping a polite distance away and then waiting until he had their attention before he continued. He bowed respectfully to them. "Thank you for the match. I hope we can meet again in less...divisive circumstances."

"Thanks for the match." Melissa couldn't help the wry smile as she nodded at Tempest, having followed Prince over to the other trainer. "At least it wasn't dragged out this time?"

"We had a clear Type advantage, this time," Wildfire said, turning to lead the way to the nearest Pokemon Center or place where Prince could heal. "And even then, we almost didn't win."

"That was my fault for wanting to start off cautiously and in close-range, instead of just hitting from afar." Melissa scooped up her starter and set him on her left shoulder. "But, definitely something to keep in mind in the future."

"Who are we up against next, by the way?"

"Not sure." Melissa pulled up the tournament lineup, but the spot above her name was still empty. "Looks like the other battle hasn't finished yet."

"Do you recall which Pokemon our opponent might have?"

"Looks like..." Melissa blinked and stared when she found the trainer-Pokemon listings. "Uh, it'll be either a Purrloin or a Steelix."

Prince abruptly halted, staring incredulously up at her, while Wildfire peered closer at the screen. "A Steelix!?"

"That's...actually what it says here."

"I don't know if I want the Steelix to win or not," Prince said, still a bit stunned but beginning to walk again. "On the one hand, Steel-types are weak to Fire and I'm allowed to use Solarbeam; on the other...it's a Steelix."

"...let's just wait and see how that turns out, alright?"
