Rebuilding Knowledge- Cantrips

"Be sure to keep yourself safe, Princess. It's still a dangerous world out there," flows a gruff, male voice from the room next door as Shiro wraps her cloak around herself.

"Don't worry, father. We're going to be fine!" She turns to leave, giving her meditite time to catch up. "I'll call if we find out anything about mother."

And with that, Shiro Mahouhime shut the door on her old life and took her first steps on the path of adventure. A southerly breeze blows through the town, bringing the promise of a warm day (by Azalea's standards) as she makes her way to a place she's seen a few other aspiring trainers head to begin their quests: the Gym. She maintains her calm composure as she approaches the iconic structure, but can't help but crack an excited smile as she pauses in front of the doors.

"At long last... It's a few years too long, but I'm finally heading out on my journey," the young albino whispers to nobody in particular, earning a nod of acknowledgement from her partner. She takes a deep breath before opening the doors and walking purposely inside, eager to receive her first quest.

Escaping from the warm-but-still-slightly-chilly weather of Azalea City, Shiro ducks timidly into the Azalea Gym. Immediately, she is met with a gush of warm air. Basked in sunlight and warmth, a few lush trees stand tall in the Greenhouse Gym, the place clearly being a sanctuary for both humans and Bug Pokemon. A pair of Butterfree dance around in the air, spreading their majestic wings as multiple Sewaddle dart in and out of pushes, engaged in a game of Hide and Seek, almost oblivious to the existence of the many trainers and citizens standing around, socialising and requesting for quests. The Gym certainly possesses an entrancing, tranquil atmosphere.

Now in the Azalea Gym, Shiro, having made her way to the Quest Board, looks at the Quests laid out in front of her before she feels a light tap on her shoulder.

"Hello there," a middle-aged, benign-looking woman smiles. "Are you perhaps a new trainer? It may be a little bit of a handful for a young trainer like you, being so far, but would you accept my request to deliver something to Violet City? No need to feel compelled or anything, but of course, I have prepared some good rewards in store."

The woman says, with a playful glint in her eyes.

What will Shiro do?

"Woah!" Shiro couldn't help but be surprised by the beauty and warmth within the building. In comparison to the almost empty town outside, it seemed like an entirely different world!

"Hello there." The sudden voice snaps Shiro back into reality, causing her to notice the woman before her for the first time. The lady continued with her speech upon noticing that she has Shiro's attention, not giving the new trainer time to greet her back.

"Violet, huh? That's to the east, right?" Garlic gave her a subtle nod, confirming that was the case. Violet was out of her way, lying on the opposite path Shiro needed to go on if she wanted to achieve her goals. From what she had heard, it also even colder there than it is here in Azalea, easily making it the more difficult choice in terms of survival.

On the other hand, she technically hadn't started her journey yet, giving Shiro the opportunity to take a quick detour. It might make Garlic a bit stronger as well, which is going to be necessary if they ever got ambushed or something. Now would also the best time to head out there, anyway, since the warm breezes should make the cold a little more manageable for the time being anyway.

Having let all these contemplations run through her head, the heroine of this tale comes to her decision. "I'll be glad to be of help!"

Receiving an energetic reply, the woman gave a warm smile. Taking a small red package from her pouch bag, she handed it to the young trainer. Then, moving her right hand into her pocket, she grabbed something small, placing it on top of the package. It was a small amulet resembling a miniature bag.

"This is a charm that kept me safe when I was at your age, travelling through the the lands. It was a magical time, yes it was. I loved adventuring and seeing new things," she continued speaking, reminiscing upon the memories dreamily. "Then, the Disasters struck. The lands of Kanjohto has certainly seen better times..."

"Ack, I have began to nag!" she chuckled, her upbeat, child-like giggle snapping the monotonous voice that had previously seized her, "I must be getting old. Anyway, once you reach Violet City, look for a man named Francis. He should be at the Violet Conservation and Restoration Headquarters. Try looking for him there. He actually works as an archaeologist at the Ruins of Alph, but he returns to Violet City pretty frequently after each excavation is over and stays there for a good while."

"Also, last thing, on your way to Violet City, please do help any Pokemon or trainers in need. In times like this after the Disaster, it is the kindness of people that will make the Kanjohto Region return to its former glory. You might want to get going soon and I'm counting on you!"

With that, she flashed another one of her warm, motherly smiles, but momentarily, she almost looked like she was a child - young, innocent and fun-loving.

"Also, last thing: on your way to Violet, please do help any pokemon and trainers in need." Shiro already couldn't help but smile a bit as the woman spoke, but this statement really made it widen.

"Don't worry about that, I was going to do so anyway!" she exclaimed, her own enthusiasm showing through her words. "We've all been living rough lives recently, after all!"

"You might to get going soon, and I'm counting on you!" the lady finished, flashing one of her bright, almost childish smiles.

"Right! You can on me, ma'am! I'll be back!" Ending the conversation there now that she has her mission(s?), Shiro quickly exits the building. Much to her lagging meditite's relief, her energy seems to die down a bit with the heat, clearing her head and giving her room for thought.

The package and the charm were heading towards an archaeologist named Francis, who lives in Violet. Even more surprising, the guy's working. Shiro knew many of the lands directly east of Azalea were doing far worse, so she found it kind of hard to believe that they were already researching the ruins again.

"The world must be healing well after all, huh?" she stated, to nobody in particular. Then, in a louder and more heartfelt voice, she proclaimed that it was time to go. Those grasslands weren't going to cross themselves!

Saying her goodbyes to the lady, Shiro eagerly darted out of the Azalea Gym, but not before some of her energy disappeared as her initial, bubbling excitement met the increasing temperature. With the day drawing towards midday, it was certainly not going to get cooler anytime soon, especially if she was going to stray even further away from Azalea City. The closer towards Violet City she was, the warmer and the drier the climate would be.

"Pi-piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!"

A sound emanated from above. On a nearby tree two meters tall, a strange, pink object was stuck amongst the dense leaves, head buried in the elevated foliage of the tree, in a rather comedic fashion with its shorts stubby legs sticking out, flailing wildly in an attempt to loose itself of the strange and seemingly weak "constraint". The flailing appeared to be rather futile, with the wind certainly working against the Cottonweed Pokemon, pushing it further into the trees rather than out of the trees. The Hoppip continued to emit a cry, though it sounded less distressful and more amused.

What will Shiro do?

It wasn't even a full minute before the second part of Shiro's employer's orders came into play. Her attention is quickly drawn to sound of a pink poke mon struggling to free itself from a nearby tree. A sudden gust of wind pushes the creature further into it's gnarled limbs, revealing two long leaves protruding from it's round body. Though Shiro couldn't tell what kind of pokemon the being was, it wasn't hard for her to guess that was nowhere near being in it's proper climate. The poor thing must be pretty uncomfortable here!

"Do you you see the pokemon in that tree, Garlic?" she asks the monkey-esque 'mon at her side. She waits for it to nod that this is the case before continuing on. "Can you try and get down from there, please? We can't leave it to it's struggle!"

Having received her simple command, Garlic leaps off her trainer's shoulders and climbs up the tree.

Receiving instructions from her trainer, the Meditite darted off Shiroe's shoulders, grabbing onto one of the branches of the tall tree. Moving with agility and power, the Fighting Type Pokemon, having a natural talent of scaling difficult and arduous heights, made short work of the great and somewhat intimidating vertical height, easily reaching to where the 'strange object', stuck in the tree. The Meditite curled her fingers around the Pokemon, before plucking it out of the tree.

Round, pink, and a pair of emerald green, jagged leaves sprouting out of its head, the Hoppip grinned in excitement as it darted out of the Meditite's hold with a great deal of energy, dancing through the air gracefully, while at the same time expressing - or more like singing - its appreciation. The lively grass typed Pokemon spun and landed on Shiro's travel bag. At an abnormally high speed, the Hoppip quickly grabbed the charm that had been entrusted to Shiro, "biting" - or more like holding it between its mouth - the vital quest item, before moving back into the air. Giving a somewhat muffled, playful squeal, the Hoppip danced around the trainer, well out of reach but not too far away.

Suddenly, its eyes shifted to its left, widening as if something caught its attention. With a charm still in its mouth, the Hoppip took off, towards Route 32, almost instantaneously disappearing into a distance. Following hot on its heels was a Butterfree, along with a few other Pokemon, all heading in the same general direction.

As if things could not get any weirder, footsteps emanated in a high speed crescendo from behind, and a boy smacked right into her with great force, with him suffering the recoil as well, stumbling backwards.

"Ack! Butterfree, wait up!" the boy shouted. He had raven black hair, tucked under a cap which was thrown off from the force of the impact. He donned a red jacket with white stripes, and wore a pair of long, blue pants. "Hey! What happened to my Butterfree?"

He stared, eyes drilling into Shiro, his brown eyes an interesting mixture of anger, accusation, suspicion and confusion.

What will Shiro do?

Garlic had succeeded in getting the round creature out the tree, though it wasn't exactly the most appreciative of rescuees. It wasted no time in leaping out of the monkey's hands, startling her as it glided down to Shiro and snagged the pendant she was charged with delivering. It darted off again as the girl gave a surprised "Hey!", curiously being pursued by a giant butterfly as it made it's way to the edge of town.

"Note to self: hide satchel in cloak.," Shiro muttered as she started to give chase, her meditite expertly dropping onto her shoulders. They didn't get very far before a black-haired boy crashed into them from behind, yelling something about butter being free and waiting.

"Hey, what happened to my butterfree?" the kid demanded, clearly in a hostile state of mind. Judging from the the odd events from the past thirty seconds and her own decade-old memories, Shiro determined that by 'butterfree', the guy was referring to the creature that chased after her thief.

"It just chased off a wild pokemon," she replied earnestly, picking herself up off of the snow-covered ground. "They're headed out of town, from the looks of it. If you'll excuse me, sir, I have to go get my charm back from your pokemon's target!"

Having explained the situation as quickly as she could, the young trainer turns around and starts running again, Garlic following closely. "We're going to need to hurry if we're going to catch up to them!" she shouts over her shoulder, urging the boy to follow.

With both the Butterfree and the Hoppip having taken off into a distance, the teenage trainer listened to Shiro's explanation about why the pair had gone off, he could not help but instead found Shiro's theory a little bit strange.

"Huh, for Butterfree to do something so... heroic and brave, that's definitely a first, if not a little out of character," the boy thought aloud, but his words seemed to have little effect on Shiro, who had already started moving towards Route 32, in hot pursuit of the pair. Yelping, he quickly picked himself up, before dashing after her.

"Hey, wait up!" he called, straining his body to accelerate to catch up to Shiro. Stretching out one of his hands, he grabbed her wrist, rather hastily, attempting to stop her motion, though rather unsuccessfully, sending the two just short of almost barreling onto the soil of Route 32. As the two regained their balance, the boy suddenly blushed, growing suddenly conscious, before withdrawing his hand sharply. The flustered boy cleared his throat awkwardly, before returning to the important topic.

"My Butterfree is usually pretty timid, so I was thinking it was odd for her to do something like this. But anyways, I think since those two are flying, it'd be hard to pursue them now, considering we're on the ground. Let's wait until they roost and stop moving, and then we'll get the two Pokemon. And how do we that..." he said, pausing for some suspense.

Curling his fingers around a Pokeball on his belt, the trainer took out the red-and-white sphere. An instant flash lights up the close vicinity, as a yellow figure revealed itself, seated flat on the floor. While small and appearing almost insignificant, this Pokemon seemed to radiate an aura of strong psychokinetic powers, its powers hidden behind the closed eyes and deceivingly ordinary yellow body. Gingerly, the Pokemon stood up, but grimaced, flinching slightly for some unknown reason, as if he was sensitive to the environment. However, this did not disturb the Psychic Pokemon too much evidently, as it quickly returned to its calm composure.

"This is my trusty Abra," the boy beamed with pride. "He can help us locate those two, with his awesome psychic powers. Please, my friend, detect where Butterfree, along with a charm-snatching Hoppip is. Keep your radar open constantly to see when they are stopping or roosting or are no longer staying in the air. Thanks!"

The yellow Pokemon nodded, its brows furrowing in intense concentration. The concentration was quickly broken, when the Abra started nodding profusely, as if it had located where the duo was already.

"So fast? And they're stationary on the ground somewhere? Sweet! We'll get them in no time!" the trainer grinned, clapping his hands in excitement. "Thanks, bring us there, Abra!"

"Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce myself," the boy stopped, making a strained expression as if he was trying to stop himself from bolting off. "I'm Shuuichi, nice to meet you, though under rather strange circumstances. You're heading to Violet, right? Then I suppose more the merrier?"

Grinning, he stretched his right hand out for a handshake.

How will Shiro respond?

"Hey, wait up!" The boy shouted as Shiro took off, too much in a hurry to notice that he had been speaking. She gasps in surprise when he grabs her wrist, clearly trying to stop her... for some reason. Of course, that didn't go according to anyone's plans, and the two stumble across the diminishing slush like a couple of drunks.

After regaining her balance (with some help from her pokemon), she turns agitatedly toward the boy to ask what what he was thinking, but pauses upon seeing his face. For some strange reason, his face had gone red. 'Does he have a fever?' she wondered as he withdrew his now-warm hand.

Whether that was the case or not, the kid was quick to bring the awkward scenario back to the problem at hand. He briefly explained how it would be too difficult to catch up to them as things were, due to their 3-dimensional movement, making Shiro realize that she had been too hasty again. Things were moving too fast for her again, it seems. "Let's wait until they roost and stop moving, and then we'll catch the two pokemon," the boy suggests, clearly building up to something big. "And how we do that.."

Whatever his plan was, Shiro certainly hoped it would be effective in catching the pink orb. The sooner she could reacquire the relic, the sooner she could return to the lady in the gym and begin her quest in earnest. "What do you have in mind, sir?" she asked, trying to keep her voice as calm as possible.

The boy grabs a pokeball from his belt and releases the yellow being within in response. "This is my trusty Abra." Shiro couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed- not only did the being seem a little on the frail side, but it was also one she'd seen a few times with trainers that got their starts months before her. Seeing her disappointment, he explains the plan, giving orders to Abra as he goes. "He can help us locate those two, with his awesome psychic powers. Please, my friend, detect where Butterfree, along with a charm-snatching Hoppip is. Keep your radar open constantly to see when they are stopping or roosting or are no longer staying in the air. Thanks!"

It doesn't take long for Abra to locate Butterfree and the theif, shocking both trainers and Gralic with his efficiency. The responses varied from "Woah! That was fast!" and "So fast?" to "Medididitite!" It's trainer took the reins for reacting sensibly. "And they're stationary on the ground somewhere? Sweet! We'll get them in no time!" He smiled as his excitement built it's way up, and he clapped his hands to emphasize his next line. "Thanks, bring us there, Abra!"

He suddenly stopped, as if he just remembered something, causing Shiro's own invigoration to die down a bit. "Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce myself," he stated, suddenly looking a bit nervous. "I'm Shuuichi, nice to meet you, though under rather strange circumstances."

"My name's Shiro. It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Shuuichi-san!" the pale girl responded after a brief moments hesitation. Why did he suddenly become so nervous? Does it have anything to do with his reddening earlier? Regardless of what the case may be, Shiro knew that it wasn't what's important now. She'll have to wait to figure it out.

Having received this information, Shuuichi continued with his awkward transition. "You're heading to Violet, right? Then I suppose more the merrier?" With the words finally out into the world, he seems to calm down and even smiles as he puts out his hand.

'I so no reason not to. We're heading in the same direction, anyways. Who knows, perhaps Abra can help Garlic learn to use her psychic abilities better!' she contemplates. Having come to her decision, Shiro takes the black-haired boy's hand and gives it a good shake. "It would be rude to say no, seeing as you're helping me out right now. Now, then, don't you have a butterfly to catch?"

The greetings now out of the way, Shuuichi began marching towards Route 32, while beckoning Shiro to follow, with the Abra in the lead. For such a seemingly frail creature, the Pokemon was moving at a surprisingly brisk pace through the rather marshy and uncomfortable route. Meanwhile, Shuuichi was carefully maneuvering through the spare patches of land in this marshy region, minimising the damage done to his clothing.

"It sure is arduous, getting up to Violet City," Shuuichi remarked as he and the Abra steered towards the west, moving further away from the seaside, which hid the sunken Union Cave and towards a small collection of mangrove trees to the west. "This mud and marsh and all is making it quite annoying. I'm gonna probably drop by the Pokemon Centre to get my clothes washed the first thing we get to the city, after getting that Butterfree and Hoppip back, of course!"

Suddenly, a voice cried out to their east. A man suddenly appeared, moving out of a collection of dead trees which had presumably concealed him from the views of the trainers initially. He looked like he was in his 20s, but one glance into his eyes could immediately reveal that the man could not be trusted. In his eyes, one could see a suppressed glow of menace and deceptiveness, and his cloak and hood did not help the impression that he had something bad up his sleeves. Certainly a shady individual.

"You two are looking for that Butterfree and Hoppip, am I right? If so, I know where they're heading to," he said. "Of course... nothing comes free, so for a light cost of $300 I'm willing to spit out some facts and bring y'all there. Though one thing's for sure, y'all are not getting anywhere close to your targets."

"So what about it? Deal?"

Shuuichi glanced at the Abra, who was pointing towards the mangrove forest insistently, whereas the man seemed to be suggesting that the other direction was the correct one...

"What do you think, Shiro?" Shuuichi turned to face the female gender. "Follow the Abra or follow the man? Your verdict."

The snow quickly gave way to a worse element as the pair of trainers walked further into the wilderness, as the melted snow blended itself into the earth. 'Ugh, this mud is even heavier than snow!' Shiro thought to herself, grateful to have her walking stick to help her move easier. Shuuichi was also complaining about the trek, but he mentioned getting his clothes cleaned upon reaching Violet, which made Shiro realize that he only had one set of clothes. She started to fidget a bit at the thought, though it didn't seem that Shuu noticed.

He did notice the really shady guy come out of the woods, drawing her attention to him. "Oh, dear..." she muttered, before drawing herself up and putting on a scowl to give herself a far more threatening appearance. She knew from experience that untrustworthy individuals tended to aim for people that look the most trusting and innocent, which made her somewhat disappointed that the man had seen her without her hood up already. Trying to put it on now would just be silly.

"You two are looking for that Butterfree and Hoppip, am I right? If so, I know where they're heading to," he said. "Of course... nothing comes free, so for a light cost of $300 I'm willing to spit out some facts and bring y'all there. Though one thing's for sure, y'all are not getting anywhere close to your targets. So what about it? Deal?"

Unfortunately, Shuuichi actually seemed to be on the fence regarding this, despite the fact that his own pokemon was certain that the targets were in the other direction. Thankfully, he decided to leave their choice to her.

And Shiro's never had a single poke in her life.

"We'll keep using our own resources, thank you!" the broke trainer declares, sealing the pair's fate.

With Shiro addressing the man's suggestion with a solid rejection, Shuuichi nodded in agreement, though rather reluctantly - there was a hint of annoyance in his brown eyes, perhaps at himself for not being able to make decisions and trust his Pokemon. Giving a sloppy wave to the shady man, Shuuichi turned and began to follow the footsteps of the Abra, back towards the forest.

"Snarl."

A clear, penetrating command, short yet forceful resonated in the air. Shuuichi only had a moment to turn backwards before a wave of black energy shot forth, aimed at the Abra. The Psychic type was shielded from the brunt of the attack, but it came at a cost, with the trainer being unfortunately in the line of fire. The impact of the surprise attack sent him tumbling into the ankle deep marsh with a muffled "thump" sound.

The offender was a Sandile, who remained fixed on the same patch of dry land as the shady man. The man, who was clearly the trainer of the Ground type Pokemon, growled at both Shuuichi and Shiro.

"Damn it, now some brats are interfering with the poaching, how annoying. The Butterfree had to be some kid's Pokemon who cares about their Pokemon just vanishing, bad luck there. Ah well, it should still fetch quite a sum in the market, so there's no way you're gonna be getting it back," the man grinned menacingly, "now stay still as I tie you down. The more cooperative you are, the less excruciating it'll be. Maybe help will come to you... in half-a-day or something."

Groaning, Shuuichi picked himself up, though somewhat wobbly, his clothes stained with mud. Thankfully, he did not seem to suffer any long-term effects from taking the brunt of the previous attack.

"That hurts, you ass - and there's no way I'm letting you take Butterfree," Shuuichi snarled, his words almost matching up the ferocity of the Sandile's attack. "Shiro, let's teach him a lesson. It's two versus one, we have the number's advantage in this case."

The man laughed, though it reeked of cruelty and sadism, but he was clearly amused by the turn of events. "Very well, you like to do it the hard way, huh? Let's dance, then."

With tensions escalating into a fierce Pokemon battle, striking first could mean a gamechanger. How will Shiro respond - will she respond with violence?

"Snarl."

'It's amazing how a single word can ruin someone's day,' Shiro thought as Shuuichi intercepted the glob of shadowy energy with his own body. She quickly identified the grievous assaulter to be another pokemon she had never seen before, this time some sort of brown crocodilian. It didn't look too strong on it's own, but the earthy texture of it's scales told her that Garlic's punches weren't going to be very effective against it- and judging from Abra's reaction to the creature's attack, he was also at a disadvantage. That, and his trainer may or may not be out for the count...

"Damn it, now some brats are interfering with the poaching, how annoying," the poacher grumbled, not happy about her choice. "The Butterfree had to be some kid's Pokemon who cares about their Pokemon just vanishing, bad luck there. Ah well, it should still fetch quite a sum in the market, so there's no way you're gonna be getting it back," the man grinned menacingly, "now stay still as I tie you down. The more cooperative you are, the less excruciating it'll be. Maybe help will come to you... in half-a-day or something."

"Not a chance, crook," Shiro retorted, swing her walking stick between her partner and her foe. Garlic, for her part, took the initiative and began to move toward the dry spot while the poacher was speaking.

Thankfully, Shuuichi was fine, and very angry with the man. "That hurts, you ass - and there's no way I'm letting you take Butterfree," he growled, letting his anger with the poacher's underhanded trick show. "Shiro, let's teach him a lesson. It's two versus one, we have the number's advantage in this case."

"Can't say no to that," she answered, sighing in relief. "Let's give Mr. Toll what-for!"

Surprisingly, 'Mr. Toll' let out an amused (and terrible) laugh. "Very well, you like to do it the hard way, huh? Let's dance, then."

By that time, the agitated meditite had made it to the edge of the patch, ready to unleash whatever order Shiro gave her. Thankfully, the lack 9of options made sure those orders came quickly. "Slug that pokemon a couple times with a Fire Punch combo!"

Shuuichi, upon hearing Shiro's confirmation to battle, nodded in agreement, the muddy trainer doing his best to aid his fellow companion. Pointing his finger towards the poacher, Shuuichi gave his command.

"Abra, shoot forth a Hidden Power!" the trainer shouted, while maneuvering himself to join Shiro to his right. However, his eyes widened in shock when the Abra simply refused to budge, standing frozen on the dry land, the Abra's eyes likewise wide open, but rather, in fear. "Abra...?" Shuuichi muttered, the tone of confusion obvious in his tone.

Meanwhile, Garlic, having received her commands, darted towards the Ground type Pokemon, preparing to slog the Sandile with a fiery fist. However, the poacher simply smirked. Without being issued a command, the Sandile screamed, sending forth another ripple of raven black energy. Moving through the air with great speed, the sound-based assault struck the Meditite, who tumbled back from the brute force of the wave. Instead of picking herself up and continuing with her attack, Garlic simply remained seated on the floor, her expression a mixture of daze and horror.

"What was that..." Shuuichi commented, swiping his Pokedex to check the data on the Pokemon for the sake of both battlers. In response, a metallic voice beeped out.

"Sandile, the Desert Croc Pokemon. They live buried in the sands of the desert. The sun-warmed sands prevent their body temperature from dropping."

"Uh huh, not that helpful considering we're in a marshy place..." Shuuichi muttered, before continuing his rather untimely research of the poacher's Pokemon, in an attempt to gain more information about their opponent. "Woah, it's pretty well-trained, that's for sure, at least compared to Abra and Garlic... And that attack... Snarl, it seems like it has the power to instill fear in enemies. How annoying."

The poacher, rather than infuriated with the trainer's distraction, seemed more pleased. Laughing, he clapped his hands. "So have you given up yet? Com'on, there's still some time for you kids to save your own skins before things get too violent."

"Not a chance!" Shuuichi shouted in response, and seeing his Abra's recovery from the initial fear from the first Snarl the poacher used, his confidence grew. "Abra, try another Hidden Power!"

This time, the commands clicked with the Psychic, as the yellow Pokemon re-focussed his mind, little blobs of energy swirling around him in response. Forcing his palm forwards, the Abra directed the swarm of spheres of energy right at the Sandile. The Ground type scrambled to one side, attempting to avoid the attack. However, its body began to tense, as it almost drove itself out of the patch of dry land and onto the marsh. This temporary distraction allowed the attack to hit partially, sending the Sandile staggering back as it gave out a pained yelp. However, the poacher-trainer seemed rather unworried, with the Sandile recovering, shaking his head profusely before returning his focus on the Abra.

"And it's really bulky too," Shuuichi grumbled, clearly at a loss as to what to do. Suddenly, his voice dropped to a hushed whisper, barely audible for Shiro. "Shiro, any ideas or plans or strategies? This guy isn't weak at all. We gotta devise something. My Abra knows Ice Punch, but with that Snarl attack, it's gonna get real hurt and I doubt it can pull it off. Unless..."

Shuuichi bit his lips. "I have Teleport as well, but maybe..." His voice trailed off, clearly an invitation for Shiro.

With the situation looking grim and a rather disadvantageous turn of events having unfolded, not all hope was gone, as Garlic slowly picked herself up, her eyes clear and determined, the irrational fear she felt from the previous attack vanishing into the wind. She would certainly not fall easily for the same trick again. Perhaps... it is the time for a counterattack?

Unsurprisingly, the very nature of the man's attack was just as underhanded as his tactics with it, making the matchup even more disadvantageous for the young trainers. Regardless of the problems, one thing remained clear in Shiro's mind: this man was going after the thief of her mission, and thus standing in her way. For that alone, he needed to go down. Any capture rewards would simply be bonus.

"So have you given up yet?" the poacher chided them. "Com'on, there's still some time for you kids to save your own skins before things get too violent."

"Why should we give up?" she responded coldly as Shuuichi moved in with his own counterattack. "We're going to be saving more than a layers of dead flesh!"

The problem lied in just how that could be achieved. Thankfully, Shuu seemed to have an answer of sorts: the fearsome combination of teleport and ice punch. And even Shiro's anger-clouded mind could easily come up with a plan using this new information.

"I'm going to have Garlic Meditate to help her ignore the fear effects of that attack," she whispered to the dark-haired boy. "Have Abra teleport behind the 'sandile' when it attacks, regardless of who it's target is. I'll have Garlic lunge with a Fire Punch once you do, so it'll hopefully be distracted enough for you to throw your own punch safely."

Not waiting to make sure Shuu got all that, she quickly relayed the first part of Garlic's orders to the 'meditate' pokemon and hoped for the best.

Shiro is a pretty good tactician, even in such an urgent situation, thought Shuuichi as she discreetly shared her plan to the male trainer. Before he could let his thoughts stray off too far though, Shuuichi forced himself back to the reality of the intense situation. Nodding in agreement, he stood firm, keeping himself alert of his surroundings in order to find the best moment to execute the plan.

Meanwhile, the Meditite answered to her trainer's orders. Closing her eyes, she concentrated, entering a state of surreal calmness as she did what her species had a natural affinity to - Meditating. The results were fast, even faster than if other Pokemon had tried using it, as Garlic felt a surge of offensive physical power flow through her, her mind focussed and her attack rising. Seeing this, Shuuichi grinned, his morales raised while the poacher and his Sandile - was it just an imagination or was it genuine? - almost appeared worried for a split instant, before returning their cold, cruel composure.

With a nifty boost under her belt, Garlic seemed no less than eager to utilise her newfound burst of power. Working those strong, powerful legs, Garlic shot forwards right at the Sandile, trying the previous technique again. The Sandile readied its posture, repeating the same attack and certainly expecting the same result again.

A black wave shot forth from the opened mouth of the Ground type, rushing through the air at an incredible pace. Again, Garlic ate the brunt of the attack, stumbling onto the patch of land. However, something was different.

The Meditite pushed herself up from the floor, not a single glint of fear in her eyes. Her newfound concentration, the fighting type's inherent bravery and the diminished effect of an attack repeated multiple times made the irrational fear-inducing side effect of the Dark type technique ineffective this time round.

Bewildered due to the failure of the attack, the man screamed at a shrill pitch, commanding his Sandile to bite the incoming fist. It was certainly bad choice of action. As the flaming fist came close contact, the Sandile bit Garlic's fist. While it did indeed hurt the Meditite a fair bit, it was worse for Sandile, his mouth literally burning up. The poor, loyal creature continued to drive its fangs into the heated fist, hurting himself more than his opponent. Immediately, Shuuichi seized this opening.

"Now!"

In a flash of silver, the Abra vanished from the dimensions for an instant, materialising behind the Dark type Pokemon, a cyan blue energy coated around the Psychic type's fist. Swinging mercilessly at point blank, the Sandile could do little as he was sandwiched between the assault of flame and ice, one boosted with a buff, the other a super effective attack

The Sandile emitted a cry of pain as its hold on Garlic's fiery right hand finally broke. Giving his foe little time to recover, the amber yellow Psychic type Pokemon tossed a second icy fist, socking the Sandile with a follow-up super effective hit while the man screamed a flurry of commands, all of which doing little as the Sandile became so beaten that he could not react.

The Ground Type wheezed in agony, having been dealt with two hard and solid blows. The Abra was certainly quick to relieve Sandile out of its agony as a third Ice Punch was swung right at the Sandile. The latter collapsed, defeated and put out of commission.

Meditite has grew to Level 6!

"No way..." the man uttered, stunned as the events unfolded before itself his trusty companion in crime defeated.

"Now you'll remember not to mess with brats. Enjoy your time in custody!" Shuuichi said, positioning himself right in front of the man. "Do it, Abra."

A golden, psychic glow emitted off the Abra and flowed into the the cranium of the hand. Collapsing onto the floor, the man was put out of action.

"That was the Psywave attack. It should keep him from any mischief for at least half a day. I know that, experienced it before," Shuuichi smiled, while his Abra made a face that resembled one of embarrassment. "I'll grab some vines from the trees to tie him down. Those survival courses certainly come in handy now."

"Anyway, that should keep him down for awhile," Shuuichi explained. "Let's go grab those Pokemon. I certainly hope there aren't too many bad guys there. Also, you might want to heal your Meditite a bit. Here, use this."

With one toss, the trainer passed a Potion to Shiro.

The plan worked marvelously, the sandile finding itself down for the count quicker than than it could've swallowed a fish. Though that was largely because of Abra's rapid-fire punches. For pokemon with almost no muscle mass, he sure knocked the 'dile senseless. Clearly not someone you want to be on the bad side of...

While Shuuichi went to work subduing the crook as well, Shiro took a moment to rest from the scuffle and the trek through the mud. Despite her years of hard work helping out segments of Azalea's reconstruction and earning her food, the albino girl was becoming a little bit fatigued. "Man, am I glad that's over. Let's hope it stays that way."

"Anyway, that should keep him down for awhile," Shuu said as he finshed binding the unconscious fellow. "Let's go grab those Pokemon. I certainly hope there aren't too many bad guys there. Also, you might want to heal your Meditite a bit. Here, use this."

He tossed her a purple spray bottle, which Shiro caught easily. The only indication of it's use was the word 'potion' on the handle, which wasn't exactly helpful. Thankfully, Shuu already explained that this was of the healing variety.

"Garlic, can you please come over here?" Shiro called. The meditite complied, rubbing her arm where the sandile's pathetic attempts at fire-eating actually found their mark. "This shouldn't hurt," the trainer murmered as she sprayed the concoction on the wound. As if by magic, the sores on the meditite's arm healed instantly, leaving no sign that they ever existed. Sighing with relief, Garlic glomps her trainer and the two temporarily devolved into a writhing mass of giggles.

They eventually peel apart, and Shiro sets her focus on more important matters. "We should get going again. I doubt they stayed in one place this entire time!" She pauses for a second, then adds: "Let's try not to wander into the mud this time..."

Seeing Shiro relaxed on the dry patch of land and tending to her Meditite, Shuuichi could not help but smile, as he himself patted the Abra, speaking a few words of encouragement to the Psychic type for his hardwork before making another request to find the duo. The Abra nodded in response.

"We should get going again. I doubt they stayed in one place this entire time. Let's try not to wander into the mud this time..."

As Shiro trailed off, the Abra gave a rather surprising report. Still pointing in the same direction, the Abra seemed to be suggesting a shocking truth.

"You're saying that they haven't moved - at all?" Shuuichi asked, somewhat taken aback. The Abra nodded in response. "That's... odd. The man mentioned something about poaching, right? Could this mean that the Pokemon are incapacitated? And for poaching these Pokemon there really should be more than one guy around, right?"

"Anyway, let's head off. Abra, please lead the way," Shuuichi requested. The Psychic type nodded and began to lead the way, towards the same forest they had been heading to.

The trip did not take long. Thanks to the forest's less muddy surrounding terrain, they avoided the draggy, despised marsh. Soon, they found themselves upon the small cluster of mangrove trees. Contrasting the mud brown colour of their environment, a small pink item lied on the ground.

Gingerly, Shuuichi picked up the charm from the floor. It was a tad bit dirty, a few drops of mud on the charm, but nothing that can't be washed off with some warm water. Turning to face Shiro, he held the charm up for her to see.

"Is this the charm you were looking for?" Shuuichi queried. "Wait, that means they should be around here..."

Scanning his surroundings, the boy abruptly stopped.

A colour of faded yellow could be seen on the tree bark, prompting the trainer's curiosity. A good number of Pokemon remained collapsed on the ground. Certainly not harmed, but rather, they seemed asleep, with a cover of amber yellow stained on their mouths. The offending Hoppip was there, along with the Butterfree which Shuuichi had been fervently pursuing. Both asleep, both with honey stained.

"I knew that Butterfree wouldn't be doing something so noble," Shuuichi muttered, but his tone indicated his relief. Rushing to the sleeping Bug type's side, Shuuichi patted the Pokemon. "Still, where is the poacher?"

"Someone called?" a man appeared from behind. Unlike the shaggy man from previously, this one dressed smartly. He donned a blazer and wore a pair of long, black pants. Standing by his side was a giant creature, its fur snow white but it was certainly not huggable or fluffy. Just the Pokemon's presence gave a sense of misfortune and an impending disaster. It was certainly extremely well trained. Without giving time for the trainers to recover, the poacher uttered a command.

"Hyper Beam."

"Is this the charm you're looking for?" If things had been normal, Shuu's question would of relieved Shiro. But a poaching problem was certainly not 'normal', and Shiro gave a stiff nod in response. "Wait, that means they should be around here..."

It didn't take them long to find the honey-slathered tree and the mass of pokemon sleeping around it. "This... this isn't good..." Shiro muttered as her meditite chattered nervously. "I have a really bad feeling about this..."

"I knew that Butterfree wouldn't be doing something so noble," Shuuichi had already made his way to the butterfree, apparently relieved it okay. "Still, where is the poacher?"

Naturally, the world could not let that question slide. The words "Someone called?" floated their way from a much more respectable-looking man the last one, accompanied by a large, white canine with accenting dark fur. She new both pokemon fitting this description by reputation, but this on's glare made obvious that was not a furfrou- well, that and the the large blde protruding from the right side of it's head. Shiro doubted there would be a whole lot of openings to exploit, making this fight a pretty big challenge.

"Hyper Beam."

The poachers two words were a pair that caused panic in everyone who recognized them- it was one of the strongest attacks in existence. It was also known for leaving the user wide open after use, but it didn't seem like that was a regular occurrence.

But that would be an issue for somebody else. Shiro had already determined that the best way to deal with this beast was to use it's strength against it, and this attack opened up the perfect gamble. "Bide!" she called to Garlic as she attempted to scoop up the hoppip and another pokemon and run out of the way.

If the meditite survived the blast, chances are that the absol wouldn't.

"Run!" Shuuichi yelped, as he grabbed his Butterfree, along with a few other captured Pokemon, in anticipation of what was to come next. Seeing Garlic's determined stance, a red glow covering over her white body, Shuuichi's eyes widened in surprise. "You can't be thinking-"

"Add in a Roar as well," the man said, quietly yet powerfully with resonance. The red glow of the Absol condensed itself into a crimson red sphere, reeking of nothing short of destruction. As the red beam shot forward, the Absol gave a scream to go along with the incoming destruction.

The scream penetrated the atmosphere, as everyone froze. There was nothing irrational about this fear - it was the true, bloodthirsty cry of a predator, one that was ready to hunt, its voice without a single drop of mercy as it would pounce and end the life of its poor prey. Certainly, just the voice of the Pokemon showed that it had led to the demise of many Pokemon and trainers.

As a result, the Meditite's hot red aura vanished into the air, taken aback and unable to react. The group and the Meditite let open to the incoming assault, Shuuichi braced for the worst.

"Altaria, Protect," a voice called out from above, prompting Shuuichi's head to shoot skyward immediately. In front of the duo, an emerald green barrier materialised, eating the red beam and vanishing along with it. Jumping down, a trainer skillfully landed in his feet. He had black, messy hair that resembled Shuuichi's, but was more muscular and taller, and certainly older. Donning a sky blue polo T-Shirt and white shorts, which exposed his somewhat tanned body, he gave a thumbs up to the two trainers, including Shuuichi who uttered a "Kenji-nii" in shock and amazement.

"That was a special skill I trained, to use Protect in a delocalised fashion, isn't it cool?" the young man grinned - which looked eerily like Shuuichi. Turning to face the offending man, his smile vanished and his face turned dead serious. "It isn't cool to fight inexperienced trainer, ya know? Why don't we dance instead? I think I'll prove to be a more interesting foe."

"Miyano Kenji, Violet City Gym Gym Trainer," the man stated simply, unsurprised by the trainer's strength. Putting his hand into the air, he snapped his fingers. In response, four trainers appeared from between the trees, clearly his henchmen, though they seemed significantly less skilled than the big bad.

"Altaria, Heal Bell," Kenji ordered. The Altaria channeled her energy into a golden bell, which shook and emitted a pleasant sound. In response, the poached Pokemon woke up from their respective slumbers, suddenly seeing from the carnage the Hyper Beam had left on their surroundings. The Pokemon dispersed, giving shrill shrieks as they vanished into their environment. Soon, only Butterfree and Hoppip were left.

"Shuu, take control of Butterfree and Abra against the henchmen. They shouldn't be too strong. And the girl, use that Meditite and the Hoppip. I'm gonna guess the latter was wild but stayed because it probably wanted to stay around," Kenji instructed. "I'll be taking the big baddie."

The trainer cracked his knuckle. Shuuichi nodded at Shiro in agreement. It was three against five.

A Poochyena and Mawile darted towards Shiro, their fangs showing for a commanded Bite attack. They were certainly not weak Pokemon, but clearly not as trained as the smartly dressed man's Pokemon. The wild Hoppip squealed, ready to fight.

'Well, that didn't according to anyone's plans," Shiro thought as the green barrier dissipated from around them. Indeed, the thing came as a surprise to everyone. Though that wasn't what really through a hoop- rather it was the trainer who ordered it to be put up in the first place. Between the guys looks and Shuuichi's reaction, it was easy to tell the guy was Shuu's brother. (Ignoring the fact that Shuu outright said so, of course.) The older trainer definitely had an air of experience to him, one that Shuuichi definitely lacked.

"That was a special skill I trained, to use Protect in a delocalised fashion, isn't it cool?" he explained, clearly proud of this accomplishment. He then got serious, facing the poacher with the face of a serious battler. "It isn't cool to fight inexperienced trainer, ya know? Why don't we dance instead? I think I'll prove to be a more interesting foe."

Somehow, the poacher knew exactly who was dealing with now. "Miyano Kenji, Violet City Gym Gym Trainer," he stated, not showing a lot of emotion. He does snap his fingers in response, though, prompting four new trainers to exit their hiding places in the woods.

'Dang, this isn't good...' Shiro let herself think, none too happy to see their arrival. It was bad enough that the absol was so powerful, yet now it has friends. Friends full of dirty tricks like the sandile before, no doubt.

Thankfully, Kenji had an idea to make their lives easier. "Altaria, Heal Bell."

A pleasant noise reverberated across the clearing, awakening all that had been snoozing beforehand. Given the circumstances, the wild pokemon decided it was a good time to run for their lives and yell in not-so pleasant pitches. Apparently, it was too annoying a sound for anybody to take advantage of the chaos- Shiro certainly couldn't do anything with her hands on her ears.

Once the wild 'mon cleared out, all that remained were Butterfree and the hoppip... for some reason. Hopefully, it intended to help fight off the poachers. They certainly didn't need anymore trouble.

Kenji quickly split them into three groups (the most logical way), and returned his focus to the boss. For her part, shiro had to face two more pokemon she had never seen before ('this is getting ridiculous...') with the help of the hoppip. Since she had no idea what the little pink ball could do, she decided to focus her efforts on commanding Garlic alone for the time being and hope for the best.

"Garlic, assault the humanoid-looking one with a flurry of Firey Punches!" Hopefully, the meditite's Huge Power would be enough to end this quickly...

Managing to sidestep the hound's vicious Bite attack, Garlic chose to focus on the humanoid Pokemon, who seemed somewhat metallic. As the fangs drew close, Garlic swung a mean, blazing fist, right into the mouth of the human-like Pokemon. Unlike the Sandile who had the determination to clamp on, the pain withstood by the Mawile had been too great, resulting in the Pokemon recoiling backwards, while Garlic had gotten off with just a small ache on her fist.

"That's a Mawile... or so the Pokedex says. It's a steel type apparently, so that was super effective!" Shuuichi called from one side. He had successfully managed to subdue one of the henchmen and his Pokemon with Butterfree's well timed Sleep Powder and Abra's Psywave, leaving the Pokemon and its trainer unconscious in the least violent way possible, with the pressure of the battle on Shuuichi significantly reduced thanks to a 2v1 situation. At least, reduced enough for him to be researching Shiro's foe.

Meanwhile, Poochyena, having missed its mark, steadied its posture, giving a fierce glare as it readied itself to continue the assault. Thrusting itself forward for another Bite, the Meditite, who had been preparing for yet another Fire Punch for the Mawile, was left open to the incoming assault.

Hoppip took this chance.

Spinning to move between Garlic and the offending Poochyena, the aggressive dark fur beast bit the Hoppip's face in. However, this proved to be a bad move, as the grass type began to glow green, concentrating grass energy into a barrage of emerald green spheres, each the size of a coconut as they flew right into the Poochyena's throat, causing the later to be forced backward. The poor creature groaned, being forcefully fed a powerful attack, while the pink blob floated back into the air, dancing in the sun and beginning to photosynthesis, recovering vitality and health at an amazing rate.

All the while, happening simultaneously, Garlic continued its fierce assault on her opponent, socking the Mawile with a stream of heated fists, leaving the Mawile writhing in pain and unable to react to the next one after each Fire Punch. Its body charred and battered, the Mawile groaned, collapsing and unable to battle. Its trainer shrieked, attempting to flee the scene but comedically tripping over one of the many tree roots, crashing into one of the sturdy mangrove trees and left with a nasty concussion as he stumbled to the floor.

Now it was two versus one. The Hoppip squealed with this development, giving Shiro a determined expression, waiting for the female trainer to give it an order.

Happening at the same time, Shuuichi's battle was going rather smooth, the trainer having a decisive upper hand with a number advantage. His Butterfree and Abra were entangling themselves against a peculiar Pokemon, something that looked like an ice cream cone. The wintery breathes emitted from the attack were able to repel the Butterfree's powdery moves, but nevertheless did little as the duo took it into the skies and alternate dimensions respectively, skillfully maneuvering themselves away from the brunt of the attack.

On the other hand, Kenji appeared to be evenly matched with the smartly dressed big bad. With both trainers mounted on their Pokemon, the skillfullness of the Altaria in air was matched by the speed and agility of the Absol. Their attacks had left a significant toll on the mangrove forest as well, with the environment unfortunately in their lines of fire. The trees had certainly saw better days.

The second henchman, seeing that the situation was certainly not going well, ordered Poochyena to hold the group off by using Bite, as he himself scrambled backward, attempting to escape the situation. It would certainly require more than just Garlic to stop both the Poochyena and the man. Hence, what will Shiro do?

To say that things were suddenly going well would be an understatement, as both Shiro and Shuu have taken down one of their foes with ease. Though Shuu might be having a little more trouble with the ice-cream-thing, Shiro couldn't let herself believe that the mutt would be too much of an issue. Not with the hoppip helping out, anyway.

"Garlic, smack him it with a Thunder Punch, then leap back! Hoppip, use that opening to loose your own attack! Keep repeating until it goes down!" she commanded the two pokemon, certain that the plan would succeed.

She'd help Shuu afterward if he still needed it, though she doubted that he would.
