TJI Round 1: Connor vs. Charm

Welcome one and all, to beautiful Slateport Beach! I hope you all brought your swimsuits! With the sun shining its warm rays down onto the pristine white sands, this arena looks to be a suitable environment for both of our battlers! To my right, Fire GL Charm looks heated with confidence, and to my left, Ground GL Connor digs into the sand and stands his ground. This is sure to be an exciting battle, so let's get right to it then!

Let's take a look at the match stats for today:

Quote:
2 vs 2
Hidden Squad
Return = OK
96 HR DQ
Slapstick
Equilevel
Pre-Gen VI Typecharts
Route 109 - Slateport Beach (Outdoor Arena) - A sunny, warm beach on the shore of Route 109, leading right up to the edge of Slateport. The beach is rather flat and made of a shiny white sand, making visibility a little low at a distance. Off the coast, the shelf dips off significantly, becoming quite deep just off the shore. A handful of meters off the coast, there are also a number of smaller sandbanks, which are generally large enough to hold two Pokémon. Additionally, the beach is littered with large beach umbrellas and plastic beach chairs, which can be used to hide or as weapons, but they're fairly flimsy and fall apart against attacks. The banks are also littered with abandoned chairs and umbrellas.
Send me those PMs and we'll get started! (Charm to order first after the hidden round as dictated by RNG.)

Round 1: I Was Hoping for Something More Exciting

Connor and Charm take their places in the sand, surrounded by fans of both sides. This is an important match folks, and it looks like everyone is out and about to show their support! There are even sexy bikini cheerleaders! (We would've brought a couple Mareep for Connor but apparently that was deemed inappropriate by the higher-ups. No sexy sheep for you, Cibbir.) Both battlers are feeling the energy in this arena right now, and they send out their Pokemon to get things started! Two Poke Balls are tossed high into the air, and from them emerge our first Pokemon of the match. From Connor, we have the object of Dave's eternal hatred, a Starmie named Rime! And from Charm, we have Apollo the Blaziken, one of the stars of the Fire Gym who's totally named after me, right. Uh-oh, it looks like Connor's got an early type advantage. Let's take a look at their Species Characteristics and see how much that will impact this matchup!

Quote:
Starmie (Water/Psychic): Starmie do not have eyes and thus cannot be affected by moves such as Confuse Ray or Flash. However, they use their psychic senses and an excellent sense of touch to detect opponents with ease. Starmie can levitate. A Starmie's core is its most vulnerable point and they will take a bit more damage if attacked there with physical moves. As starfish, they easily recover from serious injuries and will never have to stay in a Pokémon centre for longer than one battle, unless they are placed there because their core has been damaged.
Quote:
Blaziken (Fire/Fighting): Blaziken are exceptional jumpers and can leap up to three times their head height. Kicking attacks will do slightly more damage then normal. Blaziken have flames on their wrists and can control whether their flames are ignited at any one time. However, they cannot use any fire attacks if their fire is not ignited. Igniting does not count as a move, and happens automatically when the Pokémon is ordered a fire attack. However, de-igniting counts as a move and they will automatically de-ignite if they fall asleep. Their flames can be used to burn foes if there is prolonged contact and can provide illumination. They are also familiar with the Flying type. As starter Pokémon, their Fire-type attacks are slightly more powerful when they drop below 1/4 health.
The stage is set, the trainers have given their orders, let battle commence!

Spoiler: show

Swords Dance. Bounce over an attack and strike.

Both Pokemon start things off here with some non-aggressive techniques, which is kinda disappointing because I was really hoping shit was gonna start going down everywhere from the get go. Oh well, guess not. Anyway, Rime moves to the ocean, using Double Team to create four clones of itself, which promptly follow it into the water. Meanwhile, Apollo gains the crowd's favor by performing a Swords Dance, spinning and moving and boosting his attack in a fabulous fashion. I mean I am fabulous Rime now uses the water to its advantage and sends a large Surf wave out onto the beach in an effort to drown the opposing fire chicken, but Apollo has other plans, soaring high into the air over the wave with a Bounce. Thanks to Blaziken's hilarious jumping ability, Apollo goes clean over the wave with plenty of room to spare, and he comes down in the water in an attempt to strike but all he really does is make a pretty big splash, missing Rime completely. Shame.

Both battlers went untouched and still sit at perfect health. They're both pretty even on energy as well and are fine for two.

Round 2: Change of Plans

Charm quickly realizes that this matchup is heavily disadvantageous for him, so he recalls his Blaziken for use sometime later in the match. He sends out his other Pokemon, which is revealed to be a Lanturn named Alena. Cibbir audibly expresses his distaste as the light-up fish is released in the water. Let's take a look at Lanturn's Species Characteristic and see just why Connor's cursing so much over there.

Quote:
Lanturn (Water/Electric): Lanturn are fish and thus are slow and nearly immobile on land, but are faster and more agile in the water. They fight more enthusiastically when submerged and in a sizeable body of water. Whenever a Lanturn uses an electric attack in the water, it creates a small amount of electricity around it, shocking anything in the water with it within 10 feet of it (damage is considered equal to a Thundershock for the most powerful electric attacks). They may also use their antennae as a light source in the same way that the Mareep family does with their tails.
Well this should be fun. Unfortunately, Alena can't shock the hell out of Rime just yet, since there are 4 Starmie clones along with the real Rime all in the water along with her. But wait, couldn't she just shock everything in the whole damn ocean thanks to the water everywhere? Apparently not, since instead Alena creates a massive Surf Wave from the ocean water and uses it to wash away all of Rime's clones, doing a bit of damage as well. Rime replies with some more boring defensive action, conjuring a Light Screen in preparation to soak up some special attacks, knowing that there's an impending electrical storm coming from its foe. And come it does, as Alena releases a Discharge of pent-up electrical energy, which all goes harmlessly into the conveniently created Light Screen. What a shame. At least Rime does take some damage from the fact that Alena just used an electric attack in water and there's plenty of extra electricity to go around. A bit irked by this, Rime makes sure its foe won't be doing of that anytime soon, flashing Alena with a Confuse Ray and leaving her more confused than a chameleon in a skittle factory. Hey at least damage happened this round.

Rime has taken some damage, while Alena sits at perfect health, now in possession of a lead. Both Pokemon are good on energy right now, with Alena having a slight lead there since she was sent out just this round. Rime is 1/3 out of Ghost.

Return for now, Rime. In an unexpected turn of events.

Giga Drain her while he remains confused. Proceed to set up a Quick Charge Substitute, but should that fail, show her your Seed Bomb.

Let's play ball, Charm.

Oh okay.

Charm has been DQ'ed, Connor is the winner!

I get 1 SP for doing not much at all

Shame this didn't finish, it seemed like it was gonna turn out to be a pretty cool match. Good luck in the rest of the tournament, Connor (if this ever actually finishes lol)
