Keeping them on the site (where they'll be less visible but still accessible for people who want them) vs. keeping them in a thread (where they'll be plenty visible) seems like a silly argument.

Only if you accept that the site is not worth using and should be abandoned.

Why exactly do we need an arena archive in the first place? Seems unnecessary.

I don't want to just delete all the old arenas. It'd be nice to have them for reference or if people want to use a crazier arena.

This project was intended to give us a better set of default arenas, not erase the old ones completely.

Well there is a difference between keeping the Custom arenas (which I think we are already doing?) and keeping the old Lawn arena. We obviously don't need the latter.

Put them in an archive thread away from the official site. Easy.

I really don't think we should just purge them like that, to be honest. Sure, some of them are complete and total crack but many are pretty reasonable and help break the mould away from the generic default arenas we're revamping.

Honestly, I think it'd be best to only have the standard arenas on the site. It keeps it simple for new people, and it gives the league a list of standard arenas for use in normal battle without having some sort of massive, overwhelming list of poorly made arenas with one or two gems on site. For these, I think a thread would be best. Basically, a revamp of the arena creation thread, but assign someone to manage the OP with any good arenas submitted into it. This would supply a list of more fun arenas without crowding the page for basic arenas, and it will also give us an easily updatable list of more advanced arenas instead of a static, poorly organized, overcrowded page on the official site. If we could find someone to actually keep the new thread up to date.

Three Categories. Standard Arenas. Non-Standard/Advanced Arenas. Arena Archive.

First category is the simple shit like in this post. Lawn, Pummelo, that sorta thing. Non-Standard/Advanced Arenas are mostly our user-created ones that have a bit more flair to them or something, like Crackosseum, Super Crack Galaxy, Snakes on a Plane, Yawn Arena, Shifting Stadium, and anything else. Arena Archive is for Old Gym Arenas, Old Tournament Arenas, Legend Match Arenas, etc. The current versions of arenas can be split between these pages as seen fit. Like we have a simplified Mall Arena in Standard Arenas, and then the older/non-simplified Mall Arena is in Non-Standard Arenas, and then Donnybrook Shopping Mall in Arena Archive.

Okay, so as it stands, the following will (probably) be posted come Tuesday.
  • Arena description for arena benefiting Ice types, as well as possible arenas for other types.
  • Urban arenas (plans for a Plaza, a modified Mall, further suggestions welcome)
  • Removal of River, replaced permanently with the Creek arena.
  • Tidying of descriptions in general.
  • Removal of the gravestone mechanic from Graveyard (?)
As for the way we're going to handle archiving and the actual registry of these arenas, I'll probably talk with Jeri more on what would be easiest, but the suggestions are definitely welcome and will be taken on board. Thank you for your assistance!

So I take it dunking things into the lava is still going to be silly? Or is that going under "tidying in general"?

The mechanic for arena enthusiasm, will that be left up to the referee?

Ummmmm, pretty sure there was an announcement talking about how enthusiasm works and that its ref's discretion.

Factory arena seems like another cool arena idea for an Urban idea. Lack of natural light plus other fun factory mechanics could differentiate it from other urban arenas

>Urban arenas
Bring back Playground, it's easily one of the most fun and with a little bit of touchup would be excellent.

>Possible other types
A good Ice arena would probably be the one that was used in the Johto League, I believe, where there was a Ponyta that was slipping all over it.
Would recommend bringing back and redoing the Swamp, which was a good Poison based arena.
Other than that the only things that don't really have things that they can fit under are going to be Dragon and Psychic, though Dragon debatably benefits from a couple. Would recommend bringing back the Zen Garden and reworking the stupid boost system it had to make something for Psychics.

>Factory
The problem here is going to be the inevitable "People are going to try smashing Pokemon in machines" so that's probably not the best call.

I am totally in support of the playground arena since that is easily one of my favorite simple arenas.

Explain because I'm not quite sure what this means

OKay let's go with mostly nonfunctional/inoperatable machines then because that was not something that first came to mind

If that was the case there'd be no reason for any lighting to be on. It'd also probably be in disrepair which means cooling oil all over the floor and broken things everywhere. No matter how you do a factory it's going to be a killing zone and that's not what we want in a standard arena.

I know enthusiam is up to referee's discretion, but can the arena descriptions either exclude the mention to leave it as an implicit attribute or can we get all of the arenas to mention it explicitly? When I asked at the beginning I only skimmed over. The issue really comes down for new referees, the older bunch can grasp it fine. I feel that anything that can help a new referee do the job easier is a plus at any level. If we go the explicit route for the sake of newer referees, also leave it open ended that even if the type is not mentioned directly, a referee can discretely decide to be inclusive of that pokemon.

Some proposed arena descriptions do have some that mention enthusiasm or weariness and the others don't.
Spoiler: show

River: A somewhat more complex arena, the main aspect of this arena is the large River running through the center. The water is deep enough to accommodate most, and the width of the river is such that most Pokemon will be unable to cross it within a single round. The waters run fast, meaning only Water types and those who excel at swimming will feel comfortable being in the water. The banks of the river feature soft ground, offering a sturdy foothold for the less aquatically inclined, and further beyond that is the fringes of a forest. Though the battling can sometimes spill into these trees, the Pokemon will find themselves unable to go too far, the trees being too densely packed to continue deeper.

--

Greenhouse: A large metal and glass construct, typically in the shape of a dome. The Greenhouse envelops a large, indoors forest, with all manners of foliage imaginable. Most notably, numerous trees are interspersed throughout the surroundings. The ground underfoot is made simply of soil, and is easily manipulated. Sunlight coming from outside will be amplified by the glass, making moves such as Synthesis more efficient and allowing Solar Beam a quicker charge time. Grass Pokemon will feel much more comfortable in these surroundings than any other Pokemon.

--

Desert: The Desert arena is situated amidst huge sand dunes. The elevated sand will provide unstable footing at best for those unsuited to navigating the arena, and the intense heat will render Water and Ice type Pokemon uncomfortable, while the arid conditions will leave Grass type Pokemon unfamiliar with the environment uncomfortable. Beneath the surface of the sand are numerous large rock suitable for use in attacks like Stealth Rock, and there are likewise boulders jutting from the surface of the dunes which can provide cover for smaller Pokemon and be used to fuel attacks such as Rock Slide. Within reason, if one of the batters mentions positioning of an arena aspect, the battler is considered to be correct unless it contradicts a previous statement.

--

tl;dr: Enthusiasm is either implicit by ref's discretion or an explicit mention of what types feel more comfortable for the sake of consistency.
