Lake North Pole - The North Pole is, of course, an extremely chilly place. Winter (January) temperatures at the North Pole can range from about −43 °C (−45 °F) to −26 °C (−15 °F), perhaps averaging around −34 °C (−29 °F). Summer temperatures (June, July and August) average around the freezing point (0 °C (32 °F)). These temperatures prohibit almost all plantlife from growing, and as such grass types will find themselves extremely uncomfortable. Ice types, on the other hand, will be very at home with the snowy surroundings. The battle itself will take place on Lake North Pole. While the lake isn't completely frozen thanks to a well-placed river inlet and outlet, chunks of ice litter the 100-square-yard lake, serving as pontoons of sorts in the arena. They're thick enough to hold about 158 kg (350 Lbs) before they start to crack. Being ice, however, they are slippery, and Pokemon not suited for traction may have difficulty finding footing. The water itself contains an interesting, magical property of sorts, perhaps in part to the magic flowing from Santa's Workshop, mere miles north. While many would expect the water to be freezing cold, it is actually strangely heated while still leaving the ice sheets atop the surface intact. Thanks to the incredible cold, rain dance will summon snow and sunny day, while bringing the sun, will fail to increase the temperature by more than 3-5 degrees.

We're now watching a match between two eminent Trainers. Kingothestone, a prospective Gym Trainer, has decided to challenge Son_of_Shadows, the Youngest Picnicker in the League, to a scenario match presumably to practice with some Water/Ice dual-types. B+ Referee, here at your service. Although I can make no guarantees, I will try to minimise the amount of Frozen jokes as much as possible. Battle stations, allons-y!

So we're all clear on the rules:
- This match is a Singles match. Both trainers may use only one Pokemon at a time.
- Both trainers submit a squad of 6 Pokemon and only 4 will be used in this match. A trainer loses when all 4 of their Pokemon are KO'd.
- For the purposes of this match, all Pokemon will be considered to be Level 4, with the exception of Uplevels.
- Switching out will not be considered a KO and is allowed for this match.

The Gym arena chosen for this match is the Lake North Pole:

Kots, squad up with your Ice gang. I'll be reffing standard 6/9 and the new energy scale from Kush (I.e. two Blizzards worth for Fauxmilliarity, 2HB for Familiarity)

Over a snowy hill to the north, a figure appears. A single man, sporting a black baseball cap emblazoned with a scarlet R, a pair of worn blue jeans, and nothing but a black, short-sleeve polo shirt. Gripping a wooden baseball bat in his left hand and using it as a walking stick of sorts, he seems quite at home in the frigid temperatures. He comes to a halt at the edge of the lake, adjusting his cap with his right hand before letting it drop to the six Pokeballs on his waist.

"Let us begin"

---------------------------

Poseidon

[Male Tentacruel]
[Biography]
Poseidon was traveling through the ocean between Cinnabar Island and the Seafoam Islands when he accidentally swam into a highly toxic waste spill. He managed to escape the poisonous fluid, but not before a substantial amount of the liquid seeped into his system. While it did have some other effects, the most noticeable is that his coloration has changed. the majority of his body is now pitch black, and the crystals on either side of his head, once red, now shimmer a fluorescent blue. Poseidon was always a loner, but after his incident, he developed a severe hatred for all aquatic creatures. It doesn't help his strength at all, he just doesn't like them and wouldn't care less if they were to all just disappear.

Tentacruel (Water/Poison): Tentacruel have ten tentacles. While they are good swimmers, they can move on land. They do this by slithering across the ground on a mess of tentacles and can use some of their others for other actions simultaneously. If a Pokémon makes contact with Tentacruel's tentacles for more than five seconds they have a 10% chance of being poisoned. They can see in the dark. They fight more enthusiastically when submerged and in a sizable body of water.
[Water]: Water-type Pokémon are generally able to hold their breath and/or breathe underwater. The time varies, from several rounds in the case of birds, mammals and reptiles to indefinitely for fish and squid like Pokémon. They are generally good swimmers and are better at manipulating Water for moves like Surf and Whirlpool than other Pokémon. They have slightly more Ice-typed energy than other Pokémon if they naturally learn attacks of that type.
[Poison]: Poison-type Pokémon are highly resistant to poisoning. Their Poison-type attacks are slightly more likely to succeed in poisoning their targets than those used by other Pokémon and the effects will be slightly more potent. They also have an additional 5% chance to poison the target when using physical attacks with their most venomous appendages e.g. a Seviper’s tail, a Nidoking’s horn.

[Hidden Power]
Electric

[Special Training: Toxic Overflow]
Poseidon's misadventure into the toxic waste spill has given his Poison attacks a boost, now doing 10% more damage while using 10% more energy.
---------------------------

Ceto

[Female Lapras]
[Biography]
TBA

Lapras (Water/Ice): Lapras are slow and ungainly on land, but are incredibly fast and agile in water, particularly on the surface. As carrier Pokémon, Lapras can carry up to 1.5 times their weight and not have their speed affected. Lapras' shell are hard, and any attacks there are reduced to 75% damage. They can see in the dark.
[Ice]: Ice-type Pokémon are highly resistant to cold fight more enthusiastically in cold environments. However, they hate hot temperatures, and will not fight as enthusiastically. Ice-type attacks which have a secondary effect such as Icy Wind and Ice Beam are slightly more likely to have their effects triggered when used by Ice-type Pokémon, though they are often resistant to such effects themselves. Ice-types are generally sure footed and difficult to knock over. They tend to have slightly more Water energy than other Pokémon if they naturally learn attacks of that type.

[Hidden Power]
Water

---------------------------

Phorcys

[Male Poliwrath]
[Biography]
TBA

Poliwrath (Water/Fighting): Poliwrath are the best and fastest swimmers of all the Poliwag family, but are just as adept on land as they are in the water. They secrete a sort of slime when out of the water, which makes them more slippery and harder to grab.
[Fighting]: Fighting-type Pokémon train extensively, more than any other Pokémon type, which gives them greater endurance and readiness than other Pokémon and allows them to push themselves harder for longer. They are more accurate with their physical blows and are more adept at blocking and countering the physical strikes of attackers. They fight more enthusiastically in urban environments but are not adversely affected by more natural surroundings.

[Hidden Power]
Fighting

---------------------------

Scylla

[Female Gyarados]
[Biography]
Scylla is a truly vicious individual, and she takes pride in this fact. For her, a match is not successful if she has not properly roared at least three times and scared the living daylights out of her foe(s). She decided, however, that the ability to simply scare her foes was not nearly enough. She wanted to put the fear of god in them, much like the fear sailors felt when they encountered her ancient Greek namesake. This being the case, I sent her to train with Connor and his own Gyarados, Destroy. They worked with her, teaching her their ways and helping her to perfect her own special technique.

Gyarados (Water/Flying): Gyarados are terrifying and their fear based attacks are much more effective than normal. Gyarados are equally at home on land or in the water. They are not particularly agile in either medium despite their Flying typing, however. They can see in the dark.
[Flying]: Flying-type Pokémon are faster and more agile in their chosen mode of transportation than other Pokémon. Because of their skill in controlling their movement, they are more difficult to evade when using physical moves and more likely to succeed in dodging attacks. Flying type Pokémon are affected normally by the damaging effects of Ground-typed energy and take neutral damage from Ground type moves in the ASB. They fight more enthusiastically in spacious arenas but are not put off by cramped conditions.

[Hidden Power]
Ground

Hidden Power: Fairy

---------------------------

Glaucus

[Male Lanturn]
[Biography]
TBA

Lanturn (Water/Electric): Lanturn are fish and thus are slow and nearly immobile on land, but are faster and more agile in the water. They fight more enthusiastically when submerged and in a sizeable body of water. Whenever a Lanturn uses an electric attack in the water, it creates a small amount of electricity around it, shocking anything in the water with it within 10 feet of it (damage is considered equal to a Thundershock for the most powerful electric attacks). They may also use their antennae as a light source in the same way that the Mareep family does with their tails.
[Electric]: Electric-types, in general, prefer areas where their electric attacks are most accurate. Thus, while hot temperatures don't bother them, the fact that heat refracts electricity doesn't appeal to them. They are resistant to paralysis inflicted by Electric-type moves, though they may be paralysed as normal by other methods. Electric types do not suffer from recoil damage when using Electric attacks in the water.

[Hidden Power]
Water

---------------------------

Asteria

[Genderless Starmie]
[Biography]
TBA

Starmie (Water/Psychic): Starmie do not have eyes and thus cannot be affected by moves such as Confuse Ray or Flash. However, they use their psychic senses and an excellent sense of touch to detect opponents with ease. Starmie can levitate. A Starmie's core is its most vulnerable point and they will take a bit more damage if attacked there with physical moves. As starfish, they easily recover from serious injuries and will never have to stay in a Pokémon centre for longer than one battle, unless they are placed there because their core has been damaged.
[Psychic]: Psychic-type Pokémon are much more proficient with telekinesis than other Pokémon. Thus, they can use Psychic to move and manipulate targets with ease. Psychic type Pokémon are resistant to flinching and have higher levels of focus and concentration than other Pokémon. They have limited ability to read minds and are thus more adept at dodging attacks than might be expected and able to mitigate the effects of accuracy reducing attacks. This telepathy does not work on Dark typed Pokémon.

kots wtf

Oh good, a full squad of Waters. My favourite type to fight with my squad. Yeesh. Sudden rush of regret. Oh well, let's ride. Equiall 4 does lots of sexy things for my squad after all! OBSERVE!

Starmie, "Gem" (N), level 4
Biography: TBC
Signature: TBC
Hidden Power: Ground

Abomasnow, "Yeti" (M), level [email protected]
Biography: TBC
Signature: TBC
Hidden Power: Ground

Noctowl, "Bishop, (M), level 4
Biography: Bishop lived in a monastery with a religious order, dedicated to the banishing of evil from the world, represented to them by the Dark and Ghost type in Pokémon. Known as the Holy Shine Order, they conducted regular hunts in the woods and trained Pokémon capable of battling these types. For his natural ability with Foresight and night vision due to being an owl, Bishop was one of the Order's most deadly weapons. However, the Order would soon make enemies of trainers and Pokémon everywhere, leading to the razing of the monastery. Most Order members fled, or were killed in a single night, but one Pokémon was left behind - Bishop, whose cries haunted the empty, ruined halls. Had he not been found by a passing SoS, he would have starved to death, and now travels alongside him, hoping to find information as to the whereabouts of surviving Order members and carrying on their legacy.
Signature: Special Training - Slayer
As part of his training with the Holy Shine Order, Bishop's STAB attacks now do 20% extra damage to Dark and Ghost types, though this does not stack on Pokémon with both of these types (ie Sableye and Spiritomb would still just take 20% more damage, rather than 40%). As a consequence, Bishop has lost access to Night Shade, Shadow Ball, Feint Attack, Thief, Nightmare and Curse, as these unholy techniques do not befit the Order.
Hidden Power: Ground

Mr. Mime, "Theatric", (M), level 4
Biography: On his travels, SoS took up street performing, as a clever way to make money on the side. As much as he got mugged, he had fun doing it and managed to pick up a small following from doing magic tricks, singing, dancing and reciting dramatic monologues. Part of this following included a small Mime Jr. with a love of drama, who became enthralled by SoS' performance skills, and decided to learn how to perform himself. Alongside Chanteuse, Theatric took to performing with his trainer and quickly eclipsed him as an excellent dancer with captivating performances.
SIgnature: Special Training - Dance Battler
Because of his dancing talents, Theatric now has access to Swords and Quiver Dance. In addition, his performance moves can enthrall the opponent and make them pause, due to their captivating nature. Performance moves include Swords Dance, Quiver Dance, Role Play, Trick, Mimic, Copycat, Encore and Teeter Dance.
Hidden Power: Fairy

Blastoise, "The O.G.", (M), level 4
Biography: TBC
Signature: TBC
Hidden Power: TBC

Volbeat, "Reid" (M), level 4
Biography: TBC

Hidden Power: Ground

Maaaaaaaaan, I need to hit TL4 more than Red does. Oh well, Reid, front and centre!

As I was squadding I had the horrible realization that the Ludicolo sig that I have planned is not, in fact, a thing quite yet, and because of that Ludicolo is hurt by the extreme cold of the arena. It made me very sad. Heartbreaking, even.

Orders and such when I get home from work.

Glaucus, lock and load. Released underwater.

Begin with a surf wave, not riding it. If that manages to put Reid in the water, immediately blast him with a confuse ray. If not, another wave of surf, remaining as deep underwater and as evasive as possible as you do so.

Oh hey, the Lanturn, couldn't possibly have seen this one coming.

Burst Agility to the top of your flight ceiling, above the waves before you hit him with a Confuse Ray.

ROUND 1: Ray of Light

Had a TA for the past few days since spending time with family over Christmas! kots, if you could hold off orders until maybe January 2, I'd appreciate it.

ROUND 1: Ray of Light
Lanturn vs Volbeat

Welcome to the Lake North Pole Arena. A fantastical environment, wintry winds whisper of wonderment, wandering and whirling. The lake remains frozen, with fingers of hoarfrost brushing the opaque tops of the ice slabs. Glimmering under the limp sunlight, the snow coats the entire arena. A biting cold muffles the refreshing scent of pine-needles, while sleet coats the balding pebbles which dot the edges of the lake. Even from underneath the frozen surfaces, one could perceive tranquil waters, which eddy like an electric current. As distant caws of migrating Pokémon echo like daybreak’s bell, two Trainers tread through the rime-tipped trees. Shivering, the Trainers pull their parkas over them in an effort to keep warm. Their teeth chatter, while the frigid environment numbs them and renders them insensate. The Trainers know that this frozen lake will become an abode of battle, at least very soon. Their hands flit to their PokéBalls.

The Referee, a young man swaddled in a large snowsuit, speaks aloud:

"We now begin a Water Scenario match between kots and Son_of_Shadows," he says, tapping numbers into his Pokédex. "Here is the data on their chosen Pokémon."

Volbeat (Bug): Volbeat and Illumise are considered male and female variations of the same Pokémon, and therefore the Attracts of both species are considered to work as if both Volbeat and Illumise were the same species of Pokémon. Volbeat have a light on their tail that they can use to illuminate areas, though they make them more visible in the dark. Volbeat are familiar with the Electric type.
[Bug]: Bug-types can see in the dark. Most live in warm climates, though they hate fire and dislike extreme cold. Their status inducing attacks have a slight boost to their chance of inflicting statuses and the resulting statuses are slightly more potent than usual.
The Referee says loudly, "And let's begin in three... two... one. Release!"

From the red lights of PokéBalls converge a fluttering firefly from the Volbeat line called Reid and a bright, iridescent anglerfish named Glaucus from Lanturn species, who emanates electric enthusiasm. Initially, the two creatures keep their distance. After a second, Glaucus thrusts forward and varnishes himself in a cascade of aquatic power. Surfing inside the frigid lake, Glaucus summons a large wall of water, which roars and roils. Reid is not one to simply idle, however. Indeed, Reid soars into the sky like a rocket before Glaucus can squeak. When the deluge surges towards Reid, the Volbeat leaps over Glaucus’s attack. Zipping upwards, Reid somersaults to safety in a snap of Agility. The tsunami fails to reach Reid, who sighs with palpable relief. While he flutters his wings, Glaucus scowls as though he has been slapped in the face. This turn of events will not do. Time to turn the actual tables, because Glaucus refuses to allow indignities slide.

Glaucus whirls under the pontoons of ice, as he segues into a second technique. Once again, the wintry waters eddy into a whirlpool, which coalesces in front of Glaucus. Swivelling, Glaucus crafts a tsunami that Surfs and shoots towards Reid. This time, something different occurs. Since the Volbeat species is not noted in the Species Characteristics to be a flier, not to mention a strong one, Reid does not get particularly far into the crisp air. Unprepared, Reid opens his eyes in shock when the great wave crashes into him like a freighter. While Reid’s garbled screams rend the arena, the referee is reminded of rusty shears cleaving a seam of silk. Indeed, the cries of agony almost engulf the Lake, which reverberates from the din.

After he takes a deep breath to steady himself, Reid stabilizes his flight and glowers at his opponent. Anger rails him, shrieking like a banshee. Determined to exact vengeance, the Volbeat hones onto Glaucus. Despite the depths between them, Reid locates Glaucus who has not gotten too far away from the Volbeat. Channeling his ghostly energies, Reid coats himself in a faint sheen of silver. His irises glimmer like gemstones, when he hurtles a Ray of limpid light into the lake. The kaleidoscopic beam ricochets, lancing the unsuspecting Lanturn. A shroud of Confusion envelops Glaucus, who blathers in the face of hallucinatory bears prancing across his vision. Drool pools from his lips, and he blathers, eyes glazed over.

Both battlers have spent noteworthy energies, with Reid expending a great fraction of ghost energy Neither require breaks yet, though.

Only Reid took some damage in this round.

-Son_of_Shadows to order.

Talked with the LOs about flight ceilings and shtuff, turns out both Surfs would've ended up missing. This puts Reid still at his flight ceiling, energy use the same for both, and no damage to either. Glaucus is still confused. SoS to order.

Let's play a game of Hot and Cold. Hose the bug down with a scald, then transition into an immediate ice beam while he's sopping wet. Aim for the wings if you can. Let's hinder the flight a bit.

Reid does a quick spin in the air as he lets out a happy cry, content with having avoided his aquatic adversary's assault. The Volbeat's tail begins to glow, but his light producing opponent below knows that this is no mere source of luminescence as Reid shines with a red aura briefly, before it gathers inside his form. Sensing the power boost that his winged enemy has obtained, Glaucus knows he must act fast, and quickly supercharges the water nearest to him with electricity so as to send the lukewarm aqua into a frothy boil. Capturing some in his mouth, he rises above the surface and fires the scalding hot liquid in a thin stream to douse the Volbeat above, who descends slightly as his focus switches from flying to "OH LORD IT BURNS" within a matter of milliseconds. Fortunately for Reid, he is left with no lasting damage, but still peeved with his fishy foe, he buzzes his displeasure to the frozen surroundings. This tinny whine that only a bug could make also turns out to be more dangerous than it appears, as a powerful blast of red sound waves travel in a focused group straight into the angler, who is quite rattled by the blast of noise. His lures flash in anger, and rising to the surface once more, Glaucus imitates the frigid surroundings as he sends a crackling beam of ice splintering through the air to smash into his soggy opponent. The ice latches hold to Reid, freezing the already present water, and thus bogging down his lower half as the layers of frost increase. Shaking himself free of this attempt at a freezing tomb, his lower half retains its cold numbness due to his cold blooded body screaming at him to find some warmth.

Glaucus has established a small health lead and is beginning to tire, though can still go for two if necessary. Ice has enough for another beam. Reid will also be good for two, is still under the effects of his powerful boost, and is also quite chilly. Kots to order.

While the bug deals with the cold, give him a supersonic. If he's confused, let him flounder, but if not, shoot him a water pulse and pray for some confusion by way or rng

I find it very odd that I was so easily frozen after being hit with boiling water, and thus, super warmed up, but whatever I suppose.

Remain airborne and move back as you charge a Zen Headbutt, but don't attack; simply using the attack to clear any confusion that results from Supersonic. Then launch another focused Bug Buzz.

Hovering in the air and bobbing about in an attempt to warm up slightly, Reid shivers in quiet anticipation of his opponent's next assault. It happens suddenly, with Glaucus breaking the surface of the water to let loose a high pitched, supersonic whine of the most irritating sound, which leaves Reid dazed. However, a calm, zen-like aura washes over the flying bug, relieving his mind of the recently acquired confusion, leaving him happily bouncing in the air. As the Volbeat begins to buzz once more, Glaucus realizes some part of his plan has gone terribly wrong, and shoots a pulse of water upwards just as the wave of red bug sound comes flowing downward. Both attacks impact their respective targets, but neither leave any sort of aftereffect. The Lanturn swishes his tail through the water in displeasure as he glares at the firefly above him, who rights himself in the air and shakes off some of the moisture.

Glaucus still holds a lead, and both are still in their first third of health. Glaucus still wouldn't mind a break, but did appreciate the lower energy use. Reid, on the other hand, is beginning to tire and would like a break as well. Psychic has plenty. SoS to order.

Close your eyes through the ray and then strike with another scald.

Reid's tail once again begins to glow, reflecting brightly off of the ice. But this ray of light is not meant to boost his own battling prowess this time, as he turns about and it emits an extremely bright flash in an attempt to confuse the Lanturn below. Glaucus remains blissfully aware, however, as he simply closed his eyes and waited out the attack. A happy burble escaping his fishy lips, he supercharges the water once more and launches a stream of scalding hot water to douse the Volbeat. Again, the heated liquid stings painfully, but leaves no lasting burns.

Reid has dropped out of his first third of health, but should be good for two. Glaucus should be good for two as well. Ghost for Reid still has enough for another confuse ray. Kots to order.

Start with a thunder wave. If you lock him up, follow with a supersonic, elsewise strike with a water pulse

I will never be ok with the whole closing your eyes thing, it's so incredibly dumb.

Protect yourself with a QC Substitute and return fire with a Solarbeam.

Glaucus surfaces briefly once more, his lure glowing as a tendril of electricity creeps forward in a flat wave, seeking to bind his opponent up and constrict the bug. And from the perspective of the Laturn, it does...sort of. However, as the chain of thunderbolts traveled, Reid secretly made a quickly-charged substitute, which for all intents and purposes appeared to be him, but of course wasn't. As the binding wave doesn't really do its job, the mental block on the Lanturn really kicks in, forcing him to believe the substitute is real despite what he just witnessed. It's not enough to suppress what he subconsciously knows however, and proceeding on as if the attack had failed, Glaucus sends a sphere of water to pulse through the air, which ruptures against the fake likeness of the Volbeat, which vanishes. Reid is revealed a small ways off, glowing with solar power as he launches an incredibly powerful beam (take that fossil fuels!!1!), sending Glaucus reeling as he descends slightly in the water.

Paradoxes aside, Reid literally has the smallest of leads imaginable in both health and energy. Both should be good for two however. Grass has enough for another beam left. SoS to order.

And they told me bringing Volbeat to fight water GTs was a bad idea. Eat it.

Toxic, wider Bug Buzz.

Now watch as it all goes horribly awry.
