But not all surprises are good! Many times, I've bought a 6 squad purchase, and one week later, a magical advance sale about which only LOs and maybe some of their friends are aware. And this has happened to other people before. Yes, one could make an argument that we can reasonably predict to stock up on SP before major holidays, but actual notice would be nice ^____^;;

The "surprise" element can be what exactly is on sale (squad slots, levels on Pokemon, Type-Enhancing Tokens, Holiday Tokens, etc.) However, actual dates would be nice, so we don't have guessing games anymore. If we can get 100% refunds, then that would be okay, but with the current refund policy, I'd prefer more concrete dates/advance notice.

On the flip side, why do we even have scarves in the first place. Providing a 'boost' of any sort kinda defeats the entire point of contests.
On the flip flip side, wouldn't scarves be completely obscure and useless since contests aren't a thing actively?

The scarves are mostly a joke about how ASB should never do contests ever again.

Thiiiis. Sometimes people might have to leave during these Holidays or just end up not having internet access at a certain point in time.

With advanced notice that "Something Cool is coming to the Shop!", you can let people know when it'll be available without ruining the surprise of what it is.

Advance notice of sales, sure, but that forgets the crux of the issue. Should there be sales? Should there not be sales?

I think the incentive of sales is a good thing. It doesn't quite ensure a sustainable period of refereeing throughout the year, but that's not really the purpose of sales. I think ASB without sales would be worse off.

Frankly, I think communication in general is a problem in the ASB right now. I literally never know what's going on, and end up getting screwed over because of it. Sales are cool and all (although Ive never participated in one, not having SP myself), but I completely agree that letting us know what's coming up and what's going to happen is equally as important.

I don't think it should stretch to knowing what will be on sale. That panders the community way too much and frankly removing any kind of surprise element from sales would make them much less fun. Knowing when is really only as far as it needs to go, if anything.

Yeah, frankly knowing a sale is coming up is going to cause people to really churn out reffings in hopes of having a stockpile of SP to spend, but if you tell them exactly what the sale contains, they might not be overly interested and it won't achieve said effect.

I think that is a good approach; we were planning on making sales a regular thing and possibly having some temporary items be monthly rotators.

I don't know, I realize that it may suck if you just blew your load right before a big sale but doesn't the thought that there may be a sale to exploit in the near yet undetermined future give an incentive for refs to be consistently active?

Yeah but they have sales on some holidays and skip others so the point still stands to some degree.

I think boosted SP events are more of an incentive than sales honestly, as they encourage refs to ref as quickly as possible and maximize profit. Sales are cool but being offered 1.5 or 2x SP is more of an incentive for me.

Will ardently agree with the idea of bonus SP events. Even when localised to Serebii, they're a massive incentive for referees to actually put a little more effort in.

Personally I find that the idea of forcing them to be on SPPf should only be for when we have a slow influx of newbies (which isn't the case at this exact moment) and that the type of SP events that give bonuses for reffing matches involving newbies are typically better. Partially because it's going to largely be on SPPf anyway, and because it helps to keep the recent waves of newbies interested due to quicker reffings.

Gonna put it out there that putting incentives out there for newbies to do stuff on UPN is just as important as getting old fogies to treat Serebii like it's a thing. Serebii is where we get our new blood, but UPN is where we get the retention. The league doesn't just grow by getting twenty new TL1s, it grows by getting five of those TL1s to TL4.

Ok so we're talking about SP events and possible locations. What should they look like, where should they be, when should they be?

Personally I'm always going to favour pushing people to Serebii because frankly if you're on UPN and posting you're going to stay or you aren't. UPN's retention rate is not based upon the speed and quality of the reffings you get.

Hold a reffing contest where the highest quality Serebii reffings get an SP prize. Then, rig the contest so that only matches involving people who are TL1 or TL2 win.

...I don't have to explain why that's a terrible idea do I?

Oh, you think that was terrible? You underestimate my power!

1. Triple SP Wednesdays. If the match begins or ends on a Wednesday, the ref gets triple the SP.
2. Event where TP and SP gains are reversed, so battling earns you SP and reffing earns you TP.
3. Temporary 1:1 conversion between SP and TP.
4. Free token based on how many letters you have in your username.
5. Matches that are mono-Grass vs. mono-Grass earn .25 bonus SP for every combatant that fights in the match.
6. Event where 1 SP will purchase any single given thing in the shop (not including packages of slots/whatever else is obviously stupid and abusable)

Yeah, see, Shuckle, those ideas are all certifiably terrible, being completely honest. They discourage reffing, which is NOT the idea. The first one, for example, just means that reffing activity on days other than Wednesdays is going to hilariously drop. And the 3x bonus is way to high for such an easily abusable condition (once per 48hrs, a much more productive option, is only 2x). Something you have to ask yourself is "Would this change benefit the productivity and activity of the PASBL". Although the discount sale idea (6) has some merit it's, well, already a thing. *gestures to half-price sales*

I can explicitly explain why the others are terrible ideas, if you want, but there would be a lot of repeating.
