Lucario Two Goals One Cup (Football thread)

With the English domestic seasons just getting underway I thought I'd recreate the moderate success of the World Cup thread I ran over on Serebii and create a Football thread!

Discuss the goings on in your chosen domestic league, talk about international fixtures and the game in other countries to your own, complain about how awful your team is this week, revel in the unadulterated joy that is Thierry Henry sassing people.

If people are interested we'll set up some predictions brackets and maybe have some good natured betting going on, with forfeits surrounding particular avatar themes and signatures being the max bet allowed.

Fixtures lists:

Rules and Guidelines:

1) Please use spoiler tags when talking about results for a week or so after a given match. It's a football thread so spoilers are to be expected but a little effort can go a long way.
2) Please try not to let us get in to a run of "my team is the best" "no mine is" "mine is the best". It gets old after a while.
3) The thread is about football, also known as soccer by some people, not American Football, Gaelic Football or any other game. If you want to talk about other sports or side games for an extended period, please do it somewhere else, such as in our already existing Fantasy Football or Rugby threads.
4) No Norwich fans*

Let's have some fun! to start I've put the beeb's fixtures table up there, it covers the English and Scottish leagues among other things. If people want particular things putting in to the OP for ease of reference let me know. Let's try and talk about women's football too, it'd be nice to encourage equality in our own small way.

*Ok you can come in but don't touch anything.

First post to celebrate the glorious future victory of Arsenal and Ipswich Town. We shall destroy all comers.

What teams are other people supporting?

Arsenal seem geared up to really actually front some sort of ... 'challenge', this year. I mean sure, they're going to flaunt it early season and then fuck up, scrape fourth later, but hey, that's Arsenal.

All hail the almighty power of Newcastle. We're going to be stormin' in the North.

I always like to see Ipswich do well though. Sir Bobby Robson had Newcastle running through his blood, but Ipswich was always special to him.

I would like to open proceedings with Manchester United vs Swansea.

Thoughts?

That brought me great amusement. Even better, Giroud is apparently injured. By 'better' I mean "I can't really tell if this is an improvement or hindrance".

Welbeck has been moved to Arsenal? Okay. I guess he's happy about it.

My local side somehow conspired to get 14 minutes of added time at the end of the second half during their most recent match.

And I thought 7 minutes at the end of the Newcastle Crystal Palace match was ridiculous. How the hell did they manage that?

Lower leagues can basically do anything.

When's England/Switzerland?

That is a surprisingly, and sadly, well worked argument.

So, England vs. Switzerland. Given this is the toughest fixture of our qualifying campaign on paper, I do not understand why we are starting Fabian Delph. If this goes well, fantastic! Do not see it going well though.

2-0. Stuff on both ends of the spectrum. All in all a good result, but the performance was shaky at best, especially at certain points. Cahill impressed a little, Wilshere needs to sort out what role he wants to play, Danny Welbeck may miraculously be turning into an able player.

So, Manchester United is all "armed and ready" for the nth time, and this time, they're looking to show off their newest guns against a debt ridden, weakened QPR. Everyone expects a landslide win over the London side, but will this be perhaps the upset QPR needs? Or will this somehow improve the mediocre United we have seen so far?

Also, I dislike how Kagawa returned to Dortmund. I liked Kagawa. A lot.

Anyone else catch the Arsenal-Man City game earlier today? Really entertaining match with both sides having a bunch of chances to win up until the very end. I did think Arsenal's defense was a bit lackluster at times, but they still managed a 2-2 draw.

United won! United finally won! Err, I mean, MUFC played nicely against QPR. Angel Di Maria is a god, and Madrid will regret to DEATH selling him. Falcao needs more time on the pitch, though.

Di Maria was the MVP for a reason. His dribble and nice little pass to Rooney were inspired. I felt bad for QPR, but that entire match was an artform.

We never speak of this incident again, lest we invoke the mockery of the Fish from Southampton.

>Di Maria

Can't help but feel he's a monstrously overrated player. Kagawa for me was better and just played heavily out of position. Di Maria has the work rate but the only reason he pulls off so many good things is because he's just about the only person in world football who can miss a cross 10+ times in one game and still think he's the greatest player on the pitch.

He's a little overrated but not massively.

Southampton seem to be doing well despite selling all of their players.

Honestly I am very much so probably just personally biased.

Southampton are doing brilliantly considering the players they sold.

When you have a look at the quality of some of the players they've brought through even just their academy and then sold on for huge amounts, you can't help but draw comparisons. Bale, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Chambers, and Shaw are all recent.
