Sunflora Unwritten Rules

Ok so taking inspiration from a conversation with Shadow, we should probably get around to doing this. The ASB has a large number of unwritten rules and conventions, things that everyone knows or thinks that everyone knows but isn't necessarily written down. Additionally, we don't bother to list previous rulings in a central place. Stuff like idle dodges, stuff like off type energy, stuff like how movement works.

Let's compile it, shall we?

There are three kinds of useful posts in this thread:

a) "guys, how does this work?" - questions about something you think might be an unwritten rule
b) "guys, this isn't written down" - posts detailing a rule which is commonly used in the ASB but not written down anywhere
c) "guys, why is our website so shit?" - posts listing where rules are actually written down so that they can be centrally compiled here and, later, on the website. Please ensure that you note what the ruling is and where the link is in your post. If rulings are superseded by subsequent rulings we still want to know about the old one.

I know that some people have tried to list stuff like this before and that many of you have no lives so let's see if we can't finish this off by Autumn shall we?

To be added: list!

First of all damn you for getting that song stuck in my head.

Second of all, how do critical hits work in the ASB? I know accuracy boosts can cause them and some sleep moves imply crits are more easily gotten on a sleeping Pokemon, but I've never seen anything official about it. Do crit chances exist on regular moves?

I guess you could update the Ghost info page with this information and perhaps add in the Kalos additions. Perhaps make it easier to understand how state changes work?

The fact that off-type energy is still divided between 1 HB's worth or 2 Ice Beams' worth is also quite confusing since there are some who ref the former, while others the latter.

Maybe some concrete definition on how boosts to Uplevels and Evolutions count? I've heard some who give health and energy boosts to the evolutions, and a power boost to the uplevels, although I've been using 10% stat boost per uplevel/evolution advantage.

Poké Mart: the OP contains basically every rule for how battles, Gyms, squad slots, SP uses (obviously) and items. Probably for some other stuff too.

Enthusiasm and discomfort, since they're being discussed in the SC thread right now re: Fairies. It seems as though there's no consensus at all as to what they do; I've seen it reffed only rarely, and it differed in every example. I don't think it needs to be set in stone with exact measurements and stuff due to ASB being vague as a rule, but at least a general idea of -what- is affected on a 'mon (fatigue? speed? accuracy?).

A main thing is Smeargle. I've heard several things from several sources and even asked LOs in back alleys in which they told me I couldn't quote them on their answer,

But the general consensus seems to be that Pokemon get 2 Flamethrowers of type energy for a move Sketched of that type, plus an additional Flamethrower per move Sketched beyond that. A few object otherwise, but that's what I've mostly seen. Probably needs some codification if we can get a real ruling.

Oh, also, the rule about 1 successful sleep move exists in like one Announcements post and that's basically it. It probably should be more visible, and on the site

Unwritten Rule # 72

Sliding rocks in a rocky arena/cave on top of a pokemon without the use of rock slide makes the boulders/rock pieces deal XX damage.

If Rock Slide is used against the same rocks/boulders, Rock Slide then embeds the actual rocks with rock energy, making those rocks deal rock damage.

You can find this on the chapter: Principles of Magix Arts.

Just a pointer, but you may want to consider making the fact that off type energy even exists in the first place more obvious. I know it's stated in the getting started thread, but I'm not entirely sure how many people actually go there when getting started. (Because it certainly doesn't seem like very many.) And besides that, there really aren't a whole lot of other places that mention it. Most of the time new guys just learn about it from other people.

Sleep and recovery limits should probably be documented.

Sculptor Token was confirmed not to double freezing chances by Dave a while back. Maybe that should be common knowledge

The token's description explicitly states that freezing is included so you can probably ignore him on that until he changes it.

Dave needs to get off the crack considering it literally mentions freezing in its descript and says "are twice as likely to have the effect triggered".

I will fight tooth and nail to my grave on this one, that ruling is just dumb.

...I said that only in regard to Ice Punch suddenly becoming 100% partial freeze, which is all kinds of bad. I never said that about any other attack, fuck off EG.

Because of created confusion, should be mentioned here that Spite does in fact have diminishing returns.

Ideally, refs should be using fresh, half-way point, and critical range of health/energy instead of thirds when reffing.

No, they shouldn't.

Right ok let's try and fill in some of the gaps so far. What has been highlighted as something not written down anywhere at all?

That's in the more recent attack descriptions that I wrote, same with the other Ground moves.

That's a relic of the old Shadow Ball description which we deliberately killed off. While you can ref Psychic popping such moves in the same way that you might ref a Flamethrower or a Mega Punch doing so, you could equally ref them as passing through the wave fairly unaffected. It's left up to the ref.
