Volkner's Buzzing Beginning

I grinned with a dose of enthusiasm as I took the Net Ball and the Technical Machine Hidden Power. I placed the Pokeballs into my bag. Holding the disc, I was at a loss as to what I should do with it. Suddenly, I remembered- the TM case! Grinning, I inserted the disc in my case. A case which I thought had no real use. It really came helpful. Walking forwards, I propped myself down onto a chair as Azure, my Piplup, hopped onto my lap.

"Isn't this place just great? Olivine City is such a nice place!" I said as I ruffled Azure's fur. The Piplup nodded in agreement as he cheered.

"THREE CHEERS FOR OLIVINE CITY!" I cheered loudly. Azure followed me as he imitated me in his penguin voice, his flippers waving up and down in excitement. Propping myself up, I saw others giving me a strange look as my face turned a light color of red.

"A-anyways, this place is full of electric types. You're a water type and it may be a little bit hard for you to fight them. Especially a Lanturn? Maybe we should go do some quests first?" I asked as I held Azure in front of me, locking eye contacts. The Piplup mumbled some words, obviously annoyed at my words. Piplup are proud species after all, but Azure seemed to see the reasons in my statement, and reluctantly nod. With that, I put Azure onto my head as I wandered around, thinking:

Now, where could the Quest Board be at?

As you lift Azure up and place him on your head, you begin to wander around the city. Although the industrialisation occurring throughout the surroundings was evident, the seafront remained a beautiful sight, the elegant waves lapping at the edge of the pier. Resting for a brief moment, you find yourself almost lost in the hypnotic rhythm of the waves, before a begrudging cry from Azure shocks you to your senses. Rising once again, you begin to lazily stroll about, trying to figure out where the Quest Board you had heard about was. Remembering vaguely that it was located somewhere in the ... Gym?, you begin to head for the edge of town. As you walk, you inadvertently bump into an incredibly gaudily dressed man, and as you make to apologise profusely, you recognise the league insignia on the chest of his clothing. Asking for directions, the man's face lights up readily.

"Oh man, you're looking for the Gym? Not bad, I like you enthusiasm, son! Nice to see some actual spirit in such a young guy. Just so happens I'm a Gym Trainer there. The names Marcus. Our Gym recently moved to the Industrial District, I can show you the way if you like?"

Marcus outstretches one hand, offering you a handshake.

So, do you take him up on his offer? Or make your own way there?

Looking at the man, I felt strange. I knew Olivine City was known for its rather "unique" Gym Leader, but he doesn't seem like a Gym Trainer - or at least how I would have envisioned it.

I shook his outstretched hand. He seemed like a cool person, someone I could definitely make acquaintance - if not friends - with. His hand was warm, seemingly reflecting his upbeat spirit. As I retracted my hand, I introduced myself:

"I am Volkner, a rookie trainer that just started! And this is my friend Azure!" I said, pointing to the Piplup resting on my head. He shook his flippers in his friendly greeting as he laid stomach flat on my head.

Without further ado, I followed him. Excitement bubbled in me. Today seems like a good day so far. How will the Olivewood City Gym look like? And how will my first quest be like? I simply could not wait.

You stroll through the pleasant day in close pursuit of Marcus, the brightly coloured man getting a number of greetings as you slowly approach the Industrial District. As you look around, walking into the heavily urbanised area, you realise that this place had once been naturally beautiful. Small areas of grassland continue to persist, a sad reminder of when this place once harboured the world famous Moomoo Milk farms. As you begin to lag behind somewhat, Marcus quickly shouts back to you, and you hurry after him. Meandering through the narrow pathways of the area, you make small talk with the man guiding you, not wanting to seem rude. Piplup happily dazes the entire time, fervently looking around and drinking in his new surroundings. After what seems like an eternity of walking, Marcus suddenly stops, looking up in pride at the building before you. Holding his arms out wide, his booming voice reflects.

"And this, Volkner, is the Olivine City Gym. Impressive, right?"

He turns to smile at you, and you likewise look beyond him to observe the Gym. The sight before you is certainly ... impressive, but you're not sure if it's in the same sense as Marcus implies. Before you stands a clearly refurbished warehouse, with the imposing symbol of the league plastered above the entranceway. As you stand, Marcus moves towards the doorway, looking over his shoulder.

"Well, you coming or not?"

"Well, you coming or not?"

I nodded, albeit a bit hastily. Not wanting to offend Marcus, I followed the Gym Trainer into the interior of the Olivine Gym. If I found the outside extraordinary, I was more... Surprised by the inside. Spacious, the Olivine Gym, a previous old steel mill, was buzzing with activities. Steel type trainers faced off each other to train at this slightly ran-down place. However, I felt a slight sense of warmth and fuzziness in the inside, to the point where I find it even slightly accommodating.

Kicking a can to one side, I continued to take in the scenes of this place. What an interesting place. I had definitely not been expecting this for a hideout of party hounds... It was interesting.. In an interesting way.

I scratched Azure, lying flat on my head. Perhaps our adventure is starting to pick up?

As you slowly wander into the interior of the Gym, you find yourself both taken aback and intrigued by the surroundings. You continue to wander forward, before Marcus snaps you out of your daze once again.

"So, I'm assuming one of the main reasons you came here was to challenge our leader, right? Well, that's not going to happen. Not just yet anyway. The boss is out right now, and he's not accepting any challenger's." Marcus shrugs his shoulder in a matter of fact manner, before his face explodes with yet another wide grin.

"Thing is though, he's left a noticeboard just over there." Waving with one hand, Marcus points towards an almost run down wooden board, with numerous notes pinned to it.

"Thing is littered with odd jobs you can do. Boss-man left it there for trainers like yourself to gander at, was hoping some folk could help him out with some of the requests. Chances are you'll be rewarded handsomely, and if there's any way to try currying favour to try earn your battle, that'll be it." The Gym trainer continues his spiel, making it evident that he's done this many times before. Before you can even get a word in edgeways, he continues.

"'Course, if that's not to your liking, you can always just take on one of our training sessions. Sure, might be a little difficult since you only seem to have one Pokemon with you at the minute, but the experience is worth it in a way."

So, which option to you choose?

"Training Session or Quest?" I mumbled to myself. It was a very hard decision. On one hand, I could definitely appreciate some experience of battling from training Azure up. But on the other hand, I'm not exactly interested by training after all. Sure, they're important, but I guess I was more of the 'learn as I go along' type? I sighed, it was just the beginning, and I was already having trouble making up decisions.

"What do you think, Azure? I suppose you'd like questing?"

"Pip!" Azure replied with an upbeat tone, nodding his head furiously. I smiled upon our agreement. After all, our main purpose for coming to the gym was not for seeing the gym leader, but questing and exploring the town a bit. Though the electric types worry me…

"I think I'll check out some quests, but I'm a bit worried by electric types. Any suggestions as to how Azure can deal with them?"

"I think I'll check out some quests, but I'm a bit worried by electric types. Any suggestions as to how Azure can deal with them?"

Marcus pauses as his brow furrows, and after a short while, he crosses his arms. Frowning, he cocks his head to one side, clearly concentrating intently on racking his brains. A few brief seconds pass, before the young man before you finally lets out a heavy sigh. Shrugging his shoulders, he makes a thing of making you realise he's tried his hardest, before apologising.

"Sorry, kid. Haven't the foggiest. In case it isn't obvious, I'm more of a Steel- type specialist. Ask me how to handle those, and I'm your man any day. Ask me about a Water- type and how to handle them properly? Man, I wish I could help you. Best advice I could probably give is ... I don't know, try to stay away from them maybe? Won't have to deal with Electric- types if you don't go out of your way to battle them, right?"

Giving you one final grin, Marcus slowly begins to walk towards a large door situated at the far end of the Gym. Waving his hand, he calls back to you, his expression betraying the fact he is clearly still troubled by his inability to assist you with your final question.

"Hey, kid. Heads up for you. If you ever find yourself in a bind, just call back here. Any one of the Gym trainers will be able to assist you, and I'm sure a couple of the lay about guys we have around the place will be able to impart some knowledge on you. Just give us a call, yeah?"

Before you can respond, the vibrantly dressed guy disappears beyond the doorway, and you slowly turn your attention to the quest board at the other end of the Gym. Walking forward, you begin to scour the wooden noticeboard, small notes pinned everywhere amongst the large face. Searching gingerly, Marcus' words echo in the back of your mind.

"Won't have to deal with Electric- types if you don't go out of your way to battle them, right?"

As you stand, motionless, another trainer approaches you from behind.

"Hey, kid. I heard that you're worried about battling Electric- types. I'm not surprised, if all you have is that Piplup."

The young man before you looks relatively clean, although the long trench coat which frames his otherwise slim body is faded in areas, and is torn a great deal nearer the edges of the coat. He holds one hand forward, a small piece of paper pinched between his fingers.

"Here, how about you take this quest? I picked it up earlier but I'm not sure it interests me all that much now. It's a pretty simple task - extermination of a few troublesome Pokemon down at the Bay. Shouldn't be encountering too many Electric- types down near the waters, right?"

You stare at the paper handed towards you, mulling over your options. Do you accept this sudden gesture of good will, or mistrust the seemingly selfless gesture?

I looked at the stranger's outstretched hand curiously. I wondered how he had managed to hear about how I was rattled on fighting electric types with Azure. I was certain I only told Marcus. Nonetheless, the strange man was right - fighting a horde of wild electrics is doing no favor first battle with Piplup. Perhaps this gesture of goodwill would help me in the long run. Despite it being sudden, I had no doubts that his proposal came from genuine concern - or maybe it was my extreme optimism working up?

"Wow, that's very kind of you, sir." I addressed him, hesitating at my last choice of word. Formality was not my best suit, but sometimes it's just required.

"I think I'll take it, if you don't mind?" I smiled, attempting to develop some form of friendly interaction. Azure squeals as he waves his flipper in introduction.

The young trainer before you grins widely as you gingerly take the quest from his hand.

"Hey man, I wouldn't offer if I didn't mind. We've got to watch each others backs these days, right? Can't have your little friend here getting himself hurt. See you 'round, yeah?"

With that, the man turns quickly, before heading towards the far end of the gym, seemingly heading towards a larger group of trainers, each of with are laughing a great deal. Azure seems a little bit disheartened to watch the man go, but he quickly turns back to you, waving his flippers around playfully and jumping up at you, his small, playful pecks clearly urging you to read the small note now enclosed in your hands.

Quote:
Aspiring trainers! It's your Gym Leader Oliver here! Seems that the good folk down at the Bay have been having a mite of trouble lately. Looks like a swarm of Mantyke have taken too much of a liking to one of the ports, probably in search of food. They'll need repelling, since they're disrupting the boats coming in and out of dock. There's sure to be a reward, and if not, I'll ensure you're compensated in some way for your hard work, so needn't fear.
Folding the small note of paper, you place it in your pocket, before heading for the exit of the Gym. You vaguely remember the location of the Bay from your brief foray through Olivine, and Azure is clearly more than happy for you two to embark on this brief quest, the Piplup eagerly chasing at your heels while waving his flippers, clearly quite ecstatic.

"Let's move forward with a skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip!" I cheered as I continued to grip the piece of paper, moving towards the Olivewood City's Bay area, excited at the thought of my first quest as Azure eagerly runs after me.

"Speaking of which, Azure, we should devise some kind of plans before we head right into our quest. Right?" I suggested as I began to slow down, thinking how the two of us seemed to be rushing through this way too quickly. Finding a nearby bench, I sat myself down as I began to think, while Azure hopped up and joined us.

"Let's see... at the Pokemon Center which we started from - they gave us something like a TM Case, and a TM to start us off with. Apparently those TMs can be used to teach Pokemon special moves..." Searching through my bag, I felt the touch of Pokeballs, some Berries, some Potions - it was a general mess. Everything that goes into the Bag gets a bit mashed up and mixed up. After some hard navigation with some troubles, a sense of excitement rushed through me as my hand felt the TM Case, a solid storage compartment for CD-like items called TMs. Pulling it out from my bag, Azure quickly hopped next to me in excitement as we flipped it open. It was mostly empty, except for one lone TM that they had handed out at the beginning of my journey. This left a great amount of space for future TMs - assuming I'd get that far. Slipping the sole TM - Hidden Power - out of the case, I held it in my hand as Azure popped forward curiously, a mixture of excitement and anxiety being felt.

"So... uh... How do I use this?" I said, trying to wreck my brain to remember. It took me quite awhile to figure out but when I did, excitement returned and flooded me. Placing the TM Case carefully into one of the many areas of the case, I directed it towards Azure. A flash of light darted out from the pointer as Azure's eyes widened, surrounded by a pure white glow. Soon, a light 'beep' sound followed, and a cheerful expression, mixed with triumph, was flashed on the Piplup's face.

Quickly nabbing out my Pokedex, I scanned Azure's learnt moves. It seemed like the TM really work, as an additional slot - Hidden Power [Electric] popped up. Azure quickly flashed a smug grin, at the same time full of joy. Was that even possible? I thought to myself as I picked Azure up.

"That was great work, partner. Now, let's go and meet those problematic peeps at the Port without stopping, shall we?"

Azure replied with a squeak of excitement as I slipped the case back into my bag.

"Let's move forward with a skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip!"

Azure in your arms, you quickly make your way towards the bay, throwing caution to the wind. As you approach the area though, you pause briefly, an ominous feeling taking hold of you. Azure leaps from your arms, his entire body tense, but as quick as the feeling takes hold of the pair of you, it passes. Shrugging, you make your way back towards the bay, Azure merrily hopping along close behind.

The sea air blasts through your hair as you finally walk into the bay, the crystal waters bobbing gently against the concrete piers stretching into the ocean. The midday sun sparkles on the horizon, and Azure looks around ecstatically, his expression lightning up as he dodges legs, running towards one of the nearby piers. Looking down over the waters, the Piplup begins to frantically jump up and down ... before, without warning, darting into a nearby crowd. The Piplup is vanished in seconds, gone entirely from your sight.

What will you do?

"Ah, phew!" I heaved as I made my way to the harbour. A sudden grip of tenseness gripped me, rather nervous as to what I was about to face. The thought of a first quest was exciting but at the same time nerve-wrecking. I could see the same clouds of thought in Azure's face as we met the harbour.

Suddenly, a wild gust of air rushes through the atmosphere, stealing the anxiety and nervousness away from Azure and I as speedily as it came to us. Azure's face softened as we stare at the beautiful ocean beholding us, the noon sun causing the deep blue ocean to glitter, as if it was matching our excitement. Steering close to the harbour, Azure eagerly hopped over, his eyes meeting the water, as I began to stretch, savouring the cool sea breeze. Suddenly, the Piplup began hopping wildly up and down like a bouncing ball, my eyes quickly followed the motion. Like a guided bullet, Azure rushed away right into the crowd.

"Ah, Azure! Wait, what?"

Stealing a quick glance at the waters which Azure was staring to, the angle made it hard for me to see. However, no time was to be wasted, as I quickly made a mad dash right into the crowd which my blue-coloured pal disappeared into. Pushing through people with a volley of "sorry"s and "excuse me"s, a bead of sweat rolled down my cheek.

Forcing your way through the congestion of the bay, you finally manage to force yourself into a small clearing within the throng of passersby. Yelling into the air, you are taken by surprise when a sharp cry rings out, and seconds later, Azure bursts from the crowd. The small Piplup has tears streaming down his face, and as he leaps into your arm, it becomes apparent that the small Pokemon had become massively worried as he wandered through the area. Enthralled by the sights, he hadn't realised that he had left you behind, and before he knew it, panic set in.

Before you have much time to react, a gruff voice rings out.

"Oi, kid. Is that your Piplup? Better take fairer care of him, eh?"

Turning to the source of the voice, you drink in the sight of the man before you. Well built and fairly stocky, muscle ripples beneath the surface of the man's well toned skin. His ill fitting vest bears a simple title. "Bay Manager".

Mind filled with anxiety as I pushed through the crowd, I scanned my surroundings for any signs of Azure, the Piplup having ran off into the crowd. In desperate pursuit, worry flooded my thoughts. What would happen if I can't find Azure?! Bursting through the crowd, I came to a clearing. I had no idea where Azure went as I looked around, hoping to find him. Except the Piplup found me instead as Azure darted from the crowd, rushing up to me in tears. With an eager leap, Azure hopped right into my arm, releasing his pent up worry and fear. It seemed like there were times Azure was really like a newborn.

"Oi, kid. Is that your Piplup? Better take fairer care of him, eh?"

Eyes moving to the source of the voice, I saw a formidable-looking man. Tanned and muscular, I thought the uniform seemed a little bit... strange on him, especially the almost cute-looking title that he wore - "Bay Manager".

"Y-Yes sir!" I replied quickly. "Thank you for helping me find my Piplup... And er..."

I fished a piece of paper from my pocket as I placed Azure on my head.

"Er... I'm here at the Bay for my first quest," I said, revealing the piece of crumpled quest paper. "Azure and I are here to do some... um... work! We may not look like much but we promise to do our best!" I paused rather awkwardly. "I mean, er, I haven't done this type of thing before so I'm rather confused on where to report or stuff..." I fiddled with the piece of paper rather nervously.

Explaining to the man that you are here for quest seems to have lightened his mood. Smiling wildly, he quickly introduces himself as Ricardo, before bellowing to one of the nearby workers.

"Oi, Andre! Get over here. Got some work for ye'."

Scrambling, a boy not much older than yourself comes running over, his hair drenched with sweat. Staggered over, he quickly regains his breath, her straightening himself and giving an awkward salute to Ricardo. Disgruntled, Ricardo frowns, crossing his arms.

"Less of that saluting crap, boy. Show this young trainer here the way over to the dock troubled by the Mantyke. Quick sharp now."

Issuing a practiced "Yes sir!", Andre waits for Ricardo to leave, before giving a relieved sigh.

"Bloody hell. Had me lifting heavy cargo all morning. Can't take that crap much longer.

Anyway, best get you sorted out, eh?"

Smiling to you, he slowly walks ahead, gesturing for you to follow.

Thankfully, the Bay Manager did not seem to be too judgmental. I was worried that he would deny me of the quest because I made a mistake this was losing sight of my own Pokemon. I grinned, the momentary waves of anxiety now replaced by excitement. I was getting closer and closer to my first ever quest. It's really something to look forward to! I thought to myself as a delighted grin unknowingly dawned on my mouth as I listened to the brief exchange between Andre and Ricardo.

As the Bay Manager walked off, at least out of earshot, Andre gave a relieved sigh as if a load was taken off on him.

"Bloody hell. Had me lifting heavy cargo all morning. Can't take that crap much longer," he said. I broke into another smile, noticing the stark difference between Andre and Andre-with-Ricardo. It was almost as if Ricardo leaving took away another "heavy cargo" he had been carrying on his back for all the while.

"Anyway, best get you sorted out, eh?" he smiled as he walked forward, gesturing me to follow. Nodding eagerly, I caught up with him, Azure now in my hands. It would not be the best thing for another straying off to happen again. After all, there was a possibility Azure could have bumped into someone not as upright and honest as Ricardo.

"So, uh, nice to meet you Andre, I'm Volkner and this is Azure," I said, eyeing my Piplup. "Anyways, is there anything I should know about the problem? Just kinda curious. How long has the problem been ongoing?" I said, attempting to get more information on the quest - and maybe try ot make conversation.

Andre frowns at your question. Standing still, the boy crosses his arms as he stares at the ground with a contemplative expression. After a few staunch moments of silence, the boy looks back towards you, with a furrowed look on his face.

"You know, I don't think I can quite give you a brilliant answer to that. I guess it sort of happened as a gradual progression. They started showing up in small numbers naturally, and it just slowly became a problem, I guess. Anyway, the dock is over this way."

With the boy showing you the way, the seemingly unnavigable straits of the port are easily pulled apart, and Andre seems to step into a quicker pace as you begin to approach your destination. With the pair of you now running, Andre yells out as he points out the dock where the Mantyke are supposed to be ... before abruptly stopping.

As you finally come to stand next to the boy, you realise the cause of his apprehension.

A van is parked on the pier, and a number of men are grabbing at the Mantyke in the waters, forcing them into small containers. Cramped amidst the water in the boxes, the Mantyke look distressed, and Azure begins to squeal out loudly.

How do you react to this sudden, dramatic unfolding?

Arriving to the scene, it was clearly not what I expected.

Grabbing the many Mantyke and stuffing them into a box, Andre stopped before the scene, as I quickly halted my footsteps. Distressed faces of Mantyke were evident as they were squeezed into those small prisons. Azure was clearly disturbed and angered at the scene, as he squeals, his eyes narrowing in rage towards the group of men abducting those Mantyke.

I could feel my own anger rising as I looked at the things happening to the poor Mantyke. That was why so many Pokemon were afraid of humans, because of how we treated them, even after the Disaster which made Pokemon more timid than usual. My fist clenched, I looked at Piplup, who nodded in response. I grabbed Andre's right hand,

"Let's stop this, shall we?"

"Let's stop this, shall we?"

Nodding the affirmative, Azure looks over towards the trapped Mantyke, a look of worry clearly set in the Piplup's face. As you make to move towards the poachers, Andre catches you by the wrist, pulling you towards a nearby shipping crate. Forcibly ducking you both down behind the construct, the young boy whispers under his breath.

"Look, we can't just go charging in there. We're better off taking them by surprise. We need to trail them somehow. I know the area pretty well, so we can wait until they're gone before figuring out where they're based."

Almost as if to coincide with his words, the man loading the van abruptly slams the shutters close, before climbing into the passengers seat. With a chuckling laugh rising from the vehicle, Azure can barely restrain himself, the Piplup itching to move into action. The van starts up, and drives off, the crunching sound of the tires grinding against gravel as it moves away sending a look of anger across the face of Andre.

"Those bastards ... Anyway, we need to go investigate the pier for clues."

Andre said as he jerked, forcing me to squat down beside him behind a crate. I bit my lips, I had let the impulse gotten the better of me. Two person was probably not enough to deal with a van of people and we certainly needed either manpower or the element of surprise on our side. Grabbing Azure and pushing him behind the shipping crate, I whispered urgently to the Piplup.

"Look, I know we both want to save. But we have got to have a plan first, alright?" Azure, however, was not as receptive to the idea, as he seemed to struggle against my arm, wanting to charge in recklessly into the battlefield. I tried my best to restrain him. Azure seemed to be struggling as well, giving a furious glare at the van as it started with a "vroom!" before driving off into the distance.

"Sorry, Azure," I said to the Piplup as the van drove off. "We probably can't handle that many people. We all want to save them but we need a plan, cant go charging in, right" The Piplup loosened, as he seemed to sigh, surrendering to the idea of planning before attacking. I patted the Piplup, feeling his soft fur on my hand as I nodded to Andre, who was just as equally angry, yet at the same time calm enough to suggest some logical ideas rather than charging in recklessly.

"Look for clue around the pier... huh?" I stood up behind the crate. The van seemed gone, and the episode seemed to have happened without any remaining traces. Strolling towards the crystal blue sea, I inhaled a good amount of the sea air.

"Let's get to work!" I shouted, as I began to scan my surroundings, hoping to find anything that may prove useful.

Calming your Piplup, you and Andre leave your hiding spot, walking over to the pier where the van was parked. Andre looks around tentatively, bending down towards the ground, before gingerly crawling along the track the van took. With a muffled curse, the boy draws himself back to full height, before awkwardly leaning backwards. A moment of consideration, and he holds his hands up in a shrugging motion, dumbfounded.

"The tracks aren't heavy enough to follow very well. I could vaguely trace them, but it wouldn't be anything concrete, or quick."

Sighing heavily, he turns back towards you, before the silence is suddenly broken by a distant plopping noise, followed by whimpering sounds of distress. The sound seems to be coming from the edge of the pier, and on approach, Azure begins to squeal excitedly. Bending down to look over the edge of the pier, you realise immediately the cause of his excitement.

The waters erupt with activity.

Water splashes onto your face as a small Pokemon leaps from the waters, the wide winged Mantyke managing to stay aloft by undulating her dives, her worried expression clearly telling of a great distress. Without warning, she takes off in the direction the van went.

Upon hearing the rather depressing news, I bit my lips, not wanting to believe our luck. It seemed like any types of evidence left behind by the vanishing van are hardly conclusive enough to lead us to its den. There's got to be something we can do, but what... I frowned as I thought about the possible links to the group of Mantyke abducted by the van, staring at the ground for any possible inspiration. Suddenly, a distressed voice from the crystal blue waters broke my train of thoughts. Azure squealed in excitement as he hops up and down. In curiosity, I strolled over to the edge of the pier, bending over when...

SPLASH!

A jet of water shoots out of the sea, as a Mantyke shoots upwards, her eyes full of anxiety and concern. Managing to carry out some kind of spectacular maneuver mid-air, the Mantyke spins as she speeds off, her wings extended in the direction to where the train left.

I grinned. "Well, that's our clue," I stated as a I shook the water off my hair. "I think this is probably the best we can get, let's follow it until we find out the lair of those men, shall we?" Without waiting for a response, Azure bolted off energetically, clearly excited and seemingly to be full of sunshine and hope - at least compared to his despair not too long ago.

As the Mantyke hurriedly takes off, bobbing through the dusty tracks, your trio quickly take after the energetic youngster. Mantyke's undulating motions seem awkward at first, but it quickly becomes apparent that the young Water- type has an uncanny mastery of reading the aerial currents, dipping and diving as she glides to maintain an altitude resting roughly at head height. As she ducks and weaves, she emits a strange sound, the high pitched frequencies barely detectable by yourself. Azure, however, seems reassured by the tinny noise, confidence growing as he stumbles after this new found lead. Finally, Mantyke abruptly stops, darting to one side and bobbing around a nearby tree.

The reason quickly becomes apparent as you burst into a clearing.

Some distance away, parked with the engine still running, is the van which abducted the colony of Mantyke. A crude pool is dug out of the ground, filled with dirty water, and the captured Mantyke sit dejected in the waters, their bodies weighted down by rusted chains. The sight is one of sheer depravity, and the young Mantyke which called upon your aid now stares towards you, her eyes brimming with tears.

(OOC: SWITCH TO THIRD PERSON PERSPECTIVE ;P)

The Mantyke floating off, Volkner quickly chose to follow its non-literal footsteps and, along with his trustworthy penguin companion, ran after the Water/Flying type. As he tracked after the Mantyke, Volkner could barely hear the extremely high-pitched sounds emitted by the Mantyke.

"What are these sounds for?" wondered Volkner silent. As if in reply, Azure uttered squeaks of delight and approval, the Piplup clearly knowing what was going on. Reassured, Volkner followed the Mantyke silently as the Water type turned and twisted, riding the current in a skillful manner.

After a trip that felt like an eternity, the Mantyke came to a halt at a clearing. Observing the new surroundings, Volkner's heart stopped when he saw the offending van. The engine still running, the abducted colony of Mantyke has been relocated to an equally horrendous location. Corroded iron chains hold the Water types in place, restraining their movement as they remain partially submerged in a makeshift pool, filled with waters of disgusting colours. It was no wonder that Pokemon have shied away from humans, based on this incident. Filled with disgusted shock, Volkner met the guiding Mantyke's unmoving eyes, the eyes that are on the verge of bursting out tears. Swallowing down this lump of anger, Volkner forced himself to think and plan rationally. Swiveling to face Andre, Volkner sucked in great volumes of air to calm himself,

"So Andre, what should we do? Since the engine is still running, those poachers should still be around here right?"
