This is incorrect, Ron did actually name me president. He had tried to do it officially a time or two before that as well, but in the interest of keeping him around and active I deferred. In the end he said that as I'd been running the league for years that it wouldn't be proper for him to call himself president anymore, and I took over in title as well.

I started as a regular B, Kuno, I just got permission to ref yours before my test was graded due to Mozz laziness. Thanks to my amazing interpretation of Mozz's one question ref test, "What happens when Electrode explodes on a grass arena."- "There's a pretty big hole in the arena." "You get a B!" The only ref before modern times to be an official "D" grade was Eternal Chaos.
I gave you the "this guy isn't an idiot let me just make sure he's not presently drooling" test. The people who I didn't know much about got the long form one. EC did not do well.

TL;DR: BG PASBL SITE SUMMARY/INACCURATE ANECDOTAL INFORUMP; READ AT OWN PERIL/IF YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO READ THE SITE THAT RESOURCEFUL YOUNG LAD LOST POSTED/IF YOU WERE AROUND BACK THEN AND MIGHT NEED TO CORRECT ME ON EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T ME SPITTING THE CIRCA-2001 RULES PAGES BACK IN ASB'S FACE

Pretty much just a rundown of some of the differences in rules back then.

-Let's get the most infamous part out of the way: lax sig standards. OHKO moves were not uncommon (some people had a ton of them), and you'd occasionally get an extreme example like Massaohane/Itami, the Super Evolutions, and the Flying Onix. I threw the "extremes," plus a couple of examples of OHKO sigs, under the following spoiler. If you go to the Squads page from Lost's link, you can see more squads for yourself.

Spoiler: show

Male Machoke
Machoke once got so mad with a Cubone that he beat it up and stole it's bone.
Special Attack: Light Speed Bone Smash (Fighting)
Machoke instantly appears behind his opponent and hits it with it's bone to the back of the neck that can not be deflected or avoided. If Machoke hits it's opponent in a certain spot (30% chance) it will instantly KO the opponent, if Machoke missies this spot (70% chance) the attack will cause damage equal to a bone club with 20% chance of scaring the enemy, making them more hesitant to attack next turn, and with a 1/3 damage dealt recoil. Also with the bone, Machoke can use the other bone attacks Bone Club, Bonemerang and Bone Rush, though not with any real proficiency.

Omekakeshi: Female Heracross
Exactly what Omekakeshi has against men isn't known, but she has a hard time trusting them, even though she finds herself turned by a pretty face just as easily as anyone else. Omekakeshi always seems to keep some sort of personal grudge against opponents who have injured her greatly, and it is not uncommon for Archaic to challenge that opponent to a 1 on 1 match so Omekakeshi can gain her revenge. Like Maebureshi, Ogamashi seems to have some sort of common bond with Massaohane who is something like an embodiment of her rage, as well as with her close partners, Maebureshi and Ogamashi. A particularly close bond is shared between her and Itamiyokubo, or at least was before Itami started to go off the deep end. Another close bond exists between her and Ogamashi's mate, Oenjerushi. However, seeing as Omekakeshi had set her sights on the Scizor originally, this could end up turning into quite the rivalry unless Maebureshi is successful in his advances. One thing that must be noted is that it would not be unlikely to see Omekakeshi put in care of Itami's recently born child at some point if Itami proves to be unfit for motherhood (Assuming she hasn't already). Omekakeshi's name, oddly enough, roughly translated from Japanese means Death's Concubine.
Special Attack: Bobbit (Dark)
Omekakeshi charges at her opponent with her Horn aimed quite low indeed. If the move is successful (50% base chance) , the opposing Pokémon is knocked out and if realistic rules are in effect has a 1% base chance of cutting off the opponents exterior reproductive organs (It sometimes surprises my how many ways there is to say ****), effectively rendering the Pokémon incapable of producing children, as well as possibly inflicting some (SOME !?!) permanent physical scarring and psychological trauma. If the move fails (50% base chance), damage equal to a 1/4 strength mega horn is inflicted, with a 1/2 damage done to opponent recoil on Omekakeshi. This move automatically fails against any female opponent (The opposing Pokémon, not the Trainer.) If no sex is specified for the opponent, the move will act as if the opponent was male.

Massaohane: Male Charmeleon
Massaohane looks like death incarnate. Bones and organs show through great rents in his flesh, and skin hangs off them. Its arms and legs are bent at impossible angles, and it is perpetually hunched forward from the position its legs force it into. An eye is missing, and nothing covers the empty socket. And that was several months ago. His condition has worsened since then, and his entire skin had burned off. Massaohane is on the slow road to recovery. His endurance training is finally over, and the pain he can withstand is Super-Pokémon. Even a boiling pit of super-heated lava was unable to stop him accomplishing his goal. Already, Massaohane has fulfilled the 10 battle sit out, and Archaic has steadily raised a significant quantity of service points. The target of 50 no longer looks out of reach. It now seems a moot point that Massaohane will recover, and when he does, may whatever deities they worship have mercy on those who have crossed him. And at his side through this long process of recovery will be Itami, his mate. Until such time as Massaohane recovers, Massaohane will permanently suffer from the permanent damages Horrific Visage and Heartless, and and will suffer from the permanent damage Horrific Injuries unless 50 service points are spent on him and he misses 10 battles while the treatment is applied. His continuing recovery will depend on how he is treated by Archaic in future battles.
Special Training: Broken Soul (Ghost/Dark)
Massaohane is a broken soul, used as a "punching bag" of sorts by the rest of Archaic's squad, mainly as training against Fire type opponents. It has been heavily mistreated, and has never visited a Pokémon Centre in its life. It is a testament to its strength of will and courage that it has managed to live. Due to its circumstances, the following rules apply to this Pokémon. Massaohane may not use ANY Fire type attacks other than Flamethrower, which does 1.5x normal damage. The attack Frustration will deal 2x its normal damage (About 4x the damage of a tackle). In every battle situation, it will act last, being unused to being given direct orders from its trainer. It may use any Dark type attack other than Thief. Any Dark type attack it uses will be at 1.5x damage. It may use the Ghost type attack Night Shade. After every battle, if Massaohane has suffered even the most minor of injuries, it will suffer a new injury as part of its Horrific Injuries. It will NOT however, miss any battles due to any of these injuries, and can be forced into battle again straight away, possibly further aggravating its injuries. There is a 1% chance that after every battle Archaic is a trainer in (No matter if this Pokémon was even in the team for that battle or not) this Pokémon will DIE. For every injury it currently has as part of its Horrific Injuries, a further 1% is added to this, up to a maximum of 25%. This Pokémon WOULD recover from its permanent damage as normal, however the fact that it is not being put into a Pokémon Centre to tend these injuries will mean that it recovers at half the normal rate.
League Official's Note: Now that it's "Endurance Training" is over means that this Pokémon will eventually recover from what injuries it has sustained, but until the 50 service points and 10 battles are done, the original injuries cannot be healed. Once it is healed, the signature move will dramatically change to reflect his new condition.

Itamiyokubo'o (Itami): Female Charmeleon
'Itami' has what could only be described as mental problems. She was Archaic's first experiment as training against fire types for his bugs. Instead of coming to be like Massaohane has, always with some spark of fighting back left within his soul somewhere, Itami grew to actually like pain, to receive gratification from being hurt. Even with his harsh training methods, this disturbed Archaic, and she was shut away for a very long time. Recently, with the continued degradation of Massaohane, Archaic has resumed training with her, including sessions where his bugs fought against both of the Charmeleons. It is during these sessions that it seems Itami has developed some sort of perverse attraction to Massaohane. When Archaic left her to tend to his Bug's wounds at one point, it seems that she did....something with him. She has recently laid an egg due to this. Recent battle results have caused Archaic to resume her training, and to correct earlier mistakes. Her mental problems may never be solved, but after having been suitably chastised, Itami now feels ashamed of her craving for pain, which may or may not cause a whole new set of problems. Her close ties to Massaohane have started to give her perhaps a sense of guilt for what she did to him, and indeed, in an uncharacteristic move, it is Itami who has given much of the support and caring to Massaohane during his slow recovery. Starting to despise receiving pain and having her friends and "family" receive pain hasn't stopped her in reveling in causing it. Her brain has not yet made the connection that the other side must have friends and family too. If she does, then her madness will only be all the more deep, and completely different to what people have come to expect of her. As a final note, Itamiyokubo is bisexual. She can be effected by Attract, Charm and related signature moves from both male and female opponents.
Special Training: Pleasure from pain (Dark)
Itamiyokubo derives a perverse pleasure from being hurt, from hurting others, and from witnessing and contributing to the sufferings of others. See will never avoid an attack and will always try to take it in a way that will cause the most pain to her as possible. (N.B. This will not always necessarily be the one which will reduce her HP the most.) Likewise, she will disobey her trainers orders at the blink of an eye if she can find a better way to cause pain to her opponent, better being defined as a way that will actually see her physically strike the opponent at close range. (N.B. This will not always necessarily be the one which will reduce her HP the most.)
Because of her liking for pain, Itamiyojubo will continue to fight on long after she should have left the arena. She must be literally knocked out to stop her continuing. If she is conscious, she will fight on. Also, because of her obsession with pain she has built up a resistance to it, meaning she will be able to endure much more pain (Though not more HP loss) than other Pokémon.
Finally, it is possible for her to literally have a, well, I guess you could call it a *ahem* moment of gratification (And all the eyes of the teenagers and older in the audience suddenly bug out), right in the middle of the battle if she is continuously put in pain or inflicts great deals of it on her opponents. This will leave her with low energy for the next 2 rounds at least, though actual physical contact with the opponent will speed up the regaining of energy. For obvious reasons, if she has one of these *ahem* moments of gratification in a round, she will not do any more attacks that round.

Rats: Male Raticate
Probably the must crude, vulgar Pokémon in the ASB, except for maybe The Mozz's Wobbuffet. His attitude and tendency to save disgusting events on film has earned him several beatings from other Pokémon, including some PVP-esque attacks by Massaohane. He's also had a daughter with Mozz's Umbreon Eevil, and while he most likely loves them both, his nature makes him unlikely to admit it. A member of Grit's "Super squad."
Special Technique: Super evolution-Raticlaw (Normal)
This technique as two moves, and cannot be used in conjunction with any other attacks. This attack requires a good chunk of energy as well.
When used, Rats begins to glow. When this attack is completed (takes 1 normal round of time), Rats has the following characteristics:
-stands at 3'6" and weighs 105 lbs.
-has longer limbs, and any part of his fur that was brown is now black.
-all stats (except HP) increase, but so does energy use.
-retains normal type.
-may now use Slash and Scratch, thanks to longer, sharper claws. However, Rats may no longer use Bide, Defense Curl, Attract (no one likes him as a Raticate as it stands), and Substitute in Raticlaw form.
In addition, Rats may use an additional attack in Raticlaw form:
-Elemental Claw (varies): Rats hits the opponent with a Slash attack that's slightly weaker than a normal equivalent. However, it may be 1 of the following elements (determined randomly by the referee):
-Ice: Rats' claw turns cold as he Slashes the opponent, doing ice damage and a 10% of partial freezing.
-Electric: Rats' claw pulses with electricity as he Slashes the opponent, doing electric damage with a 30% of paralysis.
-Fire: Rats' claw is surrounded by flame as he Slashes the opponent, doing fire damage and with a 20% of causing a burn.
-Poison: Rats' claw is coated with a Toxic-like substance as he Slashes the opponent, doing poison-type damage and poisoning the opponent if he breaks the skin.

Sparda is a natural warrior; gifted in reflexes, speed and strength. He was born with an “X” shaped scar between his eyes. Also, his whole body is completely pitch black, except for sliver streaks on his claws, head and his chest. He was named after the legendary devil swordsman who conquered the emperor of the underworld to save the upper-realm.
Special Technique: Super Evolution Devil Transformation: Sparda (Normal)
The scar’s secret is revealed as red light pours from it and envelopes Sparda. It takes a full turn for the light to subside. When it does subside, Scizor's appearance and abilities change:
-Stands at 6'4" tall, weighs 215 pounds and has the frame of a moderately muscular man.
-Body is covered in medium red and black armor, which is magically sealed to him as though it was skin, which makes it flexible. (see picture of Sparda from Devil May Cry)
-Holds a large, curved, two handed sword (see a picture of the Sparda sword from Devil May Cry). The blade thins near the hilt and then attaches at the end of the handle, so the blade goes the entire length of the sword on the side it is sharp on.
-Wears a black helmet that completely covers his head with long Ram Horns that point towards his chin.
-All stats increase slightly, except for speed, which decreases slightly. Energy consumption also increases by quite a moderate amount.
-While in this form, Sparda may not use Metal Claw, Wing Attack, Steel Wing, False Swipe (due to lose of claws), Razor Wind, Endure, Substitute, Attract and Double Edge.
-While in this form, Sparda may use Faint Attack, Shadowball and Dynamic Punch.
-Hyper Beam does not come in a beam. The energy is concentrated into the sword and Sparda slashes. Causes same amount of damage and he still must recharge.
In addition, Sparda may use one additional attack while in Devil form.
-Phantom Blade (Dark)
Sparda flies up into the air and his blade flares with dark energy. The energy is then concentrated into the tip of the sword. Sparda then holds the sword above his head and twirls it in a circular motion, faster and faster, until a black portal appears. Sparda then throws his sword extremely fast at the opponent like a spear, nailing it into the ground. Several more portals appear around the enemy and launch dark energy blades at the enemy causing additional damage. After the the dark energy blades have done their work, Sparda’s blade will fly out of the opponent and back to Sparda. Causes heavy damage, may only be used once a match and uses up a lot of energy. If used against a Ghost type, the attack will be rendered useless should it attempt to spear the ghost in its gaseous form.

Literally a marvel to all, and perhaps one of the weirdest Pokémon in all of the BG PASBL. Her personality couldn't be more impeccable to almost everyone, though she has some weird habit of breakdancing. (In fact, that technique was once used in battle. Scary.) Once, when training with my Xatu, Chopsticks, Natu used its signature move. This caused deep red wings with a span of nearly three feet to sprout from Rocky's body. Rocky, terrified at first, tried to fly, but its incredible weight caused its wings to be rendered useless. I put Onix on an intense diet along with excessive training, and she managed to get much lighter- just over half of an Onix's usual weight. It caused her to be able to fly. This Onix is midnight blue, except for its wings.
Special Training: Type Change (Flying)
With Rocky's new wings, she now sacrifices her Ground type, along with the weaknesses, resistances, and immunities that support the Ground type. In exchange she gains the Flying type, along with weaknesses, resistances, and immunities. She also has the ability to use all Flying attacks, except Aeroblast, Peck, Drill Peck, and Mirror Move. She also gains the attack Steel Wing.

-KO points did not exist yet - you would advance through the levels by having a minimum number of wins (at least 2 for TL2 and 5 for TL3) and TP. Badge requirements started at TL4.

-You would receive six extra slots each time you earned 10 TP from battle, while spending 10 SP would give you three extra slots.

-DQs were enforced... well, not super strictly, but they were a lot more strict than they are now. To paraphrase a bit on the site, "having a life" was not considered an excuse for failing to post.

-This was covered in TO a while back, but yes, breeding in battle was a thing (if Attract worked and both combatants were in the same Egg Group), and there are a few Squads pages that include ASB spawn. Here's an example:

Special Attack: Fire Wool (Fire)
Mareep charges up his wool, and it glows red, as it fills with the power of pure Fire. For the next five turns the coat will be infused with the Fire energy, and should a physical hit be made by the other Pokémon, they will receive a Burn.
-Trading also existed (that and breeding were still allowed for a while after the league moved back to UPN/SPP), but I don't remember any specific trades that happened. Well, besides Undead-Beat having an Alakazam at TL2, which I only remember that because I reffed Stlbk's Dragonair mauling it.

-Each Gym had a couple of unique special rules to make winning more difficult for challengers. These should still be somewhere in the Arenas page on the official site unless somebody cleaned it up, but here's an example which also acts as a (possibly incomplete because I swear there was at least one other GL) list of GLs:

Spoiler: show

Bending the Rules: The Gym Leader assigned for this arena is known to "Bend the rules". Depending on the Gym, certain changes are made to the rules.
(Gossemer Gym) Archaic may use ANY BUG Pokémon from his squad, effectively allowing him to bring in a team of 12 Pokémon to any match, though the amount he may use remains the same. He also does not have to use Pokéballs to send out or return his Pokémon. Finally, Archaic may freely switch his Pokémon at any time (Does not count as KO), and while he may not use items on them, they may heal during the time they rest.
(Burning Spirit Gym) Knobert likes to know what the opposition is going to do. When the match first begins, instead of going through as normal, the challenging trainer must give their squad, pick their first Pokémon and their first attack before Knobert has to pick his squad of 6. Knobert will then send out his first Pokémon and attack. The next round continues with the challenging trainer attacking first, then Knobert, and then it continues as normal. This rule also applies when one of Knobert's Pokémon is knocked out. When this happens, Knobert will only choose his next Pokémon, then the challenging trainer will attack, then Knobert will attack. In the next turn the order will be reversed again as usual.
(Chemical Gym) X-Rok is an employee and has connections with the company, and as such is capable of giving orders to company Pokémon. Any company-owned Pokémon in the area may be called on for assistance, be it to help defend X-Rok's own Pokémon or attack his opponent. He may call for defensive assistance up to 5 times, and order attacks up to 3. Miscellaneous commands, such as arena modification or general movement, may be used up to 5 times as well.
(Shinka Gym) Once per opponent's Pokémon, any of the Eeveelutions used can choose an attack from another Eeveelution. Effectively, they can use any attack in the Eevee family, but only one move can be picked per Pokémon. The move chosen can only be used once per opponents Pokémon. Example: Flareon picks Water Gun, uses it. Can't use it again until the opponent's Pokémon is taken down. When I switch Pokémon, they too can choose a new move, so I could have Flareon with Water Gun, who then gets knocked out, then I could have Espeon with Flamethrower. Etc.
(Limited Moon Gym) While in a Gym or Gym Trainer Match with The Mozz or his Gym Trainers, opponents will feel the force of the Dark energy surrounding the arena, which forbids them to use signature moves, defenses or abilities which must be explicitly directed to the Pokémon. Special Training, Type Changes, and abilities which kick in automatically are still allowed, however.
(Flaming Mind Gym) When Sponge brings his squad to the arena they are all in disguise so the opponent does not know what pokemon sponge has brought to the arena until they are sent out (pokemon will be PM’ed to the ref at the start of the match). Due to sponge’s pokemon being in disguise they will not enter the arena until they see their opponent waiting for them, Making them wait just that little bit longer then making a grand entrance by springing out onto the arena and taking off their disguise.

Speaking of GLs, asking to become a GL would get you blacklisted from ever receiving a position.

-Gym Badges had effects, usually a mild stat increase for the squad (reflecting the games), in addition to allowing the holder to control Pokemon five levels higher than their TL would allow. For example, a TL3 trainer, usually restricted to Lv. 30 and under, would be able to use Lv. 35 and under 'mon with a badge.

-Going back to arenas, the list of available arenas was smaller than it is today, consisting mostly of the basic terrains, gyms from the anime, and a few more complex arenas. Quite a few of the arenas from the current official site's Arenas page come from an Arena Creation Thread from around mid-late '02, where ASBers would submit arena ideas and, upon that arena's approval, receive 1-5 SP based on how "creative" the arena was. That's where your Kuno's Rooms/Nightmare Graveyards/etc came from.

-Eh, this post is long enough and I'm lazy, let's just quote this blurb on legends and be done with it:

Quote:

So that means Articuno, Moltres, Zapdos, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Mewtwo, Mew, Ho-oh, Lugia, and Celebi are off limits for now, and for the forseeable future. Trainers keep their legendary Pokémon until they leave the League, or after a certain number months, whichever is sooner. If the trainer leaves the League, the legendary is released out into the wild again, and left to be taken by someone else. If, however, the number of months equal to the number of legendaries remaining in the wild passes, if another trainer wishes to buy the legendary, they may do so from the trainer who currently owns it. The current owner then has to fight the other trainer 1 on 1, using the legendary. If they win, they keep the legendary, if they lose, the other trainer will buy the legendary. For example, if there were six legendaries still out in the wild, every six months trainers could buy legendaries from those that already have them, however if there were only four legendaries left, the time period would be four months. The only exceptions to these rules are Pokémon given away as prizes, who remain in their trainer's squad (so long as they catch it) until they leave the League. If all the legendaries have been given away as prizes, then no-one else will ever get them, unless their trainers quit the League.

Currently all of the Legendaries are available, apart from Suicune, who is the prize for the 2001 Grand Melee.
-Tournaments could be started with just one simple payment of 15 SP! During the BG Period, there were a few tournaments, only one of which finished: Knobert's Annual Summer Tournament, where Archaic won, Sciz took second place, and oh hell I don't remember who took third place someone help me I want to say it was Pokemonger but I don't know haaaalp. Not too long afterwards, there was (Karate's, I think?) Down for Days tournament, a double-elimination tournament (!) which was still chugging along in its fourth (?) round when BMGf went down. There was also an Inter-Board Tournament between BG and TPM, which I have little recollection of. (It didn't finish anyway, and of the three matches listed in the BG match archive, only Sciz won his match, while Aipom and Knobert both lost.)

-The Grand Melee page didn't get archived, but here's a handy link to a page from Kuno that saved the reffings.

-There was a bit of a role-playing angle to the proceedings at certain points; it's noted in a couple of places that happiness evolutions could be awarded early/denied outright depending on how the trainer treated their 'mon during/after battles, though it is stated that in nearly all cases, evolution will be handled normally. Time Out was mostly role-playing when it started, though after the move to UPN/SPP, it began its extremely slow transformation from being a place to flesh out your squad's personalities to the PASBL/offtopic chat it is today. Going back to evolution, there's even a blurb on how it can be done during battle, though it's terribly vague beyond establishing that it takes a move and is all you can order that round:

Quote:

Of the top of my head, I can only think of one trainer who might have been refused, and he left quite a while ago.

Finally, yes, it is possible to evolve your Pokémon during a battle. It counts as an attack and you cannot do anything else this round but the evolution. When you've evolved your Pokémon, it does not gain any extra health, but it does gain extra energy to fuel its attacks, thanks to its new form. It will also be stronger of course, and able to use extra attacks in many cases.
And that's about all I have about BG. Or can muster up the brainpower to post atm. Bug more higher-ups, that's the ticket.

Hana, that's seriously awesome. Thanks! Set up a link in the OP and also added list of LOs because why not.

You're missing RR, Killy, ABL, and Elsie in your list of LOs.

I probably put Muyo as D cause he didn't have a grade yet and I didn't want to leave it blank.

I'm pretty sure someone had a Scizor via trade and I know someone had a Gengar this way. It might have been me for both of those. You could get them a few TLs earlier, haha.

You and Beaky were always finding ways to exploit the system.

Also I forgot to mention Rabscuttle as an LO, he was excellent as both squad approver and site wizard. Probably #1 or #2 on my list of guys who I would magic back into the league if I could.

There was also fushigidane, who was pretty darn good at squad rejections.

He had access to the LO forum to give input, but I don't think he actually did anything LO-y.

Hey everyone,

Sorry I didn't respond to this thread sooner.

First, shouldn't I still be a Moderator of the PASBL here?

Oh and I'm still your President... emeritus that is.

Anyways, all I remember from my tenure as a LO and President was to make sure the league remained strong and I wanted to make sure the league branched out to Serebii.net to bring in more battling talent from there and to help growth from the forum crossing.

Another thing I believed in was consistency - if something wasn't broke, it didn't need to be fixed. And conflict I never wanted to be a part of - so compromise was important. There were a few minor changes made over my time but the foundation of rules and process of battle didn't change since they were the pieces of the ASB that has worked for so long. I was the statistician for the league as well - is that still being tracked? I see some battles from 2007 on Serebii.net forums that haven't been archived.

I also enjoyed working with each and everyone of you while I was an active participant in the ASB and I just hope I made the league a better place in my time during and after presidency.

Anywho, working on my education while being the President was taking time from battling like I used to. Working part- and now full-time didn't help matters either. I've now worked at the university for over 18 years (man time flies).

Don't forget to prioritize your life young ones. Remember what is important to you and do whatever it takes to make sure those tasks are met daily. Don't forget to ask questions if you need help with anything.

Ron

More or less in that I keep the table updated (save for lately thanks to not really enjoying redoing my work after technical issues), but if battles ever end up actually making it to the archives I think we'd all be in shock. There's not really a need for it, anyway, save for important things like Legend Challenges, Grand Melees, etc.

Also 2000-2004 was never really called Veterans, per se. They were called the Old Guard. Veterans is more a moving title in the opposite manner of Newbies, referring to those who have been around in general for an extended period of time.
