UPN PASBL: Rangeet (c) VS Dave (a) - A Skyborn Duel

So for some reason the requests are flowing in. *shrugs*
Still, moar SP!

Rangeet(c) vs Dave(a)
4 v 4 flying off woo!
Switch = KO
lol DQ
Slapstick
Eyrie arena
Quote:

"A massive area dominated by high cliffs and mountains, with the massive fort of the Eyrie somewhere in the center. The fort is very difficult to destroy, and one cannot go inside it, but the parts of it may be perched on. The weather is quite cold and chilly, but no more than normal."
As you can see from the numbers, today's battle will be fought high in the sky, an exclusive match between Flying-type pokemon- Let the dogfights begin!

It's also worth noting that one of the battlers is my gym boss and the other is my best bro. So. This is going to be... Interesting, for me.

(Newbies, keep your eyes on this match. Not only is this a fight between Dave, the current top dog of the PASBL at Rank #1, and Rangeet, a rising star who's earned himself an Honourable Mention, but as a flying-off, this match shall be taking place entirely in 3D, making it a perfect place to learn how to use your surroundings- or lack thereof- to your advantage.)

Yo Dave? Forgot to ask but can we have Equiall 3 or something? I kind of want Gliscor and not Gligar. I'll put him as Gligar here but if you agree then Gliscor'd be cool.

Lvl 3 F Fearow(Woa Fearow)
Fearow was very, very curious. Much too curious. So curious, she decided a pencil sharpener would be a good thing to stick her beak into. Needless to say,....things...happened, which ended up with her (I think, I can't understand Fearow language) swearing never to stick her beak in strange places again, and with a very sore beak.

However, we found out this beak actually was super-sharp. And boy, it hurt. However, Fearow had to carefully train and must still use extra energy to make sure that too much damage does not happen to her beak.

Special Training: Sharp Beak
All Fearow's beak-based attacks deal 1.5x more damage, but take 1.25x more energy and 1.35x more energy once she goes below half energy(as she is tired, she must concentrate more...thus tiring her more). Additionally, no more than one beak-based attack may be used if a three-mover is ordered, as she is too scared of damage to her beak.

Lvl 4 M Charizard(Kane)
Kane is a demented monster. Also he's extremely weak to rock attacks and nobody likes that. Therefore he trained with Edge for ages(suffering many injuries- my Clefable helped with that) until he got better against them.
Signature Training: GENERIC ROCK TYPES DO NOT HURT ME
Kane takes 300% damage from Rock attacks, not 400%. Lol.

Lvl 3 M Sigilyph(Sphinx)
Lvl 3 M Drifblim(Trilo)
Lvl 3 M Golbat
Lvl 3 M Gliscor(Sting)

Thanks hugely for the opportunity mate.

Pretty sure that Equiall 3 doesn't affect any of my Flyers, so go ahead. I'll post up a squad after work tonight.

Natu

Battling Rangeet with Kin reffing? Why do I have this nostalgic sense of foreboding?

...

Anyway, let's have fun with this Rangeet. Should be a good match with some unique mechanics. I'm quite tempted to bring a team of non-Flyers that can fly but that would be a bit dickish. Though you appear to have left your Aerodactyl somewhere which is an... interesting decision.

Either way, here's my squadron for this dogfight:

Level 3:

Quoth: Male Honchkrow
Honchkrow: (Dark/Flying) - Honchkrow have influence over Murkrow. If Honchkrow is fighting a Murkrow, the Murkrow will be more reluctant to damage it.
Dark-types can see in the dark. They prefer to fight at night, however light does not adversely affect them.
Flying Pokémon, with a few exceptions, all fly. Those who cannot are faster and more agile in their chosen mode of transportation.
Bio: Having woken up after a night camping, I found a few precious things missing. Using Harbinger's sharp nose to find the thief, a Murkrow who had a penchánt for shiny objects. After returning the objects, the Flying-type offered to guide us out of the forest, before asking to come along with us. After capturing him, it was obvious that the Murkrow was both a hesitant battler, and a fan of poetry. Putting him through Vulgaris' boot camp to bolster his confidence, his battling skills improved, though he remained flighty. He also named himself after a poem featuring a creature quite like him, while also using that creature's catchphrase for his own special move. Since evolving, his confidence has gone through the roof thanks to his pimpin' fresh plumage, though he'll still prefer to turn tail against a severely advantaged foe.

Special Attack: Nevermore! (DK):
Quoth can select a non-natural type within the opponent's movepool, cursing them to be unable to use moves of that type similarly to Grudge. This attack follows the Mozz Badge rules, only able to be used on types which the target has between one and four damaging attacks of. The curse takes considerable energy to perform, is only usable once per battle, and lasts for four rounds on average.

Spitfire: Male Mantine
Mantine: (Water/Flying) - Mantine are fish: thus, they are helpless on land but elegant in the water. Fortunately for Mantine, it can glide above the ground, though it is difficult for it to get airborne on the ground.
Water Pokémon are able to hold their breath under water. The time varies, from about half an hour to one hour for reptilians and mammals, and indefinitely for fish and squid like Pokémon. They are also, generally, good swimmers.
Flying Pokémon, with a few exceptions, all fly. Those who cannot are faster and more agile in their chosen mode of transportation.
Bio: Spitfire always did love the air, even if his natural habitat was water. I actually met him at an old air festival, where he was trying to keep up with the planes. Pelly and Quoth flew up alongside him, guiding him back to safety on the ground, though it wasn't as easy for him to land as it was for them, being a fish and all. I offered him a place on the team, and he accepted. While the other Water-types on my team prefer to swim, he usually takes to the air, though he does hate the lack of decent aerial moves he possesses.

Special Attack - Manta Ray (FL):
Spitfire releases this attack from his mouth, which takes the form of a black, shadowy beam of energy. Manta Ray, like Confuse Ray, can have a variable 'spread' of attack. The more widespread it is, the less damage it deals to opponents it hits. At its most focused, it deals Flying damage the strength of Fire Blast, whereas if it is widespread, it deals less damage at the ref's discretion. Manta Ray takes a few seconds to charge, and consumes Flying energy equal to Fire Blast. Spitfire cannot use Confuse Ray.

Hank: Male Gliscor
Gliscor: (Ground/Flying) - Gliscor are not true fliers: instead, they glide. If needed to, however, they are able to fly for short distances, and their claws allow them to grab and climb relatively smooth surfaces. Upon evolving, their claws got quite stronger and attacks that use it are 15% stronger then normal. Gliscor can see in the dark, and fight more enthusiastically at night.
Ground Pokémon are considered to be immune to electricity while standing on the ground. If a Ground Pokémon is in the air, they take 75% the normal damage from electric attacks. If a Ground-type is wet, electric attacks affect it normally (unless the Pokémon is naturally wet/slimy, like Quagsire).
Flying Pokémon, with a few exceptions, all fly. Those who cannot are faster and more agile in their chosen mode of transportation.
Bio: Much as many of my Pokémon are complete nerds when it comes to certain things, we turn to Hank - the resident Simpsons aficionado of the squad. He's spent hours of his life watching the animated yellow people, and is a die-hard fan, shunning others such as South Park and Family Guy. Though he he refuses to admit that The Simpsons went past season 14 and was cancelled there and then rather than go on to become the utter bilge that it has now.
Anyway, it was this very show that named him and gave him his catchphrase. Like many others, he fell in love with the character of international supervillian Hank Scorpio, and seeing an affiliation with his last name, took on his first name. Meanwhile, a side-gag gives him his motto of 'You can run, but you can't GLIDE!', to which end he uses his superior aviation skills to track down and strike opponents attempting to flee.

Special Attack - Hang Glider (GD/FL):
Charging himself with either Ground or Flying energy (specified upon ordering), Hank launches himself at the opponent, tracking their movements and adjusting his flight path to ensure a hit. Upon impact, he manoeuvres and grapples them into a sleeper hold position. Hang Glider deals considerable damage for heavy energy and has a 20% chance of Body Slam style paralysis. This attack is quite difficult to dodge and can be used twice per battle.

Kazooie: Female Fearow
Fearow: (Normal/Flying) - While not as agile as its previous evolution, the large wings of a Fearow make it faster and able to fly longer.
Normal-types can use the greatest variety of attacks in the league: they pay for this, however, by having less type energy. They are resistant to nothing, and are weak to Fighting, taking double damage.
Flying Pokémon, with a few exceptions, all fly. Those who cannot are faster and more agile in their chosen mode of transportation.
Bio: One half of a legendary action duo, Kazooie has put aside her old partner of Banjo (partly because I'm not keen on Ursaring), and been drafted into my ASB squad. Seeing how she hasn't been involved in games for the last decade because there wasn't a Banjo-Kazooie game on the 360, honest there wasn't, she mostly battles out of boredom. Brash, sarcastic, Kazooie isn't one to let her emotions get in the way, mocking her opponents before treating them to a Drill Peck to the face. With most of her special moves already covered in the Pokémon world, she's had to focus on some that are a bit more specialist.

Special Attack - Eggshells (Various):
When ordered, Kazooie fires an egg of energy from her beak at the opponent. Owing to her past training, she has several variations of this move, which are as follows:
Blue: The standard, Kazooie forms a blue egg of Flying energy which hits the opponent for no extra effect.
Fire: This red egg is made of Fire energy, hitting the opponent for a 50% local burn chance.
Ice: A sliver egg of Ice energy, this hits the opponent with a 50% local freeze chance.
Grenade: Much different, a green egg made from typeless energy which explodes on contact, dealing a concussive shock that may disorient the opponent, break barriers and soforth.
All Eggshells deal considerable damage for the same energy, though the Grenade variant costs heavy energy, and must be specified upon ordering. Kazooie's Fire and Ice energies fuel two uses of their respective Eggshells per battle.

Kaepora Gaebora: Male Noctowl
Noctowl: (Normal/Flying) - As an owl, Hoothoot and Noctowl are the quietest fliers amongst Pokémon, and are almost inaudible as they fly. Noctowl can see in the dark.
Bio: Once a major irritation for players of one of the best games of all time, this all-knowing owl randomly swapped universes, materialising in this one as a Noctowl, that being the form most suited to him. With not many people playing Ocarina of Time these days, he happened across me and started to talk. And talk. And talk. He just would not shut up. In order to make him stop, I captured him, which was easy enough, but this didn't curb his talkative nature. He now spends his days flitting around the training site, engaging the rest of the squad in banter, albeit without them getting a word in edgeways. In fact, his ability to talk the arse off a Rapidash has carried over to his battling abilities.

Special Defence - Textwall (FL/PS):
Speaking fast, Kaepora Gaebora uses his mild Psychic powers and Flying energy form his words into the air, which appear swiftly before the opponent. The opponent is compelled to read this, interrupting their current move and possibly enraging them, having a 50% chance to put them into a Taunt-like state. Textwall costs considerable energy, half of each element, and can only be used twice per battle.

Doc: Male Xatu
Xatu: (Psychic/Flying) - Xatu is not the best of fliers. It can see a few seconds into the future, allowing it to avoid attacks more easily. Xatu can hold very still, making it harder to spot if it is hiding.
Psychics are considered to automatically be familiar with psychic abilities. Thus, they can use Psychic to move and toss Pokémon. If facing a non-Bug, non-Dark opponent, Psychics can sense their opponent somewhat, making accuracy reducing attacks less effective.
Flying Pokémon, with a few exceptions, all fly. Those who cannot are faster and more agile in their chosen mode of transportation.
Bio: Doc's a genius. Utilizing his Psychic abilities, he spends most of his time tinkering with gadgets, attempting to make various scientific breakthroughs, but his chief area of study is time manipulation. Being a Xatu, he's always been able to see into the future to predict upcoming events and attacks, and he loves using Future Sight in-battle. The only way he could take this further is by actually travelling through time himself.
Cue lots of study. Eventually, by trying to focus on using Future Sight while using Teleport, he found himself in the future for a short amount of time. Through rigorous training, he managed to stay in this state long enough to take advantage of it.

Special Technique - Timeport:
Doc uses Teleport, which takes him an indeterminate amount of time into the future, anywhere from two to five rounds. He only vanishes for about four or five seconds in the present, reappearing soon after in exactly the same place. When he appears later in the battle, again for about four or five seconds, he appears away from his current location and fires an attack before being sucked back in time. During this time, he is magically invulnerable to damage, as taking some would cause a paradox. Doc has to be ordered 'Timeport, [attack]', before Timeporting into the future, using his attack, and returning minus the attack's energy and considerable energy for the Timeport. Doc can no longer use his normal Teleport or Future Sight attacks, and Timeport can only be used twice per match, but he can't use the second one until the first has been fulfilled. Due to needing full concentration, Doc can't use this move in a hurry or under pressure, and thus can't use it to dodge attacks. Only ranged attacks can be used during Timeport, and only those that deal up to a heavy amount of damage.

Golbat, your turn. Toxic to start off with. If you sense a silver egg coming at you, dodge with Agility, but if all seems to be fine, Sludge Bob-omb.

Round 1: Hoist by his own petard

((I get the feeling Dave is referencing some past failing of mine but I actually can't remember in the slightest. @[email protected]))

The earth far below, two trainers square off. Their footing on the fortress's upper echelons may be precarious, and one of the two may be wearing far too many layers for the situation, but the same commitment to guide their pokemon to victory lies in both their eyes. Two winged figures take to the skies- While the bird appears large, they are quite dwarfed in comparison to their oversized bat of a foe. It takes a moment for the ref to process that someone other than 'geet is using a Fearow, but process it he does, and the battle begins.

The nicknameless Golbat quickly approaches his foe, his huge mouth towering over his foe before he bites down on them, Toxic essences spurting out of his fangs and into the Fearow beneath him. And then... Seeping right back out, the Substitute Kazooie seemingly lacking much in the way of internal organs. Golbat then watches for the gleam of silver, carefully searching for the hue until the bird turns an entirely different colour, a muddy brown aura wrapping around her body as she Drills through her target, the powerful attack giving the Bat a Run for his money. Not to be outdone, Golbat retaliates, a torrent of Sludge spilling from his mouth before morphing into a barrage of Bombs, Kazooie holding a neutral expression as the attack rains down on her. A moment later, the Fearow shatters into a shower of glowing white, her foe looking on in shock as 'Kazooie' ceases to exist. Noting a new presence, he turns to see a free and unmolested Kazooie grinning from behind him. The two face off, ready for their next exchange, the Golbat none too pleased at falling for his foe's trickery.

Golbat is noticeably the worse off of the two, though both have a long ways to go still. Another full Drill Run seems unlikely, but Kazooie certainly isn't out of ground energy yet.

Bide can be used anytime in a matchup, what I'm effectively doing is slightly lowering damage I receive and basically using Hyper Beam on you :p

Round 2: Because WTD needed a replacement

With a flourish, Kazooie sweeps her wings out wide and takes to the skies, a quick application of Newton's Third Law propelling her backwards as she releases a gust of wind at her foe, razor-sharp particles of energy within slicing at her white-clad foe. Golbat simply holds his position, biding his time as he waits for his opportunity. Noting her foe's lack of action, Kazooie lights up, a shower of gold raining onto her opponent, battering his wings and knocking him down, the solid rain continuing on it's merry way, visiting a destructive Pay Day upon the castle far below. But her victory is short lived, as Golbat's white coating shimmers for a moment before exploding outwards, the shocked bird nailed by the resultant colourless beam. Although succesful, this leaves Golbat utterly drained, and he figures now would be a good time to just take a breather.

Both pokemon have lost a lot of health, and it's evident that the first stretch of this matchup may well be over, though Golbat currently holds a significant advantage over his foe. But while he has the upper hand, Golbat seems to be most exhausted, Bide having essentially hit the 'next scene' button on this battle.

Mmm, I was thinking that, due to Bide's recharge clause, but I wasn't certain which way to go with it. Cheerio~

Only if Kind refs ten-second time limits, which I don't know him to, and in my view this falls well within the "WTDTFCSB" limit. After all I "only" used just about two HBs of energy and there's a reason I ordered Supersonic and not Confuse Ray. Obviously it's his decision but you don't automatically not get to attack just because you used a very high energy move, also I imagine increasing total energy also increases short-term tiredness limits.

However, I would probably RNG it working and I have possibly the loosest time limits among ASB refs so.

Well, that was fun! Supersonic and Swift, please.

Well yeah, but Bide's a more special case since it usually ends up tiring the user. Using an attack straight after it when the opponent is never able to act is, as you've mentioned, harking back to the old WUIDTFCSB days, which are a bad thing.

"Quickly Uproar over that Supersonic, then fire off an Ice Eggshell.

Round 3: Sonic Warfare

Golbat decides to do what his species does best, a super-high pitched sonic note travelling over the arena inflicting headaches in those that hear it. Until those headaches are swiftly cured by an utter uproar, Kazooie's counterattack throwing glowing blue rings into the deal. Golbat isn't pleased with being so utterly countered, and makes his move, a flurry of golden stars swiftly rushing from the large space between his mandibles and striking his airborne foe. But Kazooie doesn't seem too phased by this development, and takes advantage of her superior position to summon up energy into a glowing egg, the eggshell glittering like cleanest ice, before lobbing the attack down towards her opponent. Golbat makes to try and avoid the ranged move, but the attack crashes down onto his wing, the affected area icing over. Golbat shrieks once more, but this one is in fear rather than as a form of attack as his flight is disrupted and he plummets towards the fortress below.

Both are fairly par, Kazooie just above the midpoint while Golbat is just below. The energy gap has closed quite well, though both fighters seem fairly tired and would like a break. I'm fairly certain that Golbat has more urgent things to worry about, though.

Having used a 2HB Bide last round, I'm pretty sure Golbat should be a bit more tired, but that's just my thoughts.

Consider the size of Golbat.

Then consider the size of an egg.

Then consider exactly how big the area of freezing would need to be for Golbat to be unable to fly, period.

Also Kin didn't say that the entire wing is frozen, just that enough of it is to cause him to lose some flight ability. All it would take is a bit of the membrane to freeze and lose flexibility before his flight gets affected enough.

The reffing's implying Golbat can't fly at all and is crashing down.

Yeah, googling size, I guess Golbat's only impaired, not the loltailspin I originally stated. Sorry, all!

I am confused because you've agreed with Rangeet yet linked to a series of images showing quite large eggs.

Well, yeah, they are big.

But, well. Really big.

Basically before I had Golbat's wing as mostly frozen and so he couldn't even keep airborne, while now it's more can't-really-fly-but-isn't-about-to-crash-and-burn.
