Lapras The Unofficial ASB Whirl Cup Thread!

Yesterday, a certain someone who just happens to be a Swordsman of a distant world suggested a fabulous idea. Not wanting for it to die, I have taken it upon myself to promote it. So here's the proposal:

an ASB Whirl Cup!

For those of you not in the loop, the Whirl Cup was an arc in the Pokémon anime during the Johto season. The Whirl Cup itself took place on the Whirl Islands between Route 40 and 41. It was a cup that looked like your average tournament, except the only Pokémon allowed where those of the Water type. But there are some issues to be solved:

-How many people could join? This also goes it the fact of what kind of tournament format. Round Robin? Knockout? Etc.?
And on that note, who? Will this be limited to UPN, where stuff gets (mostly done), or carrying it across both forums, were newbs and n00bs alike get a shot? Will there be a TL requirement? A SP submission that will go to the winnings?

-The Pokémon. An issue was raised about how certain Pokémon *cough*Lanturn *cough*Ludicolo *cough*, would have a clear advantage over the others.
But randomly assigning Pokémon might drastically lower odds, or whatever the exact quote is. Nonetheless, this issue must be remedied.

-Stats. This should be an easy one to figure out, but opines should be heard. 3v3 singles? 4v4 doubles? More than that? And because ASB's so wonderfully creative, who said we have to stick the original arena? It could be a platform in the middle of the ocean, under da sea, alongside a giant waterfall, the possibilities are endless.

-Winnings! Who doesn't like winning? It's the only thing that matters after all. I believe for a job well done, after many battles and hardships, that the winner be rewarded. But what will it be? A sum of SP? Additional slots of the battling and or Pokémon kind? Free shots at gym leaders or dare I say, chances at legendaries?

And of course, this isn't all the troubles that need to be shot. Like the puns and references. Feel free to add, or subtract, and come together to make this work!

Like I said in the TO, there's still a good chance that once the Pokébowl finishes, we'll be doing something a lot like this.

I think, though, that we'll be banning Ludicolo, Lanturn and Rotom-W straight up, though.

Well, no. Since every water type resists water moves meaning that this is gonna take a while in many scenarios, why not just turn off type charts? Nothing resists, nothing is super effective.

If's it's a Hidden Squad, surely we don't need to ban any Pokemon? Lanturn, Wash Rotom, and Ludipineapple are great water counters in general, sure, but there are waters who are, in turn, great counters to them, such as any Water/Ground on the former two, and things like Pelipper, Qwilfish, and Surskit have many tools against the latter. If we're going to ban Pokemon in it due to advantageous typing, we may as well just make it pure-water only.

justmytwocents.jpeg

As for format, I'd say either single or double elimination for the first couple (2-3) rounds, 1v1 Singles, then once we reach a top 8 or so, 2v2 matches to decide the rest, either Singles or Doubles, the latter of which would be my own preference. Possibly, once the top two is reached, the final battle could be a slightly larger one (such as 3v3 Singles), but it could be problematic if one or more in the top two only have one Water-type. Perhaps a rental system to cover the difference if one gets that high, such as them getting RNG'd a rental Pokemon? I do not know. I do know I would prefer Hidden Squad, and the banning of switching moves, to make it more equal.

Or course, considering the time of year, I was going to suggest a Delibird tournament, where the winner gets to keep the one they used.

I think it would be best if you banned the use of Grass attacks and Electric attacks as well, since there are a looooooot of Water/Rocks and Water/Grounds. lol disregard me i post too late to see things above me

Also, Masquerain Y/N?

I actually really like Kush's suggestion. I think it would be a really neat thing to try.

Also in favor of Kush's idea. I see a lot more strategy then just "wait a round then typespam."

I mean in fairness that should probably be an optional rule across the board. Suddenly every pokémon is useful.

It also promotes speed without speeding things up too much.

This idea is fantastic and should feel fantastic.

In other news, Kush's idea is probably the best way to go about doing this. That way everyone has an equal shot and it will be decided purely be strategy.

I like Kush's idea, but I think we should start this tourny (if it happens) soonish, rather than waiting until 2014 for the 2011 Pokebowl to finish.

Wait.

Something I suggested.

May actually happen? That's a first.

This was the reason the thread started. Why I didn't mention this earlier, I don't, really know.

I have to ask, how does the "only waters allowed" rule matter if we're removing type charts entirely? I quite like the idea, just seems odd to apply it to this tournament.

It's a theme tourney, but if it happens at all it'll be a minitourney.

>Starting it before the Pokebowl ends

Eh, no, I really don't like having two running at once. Things need to be sorted out anyways so it'll be a ways out regardless.

It's just for thematics.

Also it makes a good excuse for using beautiful water arenas.

Can we have a flying-only tourney afterwards?

I was thinking the same thing, actually. I don't like the turning off the type chart idea. In my mind, you get RNG'd a Pokemon and you're stuck with it. Adds an element of luck which makes it interesting.

It's stupid when you use it for a Gym, especially when you add in 100 weird rules that change the battle between singles and doubles every other round.

The awkward moment when Dave gets RNGed a Magikarp and Noob#595 gets a Lanturn...I hate the idea of, say, the final, coming down to RNGing pokemon.

Love the no type chart idea, would suggest no higher than 2v2 matches. Prize could be a free water pokemon of the winner's choice, or that for second place and the winner gets a FWP of their choice with a slightly stronger sig written by LOs?
