Disney is pretty excellent at restoring old films, as well as preserving them without changes through the ages. I think if you want Jabba-less, Han shooting first New Hope action there's not a film studio that would be more likely to give it to you than Disney.

I read loads of Star Wars expanded universe books as a teenager. Talon, I also thought the Han Solo trilogy were some of the best ones ever made. But, the single best expanded universe story I read was "The Last One Standing", a short story about Boba Fett that was in the book "Tales of the Bounty Hunters". This story had a fairly large influence on me as a middle schooler, and Boba Fett became my idol for a little while. Many years later, I found out that they actually retconned this story so that the guy in it was a completely different person than the real Boba Fett. Which is insanely idiotic, because it was pretty much the best back story you could possibly ask for.

Does this inspire confidence?

Frankly, I want to see how ITD plays out before judging, but it makes me a teeny bit less anxious.

And then there's its sequel

Star Wars Episode Super 8. But all in all, I'm still reserving judgment until after it's released into theaters.

So J.J.'s fronting both the Star Trek and the Star Wars franchise?

He must be living every nerd's dream right now, I just hope Trek and Wars don't become indistinguishable.

All we need now is for Disney to purchase Hanna-Barbera and then ...

The Jetsons Meet the Flinstones Meet Star Wars Meet Star Trek, a.k.a. Star Wars: Generations.

Nah, jokes aside what you say is true. Nerds have long joked and quibbled about Star Wars vs. Star Trek, so it's pretty crazy and amusing to see the same man at the helm of both franchises simultaneously.

I don't see why people are upset. Abrams is a great director and Star Trek 09, although a reboot, was really, really good.

Yeah, I'm aware, but I don't get why it matters. It's not like he'll mix the lore up or anything, yes, Trek and Wars have long been rival franchises, but I just don't see the point in why people are dreading the SW7 now because of it. It just seems dumb.

I've seen a lot of trekkies and star wars fans on reddit both express how upset the news made them. If the guy can make a good movie and has that reputation behind him, especially in terms of space adventures... why can't people just shrug this off?

I guess I just don't understand the fanboy logic at being upset at this.

I like both Trek and Wars and this news actually makes me feel better.

Internet fandoms in having inexplicable reactions shocker.

You make it sound like Fandoms are logical.

Effectively Star Wars and Star Trek have had two very different styles. Star Wars was simply an adventure in space while Star Trek was more scientific and thought provoking. The fact that the director of one will now be doing the other kind of makes people worry that Star Trek will just become another "lame action adventure," although JJ already did that with the reboot.

Note that I don't actually care for it. Star Wars has been dead to me since SW Special Edition and Star Trek has been dead since they started Star Trek Voyager.

I wasn't under the impression Abram's Star Trek was necessarily good? I seem to recall it being a plothole-filled generic action flick, that managed to piss off a lot of the fanbase due to stuff like Spock x Ahura?

It was good but different and completely not faithful to the "technological/sci-fi" quality of ST:TOS. It was a Star Wars film in the Star Trek setting, but what really allowed it to breath was Abrams side-stepping Trek continuity to do what he wanted.

Abrams has a greater challenge with this new film, because he's going to be glued down by Lucas' crusted jizz and his film history suggests he's poor at writing beyond the first act, or with satisfying finality.

He will have to step up his game for the new Trek film and SW if he's to make us forget Lucas' cinematic war crimes.

Abrams is pretty good at what he does; this may actually be a Star Wars film I can actually watch and finish for once.

Although, food for thought: Bad Robot works are supposed to all take place in the same universe (such as the Dharma Logo in the opening parts of Cloverfield, and, if I remember right, the logo also showed up in ST2009), so with them heading this, it could mean that the new Star Trek continuity is the distant future of the Star Wars canon.

Cue outrage by fandumb.

New Star Wars film yearly from 2015

Disney has said a new Star Wars film will appear yearly from 2015, alternating between new episodes in the space saga and spinoff character films.
Not sure if want. I mean both existing trilogies came out with three-year gaps (77/80/83, 99/02/05) which seemed good (though I was only around for the prequels). But yearly? I'd say they can do like the Tolkien films but they were all filmed together. If the first one's due out in two years then that doesn't give a lot of filming time for the rest of them.

That said if they alternate the casts I suppose it's doable. Marvel's doing pretty well out of that format with Disney at the helm.

God that sounds so terrible. They literally want to make Star Wars the Call of Duty of Hollywood. That is literally fucking stupid and will kill the franchise, even if it means big bucks in the short term, depending on how long they do it for.
