Hmmm.

Modern Ms. Marvel
Spoiler: show

BTW: I think this is the best image of Ms. Marvel.

New Ms. Marvel (Captain Marvel)
Spoiler: show

This is the best one I could get (she literally just debuted with his outfit)

Not sure I'm digging the new look.

The second one looks a little mannish. I've seen worse in that department (much worse ... and unibrowed! >_<), but that is my general feeling about the picture. Hair length, facial features and shape, thighs, abs, arms, the whole shebang. The new one's artstyle also looks like a throwback to 1980s comic artwork. The top one looks a lot more ... well, as you yourself labeled it, modern!

Hah. Despite using the word Modern, she's had the outfit for over 35 years now. And that image of her black outfit really is possibly the best one I've ever seen. Big props to David Yardin.

Her new outfit is a bit of a throwback at her original basis: Captain Marvel, whose mantle she has now taken since he died some... oh jeez 30 years ago.

But yeah. Some panels of her new comic she looks like a man. Others are beautiful. It is from a new artists, Dexter Soy who was hired after Marvel found his fanart and were impressed. I guess I'll just have to grow accustomed to it. I mean, she's had her last costume longer than I've been alive, and I guess I don't like change.

Her 'modern' costume bothers me so much, like why is there nothing on her shoulders and her thighs, and why does she have a boob window other than with the express purpose of sexualising her. I vastly prefer the newer version.

Her original outfit was arguably worse by that regard. Unfortunately sex appeal is something that's hard to balance, especially with shifting morals and styles. You have keep a character good looking without going overboard like certain.... girls. Honestly, I always thought of Ms. Marvel's outfit as a kind of Gymnast Leotard with long gloves and thigh high boots. Sure it's sexy, but not insanely. And there are considerably worse characters with boob windows.

Actually, now that I think about it, Ms. Marvel's previous costume looks a lot like Psylocke's outfit, except black and with a lightning bolt. They even both have sashes!

You're thinking of the cartoon and early 90's Ms. Marvel back when Rogue can fly and had super strength on top of her life drain mutant abilities. In both cases I think, definitely in the cartoon anyway, Rogue just put Ms. Marvel into a coma state and then repressed the memory so she forgot how she got those powers to begin with and how they became permanent. I have no idea what happened in the comics or what even happened then is still considered what happened now since the major comic companies are so Retcon/Reboot happy these days.

Rogue did drain Ms. Marvel into a coma and kept her powers for quite a while. Ms. Marvel still has trouble with connecting with her past because of the drain.

Rogue has since lost Ms. Marvels powers though. She had reached a point where she absorbed so many memories, she could no longer function and was comatose herself. She was then revived by Hope Summers by some divine touch (she's the Mutant Messiah ~_~ ). Now Rogue no longer has Ms. Marvel powers but has considerably better control over her abilities, allowing for even non-lethal power absorption and even turning off her powers momentarily. She can also 'recall' some powers she has absorbed without touching the person again and even mix powers, although I think this was added before she reset.

While I would like to say retcons weren't common... they totally are.

One More Day/Brand New Day is probably the most recent and cringe worthy. Especially since the objective was to bring Spidey back to his roots as a penniless hero. Yet in recent comics, he's like rich! He lost his wife, his future daughter, his marriage, and all memory of those things just to add a few more years to old and ailing Aunt May and so they could undo the whole "Spider-man revealed himself on Civil War!" Note: That was possibly the best part of Civil War too!

Actually the most recent retcon/reboot is what is happening now in Marvel called Marvel Now. Basically, marvel is resetting/remoddeling things so the comics can look more like the movies. Tony Stark is going to get even more RDJ'd, Captain America's costume is being redesigned to look more like the movie suit, the original first class X-Men are uprooted from time and are in the current day marvel world and I have no idea what that really means for the current x-men, Nick Fury has either died or gone missing and is being replaced by his secret son that he fathered with a black woman to create Nick Fury Jr: Samuel L Jackson model with his friend Phil Coulson as backup, and yes, that's the regular Marvel Universe, not the Ultimate Marvel Universe that already had a black Nick Fury.

Yeah, comics are now being directed by their big budget movies, not the other way around anymore.

Marvel says that this isn't a reaction to DC's New 52 initiative, but everyone with 2 working brain cells know better. All of this history resetting, backpeddling to appeal to mass consumer movie going markets, and promotional stunts have largely put me completely off of most major American comic books.

Yeah I saw that about Smallville, though I can't say I'm reading the comics. Don't quite understand the need to make Barbs Nightwing, but it could be really interesting. I'm hoping they don't focus on the Batman franchise though, Smallville only really worked when it was about Clark. When they brought in other DC heroes, I generally felt it fell down in quality.

Deadpool and Nightcrawler are both awesome.

I guess 2011/2012 is the years of Reboots. Seems all the brands basically had one. Top Cow following Artifacts, DC following... the purchasing of Wildstorm... and now Marvel after Avengers vs X-Men.

A friend showed me these and I figured I'd pass them along to you guys. There was, apparently, a Batman artwork exhibit and the exhibit operator's friend submitted these two pieces drawn in the Japanese woodblock style of the Edo period, ukiyo-e. They're labeled here as "Sengoku Batman," sengoku referring to the Japanese Warring States period which preceded the Edo period. Click the pictures to see them in full size.

It's going to be odd how they handle Batman in Smallville considering Oliver Queen / Green Arrow was pretty much taking that rule of Billionaire Playboy / Lawless Vigilante and Clark's Foil. I think he's back in Star City but I'm not entirely sure of that. Haven't read since issue 4. I am OK with other Hero's though as long as it isn't Stargirl or Black Canary because I think they did them pretty craptasticly. AC was cool. Cyborg was interesting. Pretty much the original 5 Justice League were alright in my eyes.

I hope Young Justice comes back on soon. I love that show =[

While Marvel is the popular subject now though, anyone watch The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Hero's or Ultimate Spider-man? I seen one...just ONE episode of Ultimate Spider-Man and thought it was pretty legit. Harry Osborn was pretty much Venom for the episode and Peter Parker had to try and save him and all that jazz and some form of the avengers (JV Team of them it looked like) were in the episode.

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is probably one of Marvel's best cartoon renditions of their comic. Unfortunately the current season is also their last, opting for a newer Avengers cartoon to be handled by the same production studio which is doing Ultimate Spider-Man. Marvel said it's mostly because of AEMH was made before Disney bought them so they have to hire outside studios and by making a new series, they can connect it to Ultimate Spider-Man's universe. But the next Avengers series I've heard seems to be just a cartoon aftermath of the Avenger's movie. I'm not sure I'm liking that idea. AEMH was pretty faithful to the comics, so hearing it's replacement is based off the movies is a bit annoying.

They had a petition to save the show, but I doubt Disney or Marvel will since the only real factor is $$.

Ultimate Spider-Man is okay. It does capture a bit of Spidey's wit and humor, but I don't like that he's doing it by breaking the 4th wall. That's not Spidey! That's Deadpool! I'm also not liking his "SIGN ME UP FOR SHIELD!" and then when he's in SHIELD, he complains about it. Really? He just can't make up his mind. The show is extremely childish at times, but it's not horrific like Super Hero Squad.

So Cartoon Network just decided to postpone the DC Nation block of cartoons (Young Justice and Green Lantern: The "CGI" Animated Series" until January out of the blue. Luckily for me I have the season pass on iTunes for Young Justice and they gave me the episode for download that they abruptly canceled on Saturday morning 10/13 for Jan.

Beware the Batman is also coming out next year on CN. Katana is going to be Batman's sidekick and they're going to use Anarky and Professor Pyg and main mob villians which I don't find interesting at all to be honest. I'm okay with splitting the story lines from the comics but make it more like the Nolan's Batman movies and less like making something from scratch.

I have to say that that sounds like a horrible idea, especially the idea of trying to make things more like their cinematic adaptions. I think that cartoon versions of comics tend to work better when they try something new as well as taking inspiration from the comics.

I'm not saying make it like their cinematic adaptations but have the story's make sense like their cinematic adaptations are, at least in terms of character. Most of the characters in the Nolanverse intrigue me even if they do not follow that closely to their comic counterparts. The way they did Robin in 'The Dark Knight Rises' was done well and I'm a Dick Grayson guy myself.

Professor Pyg and the Circus of Strange (did I get that right?) are some messed up folks, I just can't see them doing them right unless they do ala Joker from BTAS. At that point it's a rehash though, so I don't know. Anarky will be the main antagonist as well. Don't know much about him except that he was a prominent part of the 90's Batman villains but is still lesser known which is what BtB is trying to accomplish. You could say the same thing when they introduced Mr. Freeze to BTAS and totally rehashed his old character. So much that that's how they used him in the comics and movies from what I can tell. So I can see both sides to the argument of using lesser knows.

Teen Titans Go! and Beware the Batman are scheduled for 2013 release. I'm going to say after Green Lantern and Young Justice finish their seasons. That's my own assumption though.

Haven't posted here in a while. Been a bit busy.

Firstly: Marvel Now, some of it is good, some of it is bullshit, but not nearly as bad as I feared.

All New X-Men is surprisingly good. I found myself at the end of each issue wishing the new issue was out already so I could read it.

Uncanny X-Force got rebooted to 1 after Marvel Now and it's started off a bit odd. Well, that ending of that first issue was odd. The rest is fine.

Secondly, big news on Spider-Man. It's weird. Also a major spoiler if you didn't know.

Spoiler: show
He's dead... sorta.

Yeah. So Peter Parker is technically dead. Doctor Octopus, dying and on his death bed requested one last talk with Spider-Man. He obliged and Doc Ock used a Mind Swapping device. Now Peter was trapped in a dying body and his oldest villain was running around in his body. Eventually Peter, as Doc Ock got some villains to help break him out and then found Spider-Man and tried to re-swap, but it didn't work. The Doc put a mind lock so the same two people couldn't re-swap. Before he could convince anyone of the problem and get any help, Docter Octopus' body began to fail. Then Spider-man (with the mind of Doctor Octopus) was suddenly struck by Peter's memories. As he watched his own body die and his nemesis die with it, he vows to keep his legacy of Great Power Comes Great Responsibility shit that Uncle Ben taught Peter. Peter's mind then dies in DocOck.

Seriously WTF. Craziest shit ever. Very mixed emotions about this. It's a nice twist to same old Spidey, but it's so batshit crazy. And of coarse, knowing the industry, they'll fix it in like a years time somehow. With magic.

I forget where I heard about that, but yeah, the Spider-Man spoiler is pretty crazy. And I agree that they're bound to work around it somehow. "It only happened in that universe / timeline." Or ...

Spoiler: show
Perhaps they'll say that Peter had a similar experience to Doctor Octopus. Doc Ock's memories bubbled to the surface in Peter's brain, too, and it allowed him to clone his mind into someone or something else. (Be it a computer, be it an animal, be it another person, whomever/whatever.) And so while that copy of Peter Parker's mind died trapped inside of Doctor Octopus's body, there are still 100% identical (or 99.99999999999% identical, whatever floats your boat) copies of Parker's mind out there in the world, just waiting to be swapped back into his original body. As for where Doc Ock will have to go, I guess he'll just have to go wherever Parker is currently hanging out, be that cyberspace, be it inside of a dog, be it wherever.

Pretty silly though either way. I'm sure it'll spawn a lot of ...

Spoiler: show
"Doc Ock bangs hot female associate of Peter Parker's while she thinks he's still Peter" porn stories. I wouldn't know the first thing about Western comics pr0n as I generally hate and avoid it, but I can say that bodyswap hentai is not a rare fetish (not the commonest of fetishes either but certainly common enough), so I would not be the least bit surprised if what works for hentai fans works for Western comic pr0n fans too.

Clone Saga is one of those messes caused by change of staff. One group of writers starting the ground work and then getting canned, followed by new staff who pick up the pieces and made garbage.

In 2009, Tom DeFalco and Howard Mackie redid the clone saga and it was considerably better.

Not sure what this mess is about.

I'm sure many of you who would be interested already know this, but the Young Justice has been cancelled come end of the season (just a handful of new episodes left). I'm quite unhappy about this, since the plot started to get so much thicker before the cancellation was announced. There's been an online petition to keep it going, but it's doubtful they will listen (I believe it had about 20k signatures or so a couple weeks back, no idea how many they might have now). It really disappoints me especially because I am a fan of the Blue Beetle and seeing him as a major character in a DC show has been a rare treat. As well, given recent developments with
Spoiler: show
Virgil Hawkins
it seems unlikely that they will be able to tie up the story with sufficient levels of awesome from said fan-favourite hero. As well, it had been a couple episodes since we had any idea what's currently going on with
Spoiler: show
Kaldur, M'Gann, and Artemis
, which would be more understandable, after all, it is a huge ensemble cast, if it wasn't presented as so dramatic and urgent last we saw, with some obvious time passage since.

Oh, well. They made something good and it looks like it's been network-screwed. It is Cartoon Network doing the block, after all.
