Cyndaquil Throughout Our Travels

Welcome to my thread here in the Visionary Glade. I suppose its purpose is pretty self-explanatory, so I'll just say that I'd appreciate it if no one else posted here. Thanks!

An abandoned book lies closed on a secluded tabletop in an out-of-the-way cafe. With a well-worn blue cover and creases in the spine, it looks to be a much-loved and frequently-perused book, which makes it odd that the owner appears to be nowhere in sight. A gust of wind flips the front cover open and a line of text on the inside reads, Property of Melissa. If found, please return to the Fizzy Bubbles Administration. On the other page appears to be a table of contents.

Trainer Battle Records:
-My Cyndaquil (Wildfire) vs. takkupanda's Growlithe (Broly); Lost in 7 rounds
It was a really close match. Marcelo just...happened to have the stronger Pokemon at the time. Next time, we'll make sure we get him. In the meantime, we need to continue training, though I'm sure having more trainer battles would help.
-My Aron (Mar) vs. Pest's Duskull (Trivia); Won in 13 rounds
...Well, it certainly could have gone better. I mean, we won, but it took a long time 'cause Mar only had a few attacks that could actually hit the Duskull and I had him use up all his Shadow Claws in the first few rounds. And, it was really close near the end, what with that Duskull pulling out a Focus Blast at the last second, but we squeaked by, thanks to those Hardens in the beginning and all the damage we dealt out. Next time, Potions. And a larger movepool would be nice, too.
-My Houndour (Prince) vs. Pest's Kadabra (Minerva); Won in 3 rounds

Phantom Isle Adventure

Unnamed Phantom Isle Adventure
SPPf | PikaGod/Food Guy Sneezey12/Sneasel12 | Fortune Teller's Tent
1 | 2 | 3 | 4

It started off well enough, I guess, but things went downhill pretty quickly. Wildfire and I had decided to go to the Fortune Teller's Tent 'cause it sounded like the safest place out of all the others, with all their spirits of dead kids and crazy rides and whatever. It was a little weird that there was still a light from her tent and that she was able to respond to my thoughts and that she sounded much younger than she looked, but it was still bearable, y'know? Then the crystal ball exploded and became a portal and, well, I just had to go into it. Damned curiosity.

Anyway, while I was in that portal, I saw the fortune teller again and she was suddenly all down-to-earth and condescending and stuff and then my body started to freeze up. I blacked out and the next thing I knew, I was in this giant dollhouse thing and I really don't like human-like dolls. Creepy things they are.

So, I came here looking for a bird to catch, but it seems like Nature's conspiring against me. Well, I suppose I can't blame it all on Nature 'cause Luck's got a hand or two in my bad luck. See, this is what happened:

I took the Adventure Path 'cause a lot of bird Pokemon were reported to be seen there, and I did see a lot of them, but I, uh, wasn't quite paying attention to the path and I ended up tumbling down the cliff/hill thing. It wasn't completely my fault; I'd told Wildfire to help me keep an eye on the path, but I guess he decided to look up at the flying Pokemon at that exact moment and I hadn't stopped walking, so...yeah.

Anyway, after I took that tumble, I checked myself and Wildfire over to make sure we weren't too hurt and found that I'd hit my leg pretty hard on the way down. I had no idea whether it was broken, but I figured it was probably better to treat it as broken than not; besides, it hurt to put weight on it.

That wasn't the only problem, though. In the distance, I could hear a storm coming and I really didn't want to get sick on top of having an injured leg, so I ended up asking Wildfire to help me find something to walk with and somewhere to hide out, too. We eventually found this little cave thing in the side of the cliff and not a moment too soon, too, 'cause as we headed for that cave thing, it started raining. After checking the place out to make sure we weren't trespassing, we hid out there for a while.

Then, we started hearing chirping coming from further inside the cave, so I asked Wildfire to check it out. He came back and told me that there was some sort of battle going on inside the cave, but I decided not to check it out. One, I had a broken leg; I wouldn't be able to run if something came at me or if they happened to bring the cave down around us. Two, it was safer here near the front of the cave and more peaceful; we could still see the entrance from where we were, but the wind and the rain couldn't get to us. And we could hear it raining.

Of course, the storm ended up blowing a trio of Pidoves into the cave and they decided it was a smart idea to use Echoed Voice inside a cave. That was a little painful, to be honest, but they eventually stopped. Wildfire was oddly concerned about them, so we decided to go make sure they were fine. The one that we found on the way to the Pokemon battle was fine and we pointed it towards the exit, but the other two had ended up interrupting that Pokemon battle that we'd heard earlier and had handicapped the trainer against the...Boldore, I think it was. Anyway, she asked us to help her, so we did.

Well, there's not much to say about this one. I felt the urge to look for an Electric Pokemon, so I decided to visit Cascadia's Ion Island. Then, I heard about Storm Lake and immediately chose it as my destination. Wildfire and I ended up racing to the lake's edge and then we met a Ranger who went by Cam. He told us that they weren't getting many visitors as of late, which was really weird because the lake was absolutely beautiful.

So...well, I'm not quite sure why we came here, except I'd heard about the new dam and I wanted to see if for myself. The thing was huge, like enormous, but it made Wildfire uncomfortable, which is understandable; he's a Fire Pokemon and water's his weakness, of course he'd be uncomfortable. That and I'm not entirely sure he can swim...

Anyway, we went down to the river that was coming from the dam and there was this guy who looked familiar. I felt like I should have recognized him, so I decided to ask him and honestly, I can't believe I didn't remember. Who else is known for having a Luxray, for God's sake? Well, he was being a bit of an ass, so I was gonna go see if I could find something else to do when the dam just screeched to a stop. Literally.

I myself wasn't quite sure I should be interfering with such a gigantic mechanical construction, but Volkner had done almost a complete one-eighty, personality-wise. It was a little unnerving, to be honest, but he was much friendlier now that something was happening and he pretty much offered me the chance to help him. How could I refuse?

The only problem was I had no Pokemon that could run alongside his Luxray, but there was a herd of Blitzle and Zebstrika that had been drinking from the river earlier. Volkner suggested I take one of those, saying they didn't have to be captured to be ridden, so I sent Wildfire out to start the battle. Sometime during the battle, though, Wildfire used a Flame Charge, instead of a Flame Burst, which was a little disorienting for me; how did he even learn Flame Charge in the first place?

Well, it didn't quite matter, but he had gotten paralyzed and it had gotten pretty close; both Pokemon were really beat up by this point. I'd decided by now that I might as well have that Blitzle, considering how much effort we'd already put in to weakening it, so when its leg buckled, I threw a Pokeball at it. And I caught it! It was awesome, even if Wildfire was absolutely exhausted by the effort. I ended up naming her Storm and then we headed off for the dam, only a little behind Volkner.

We made it to the bottom of the dam really quickly and Volkner stared at the thing for a good few minutes, so when he spoke again, we jumped a little; Storm was decidedly unimpressed. Once he finished talking, he hurried up to the top and we followed, only a little slower. About half-way up, Storm decided she'd complain about the steep hill, but I made sure she knew I wasn't having any fun either; she didn't complain again.

When we made it to the top, it turned out that the culprit was only a colony of Bidoof and Bibarel. I, for one, was relieved it wasn't anything worse; Volkner, on the other hand, was bitterly disappointed. He actually started complaining that there wasn't anything more exciting for him to deal with, and then, shoved the responsibility for solving the situation to me. I actually considered not doing it and making him do it, since he was saying that it was so simple "a preschooler and his Magikarp could" fix it, but I figured I might as well just deal with it. For all I knew, he could end up throwing a tantrum if I made him deal with it, like my four-year-old sister did once. Or, more likely, kick my ass off the dam.

Anyway, it was a pretty good thing that I was able to get Stream from Noriko before this occurred because it certainly made my life much easier. I just sent him out and asked him to use Water Gun to try to clear the dam. He nodded and was able to clear it all up and escape from the turbine's current, but a crack! from the Bidoof/Bibarel dam had a log drifting towards the dam with a terrified Bidoof clinging to it. Volkner actually did something and sent out his Lanturn to save the Bidoof, but something weird happened.

The dam started buzzing--y'know, that buzzing sound that tells you that something's really charged? Yeah, like that--and then it let out this huge lightning bolt skyward. That wasn't all, though; all the Electric Pokemon started acting weird. Storm reared up and I fell off of her; Volkner's Luxray got up and roared, letting Volkner's head hit the ground (serves him right); and his Lanturn stopped pushing the Bidoof to safety! So, I had Stream save the Bidoof with a Surf, which was a little painful to watch, 'cause he ended up getting hit by the log, but the Bidoof was fine.

Stream, though, was not. I'd forgotten about the turbine current when I'd told him to save the Bidoof, so he got stuck in it again and, this time, he was exhausted. He ended up getting sucked into the turbine and I absolutely could not believe it. I thought he was dead. Sliced up into little pieces and washed away, never to be seen again. I felt terrible. No, miserable. Depressed. I'd sent him back into that current because I'd forgotten about it and now he was gone forever. I didn't even care that the dam had sent out a lightning bolt because I'd lost a Pokemon within my first year of adventuring. What kind of trainer did that make me?

Eventually I came back and Volkner suggested we check out the dam's internal workings to see if Stream was still there, since Fish Pokemon apparently tended to get sucked in. He also wanted to make sure the dam would be fixed and commented that it would probably be dangerous, so I guess he got his adventure after all. Anyway, we headed down to the generators inside the dam and there was a three-way fork there, so he headed left and I headed right. Wildfire and I ended up in front of a password-locked door, but a clue on the blueprints gave me the password.

Wildfire actually chose to come here, seeing as I've been making most of the choices so far; I felt it was fair, since I'd dragged him to a haunted amusement park and a reservoir. He wanted to spend some time with our newest member, too, so I sent out Imp and the two ran off down the obsidian sand to go exploring.

I hadn't been planning on getting into too much trouble here, but Luck was apparently still having fun with me: I ended up stumbling across a...Lufenian?...ritual staff thing mostly buried in the sand. I dug it out with Wildfire's help and this Cid Maple guy comes up out of nowhere to tell me as much about it as he can. He looks like an archaeologist and, after I asked a few questions, he mentioned this other organization that was also looking for the artifact I'd found.

Meeting Melissa and Wildfire

The Child and her Cyndaquil
"Melissa, meet Wildfire."

In a forest clearing on the side of a route in Johto, a ten-year-old girl ran around, pretending to adventure with her own Pokemon. She would speak to an imaginary Pokemon sitting on her shoulder, inventing reactions to her words, and then send it out to battle, calling out orders and adding sound effects to represent its moves. As she tumbled and yelled, somersaulted and ran, darting through the trees on the edge of the clearing only to pop out with a war cry as she tackled an imaginary opponent, an observer could almost see the adventure she'd created come to life in that clearing.

At the base of a tree near the edge of the sun-filled circle, a woman sat with her eyes closed, basking in the sunlight. She had her head tilted back onto the bark of the tree with one leg stretched out in front of her and the other bent at the knee. Three backpacks were placed in a pile next to her--two large ones and a small one--with a Typhlosion lying down on the other side of the backpacks with its eyes closed, ears occasionally flicking upwards whenever the little girl hit the ground. A Ninetales rested its head on its front paws on the other side of the woman, its tails twitching to try to avoid having them stepped on as the child used them in her imaginary adventure. The vulpine's half-lidded eyes were locked on the child, though they momentarily darted to the apparently-sleeping woman, the prone Typhlosion, and a rustling patch of foliage.

The woman leaning on the tree had fallen into a light doze, but she was still aware enough to feel the presence of another person settle beside her; she smiled when she felt the other person wiggle his arm onto her shoulders and give her a hug. Still smiling, she cracked open her eyes to meet the gray-green eyes of her husband, Brian, who'd apparently just returned from making sure their daughter was safe from wild Pokemon for the moment.

"Hey," he whispered, smiling back at her.

"Hey," she replied, shifting her weight to lean on him instead.

Together, they turned to watch the little girl playing in the clearing alone and the woman began thinking back a decade to when the child had first entered their lives.

~!~

The woman, Katie, had been twenty-three-years-old and still very much interested in challenging all the Pokemon Leagues that she'd known of. Her traveling partner, Brian, had been a childhood friend that she'd grown up with and had promised her parents that he'd make sure she was fine, though it would be several more years before she learned of that promise; he had been twenty-seven. The pair, along with her Typhlosion, Summer, and his Ninetales, Blaze, had spent a night at a bar in Goldenrod City, after she'd taken on her first Elite Four, and had woken up the next morning with no recollection of the previous night's events.

They'd continued onwards and, as the days passed, Katie had quickly realized that something wasn't quite right. She'd gotten tired quicker and earlier, even with less exercise, and she'd gotten mood swings, where she hadn't before. She'd had cravings for things that she normally wouldn't have wanted and rejected things she'd normally love. Confused and worried, the pair had gone to a doctor and when he announced her pregnant, they both just stared at him in shock. Neither of them could find anything to say to that pronouncement, but they thanked the doctor for her time and returned to their hotel room to discuss their discovery.

At first, Katie had been against having the child, not wanting to be weighed down by the responsibilities of parenthood while she was trying to win League matches. Brian, on the other hand, was thrilled; not only had he been thinking of having a family, he loved children and had long been harboring affection for Katie. Eventually, he was able to convince her to keep the child and Melissa had been born in Cherrygrove City, after Katie had had an impulsive visit to the Johto location.

Over the next ten years, the pair continued traveling throughout the Pokemon world with their new daughter, showing her the sights and allowing her to experience the world of Pokemon. Brian had been the one to watch over her, as she grew, while Katie was still trying to to fulfill her own dream and the little girl had quickly developed into a tomboy. When she'd turned eight, though, Katie had looked at little Melissa and realized that she'd barely had a hand at all in raising her own daughter, having been frequently too busy with her Pokemon to have time for the little girl.

So, when Melissa had looked at her with her big brown eyes, Katie couldn't refuse the child's request and passed the appeal over to her Summer, who'd taken one look at the little girl and accepted. It turned out the Typhlosion and the Ninetales had gotten together long before their respective humans had and it wasn't long before there was an egg ready and waiting to be hatched. The little girl had been absolutely delighted and had taken to carrying the egg everywhere she went. It wasn't long before they'd returned to Johto again, Melissa having grown an attachment to the region before she'd even learned to speak and frequently asking to visit, going so far as to throw tantrums when she was young enough not to understand that Johto was sometimes very far away.

~!~

Katie was brought back to the present when a loud crack! split the air, the little girl playing in the clearing freezing at the sound. The Typhlosion and the Ninetales both raised their heads to look at the little backpack that they remembered seeing Melissa place the egg into with all the seriousness of a ten-year-old child. The little brown-haired girl quickly scrambled to her feet at the second crack and ran over to her bag, unzipping the pocket and pulling out her egg to place on the ground, so she could watch it hatch. An expectant silence fell over the forest clearing, the older individuals all focused on the young child staring intently at the hatching egg.

With one final loud crack, a Cyndaquil popped its way out of its egg and shook itself, flaring its flames briefly before extinguishing them and looking curiously at the little girl who sat before it. Melissa cautiously reached out a hand to pet it and it walked over to nuzzle her outstretched hand, making a broad grin stretch itself across the little girl's face. Petting the newly-born Pokemon, she ended up placing it in her lap and staring at it in awe, while it snuggled into her and peered up at her.

"Are you a girl?" she finally asked, after staring for a while. He shook his head. "Oh, you're a guy?" He nodded. "Alright then." It was obvious that she was thinking of giving him a name and she nodded when she decided. "I'll call you Wildfire. How does that sound?" He tilted his head to the side, considering the name for a moment, before he made his own decision and nodded with a bright, "Cyn-da-quil!" She squealed happily and hugged him tightly, forcing a surprised squeak from the newly-dubbed Wildfire, before she looked up at her parents. "Mammy, Daddy, look! I've got a Cyndaquil named Wildfire." She smiled up at them with all the happiness of a child who'd just gotten everything she wanted for Christmas; they couldn’t help smiling back.

Meeting Lyle and First Team Socializing

It had been almost a month since the pair had arrived at Fizzy Bubbles and they found themselves wandering through the main city again, making their way towards the Adoption Center to check out what was there. Melissa ambled down the street, in no hurry at all, with Wildfire perched on her left shoulder, as was usual. She wondered whether she should get any Pokemon this time, since she’d been there a few times to see what was there, but she hadn’t decided to get any before; she was fully aware that she would only have five available slots until she unlocked her PC and she was in no hurry to get Wildfire to level fifty.

Arriving at the Adoption Center, they entered it and looked around, gaze jumping from a Squirtle to a Budew to a pair of Aron and a Swablu. Melissa casually walked around, looking at the Pokemon available, but trying to allow none of their pleading looks influence her decision. She stopped abruptly when she saw the Lileep, though, recalling from her preliminary visit that Fossil Pokemon were only available through an Enigma Egg or through coins. Still, she wasn’t quite sure if she should adopt him, seeing as she wasn’t quite a fan of Fossils. After a moment, the teen shrugged, careful not to dislodge her starter; it couldn’t hurt, right?

She withdrew three Rare Candies and passed it to the clerk at the counter, indicating that she wanted the Lileep. Pulling out another Pokeball, she waited for the clerk to take out the Pokemon before she tapped it on the head and walked away, thinking about a suitable name for her new Pokemon.

~!~

Several days later, once she’d decided on a name for her new Lileep, she sat on the edge of her bed, setting Wildfire on the ground and releasing her Lileep. She told him, “I’ve decided to call you Lyle. It’s nice to meet you, Lyle.” She smiled at him, her expression dimming when the Lileep stared despondently at her, before introducing Wildfire. “This is Wildfire. As I’m sure you can tell, he’s my starter. Maybe you two can talk about something.” Her voice lifted up optimistically at the end, but, watching how the Lileep acted, she wasn’t really sure they’d be able to talk about anything. “Well, I’ll leave you two to it then,” she said, turning to pull a book out from her knapsack and settling down on her pillows.

On the ground, Wildfire hesitantly turned to his new teammate, hoping to establish…something with him. ”Hey, Lyle. How’re you feeling?”

Lyle sighed. ”Eh, alright, I s’pose. I guess I’m just waiting for this trainer to get sick of me, too.”

Wildfire shifted uncomfortably. ”I don’t think Melissa’d do that. She’s a pretty new trainer and you’re her second Pokemon.”

Lyle shook his head. ”No, no, she’ll get sick of me eventually. My first and last trainer got me from the Coins for Prizes only to drop me off at the AC before a half year had even passed. Then, he decided to pick me back up and then put me back. Just you wait; she’ll get rid of me eventually.”

Wildfire stared helplessly at the Lileep. He had a pretty good feeling that the other Pokemon was not going to be convinced easily, but he was now uncertain as to whether Melissa would actually keep him, with the way he was acting. Deciding to leave Lyle to brood and mope, the Cyndaquil leaped up to the bed to curl up in Melissa’s lap.

The trainer glanced down at the sudden weight in her lap, smiling at the sight of Wildfire curled up in her lap. “Hey, you two done chatting?” she asked him softly, putting hand on his back and rubbing. He nodded and thought for a moment, before looking up at her and saying, ”He’s depressed, I think. His last trainer couldn’t decide whether to keep him or place him at the Adoption Center, so he ended up at the Adoption Center, with his trainer, and then back at the Adoption Center again. He fully expects you to give him back to the AC eventually.” Though Melissa wasn’t a fluent Pokemon speaker, she could understand the gist of what Wildfire said; they’d been together so long that it would have been weirder if she didn’t understand him. She glanced at the sad-looking Lileep, before she answered her Cydnaquil, “Well, I can’t make any promises, but I’ll keep him for as long as I can.” He nodded and also glanced over to the Lileep, feeling a little sorry for the guy; the other Pokemon didn’t have the confidence in trainers (or at least, this particular one) that Wildfire had and Lyle was hurting badly. Wildfire hoped Melissa could do something for him, though he wasn’t betting on it; with her conditional promise, he figured it really would be only a matter of time before Lyle left the team.

Halloween

Melissa approached the Ouija Board somewhat excitedly, having watched the other members' results ahead of her. She hoped she'd get something nice, though based on her results from the previous events, she wouldn't get anything; it was still fun to join in on the suspense, though. It'd be really cool if I could get a shiny Unown, she thought to herself, recalling one of the veterans winning the Unown F, as she put her finger on the pointer. She stared at the board expectantly, waiting to see whether she'd get anything, but her spirits slowly fell as nothing happened. With a sigh, she removed her finger. "Guess they don't want to talk to me, either," she said, not altogether surprised and a little disappointed.

She moved on to the Haunted Mirror, releasing her Misdreavus along the way. "Hey, Imp. You ready to face the Mirror?" she asked her ghost who was visibly excited by the fact that Halloween hadn't been too long ago. She nodded, flying on ahead and up to watch as the other trainers took their turns. Melissa sighed tolerantly and addressed her Cyndaquil, who was emitting a disgruntled air from where he sat in his Pokeball. "Don't worry. We'll be fine, Wildfire. I just don't want the mods or the Mirror to think I'm putting two Pokemon in front of the Mirror and double my chances, possibly illegally, of getting tricks and treats. Especially tricks," she added, thinking back on how she'd checked the previous records before deciding whether to enter in the event. Wildfire didn't look any happier at being reminded of that, but he settled down to keep an eye on the proceedings.

Melissa began getting more and more nervous as the crowd shrank, Imp calling out the results of each trainer's encounter to her. It probably didn't help that her little ghost sounded as if she was getting nervous also. The teen winced a few times as people got banned from the shops, had their Pokemon deleveled, and lost their items, those events sticking harshly in her mind as opposed to the prizes. She began having second thoughts, but it was too late to change her mind; it was now her and Imp's turn to face the Mirror.

Imp seemed to have forgotten her nervousness in the excitement of it finally being her turn and the possibility of winning something nice, but Melissa approached much slower, the tricks still hanging grimly in her mind. That was why it took her a moment to realize that the Mirror was now showing a Blood-Red Skull and an ominous cackling was coming from it. She watched in shock as the mirror's surface turned to liquid and reached out for her Misdreavus, who shrieked in terror and struggled to escape it. "Imp!" she yelled, hovering anxiously, not daring to touch the liquid as Wildfire popped out of his Pokeball, flames flaring as he glared fiercely at the mirror. "Imp, are you okay? Imp!" If Imp made any response, the two of them couldn't hear it.

After a few more moments, the liquid trickled back to the mirror and Imp immediately darted towards Melissa, whimpering in fear. Her trainer quickly took them out of the way, so someone else could take their turn, but they didn't go far. Wildfire looked on in worry as Melissa soothed her Pokemon, the little ghost mumbling something about terror and fear and not being able to move. "It's alright, Imp. It's over now. We're right here," Melissa told her, releasing Stella, who took a moment to get oriented and then began trying to comfort Imp, as well.

As Imp's whimpers began to subside, though, Melissa began to notice something odd about her Pokemon. The Mirror had done something more than she'd thought. Well, aside from probably giving Imp a fear of mirrors for the rest of her life.

"Imp," she began and Stella, Wildfire, and Imp all looked up at her, noticing the odd tone in her voice. "You might want to take a look at yourself because I don't think the Mirror wrapped those tendrils around you for fun."

"Huh?" Imp sniffled, glancing at herself as well as she could, as Wildfire and Stella gaped.

"You're gray!" Stella exclaimed, while Wildfire added faintly, "The Mirror turned you gray."

"It did?" she asked curiously, still trying to see for herself.

Melissa reached into her bag to pull out her Pokedex, though she didn't activate it yet. "You want me to show you?"

Imp nodded, prompting Melissa to point the device at her Pokemon. She then turned the Pokedex around, so Imp could see, and the Misdreavus stared for a bit. Hesitantly, she said, "It...doesn't look too bad. I guess."

"At least you aren't orange," Melissa told her sympathetically, snapping the Pokedex closed and sticking it back in her bag. "And we didn't lose any items or get banned from any shops and you didn't get de-leveled. All in all, I think we may have gotten off better than some of the others." She motioned to the Nuzleaf that had just shown her trainer a Black Ticket. The teen then got to her feet, setting Wildfire in his customary place on her left shoulder and offering Stella and Imp their Pokeballs. Both ignored them and Melissa returned them to her belt, motioning for them to follow her as she headed out. "Time for everyone else to see what happened, I guess," she commented, glancing back at Imp. "That is, if you don't mind."

Imp shook her head slightly, still looking a little shaken, but quickly returning to her usual self. Stella glanced back to give the event location one more once-over and almost squealed at the sight of one familiar Bagon. She knew she'd run into him again one day! She was almost tempted to ask Melissa to stop, but then she noticed him get sucked into the Mirror and she stared in horror until he was spat back out, completely gray, like Imp. Stella wasn't quite sure what to make of that, but she turned and hurried away, having fallen behind her three teammates; she'd think about this new development later. Right now, there were other things to worry about.

Meeting Mar

Melissa spent the next half a month stopping by the Adoption Center at least once a day, waiting and hoping that the two listed Aron would still be there when she was eligible to adopt again. She watched as one and then the another was adopted by other new trainers, but only one item was removed from the Adoption Center's list of adoptees. She became confused and hesitant; was this a glitch? She recalled there only being two Aron in the Adoption Center and she could have sworn both had been adopted. Had the Adoption Center manager merely forgotten to remove the name?

The brunette checked daily as the next release date approached. Was she the only one who'd paid attention to that or was she just remembering it wrong? Should she bring it up to the manager? And if she did, who exactly should she be sending the notice to? But, at the same time, she'd been looking forward to picking up an Aron herself and, without knowing their rarity, this could be one of her only chances to get one.

This indecision prevented her from making any sort of decision until the scheduled release date, which saw her hurrying over to the Adoption Center with an empty Pokeball and three Rare Candies. She'd finally decided that it couldn't hurt to try and, if it turned out that her asking let the manager double-check, then, well, it wasn't like she wasn't expecting it.

Wildfire was grumpy on her shoulder, having been woken up from sleep when she'd finally made up her mind. He blearily watched as the new teammate was added with little fuss and shook his head at his trainer. There she'd been, fretting all month long, and there wasn't even a single thing wrong when she finally went to get him. Hopefully, she wouldn't be as wound up anymore, now that she'd gotten the Pokemon she'd wanted.

This time, when she sent out her Pokemon, Melissa could only be grateful that the room she was currently renting was built to withstand the densest small Pokemon. Otherwise, there would be a new hole in the floor as her Steel-type materialized in a flash of red, seeing as she'd forgotten that Steel-types tend to weight a lot. Maybe next time she'd head down to the small park behind the building to let her Pokemon out because she definitely wasn't planning on stopping these meetings. How else would they get to meet their teammates and learn about them before battling alongside each other?

Wildfire padded up to their newest teammate and introduced himself, while Lyle moped off to the side. By the way her Aron was shooting disdainful looks at the fossil, though, Melissa doubted he was very impressed with them. Still, this was basically get-to-know-each-other time, so she wouldn't interfere unless Moves were being thrown.

She was just about to settle down and pretend to be busy doing something so the three Pokemon could start talking when Wildfire came back and gave her a flat, expectant look. She blinked down at him in confusion.

"Didn't you have a nickname for him?" Wildfire pointedly asked.

"Ah. Right." Melissa grinned sheepishly at her starter and then the newbie. "I'm gonna be calling you Mar, instead of just Aron. Welcome to the team, Mar."

She got a considering look for several moments, before the newly-christened Mar nodded. "Thanks. I hope to be a useful addition to the team."

With that, she left them to their own devices.

"Hi. I'm Wildfire and that's Lyle. It's nice to meet you," Wildfire said, motioning to the fossil off to the side when his name was mentioned.

He got a steady look for his troubles and then a respectful nod. "Hello, Wildfire. It's nice to meet you. I don't believe I have a nickname, so I suppose I'm just called Aron."

The Steel-type shot a glance at Lyle. "What's wrong with Lyle? Is he usually like that?"

"Uh, as far as I can tell." Wildfire also eyed the fossil for a moment, but Lyle didn't really do much in response. "He's not all that interested in interacting because he doesn't think he'll be here all that long."

"That's ridiculous," Aron immediately returned, shooting the Pokemon a disdainful look. "He should be trying to get stronger, so the trainer won't put him back or trade him off."

"Melissa," Wildfire corrected. "She's not just a trainer; she's our trainer. And she'd prefer to be called by her name."

Aron gave Wildfire an odd look, but nodded in acceptance. "Melissa then. But, that doesn't mean she might not trade us away or give us back to the Adoption Center."

"Nooo, I'm pretty sure you and I aren't going anywhere, at least." Wildfire had a wry note in his voice. "She spent an entire month fussing over whether there was still an Aron in the Adoption Center and then hurried over on the day of the monthly release to pick you up. Also," he added, when Aron opened his mouth to speak, "she's been wanting one since we saw some in Hoenn with the family." Wildfire smugly crossed his arms and waited for Aron's response, but the dual-type only blinked and nodded.

"Oh, gimme a sec. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have a nickname, too. Lemme just ask her about that."

The two Pokemon and trainer had a quick conversation, which changed Aron's name to Mar.

"There you go. Not just another Aron, now. You're Mar." Wildfire grinned at him. Despite his doubts, Mar couldn't help giving the obvious starter a brief grin back.
