Round 9: Eel Eel Eel Eel Eel Mushroom Mushroom

With our two beach based battlers re-engaging, we see the gap between the two closed quickly by a Mach Punch, Breloom zipping forwards at impressive pace as a ghostly fist detaches from his own and flies towards Gorebyss, who is out of the water and using a Supersonic attack now. The fist strikes the Sniper Eel a light hit to the head, causing her Supersonic to peter out into a strange shriek of pain, leaving Champignon looking dizzy but not confused in the classic sense, struggling to keep his footing on the sand a short distance away.

Whilst Champignon wobbles, Sniper shakes more violently and splits into a smattering of Double Team clones, the exact number of which is rather irrelevant for posterity as another selection of Seed Bob-ombs are sprayed in a fairly sparse formation all over the clan of Gorebyss, most of whom disappear into the ether, leaving a single, slightly surprised looking Eel, who has taken good damage from the odd exploding Seed.

Summary

A bit of a divergence has opened up between the two for the first time here, with Breloom better off healthwise and Gorebyss holding an energy advantage. They’re not far apart though, on this front or in physical distance.

Breloom is approaching half health, and only a very good bit above half energy. These Seed Bombs are working well, but they’re not the most energy efficient attacks ever.

Gorebyss is below half health by a moderate way, but notably better off on energy.

Round 10: There goes the speedy bonus

First nine rounds at quite a pace and then this one went horribly wrong. Argh. See various TAs for list of excuses

With only a moderate distance between the two, the opening volleys of Bullet Seed slam into the now single floating Gorebyss, dealing only decent damage but disrupting Sniper, who finds it difficult to concentrate on his own attack whilst being pelted with the golden balls of energy, allowing Champignon to approach and leap in with his Sky Uppercut just as Sniper finally manages to start his Blizzard attack. Irresistible force meets er...irresistible force, and both Pokémon are sent flying in a magnificent anime style super-explosion, and it’s clear both Pokémon managed to land the majority of the power of their attacks as Breloom lies on his back in the sand, breathing heavily, whilst Gorebyss has been thrown up into the air and falls back into the shallows with an amusing plop, also looking pained.

Sniper just about composes herself enough to finish the round with a Psychic wave, not perhaps up to usual high power standards thanks to the distance and the previous exertion, but still powerful enough to do significant damage to Champignon, who cries out in pain, clearly having had the worst of the round.

Summary

Champignon clearly had the worst of that round, and his health is now on the upper echelons of critical, well in to the final quarter. Energywise, both he and Sniper are below half now.

Sniper’s health situation isn’t a whole lot better than Breloom’s, a decent bit below the final quarter mark. She’s also running out of Ice Energy, where she could probably manage one more Icy Wind level attack, and running low on Psychic, with one more wave-form Psychic available.

Dave.

Well, that didn't go totally to plan. Not sure how distance weakens Psychic, mind.

I'm... really not sure how Sky Uppercut can explode, even in an a anime context.

Actually I'm gonna order either way because I kinda doubt it will change the outcome of the round.

"Make a low, open Rock Tomb around yourself for defense, and duck behind it. Use the light while you wait for her to finish to charge a Solar Beam. If you can't get the Solar Beam, Rock Slide. Finish with an Energy Ball either way."

Potential 3-move possibly confirmed maybe depending.

Round 11: So slow its fossilised

Yeah, Internet issues at the moment. Have imported my reffing spread sheet on the University server though, so we should be able to progress at a decent if not speedy rate…This round is nice and complex again by the way.

With a decent distance between the two combatants, both are able to dust themselves off from the last round’s exertions before launching in to a whole new round of chaotic battle. Sniper begins proceedings by scraping the barrel of her Ice Energy reserves to pull together one last frigid assault, an Icy Wind gusting strongly through the otherwise warm breeze towards Champignon, who defends himself with a hastily constructed Rock Tomb, more a wall than a true Tomb, with the majority at least of the rocks landing in front of him and blocking the majority of the Ice attack, saving the Mushroom’s Bacon, for want of a better phrase as he only takes very mild damage from the wind seeping between rocks.

Cursing his lack of immediate success, Sniper switches back into her other favoured arsenal from previous rounds to blast forth a Psychic wave into the granite barrier between the two Pokémon, this attack having about as much success as the last in getting through the barrier. The wave does however push apart some of the rocks and deals moderate damage to Breloom who is only narrowly able to cling on to consciousness. Champignon is not going down without a fight though, and, probably wisely adjudging he wouldn’t be able to hurdle the Rock Tomb with a charged Solar Beam in the bank, deals out a Rock Slide, sending the remnants of his barrier tumbling towards Sniper who is unable to dodge the full flow and takes some good damage.

Aiming to administer the coup de grace, Champignon uses a third move to add an Energy Ball to proceedings, playing a lovely game of Beach Volleyball as he smashes the attack down onto Gorebyss, ending the Archer Eel’s resistance with an impressive degree of overkill.

Sniper is unable to battle! A third Pokemon from DTFG if you would…

Champignon Update

Health situation dire: would be KOd by a Level One Magikarp’s Splash at this point: from a quarter of a Mile away. Energy use significant in numerical terms but insignificant in effect on the battle itself.

Jeri has used his first three mover.

Gogo obvious unhappiness!

Mind if I ask why why Sniper would knowingly waste energy by attacking a foe that she cannot see? I was honestly expecting her to attack during the Solarbeam/Rock Slide, when she has a clear shot.

Because otherwise the round reads "Both Pokemon wait for ages for the other to do something" and that sucks. Rock Tomb isn't fully solid, Gorebyss had a decent idea where Breloom was and did indeed hit it (a bit).

Was honestly expecting Breloom to get bored and Rock Slide, prompting Psychic, most likely resulting in a Double KO there, but screwing me over in reffings seems to be some sort of trend atm :/

"Return Sniper, valliantly fought against a huge advantage.

Let's go with the Librarian."

Quote:
The Librarian: Level 5 Male Primeape
Primeape: (Fighting) - Mankey and Primeape interpret being stared in the eyes a challenge to their authority. Thus, any eye contact attacks an opponent uses will raise Mankey or Primeape's attack power and energy use for the next two rounds. During these two rounds, Mankey and Primeape will attack the one who did the staring incessantly, and will ignore any orders to attack something else.
Fighting Pokémon train extensively, more than any other Pokémon type, which gives them slightly greater endurance and energy.
Sig Pending Approval

"Great job, Champignon, come on back.

Astrum, take off!

Quote:
Astrum - Male Drifblim (Level 5)
Bio: During the third great Super Smash Bros. crossover of 2007 in which Nintendo breaks down their series continuities for a period, Astrum managed to find himself in the Mushroom Kingdom. After multiple Pokeball releases, he began to warm up to the place, and eventually found himself taking an extended visit in the fair kingdom. However, when Bowser got bored and decided to lift Peach's Castle into the sky again, he got taken along with it. After a while, he met the cheery star beings, the Lumas, and learned about the ways of the stars. Sharing similar biology, he became able to use some of the strange abilities the Lumas could, including how to make and utilize his own Launch Star. Through practice and refinement, Astrum managed to simplify the ability to be used efficiently and effectively in battles.
Signature Attack - Launch Star (Ghost/Flying)
Using his most malleable energy type, Ghost, Astrum forms 2 star-shapes around him, one smaller one around his lower body and one larger one around his rotund main body. Then, with a quick spin, he uses the energy from the stars to propel himself forward at considerable speeds, with the energy enveloping his head in a manner similar to Skull Bash. When in flight, he has a good deal of control over his direction, but he can only turn in fairly large arcs, and sharp turns are extremely difficult to achieve and commonly slow him down. Because of this, the attack is somewhat easier to dodge, but the speed at what it is executed (akin to that of a short-term Agility) makes the time frame for dodging shorter. This attack does the damage and takes the energy of a Skull Bash.
Disable the Hyper Beam, and go ahead for a Launch Star."

Round 12: Fossilised Schmossilised.

Bad News: Pokémon Black came out
Good News: I want nearly all the Pokémon off it so need to ref a lot more

It’s all change at the beginning of Round 12, with both trainers recalling their Pokémon, DTFG due to the minor inconvenience of unconsciousness and Jerichi as part of a cunning exploitation plan involving abuse of Switch=KO and the hijacking of a Hot Air Balloon.

Talking of Hot Air Balloons, we have a rather strange Ghostly one flying about the battlefield as Jeri’s new Pokémon, a Drifblim he has named badly by not calling it Hindenburg, the one single correct name which can be given to this species; Astrum being the Latin word for Star and therefore misleading as well as incorrect which eliminates all of Jeri’s Brownie Points for the good Breloom nickname. As the other newly released Pokémon is The Librarian, a reference made of 100% solid win and a nickname which most definitely comes out victorious in this matchup.

The Librarian begins the round with a little distraction, considering the use of a quick Vacuum Wave to kill off his opponent before resolving that the Drifblim before him is very much dead already and that that exact fact is at least half of the problem he faces. Instead, he aims a moderately charged Hyper Beam at his helium filled opponent, spending a second or two charging up before finding himself almost totally unable to consider releasing the attack, Disabled by the sheer force of Drifblim’s will, the energy sapping away as the attack dissolves into nothing. Primeape curses, easily angered, and launches into a more instant attack, a Secret Power striking the generally solid ghost Astrum for good if unspectacular damage.

Reaching across the borders of canon into the land of Italian Plumbers, lifebearing Mushrooms and unusual gravitational forces, Astrum’s next move is a Launch Star, an unusual concoction of Ghost and Flying energies combining to send Drifblim zooming with his nickname suddenly more justified, dealing some heavy damage to Primeape thanks to the Flying elements of the attack and sending it tumbling back into the sand as the graceful Ghost speeds past before losing momentum and returning to being blown by the gentle breeze.

Summary

Primeape took more damage in that round, but both are still in their first quarter. The energy situation is reversed, with Drifblim having used fairly large amounts of energy by first round standards and Primeape only a fairly manageable amount.

Round 13: Starstrukk

And that’s the only 3OH!3 reference you’ll be getting out of me, so cut this one and out and keep it. In serious news, staying with my “old” scale until there’s a natural changeover point (double KO/Switch) but will use new attack descriptions where those are relevant.

Twirling on the spot to face his opponent, Astrum goes straight on the offence with a wave of Psychic power, the air rippling around the force burst as The Librarian steadies himself to take the blow, grimacing as the super effective power rolls over him for high levels of damage. Primeape calls out in pain and rage, but in a manner perhaps out of character for him, The Librarian reacts fairly calmly by cursing his opponent with all his Spite, leaving the usually-Psychic familiar Astrum feeling a little lower on Psychic energy that he usually would.

Looking to shut down any further attacking aggression from the Fighting type for this round, the Ghostly Balloon begins a Thunder Wave, the tendrils of electricity snaking through the warm air towards The Librarian, who appears to have looked up Thunder in the Dewey Decimal System as well and pulled the larger attack from the shelves, crackling with his own electrical current as he loosens off a giant lightning bolt to strike a fearsome blow to Drifblim. Astrum is unable to dodge, having been keeping up his Thunder Wave, but his efforts are rewarded by a clearly fairly paralysed Primeape. Fans of irony will however note that Astrum himself seems to have succumbed to paralysis from the Thunder strike, which means the next round may well appear to be the equivalent of a fight in an Old Folk’s Home.

Summary

Big round of damage, with Drifblim taking even more than Primeape, albeit from a higher position to begin with, leaving the two around the same level in the grand scheme of things, both a decent way above a half, with energy for both a significant way higher thanks to some interesting super effective attacks on both sides: Drifblim is lower thanks to the Spite, but has more of his typed energy remaining, around enough for another Psychic, while Primeape’s electrical reserves are all but spent.

Both Pokémon are very tired after extreme energy use in that round, and both are moderately paralysed, which should lead to a comparatively quiet Round 14.

Edit: To clarify, Drifblim remains Airborne: Paralysis or not, it floats.

Round 14: How the hell has this been a week?

Well, six days. My life is flying by dangerously...

At the start of this round, a Primeape lies paralysed on the sand, but somehow manages to paint on some thick black mascara, dye its hair black and put a My Chemical Romance Album into a sand covered CD player. That’s right, the Librarian has looked into the reference section and discovered the lifestyle of an emo, embracing it fully as he starts the round with a spot of self harm. Somehow, The Librarian secretes some Smellingsalts (most likely a free sample of Marilyn Manson’s latest scent) as he uses one of the more unusual Pokémon moves, slapping himself with reckless abandon to break his paralysis.

Struggling to stifle giggles at the unusual site before him, Astrum simply responds with yet more lightning, calling down a Thunder strike to allow the Librarian to taste its own medicine, taking major damage from the giant bolt of electricity, but sadly for fans of extremely painful irony, not sending him straight back into the clutches of paralysis. Primeape leaps up in the air, partially due to his newly returned litheness, but mostly due to the zillions of volts of power encouraging him off the floor.

Determined to fight back hard, Primeape launches a fearsome vengeance: Astrum can do nothing but float and despair as the Fighting type hits back with all it can, a mighty...Foresight????????

Oh my, that’ll really change the dynamics of this fight.

Astrum weeps for his ability to become ethereal and simply concentrates on keeping his physical form moving, a long term minded Agility freeing him of paralysis and giving him a little more ability to move against the warm winds of this battlefield.

Summary

Elsie’s reserves of sarcasm took a severe hit in that round, nearing the end of the first quarter. Luckily, he’s familiar with sarcasm typed energies, so not likely to run dry any time soon.

As for the Pokémon, The Librarian’s health is rapidly draining, into the final quarter by a minor amount thanks to his own efforts as much as Astrum’s. On the other hand, he used only moderate energy against Drifblim’s high levels: leaving the Ghost below half on the energy front and entirely done for electricity. Astrum took no further damage though, and remains a shallow way above half.
