Lil' Bluey Jessica's Lil Secret Base

In a little corner of Sapphire Island's Southern Beach, there hides a secluded cove; rocky granite cliffs shelter it from the tide and the eyes of random passers by. Within the refuge, you come across a marine terrace that slopes underground, leading deep into the rockface. Following the tunnel, the dull color of the cliffstone gradually cools from silver to slate, shifting to blue tones the further you travel. You begin to notice tiny gems and crystals embedded in the rock, making the passage's walls shine and sparkle.

Suddenly. You arrive in a hollow, brightly lit chamber. A humble underground cavity heavily crowded by an assortment of furniture and appliances, leaving hardly room for a person to walk. Even if it were empty, the space would still be extremely tight. Yet the huddled gathering of domestic articles also lends the room a sense of coziness and warmth. Pale blues, soft pinks, and rich emeralds relax and soothe. Pretty flowers and dolls decorate the tables and shelves, ever available to cheer or to comfort.

Here rests a girl and her Pokémon between travels.

Custard:

Spoiler: show
Late one Christmas Eve, Jessica heard some strange sounds coming from the chimney and rushed into the living room to find “Santa Claus” in the process of removing packages from underneath the tree and placing them in his sack. The cookies and milk her younger sister had set out were consumed, leaving only crumbs and spills on the carpet. Jessica snuck up behind the phony Kris Kringle and tried to grab him, leading to a frenzied chase full of feathers and soot throughout the house that somehow miraculously failed to wake her folks (not to mention an undoubtedly restless kid – fortunately being in the top bunk meant she probably did not feel the bumps and crashes as much). When Jess finally caught the struggling bird, she marched him back to den and ordered him to put back the gifts (nice and slow like, keeping his wings where she could see them so he didn’t go for a bomb), as well as clean up the mess he made. They spent the night sweeping, scrubbing, and making a fresh batch of gingerbread to replace the ones lost. When the culprit tried to tiptoe away at this point, Jess prevented his escape by stepping on his train and told him since he ruined a little girl’s hard work, he’d have to pretend to be the real Santa to make up for it.

As morning dawned and an energetic Daisy came bounding the stairs, she found her older sister standing there with a drowsy Delibird dressed in a red hat and coal-black boots. Squeeing with joy, she ran and hugged the poor patron and protector of children, who practically suffocated under her deathgrip. Smiling while explaining their “special guest” had decided to stay for Christmas, Jess kept her foot pinned on the penguin’s tail-feathers, twisting slightly to incite a hasty squawk of agreement. As Daisy half-dragged him away to play in her room, Jessica patted the pitiful Pokémon with an invitation to dinner, promising it will be “delicious”.

As it turned out, they didn’t roast and baste him for the feast, and accepted ol’ Saint Nick as a welcome member of the table. After a hard day of punishment entertainment (involving many endless games of Ducklett-Ducklett-Swanna), the hungry poacher dug in gratefully, having never had so much to eat before. He especially savored the dessert: vanilla cinnamon custard. He became part of the family from then on, helping every year to make the holidays special for the girls. He was particularly good at stringing up lights in high places, even offering to hold Daisy for support when she was small as their father hoisted her to place the Staryu ornament on top of the tree. When she finally grew old enough to realize the truth, she wasn’t disappointed, but decided to dub him “Custard” instead after his favorite food. She still likes to tease Custard by calling him “Santa Bird” from time to time though.

When Jessica left to begin her journey as a trainer, she wanted to leave Custard to guard the home and start anew, but he insisted on coming too, saying he needed her assistance. (Besides, he felt driven out no longer needed ever since Daisy brought back that noisy blue songbird that wouldn’t shut up.) Though Jessica managed to get as far as the border of Fizzytopia by herself without crying over the fact she missed Mom and Dad, Daisy, and even that gluttonous thief, she soon heard a triumphant trumpet behind her and found Custard fluttering behind her high in the sky. He dropped into her arms, exhausted, and she chuckled as she ruffled his crown. While at first she jokingly complained she’d have to walk all the way back now to return him, he shook his head, handing her a note written in crayon from Daisy, saying she’d be fine. She and Sunshine would take care of their parents, it was Jessica’s turn to be looked after. Ending with a “Go get ‘em, big sis!”, underneath drawings described a warm image of all of them together in the snow, holding hands. Jessica sniffed and wiped her face on her sleeve, carefully pocketing the precious paper before turning to Custard.

“Guess we’re stuck together, you and me, huh? Come on, you great lug. Let’s go.”

Ever since, Custard has been as loyal a friend one could ask for. Though often prone to laziness and bouts of jealousy, he's always willing to put his best flipper forward to defend his companions. He does have a bit of a mean streak/destructive side, and enjoys playing tricks on people by handing them PRESENTs which turn out to be explosives. He'll occasionally throw tantrums or sulk when things don't go his way.

Bobble:

Spoiler: show
It was a gloomy, chilly night, around 9 PM. The first of February. Flakes of ash fell, fogging the small compact-mirror a woman held as she adjusted the wine-red lipstick and pink blush on her pale, peeling face. Shadow around sunken eyes too tired they didn’t need the enhancement, but eternally smiling ever the same. (Because who would want her if she didn’t seem friendly, at least? Not that it mattered to most of these men. It was more so her master wouldn’t think she minded standing out here on the corner, because he’d beat her if she complained. Plus she had to hang onto happiness, for herself.) She shifted from side to side in her high heels, tugged at her mini-skirt, and fluffed her feather boa, drawing it around her shivering skin, which was almost the shade of the ice surrounding her. She breathed frost into her hands.

Given a second glance, she wasn’t so much a woman as a small girl. Under the streetlamp, everything seemed scary, especially at this time when every other child was supposed to be in bed. The snow was slowly turning to sleet, then to rain. Headlights blinded her, though she already squinted to even see, as a car swooshed past, splashing her with misery and grime. She backed up to the edge of the silver pool’s safety, debating whether to sacrifice its warmth for the slim shelter of the orphanage’s roof behind her. As another vehicle swerved by (this time seeming to slide as deliberately close to the sidewalk as possible), she made a break for the building, briefly submersing herself in darkness. Even those 10 seconds from here to there felt like forever, and at any moment some monster might jump out and get her.

Upon reaching safety, she pressed up close to the window and saw the other youngsters soundly asleep in their soft beds. How she longed to be there with them, cuddling a stuffed animal until some kind couple came and took her home. She was the one on the outside, looking in. As water dripped down from the insufficient awning, drenching her tiny body, she wrapped it desperately in her bare limbs. So cold… Maybe she could just doze off here, and in the morning, an angel would arrive to bring her to heaven…

At that moment, the brim of a blue umbrella fell over her, and she blinked white tunnels away to find an older girl stooping with concern, a blubbery arctic bird by her side. (How lucky he was to be conditioned to this climate, to have insulation all-year round...)

“Hey, there. What are you doing out here all alone? Where are your parents? Or rather… Your trainer?”

For looking closer, the “kid” wasn’t a human at all, but a Pokémon. The Wynaut shook her head, but remembered her job. Turning to the plump penguin, she teased his plumage with her own and whispered in his ear, causing him to blush, colorless cheeks turning as red as the rest of him. The adolescent placed a gentle palm on the Wynaut, who shuddered, unaccustomed to such a pure, kind touch.

“Listen, you don’t have to do this. Let me talk to your trainer. I’m sure we can work something out.”

The Wynaut grabbed the girl’s arm, protesting for her protection. Jessica simply smiled though, and squeezed in assurance.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he understands. I promise I’ll take care of you from now on. We’re friends now, and that’s what friends do. Take care of each other.”

The Wynaut’s mouth widened with joy. Jessica laughed as the creature (whom she was starting to suspect was a boy underneath all that makeup, judging by the strength and weight) leapt into her embrace. With Wynaut on one side and Delibird on the other, the three linked together, leaning to provide support. The cheerful trio then walked off, never looking back at that frozen block where a little miracle took place...

…That was how Jess and Bobble met. Or at least, how Bobble recounts the story. Custard vehemently denies it, of course, and Jess merely chuckles and shrugs, saying she’d never use an umbrella. In fact, Bobble’s background varies every time it’s repeated. Another version had him playing the part of the little match girl, and at one point he actually saved Jess and Custard instead. Once he was a member of a motorcycle gang (which explains why he wears shades sometimes). Even the setting and period of day change on occasion. No one really knows the whole truth of his history except himself – and maybe Alice, who incidentally also spent her life in (actual) indentured servitude prior to meeting Jess. She doesn’t seem to be bothered by her boyfriend making stuff up telling tall tales stretching the truth a bit to suit the situation. Rather, she admires his imagination and amazing ability to adapt to any circumstance, often enjoying the twists he tosses in.

As such, Bobble is something of an enigma. It's often hard to tell exactly what he's thinking. He goes with the flow, grooving to whatever beat he happens to be hearing at the time. He’s always happy to lend a helping hand however, and gets along with just about everybody. Even Custard, who formed a bitter one-sided rivalry with “Blue Boy” in the beginning for having to share the position of Jessica’s “number one partner”. The two eventually became best buds, but still fight every once in a while to keep the friction fresh. (Jess thinks part of the reason Bobble pretends the events of their initial encounter were more embarrassing than they were is to keep the Delibird on his toes.)

Bobble is unique in that he may be the first and only Wynaut to be sighted within Fizzytopian borders, and retains abnormal knowledge and powers from his glorious early years, having even won the inaugural Cute Contest Ribbon. However, he has since gone into semi-retirement from battles and contests, undergoing self-hypnosis and meditation to forget most of what he’s learned in accordance with the recent laws passed regarding TM usage – except for a select few extra Moves which hold fond memories. Satisfied with his track record, he’s now switched his focus to finding and sponsoring budding young talent. Minchi looks to him as a mentor, hoping he’ll someday make her into as brilliant a model as he was. Is.

He’s still the most fabulous Wynaut ever, after all.

Wandering along the southern beach of sapphire’s beautiful islands, Matthew chuckled as his Hoppip let go of his shoulder, his arm providing a shied for the newborn to clamber on to as it learnt to fly. Whistling with pleasure and enjoying what he could of the beautiful scenery, Matthew looked at the sun’s rays, the presence of heat amplifying the radiance of the sparkle on the island fronts, the water droplets sheen surrounding him. With Hoppip carried off into the wind, Matthew watched the first stages of flight, flapping its tiny petals as it made its way back to Matthew’s sturdy arm, gliding as it caught the last wind current back. With the bustling city far away, Matthew once again re-iterated his direction on the pokenav, the base marked ‘Jessica’s’ coming up fast.

Suddenly! Matthew heard a shriek, turning around in a daze to see what the matter was, only to be relieved to find Pollen in one piece. Chuckling to himself, Matthew heard the same noise as another droplet hit the baby’s face, the tree’s morning dew dropping off a single leaf, a new and exciting sensation for the little grass-Pokémon. Offering his support in such a delicate time, Matthew held out his arms as Hoppip came scrambling back, Matthew giving the hoppip a tight cuddle before moving on.

As Matthew’s journey continued, he saw a rather hard wind pick up in front of him and warned Hoppip to be careful, only to look on his shoulder with nothing there. Eyes widened with shock, Matthew quickly searched the surrounding area to find the hoppip, only to see the leaf flying off in the dirction of the wind, ahead of him and giggling. Running through the bush, Matthew found himself standing in a vast wasteland of nothingness. Looking down, Matthew noticed his pokenav buzzing, signaling that he had arrived at his destination. Forgetting the position he was in, Matthew quickly searched the area for his Pokémon before finding the Hoppip after it signaled its location. Wiping a bead of sweat from his head, Matthew picked up Hoppip and warned the Pokémon about doing that again, giving him another heart attack was not on his agenda for the evening.

Seeing the Hoppip dead-still, Matthew focused his gaze on what Pollen saw, the grass Pokémon looking at him before glancing straight on; Matthew was puzzled, until he looked up. He was standing amidst an secluded cove, away from random passersby. Noting the location of the base, Matthew scooped up Hoppip into his arms before walking cautiously towards the entrance, the granite cliffs sheltering it from the tide. As Matthew got closer, he noticed a small entrance leading down the marine terrace, sloping underground as it went. Deciding to follow, Matthew quickly hurried into the caves protection from the freezing winds, marveling at the wall’s colour change, silver to slate as he got deeper, deceivingly changing to blue at the end. Looking at the coves roof, Matthew noticed the tiny gems and crystals above him, before hitting his head on a small door. Having walked into the wooden door, Matthew quickly knocked, waiting for entrance to the base.

“Jessica, It’s Matthew” he announced as he warned Hoppip not to destroy anything.

“Hm, I think the flowervase should go over there. Could you carry it, Custard?”

The Delibird sighed and reluctantly waddled over to the urn, which was bursting with a cheerful bunch of maiden pink flowers. In contrast, Custard almost looked like he was wilting. After an hour of rearranging furniture to his unflagging trainer’s tastes, he was completely exhausted. With a worn grimace, he braced himself and carefully lifted the heavy pot, staggering slightly before adjusting to its weight. With his bill buried deep in sweet-scented fragrance, he stumbled forward, unable to see for the velvet sea of pink in front of his eyes. He bumped abruptly into the table leg, nearly dropping his burden in surprise. Groaning, he heaved the bottle up onto the blue counter, making sure it was centered before collapsing on his feathered bottom. As he sat panting slightly, a Wynaut casually walked by, his eyes directed towards the ceiling. Suspended above his head was a small television set and attached video game console, both surrounded by a pale blue glow. Bobble noticed the floored penguin, and stopped a moment to grin and blissfully shrug his free limbs before carrying on. Another blue creature tottered after him, unconcernedly bearing a computer device and monitor on his back, complete with wires and cables. Thanks to the Corsola’s remarkable STRENGTH, Haruki had no trouble at all transporting the heavy machine.

Custard scowled after the pair, and slowly pushed himself up off the rug. He looked over to his trainer, who was surveying the developing composition with satisfaction and approval. The girl was tireless, directing her Pokémon excitedly here and there, reorganizing the room’s entire layout again and again until she achieved the perfect display. She exited and reentered the space repeatedly, testing each first impression in order to determine the right “feel”.

In her arms she cradled something that almost looked like a porcelain doll. What suggested that Ralts was in fact alive was the smooth, gentle sway of her olive-green hair, too fine and free to be synthetic.

Jess, Custard wants to know how come I’m not doing any work.

The trainer heard, and sensed Alice’s slightly smug smile in her mind. Jessica grinned and matter-of-factually explained to Custard.

“Alice is helping me figure out the best look- I mean layout for this room. She’s sensing the aesthetic energies, like feng shui. Right, Al?”

Sure, let’s go with that, which vocalized within Jessica’s hearing alone. The doll nodded her head and smiled.

“If you’re tired, Custard, you can rest on the sofa. I think we’re just about done. Hm…”

She strolled around the room, carefully navigating around the tables, dolls, and cushions. She stopped at the desk with the pink flowers. Forming a picture frame with her thumbs and forefingers, she squinted appraisingly at the centerpiece. Finally, she shifted the vase an inch to the left. She stood back, considered the effect for a moment, then shook her head and turned the vase slightly counterclockwise. Stepping away, she sighed and nodded at last with approval.

“Yosh. All set. Just need to hook up the TV and computer now. Custard? Could you come and help?”

The penguin’s look of relief swapped instantly to disappointment. As he heaved a sigh and prepared himself for another half hour of labor, suddenly there was a low knock at the door.

“Oh, seems we have a guest already. Well, the equipment setup can wait. Let’s take a break and welcome our first visitor.”

Jessica beamed and crossed carefully back to the entrance, closely followed by a bouncing Bobble and a happy Haruki. Meanwhile, Custard cast a thankful look towards the ceiling, and promptly collapsed onto the couch.

Jessica opened the door wide to find a tall young man standing there, and a wriggling Hoppip nestled in his arms. She smiled welcomingly as she recognized Matthew.

“Hi, Matthew. Come in, make yourself at home. Did you have much trouble finding the place? Ah, these are some of my teammates: this is Alice, these two are Haruki and Bobble, and over on the sofa’s Custard.” As she stood aside to allow her guest in, she rubbed the back of her head nervously. “Sorry it’s so cramped in here. Unfortunately Rocky can’t come inside, though his representative can, ha ha.” She pointed to a giant Rhydon doll sitting right beside the door, then immediately blushed in embarrassment at her lame joke.

“Urm, how’s RhyperBeam doing?” she asked. “Oh, and who’s this little cutie, by the way?” She bent down a little to smile jovially at the tiny Hoppip.

After a few seconds waiting, Matthew found himself being let into the base, stepping into the vast threshold of what once was just a mere hollow rock, now transformed into a cozy nest egg for the future, a re-visit able home away from home. Looking round, Matthew saw the frantic placement of bits and bobs, each adding an increasingly sentimental value among no other

Chuckling as Pokemon scampered across the floor. Matthew smiled as his gaze fixed upon the base owner, Jessica. Noting she had her Pokémon out of their Pokéballs, Matthew felt less guilty about letting Pollen come in without asking as he nodded.

“Hi, Matthew. Come in, make yourself at home. Did you have much trouble finding the place? Ah, these are some of my teammates: this is Alice, these two are Haruki and Bobble, and over on the sofa’s Custard.” The girl asked as he chuckled.

“Not so much finding the place as I did finding this little rascal. She seems to have a mind of her own when it comes to adventuring.” He answered as he took a step into the base, the Hoppip looking around at the base in awe. Giving Jessica’s Pokémon a formal wave, Matthew looked to see a Wynaut, a Corsola, a Ralts and a pogged out Delibird.

Smiling gently, Matthew suddenly felt the Pokéballs on his belt wobble as he winced, unable to stop the Pokémon coming out of their pokeballs, and at the same time guilty for not asking, Matthew squinted as he felt the familiar lump on his shoulder and the hovering Pokémon around his head. Turning to see his Shinx and Castform, Matthew blushed as he turned round in embarrassment to face the trainer, still unable to control his Pokémon’s escapee habits.

“Sorry it’s so cramped in here. Unfortunately Rocky can’t come inside, though his representative can, ha ha.” The girl said as she pointed to a Rhydon doll in the corner. Matthew’s face lit up as he recognized the doll. “I have one just like that” he laughed as he saw the trainer face go a noticeable pink.

“Urm, how’s RhyperBeam doing? Oh, and who’s this little cutie, by the way?”

Matthew chuckled at the imposition of asking on the Rhydon, his memory serving of her Rhydon beating his Rhyhorn in a scrap when they first met. “Aggressive, but I guess that wasn’t that much of a surprise.” He replied, the rock Pokémon’s pokéball sitting on his belt. “Ah! Where are my manners? This is Pollen, Lexi and Nimbus” he said as he introduced his Pokémon.

Looking at the base setup, Matthew noticed the unplugged computer and TV wires drawled across the floor in the backdrop. “Do you want a hand with that? Lexi is an excellent electrician. Takes after my father I guess..”

Although his own base was nearing completion, the trainer felt that the need to visit another overrode overseeing its completion, vieing to let his Infernape and Marshtomp deal with the rearrangement of the furnishings. Beside him, his other pokemon trotted, or at least the shy little Aipom known as Jackie and the somewhat disturbingly-calm Shadow Zangoose called Zeugnum.

Jamie cocked his head towards the Zangoose. Although a normally aggressive species, this variant, which being a shadow pokemon should be hyperaggressive to anything smaller them a Wailord, seemed to be rather civil. Granted, during times of combat in training it would gladly rip the eyes out of a Bidoof before shoving them where the sun don't shine, but Zeugnum herself seemed well-behaved. Behaved enough, he reckoned, to visit another person. In the event that she did go a little berserk, however, there was also Yakuza cooped in his ball, ready to deliver a swift peck to the nethers should the need arise.

Scanning the cliffs, he noted a small opening inside, leading to a tunnel, and ambling through it, Jackie nimbly darting ahead with Zeugnum in serene pursuit, as though a walk in the park, found himself at a small door, which the Zangoose was eyeing up as a possible threat. Pondering, the three of them heard soft giggling, and as Jamie shrugged and prepared to head back, his leg suddenly lost feeling as he crashed rather heavily to the ground, turning to see the distinctive shadowy aura around the Cat Ferret as it gripped his leg in a vice-like manner and Jackie seeming to be ready to bawl: A terrible fate for his poor ears.

At that moment, the trainer realised what sort of evil Zeugnum was: The one who preferred gradual torture to total batterage and as Jamie rose painfully, inching towards the door hand outstretched to knock on it, his sight never noted the purple feline give a sly grin before giving a high-five to the excited Aipom, their ruse successful.

Jessica chuckled in surprise as Matthew’s Shinx and Castform liberated themselves from their Pokéballs. As the boy mentioned he had the same giant plushie model as she, her face expressed noticeable relief. Noticing he seemed to be just as nervous and embarrassed as she, Jess relaxed more, determined to make the visit comfortable for both her guest and herself. She smiled and nodded as he introduced his three Pokémon.

“Hello, Pollen. Hello, Lexi. Hello, Nimbus. Nice to meet you all.”

Matthew’s eyes were searching the Base, and she watched anxiously for his reaction to the décor. His gaze settled on the tangle of computer and TV wires snaking along the floor in the background. I’ll have to move those so people don’t trip, she mused privately to herself.

“Do you want a hand with that? Lexi is an excellent electrician. Takes after my father I guess…” He offered graciously.

“Really? I don’t mean to make you guys work or anything. But it would be great if you could help us out. To be honest, I’m clueless with this kind of stuff.” She blushed and rubbed her head sheepishly. “And I don’t have any Electric-types who can assist me.”

Jess smiled at the little blue lion, whom she noticed sported a lovely white flower behind her ear. “Lexi, could you please lend us your expertise? I would be very grateful if you would.”

She turned back towards Matthew. “In the meantime, Pollen and Nimbus can play with Haruki and Custard. Bobble and Alice can probably help us with the equipment. How’s that sound?”

At that moment, there was another knock at the door. Surprised, she glanced apologetically at her guest. “Excuse me.” And she hastened to answer the call.

Standing there was another boy, who appeared somewhat sore. Two purple creatures stood on either side of him. One was a monkey, the other a mongoose. Wait, mongooses in Fizzy Bubbles weren’t purple…

“Kya!”

Jessica instinctively leapt back in alarm. This was the Shadow Zangoose she had formerly earned possession of in a competition, and who had threatened to attack her. Although Jess quivered in anticipation of the beast leaping at her throat, she did nothing of the sort, and simply stood beside her trainer. Realizing that she was the one behaving rudely, Jessica flushed and gingerly approached the caller again.

“Ah… Hello. Sorry about that. I just got a little freaked out. Er, welcome. Please come in, it’s all right. Really.” She fidgeted nervously, hoping she hadn’t insulted her guest so much he’d refuse to join her.

"Custard, could you give me a hand with those lights?"

Contrary to his previous decorating experience, the Delibird crowed enthusiastically, fluttering over to the table where the Christmas tree stood with a string of colored lights clamped in his beak. He flew in wide circles around the base, spiralling evenly towards the top. As he let go the string, he squawked in triumph, and Jessica nodded over to Bobble, who was stationed by the outlet. The little Wynaut, dressed in a full Santa outfit including a fake beard that covered most of his face, saluted smartly and inserted the plug into the socket. The tree winked to life, twinkles of red and gold glimmering brightly against the evergreen.

Next was the girls' turn. WHIPping out her VINEs, Hoshiko the Chikorita carefully wrapped them around Pippa the Piplup and lifted her up to the topmost boughs of the tree. The blue penguin giggled as she cheerfully placed a treasure at the very tip of the pine: a shining silver star.

Meanwhile, Alice the Ralts was finishing up her mission of decking the rest of the Base with sparkling fairy lights, and Haruki the Corsola came in, carrying the last of the presents to lay under the tree. Hearing their trainer call them over, they hurried to join her and their companions standing at the foot of their achievement, gazing upwards at its beauty with pride and awe.

...More than that, Jess could feel a sense of warmth and consolidation as the group huddled close to her, and she smiled softly. It had been a long time since she had spent Christmas with her Pokémon. As she bent down to scoop Pippa up into her arms, she thought about how sorely she had missed her companions during her absence, and how much they had probably worried about her. While Al had kept the team updated and under control via mental telecommunication, Jess couldn't help but wonder how well they managed to get on without her. Though they tried to put on a good show of staying strong, she could feel how tightly Pip clung to her trainer's chest, as if afraid the girl may all of a sudden disappear and leave her alone again. Even Custard, her oldest and most stubborn friend, squatted nonchalantly on her foot. Good old Haruki flanked her other side, effectively blocking all routes of escape. And though Bobble said nothing nor made a move of his own, Jess was sure that behind the dark glasses he still wore, his expression was one of smug satisfaction.

"Pip?" The penguin tugged anxiously at her crying trainer's sleeve.

"...Ah, it's nothing, Pip." Jess smiled and quickly wiped her tears. She kissed Pippa on the forehead and ruffled her feathers gently.

"Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere," she announced. Her Pokémon erupted into wild cheer.

Jessica beamed around. "Now then, shall we get ready for the party? Our guests should be arriving soon, so let's get the trays of cookies and eggnog on the table... Oh, and Custard, don't sneak any before the party, okay? Save some for the guests."

SQUAD Thanks for having me YUKI.N, and any apoligies in advance for taking liberties in terms of scenery etc.
I sometimes get carried away when casually RPing but I'll refrain from any self-updating in terms of characters
and your base's interior ^^;

Wes rubbed his hands together as the insufferable frost washed upon his skin, paralysing his legs albeit the persistent shivers. Carpeted in a thick blanket of snow, Sapphire Island was surprisingly busy this time of year. He was sure they’d taken a wrong turn – the bustling streets of the town centre couldn’t have housed a secluded refuge of any sort. Wes digressed, the warmly lit avenues littered with carollers singing “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” managing to raise his spirits. He smiled warmly, shuffling beneath his thick parka for any loose change as they progressed down the cobbled road.

The boy felt a furry paw tug against his own, Honii was sniffing intently. Wrapped in woolly garments and a pair of wellington boots; Honii looked far more like a human child than a Teddiursa. Perhaps the baby bear had caught the Island Cove’s scent, Wes could only hope as he waddled along in tow down the icy alleys. “Ursa!” he barked, his tongue stuck out as his eyes gazed waywardly. Wes’s nose crinkled in turn, his eyes catching way with a market stall flogging roasted chestnuts and other Christmas delicacies. Honii caught his master’s eyes, his own welling cutely as he struggled to COVET a quick snack.

“Silly bear!” Wes laughed to Teddiursa’s dismay, “You know we can’t afford to eat out”, he continued in a more sympathetic tone, “I’m sure there’ll be some food at the Christmas Party”. The boy tugged the grovelling bear as he’d been tugged seconds before, the warm food stand waning in the distance. The slushy paves were gradually supplanted with rustic pathways – the snow beneath their wellies untouched with the icy grass crunching with each footstep. A family of Snowrunt hustled in circles around what appeared to be a shoddily fashioned snowman – the creatures hustling into their burrows shortly after sight. Wes grinned, powering on through the snow-covered shrubbery with the sea-salty air acting as a compass.

Hours passed until Wes caught sight of the snow-white cliffs, “How am I supposed to find this place?” Wes pondered dismally. Honii was getting restless; his growling stomach breaking any concentration Wes could muster. The boy rolled his eyes, half itching to stuff the bear back into his Pokeball for a few minutes of silence. Suddenly! A sharp caw echoed from the mountainous darkness ahead – causing sleet to reel down the seaside cliffs-edges. Almost in unison a net of multihued dots sparked into life just a beeline from the duo like a swarm of fireflies. They were Christmas lights by no mistake, it had to be the cove they’d been looking for. Wes eagerly grasped Honii’s paw and hoisted him onto his shoulders, speeding through the untouched inches of snow en route of the festively lit bay. Wes beamed as the music filled his ears, set on greeting an old friend with a warm hug.

Jess. The first guests have arrived. It's Wes and Honii.

"All right, places, everyone! Custard, stop stuffing your face with those cookies. Let's give Wes a warm welcome!"

Everyone flew to the doorway, each clutching a festive party popper, which they promptly popped in poor Wes's unsuspecting face as soon as he set foot in the entrance.

"Merry Christmas!" Jessica cried as she reached through the rain of colored ribbons to embrace her old friend and his cuddly bear. "Sorry, Honii. Hope I didn't scare you."

Noticing the two appeared to be shivering and layered in thick winter wear, she swiftly ushered them inside the warm, cozy interior of her Base. "Come in, come in, make yourselves at home. Help yourself to food, there's plenty. Would you like Alice and Bobble to take your coats?"

The two psychics appeared simultaneously on either side of Wes and Honii, smiling rosily as they offered to hang the pair's heavy gear on the Rhydon rack stationed by the door. Meanwhile, Jessica busily began pouring three steaming cups of hot cocoa, two of which she set on a tray atop Haruki's coral to serve to her guests. As she blew on the surface of her own mug, she gestured for Wes to go ahead and have a seat on the couch.

"So how have you guys been? It's been such a long time... Tell me, has FB had any news since I left?"

It had been a good day. The pressure of the build-up to Christmas was off for a period, the break really hampering Matthew to go out into Fizzy Bubbles and adventure, if only for the brief phase he got off. Matthew’s Pokémon accompanied him closely, all sharing in the heat of Magmortar’s body, the Flame Body effect really taking the chill off what was a very cold place on a very cold Christmas day. It was nothing he hadn’t seen before, after all his own tree-top palace was freezing, however the heat from the fire-type was a welcome change.

Icicles hung from sand-blasted rocks and a dusting of snow littered the ground. Magmortar roared with disappointment as they got closer to their destination; having visited the base he and his owner knew what little space there was for some of his larger Pokémon. He glanced down onto his belt; his larger comrades tucked up inside pokéballs, and while he felt bad that he couldn’t take them all to the base, he was assured that they too would get some quality time over the break.

For now, he was accompanied by some of his younger Pokémon; giving them time to play in the snow and bond together like he had done with his previous compadres in times gone past. Demeter, a shiny oddish, was the oldest of the group although newest to his side. Having traded her from his friend Ben, Matthew felt the bond between the two was strong and while Christmas contained her least favourite element, the new setting befallen had taken the small grass-type’s mind off any troubles she had about him and focused on gelling with the team.

Following her, Sól the Togepi lay in Matthew’s arms, the leather jacket he had received for Christmas was not so warm as his previous hoodies he had worn so profusely over the year but it was more-so on the inside, the lining providing a perfect place for Sól to snuggle, and so she did. Muses the jigglypuff and Galene the Azumarill skitted on in front, joining the Oddish in playing with the snow while moving, a small but formed snowman being rolled in the process.

They had walked quite a way, but the start of the snowman had received little progress because, while in good spirit, their first plan had not gone so well. Noticing she was perfectly formed for the basis, Muses decided to rollout over the snow, creating a rather cold and large Jigglypuff who seen got bored of the idea of being a snowman, breaking out of the snowy prison that she had encapsulated herself in with the help of Magmortar’s warm touch.

Remembering that he was close, Matthew pulled Magmortar’s ball from his belt, the flame ball was different from most of the team’s premier balls. Being his favourite type of pokéball, Matthew had tried to insist Magmortar to leave his, but the warm ball from 2009 had become Magmortar’s home and he wouldn't budge. Withdrawing his large pokemon back into the ball and taking one last turn, he arrived at the familiar sight of the cove. Ushering his Pokémon into formation, Matthew approached the base, knocking a few times before taking a step back, leaving ample room for Jessica’s eccentric Pokémon.

Karmas rubbed his arms vigorously, the cold biting into his flesh. He was wrapped up in a heavy jumper and long pants, but still the cold managed to penetrate his body. Beside him Gail was playing the the snow, happy as a pig in the mud. She ran around Karmas' legs eating the snow as it fell down from the sky. Hovering above him was Flitter, the poor butterfly insistent that she were to come with him, despite the fact that she definitely wasn't made for flying in the snow.

"Now where does this Jessica live?" asked Karmas, looking around for any sign of life. Karmas didn't really know Jessica at all, but he had heard stuff about her and he had always liked to meet new people. So when he heard that she was hosting a Christmas party sort of thing in her base, Karmas jumped at the offer so that he could get to know the woman. Unfortunately that meant that he also had to traverse the snow ridden place to get there. He had just about given up when Gail tugged at his leg. She pointed at something and Karmas saw what he assumed to be Jessica's base. Motioning to Flitter the three of them ran, and got to the front door where they saw a fellow trainer, Matthew Karmas believed his name was, and his pokemon.

A knock on the door alerted Jessica to the arrival of another guest - two of them, according to Al. She smiled and excused herself from Wes for a moment to answer the door, leaving Custard and Bobble to entertain him with the "lovely" rendition of Silent Night they'd been practicing. As she opened the door once again to the bitter cold, she found two almost-snowmen standing there, shivering violently.

"Quickly, come inside, you two," she exclaimed, as her Corsola and Chikorita bounded out into the corridor to assist in herding the boys inside the warm cave. Jess quickly slammed the door shut behind them, just as an angry draft began to blow and stir a few frost flakes throughout the room.

"Al, could you hurry and get us two more cups of cocoa?" As the Ralts elegantly began commanding the thermos to pour beverages with her mind, Pippa also tried to make herself useful by toddling up to the two boys and tugging on their coats, stretching her tiny flippers out wide to take them.

Jessica smiled as she turned to Matthew first. "Hi, Matthew. Welcome back. Feel free to have a seat anywhere, Wes is already by the couches in the corner. I'll be with you two in a moment. You and your Pokémon can help yourselves to food too, there's plenty."

She then turned her attention to the second arrival, an unfamiliar face. She extended her hand warmly in greeting. "Hello, I don't believe we've met before. My name's Jessica, and welcome to my Base. I hope you and your friends enjoy the party," she murmured, nodding towards the golden butterfly and small snow sprite huddling beside their trainer.

♪ ♫ Hmm Hmm Hmmhmm ♪ ♫ Hmm Hmm Hmmhmm ♪ ♫ On Sapphire Island’s Southern Beach a boy with short brown hair hummed a merry tune as he strolled through the new fallen snow near the water’s edge. A cool breeze blew in from the adjacent ocean causing him to instinctively pull the green-and-white-striped scarf he wore around his neck tighter in an effort to keep out the intrusive cold.

Born and raised in the tropical climates of Pacifidlog Town, Hoenn, it wouldn’t have been surprising for the lad to bemoan his current meteorological state of affairs. However things were quite the contrary. Whether it was the prospect of getting to spend Christmas with friends and his Pokemon, or simply that the novelty of snow hadn't worn off yet, the boy’s spirits had never been higher. He was enjoying his wintry walk immensely despite the cool temperatures. Snow-capped trees dotted the region; while waterfalls of ice dazzling along frozen streams made for a breath-taking sight. The lad gaped in amazement at the beauty of his surroundings. Wrapped in an immense blanket of white, the chilly countryside gave off an air of purity and simplicity.

Clad in a black jacket, black trousers, and white adidas running shoes, the trainer William Hale paused momentarily as he thought to himself that today marked just over two years since he had arrived in the curious land of FB seeking to bury his former life and start over fresh. Two Christmases ago he traveled here under his middle name, Benjamin, hoping that one day he would finally be able to put his checkered past behind him.

During his short time in the land of FB, Will had gone on many strange adventures, encountered a variety of Pokemon, and met a number of unforgettable people. Time and again he found himself in situations where he had been given the opportunity to fight for justice, help those in need, and stand up for the defenseless. Though he didn’t know what the new year held in store for himself and his Pokemon comrades, he knew in his heart that he would continue his quest to lend aid to anyone who needed it, no matter what it cost him.

Lost in his thoughts of the future, Will stared absentmindedly for some time at the shoreline stretching out for miles before him. However, a loud bark suddenly snapped him out of his reverie, and he glanced down at the monochromatic she-wolf heeling patiently at his feet; her lolling tongue panting in and out rhythmically. Will kneeled down and tenderly scratched his loyal canine companion under her chin.

“Not much farther, girl,” he announced, his breath visible with each word. “Jessica’s place is just up ahead. We’re almost there.” In response, the Mightyena Hyneo playfully licked her trainer’s hand.

Straightening himself, Will turned to the lithe mystic standing nearby. “You ready, mate?!”

The Medicham Medeo grinned and nodded his head enthusiastically.

“Well then, what are we waiting for?!” Will exclaimed, motioning towards the rocky granite cliffs and secluded cove nearby. “I have a bad feeling we’re running late! Hopefully we haven’t missed all the fun!” Will whistled for Hyneo to follow them as he and Medeo set off at a trot.

* * *

Moments later, the three friends stood outside the door to the seaside hideaway. Will knocked and waited, listening to the muffled noise of conversation mixed with laughter and the occasional cries of Pokemon that issued from within.

Wes winced in amazement as a salvo of snaps broke the few inches of anticipation, colourful streamers showering forward and ensnarling the two frosty travellers. Wes smiled weakly, his heart skipping a beat as though he’d just been ambushed – he hastily ushered out of the cold and embraced his old comrade “It’s so good to see you again Jess, it’s been years!” Teddiursa wasn’t so enthusiastic, yapping grumpily having just been jostled off his master’s shoulders and half-way down his midriff. Wes unfastened the bear like a rag-doll as they scurried into the boisterous grotto.

“Merry Christmas”, the traveller panted with a weak smile - his winter gear unbuttoning itself courtesy of Bobble and Alice’s synchronised hand-shuffles. The boy patted the Ralts on the head affectionately, Honii shaking hands with the haughty Wynaut. Wes looked upward with his winter parka now replaced with a festive light-blue sweater - sporting a design of a polar bear Pokémon foreign to Fizzy Bubbles - eyes in awe of the brilliant pine tree spangled in lights and tinsel. He circled the room before finding a seat on one of the couches, Teddiursa slobbering above the festive buffet table.

“Save some for the other guests!” Wes laughed anxiously. The tranced bear appeared oblivious as he savaged a large fudge cake guzzled down with a mug of hot cocoa. He took a swig of his own, still shivering from the blizzardy walk.

“I can’t say a lot has happened really, Jess”, Wes confessed with a sense of shame, “I’ve travelled to a few exotic regions... but it seems like ages since I’ve had a real adventure, things really died down”. Suddenly their somewhat morbid conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door. Wes smiled as the Ralts scuttled towards the door and it telepathically swung open. Two young men entered through the cavernous hollow, their partners closely in tow. The boy squinted to confirm one of the travellers was Matthew – he shot up so not to seem unsociable.

“Matthew!” smiled Wes, wondering if the traveller would even recognise him from their battle a few years ago, “Merry Christmas!” he shook Matthews hand, feeling a bit rude as he turned to the other traveller with his hand extended, “We haven’t met, I’m Wes...”

Wes took another sip of cocoa, stood beside Matthew as they admired how strong Hellion had got since their last encounter. That reminded the boy he’d yet to release his own Pokémon. He shuffled about his pockets until he had five conker-sized balls.

“Squirtle-Squirt!”
“Gnaw!”
“Cloysta...”
“Tanga!”
"Glub Glub"

A brown shell burst from the cluster of lights in rapid rotation, five stubby limbs popping out of it on landing to reveal Raph the Squirtle. Brawly the Croconaw released a hostile snap as a sickly carp inavertedly slapped him in the snout. Cloysteris the Cloyster cracked open its conical shell, peeping outward before withdrawing back into its dark confines. Mojo the Tangela released a caveman grumble, cockily whipping his chest in efforts to impress the other Pokémon. Wes’s face grew pale with a ‘what have I done!?’ expression, before turning his attention to Guppy the Magikarp who was flopping helplessly on the floorboards.

“Say Jess, I don’t mean to impose but do you have a sink or something for my Magikarp?” Wes rubbed his head with a sense of embarrassment as the Magikarp floundered into a group of Jess’s Pokémon. Albeit muffled by the boisterous ambiance, Wes caught ear of another knock at the door. Before he could react Raph was scratting at the door impatiently as though he could smell who was on the other side...

He hadn't had interaction outside his adventures for many a month, and he was becoming quite bored with life in general, yet he yearned for something to remember by. It was christmas, and as he sat in his base, he sighed sorrowfully.

Here he was, cooped up at his place with nothing to do on the day that is classically about friendship, giving and recieving.

A small hand on his shoulder lifted his spirits slightly, then sunk them. While he was indeed fortunate to rescue his good friend Halley, he had went through some significant dangers in the struggle, and didn't escape unscathed. He swallowed dryly as he rubbed his eyes to stop the tears, knowing fully well the events that resulted in the Jirachi entering his team hit him hardest...

-=-=-=-

"LEEEM!"

"Watch it closely, comrade! Don't let it near!"

The Golem shook itself after the hefty Flamethrower, its power something underestimated from the demonic entity before her. Even Jamie had seen nothing like it, the beast appearing to be somewhat draconic, but with tattered wings and three heads, two of which were blind and built more like hands, while the third's sunken red eyes glared with malice. Zeugnum had already tackled it and failed miserably, a terrific swing of its tail sending the Zangoose back to her ball unconscious, and Wraith had taken a beating as well, repeated Dragon Pulses wearing him down, yet here he was, the monster on the ropes with one of his closest allies, Penance, ready to end this battle. The stranger commanding the dragon had committed much atrocity, using the wishing power of the Jirachi to summon this nightmare creature from another realm, and as Volcape held the weary legend, Penance growled deeply before raising her foot.

"That's right, knock it down with Stone Edge!"

Slamming down, Penance cracked the earth beneath them, the platform they were on suspended dozens of feet above the ground bursting with a hail of sharpened stones, numerous of which speared into the dragon, its roar of pain causing it to drop onto its haunches. Smirking, she nodded to the next order, to finish it with a hefty Body Slam. Taking a couple of steps back for momentum, the Golem began running when her master noticed with horror a faint blue aur surround his foe.

"It can use water moves!? Penance, stop! Take evasive action!"

His cries came too late as the dragon gave a roar and swept the aura in front of it, creating a powerful wave of water in an improvised Surf, the shocked Golem bouldering straight into the torrent, causing her to roar in agony as the monster sneered through bated breath before its left head reared up as it charged recklessly for her, an ominous blue glow in her.

"Destroy it with Head Smash, then rip its master limb from limb."

"DRAAAAAAAAAA!"

As she rose slowly, the Golem could only hunker down as the dragon's head smashed into her hide, a small explosion knocking Jamie back causing the unconscious Jirachi to shudder awake, alarmed at the sudden shock. Looking around, its eyes widened at the Golem's state, her body cracked and in no way fit for battle, a thumb barely hanging on. With a triumphant sneer, the dragon lifted both its heads up, ignoring the bloodied mess that was the third before lightning licked at the fangs as it trudged towards the trainer as he fumbled at his belt.

"GOO!"

"Penance! You're in no way fit for batt-AARGH!" Jamie cried as the dragon's right head snapped at him, missing him by inches physically but close enough for the electricity from the Thunder Fang to shock him, the boy collapsing as he shook in pain, Jirachi squealing as it fell from his grip. With a hiss, the Wish pokemon charged at the brutal creature only to be swatted down.

"If it does not offer more wishes, I see no need in it existing. Sazandora, kill them both then let us be on our way. He has outlived his use anyway."

"Goooleemm..."

In pain, Penance rose before slowly stomping towards the dark dragon before tearing off her thumb and flinging it to Jamie, the human looking at the digit puzzled. He stressfully looked up at his pokemon who could only give a solemn and tearful gaze as she turned to the dragon and roared in fury, digging her damaged hand into its flesh.

"SAAAAZZZ!"

"P...Penance, stop...you're in no way fi...fit for battling any fu-fu-further..." Jamie groaned through the paralysis before his beating heart skipped several beats as he saw the Golem dragging the mysterious pokemon towards its heartless master.

"So, the wounded rock decides it would rather die at my hands? Ahahurgh!"

The man's taunts were silenced as Penance slammed the dragon into the ground and wrapped her arm around the villain, staring towards Jamie as he struggled to his knees with but a whimsy smile as her body began to glow a heavenly white.

"You're going to in-injure yourself Penance...stop fight...No..."

That white glow wasn't a special attack, he realised too late. He had heard of the situation where the Geodude line would be willing to defeat their foes at all costs, even if it meant injuring themselves severely. His heart sunk as his first tear rolled off his cheek as he realised what his pokemon's attack was in its injured state.

Explosion.

The move would kill Penance.

His vision was blurred as his eyes excreted the tears, Halley's eyes closed in sympathy as the memories flooded to him. He was foolish to leave Penance in when the Golem was showing wear, and he should have recalled her and let his Infernape finish the dragon off. His foolish action meant that Penance could have still been with him this day. As it was, however, the Golem's resolve to save her master at any cost was one much too grave to be worthwhile.

"Jii..."

'We seem to have received some mail, master...'

The elevator chimed as his Lunatone entered levitating an eloquent envelope alongside Zeugnum, whose eyes rolled as her wimp of a trainer was still moping around.

'It is from a friend who Zeugnum knew very briefly before she came to you. It appears to be an invitation to a party of some sorts-'

"I'm not going."

Meteos' thoughts were snubbed as Jamie merely grunted his disapproval, causing the already edgy Shadow Zangoose to visibly shake with rage as she glared in disbelief.

'I understand...Zeugnum, if we can leave our master to his sorrow...'

As the Lunatone turned for the door with a hint of sombreness, the Zangoose screeched and lunged for Jamie, who never resisted as she forcefully shoved him into the wall, Halley yelling in fear as he dove to the side as Meteos initiated his psychic translation skills in annoyance.

"Listen here, numbnuts! It's not your Arceusdamn fault that Penance blew herself up! If you should blame anyone, blame the faggot and his stupid digimon thing! I'm growing tired of your constant whining and moping! Where the fuck is the guy I knew from before, who actually cared about going places!? This isn't like you! You are going to that party and you are going to forget about Penance for one Arceusdamn night, whether you like it or not! I refuse to follow the orders of a christmas grinch, so unless you can wise the fuck up and accept that she's gone, you can forget about any other plans! Are we clear?"

Jamie leaned there, mouth agape as a tear rolled down his cheek, eyes staring into the furious ones of his chromotographically violet and emotionally violent cat ferret pokemon as she pinned him to the wall and for a second it seemed he would faint.

"Heh..."

The Zangoose's scowl faded as she saw his trainer laughing, either from madness or in the midst of a nervous breakdown, and as he finished his bout of laughter he wiped his eyes with his sleeve.

"You're right, this isn't me at all...I'll go, but you can stay here. I don't want to remind you of the last time you went to a party. Penance had to pull you out the punch bowl after braining you with a wooden club..."

'Shall I prepare teleportation?'

"Sure, call Axel and Jackie as well, might as well get ourselves a good team."

As the Lunatone left with the sulking shadow pokemon, Jamie took note of the relatively empty surroundings and reached for his drawer, opening it. Reaching in, his hand touched something hard as his heart started to sink, but he gulped as Halley looked at him inquisitively. He nodded, and the Jirachi squeaked in joy as he went into his ball, the trainer pulling out a string as he looked at the object attached to it, putting the necklace on.

The thumb of a Golem. His last reminder of a good friend who gave her life so he could live his.

"Okay, we're heading out now. Axel, get to your ball.

The flash of light outside the cold snow led to the three of them being dumped into a deep chunk of snow, Jamie gasping as his legs became encrusted with the frigid stuff. As he scrambled out of the snow, he heard a soft giggle from behind him as his Aipom somersaulted from a tree branch to beside him, smiling at him as he stood there, his brown hair ruffled and deep blue coat built for warmer weather while his demin jeans were streaked white.

"F-f-f-f-flipping hell.." he cursed before noticing the light from nearby, noticing a trio of beings at the door, one of which appeared to be canine in stature. Brushing himself off, he trudged through the snow, hoping to god that the door opened before he experienced the freeze status firsthand.

"Hello, I don't believe we've met before. My name's Jessica, and welcome to my Base. I hope you and your friends enjoy the party."

"No, I don't think we have met before," replied Karmas, addressing his next sentence to both Jessica and Wes. "My name is Karmas and it is nice to meet you."

Karmas walked into the base, gasping in wonder at how pretty the whole place was.

This is definitely better than where I live thought the trainer Maybe I should do some improving sometime after this

As Wes let out his pokemon, Karmas realised that he should probably do the same, something he had promised them before he had left. He grasped four balls on his belt and released the pokemon from within. The first pokemon to materialise was Beau, his shiny Gloom, followed by Erra the Shadow Chingling, then Cotton the Skiploom and finally Zoran the Shiftry. The moment they were released the pokemon, barring Zoran, ran off to the other pokemon. Beau walked over to Mojo, while Cotton floated herself over to him. Erra had seen Alice and immediately rushed over to her, a look of mischief on his face. Gail and Flitter stuck by Karmas side.

"Those were Beau, Cotton and Erra," said Karmas, "And this is Zoran my faithful and first partner. And these two fella, I mean these two gals are Flitter and Gail."

The Shiftry nodded his head and gave a little wave of his leafy arm as a form of acknowledgment. He was about to say some more when he, like Wes, noticed that someone had knocked on the door.

As if there weren't already a severe shortage of space, Jessica's Pokémon had to hastily shuffle to make room for Wes's flopping Magikarp. The girl herself resembled a fish as she gaped and floundered in search of something to fill with water. Luckily Bobble came to the rescue by dumping out the flower centerpiece and filling the empty dish with WATER GUN. Custard gleefully grabbed Guppy and (resisting the urge to eat him after seeing his trainer's stern look) dumped him in the bowl, which was fortunately just large enough to sustain him.

Jessica smiled apologetically at Wes as she lifted the fish in a dish and restored it to the table to make room for more guests, whom she'd heard knocking at the door. As she left Hoshiko and Pippa to pick up the flowers, she hurried to the door and opened it to reveal another pair of shivering boys and their Pokémon.

"Hey, guys, come on in." Now pros at the welcoming process, she and Haruki had steered them inside and removed their coats faster than you could say "Fizzy Bubbles". Alice was already prepared to serve the two steaming mugs of cocoa. Jess beamed proudly at her visitors as she slowed down to politely and properly introduce herself.

"Hello, and welcome to my Secret Base. My name's Jessica, and I'll be your host for the evening. What are yours?"

She extended her hand to shake Will's first, then turned to Jamie. She paused for a second, first out of vague recognition. She seemed to recall seeing his face somewhere before. As she scrutinized his expression, what arrested her thought was the sadness that seemed to penetrate subtly from behind his eyes. She felt a strong chill at the core, far colder and gloomier than the weather outside. Jess tried to smile warmly as she clasped the boy's hand, hoping her little attempt at cheerful festivities would help to lighten his spirit.

Meanwhile, Bobble had noticed a strange purple bell hover towards his girlfriend, and moved swiftly to block the creature's path. "Why?" he asked, overly suspicious of the roguish smile the stranger wore.
