Manaphy The Fizzific Ocean

The Fizzific Ocean

It is said that more is known about the surface of the moon than the full extent of the ocean. The region of Fizzytopia is vast, filled with rich culture and a variety of civilizations, including several island colonies off its coast. However, the massive ocean that spans across its shores has seldom been traversed other than its bustling ports that are few and far between. Recent attempts by cartographers have hoped to capture a picture of a unified ocean, and in the process have discovered many beautiful ecosystems as a result. In order to appreciate this pristine beauty and promote conservation efforts, the Fizzytopian Coast Guard has paired with the nation’s Board of Tourism to provide a guide for travelers to enjoy.

Welcome to the Fizzific Ocean: a diverse oceanic paradise filled with a myriad of biomes and cultures about as numerous as stars in the sky. From tropical reefs to arctic tundra, the ocean is separated by powerful currents that serve as natural barriers for vastly different climates. These segmented seas are classified not only by longitude and latitude, but by the temperatures that circulate through the ocean currents and the types of organisms found inhabiting each ecosystem. The climates of each of these regions rarely fluctuate throughout the year, and because of this have been aptly named after each season.

Warm nutrient-rich waters swirl the Springtide Sea, making them the idea location for wild Pokemon to raise their young. The Summer Surf features a hotbed of activity, from massive waves to open ocean travelers. Cooler currents chill the Autumnal Tides, filled with many dark secrets and mysteries. The Polar Pelagic is isolated by freezing deep sea currents that only the hardiest inhabitants can handle.

The Springtide Sea
THE VERNAL COAST (Please reply in pink)
In a location where cold ocean currents meet warm currents, a small cluster of islands serves as a refuge for sea creatures all across the ocean in their annual breeding cycles. The blending of warm and cool currents acts as a proliferation of life in the nutrient-rich water while the land masses provide shelter from predators of the open seas. These havens have been established as nature reservations in order to maintain their pristine nature, so there are very few settlements on them. Tourism is still an integral part in the observation of this breathtaking ecosystem, but the Fizzytopian Coast Guard remains ever vigilant in maintaining the balance of nature.
Rendezvous Reef: A coral reef with water so clear it appears pink due to the coral visible from the water’s surface. All forms of life her have taken the same shade as a form of natural camouflage, from the Corsola to the various species of fish Pokemon and even Slowpoke that bask on the rocky outcrops above. Schools of Luvdisc swarm the waters, the inspiration behind the reef’s name. The Rendezvous Reef has become a Top 5 romantic getaway location in Fizzytopia for visitors all around the world, but also a spawning ground for sea creatures all across the ocean.

Laguna Marea: Isolated from the main shore, a small fishing village rests atop disjointed clusters of a mangrove forest, hardy trees that are able to take root in oceanic soil. Translating to ‘the tidal lagoon,’ Laguna Marea is known for its especially high tides. The villagers of Laguna Marea are very in tune with the ocean and its ebbs and flows, using canoes to travel between the groves. The thin needlelike roots of the mangrove trees serve as a shelter for juvenile sea creatures from ocean predators.

Springtide Isle: A diminutive volcanic seamount poking out of the ocean, the Springtide Isle is a tranquil little island with rich biodiversity and temperate climate year-round, making it an ideal nesting location for migratory Pokemon to lay their eggs. The Springtide Isle boasts warm, sandy beaches, picturesque scenery, and a welcoming Harborside Market whose main commerce consists of various products deriving from the inhabitants’ Alolan cultural heritage. The island is best known for its folk legend of the Springtime Pyukumuku, who is said to deliver eggs of exotic Pokemon to travelers every year.

THE MINNAO ISLES (Please reply in tomato)
A small archipelago of islands that surround a larger fish-shaped island, the Minnao Isles are haven to seafaring Pokemon and home to a tribe of very spiritual inhabitants. The island’s sheer pristine beauty has attracted a rapidly budding tourism industry, which has been met with mild apprehension by the native population, concerned that construction will disrupt the gentle balance of nature and wildlife. Despite the unease however, the natives of Minnao have generally been accommodating to visitors and taken part in opportunities for work in construction, fishing, and guiding sightseers. The island’s most prominent point is the Sea Altar atop Cordina’s Peak where Minnao’s inhabitants worship their god of the sea.
Cordina’s Peak: Located in the northern end of the island, Cordina’s Peak gets its name from a famous priestess and is the religious center of the Minnao people. People from various tribes often travel here to make offerings at a shrine to Manaphy for the health of their children or for good weather. Here, the current head priest, Holai, attempts to heal the bonds between people and Pokemon on the island. While there isn’t much fishing opportunity here, with the only water truly available in the shallow pools of the Sea Altar, the locals are sure to need help with the daily goings on in the village.

The Blue Valley: A little ways away from Cordina’s Peak, the valley formed by run- off from the water up top is filled mostly by an expansive river. Here, Pokemon are found on the shores of the river, and those willing to brave the waters to look into deep dwelling Pokemon must be careful for the winding rapids that happen downstream. Minnao teens often come into the valley searching for the Pokemon companion they bond with for life.

Orta Lake: In the middle of the island, Orta Lake rests as a natural freshwater habitat and is one of the most popular fishing spots on the island. Fishing operations as well as healthy fishing habits are led by expert guides here, operating from a small fishing shack near the lake. They are more than willing to show anyone, Minnao or traveler, the ropes of fishing.

New Redford Beachfront: The largest settlement on the island, New Redford can be found on the southern coast of the main island. It is a relatively small town, mostly consisting of small hotel, general stores, gift shops, and large port. Adjacent to town is a beach encompassing a massive inlet to the island, where most tourists spend their time in the gentle tides and bright sun. Any wild Pokemon are often nervous of the recent influx of people, and tend to stick to the deepest part of the waters or have fled to the outskirts of the beach. Minnao protesters can sometimes be found here protecting natural Pokemon habitats.

The Summer Surf
WHALE ISLAND (Please reply in deepskyblue)
The largest island in the ocean was formed by a cluster of volcanic seamounts that rose out of the water millennia ago. The landmass became aptly named Whale Island due to its semblance of a giant whale emerging from the water. Whale Island’s signature landmark is a dormant volcanic crater that formed a lake resembling a blowhole. The reservoir is supported by a Hydro-Electric Dam which supplies renewable clean energy to the bustling Pieli Harbor and Seaside City on the coast; a place renowned for its tourism and resorts. On the island’s farthest point, waterfalls cascade over an eroded cliff side onto a sinkhole below giving off the appearance of a whale’s fluke rising out of the water. An ancient structure constructed by the island's original inhabitants lies beneath the sea basin.
Seaside City: Built up over time, Seaside City has attracted quite a number of tourists as well as long-term residents. Both a large harbor and resort, It is now a sprawling city with all the trimmings, including shopping malls, schools, parks, industrial sector, and the best ice cream in the land. The Pieli Resort is archetypical of a seaside funfair, with several small rides as well as a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, though the promenade at night is most famously a sight to behold. Pieli Harbor is famous for its massive shipping stations as well as a booming fishing industry, with extensive piers for travelers to cast from.

Ampere Beach: The largest stretch of coastal sand in all of Fizzytopia, Ampere Beach is famed for its sand, which contains a mild electrical current that soothes the body. This charge is the result of the high salinity content, combined with the naturally high electricity from the central region, providing an insulating ground for the static. As a result, the beach is often used in therapeutics, evident at the resort in Seaside City. Bioluminescent algae causes the waves to glow a vibrant blue at night, one of the most breathtaking sights in all of Fizzytopia.

Hydro-Electric Reservoir: Atop the island’s highest peak, a dormant volcanic crater has filled up with water and formed a lake, several dozen million cubic feet in volume. The reservoir is supported by a massive dam that channels clean water and generates electricity for the entire island. Chosen due to it being a renewable source of clean energy, the dam has become a popular tourist attraction in its own right. Its rich power source attracts a large variety of electric Pokemon to the area.

Orcain Catacombs: Beneath the cliffs and cascading waterfalls of the island’s farthest tip, a sunken hole in the ocean lies an odd and mighty statue of the legendary Pokémon of the sea, Kyogre. The statue itself is the entrance to the Orcain Catacombs, a labyrinth of underwater tunnels and caves located beneath the peninsula. It is very easy to become lost in the catacombs, and the reports of the cries of the lost emerging from the catacombs have deterred many from visiting what could be the most dangerous place in the peninsula.

ORGI TOU ΩKEANOS: The Ocean's Wrath (Please reply in steelblue)
Deep in the heart of the ocean sits a chain of underwater seamounts that form a serpentine reef. While most of the shoals lie under the surface of the water, thin strips of land breech the waves in a shape that greatly resembles a sea serpent. Descendants of ancient Greca have settled here, calling this land ‘Orgi tou Ωkeanos,’ or ‘The Ocean’s Wrath.’ While the locals are very hospitable people and the reef very serene, the name serves a deeper reverence of nature; the locals are passionate about being respectful to the ocean and returning whatever they harvest back to nature lest they anger the ancient deities. The main settlement forms the shape of a dragon’s head; the eye punctuated by a bottomless sinkhole, an extensive kelp forest forming its mane, while deep sea currents batter against the lower jawline to form the best surfing spot in all of Fizzytopia.
Typhon’s Gaze: At the head of the serpentine reef is an atoll that pierces straight into the ocean floor below. The locals refer to this as Typhon’s Gaze; a representation of the folklore of a serpentine deity with a piercing eye that can be seen from the heavens. The reef surrounding it is filled with beautiful crystal blue water, so clear that you can see the reef from the surface. However, the middle of the atoll is what has been classified as a Blue Hole; a sinkhole that dips down deep into the cavernous ocean floor below. No one knows what’s at the bottom of the hole, but draconic Pokemon seem to be attracted to the area. This site marks the location of the Typhon’s Depths Gym, and a small floating cabin serves as a research hub and resting place for travelers.

Delphyne’s Mane: Northwest of Typhon’s Gaze is a stretch of ocean that is covered by one of the largest kelp forests in all of Fizzytopia. The bright sunlight and nutrient rich, clear waters serves as the perfect incubator for algae, causing the kelp beds to bloom. Many Pokemon take shelter in the dense seaweeds, as well as many predators who relish the perfect environment to ambush their prey. It is very unwise to sail a boat here, as many have been known to become stranded when their propellers become tabled by thick kelp. Some local legends even tell tales of the kelp having a mind of its own and snatching careless swimmers down into the depths below.

Tiamat’s Roar: Strong ocean currents rise from the south, and the oceanic ridge just below the serpent’s jaw serves as a barrier for the rest of the reef. A namesake from their ancient ancestors, the Grecan settlement of New Cabrys can be found here on the rocky shoals, living purely off the sea around them. Because of the steep breaker waves and powerful current, it is extremely dangerous to dive underwater or sail boats around here, though the people of New Cabrys have managed to craft many ways to fish the nutrient-rich water. While the remote location is not a huge tourist attraction, it has become known within the surfing community as the best surfing spot in all of Fizzytopia. Many locals have taken up the pastime as well, and some have opted to make a living off of teaching others how to surf.

The Autumnal Tides
THE OCEAN OF MYSTERY (Please reply in mediumaquamarine)
Living up to its name, the Ocean of Mystery is a section of seas that are shrouded in the unknown and the origin of countless tales of supernatural incidents that scientists have had a hard time explaining. Many ships’ navigational gear have been known to malfunction when nearing the area, and stories of ships who enter the sea disappearing completely have circulated the ports. Because of this, major shipping routes steer clear of this sea leaving travel by Pokemon as the most reliable way to navigate the area. This sea is not for the faint of heart, and many who have returned have been known to spout absurd tales of spotting things that are vastly out of place from this part of the world. Travelers should enter at their own risk; a search party likely won’t be coming.
Celestial Shipwreck: It was supposed to be a relaxing luxury cruise. However, on that fateful day over ten years ago, the passengers mysteriously found themselves back on solid ground, and the 800 passenger vessel was nowhere to be found. Years later, an ocean diver discovered a massive cruise-liner resting on the ocean floor: the SS Tidal. There were hardly any signs of a crash, but the ship’s condition has deteriorated and rusted over the years. How it ended up here, no one knows, but teams of scientists have embarked on expeditions to research and look for clues. Some have even come to loot and salvage whatever they can find amongst the cabins.

Mirage Island: One of the most fabled islands in the history of the Pokemon world is that of Mirage Island; a small island oasis said to appear before weary, delirious sailors behind a shroud of thick fog and swirling whirlpools. According to old sailor accounts, a number of spirits inhabit the land, hiding behind illusions in the mist. The island has been described to be a small hill covered in grass and trees, as well as an ancient shrine to a sea goddess. It should surely make for a fantastic story to tell, if you can find it, that is.

The Spatial Abyss: Settled in the deepest and most isolated undersea trench in the Ocean of Mystery rests a tall statue of the legendary Pokemon Palkia. It’s a mystery how such a massive sculpture ended up there in the first place, but what’s even stranger is the environment surrounding it. An incredible ripple of spatial distortion surrounds the area like a bubble, water molecules have been spread so far out that there is a breathable atmosphere. The pitch black sea glitters with the lights of bioluminescent creatures, like stars in the sky. An unearthly soil covers the ground and a myriad of alien-like sea creatures float through the air.

THE DIRE STRAIT (Please reply in lightseagreen)
The consequence of the rise of civilization stems from mankind’s attempts to tame the natural world. The industrial age and growth of capitalism has taken its toll on these waters; a once pristine ecosystem has been completely destroyed by pollution and the traffic caused by large ocean cargo ships. The harbor of New Fizz City, the largest metropolitan area in Fizzytopia, is a marvel of human ingenuity, but it came at a cost. Coral reefs that were once filled with life now act as a cemetery for the ocean’s remains. While the Fizzytopian government has made many attempts to try and restore the ecosystem in recent years, an abandoned oil rig in the middle of the bay serves as a permanent reminder of the damage that has been done.
The Rusted Refuge: As the largest commercial and industrial port in the region, the Fizzby Harbor’s shipping channel is a gateway for innumerable amount of commerce that flows in and out of New Fizz City. Possessing one of the highest volumes of oceanic traffic in the world, the water has become utterly contaminated with pollution, where only the fiercest and hardiest of life can survive. Resting in the middle of the channel is an abandoned deep sea oil drilling rig formerly known as the Oceanic Vantage. Once the site of a terrible oil spill, it has since fallen into ruin and become a haven to Pokemon who can withstand the toxic environment. Pokemon living on the rig as well as the ones lurking beneath the waves will defend their home from encroaching humans at all costs.

Beacon’s Bluff: Just a short way down the coast from New Fizz City’s Cape Effervescence, the metropolis’s shipping channel opens up into the greater ocean. The shorelines are rocky and powerful oceanic currents pose a dangerous threat for ships trying to reach the harbor, so the location serves as the ideal placement for a lighthouse to help guide ships safely into port. The lighthouse is also headquarters to the Fizzytopian Coast Guard who patrol these waters for illegal activity and deploy oceanic rescue missions. It is unwise to traverse these waters without proper training, but the Coast Guard does offer informal training drills for swimming and diving in these treacherous seas.

Coral Crypt: Several nautical miles off the coast of the Fizzby Harbor lies a once flourishing coral reef. However, due to decades of pollution and trash dumped into the sea by humans, all that is left are the bleached skeletal remains. Because of this, sea creatures have been observed voyaging from all across the ocean to lay here as their final resting place. Now, the enormous carcass of a Wailord decorates the seafloor, providing shelter to those brave enough to stop for a rest. The stench of death has permeated the ocean, and now the only signs of life that can be found here are scavengers and predators looking for a quick meal.

The Polar Pelagic
GLACIER ISLAND (Please reply in lightblue)
One of the oldest and yet least explored islands of Fizzytopia is not an island at all; Glacier Island is in fact a large iceberg that has maintained its form for decades without melting. Whether this is because of its location in the cooler ocean currents to the south, or because of some unknown mystery that has yet to be uncovered has not been determined, but researchers have been stationed here for years trying to uncover that answer. The area is a haven to ice type Pokemon, as well as the site of the most breathtaking auroras in the night skies.
Crystal City: The prominent port of Glacier Island, Crystal City is the sole economic center of the entire island. Fishing is the primary industry here, but its location serves as the perfect shipping and storage hub for ocean voyagers in need of refueling. Many hungry seabirds circle the fishing harbor for an easy meal. For the tourists who do venture this far south, Crystal City is equipped with all of the technological comforts that visitors desire, and a luxurious Ice Hotel serves as the place to visit.

Alpha Research Station: Many scientists have come to Glacier Island from all across the world in order to study its peculiar ecology. In order to collaborate as much information as possible, the Alpha Research Station was established in order to do just that. Scientists assist one another in all schools of thought, whether it be observing the ecosystem around them, the weather patterns above, the natural wildlife in the area, among many other topics. The research base is located in the middle of an icy plains, but protective domes shield the research tents from the elements.

The Frosty Floes: Off the coast of Glacier Island and far from Crystal City’s port is a blanket of ice floes that dredge the shoreline. The thick layer of ice makes it impossible for ships to pass through the area, allowing the natural wildlife to thrive. Many aquatic Pokemon that are able to withstand the freezing temperature call this area home, most of which rest on top of the ice in countless numbers. Most of the Pokemon here love to play and are not afraid of humans, but will fiercely defend their young if they have to.

The Boreal Basin: Deep in the heart of Glacier Island are a series of deep pools of water collected from the ice around the area as well as precipitation in the air. For some reason, these pools never freeze over, but studies have always come up inconclusive when testing the chemical composition of the water. A large structure made out of ice watches over the area like a guardian; many locals have claimed it possesses many canid features and some even say it resembles the legendary Pokemon Suicune, a claim further enhanced by the purity of the pools of water and the location being regarded as the best spot on the island for observing auroras.

ARCTIC ARCHIPELAGO (Please reply in white)
The Arctic Archipelago is an unforgiving, remote stretch of ocean due to the polar climate and freezing ocean currents. Land is few and far between, and volcanic seamounts that do breach the surface are rocky and devoid of much vegetation, making it near impossible for civilization to take root. Because this area is so isolated, it’s unwise to camp out here alone; if a traveler were to disappear here, it could take weeks for their absence to be noticed. However, those who are brave enough to embark into the ruthless wilderness may just find a hidden diamond in the rough to make the experience worth their while.
Rime Reef: Despite the freezing climate of the southernmost section of the ocean, a small stretch of seabed near the Arctic Archipelago features one of the ocean’s most breathtaking coral reefs. Unlike most reefs that showcase a kaleidoscope of colorful coral, the Rime Reef is an image of white; instead of relying on photosynthesizing algae for energy, life in these arctic waters are sustained by nutrients and heat provided by hydrothermal vents. What really causes this reef to stand out are the vents that are spread out all across the area and slowly release bubbles into the water that trickle up to the surface like snowfall in reverse. The ocean floor is teeming with life due to the warmth provided by the vents, making it a true underwater winter wonderland.

Hoarfrost Hotspot: One small island in this chain of rocky islets is a hotbed for geothermal springs, covering the island in a shroud of steam. The Hoarfrost Hotspot has become a rather warm and welcoming oasis in an otherwise chilling and inhospitable climate. Because of this, the island is a haven for fire type Pokemon as well as a resting place for oceanic travelers who are not suited to colder temperatures. Despite its remote location, the island also features a prominent hot spring inn run by an elderly couple from Hoenn. The property has been in their family for generations and runs on completely self-sustaining energy from a water mill. Those who soak in these relaxing waters may be joined by wild Pokemon, who are more than happy to share.

Isle of Always Winter: Inhospitable to humans, the Isle of Always Winter is a small rocky island covered in ice and dominated by wildlife. Food resources on this island are very limited, and because the ecosystem is so strongly driven by the hierarchy of the food chain, almost everything here will fight tooth and nail to get their next meal. At the top of the food chain is a Pokemon known as the Snorlax King; lording over the wildlife with an iron stomach and forcing others to forage for it in exchange for protection.

Having been back in Fizzytopia for a month or so, Zak had found himself quick to assimilate back in to the way of things despite the years since his last visit. He had spent the bulk of his time in the ancient woodland of the Arboreal Cradle as well as signing up and getting involved with a number of Raids alongside fellow plucky trainers. In more recent times, he had vouched to help out a misunderstood Professor and his problem getting the world to believe in his Pumpkasaur breakthroughs and in the process he had reunited with an old friend who he never thought he would encounter again. The visit so far had been a busy and rather eventful one and the man was thankful for that but it still felt as though there was something missing. Though he had recently acquired an egg from pairing his Taillow with another trainer's Honchkrow, he couldn't remember the last time he had gone out and caught a Pokémon to add to his roster. That was what had brought him on his trip to the Minnao Isles.

The man had settled on Minnao as his destination after seeing a feature all about the Fizzific Ocean and its various isles on the television. He hadn't realised the sheer diversity of places that one could head out and visit in the Fizzific Ocean before watching the special but found himself enchanted at all the impressive locales. A couple of areas in particular had caught his eye in the documentary: the Rendezvous Reef looked gorgeous. If he had a man in his life, this would have been the perfect getaway spot for the two - it was supposedly in the top five romantic getaways in the region and there was no surprise why as it looked simply divine. Another area that had piqued the man's interest, though, was The Blue Valley on Minnao. A short hike from a tall peak by the name of Cordina, a powerful river ebbed and flowed the length of the valley. As part of the documentary, there was a short segment about how Minnao teens were known to travel to the valley in search of lifelong friends in the form of their first Pokémon. Seeing this had reminded him of when he first met Nancy the Venusaur as a Bulbasaur and how the two had become quite inseparable. In fact, even to this day, the man seldom travelled anywhere without her nestled safe inside her Leaf Ball at his hip.

The trip was a fairly uneventful one with the man chartering a fishing boat from the mainland to give his Pidgeot the day off. He could have surfed to the island on one of his other Pokémon but he knew the area he was heading to was known for its currents and winding rapids and preferred to keep their strength up as well. Having spent the majority of the trip in a deep slumber, Zak felt rather groggy as he pressed on along the path that should take him towards the Blue Valley. As he walked, he started to wonder about the sorts of Pokémon or people he might encounter once he found himself exploring the valley: if the area was famed for connecting man and 'mon, he was sure it wouldn't be all too long before he encountered one or the other.

When Xander flew over the isles, he couldn't help but be astonished by the fascinating shape that they formed. He'd been to Ocean's Wrath before, but his time there had been concentrated purely on the Typhon's Depths Gym Raids. Fly in, fly out, he'd never really explored everything the isle had to offer. After the shadowed forests of the Arboreal Cradle and the dark city streets of New Fizz City, Xander figured a good douse of vitamin D would do him a world of good. While he'd mostly gotten over his recent torment, he was only just beginning to rediscover himself. A bit of sun and fun could only be of benefit to his recovery.

Water splashed up over his face as Empoleon cut through the waves. The Sinnoh Starter was great to Surf on, reliable and smooth even when the water started to get a bit rough. While Xander had spent plenty of time mastering the art of balancing on the Steel type's back, Pichu was still getting the hang of this surfing thing. Standing on Empoleon's left wing, the little electric mouse looked a bit unsteady, but it had come a long way already. They'd been following the coast line most of the morning, but something in the distance alerted Xander. "Stop Empoleon", he ordered and the penguin slowly came to a stop. "See the water getting darker ahead, I think we've reached the kelp forest, Delphyne’s Mane", Xander was wary of heading into the mane. While he was confident Empoleon would be more than capable of cutting itself loose should they become entangled, the kelp forest could easily be concealing many a threat. "We'll head to shore and see if we can find any locals, they'll know this place better than anyone." Empoleon angled back towards shore. His trainer was being cautious, a new trait he'd only recently developed.....

I christen this zone officially open with its first updates! lol

Pearl’s Perap:
The sun shone brightly over Minnao Isle; the perfect weather to embark on a new journey, as Zak experienced while trekking across the Blue Valley. A cool breeze offset the heat of the sun, and the sound of water flowing down from Cordina’s Peak was soothing to anyone’s ears. The scenery was exactly as advertised on the television program, a good sign for Zak who had travelled a long way to get here.

As he made his way across the valley, a commotion in the distance caught Zak’s attention. By the side of the river there were a cluster of tents, as if some kind of small festival was going on. Curious to see what the fuss was all about, Zak headed over in that direction to get a better look. Upon closer inspection, the majority of the tents seemed to be food stalls, and the sweet and savory scents of confectionaries and various other fried festival foods filled the air. Most of the commotion seemed to be centered on a large gathering in the middle, surrounding what appeared to be a fight ring.

“Welcome!” a native Minnaoan woman greeted Zak from what looked like a reception table. “I bet you’re wondering what’s going on here, huh?” Without missing a beat, the woman continued, “This is the annual Duckfest tournament! You see, many of the bird Pokemon around here can be quite territorial for the best nesting grounds, so every year they compete for the honor of being recognized by the Swanna queen. Please, feel free to take a look around and enjoy!”

Zak smiles and nods, walking away from reception in the direction of the fight ring. It seems like a battle is already going on as a Psyduck faces off against a Farfetch’d. The ring is surrounded by both native inhabitants and tourists alike, all cheering for the action at hand. The Psyduck seems to have the upper hand as it keeps the Farfetch’d at bay with its Water Guns, but the Farfetch’d turns the tables with its aerial precision, finishing the Psyduck off with a swift Leaf Blade from its leek. The crowd erupts as the Farfetch’d is declared the winner. The Farfetch’d is recalled into its Pokeball from a trainer that was standing at the edge of the ring while the Psyduck was carried off by a pair of Duckletts.

“Both wild Pokemon and captured Pokemon can participate, but ones that have partnered with a trainer always have the upper hand,” a small native boy beside Zak explained. Zak hadn’t noticed the boy appear, but looked down as he spoke up. The boy looked to be about nine or ten years old, wearing a tank top and athletic shorts with a pair of sandals on his feet. His skin was tan from playing out under the tropical sun and his brown hair was short and messy. He had a couple of baby teeth missing that hadn’t been replaced yet. “My name’s Hiru, what’s yours? My mom says I’m too young to have a Pokemon yet, but I still like to come and watch the battles.” Across the ring, some people were writing on a sign post that listed a bunch of names and numbers. “People like to bet on the matches,” Hiru explained, “But they’re still doing the warm up battles first. The actual tournament will start soon.” It looked like another fight was about to start soon; Zak could stay and watch it or he could go look around elsewhere if he wished.

Xander sailed across the waves of the Typhon’s Reef atop his Empoleon’s back. Pichu did its best to try and maintain its balance on top of one of Empoleon’s wings while the giant metallic emperor penguin effortlessly glided across the surface of the water as if it were flying. Despite having been in the area several times before, Xander was still unfamiliar with these seas. Because of this, he ordered his Pokemon to halt when he spotted the darker patch of water up ahead. He had heard stories about the kelp forest of Delphyne’s Mane and ocean travelers getting entangled in the thick kelp. He was eager to check the area out, but wisely decided it was best to seek out a local to guide him. If he were to disappear with no supervision, who knew when his body would be found.

With that in mind, Xander and his Pokemon Surfed towards the shore of New Cabrys, an antiquated settlement located on the rocky outcroppings of the reef. The people were deeply rooted with their history and the nature around them, living completely self-sustainable from the outside world. However, they welcomed tourists with open arms, developing a booming surfing community at the massive ocean swells by the settlement’s southern shore. In the northern reef where Xander presently was, the waters were much more tranquil as the land that separated the opposing shores acted as a natural breaker from oceanic currents.

Xander could soon enough spot houses atop the rocks in the distance; the uniform Cycladic architecture of white cubic houses in a row made them seem almost like a fortress. The shoreline was mostly walled by rocky cliffs, but there were a few small areas that dipped down to pebbled beaches where fishing piers had been built up. Heading to one such area, Xander set foot on land and began to look around as his two Pokemon accompanied him. Since they were on the north side, there weren’t many surfers around; most of the commerce around here had been set up as a place to gut and clean fish as well as a marketplace to sell them. There were a couple of locals sitting on the dock with fishing rods in hand, but neither of them seemed interested in paying any mind to the traveler. Xander thought about approaching one of the fishermen, but was unsure how they would feel about him bugging them while they were busy. His other option would be to venture further into the marketplace, but as he turned in that direction, he spotted a girl in her late teens sneaking around atop a precariously narrow rocky wall right above the shoreline. She seemed to look like she knew what she was doing, but one wrong step and she might be a goner. Dare Xander pursue the girl or keep looking around for a guide?

They'd made it to shore without much trouble. He was thankful for the calm sea, even with Empoleon he didn't like his chances in a rough sea. New Cabrys was still a bit of a walk away, he'd hoped to find someone nearby to help him out on the Mane but if he had to he'd make the trek. The docks weren't exactly bustling with activity, a few stray fisherman were focused solely on their lures, Xander dared not disturb them. Even though the people here were meant to be incredibly friendly to tourists, he knew better than to spook a fisherman, else he might end up on the wrong end of a hook....

Looking up the path towards the marketplace, Xander's eyes drifted across to spot a girl precariously navigating her way along a narrow rock wall. "Damn, she's got some balls", Xander murmured to Empoleon and Pichu. Empoleon nodded in agreement, he was likewise impressed by the girl's bravery. "Now would it be brave of me to follow her, or foolish?" Xander questioned openly, because he honestly didn't know how to proceed. He'd become a lot more cautious of late, part of it was self doubt, part of it was his own maturity. Thankfully, Pichu made the decision for him. The Electric type was already scrambling up to the start of the rock wall! Xander sighed. The Pichu reminded him a lot of how he used to be, carelessly charging in, headstrong and confident he could overcome anything. Perhaps he could become that person again, in time....

"Looks like we're going after her, but that doesn't mean we have to do so without caution. Empoleon follow us in the water, should any of us fall, it'll be on you to soften the blow with Bubble Beam." Empoleon nodded, remaining behind as Xander took off in pursuit of Pichu and the girl.

The actual tournament will start soon.” It looked like another fight was about to start soon; Zak could stay and watch it or he could go look around elsewhere if he wished.
Glad we could help get this show on the road!

Minnao was just as beautiful as Zak imagined it would be and he felt like he had made the right choice as he wandered towards the Blue Valley, the sun warming his skin and a slight breeze to make things just right. Not too far from the man, the sounds of the river flowing from Cordina's Peak could be heard; even though he couldn't see it meandering, he could sense the majesty that the river held as he heard it rushing amongst the rock nearby.

It wasn't long until a gathering up ahead caught the trainer's eye: there appeared to be a festival or a fair of some kind happening. Spotting the numerous tents that were set up first, Zak set off in the direction of the gathered Minnaons. As he got closer to the tents, it quickly became clear that the majority of these were food vendors, the scents of fried foods wafted away from the group and quickly found his nostrils. The food from the various stalls smelled delicious, whatever it happened to be. Resisting the need to follow his nose towards the delicacies, the man noticed what the tents were gathered around: a fight ring had been set up.

Before Zak could approach the battle ground for a closer look, a local woman sat behind what the man assumed was a registration desk called over to him. As he sidled towards the desk, it must have been clear on his face that he didn't have a clue where he was as the Minnoan started to explain at once: the man had found himself arriving upon the island's annual Duckfest. Each year, the avians of the Minnoan Isles find themselves competing for the very best nesting grounds and this tournament was one way to ensure that they sealed the best spot. Not only that, the winner would also be crowned the Swanna queen.

"Wow, this definitely sounds like my kind of party!" Zak chuckled as the registrar finished her explanation. For as long as he could remember, he had been a big fan of all things feathered. He even had a number of his own waterfowl companions who would fit the bill; Lily the Swanna who he had received in a trade some years ago, a Fartetch’d from the Kanto region and a baby Psyduck he had recently obtained from a friend. Though she didn't offer to sign the man up, the lady motioned towards their surroundings, offering the trainer the chance to take a look around and get a feel for the festival that was underway.

Walking from the registration desk to the ring side, the man noticed that a battle was already underway between two birds and managed to squeeze between the spectators to get a better view of their bout. On one side stood a Kantonian Farfetch'd, leek brandished and ready to go. On the other side, a Psyduck started to unleash torrents of water at its opponent with little stopping. Seemingly having the upper hand, the Duck Pokémon continued his assault, sure he was going to defeat the Farfetch'd. The tide quickly turns though as the Farfetch'd uses its aerial aptitude to dip and dodge before unleashing a powerful Leaf Blade. With this move, the crowd erupts: the Farfetch'd had won the battle. As he joined in with the cheers and woops, Zak watched on as two Ducklett marched in to take the wild Psyduck away, presumably back to the river.

Wholeheartedly distracted by the battling birds, Zak hadn't noticed a young boy had approached his side. The lad looked to be about nine or ten and had the sun-kissed look of a child that spent most of their days out in the tropical sun. The boy went on to introduce himself as Hiru and explained a little bit more about the tournament to the man. It turned out that both wild and trainer-raised Pokémon could enter; that explained the Psyduck being dragged away and not returning to its trainer. He also explained to the man why there was so many people gathered at a board set up nearby: there was quite the betting scene attached to the festival but this didn't interest Zak nearly as much as the battling. He had never been much of a gambler and he wasn't exactly flush right now anyway.

"Hey Hiru, it's nice to meet you. I know you don't have your own Pokémon yet but if you say wild Pokémon can enter, we could always see if we can find you a willing partner for the day?" Zak smiled down at the boy as he spoke, he never liked when adults didn't treat him like a real person when he was small and he wanted to make sure he didn't make the boy feel that way, "If not, I don't mind you lending one of my birds. What do you think?"

As the man waited for the boy's response, he imagined Lily donning a tiara and wielding a sceptre bestowed upon her by the Swanna Queen herself. That was if he didn't join Hiru and try to seek out one of the avians native to Minnao to team up with instead.

As he scanned the harbor for a suitable guide, Xander spotted a teenage girl walking down a very precarious path. The girl seemed very much lost in her own thoughts as Pichu chased after her. Xander orders Empoleon to follow from the coast, to act as a safety net in the worst case scenario, before following in pursuit himself. As he approached the girl, Pichu jumped up onto the girl’s shoulder, causing her to jump in surprised. Miraculously, the girl landed on the heel of her sandal and pirouetted around before gracefully tip-toeing a few steps forward to regain her balance.

“Holy shit,” she exclaimed as Xander caught up, pulling a pair of cordless ear buds out of her ears. “You scared the shit out of me!” She reached a well-manicured hand up to pet Pichu on the head. “I’m guessing you were concerned for my safety though, thanks,” she smiled. Upon closer inspection, Xander could tell that the girl was breathtakingly beautiful, likely the prettiest girl on the small island. Her long chestnut colored hair was tied up in a ponytail and ended in loose curls. She wore a sleeveless white parka unzipped partly to reveal a blue bikini underneath. A pair of cutoff denim shorts completed her ensemble along with an assortment of gold bracelets and necklace. Her jewelry was encrusted with some small sapphires and gave the appearance that they were more unique to her cultural heritage than just some fashion accessory.

At the same time, the girl was taking in Xander. “I’m guessing you’re not from around these parts… and you don’t look like a tourist surfer either. My name’s Lyra, what brings you here?” she asked while introducing herself, not shy or short on confidence. Lyra smiled and waited for Xander’s answer, still scratching Pichu on the chin.

Pearl’s Perap:
There was a lot to take in as Zak explored the Duckfest, and he was thankful for the information provided by Hiru. He offered to let the youngster enter the competition with one of his several waterfowl Pokemon, but the young boy politely declined. “Thanks for the offer, but it’s a rite of passage here that our first Pokemon battle is spent with our first Pokemon. My mom says that I’m two years too young to get a Pokemon yet… I think you should enter though if you’re interested in the tournament!”

Hiru smiled as the participants of the next preliminary match took the ring. In one corner was a trainer and his Ducklett. The crowd seemed pretty excited for their arrival. “That’s Drake Mallard, he’s one of the favorites to win it all,” Hiru explained. The opponent climbed into the other side of the ring to little to no fanfare. It was a Farfetch’d, but its plumage was darker than normal, and it seemed a bit bulkier and slower than a normal Farfetch’d. Most notable of all about it was the leek it carried, much larger than the size one would typically expect a Farfetch’d to carry. The duck was all by itself in the corner, and no one seemed too interested in giving it any support. “Looks like another easy warm up for Drake,” Hiru mused.

The match started and Drake Mallard immediately flapped his wings and charged at his opponent. Drake slammed into the Farfetch’d with a powerful Wing Attack, to which the wild duck was barely able to react and block with its unwieldy leek. The Farfetch’d then attempted to counter and swing at Drake, but the heavy leek was far too slow for the agile Ducklett’s reflexes. Drake simply pushed the Farfetch’d back to the edge of the ring with a Water Gun and then took to the air once more. “Oh! He’s about to use his finishing move!” Hiru called out in excitement.

Farfetch’d stood up in defiance, bracing for impact, but it was impossible to tell which direction Drake was coming from with his Aerial Ace precision. Farfetch’d held up his leek to shield the blow, and a crack echoed throughout the ring as Drake came in with contact. The crowd erupted and Drake was declared the winner. Farfetch’d was struggling to get back to its feet, and as a pair of Duckletts offered to help it out of the ring, the Farfetch’d swatted them away with its wing. It reached for its leek only to find it in two pieces. Through the excitement of the tournament favorite picking up a big victory, the look of utter dejection and loss on the Farfetch’d beak was barely noticed as it scooped up the remains of its leek and slipped out of the ring unnoticed.

“C’mon mister, let’s go check out the rest of the contestants!” Hiru led Zak over to a covered tent where a few trainers seemed to be filing in and out of. Inside the tent, Zak could spot countless waterfowl, some with their partnered trainers and some by themselves. The mostly seemed to be doing warm up stretches for their upcoming matches. “Look, there’s Quackie Chan,” Hiru whispered as he pointed at a Psyduck. “And there’s Duck Ellington!” he pointed at a Farfetch’d who was holding its leek like a musical instrument. There was some stiff competition here alright, but something else caught Zak’s eye. In the far back of the tent was the darker Farfetch’d all by itself, attempting to tape its leek back together and failing horribly at it.

"Pichu wait!" It was too late, the electric mouse leapt up onto the girl's shoulder. Xander braced for the worst but was pleasantly surprised as the girl spun, elegantly steadying herself despite the shocking surprise. The fright barely seemed to effect her, but upon seeing her, Xander lost his breath....

Xander did his best not to stare as the breath taking beauty introduced herself as Lyra. She was adored from head to toe, something about her told Xander she wasn't just some run of the mill villager. "Ahhh, umm", Xander mumbled, "yeah wouldn't call myself a surfer, but my Empoleon and I do alrght." Xander pointed down at Empoleon who was starting up at them from the sea below. "I'm just your run of the mill Pokemon trainer, Xander's my name. I've been around the region, been here a couple of times as well but I've never really ventured outside the Typhon's Depth's Gym. Seen my fair share of shit lately so I just wanted to get back to the basics, a bit of sunshine, a bit of adventuring, maybe help out where I can. No saving the world level stuff though, someone else can handle that crap." Xander grinned awkwardly, hand reaching up to make sure his hair was brushed to the side. "So is there a reason you're out here on this rock wall or do you just like adrenaline rush? I don't suppose you know your way around the Mane? I was looking to head out there but heard it can be a bit treacherous if you don't know what you're doing.

Lyra’s eyes lit up as she listened to Xander ramble on about his adventures and she held back a wry smile as he mentioned the Typhon’s Depths Gym. By the time he got to mention his goal of visiting Delphyne’s Mane, the gears were already turning in her head. Xander had asked her what she was doing up on this dangerous pathway, but the girl deflected, jumping down from the wall and grabbed his hand. “The Mane? Of course! Let’s go!”

She skipped ahead of Xander back down the cobbled pathway towards the fishing pier. However, right as she was about to step out into the marketplace, Lyra froze. She quickly pressed her back up against the wall of a building and propped her foot up against it, not unintentionally showing off her leg in the process. In a lowered voice but not quite an unnatural whisper, she asked Xander, “So you said visit the Gaze much? What’s the Gym Leader like? I haven’t gotten to see him too much since he arrived in the area…” Her eyes darted towards the market square as a couple of people walked past, heading deeper into the town. “C’mon, tell me more as we ride out there!”

Lyra briskly walked towards the fishing pier where Xander originally arrived. Empoleon was waiting for them on the shore. The pair of fishermen looked up as they arrived. “Hey Nico, Yanni! George said he caught a 50 kilo Seaking on the south pier earlier!” The two fishermen immediately grumbled and stood up, reeling in their lines. “What? That bastard’s lying!” one of them exclaimed and the two of them briskly left to go investigate. Lyra grinned and walked to the edge of the pier, untying a motorized dinghy that was moored to the dock.

“Alright, let’s go!” Lyra called out to Xander as she sat down on the edge of the pier and lowered herself into the boat. She reached underneath a compartment and procured a key, sticking it into the ignition. As the motor whirred to life, she called up to Xander, “Hey man, you coming?”

Lyra seemed to be hanging off of his words, that was a positive, right? As confident as she was, Xander couldn't help but feel like there was something secretive about her. She immediately deflected when he asked why she was up on the wall and seemed overly eager to get off of the island.

As they were about to enter the marketplace, Lyra threw herself up against a wall. Was she hiding from someone? After she'd just been up on rock wall for everyone to see? She questioned him about the Typhon's Depths Gym Leader as she peered across the marketplace. "Ahhh, yeah, Gary's a pretty cool guy, we actually...." The coast was clear apparently as Lyra took off again.

Back on the fishing pier, Lyra was quick to do what Xander wouldn't, disturb the fisherman. She spun an obvious lie about a massive Seaking, although it was enticing enough for the two fisherman to change their fishing spot. They now had the dock to themselves and Lyra was quick to hop into a nearby boat, finding the key with surprising ease. "This isn't your boat, is it?" Xander questioned as he climbed in. He wasn't too concerned at this point, Lyra was a local after all, she probably knew the owner. Pichu leapt back over to him as he took a seat, while Empoleon had already climbed out of the water and made his way over to the boat as well. "Oh yeah, I was telling you about Gym Leader Gary. We've actually done quite a few raids together, some here and even some at my father's gym. We also had a bit of a mix up at the Hatchery a while back which led to the creation of these Primordial Fish Beasts, they're pretty intense...." Xander wasn't sure what sort of trouble he was getting himself into here, but it seemed harmless. His goal when he came to shore was to find a local to show him around the Mane, it seemed like he'd achieved it!

Wandering around the gathering that was Minnao's annual Duckfest, Hiru was quick to decline Zak's offer of helping him to find someone to enter the tournament with. He was too young, Zak knew this already but he couldn't resist the thought of inspiring another future trainer of the feathered kind. Though the youngster was not planning on entering, he encouraged the man he was guiding through the tournament grounds.

"You know, Hiru, that's not a bad idea at all."

With his decision made, the man and his young companion trailed their attention back to the battlefield where the next warm-up match was about to begin. On one end of the ring stood a trainer and his Ducklett; the young cygnet by the name of Drake Mallard was supposedly the favourite to win the whole event according to Hiru. The man knew that Swanna could be temperamental but he had only ever encountered young and innocent Ducklett - the thought of one kicking the rest of the flock to the kerb and taking the crown was a rather amusing image.

On the opposite end of the battlefield, Drake's sparring partner entered the fray to little attention from the gathering crowd. Clearly they were here to support the Ducklett and his trainer and not the apparently wild Galarian Farfetch'd that had wandered onto the field. Unlike Zak's Farfetch'd and the bird from the previous warm-up, this Farfetch'd was heavier-set and looked even more ready for wing-to-wing combat, its impressive leek swaying as he waddled. Kantonian Farfetch'd could pack a mean punch with their leek so the man didn't doubt an even bigger leek being wielded by a bulkier bird would deliver an even harsher blow. Despite this, Hiru believed the battle would be a breeze for Drake Mallard.

Quietly supporting the Galarian Farfetch'd, Zak watched as the battle they were poised to watch began. In seconds, Drake had swooped at the Wild Duck Pokémon, slamming into it with a powerful Wing Attack which was barely met by the unwieldly leek in the Farfetch'd's wing. Attempting a retaliative attack, the Farfetch'd swung it's leek towards the Ducklett but it was simply no use - Drake deftly dodged the vegetable and unleashed his next attack, pushing the Farfetch'd back towards the edge of the battlefield with jets of Water Gun. Though the man had doubted Drake beforehand, he was clearly quite the contender and he watched in awe as the cygnet flew up ready for another assault. This was to be his finishing move, according to Hiru. He was absolutely correct as he watched the Farfetch'd unable to spot his opponent as he employed his precision on the wing, dealing a harsh Aerial Ace attack to the Wild Duck.

"Looks like everything is over for ol' Farfetch'd...Zak muttered to himself as the final attack made its impact with a deafening crack. The crowd around the two had erupted in loud cheers at the victory of Drake Mallard but the man noticed that something on the battlefield was wrong. The impact of his finishing move looked like it had damaged the Farfetch'd's precious leek. He knew how important their signature vegetable was to any Farfetch'd, a pang forming deep inside at the hopeless defeat that the Wild Duck had faced in a flash. Struggling to get itself up, the Ducklett from before offer to give him a wing out of the way, only to be met by a swat from the Farfetch'd's wing as he scooped up the pieces of his broken weapon and left the fray dejected and without any attention paid by the crowd.

Before Zak could feel too sorry for the bird, Hiru chirped up once again. He wanted to take his new companion to meet the other competitors and the man could hardly refuse: if he was planning on entering himself, it might be a good idea to scope out his fellow waterfowl trainers and his potential match-ups. Upon entering one of the tents, Hiru was quick to introduce Zak to a variety of the Pokémon and their trainers gathered within to prepare for upcoming bouts. Much like Drake, these birds also held unforgettable nicknames; a Psyduck named Quackie Chan was stretching and warming up whilst a Farfetch'd by the name of Duck Ellington was holding his leek like he was playing some sort of musical instrument. Each of the Pokémon and trainer within the tent looked like they were ready to give it their all but there was one Pokémon that Zak spotted that looked less than prepared. In the corner of the tent, the bulky Farfetch'd they had watched previously was trying to fix his signature weapon to no avail.

"Hiru, I'll be right back, I'm just going to try chatting to this one." Zak motioned subtly towards the Farfetch'd as he wanted to approach the bird carefully - he didn't fancy getting a slap like those Ducklett did. Before he did, he decided to release one of his Pokémon to assist, someone who would know exactly what to do: his own Farfetch'd. As she materialised from the sphere, she took a look around the tent she found herself in and was quick to ready her leek, sensing the competitive nature of the location she now suddenly found herself.

"Farfetch'd, stay by me and follow my lead, there's somebody that I think could use our help." The man whispered down to his own duck as the two wandered across to where the Galarian Farfetch'd was attempting to mend his much larger leek. As they approached, the man's Farfetch'd looked at the other in awe: she had never met a Farfetch'd so buff and his leek looked like it would put hers to shame... if it wasn't snapped in two.

"Sorry to disturb you, I just watched your warm-up and I'd like to offer you a hand. I know how important that leek is to you so if there's anything we can do to help you, Farfetch'd and I are more than happy to help."

Though Zak had offered to assist, he didn't know how he would actually be able to do this. Perhaps there was a greengrocers nearby where they could find a replacement? No, that was silly - these leek were clearly nothing like those that humans eat and they would never find one so large. Maybe these special leek grew somewhere but he knew nothing about the flora of Minnao, let alone where to find certain vegetables. Hoping that his own Farfetch'd would be able to bridge the knowledge gap, the man awaited the defeated Farfetch'd's response with bated breath.

Lyra waited for Xander and his Pokemon to board the dinghy, but as soon as they were on, she put some pressure on the throttle and the boat jolted forward with hardly any time for them to get their balance. They weren’t going terribly fast, but enough for the dinghy to skip off of each wave it cascaded over. Lyra’s driving was borderline reckless, but at least it seemed like she knew what she was doing, so Xander probably wasn’t in any immediate danger.

After a short while, the pair had gone a far enough distance that New Cabrys was just a speck on the horizon. Lyra eased off the throttle and the boat gently coasted to a stop. She picked up a small anchor and dropped it overboard, the metal chain clinking against the side of the boat as it unraveled to its full length. “Whew, had to make sure we got out of there without anyone seeing us,” Lyra exhaled as she pulled out a pair of sunglasses from her pocket and removed her parka, showing a somewhat revealing bikini underneath. She stretched her arms above her head, her bracelets jingling as she did so. “You couldn’t have come at a better time, I snuck out of my duties, and I could really use a tan. Lyra folded up her parka and laid back on it like a pillow as she stretched out on the length of the boat.

“Oh, right,” she added as she put on her sunglasses, “We’re here at the Mane. I can’t drive the boat any closer or else the propeller will get caught. Feel free to look around, but not too long. I probably gotta get back in like an hour or else I’ll probably get in some actual trouble.” This probably wasn’t the kind of guidance that Xander was looking for, but it was unclear if he would get much else out of this troublemaking young woman.

Pearl’s Perap:
The sheer quantity of competitors was a lot to take in, but Zak spotted the burly Farfetch’d from before and felt compelled to go offer it some words of encouragement. It seemed to be struggling all on its own, so maybe some guidance could help push it in the right direction. With Hiru still in tow, Zak called upon his own Farfetch’d in hopes of bridging the gap with the combatant.

The Farfetch’d was a bit surprised to see two humans accompanied with one of its own kind approach it, and it immediately heightened its guard. As a wild Pokemon, it was naturally wary of interacting with humans. Even though Zak offered to lend it a hand, the wild duck immediately turned away from the group dismissively. However, it glanced back at Zak’s Farfetch’d, curious to see how it would act under the human’s care.

Farfetch’d seemed adamant to fix its leek on its own, feeling responsible for its demise, but it did seem to take a few visual notes of the condition of Zak’s Farfetch’d’s leek. “You know,” Hiru spoke up, trying to break the ice, “I know of a spot where some wild onions grow… maybe we can go look for a new one?” The Farfetch’d sneered, but it didn’t look like it completely dismissed the idea. It finally spoke, clutching the two halves of its leek underneath one wing, “Fetch…” It looked up at Zak to see what the trainer would do next. “I think it might have agreed to come along,” Hiru whispered.

Xander had a feeling he was being used and he wasn't wrong. It seemed Lyra was indeed trying to avoid people when they left the island, she was shirking her duties! "What sort of duties are we talking about exactly? Mucking out stables? Gutting fish? Babysitting?" Xander was shocked that all Lyra wanted to do with her small amount of freedom was lay back and work on her tan. Sure, she was beautiful, but he really didn't think that she was the type of girl who was obsessed with her appearance. She'd been so intrigued by Xander's experiences, yet her she was with the opportunity to be part of one and she wanted to stay on the boat?! He wasn't having any of it.

"Scared of kelp then? What, did you get some wrapped around you when you were a kid and think it was a Dragalge attacking you?!" Xander snickered, hoping Lyra would take offense. "If you're too much of a Blaziken and don't want to come then fine, no sweat off of my back." Xander motioned for Empoleon to dive into the water. Pichu leapt over the side of the boat, landing on Empoleon's back, Xander following soon after. "I'm going to go see if I can find some Pokemon to play with, you're welcome to come if you want or you can just stay here and damage your skin." He didn't think it would take long for a reaction from Lyra, he just hoped it wasn't a slap to the face, or a punch!

Having decided to assist the Galarian Farfetch’d they had watched face a swift defeat just minutes before, Zak approached the proud creature with Hiru and his own Farfetch’d in the hopes of being even a little help during its current plight. The bird did not warm to the presence of the man and the boy, though, lifting its guard once more like it had with the Ducklett from before. Despite this apprehension, it eyed its fellow Wild Duck Pokémon carefully and seemed much less ruffled by her presence alongside the humans.

“Farf!” Zak’s Farfetch’d honked a greeting with a show of her own, much smaller leek. Though she was keen to assist in the fixing of the Galarian Farfetch’d’s damaged weapon, it was quite clear that this was something it wanted to do for itself and it simply examined her leek before returning its attention to its own predicament. As it did, the child accompanying Zak chirped up once again with his local insights: wild onions grew not too far away from here and he could lead them there. Though it appeared to scoff to itself, it was obvious that the Galarian Farfetch’d was awaiting the man’s response as it honked and looked up to the trainer with the broken leek tucked safe under one wing.

“Great thinking, Hiru, lead the way. What do you say Farfetch’d? I reckon we can delay signing up and help you get yourself re-armed if you’re keen?” The smaller of the Farfetch’d flapped excitedly at her trainer’s proposition, keen for any escapade that might involve leeks, particularly with a fellow aficionado.

Annoyed that Lyra wasn’t fulfilling her duty as a guide around the Mane, Xander resorted to taunting the girl as she laid back in the boat to soak up some sun. She immediately sat back up and lifted her sunglasses, giving a look that she was clearly not happy by the change in mood. “Excuse me? You don’t know the first thing about me. I’ve been swimming in these waters my whole life, so forgive me if I want to take a break and relax a little while. I’ll have you know that I’m the next in line to…” Lyra suddenly cut herself off mid-rant and sneered at Xander before composing herself and lowering her sunglasses back over her eyes.

“You know what? Nevermind. Go swim around however you like. I’ll be here on this boat, and I’m leaving in an hour whether you’re here or not.” Seeing as Xander had sufficiently pissed her off enough, it was unlikely that he would be able to ask her for any more favors. Nevertheless, Empoleon slipped out of the boat and into the water, causing the dinghy to rock back and forth as the weight shifted greatly. Pichu hopped onto the floating Empoleon’s back, and Xander followed suit shortly after.

With Lyra now giving him the silent treatment, there were hardly any other options for Xander but to swim alone with his Pokemon for now. The water felt nice and cool, but not too cold as it was warmed by the bright sunlight which left the water sparkling and clear a deep blue hue. Numerous dark spots marked giant leafy stalks of kelp all throughout the area. It was an outstanding view from the surface of the water, but in order to take in the full glory of the views the Mane had to offer, it was best to do so after diving underwater. “Hey, tourist!” Lyra called out, getting Xander’s attention. “You might need this!” Without moving from her reclined state, Lyra pulled out a goggle and snorkel and somehow without looking was able to lob it exactly where Xander was floating.

Pearl’s Perap:
As Zak’s Farfetch’d quacked her own greeting towards her fellow duck, the wild Farfetch’d slowly nodded its own “Fetch,” in response. It might still have been wary against its visitors, but it at least wasn’t short on manners. With Zak on board to help find the Farfetch’d a new leek, Hiru smiled and motioned for them to head out through the tent’s rear entrance. With its broken leek tucked under its wing, Farfetch’d quietly got to its feet and waddled outside.

Zak, Farfetch’d, and Hiru were right behind the wild duck as they exited the tent back out into the sunny Minnaoan afternoon. “It shouldn’t be too far away,” Hiru called out, but it didn’t seem like the wild Farfetch’d really needed any directions. It made sense that a wild Pokemon of this species so attuned with the use of the vegetable would know exactly where to find them in nature. While the briskly-flowing river that began up in the hills of Cordina’s Peak and emptied into the vast Orta Lake was never too far away, the group walked in the opposite direction from the water into the open meadow. Scattered trees offered refuges of shade while the grass grew tall and tough to navigate.

After a short while of walking, the group came upon a small muddy clearing where thick green stalks erupted from the ground. “Here we are,” Hiru announced. The wild Farfetch’d seemed to be absorbed in its own thoughts as it ignored the rest and began to waddle off to an empty patch of dirt. It set its broken leek on the ground and began to kick away a small hole with its feet. It really seemed to be thinking hard about something, possibly reflecting on its time spent with its broken leek, before placing it in the hole and covering the dirt back on top of it. With its burial of sorts completed, it finally lifted its head and began looking around at all of the foliage around it. Seems like it was time to begin the search for the perfect new leek.

With the decision to replace the wild Farfetch’d’s leek made, Hiru wasted no time in motioning the man and the Wild Duck pair towards the back of the tent where the group exited into the Minnaoan sunshine once more. Though the bulkier of the birds didn’t seem as used to interacting with humans, it appeared more at ease with the presence of Zak’s Farfetch’d as it took the lead and didn’t seem to mind as she dashed to keep up.

As the four pressed on in the direction Hiru and the wild Farfetch’d were leading, Zak started to daydream about the tournament they had just left behind. He had originally considered signing up with Lily the Swanna as his partner but was now contemplating his Farfetch’d as he watched her waddling ahead of the group and trying to keep up with her wild counterpart. She was young and hadn’t really got much in the way of battle experience but she made up for that with her boundless enthusiasm. If he entered her, though, he would need to give her a nickname to set her apart from the rest of the waterfowl.

It wasn’t long before the Galarian Farfetch’d had led the group across the plains and away from the river to a muddy clearing in the grasslands where numerous prominent stalks grew up from the ground. Though Hiru spoke up to let the party know that they had arrived, it was clear that the bulky duck knew exactly where he was. Up ahead and looking like it was concentrating on nothing but its broken leek, the wild Pokémon started to scratch out a makeshift grave in preparation for some sort of vegetable burial ceremony. As he did, Zak’s Farfetch’d gave it some space but lingered nearby, tilting her head and honking softly as if to check in on her new friend.

“Farfetch’d, I want you to offer our new friend a wing if they need it. If not, should we look for a fresh leek for you?” Though Zak’s Farfetch’d’s leek was very much intact, he knew that the Wild Duck Pokémon tended to benefit from having a second leek to hold on to and utilise in battle. If he was going to enter her into Duckfest, the man wanted to give her every edge on her fellow competitors if possible. Hearing this, the bird nodded keenly, happy with either option.

“If you need a hand, Farfetch’d, we’re here and happy to help.” Zak addressed the distracted wild Pokémon after having spoke to his own; though he had asked his Farfetch’d to assist it, he was keen to let the bird know that he was there to support it in its quest too.

Perhaps goading Lyra wasn't the best approach. The island girl snapped at him, although in her rage she let a fragment of herself out that she hadn't intended to. Xander wasn't the smartest tool in the shed, but he was clever enough to connect the dots. Avoiding people on the way off the island, the fisherman listening to her, carelessly taking a boat, skipping out on important duties, it all clicked together when she said 'the next in line to'. Lyra must've been some form of island royalty. Likely from a prominent family, she was probably used to living under restrictions. That would explain why she'd gone out of her way for this fleeting moment of freedom.

"Eh, your loss, not mine", Xander tucked the snorkelling gear into his waterproof backpack and instead withdrew a Pokeball. He released Dewpider from its ball, the water spider was happy to called upon. "You know the drill Dewpider, Pichu and myself are going to need some air bubbles." Dewpider was quick to task, first blowing a small Bubble for Pichu, he'd blow a larger one for Xander. The bug would stay attached to Xander's wrist while they dived. Once it had its bubble ready, Pichu layed down on Empoleon's left fin, gripping on tightly. Xander prepared to lay down flat as well, minimising drag. Once they were ready, Empoleon would Dive down so they could finally get a good look at the famous kelp forest. They'd likely have to surface every few minutes for a new bubble, but hopefully it wouldn't impede their exploration too much. "Down we go!" Xander cheered, "keep your eyes peeled for anything interesting, or anything dangerous!"

With the wild Farfetch’d’s broken leek now given a proper burial, it was time to look for a new one. Zak’s Farfetch’d approached its wild counterpart in order to offer a helping wing in finding a replacement, to which the wild duck solemnly nodded. It didn’t seem like much of a talker from the looks of things, but it was very possible that its guard was still up, making it very cautious around the strangers. Nevertheless, the wild Farfetch’d didn’t seem to be rejecting the group’s offer to assist it, so at least that much was a plus.

Zak began to scan the area with their new task in mind. The patch of dirt was a decent size, but most of the wild onion sprouts were clustered together, where their roots could grow in the richest soil. There was quite a selection to choose from; some big and some small, some were so tiny that their little bugs had only just barely begun to poke through the soil. Some sprouts were covered in dust and dirt from the elements around them, while others were so ripe that you could still see the morning dew trickling down their stalks.

Spoiler: show

With so many options to choose from, it seemed like Zak’s Farfetch’d was facing some serious decision paralysis right now, while the wild Farfetch’d was stuck deep in its own thoughts as it overanalyzed each and every bud that stuck out of the earth. Maybe Zak could take a closer look himself and point out which one for them to pull up.

Resolved to his fate of diving alone for now, Xander called forth his Dewpider to provide Pichu and him with some air bubbles to breathe while underwater. The aquatic spider happily obliged, doing what it does best and held on tightly to its trainer’s wrist. With all of the preparations complete, the trainer and his Pokemon clung to Empoleon’s back, and the metallic penguin slowly submerged under the surface of the water.

It was a truly breathtaking sight as Xander’s vision adjusted to the underwater scenery. A canopy of golden-green fronds swayed with the current back and forth. It really felt as if Empoleon and its passengers were flying above the trees in a forest that went as far as the eye could see. Empoleon continued its dive, lowering further down into the canopy and below. The group weaved in and out of the massive stalks, standing tall like tree trunks. The forest was rich with life, as a myriad of Pokemon species used the cover of kelp for shelter.

Various Goldeen swam past the divers, though kept a safe distance as they made their way through the forest. A few Qwilfish popped up here and there, but they seemed to pay the visitors no mind. As they got closer to the seabed, Xander was finally able to notice a few creatures that were completely camouflaged before; a small school of Skrelp clung closely to the kelp stalks. A couple of Krabby scuttled across the rocky floor while a Binacle flowed back and forth in the current.

Everything seemed tranquil as they maintained their course, but the echo of a rock cracking against another alerted the group to some kind of scuffle that was taking place. The crept closer to the direction of the sound, though not rushing in blindly to get a better look first. As they rounded a rocky corner, Xander and his Pokemon spotted a cluster of Pincurchin eating away at some of the kelp. It was a natural part of their diet, but too many urchins had been known to decimate these forests in the past. Something darted through the water rapidly, scooping up rocks and hurling them down on the Pincurchins, a bit unsuccessful at piercing their tough exteriors. The supposed defender of the kelp was none other than a lone Oshawott, but it didn’t seem to have a trademark shell on its belly, leaving its attacks without much impact. After several more attempted strikes on the Pincurchin, the Oshawott seemed to finally have caught the sea urchins’ attention, as they began to charge up an electrical defense.

Xander wasn't sure what his expectations were, but the sight of the kelp forest blew them out of the water regardless. There was a tranquil beauty about the underwater forest. It was like nothing he'd really experienced before. It reminded him of flying over the forests of the Cloud Garden, except under the water everything felt weightless. There was something new to see around every turn, from different fish Pokemon to Pokemon like Skrelp and Krabby hiding around the kelp. It certainly looked like a healthy and happy ecosytem, no wonder it was so prized.

An odd sound echoed through the water. It didn't sound like some predator preparing to attack, so Xander decided to continue. Cautious they made their way towards the sounds source, not wanting to let their presence be known until they got a proper gauge of the situation. As they came around the rock shelf, they watched the scene play out in front of them. First they noticed the Pincurchins. They'd been known to decimate kelp forests like this if their numbers got out of control, however that didn't seem to be an issue here. They seemed to be getting restless, as a lone Oshawott bombarded them almost helplessly with rocks. The rocks were ineffective, Xander found it odd that the otter was using that instead of its trademark scallop shell. Once he got a clear look, he realised why it had opted for this odd tactic, it didn't have a shell! The Pincurchin's were beginning to charge up, if Oshawott wasn't careful, it would soon cop a powerful hit!

Xander paused. Was it his place to butt in here? This seemed like a healthy ecosystem, his actions, although well intended could unbalance it. That said, Oshawott lacking its scallop shell was an oddity, perhaps something had happened to it? He needed to diffuse the situation as passively as possible, not his strongest suit, but something he believed he could manage in this case. "Dewpider, Pichu get in there. Pichu your Lightning Rod should draw in and diffuse the Pincurchin's attacks, Dewpider do your best to pull Oshawott away, tell it we'll help it find a scallop shell if it calms down." Pichu and Dewpider were far from experienced, but if things took a turn for the worse, Empoleon was on hand to get them out of trouble.

Having buried its former leek in what Zak could only assume was the proper fashion, the Galarian Farfetch'd the group had accompanied set about examining the vegetables sprouting up from the ground with his Kantonian counterpart. Though he wasn't quite as much of a connoisseur, the man approached the two Wild Duck Pokémon carefully to assist with them with their hunt without disturbing the pair as they appeared to be getting along.

The more the man hunted, the less he was convinced he was going to be much help: the patch they had found themselves exploring had leeks of all shapes and sizes. Even his Farfetch'd seemed overwhelmed by the sheer amount of vegetables to choose from, dashing from one to another and shaking her head as if she was rating them individually. Her Galarian companion appeared much more measured in its approach, carefully analysing each of the stems and their buds with some sort of unspoken criteria in its mind.

"Since you're not quite as buff as our new friend, you can ignore some of the bigger stalks, Farfetch'd - why not try pulling up one of the medium-sized ones instead and trying that for size?"

Though he didn't want to interfere with the wild Farfetch'd's decision making, he wanted to show the bird that he was still keen to help get him armed once more. With his own Farfetch'd setting about deciding on one of the smaller leeks, Zak strolled between the leek stalks and pointed towards one of the bigger, gnarlier vegetables, "What about this one? Looks impressive to me but you're the expert, of course!"

Unsure whether it was his place or not to intervene in the conflict and risk upsetting the natural balance of the ecosystem, Xander was able to discern that Oshawott was both outnumbered as well as disadvantaged by the lack of its trademark shell, so he called for Pichu and Dewpider to assist the struggling sea otter. Pincurchin could pack a serious punch, and the combined efforts of all three of them could result in a very bad day for Oshawott if it wasn’t careful.

The three electrical urchins were all about to surge simultaneously, so Pichu and Dewpider swam towards the fray as quickly as they can. Unfortunately, Dewpider’s thin spider limbs as well as Pichu’s stubby mouse legs were not designed for rapid mobility underwater, but Pincurchin were not known for their speed either. One Pincurchin released an electrical shock that pulsed through the water, but the conductive currents channeled directly into Pichu’s outstretched tail like a Lightning Rod.

Meanwhile, Dewpider gradually swam over to Oshawott’s side, who was confused by the sudden arrival of these unnatural visitors. It looked from Dewpider to Pichu inquisitively and listened as the diving bell spider attempted to express their desire to assist it. Seeing as there were three Pincurchin and now three of them, Oshawott wasn’t in any position to decline a level battlefield. It quickly nodded and uttered “Shwott!” before looking for another rock to pick up. It seemed content on its strategy, despite how ineffective it was. The three Pincurchin all turned their attention towards Pichu, their nearest foe, and bristled their quills as they prepared to attack.

Pearl’s Perap:
The pair of ducks were at a loss of which leeks to go after, so Zak leaned in and offered some advice on which ones they should target. His own Farfetch’d definitely seemed much more eager to take its trainer’s advice than her wild counterpart, so Farfetch’d took the lead and waddled up to one of the medium sized leek sprouts that Zak had previously pointed at. Despite being birds in the truest sense of their anatomy, Farfetched had developed a surprising range of dexterity when it came to gripping things with the tips of their wing feathers, almost as if they were like fingers, so it was no surprise when Zak’s Farfetch’d wrapped the tips of her wings around the aforementioned leek. Once she had firmly gasped the plant and started to pull on it, but was met with considerable resistance. It wasn’t until Farfetch’d used her beak for extra leverage that she was able to yank the leek out of the ground, and it immediately became apparent why she had struggled; the onion’s roots were extensive and gangly and the plant was not fully developed. It certainly wasn’t suitable for a Farfetch’d to weild naturally.

Next up was the wild Farfetch’d, who sized up the tallest leek sprout of the entire bunch. It rubbed its wings together to build up some friction and get its blood flowing. It became increasingly clear that these wings were developed less for flight and more for sheer strength, as it wrapped its wings around the width of the sprout and put its back and legs into trying to uproot it. Farfetch’d grunted a few times as it undertook the Herculean task of uprooting a plant several times its size. Farfetch’d let out a grunt-like honk as there was a snapping sound, and the momentum caused it to call back on its rear as the leek flew out of its wings and landed on the dirt. Like its previous weapon, this leek had snapped in half, but the damage to this plant seemed to have been done long before their arrival. The insides were hollowed out as if they had been chewed through by bugs, and sure enough something skittered out of the hold in the ground shortly after. It was a rather upset looking Venipede, who bristled its poisonous barbs and hissed at the ducks.

While Pichu's Lightning Rod had successfully drawn in the Pincurchins' first electrical assault, it seemed Oshawott was still determined to force the kelp munching critters away. Although the numbers were even, Xander still didn't like there chances. Two inexperienced Pokemon and a scallopless Oshawott against a hardy trio of Pincurchin? It wouldn't be an easy contest. Despite that, Xander decided it wasn't necessary for Empoleon to step in, not yet at least. They didn't necessarily have to completely demolish the Pincurchin, they just had to make it so that their kelp feast wasn't worth the battering they'd have to endure to enjoy it.

"Wish Pichu, then get in there and Play Rough! Dewpider, they're all pretty close together, so lets get them with an Infestation. Follow that up with a Scald while Pichu closes the gap." While Dewpider wasn't overly experienced at battling, the Water Spider could certainly pack a punch. With its Water Bubble ability and Mystic Water, its water moves could punch holes in just about anything. Even still, he wasn't sure about their chances here, mainly because one of there trio was essentially fighting with one hand behind its back. Oshawott wasn't fighting to its full potential, they needed to fix their weak link. He didn't have anything on hand that could substitute for the missing scallop shell, but perhaps they could find something to at least get them through the battle? "Empoleon, have a look around, let's see if we can find something nearby to help Oshawott out.

Going to start using Farfetch'd's new nickname as of this update but I couldn't think of a way of introducing it so it's just... there - I'm sure this won't be as confusing as Farfetch'd and Farfetch'd, though haha

As the pair of avians set about pulling up their respective vegetables, Zak watched on with bated breath, hoping his choices wouldn't be the wrong ones. His Farfetch'd was first to take the recommendation and quickly set about trying to unearth herself an off-hand leek. Unlike most birds, the dexterity of her feathers was second to none and she deftly gripped at the stalk before pulling hard. This was no use though and she resorted to grabbing at the leek with her large beak instead, successfully managing to uproot her target once she did so. It was all for nothing, though: the leek her trainer had chosen for her was underdeveloped and its sinuous roots had been what had caused her issues in its uprooting.

"Don't worry yourself, Asha - let's make sure to tidy up after ourselves, though." Zak didn't want his partner to feel disheartened by the situation but he also couldn't bare the thought of showing up and leaving discarded stalks about the place. Before he could stride forwards to bury the leek alongside his Farfetch'd, the Galarian Farfetch'd set about trying out its designated leek for size and the man turned his attention to watch. Unlike his own Farfetch'd built for dexterity, the Galarian birds were known for their brute strength and their bodies had a muscular edge compared to their Kantonian kin. The wild Farfetch'd wrapped his wings around the oversized leek and began to push off against the ground with both feet, grunting to itself as it did so. Eventually, the vegetable gave way with a honk of exertion and a familiar crack - this one had snapped quite similarly to the Wild Duck's original weapon.

That wasn't all, though, as something appeared to have been chewing on the vegetable from the inside whilst it was still underground and attempting to grow. As Zak and his Farfetch'd peered closer to get a better look at the neat mandible bites left in the leek's heart, something scuttled from the hole. In pulling up its lunch, the trio had annoyed a Venipede and it stood poised before the pair of Farfetch'd with poisonous barbs at the ready.

"Alright, Asha - since our new friend might not be battle-ready, I want you to disarm that beastie with a Sand Attack. Once you've done that, I want you to give it a warning Peck. If it doesn't take a hint, we'll take it up a notch."

Zak turned to the Galarian Farfetch'd after ordering his own Farfetch'd's attack orders, "You're free to help out if you can but I'd rather we get you armed first so you can really squash that bug. If Asha holds it off, why not try pulling up that one there?"

Finally. After searching high and low for the place where he lost so so many companions, he finally found it. The Ocean of Mystery, the place where he first adventured with his starter, the place where he caught his now-cursed Finneon, and the place where he was looking since the strange incident happened that devolved the two pokemon he managed to keep besides his Golett who was not evolved already, however it did lose a lot of levels. His long journey would come to a close, or at the very least, this chapter will be.

His heart raced as he looked upon the beaches. The boat that he had ridden on to the ocean's edge would not travel any further, because of the rumors of sunken crafts, not to mention all the dangerous terrain nearby. Bill stands out on the edge of the boat, smelling the salt nearby, no matter how often he comes across this place it always felt different with each trip. The trainer sends out his starter, Silver the Squirtle, and his Finneon, Swift. The Squirtle stands on the deck, looking outward. Swift, on the other hand, is swimming in the waters very happily. This was the happiest Bill has seen Swift in a long time, especially after what happened with the eldritch gods a couple years back.

Bill clasps his hands together and says "Alright guys, listen up. This is important." Both Pokemon give his full attention. "Normally, I'd be up for exploring the vast oceans for treasures and new Pokemon, but we're here to find out what happened to us last time. Especially since last time you two were a Blastoise and a Lumineon. Whatever is out there, it's dangerous. I will be happy if we find the others, but at this point, I just want to know what the heck happened to us."

The Squirtle looks down into the ocean, focused and quiet. Silver was definitely ready for the adventure. Swift, on the other hand, was splashing around quite a bit. Bill looks outward and says, "Swift, do you think you can lead us around? We should start by looking for the land that I found you at." Bill jumps into the water with his Pokemon, both using Surf to swim faster.
