Officially didn't even lose power! My area was actually worse last year with Irene. We actually lost power for 10 seconds during that one.

My favorite pictures:
Goldman Sachs with power during Sandy while NYU Hospital has no power (their backup generator failed). A wild Seal appears! |

Any info on the 50+ house 6 alarm fire supposedly burning in Breezy Point? I saw this video and... yeah...

I survived Hurricane Sandy and all I got was SUDDENLY FALL.
Like it was 80 every day here and then the Hurricane happened and it's high of 55 every day. I feel cheated. |

Why can't every winter be as awesome(ly non-existent) as last year's?

Talon reminds me of the girls at work who constantly complain about how cold it is even though the current inside temperature is approaching 80F.
This reminds me of something I did a few years ago while visiting Chaos' parents in Ohio during the middle of winter. They needed me to scrape the snow off of their car so we could go out to eat breakfast at some place. I walked outside in a T-shirt, some pajama pants, and a pair of slippers, and proceeded to scrape all of the snow off of the car with my bare hands. At no point during this time did I feel even slightly cold, even though it was only around 25F and still snowing. This leads me to believe: Talon has a drastically lower metabolic rate and doesn't generate enough waste heat from chemical reactions. Is possibly significantly less muscular than normal and generates less heat from muscle contraction. Possibly has some kind of thyroid or other glandular/hormonal problem. Because seriously, how can a grown man possibly be so cold? |

But I'm plenty warm. I'm not one of those cold-handed people you meet. I just really, really hate the cold. But I have average body temp, I assure you. No one's ever told me I have cold hands unless it's been me coming from outside during the winter.

It's gotten warmer here after the storm.
Ee Seal~ I saw footage on the news of a Deerling that got caught in the waves. Fortunately it was rescued and being treated for a broken leg.

Major disappointment here.
We got like 30 mph winds and then it all stopped at 3 in the morning last night. Really lame. Wish we had gotten something at least worth preparing for...

Really? You're going to complain that your family and home is 100% okay as opposed to the people who had their houses flooded, burned down, or just fell apart? Over thirty people died and you guys are complaining about being perfectly fine.
This generation worries me. |

I think it's the same sort of psychology you see in military personnel who are in the armed forces during a major war but who aren't deployed anywhere near combat or who are but who serve in non-combatant roles. So like the guy who was stationed in Hawaii from 1942 through the end of WW2. Or like the guy who was at the DMZ in Korea but served as a cook back at base camp rather than an infantryman on the front lines. People in that position sometimes grapple with feelings of worthlessness, of disconnectedness from the great heroic acts on the front lines. You get people who join the military in peace time and they say, "Man, I wish we had a war." Like servicemen in the 1990s who spent their entire time deployed in Germany or Japan doing jackshit nothing. Yet of course they recognize that they ought to be grateful that they never had to go into harm's way. That it's stupid to be saying, "Man, I am so upset that I never had to risk my life. I wish I would've been placed in a near-death situation!"
I think this is similar to what you hear when it comes to natural disasters. People are upset that they didn't feel the earthquake or that the local earthquake was so tiny. "Man, I wish we would get a 7.0 on the Richter scale! " People are upset that they've never known what it's like to be on the interstate during a blizzard. (Let me tell you from first-hand experience, it's goddamn perilous!) People are upset that the historic hurricane missed their state. Instead of having a story to tell their kids for the rest of their lives they just got some heavier than normal rain, some meh winds, and that's it. Stuff they'll have forgotten about by this time next year until some anniversary report on Hurricane Sandy reminds them, "Oh yeah, that was a thing." You're absolutely right that they should be grateful that they didn't get hit. But I wouldn't get too upset at them. It is a common, common thing to see people wishing that they were part of something big, even when that big thing is disastrous.

That's how much wind we regularly have here in Eastern Illinois.

We had 60mph winds. Obviously people who live by the lake got the worst of it. Police tried to evacuate but nobody listened as usual.

Because when I think "hurricane" I definitely think "church fire." Man, natural disasters sure are queer sometimes.

It was only part of the fire, the background of all of the burned down houses with the statue of Mary in front just seems incredibly eerie.

Oh, it's not the building which got destroyed that I find queer, it's the fact that a natural disaster associated with tons and tons of water was ironically the cause of an 80-building inferno.
