Pokémon Red, Blue & Yellow Discussion Thread
I am really interested in who else bought a copy today and I thought it would be nice to discuss their progress, teams and memories and whatever~
After being torn between Blue (my first game) and Yellow (which I loved so much) I opted for Yellow and it just brings back far too many memories xd; I love talking to Pikachu~ D: I'm dreading it already but I used to hate Silph Co. when I was a kid. Forever one of the toughest dungeons in Pokémon xd; So, anyone else want to share? EDIT: I realise there is the thread in the News section but that didn't really seem appropriate to discuss in detail the games and whatever idk. |

Yeah, I got Red version because lolMankey. Never actually played proper gen 1, so this is fun. Got to Pewter City so far, and then started grinding on the Kakuna in Viridian Forest.
The team so far: Harmony the Metapod, level 7 Lea the Kakuna, level 8 Storm the Pikachu, level 6 (I am disgusted in myself) Ivan the demon-Pidgey, level 8 Derek the Rattata, level 10 Steve the Charmander, level 10 Boxed Gary the Nidoran-M, level 8 a spare nido-m to trade for the nido-f at some point. So, for all those of you who never played this before: What's the hardest bit to adjust to? Personally, it's the sprites and the weirdly low encounter rate.

To be fair I've played them and it is weird to re-adjust to the really poor stat/type coverage of some types (Poison, Bug especially), the EXP bar not being shown, no genders or hold items.
Also the laughably small movepools. I just googled Nindoran F's and it learns about 5 moves. |

I bought Red this morning. Just about at the end of Mt Moon and I've got Kesha the Jigglypuff (gonna turn into a Wiggly once I get another Moon Stone), Mikey the Wartortle and Thresh the Nidoking.
So far, the big things I've found hard to get used to again are the lack of physical/special split, not actually being able to see how strong moves are and the complete lack of movesets (There's a reason I'm not waiting to evolve Kesha or Thresh)

Also stop copying me, our teams are identical except I also have Clefairy. And Nidoqueen instead of King. Yeah, the surprisingly small movepools have been the big thing for me, especially because by and large the moves have suuuuuuuuuuuuucked. The level up movepools are garbage. Also fuck Mt. Moon's encounter rate; holy shit. I got my Jigglypuff up 12 levels. Also fuck Jigglypuff's encounter rate. 10%? I got my Nidorina and Wartortle from 16-19 while looking for one. Remind me how I do the Mew glitch? |

I bought Yellow yesterday. Currently have Pikachu, Nidoking and Bulbasaur, and I'm gonna train up Bulbasaur a bit before taking on my Rival and grabbing Charmander and glitching myself a Mew.
My Final team plan is Venusaur/Charizard/Blastoise/Snorlax/Zapdos/Mew Last edited by Snorby; 02-28-2016 at 10:19 AM. |

I'm super excited to get Yellow! It was always my favorite since you could get all of the different starters, which was pretty neat. I'm also pumped to try the Mew glitch which I never did before!

Try this, but you may be passed this already.
I got Blue, and will definitely be trying the Mew Glitch. Started with Bulbasaur for nostalgic reasons. First one and all. I think I'm gonna go for Venusaur/Gyrados/Ninetales/Dodrio/Nidoking/Mew (perhaps Venomoth instead of Mew) |

To get Mew specifically;
1: Make sure you haven't battled the guy to the left of Nugget Bridge, or the Youngster with a Slowpoke (alternatively, the Swimmer in Cerulean Gym works for this, but only if you haven't beaten Misty yet). 2: If you're doing this as early as possible, catch an Abra. Otherwise, have something with Fly and the badge necessary to use it. 3: Stand directly north of the first Trainer I mentioned, the guy to the left of the Nugget Bridge, positioned just far away enough that taking one step south would make him notice you. Make sure the Abra/Fly user is in your party and ready to go. If you're using Teleport, make sure your last healing spot was the Cerulean City Pokémon Center (optional, but it maximizes convenience). SAVE YOUR GAME. Optionally, if you want to get a level 100 Mew extremely quickly at the cost of access to Transform, also make sure you have room in your party. 4: Move one step down, and press Start (or X, that actually works too) before your character is done moving. This is why saving is recommended- even if you're experienced with doing this, it's still possible to screw it up. If done properly, you'll be in the Trainer's line of sight, and the menu will be open. 5: Teleport or Fly back to Cerulean City. Start and A no longer work- this is normal. 6: Go to Route 25/Cerulean Gym and fight the Youngster with a Slowpoke/Swimmer. If you're fighting the Youngster, MAKE HIM WALK UP TO YOU. If you go right in front of him so he notices you but doesn't need to move, the game will freeze. You don't necessarily need to win the fight, but in the case of the Swimmer, you at least have to make it to Shellder. Optionally, if you want the quick level 100 Mew, hit Slowpoke/Shellder with six Growls (the Swimmer is easier for this if you started with Charmander, since Shellder will just spam Withdraw, giving you ample time to spam Growl) before the battle ends. 7: After the battle, do not fight any other Trainers or any wild Pokémon- just head back to Route 24. Once you get there, the menu will open. Close it and Mew will appear. Level 7 normally, but it'll be level 1 if you hit Slowpoke/Shellder with six Growls. After that, go ahead and catch it. 8: This step only applies if you opted to get the level 1 Mew. First, don't let it go to the PC while at level 1, because the game will freeze when you try to withdraw it. Same goes for any Pokémon that works for this particular trick, hence my advice to have room in your party. You may want to save the game before doing this, just as a precaution. Now, go out to Route 4 and fight a wild Pokémon. Switch your Pokémon around before defeating it so each participant gets a very small amount of exp. points. If you did it right, your level 1 Mew will earn less experience than it needs to get to level 2, which will make it instantly grow to level 100. Unfortunately, it will not try to learn any of its level-up moves, so it's still only got Pound, but considering this is Mew we're talking about here, it's not like it doesn't have options. |

My rival: "So how's your Pokédex coming? I already caught 40 kinds, pal!"
I made sure to have more than 40 Pokémon registered as caught by this point specifically to one-up the guy. |

EDIT: Wait I forgot that line was in the S.S. Anne, I thought it was the Cerulean fight. More believable now. |

Yeah, no, I highly doubt it's possible by that point, even with glitches. Granted, I made use of the Mew glitch a lot, but the only things I caught that counted towards the Pokédex that you can't normally get that early are Mew and Cubone, so that only accounts for three of the entries (I evolved the Cubone). And I didn't even evolve my Charmander, Oddish, or Ekans yet, despite all of them being well past the required level, so yeah. Definitely possible to outdo him at that point.
I now have three badges to my name, by the way. Missingno. swept Surge completely, and didn't even take damage- Voltorb's Sonic Boom missed, and Surge stupidly went for the X Speed on both Pikachu and Raichu. En route to Rock Tunnel- and screw Flash, I know that place like the back of my hand. Vermilion Gym protip- half the time, the second switch is in the top left trash can, no matter how nowhere friggin' near it is to where the first switch was. No wonder this puzzle used to drive everyone insane! |

Alright. Got the Rainbow Badge. Charmander swept Erika with relatively few problems (still can't wait to replace Ember with Flamethrower, though!), and more to the point, finally got all six Pokémon for my team! Speaking of which, my team is as follows:
Seadra lv. 23 ~Bubble Beam ~Smokescreen ~Ice Beam ~Swift Missingno. lv. 33 ~Body Slam ~Fly ~Dig ~Thunder Wave Vileplume lv. 33 ~Petal Dance ~Acid ~Cut ~Sleep Powder Ekans lv. 33 ~Body Slam ~Dig ~Wrap ~Glare Koffing lv. 33 ~Sludge ~Thunderbolt ~Tackle ~Bide Charmander lv. 34 ~Ember ~Slash ~Dig ~Leer |

I like to think that you would've been Blastoise Stu if you'd joined up back then.

*Missingno. gets confused by Zubat's Confuse Ray*
*hurts self in confusion* *goes from full health to only 8 HP left* I'm actually more surprised it didn't outright OHKO itself, to be perfectly honest. Going through Rocket Hideout now. Koffing's tried to evolve, but I stopped it. Not going for a specific move here, I just figured it seemed fitting to let Koffing and Ekans evolve at the same time. |
