From the ground up, one rises to the challenge

Apologies for the delay here, moving and decorating has that effect. Maskerade and GS, you'll have updates tomorrow.

The Ribcage Mall.

Lil'twick
: Your slipping sanity only serves to make the Shell sneer more as you call for an encore performance, to which the man responds with a simple crossing of the arms. "Your overconfidence will be your downfall, fool," he grunts as Yuke gives himself a shake to try and remove some of the infestation harassing him. The Palossand in turn, having lost a limb, doesn't seem too fazed and turns full attention towards the Spheal before giving a moan as tendrils of botanic energy lash into the seal's blubber. Yuke can only give a wail of his own as his vitality is drained at a considerable rate from the megalomaniacal silicon monstrosity, who appears a little more refreshed.

Not out of the woods despite the surprisingly heavy hit, Yuke nevertheless douses the sandcastle with another water gun, the spray striking the other arm as the sand compacts once again, yet the Shell isn't too bothered by this despite the creature's complaints. Mustering up strength, Yuke repeats his strategy and powdered snow and frost pelt the structurally sound segment of sand, but the ghost pokemon seems to not pay much attention to him. As you watch, you feel your concentration lull as a hypnotic wave pulsates through you, the maw of the castle open wide and inviting you towards it, towards Aimee, towards peaceful oblivion as your body subconsciously shuffles towards it...until a chilly blast knocks you out of your induced stupor.

Yuke, having none of this nonsense, continued his glacial assault with a second powder snow, catching you with the brunt of it, and upsetting the Palossand, who at this point has got tired of the Spheal's stunts, as has the Shell. Wheeling round, the hardened limb of the ground type flexes unnaturally before taking a harsh swing at the water type in frustration, the hardened freezing sand serving to reinforce the impact and striking Yuke hard as he is launched into one of the warehouse crates, the box shattering from the cannonball launched involuntarily. A tense couple of seconds pass as the dust slowly settles, and yet as the sand swirls around you, you can see Yuke slowly roll out of the wreckage, battered and bruised, weakened against a foe that possesses the upper hand in strength and endurance.

"You see now, boy? Let me demonstrate how you've consigned yourself to a grisly fate..." the Shell mocks before lifting his arm and snapping fingers. Beneath you, the sand swirls and converges upon the Palossand as the dry sand builds up around the stump of its broken arm as the beast begins to shore up its body, rebuilding the limb and undoing almost all the work Yuke and Shredder have output, to your disbelief. "You fucked up, kid. So long as there's sand on the ground, we can do this all day and night, and sooner or later your little seal will run out of vigour. Then what happens? The castle devours your essence, strips flesh from bone, and you become one with him. You're outclassed, best to just give up and accept your fate. On that note..."

With a shudder, the sandcastle turns to the Shell before undulating, before throwing something out from within. Aimee, barely conscious, is dumped at the Shell's feet, who promptly hauls the terrified child up. "Watch, child, as your would-be saviour is consumed by the sands...as you will be too!" As Aimee's weary, tearful eyes lock onto yours, Yuke gives a bark, determined to keep fighting despite the disadvantage in strength, as one thought comes to the forefront: this Palossand seems to be the Shell's only pokemon, and you're in a life-or-death situation, against a stronger opponent. Perhaps it best be time to even or tip the odds in your favour?

: Shadow versus Starter. Murderer versus Justiciar. Poison versus Poison. You were no stranger to all of these things, and the sight of the Black Scarab only reinforces your determination as Gemini and Mustard float between you and Scolipede. Knowing what the species are capable of with your own, your confidence is through the roof as you relay your commands to your oldest companion. Without much warning, the Shadow pokemon shrieks a terrifying war cry and charges forward, horns lowered, ready to puncture the gasbags before it. The Weezing is ready however, and braces themselves for impact with a dark aura surrounding them. Taking a few steps to the side, you and Meowth watch as the beast barrels full force into Gemini and Mustard, the megahorn colliding with them, empowered by the aura to deliver a scathing blow as the pair are knocked for a loop. Not to be outdone however, and naturally more resilient to physical blows due to their aerial position, the Weezing responds in due.

With Mustard whirling round, the dark energy flows through Gemini as the twin heads spin round and leaving the larger head to pay back the pain in full, knocking into the side of the Scarab's head and knocking it to the floor as it snarls in pain, and as horns clatter against the brickwork you spot a smear of red, blood that had yet to dry. The bug type quickly finds its feet however and stares daggers at the poison bag, but while Gemini recovers from the impact, eyes spinning a little from being dazed, Mustard has his back. Taking in the noxious air, the smaller head spews forth a searing flamethrower at the Scolipede as it gets its bearings, the monster crying out from the effective assault. Gemini quickly recovers and adds his own infernal energy to the assault before a shadow ripples through the ground and a number of needles spike out, pinning the Weezing's shadow in place and holding him firmly in the battle, preventing escape.

Not to be outdone, the bug stomps feet into the ground before digging horns down and flicking upwards, loosening some of the cobble then whirling round and slamming its tail around, sending a barrage of rocks sliding over the Weezing. Taking evasive action, Gemini and Mustard are forced to abandon their third attack of the round to drift backwards, flinching as their body is railed upon by bits of brick and cobblestone, but avoiding around two thirds of the assault. The Black Scarab's body then appears to shimmer, bug energy swarming around it, yet after only two attacks you're certain that it has much more fight left within. Gemini and Mustard may have taken a painful first strike, but they boast the upper hand in terms of vitality, and as the shadowy aura flares around it once more, a quick check of your dex confirms that your adversary appears to have slightly lowered its offensive presence in favour of a more balanced boost to strength and defence. Nevertheless, the battle has only truly begun...

Your graceful surrender seems to please the children, the budding criminal masterminds happy to have 'defeated' you. They were in charge, now! The little girl smiled up at you, smugly.

"I'm Pepper," she informs. "This is James, and this is Stephen."

She motions to her companions in turn, using the muzzle of her plastic gun. The blonde seems to be James, and the brunette seems to be Stephen. James elbows her, lightly, and then leans in to whisper something in her ear. She frowns, and narrows her eyes at you.

"Don't move," she orders, thrusting the toy firearm in your face. She pulls the boys away, and they form a huddle a few feet from where you stand. Now and then, one of them casts a scrutinizing glance at you. Their judgement is palpable. Finally, they break apart and approach you, Pepper leading them with all the severity of a diplomat proposing a deal.

"You said you're looking for work?" She clarifies, tapping the barrel of her toy gun against her palm rhythmically. "I got a job for you. There's this kid, a couple blocks over. He's been taking our stuff, so we're gonna go take care of him. He's four grades higher than us, but you're way bigger than him. Help us get our stuff back, and we'll pay you."

Dealing with this bully sounds like a relatively worthy cause, and would probably ingrate you to them, but they're kids -- how much could they really play you? Pepper looks at you expectantly, waiting for an answer.

What will you do?

“Pay me?” Bel deliberately took her time as she pondered about the offer. It wasn’t like there was much to really think about; her mind was already made as she heard Pepper’s request. She just wanted to mess with the kids and make them go the slightest bit impatient. The children would learn soon enough the he who keeps the pacing of a conversation is always the one who’s truly in control. That said, she couldn’t keep her eyes from lighting up the slightest bit the moment she heard word of the bully, and the prospect of delivering sweet payback and just punishment on behalf of these children sounded like a fun endeavor. After all, she had a history, long and bloody, with bullies herself growing up, and it wasn’t like it would be a pointless activity anyways: Bel was indeed expecting payment for the effort, and she already had something in mind to ask of them.

“Alright then, sounds good to me. How do you want me to humble this problem kid? With a super wedgie? A good ol’ nipple twister? A camel clutch? Permanent relief of his pokemon? All of the above? You name it... But! Let’s discuss this payment first. You said you knew everyone on the block, yes? Well, it just so happens there are a few people I want to meet. So I help you out, and you point me in the right way after that.” She squatted down to their height, spat on her hand, and extended her arm. “My muscle for your info. Deal?”

Nevertheless, the battle has only truly begun...
And the battle began! Making the first strike was often an important part of battles, but sometimes you had to know when you not only didn't have a chance in the Distortion World of making the first strike, but also had a far better shot on capitalizing on said fact instead of trying to land that first blow. And Keith knew this. With a Koffing as his starter, and a grandmother better known around Lavaridge Town as the crazy Wobbuffet lady, how could he not?

The Megahorn made contact- a powerful blow, to be certain, but resisted nonetheless, and rendered even less effective by the Weezing's naturally solid Defense. And then came the potent Payback- one of the best ways of capitalizing on a blatant inability to make the first move, a Dark-type move that packed twice the power against an opponent that had just made a move. Keith grinned as the Shadow Scolipede was knocked to the floor by the impact. This didn't last long, however- the Black Scarab got right back up, glaring at Keith's Weezing.

Gemini was still a bit dazed from all the spinning Payback entailed, but Mustard was able to pick up the slack most admirably, the Weezing's second head starting off the Flamethrower, and a moment later, Gemini recovered and joined in on the attack. A super effective hit, and all the Black Scarab could do in response was go for a Shadow Hold. This was just fine by Keith- he had no intention of withdrawing his Weezing in any case. But then came another actual attack from the Bug/Poison-type- a Rock Slide this time. "Gemini! Mustard!" Keith exclaimed. The Weezing had managed to avoid a good chunk of the attack, but flinched nevertheless from what little bit of the move they had taken- they didn't get to use Psybeam.

"Now wat's goin' on?!" Meowth exclaimed, pointing a shaky paw at the Shadow Scolipede, who seemed to be shimmering with Bug energy.

"That's Swarm, it's gotta be," Keith replied. "We- it took that much damage already, though?" He shook his head. "We can't let our guard down," he stated. He consulted his Pokédex as he spoke, which confirmed that the Scolipede before them seemed to have foregone some offensive power in exchange for strength and defense. "Alright, then let's keep it going!" Keith declared. "You guys still good to go?"

"Weezing weez!" replied both Gemini and Mustard simultaneously. The Rock Slide wasn't exactly pleasant, and that Megahorn was painful, sure, but the Weezing was still good to go. It'd take much more than that to get them down.

And Keith knew it, too. "Be careful about that Swarm it's got going," he warned them. "Power up with Curse, then let it taste your Gyro Ball, and then let's try that Psybeam one more time!"

Aloha, from your hostest with the mostest. Looks like it's a light week this week. PikaGod & EpicSquirtle, your last updates are here; Rotom310, your last update is here.

Pepper recoils slightly from your hand, a disgusted look on her face, but evidently she decides she likes the cut of your jib, because after a beat she imitates you, spitting into her palm before shaking your hand. Stephen sticks his finger in his mouth, the gesture miming the act of gagging himself.

"You got a deal," Pepper affirms, wiping her soiled hand on her pants leg once she releases you. Shoving the toy gun in her pocket, she gestures with her hand for the boys to follow her, before beginning down the sidewalk, her posse and you, her new muscle, in tow.

"Okay, here's the deal," she says, as the four of you walk. "This kid, Topher, thinks he's soooo cool, because his dad gave him a Pokemon for his birthday this year. He took my bike, and James' PokeGear! He said if we try to get our stuff back, he's going to roast us with his stupid Charmander. But Stephen borrowed his big cousin's Pokemon, and it's a Water-type, so we're going to beat up his Pokemon and take our stuff back. Maybe some of his stuff too. I haven't decided."

You pause in your march under a stop sign on the corner, neat suburbs in all directions that seem downright incongruous with the gang territory you know this to be. She jabs the blond with her elbow, and he jumps slightly, standing straight -- evidently, she's got these boys at her beck and call.

"Show 'er the Pokemon," she urges. He fumbles, digging in his pockets before producing a scuffed up Poke Ball with someone else's name written on it in permanent marker. Holding it out awkward at arms length, he releases what's inside.

It's incredibly underwhelming, not that you can tell by the kids' faces. They look utterly stoked on the Magikarp as it flops on the sidewalk at your feet. Clearly they've put some thought into this -- they technically have the type-advantage against the neighborhood bully's fabled Charmander -- but with life experience these kids lack, you know their current plan doesn't stand a chance.

What will you do?

Bel couldn't help stifling a laughing fit as the Magikarp flopped about like a literal fish out of water. The whole thing with the toy guns was kinda cute by itself, but this made her wonder if this was some sort of elaborate joke. No matter what sort of type advantage it had, facing off against any other Pokemon in any sort of contest other than a bounce-off was sure to end in disaster... and it was the sort of show Bel was now itching to witness for shits and giggles. Besides, one can't earn real life experience without the occasional crash and burn. What was she supposed to do? Warn them of their folly? To hell with that. She owed them no such favor.

"That's, uh, a water-type, alright. Yeah, that'll do fine." She lied through her teeth, nodding and grinning in encouragement. "So, let's review the plan. We find this Topher, you beat his Charmander silly with your mighty Magikarp, and then I step in and take your stuff back, right? And should you, gods forbid, somehow lose, I'll back you up with my own pokemon. Easy. Sounds good?" And then I nab a Charmander for myself. Those fire-breathers are rare, and they're just the kind of monster I need on my squad. She thought to herself in the process, her greed almost becoming visible to all present. In her mind, Topher wasn't likely to be worthy of it anyways, and it's just the kind of life-experience that'll make him think twice about stealing.

You're more or less undeterred by the sinister threats associated with this place, and barge in head-long, despite the better hopes and dreams of your Munna. Fortunately, when you throw open the doors, you don't find a clandestine meeting, or other looters. You just find a very large, very empty room.

The first thing you notice when you walk into the atrium is that it's cold. It's almost as if you'd just opened the door to a walk-in freezer -- the temperature gradient is steep and severe. The many windows of the building let in some dim sunlight, but your eyes still need a moment to adjust. There's an abandoned reception desk towards the back of the room, and two elevators behind that. They're almost certainly out of order, but you can see what looks to be the door to a stairwell between them. Crossing the otherwise empty lobby, you notice the desk looks virtually untouched since the government closure; there are stacks of documents, office supplies, and even framed photographs of the former receptionist and her family. It's unlikely there would be anything really important kept at this level, but it might still be worth a look.

A sign by the stairwell indicates that there is both a basement floor, as well as several higher floors. Getting closer reveals that there is a cold draft coming through the cracks around the door. It's an unnatural cold; one which makes you uneasy. Maybe it isn't such a good idea to be wandering around in here? There is always the option to just leave, though that would be disobeying a directive.

What will you do?

Upon entering the sinister building, Roxie was more then a little relieved to find...no one. No looters...or even any terrifying spirits.

"See? Nothing to be scared about." Roxie said, giving Yume a faint smile.

It took all of the Munna's effort not to roll his eyes. Roxie had been terrified of approaching this place from the start. But as soon as he suggested they act carefully, he was the scared one?
Though he wanted to protest, Yume held his tongue. The Munna knew it was better to ignore Roxie's comments, then to try and win an argument with her.

"Of course, nothing to be worried about." Yume chimed. "Now..let's see what we kind find."

"Right." Roxie nodded, before stepping closer inside.

The first thing that the blue-haired girl noticed was the temperature of the room. It was much colder then Roxie had expected it to be, perhaps one of the windows was broken? No...that wouldn't make sense, Roxie realized as she glanced at several of the windows. Even if they were broken, the building wouldn't be this cold, would it? There had to be a logical explanation for this, Roxie knew. To think otherwise was stupid. She just had to hope said explanation didn't involve vengeful spirits waiting to kill her.

"Are you going to help or what?" Yume's voice rang in Roxie's head, pulling her attention away from her thoughts and back into the mission at hand.

"Y-yes of course!" Roxie exclaimed as she glanced around, looking for the Psychic type. It didn't take take long until she spotted him, floating around some kind of desk.

"I thought you said we were going to stick together." Roxie grumbled as she approached the Munna.

"Relax, it's not like I left the room or anything." Yume replied, his attention still on the desk in front of him.

Following the Munna's gaze, the Catalyst admin spotted all sorts of things, from documents to office supplies. The desk in question seemed to be almost entirely untouched since the time the building was abandoned, Roxie realized. Then, was it true that no one had been inside the building since then? Or...perhaps it was more likely that there was nothing of value on the desk.

"Come on, let's try and find something worth bringing back." Roxie said, her attention already on the elevators nearby.

"Right." Yume replied as he floating over to his trainer. Though the documents on the desk could be important, it didn't seem entirely likely to him.

As the pair approached the elevators, Roxie stopped suddenly. Right between the elevators Roxie noticed a door, one she assumed to lead to a stairwell of some kind.

"We're...going to be taking the stairs. The elevators likely aren't going to be working." The blue-haired girl said rather matter-of-factly.

Yume had a suspicion that even if the elevators were working, that Roxie would still insist they'd take the stairs, but he said nothing. It didn't really matter to him anyway, considering he was capable of floating.

With that decided, Roxie continued towards the door, but froze before even reaching it.

"Is something wrong?" Yume asked, giving his trainer a confused look.

"I-it's really cold..by the door I mean." Roxie stammered, taking a few small steps from the door.

"Yes? It's cold here in general, if you hadn't noticed." Yume replied, quickly brushing his trainer off. It seemed a nearby sign was doing a better job at holding his attention.

"Yes but....it feels almost...unnatural." Roxie explained, her eyes fixated on the door in front of her. As if something was to pop out from behind it at any minute.

"Hmm...unnatural huh? Then that's all the more reason to check it out." Yume chimed. "This sign says there's a basement level. I'd say we should check it out first."

"Or...maybe we should just take those documents we found and leave?" Roxie suggested.

"No. No that wouldn't be acceptable." Yume said with a shake. "Zack's counting on us...you wouldn't want to let him down, would you?"

"What? No of course not!" Roxie exclaimed. "I.....I just.....fine. Fine, we'll continue."

"That's the spirit." Yume chimed. "So the basement it is?"

"Wherever we need to go." Roxie nodded as she approached the door.

Though she was still a little nervous, Roxie knew that she couldn't back down. Slowly she reached out to the door, before giving it a light push.

As awesome as tailing the backup sounds, you think it might be better to be a friendly, neighborhood vigilante before moving up to serious criminal activity. That's fine -- everyone has to start somewhere. You inform the desk clerk that you are Quentin and you are, in fact, here to help. She stares at you a moment, recoiled slightly from your enthusiasm. Finally, she sets the receiver in her hand down, and leans forward.

"If you'd like to join the Marshals, you'll have to apply to the training program," she says, matter-of-factly. She reaches towards a filing tray of papers to fetch you an application, but before she can pick a packet up, a horrible noise rips through the building. There's a sound of shattering glass, and a moment later a woman runs out of a back room. She grabs a broom from beside a water cooler, and then turns around and disappears into the room again; you can hear the sound of wood on various surfaces as she audibly swipes the broom at something. There's an inhuman screech, and then a small, brown rodent with bizarrely ringed eyes darts through the doorway, skittering underfoot before disappearing behind a large filling cabinet. The woman with the broom brusts out of the room, red in the face.

"That's twice today!" She yells, clearly at her wits end.

The receptionist sighs through her nose. She glances at you. "You're a Pokémon trainer, right?" She asks. "If you want to help, catch that Patrat. I don't know how it got into the building, but it's been causing trouble all week. "

What will you do?
“Am I a trainer?” questioned Quentin, very questioningly. “I am more than a trainer. I am a hero to those are in need. Helping those who need help in their times of need need.”

He struck a pose, gently slamming his hand down onto the desk. “I can do more than catch that Patrat. I will bring it to justice, I will find out how it works. I will find out how its brain ticks, how it lives, how it functions. I will live and breathe being Patrat! I will catch that Patrat for you!”

Striking another very necessary pose, Quentin stood in front of the desk, like a very heroic statue, for about half a minute before he started talking to the woman again.

“Now as an obviously esteemed person, who works at this very fine law and order establishment,” he started, “I suppose you might be able to give me some pertinent information in regards to the where the Patrat tends to be seen the most, as well as any points of travel that allow it to easily escape capture.”

Quentin figured that any and all information would be useful to capture the Patrat, after all, heroes worked best when they had the clearest path to victory.

Two weeks counts as tomorrow in a land without time.

Marshal's Headquarters.

Maskerade
: Time being of the essence, you place both trainee pokemon on double duty while Shiou's bond with you relays what is necessary of the Gengar as he rubs his ethereal hands together, static charge building up as fists electrify, before striking the plate with a thunder punch of considerable force, a metallic ring in the air as the plate receives the charge. Slice and Tremor listen to the necessary commands, and as the Combusken takes aim to the upper section of the rubble pile, the Drilbur waddles back, both pokemon making eye contact.

With a cry, the avian drives his foot into the top of the pile, kicking some of the bigger rocks down towards the mole, who smashes them into gravel with large claws before the chicken's redoubled efforts blow off more of the stone. One rock in particular underneath seems larger than the others, and as the fire type readies another barrage, Tremor barks with concern. As the pair begin to argue, the mole runs into the boulder and grabs it with his claws with crushing force, slowly lifting it above his head as cracks begin to form. Taking the cue, the avian puts his own strength into the rock and the pair utilise teamwork to lift it up and off the now exposed dummy...what is clearly a substitute doll.

With one more cry, Tremor claps his claws together as Slice hefts the rock up, before it shatters into chunks over the pair, the Combusken alarmed but otherwise unharmed. With the dummy more exposed, the remaining rubble is cleaned up without much trouble by the chicken's talons as Shiou gives a psychic confirmation towards the meter. Looking round, you can see him somewhat drained of electrical power having launched another thunder punch, but the generator powered up fully.

"Well done, the generator has been powered up, and the victim has been relieved of the rubble with around thirty seconds to spare. Speaking of which..." the marshal quips, blowing a whistle on hand. The substitute doll pops in a puff of smoke, and as the generator shakes around, a panel on the front falls off as a cuboid creature wriggles out of the opening with small belching sounds. Bemused, Shoiu rejoins you as the Charjabug inches to the marshal, having appreciated the electrical meal, as two and two come together.

"While your efficiency at the start was a little disjointed, and your Gengar lacked the initial surge, once things got going you performed admirably. Granted, there was no danger at all, and Charjabug are used to sitting in confined spaces. We have use of them for emergency power situations - humanely, of course - but I digress. That these two have worked together with some competence is of merit." Slice and Tremor seem to be beaming, though the stance of both suggests that they are claiming the glory for the rescue as such...

"Anyways, the next outpost is over by the grove gate, a couple of miles to the south west. Take a break before you head out though, you'll need it."

Shiou gained 2 levels for his part in the training!

Missingno. Master
: Given the Black Scarab's change in behaviour as well as the Swarm ability activating, you err on the side of caution as Gemini and Mustard hear your orders to play defensively. Taking the cue, the pair begin to invoke a curse upon themselves, energy swirling around them as their body stiffens and becomes more resilient, yet slowing down, which was not a bad thing. The Scolipede on the other hand simply opts to lower its head as it readies another charge towards the Weezing, in a likely repeat Megahorn...until you see the shadowy aura flickering around the beast.

With a bellow, the Megapede barrels towards the gasbag, seeking to break through their defences, and as the twin pokemon braces the greater weight and shadow energy knocks them for six, both heads gasping at the super effective strike, powerful despite the bolstered physical resistance. The Scolipede keeps going past them however and rolls into a large wheel before whirling around and rushing your starter again, shadow energy replaced by insectoid force. Grunting, the Weezing floats upwards, only catching the upper half of the steamroller and is sent spinning, and as Mustard is left reeling Gemini takes the slack for his brother this time, coating the pair in a metallic sheen before giving a wheeze to the smaller head and a confident grin.

Taking the cue, the smaller head closes his eyes and begins to whirl around the larger before letting momentum take over as the Weezing gyrates round at high speeds and hurtles like a cannonball towards the Scolipede as it unfurls. It leers round just in time to get knocked flying as the noxious gas pokemon's speed deficit works to amplify the power of the move, and rather than throwing the much heavier pokemon to the stone, actually launches the Scarab through the air as it shrieks bloody murder, landing heavily on the brickwork as Meowth pumps a paw into the air at the heavy blow. With the bug incapacitated for an instant the pair are much more successful in shaking the dizziness off and launching a twin psybeam from their maws into their adversary.

The Black Scarab screeches at the super effective strike, flailing around as it finds its footing once more, and it snarls in anger. Scarlet eyes flare up, and they settle directly upon you, as a shadowy aura once more surrounds the bug pokemon, with untold intensity. Almost familiar intensity in fact, as the Black Scarab seems to have caught on to who wears the boots in this team and is intent on ending the chain of command that is you. Shrieking, the bug pokemon moves before Gemini and Mustard have the chance to do anything, as almost quarter a ton of death rushes you recklessly, horns lowered...

Crimson Sanctum.

Gemini Spark
: Your growlings towards the Litwick are met with general indifference from the candle, who merely looks back at you with those yellow eyes and shrugs, as though blaming you for getting too close to a pokemon that passively consumes life force. With information gleaned, you take task to look for the man's ball and the big names in the Shells, pushing aside Neemee for the moment with some regret. As you and Silas venture up the stairs and out of the catacombs, you find a couple of corridors, and take a left.

Wandering through the halls, your human guise soon returns now that you're no longer near the Litwick, and as the two of you stroll cautiously through the hallways, you are drawn to the architecture of the cathedral complex. Giant busts of legendary pokemon tower over you, mostly of the three legendary birds, though you are quick to notice the Zapdos effigies have been defaced. In one chamber, you find a pair of Shells, who give you a grunt and a nod as you respond in kind, your decision to grab the bullet clip paying dividends at negating any suspicion whatsoever. Heading up a flight of stairs to the upper floors, you take a moment with the Houndoom to consider your options, when someone approaches you.

"You. With me."

The order comes suddenly and without warning as you and Silas turn to the source of the voice, to find an older man wearing a waistcoat with the symbol of the Shells emblazoned upon it, with all the subtlety of the Rocket symbol. Clearly this figure is a cut above the others, and his blonde short hair and green eyes give the impression of someone who doesn't take no for an answer. The Krookodile beside him only reinforces this, the croc eyeing you and Silas warily. How will you react?

The battle raged on. Gemini and Mustard powered up and slowed down simultaneously with Curse- normally the Speed drop was considered a drawback, but in a Pokémon species that was never gonna get the first strike to begin with, and who was packing moves that actually relied on going after the opponent, Curse was basically all upside. And indeed, even after taking a super effective Shadow Break and getting grazed by a Steamroller attack soon after, the Weezing retaliated with a Gyro Ball, the results of which got Keith beaming with pride. "Yeah!" he cheered as the Steel-type move actually sent the large Scolipede flying.

"Now dat was awesome!" Meowth agreed, actually pumping a paw in the air.

"Damn right, it was," Keith grinned. "Now, Gemini, use Psybeam!"

"Weeeeeez!" bellowed both of the Weezing's heads, as each head let fly its own Psybeam at the Black Scarab. Another super effective hit, but this was a victory short-lived.

Keith's grin faded ever so slightly as the Shadow Pokémon before him locked its crimson glare directly upon him. It had figured it out. Attacking the Weezing wasn't the answer. No, if the Black Scarab wanted to get out of this, it had to go straight for the source.

"...Eep," Meowth squeaked.

Keith froze. He wasn't sure what to do. Could he even jump out of the way in time? His jumping skills didn't totally suck by any means, but were they that good? Was this the time to risk that? Or should he give Meowth a command? He didn't even have time to ready a Z-Move! What was he gonna-

At that moment, however, the remaining sphere on Keith's belt, the only one whose occupant hadn't exited at any point since arriving at Goldenridge, it gave a sudden, angry shake. The entire sphere was the same shade of red, and the design was slightly different in shape as well. The Cherish Ball split open, emptying its contents right in between Keith and the Black Scarab. "Garrrr," growled Ariana as she materialized, giving a downright frightening glare to the Shadow Pokémon threatening her Trainer's life. Wasting no time in response to the oncoming Shadow End, Ariana threw up a Protect.

Keith gave a relieved chuckle at this. "Perfect timing, Ariana," he said to his Garbodor, backing up as he spoke, so if Ariana was knocked back, he wouldn't be knocked back as well. "After this, hold it in place with Psychic, and Gemini, you use Zap Cannon!"

Happy Update Day! Rotom310, your last update is here.

Crimson Sanctum

There's no way you're gonna warn these kids of their folly -- it's too fucking funny. You're lost in thought, practically drooling over the idea of stealing a preteen's Pokemon, when you hear Pepper's voice.

"-ey! Hey! Are you listening?" She reprimands. She's scowling at you, bottom lip turned out. "Come on. He lives across the street."

It takes Stephen a moment to right the unfamiliar device in his hand, but he eventually manages to call the Magikarp back into its ball. You look both ways and then cross the street; four or five houses down, two middle school-aged boys are playing basketball in a driveway, and that's where you head. The taller one -- a curly-haired boy wearing a backwards-turned baseball cap -- notices your entourage as you approach, and stops playing. Ball tucked under one arm, he practically sneers at the four of you.

"What do you want, losers?" He grunted. He fixes his eyes on Pepper, who has taken the lead in your procession. "Did you go and cry to your babysitter, you little puke?"

"We want our stuff back, Topher" the little girl asserts. She held out her hand expectantly, and Stephen handed her the borrowed Poke Ball. "Hand it over, or else."

"Or else what?" Topher scoffs. Jaw setting, Pepper lobs the Poke Ball at him, and in a flash of light, the Magikarp materializes. The two old boys stare at it for a moment, and then burst out laughing.

"Are you serious?!" Topher's friend howls. Topher digs a Poke Ball out of his own pocket, tossing it into the air.

Well, the kids were right: he has a Charmander. Pepper doesn't look concerned, but you know better; the kids are well and truly fucked, and you're going to watch them crash and burn.

"Magikarp, use Water Gun!" Pepper orders, confidently, and then watches as Magikarp... does nothing. Staring into space, it flops on the concrete driveway. Pepper repeats herself, frustrated, but it's no use: Magikarp can't use Water Gun.

"Oh man, you suck,"Topher informs the little girl. "Charmander, use Ember," he says, almost dismissively -- these kids aren't worth his time. The Charmander obeys, regurgitating flecks of glowing, red-hot something. They sear the Magikarp as they make contact, and the fish flops violently, trying to dislodge them. Over the course of about fifteen seconds the children watch on in horror as their Pokemon writhes in pain; eventually, it grows still.

"What happened?" Pepper groans, sounding a little shocked.

"Your Pokemon fainted, idiot," Topher informs. "And now I'm going to take it, too!"

What will you do?

Bastion of Vacuous Dreams

[ Epic Squirtle ]

Figuring there were something useful in the basement -- records, servers, treasure, whatever -- you head for the stairwell, bracing yourself as you open the door. Inside it's dark... or, at least, the stairway heading upwards is. Alarmingly, there's a fain glow coming from the bottom of the downward stairs; dull and orange like candlelight. The light reflects off the stairs in dim, shimmer flecks, and upon closer inspection you realize the stairway heading down is completely iced over. You've made up your mind, though, so with a cautious step you descend. As you go, it grows colder and colder, well below freezing and dropping still -- your breath comes out of your mouth in large clouds of vapor, visible on the frigid air.

At the bottom of the stairwell is another door, separating it from the basement proper in the way it had been separated from the ground floor. The door has a glass window set into it, and through it you can see the faint silhouette of someone moving around on the other side. It looks like you're not alone here. You can see a couple of dimly lit tables covered in papers, and a few vague shapes in the shadows, but it's impossible to tell how big the room is or if there are more people. You could probably leave without being spotted, if you turned back now, but if you don't get something worthwhile you'll disappoint your superiors -- maybe even suffer repercussions. Do you really want to risk that?

What will you do?

Marshal's Headquarters

[ PikaGod ]

The woman at dispatch recoils from your enthusiasm, but you're in the zone. This will be a great act of heroism on your part! You're going to pick apart the mind of this miscreant; really learn how evil works. You just need t know its usual haunts, and any ways out of the building. The woman blinks slowly at you, and then looks at the filing cabinet behind which the Patrat escapes.

"It runs in and out of the air vents," she says, in a tone far less urgent than your own. "There's a vent behind that cabinet. They all lead down into the basement, so I guess it probably hides down there."

The man who spilled his coffee, having cleaned up and made a fresh cup, speaks up. "I can show you down there," he offers. The lady at dispatch nods.

The lady working dispatch nods. Reaching down, she opens a large drawer, which is full of various Poke Balls of different sorts, all of them arranged orderly. "These are supposed to be for the officers," she says, as she picks up one of the balls. "But since you'll be doing us a favor if you catch it..."

Reaching over the desk, she hands you a Level Ball. The guy with the coffee nudges you. "The basement is this way," he says, leading you down the hall. Near the end, he stops in front of a door, and opens it; a staircase leads downwards on the other side, into darkness. "Light switch is at the bottom," he informs. "Right by the stairs. Can't miss it. I'll wait up here, in case you need me."

Looks like the hunt is afoot. Taking one last look at your guide, you notice his nameplate says 'Cpt. Rogers.' Looks like this is your backup. The only way to go now is down, into the black unknown.

What will you do?

“Aww, what a shame. I was really hoping to be a bit surprised for a moment, but I guess Magikarp really are the weakest.” Bel shrugged as she feigned disappointment, rubbing salt on the wound. She looked down on the kids as she studied their facial expressions. Where there tears she noticed welling up on their eyes, maybe? That priceless look of defeat; that feeling of frustration: may it spur them to learn from their mistakes as she did in her youth. It wasn't like she was being mean just for the sake of it however. This was her way of making a lasting mark and making the younger ones have real-life experience, although admittedly, watching them try and fail so amazingly was quite entertaining in of itself. She only wished she had recorded the event somehow.

Bel then turns her glance over to the curly-haired kid, bearing a somewhat condescending grin. “What was your name again? Gopher or sumthin’? Like I really give a shit. Boy, you don’t wanna steal a fucking Magikarp. Try your hand on this.” She calmly grabbed her pokeball and released its content with confidence. With a flash of light, a crimson beast of fur and stone materialized, the berserker wolf howling menacingly as she came into being. She bared her fangs, and grinned wickedly - she knew what she had come here for. Blood, violence, pain; she wanted it all. Bel didn’t want to give the bully any time to think about accepting the challenge, and issued her order straight away. “Time to play, Sheena. Let it rip.”

Crystal Grove.

Missingno. Master
: (6 of 6 confirmed: Meowth, Scolipede, Seviper, Starmie, Weezing, Garbodor)

Faced with impending doom, you were frozen in fear as the legs of the Black Scarab rallied towards you, and yet in times of great danger, people and pokemon are capable of doing extraordinary acts of selflessness, and nothing could be further from the truth than now. Sensing a threat, Ariana the Garbodor swiftly bursts from her ball and throws her arms before her defiantly, vowing to protect her master and friend from harm, and not a moment too soon. A massive crash of shadow energy rips at the translucent barrier as she stands strong, bracing against the impact as the Trash Heap pokemon is pushed back as the shadow pokemon rams into the shield, thrashing head and horns around in an effort to break through, and after a few tense seconds that appear to last minutes...the shadow energy dissipates as the barrier shatters into nothingness.

The Scolipede stares at her for a brief moment as it attempts to comprehend what just transpired, before hissing and shrieking furiously as it begins to throw the mother of all tantrums, swinging and stomping around, tectonic energy rippling through the brickwork and shaking up the Garbodor, who hunkers down defensively, trying to stay stable in the face of the amplified super effective assault, and as the Black Scarab kicks around, she is forced back onto her back, tripping over herself.

Foaming at the mouth at this point, the Scarab is clearly in the throes of a full-blown fever state, forgoing all lucid thought for sheer damage output, and as the chamber trembles, Meowth becomes concerned at the growing intensity of the shaking ground and the dislodging of debris above you as dust drops onto your heads. Down, but not out, Ariana clambers back to her feet as her eyes begin to take on a cyan hue, and with a cry, the Garbodor psychically grabs the enraged shadow pokemon and hoists it off the ground, stopping the impromptu earthquake from bringing the catacombs down on you all. Taking the opportunity, Gemini and Mustard crackle as they generate an orb of lightning before them, taking careful aim at the suspended Scolipede as it throws around in the air, unleashing wave after wave of shadow energy in every direction, the waves hitting Ariana, hitting the twin pokemon, waving over you and Meowth as the two of you shake in pain...

...and then the zap cannon launches. Strained, Ariana's hold on the bug type weakens, dropping the bug onto the ground, and as it stares around incensed, it spots the cannonball hurtling towards it, and makes a break for it...only for the Garbodor to take a hold of its back legs with psychic force, causing it to stumble, and the chamber suddenly lights up as the cannonball finds its mark. You and Meowth can only shield your eyes as you are momentarily dazzled by the burst, and your ears are filled with a horrifying shriek emanating from the Black Scarab. When your sight returns to you, you find the Scolipede on the ground in convulsions of paralysis, as Gemini and Mustard give a wheeze of success. Chancing a look towards Ariana, you find the poison pokemon holding her head with her junk arm, a little dizzy, but giving you a sincere smile even as she aches from the onslaught of super effective moves.

And then a coughing sound catches your attention once more. Somehow, the Shadow pokemon hasn't given up the fight, driven by bloodlust and instinct, and has spat forth a bloody bomblet at you and Meowth, an almost sludgy consistency, only for a blur of green to intercept the attack, with a cry of "piiiiin!" Following the blur, it's Chespin, who shakes off the purple and red mess from its arms, mostly unscathed, as though the force of the ballistic projectile was deflected by its bulletproof wood body.

"Keith!" Amanda calls out as your group turns to your entrance, as the woman and Donovan have caught up to you, the man in question supported by a familiar owl, and with some sort of harness over his arm. "Donovan was looking through some boxes for something to stop the..."

Her words are interrupted as she looks upon the injured yet angry Scolipede, shadow energy dancing around it even as it stands shakily. "I need it weakened enough to lose its will to fight...then we can stop the threat posed once and for all. Keep at it, Keith," the man calls as he tinkers with the harness and some sort of ball, as the command is clear, and the Black Scarab continues to gather shadow energy around it, doubtlessly preparing another devastating barrage of attacks, but you can tell it's on the ropes.

That went about as well as you were expecting; that is, terrible for the kids, but hilarious for you. Pepper looks frustrated, more angry than sad; Stephen, however, does look on the verge of tears. Whether it's out of concern for the Pokemon that just got thrashed, or out of fear of repercussions from his cousin isn't clear. Topher thinks it's hillarious, too, until you speak up.

"Who the heck are you, lady?" He demands. Both the little kids and the older boys recoil slightly from the red beast that is your Lycanroc; Pepper's eyes get real big in awe. Now that's a bad ass Pokemon!

Sheena's feet barely hit the ground before she opens her mouth, howling frightfully. Then she lunges. The Charmander tries to turn tail and flee from the much bigger creature, but Sheena is faster and bites down on his tail. He screams in pain, the sound an inhuman, reptilian screech, and begins scratching desperately at her face to try and dislodge her. Angry --but not very badly hurt -- she slings him several feet, into a flowerbed by the porch, where the decorate rocks lining it collapse onto him like a crude tomb[/b]. Topher yells, and runs to check on his Pokemon. It's hard to tell if the Charmander is down for the count yet, but it's definitely not in fighting shape after that blow. Sheena is practically unscathed. Pepper is screaming your name excitedly -- it looks like you have a new little fan. James has put some space between himself and the battle, not wanting to get caught in the crossfire of such a frightening Pokemon as yours, while Stephen is cradling his borrowed Magikarp. You're pretty sure you hear him mutter, "Bruce is gonna kill me..."

What will you do?

When it came to the subject of particularly loyal species of Pokémon, the notion generally brings to mind images of various canine Pokémon. Arcanine. Herdier. Lycanroc, albeit mainly the Midday Form. Even Mightyena. And not without reason, in all fairness. But Keith knew that that was but the tip of the Bergmite. Pokédex entries regarding the likes of Weezing and Garbodor tended to talk about their foul odors, their poisonous capabilities, and their diets that gave a whole new meaning to the term "junk food". Rarely, if ever, did they touch upon just how fiercely loyal they could be to their Trainers.

And yet, it was this loyalty that Keith was experiencing firsthand. His Weezing's heads were in unanimous agreement that they would risk their lives for their Trainer, and Ariana had needed no prompting whatsoever to send herself out and shield Keith from the Shadow End that would have, well, ended him otherwise.

Of course, the Black Scarab wasn't making Keith's hasty change of plan easy to execute. Following the failed Shadow End, the Shadow Scolipede went into a frenzied Stomping Tantrum, powered up by its previous failure. Unfortunately for all concerned, not only was this super effective against Ariana (Gemini and Mustard's Levitate at least kept them safe), but it also threatened to cause a cave-in. The Bug/Poison-type actually tripped over itself, even, and by this point, was beyond reason even moreso than a Shadow Pokémon generally was.

"Gah! I tink it's in Hyper Mode!" Meowth whimpered.

"Oh, that ain't good," Keith murmured.

All the more reason, however, for Ariana to act fast, and act fast she did! Not one to let a single Stomping Tantrum get her down, the Garbodor used Psychic to hold the Black Scarab in place, and also lift it up, stopping it from using Earthquake. And then, the Weezing fired the Zap Cannon! As Keith had hoped, the Electric move's notoriously iffy accuracy was mitigated by Ariana holding the target in place with Psychic. It did break free from the Psychic hold and attempt to dodge the Zap Cannon, but Ariana had reapplied the Psychic, taking hold of the Scolipede's back legs. The momentary stumbling was just enough to allow the Zap Cannon to hit its target! Once the brilliant flash died down, Keith could see the Black Scarab struggling against the paralysis. He grinned at Ariana, who smiled back, dizzy as she was from the tiring battle.

But just as Keith turned back to his opponent, already he saw a Sludge Bomb flying his way! However, just like last time, something else came zooming in to intercept the move. "What the-" began Keith, and then he saw what that green blur had really been. "Chespin!" Keith grinned. "Now that's timing! Wow, you took that well," he added, realizing that Chespin seemed largely unaffected by what ought to have been a super effective blow. At that moment, Keith's Pokédex piped up to explain.

"Chespin's Hidden Ability- Bulletproof," droned the device. "Chespin is immune to ball and bomb moves, such as Egg Bomb, Ice Ball, and Sludge Bomb."

"Oh, that is cool," grinned Keith. He then turned, for someone was calling his name. Amanda and Donovan had showed up, the latter supported by Hawkeye, and fiddling with some kind of harness attached to his arm. Having heard stories about criminal goings-on in the Orre region from his great-aunt Fateen and his friend Gavin, Keith had a shrewd idea as to what that could be, but now was not the time to verify that suspicion. Indeed, as Donovan pointed out, Keith needed to finish up the battle, weaken the Shadow Scolipede to the point where it lost the will to battle.

Keith glanced over to his Weezing. "What do you two think?" he said, holding up his left hand. Both Gemini and Mustard noticed something immediately- Keith had swapped out the Z-Crystal in his Z-Ring. The Poisonium Z was now stashed safely back in his bag, and in its place sat an ice-blue crystal. "Think this'll do it?"

The Weezing exchanged looks, exchanged nods. They had more experience with Acid Downpour than with this, but this would be a more favorable matchup in terms of typing. And, considering how absurdly strong this Scolipede seemed to be, they probably couldn't make this a lethal hit if they tried, but if they could weaken it to the point Donovan wanted it at, then it was definitely worth a shot. "Weezing," they stated simultaneously.

"Then let's do this!" Keith declared, starting to move his arms. He recalled when such a move literally shattered a Sigilyph earlier on, but that was coming from a super powerful, giant, murderous Claydol, just as that relatively unfortunate Acid Downpour even earlier was from a Seviper who didn't give a shit whether he killed those Rattata or made them faint. But there was no murderous intent here. All involved intended to see to it that Donovan could make the catch he was gearing up for.

These poses weren't quite as familiar to Keith as the ones for his Poisonium Z, but as Z-Power flowed forth from his Z-Ring, from his Icium Z, and into his Weezing, he knew he was doing it right. "Our hearts, our minds, linked as one!" he was saying as he moved. "A chill as intense as the Snowfall Steppe of Cloud Garden! Raise the power, lower the temperature!"

"Weeeeeziiiiiiiing!!" bellowed Gemini and Mustard, feeling the Z-Power flow through them, feeling their Blizzard move changing, powering up, becoming something far stronger.

"Let's go! Use Subzero Slammer!!!" Keith commanded.

Code:

Gemini surrounded itself with its Z-Power!

Gemini unleashes its full-force Z-Move!

Angry --but not very badly hurt -- she slings him several feet, into a flowerbed by the porch, where the decorate rocks lining it collapse onto him like a crude tomb.

The battle seemed to be over almost as soon as it started, but Bel had the wisdom to exert caution. It is when pushed against their limits that Charmander fight their hardest, their flames blazing bright and hot for one final push, and while she wasn’t particularly concerned about Sheena’s ability to handle it, she kept in mind that both the kids and herself could be potential targets. With this in mind, Bel took fearless strides towards Topher and his buried salamander, with Sheena following at her side. Her expression became stern as she tried her hand at intimidation, a tool often used to get results with the least amount of resistance.

“I’m taking back the things you took from these children, and then I’m taking everything of value that you own. We can do this the easy way or the hard way. The hard way means you and your friend get a chunk of ass bitten off at the very least. Easy means you both come out unharmed. Recall your Charmander and hand it over. Be quick, my Lycanrock can hardly contain herself before lashing out.”

As if on cue, Sheena stares down at Topher with a vicious Leer, reinforcing the fact that this was no joke. It was Bel's intent to have him fear for his life in earnest. To feel vulnerable and at a complete lack of control. Such was the feeling of powerlessness, and for Bel, humiliating a power-hungry bully to such degree was nothing short of poetic justice.

"So, what's it gonna be, easy or hard?"

You've come to this sad place with a grain of desire to do something good; to make this world a better place. A creature follows you, and another creature follows it -- or so you're pretty sure -- and together the three-ish of you make for a bizarre, disjointed procession through the ghettos. You find, as you walk, that the people on the streets who are going about their lives the best can under the circumstances forced upon them, take pause when you pass by. Housewives picking through bruised produce at a shanty that passes for a market turn and watch you. Children playing stick-ball stop and clear the street, staring at you from the opposite sidewalk. It's unnerving in its ubiquity; every local you come across behaves the same. Is it you? Have you somehow done something wrong?

Your question is answered when a glass bottle goes sailing past your head, shattering on the ground less than a foot from the clawed feet of the Weavile who has become your tenuous companion. A look in the direction of origin reveals the assailant: a slightly overweight man with a receded hairline and a heavy mustache. He's standing on the porch of one of the shacks which pass as a home in this area.

"You get off this block!" He yells, at you and at the Weavile. Behind him, a middle-aged woman with long, mahogany hair comes out through their open front door, and grasps him by the arm, a frightened look on her face.

"Nikolai," she pleads, casting a worried glance at the Pokémon at your side. "Come inside, before you anger it-"

"No, Danielle!" He bellows, shaking her off. Beginning to go red in the face, he points a meaty finger at the Weavile, hand shaking with rage. "I won't let that monster terrorize us anymore! Have you forgotten what it did to the Quincy kid? To little Danny Hansen? To Melanie?"

The woman blanches, and then her face contorts, tears filling her blue eyes. She covers her mouth with her palm and swallows a sob, before speaking up.

"We don't know that it took Melanie!" She yells. The man shakes his head, and picks up a rusted shovel that had been leaning against the porch railing.

"I won't let that damn thing take another child, do you hear me?" He asserts, as he begins to descend the porch stairs. Around you, others have come out onto their lawn and stoops to watch the commotion. Some clutch their kids to themselves, others whisper and murmur in hushed tones. No one, not even the woman named Danielle, makes a move to stop his advance on you. Somehow, you've managed to walk into quite a bit of trouble, although you don't seem to be the source. Rather, the Sharp Claw Pokémon with you appears to be the source of the distrust and, now, violence. But what could he have done to these people? The man with the shovel is crossing his yard with purposeful steps, and you need to think fast.

What will you do?

The quiet was the first sign that something wasn’t quite right.

Drew was no stranger to an urban environment, for all his various misadventures had sometimes lured him elsewhere. From his years growing up in Jubilife City and more recently living in the outskirts of Striaton in Unova, he’d always found some measure of comfort in the noises that never seem to cease of even the smallest towns. Of vehicles puttering about, Pokémon scurrying through the streets, and people never stopping for a moment. Of lives being lived to whatever extent circumstances allow. Even a place as run-down as Shanty Heights had that soft symphony of sound playing in the background. So, hearing it take a decrescendo, seeing the residents pause in their actions as he passes… it was more than a little disconcerting.

Drew thought it was him, at first. He was very obviously not a local, even if this community hadn’t been the kind to know all their neighbors by name as Drew suspected it was. He’d only just entered the suburb, and he highly doubted he’d made some sort of social error just by walking. So, were they just unwelcoming to strangers? Or had Drew done something without even knowing?

Because fate is ever so kind to him, that was the moment something narrowly kept from braining him.

Drew jolted back, watching stunned as what he could now identify as a glass bottle shattered against the ground before Stealth. Much as Drew had, the Weavile flinched back a step, growl low in his throat as he fell into a ready stance.

"You get off this block!" the middle-aged assailant yelled, shaking off the attempts of his wife to stop and go inside. "No, Danielle! I won't let that monster terrorize us anymore! Have you forgotten what it did to the Quincy kid? To little Danny Hansen? To Melanie?"

Drew’s stomach lurched. He could freely admit he could be a bit oblivious at times, but those were some very obvious lines to read between.

The wife yelled back they didn’t know it took this Melanie, and all of Drew’s suspicions were confirmed.

Shit. Fuck. Shit.

It wasn’t him that was the problem – it was Stealth.

Drew only had finished that thought when the man – Nikolai – grabbed a shovel, and Drew’s mind kicked into high gear.

Now, these were the some of the moments Drew lived for: when adrenaline flooded his system, and everything narrowed down to single moments of time. When his brain had no choice but to stop thinking about anything but right now or else face the consequences of indecision. Perhaps it was not the healthiest mindset to have, but hey, that was just a prime example of things not thought about.

His focus narrowing on the here and now, Drew decided priority one was de-escalation. He was pretty sure he’d come out of a fight on top, but in the long run any fighting at all would just make this shitty situation shittier. Putting himself between Nikolai and Stealth, Drew raised his arms in his best non-threatening gesture and hoped his mouth wouldn’t fail him.

“Whoa, whoa, hey, sir, no one here needs to be hurting anyone today,” he said fast and loose, and if he pitched his voice a little louder than was seemed necessary? Well, besides Stealth he was the only one knowledgeable enough to hope their likely shadow was feeling charitable against this threat of violence.

“I see that you have a very good reason to be angry, but I promise you in this instance that anger is misplaced,” he continued, barely pausing to breathe. “This Weavile is my companion – we’re travelling together, and we’ve just entered the city. Stealth can’t be the monster taking your children.” That he was completely honest about, for all the rest, while not lies in the slightest, were a bit slanted towards a picture not completely truthful. Stealth hadn’t shone himself until around the time they’d entered the Shanty Heights, but even if the timing had allowed it given not days ago they’d both been far away from here, Drew couldn’t imagine Stealth would do such a thing. Snatching Pokémon eggs? Maybe – Stealth was above all else still a Weavile, and the short time of companionship hadn’t yet given Drew a bead on any deviances from species norms Stealth might have. But snatching human kids? No, Stealth wouldn’t do that.

Drew had faith in him.

There were only a few seconds left before he potentially might meet the wrong end of a shovel, and Drew really wanted to avoid that, especially with Stealth still audibly growling - ready to pounce – and generally not making his own case any better. Drew hoped he at least was convincing the man, but one last push couldn’t hurt. “Look, sir, Nikolai, please don’t hurt us or do something you might later regret. We’re just strangers passing through, we’ve never met your kids – any of your kids – before. But, we’d be happy to help. Because that’s what we do: travel around and help where we can in whatever way we can. So please, let us help before you do something you can’t take back.”

Vengeance feels empty, Vigilance feels tense.

Crystal Grove.

Missingno. Master
: This entire adventure had began with a simple case of mistaken identity, and had culminated in the scene before you now. The Black Scarab, wounded yet consumed in a berserker's frenzy. Donovan, the investigator seeking to bring it to justice, having lost his comrades in the Vanguard. Chespin, a trainerless pokemon working with the Marshals with the same goal as Donovan in mind. Amanda, an unfortunate woman caught up in the troubles of the city, tortured by a group more callous than the Rockets you have dealt with, wishing to return to a safer life.

Gemini and Mustard have put up an admirable fight, and despite taking her own share of some heavy hits Ariana had risen to defend your life with the level of loyalty and resilience that would make Cobalion himself nod in respect. Yet, as the shadows whirled around the Scolipede and as Donovan readied the harness in his arm with his Decidueye, it was clear that the battle was going to end one way or another. Meeting the dual gaze of your closest companion, you remove your familiar poisonium Z crystal for another, one that felt cool in your hand as you attached the Icium Z to its position. While not as familiar with the stance, as you bring arms before you, you feel them move on their own accord. Rising above you, one arm crossing over the other, back and forth, like a climbing stalagmite of frost, then jutting out at each side, in the motion of the arms of a snowflake, then forward.

The Z energy flows from your ring towards Gemini and Mustard, yet as this occurs the Scarab snarls in feral rage, shadowy energy erupting in a rave of chaos as spikes of energy rip out of the ground sporadically and in great numbers. As Amanda and Donovan stare in terror and discord respectively, the power envelopes both heads of the Weezing, the energy materializing as some ethereal burning around them, and at your command, their blizzard becomes something else, something familiar...

Despite the shadow energy bursting towards them, the Weezing rises into the air...no, the air beneath them freezes suddenly, pushing them upwards to the height of the ceiling, before Gemini and Mustard open their maws, and inhale. Before them a core of incredibly frigid energy forms, which the pair then blow towards the Black Scarab. In too much of a tantrum to realise, it is only when the frenzied eyes turn to the poison gas pokemon that it realises too late what is about to happen. The subzero energy slams into the shadow pokemon, pushing it into the ground as the air crystallizes and freezes solid around it, icicles building up until the pokemon is completely entombed in a thick layer of ice. As the pokemon closes their mouths, they give but a small bob up before slamming down onto their icy pillar, shattering it into dust. A sound of breaking glass fills the considerably chilled air and the encroaching wave of shadow spikes stops just short of reaching your group, Ariana having stepped before the humans to try and stop the rave, while the tomb of ice violently shatters around the Black Scarab.

As the energy fades, you're brought to a knee, winded but stable, and as Gemini and Mustard focus on the fading mist, you find to your surprise the Scolipede standing there, eyes squeezed shut, carapace trembling in apparent anger...only for the insect to falter and drop to its knees, exhausted. Crimson eyes creak open and glare in your direction, yet as it attempts to strike, do something, it finds itself unable to act, the deep freeze having acted with paralysis to leave it completely vulnerable.

"...alright, got it calibrated. Gimme a wing here Hawkeye..." your ally calls as he stabilises himself with the aid of the owl, a good look at the harness confirming your suspicions: what seems to be a reappropriated snag machine, with a dusk ball in hand. Giving a grunt, Donovan hurls the ball at the Scolipede, whose attempts to deflect or evade the orb fail. It cries out in distress as it is pulled inside, and despite the darkened environment, the ball shakes violently. "Pin piiin!" Chespin cries out before rushing towards the ball and leaping on top of it carefully, utilising his own strength to try and hold the ball shut, teeth gritting as the Black Scarab struggles against its confines and the spiky nut pokemon...until a click echoes throughout the chamber, a sound that may as well be a heavenly chorus.

"...got 'im! Now, let's see here..." Donovan grins as he approaches, while Hawkeye turns to Ariana and gives her a pat on the back. Ariana gained 2 levels. As Chespin hands the Dusk Ball, the investigator hands them their tablet again, before holding the orb before it.

"Is it over?" Amanda asks, to which the man nods. "So lemme explain to Keith...ah! Damn, that's gonna scar...you know that there are three major factions in this city, vying for their own sort of control? We got the marshals, who want everything back before it went to shit...we have the shells, which you probably know by now are bad news." He takes a breath, before continuing.

"Before all this started...I was part of the other group. The Ribs. I still have mates in their side, they're the lesser of two evils. I called quits though, on good terms mind you...this snag machine, custom job. It does what's expected, overriding the lock on trainer owned pokemon allowing for...capture.

"What we got here is the ability to see trainer history of a pokemon. This means we'll be able to suss out who set this monster into the grove. Catching them's a different matter, but so long as we got a name, we're good. Now, what I just did?" Donovan takes another breath as he holds his injury, as you see him falter just a little. "Illegal by every means. I do this knowing I'll be in the cells for a year or so, regardless of how good intentions were. It's time I'm willing to serve though...such is the flaw of going freelance."

At this, Chespin nods, having finished the scanning as the man places the captive Scarab in a pocket of the coat before turning to you and nodding. "You've got my regards, now how about we get the hell out of here? Don't know about you but I'm missing daylight, and from the looks of our friend here, so has she..."

"Y...yes...it's been months I think since I l-last saw the sun..." Amanda whispers, and as Donovan points towards a passage across the chamber, he nods. Taking the lead, Hawkeye helps usher Amanda and Donovan towards the exit to the catacombs, leaving you with Chespin for a moment. Staring at the damp spot where the shadow pokemon was taken down by Gemini and Mustard's Subzero Slammer - a move you note was used as it should in this scenario - you and Meowth begin to realise what's dawning on the grass pokemon. They've brought their old master's killer to some sort of justice, and after processing would have no reason to remain in Goldenridge City. As your feline friend approaches to offer some sympathy and commiserations, the Chespin turns towards you after poking at their tablet, before handing it over, yet even as you read the words the look in their eyes makes it clear as day.

"Job is almost done, but not feeling too happy. Master avenged, but killer's master still at large. Out of my paws now though, will be free when scarab case is closed tomorrow. Thank you for helping, I want to help you back." With a respectful smile, the level 14 Male Chespin with the ability Bulletproof and Egg Move Quick Guard can be captured, and as Donovan calls for your group, whatever decision you make now, you and the group venture onwards, ready to close the lid on this adventure.

Heading through the passage, you find yourself at a metal doorway with Amanda and Donovan, yet neither have ventured further, as you feel a tension in the air. "Listen..." the young woman quietly calls, and as you strain ears, you hear the faint sound of...alarms?

Gripping the handle, you pull down as your wounded allies take a step back as a blast of light dazzles you, and a crackle fills your ears, and as your eyes refocus it becomes terribly evident what the alarms are ringing for. Right in the middle of a town square, hovering from a sizable crevice, unleashing havoc upon the Crystal Grove, is a familiar, gem-studded inorganic being, gigavolts of electricity raining around it, ripping holes in buildings, zapping people and pokemon down into unconsciousness while men in uniforms desperately try and evacuate the area as the setting sun paints a background of fire and brimstone before you. Claydol.

At the cessation of the lightning storm, the pokemon slowly and ominously turns towards you, and lets loose a war cry as Donovan sees for himself what exactly you and Amanda were on about. Despite your last encounter, you notice that the Claydol seems to be noticeably slower in the light, yet the danger it possesses is obvious as panic has set in place. You've already bested one dangerous pokemon, but this threat will require your cunning and your best work as a low hoot behind you makes it clear that Hawkeye is ready to battle, this time as an ally.

In lieu of levels, you received 2 candies for Gemini and Mustard's participation in the battle with the Black Scarab.

"You think I'm cornered? How pitiful," Austin barked.

This wasn't as much of a disadvantage as the Shell would like to think. It's true that Yuke was no match for the Palossand. That wasn't the point of this match. The point was getting Aimee out of the sand castle, and he succeeded. If he wanted to win, he'd use Marie. Wisp was still with him, and that's what he needed. A diversion.

"Wisp, Haze!" He ordered. "If you aren't going to play fair, then neither am I."

With a small tug around his pocket, he pressed the switch on Marie's ball. The Gengar appeared, but didn't speak. The haze was a dead give away that it wasn't proper to speak. This would be over quickly.

"Marie, Shadow Sneak through the Palossand. Ignore it, it's not your target. Its trainer is. When Wisp's haze clears, give him a point blank hypnosis and then send him off into a nightmare," Austin whispered, only loud enough for Marie and Wisp to hear. Now, he just needed to destract that Palossand.

"Yuke, Water Gun and Powder Snow its face, that'll be all."

This wasn't exactly the usual whimsy he experienced in battle. This wasn't fun or exciting. This was serious. Kill only what you need to kill and follow orders. If he wasn't trying to join the Ribs, he'd have Wisp burn the trainer while he was holding Aimee hostage. Yet, he needed her alive. She was out of the castle at the very least... That's all he needed for this to work.

With Keith's movements and shouted command, with the Z-Power flowing into the Weezing, a powerful Z-Move was unleashed! The Black Scarab had gone into a frenzy, lashing out with Shadow Rave, and yet this did not stop the Subzero Slammer from hitting its target. Moreover, this stopped the Shadow Rave just before the shadowy spikes actually reached their intended targets- said targets being literally everyone present other than the Shadow Scolipede. Ariana had stepped between them and the Black Scarab, intending to block the attack as best she could, but this ultimately proved unnecessary.

As the ice shattered around the Scolipede, Keith dropped to a knee as he tried to regain his breath. Z-Moves were taxing on both Pokémon and Trainer, and while he'd had more than a little experience with the Poisonium Z, he wasn't nearly as experienced with using his Icium Z just yet. And as he started to feel better, he could see the Shadow Scolipede collapse as well! Between the intense cold and the paralysis from the Zap Cannon earlier, it was completely vulnerable.

And Donovan knew it, too. He set a Dusk Ball into the harness on his arm, and a much less brief look confirmed Keith's initial suspicion- this was a Snag Machine. A reprehensible device insofar as its intended purpose, but when in the right hands, being used for the right reasons, it could do some good in the world, a fact any longtime resident of the Orre region will no doubt back me up on.

With a grunt, Donovan hurled the sphere at the defenseless Scolipede. As the ball sucked in the Shadow Pokémon and wobbled violently, Chespin ran forward- desperate for this to succeed, the Grass-type attempted to use his own strength to hold the Snag Ball shut. Whether this was necessary or not was unclear, however- the ball clicked shut, and all present breathed a sigh of relief.

And now came the time for Donovan to explain something to Keith. Namely, his past in the Ribs, the other major faction that was at odds with the Shells. He implied them to be the reason he was able to get this custom-built Snag Machine. In addition to doing what one would expect a Snag Machine to do, it also allowed for the viewing of a snagged Pokémon's Trainer history, and in doing so, would let them see just who was responsible for letting the Black Scarab loose on them. So of course this was highly illegal and would get Donovan locked up for a year or so, with no regard to how good his intentions were. "Sucks that you'll have to serve that time, though," Keith stated. "I'm not usually one to believe that the ends justify the means, but... I know that sometimes you gotta do a little bad to do a lot of good, and I think we did a lot of good just now."

Following this, Hawkeye ushered Donovan and Amanda outside. This left Keith and his Pokémon alone with Chespin, who was staring at the spot where the Black Scarab was snagged- said spot now very much damp thanks to the Z-Move that happened there. Chespin was thinking about something, and as Keith and Meowth exchanged glances, they realized just what it was Chespin must be thinking about. With the Black Scarab snagged, and justice soon to be served against the Scolipede's former Trainer, the vengeance Chespin sought was all but complete. Nothing was tying him to Goldenridge anymore, and as Keith realized what this might lead Chespin to do, there was a familiar gleam in his eyes as he practically felt the presence of a certain doll in his backpack...

Meowth hopped down and walked up to Chespin. "So I can't even begin ta picture wat youse went trough," he said. "I ain't neva lost a Trainer like dat and I hope I neva do. But at least dat ting ain't gonna do dis ta nobody else now, ya know?"

Chespin poked at his tablet a bit, before handing the compact computer over to Keith, who read the words. He nodded understandingly. "Yeah, I get it- no amount of vengeance will bring your old Trainer back. Sometimes... no matter how hard you try... sometimes life is just like that, taking away those we care about. And all we can do is try to make sure life is like that to as few others as possible. Like what we just did now, really. He saw that Chespin was smiling, and he smiled back at the Grass-type after reading the final words. A moment or two of eye contact was sufficient to spell out to Keith exactly what Chespin had been getting at. "Chespin," said Keith, digging into his backpack. "I'd love to have your help. I don't pretend to be a replacement for your old Trainer, but I think we'll make a good team regardless." At this, he produced a red-and-white sphere from his pocket (the third of a set of five) and held it out to Chespin. "Come with us, Chespin," he invited the Spiny Nut Pokémon.

"Yeah, we'd be glad ta have ya," Meowth agreed.

"Weezing weez," nodded Gemini and Mustard.

"Gaaaarbodor!" smiled Ariana.

With this warm welcome, how could Chespin refuse, especially since this was his intention anyway? He tapped the button on Keith's Poké Ball and was sucked inside right away. The ball barely wobbled before, for the second time that day, that familiar click echoed around chamber.

Keith grinned happily as he looked at the Poké Ball in his hand. "All right!" he exclaimed, standing back up and holding the ball up high. "I just caught... a Chespin!"

"Meowth! Dat's right!" Meowth added.

Keith dug his hand into his backpack once more, this time into the Key Items pocket. And it was with a considerably softer smile, and more than a few tears in his eye that he withdrew from within his most prized possession- a small, handmade Chespin doll. Having just seen and caught the real thing, Keith was struck anew by how every detail on the doll was spot-on, by how much care had gone into making this. How much love. "...It brought me good luck in catching one after all," he murmured, smiling even as the tears fell- the doll, even after all this time, still radiated feelings of warmth and happiness.

Meowth, knowing exactly what the significance of this doll was to Keith, allowed him about thirty seconds before climbing back up on his shoulder. And at that moment, Donovan called back for them, and away they went.

Once through the passage, Keith caught up to the others at some sort of metal door. And there seemed to be a damn good reason as to why none of them had traveled further. There was tension in the air, and faint alarms sounding from the other side of the door. Though uncertain what awaited them, it was Keith who braved it, who pulled on the door handle, who dazzled the lot of them with sunlight, who showed them all exactly why the alarms were ringing.

It was the Z-Crystal-studded Claydol.

"...Oh, crap!" Keith and Meowth exclaimed simultaneously. The angry Pokémon was on a rampage, seemingly slower in the sunlight, but no less of a threat, firing off what had to be the Electric-type Z-Move left and right.

Keith was terrified of this thing. After how handily it defeated his powerful Seviper, who could blame him? But no more running. Last time, he had to run- he was in no position to fight. But now? Now there was no choice but to fight. But it was times like these when Keith Golbatson Masters stepped up and did what needed done.

"OK," Keith exhaled. "Gemini, Mustard, I'm counting on you two. That Claydol is not normal- it seems to use nothing but Z-Moves. Ready?"

"Weezing weez," came the confident replies.

Keith nodded, now with a slight grin. "Then let's show Claydol what we got! Gemini, Toxic, let's go! Follow up with Shadow Ball and then let it taste your Blizzard!"

Sandaa- Fueled by rage, Tyrant undergoes a miraculous evolution, breaking free from his confined form and revealing his true strength as a Tyranitar. You notice a slight waver in Duke's confidence, as if for a moment he doubts that he and Artemis can overcome the newly evolved Tyrant. As Artemis belches a stream of dragon fire in Tyrant's direction, the Tyranitar shrugs off the blow with little doubt. Fearing the Tyranitars new found strength, Artemis makes for a ledge, well out of reach of the opposing Rock type.

Tyrant roars at the retreating Aerodactyl, whipping his tail around he bombards the Mega Aerodactyl with razor sharp stones. Artemis finally shows signs of weakness as she lets out a shrill screech of pain. She crashes down onto the ledge, sinking her claws into the stone as she attempts to roost off some of her pain. Tyrant grins with delight, not planning to give the Flying type any reprieve from his onslaught. He lets out another tremendous bellow as he charges into the mountain, shaking it with the force of an earthquake. Artemis is shook from her roost before she can regain much health, causing Duke to muffle a swear as he kicks at the ground. Displeased that he rest was interrupted, Artemis dives towards Tyrant, wings glistening like sterling silver. Tyrant readies himself, coating his spiked head in a layer of iron, preparing for the clash of steel on steel.

The two Pokemon collide with tremendous force, kicking up a explosion of sand that temporarily conceals the outcome of the clash. As the sand settles there is a clear victor, as an unconscious Aerodactyl lays motionless at Tyrant's feet.

"Arceus darn it", spouts Duke, "I really thought I had you on the ropes!" The trainer recalls his Aerodactyl. "You don't pull your punches, that's for sure. Keep making your way up the mountain, you're getting close to your destination.

Meetan- The officer notes down parts of what you say, compiling a rough outline of the events and people involved. Feeling that he has gathered enough information from you, the officer puts away his pen and pad.

"Thank you for your cooperation ma'am, I believe I have all I need from you, I'll make my way over to the Pokemon Center to get a statement from David. We'll have to compile a case, before we go after the brother, if we can put enough heat on him the Ribs might just abandoned him, rather than put themselves at risk defending him, we've seen it before. There are much bigger things going on, a family feud is unfortunately the least of our worries but thankfully it is likely also the least of theirs. We'll make sure the boy and his friends are well protected and looked after until the case is resolved. We've recently set up a small trainer school in the Crystal Grove for kids just like this, I'm sure they'll appreciate the opportunity and the safety."

The officer gives you some time to relax and take in the information. He realizes that you have been through quite a traumatic experience but the immediate threat had passed and the marshals were the best suited to bringing the brother in, given there experience with the gangs. "You and Terry are welcome to catch a ride with me to the Pokemon Center, I'm sure your friends are eager to see you both."

Ribs vs Shells. Right vs Left. East vs West. Hugo hated to label himself, but if he had to, he considered himself to be a Centrist. He always felt that, in most cases, there was merit to be found on both sides of any argument. And at the very least that both sides should be able to have reasonable discourse and respect for each other’s views so long as nobody’s views hurt another party. As such, when he decided to venture in Bedlam Ridge, he wanted to be sure to avoid the “turf” areas held by the Shells and Ribs; he didn’t want to give the appearance that he was in support of one or the other. Rather, he wanted to explore the neutral territories. And nothing seemed more appealing to him than the Quarry.

They said there were riches to be found in the Quarry and Hugo felt that he had just as much right to it as anyone else.

Hugo tightened the laces on his hiking boots and looked down into the quarry. Covered with jagged peaks and unstable footholds, he knew he was in for a challenge; both physical and mental. But he was confident that his team would be able to conquer the terrain...wasn’t he? He had several Rock and Ground types at his disposal if needed that would be right at home, there was nothing to worry about. At least that’s what he convinced himself to believe. Taking a deep breath, Hugo took his first step down into the quarry, both eager and anxious to see where this adventure would lead.

"Oh no, of course. You're welcome." Alice rambled off automatically, never forgetting her manners. She listened along with the officer's theory, hoping for the best that the Ribs really would just abandon the troublemaking brother. Quite frankly he deserved life behind bars followed by eternal damnation for the shit he'd caused. Alice would be quite happy to borrow Marowak's club and crack his own bones with it, too, and the image of pounding the brutal object into the young man's stomach provided a worrying amount of satisfaction.

"Yeah, I totally understand. It sucks, but it is what it is." Alice went on. Bedlam Ridge was just a hot mess all over, which was a shame, because it had once been an amazing place and easily could be again if people just got their shit together. "And that school sounds perfect. I'd be down for visiting it, too, sometime. I know some great trainers who'd be perfect examples and role models for them." Maybe she could be, too one day?

"Oh, yeah, thank you. We'd love to! Come on, everyone." Alice took out the Love Balls of her team- bc fuck continuity they all always had them praise Raves etc - and returned most of her squad. She left Peaches the Pichu be at least, figuring she'd enjoy the ride in the back of the police car. Hey, it wasn't for a crime, so it was fine! The electric mouse hopped into her arms. Terry would probably like the pink Pokemon's company, too- and so would she, her adorable electro ball of energy a sweet support in this rough time. She opened the door for Terry to get into the car first and followed after him.

Gary was in awe as his newly evolved Tyranitar ripped right through the Mega Aerodactyl’s defensive strategy and charged forward with a devastating onslaught of attacks. “Go, Tyrant!” Gary called out, pumping his fist into the air while the Tyranitar bellowed a ferocious roar and slammed into the Aerodactyl. The pteranodon crashed down into the mountainside, defeated. Gary couldn’t help but grin as he ran over to hug the large green dinosaur. “You did it, Tyrant! Great job! I’m so proud of you!” The tall Tyranitar looked a bit confused at first, but softened and smiled down at his trainer and let out a satisfied grunt. It would have been hard to imagine that this was the same reptile that was on a ferocious warpath just moments before.

Duke congratulated Gary and Tyrant on a hard fought battle, and Gary smiled and shook his hand. “I appreciate you guys for pushing Tyrant hard enough to evolve!” Tyrant gave a quick nod of his head before Gary returned him back into his ball for a much deserved rest. It was finally time to continue his path up the mountain. He had already made it through three challenging battles, but that meant Gary was only halfway done. If this is what he had to go through at only the halfway mark, he wondered how strong the opponents yet to come would be. With everything here all but wrapped up, Gary thanked Duke again and bid him farewell. Setting his sights on the mountain path, Gary resumed his quest onward and upward, ready to face whatever was in store for him next.

Sandaa- You continue up the path, which continues to get steeper as you travel up through the cloudline. Visibility is limited for a time as you find yourself having to look closely at your feet to ensure you find the steps. The cloud eventually clears as you reach the summit, a large granite arena spreads out in front of you, steps on the far side lead up into a small cave. A pair of well dressed trainers make their way down the steps, hand in hand. The woman wears a long flowing gown of royal purple, while the man is clad in a tailored white suit.

"Congratulations for making it to the final challenge", the pair speak in perfect unison. "The mystery of Mega Evolution awaits you, but first you must prove yourself one more time." With a click of their fingers the two seem to magically summon a pair of Pokemon to the battlefield. A Gardevoir and Gallade appear with a flash, teleporting in from a nearby location. Both trainers and Pokemon raise their left hands, each one wears a ring holding a stone. By this point your more than familiar with what is going on, as the stones erupt with energy, the bond between trainer and Pokemon causing the Pokemon to take on a new, stronger form. The Mega Gardevoir and Mega Gallade began to give off a tonne of Psychic energy, you find yourself developing a headache.

"You're final test will be a double battle. Succeed and you will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of Mega Evolution from our master."

Meetan- You are hastily driven to the Pokemon Center by the Marshal. The center is quite busy, there was always something going on in Bedlam, always another Pokemon to look after. The Marshal leads you straight to David's room. You enter to find David standing over a bed, Janey alongside him. Marowak rested on the bed, the rise and fall of its chest was steady, it was going to be okay. A crack split down the middle of its skull where the bullet had hit, it was lucky the bullet had failed to penetrate through the skull.

"You're here!" Janey cries out as she spots Terry and yourself. A temporary smile cracks across David's concerned face, the boy looks glad to see you. The officer informs them that he needs statements, so David, Terry and Janey follow him to another room, leaving you to watch over Marowak. The kids return after about an hour, it seems the Marshal had quite a bit to talk to them about.

"We're going up to the trainer school tomorrow", David informed you once they returned. "They will teach us the skills we need to become trainers, maybe one day we'll be able to travel around the region like you Alice. We'll go see what we can recover from the house in the morning before we head up to the Crystal Grove."

"We should probably all get some rest", Janey suggested, "the nurse said there are some beds for us down the hall, David I think you need to come as well." Janey looked concerned, probably because she knew David would insist on staying with Marowak.

"Come on bud", Terry put a hand on the other boys shoulder, "let's leave him to rest up." David didn't argue, he knew the best thing to do was let Marowak rest. The group of you retire to the bunks, after such a hectic day it isn't long before you are all snoring away......

The morning comes around quickly. Marowak is awake when you return to its room, it seemed to have recovered for the most part. The nurses agreed that Marowak had recovered enough to leave, however they instructed David to avoid battles for a little while. The group of you make your way back to the charred ruins of David's house. After some scavenging, only a few things are salvaged from the ruins. Some personal belongings of David's and a few bits and bobs. David hands you 4 Rare Candies , leftovers from the party. Terry and Janey dump 15 pieces of Charcoal at your feet. "I heard that Charcoal can be valuable to the right person", Terry informs you, although it's doubtful that he knows what he is talking about.

Next comes the tearful goodbye as the trio rush to embrace you. "Once we're real trainers you'll have to battle with us", Janey cries. "We'll never forget all that you have done for us", spurts Terry. "Wallop and I owe you everything", David can barely hold it together. "Oh right, I decided to take your advice and give Marowak a nickname! We promise to make the most out of the opportunity we're being given, I want to forget my past life, my brother included. Once we're confident we'll leave Bedlam for good, hopefully before the whole town goes up in smoke. Best wishes Alice, I hope we meet again." The trio attempt to hold back the tears as they walk away, heading towards the safety of the Crystal Grove.

Left out the front of a burnt house with a pile of charcoal at your feet, you're not really sure what to do next. Suddenly a man comes rushing down the street. "Well look at my luck", cheers the man. The balding fellow sports a tattered business suit, he wipes the sweat from his brow as he hastily grasps your hand. "The name is Gil Gunderson from Gil's Goods and Services. That is some fine looking charcoal you've got there, how about I take that off your hands? It's hard to get Charcoal this fresh, I'll give you $1500 for the lot!"

It looked like you'd found someone willing to purchase the charcoal, Terry was right after all!

You're adventure with me is complete! You may sell the charcoal to Gil or you can deal with having 15 Charcoals in your inventory...... Hope you enjoyed the adventure!

To Alice's relief, Marowak was going to be okay. There was a crack down its mask, which she thought was sad given where their skulls came from originally, but it hadn't pierced its actual head. She smiled back at David, saddened but unsurprised by his hollow expression, but she could at least be glad that these kids were going somewhere safe. Alice had tried to inspire them, to show them that there was a whole world of hope out there for them to explore-- and they would see this for themselves after all. What more could the trainer ask for?

They all went off to bed, and Alice made sure to have some Pokemon guarding their room. It was partially for herself. After nearly being killed, after seeing the Marowak like that and being so close to a burning building (fire was one of, if not her worst fear), she needed the comfort of her team. Lorin was quite happy lounging in the partially filled shower, and Jasper was spending the night silently watching them over, the rest of her team sound asleep in a bundle of blankets and a sleeping bag that she had withdrawn from the computer in the main room. Morning came and off they all went to the house. Alice supposed it wasn't a huge loss, but there had to be some sentimentalities that the flames had wiped from the world – and that would suck more than losing any money might, even to these kids.

Alice was surprised when they rushed her, breaking out into a loving grin despite herself. She wrapped her arms around the tearful trio, their own emotions making her well up all the same. “Oh, yeah, for sure. And I won't forget you all, either – of course I won't.” Alice said to them, rubbing their backs and petting their hair, careful not to mess it up. “That's a cool name. And it's okay if you don't forget your past, just make sure to learn from it and don't make the same mistakes other people here have. I'll try to visit you all before you head out, but if I don't manage it, I'm sure we'll run into each other somehow. If I've achieved my own dreams by then, hopefully you'll know where to find me.”

Calling after them that she loved them and to be good, Alice was alone with charcoal at her feet. Not for long, though. A salesman had come to take it all away, which was fine by her because he was paying good money for it. A shake of hands, and Alice had an extra $1500 with four candies for the mess (plus what she'd been given the day before). Not a bad haul, but Alice was certainly over Bedlam Ridge for now.

Quote:
Marshal's Headquarters (Marshals): Situated in the relatively stable north, the headquarters of the police force is a large compound with tight security, home to the Goldenridge Marshals in their fight to restore the name of Goldenridge to bedlam. The force has recently started a campaign against the Shells and Ribs, seeking to push them out of the city once and for all, and are willing to accept mercenary support from trainers willing to help out in the fight. The reinforced location seems to be more attractive to pokemon who enjoy a sense of justice and honour. Reply in Silver.
… But, eventually, the young woman made her glorious return.

She had not forgotten the children now residing in Crystal Grove, and perhaps they were already off into the world, embarking on their own journeys. Alice Hope had certainly grown a lot since her last visit to this location, albeit not physically. Between the Rose Garden competition, helping to defend her home from the Snowdown and the various celebrations around New Fizz, Alice's reputation as a trainer and an idol had increased tenfold. It was pretty awesome. Her vlogs and other social media were booming, and although Alice was busier than ever, being an idol here was different than the world she had once thought she hailed from. She could still be a trainer of justice and in fact, that helped more than hurt a career – not that her career was the main reason for doing it.

Alice had her own aims for coming to Bedlam, of course, but for now she had decided to stop by the Marshall's Headquarters. It was spring, and while plenty were still in jeans and jackets, the blonde was as overheated as per usual. She had on a black tank dress, the ends cutting off above the knees and stylishly ruffled and tattered. Everything else was in her trademark vibrant pink: sneakers with silver studs, a layered necklace of beads, bracelet and earrings. Another black crossbody bag. Still not risking pickpockets, even in an area with such a police presence.

Zoey had accompanied her, the shiny Zubat's flight and sonar comforting in getting around without having to look over her shoulder all of the time. Designer sunglasses taken off, Alice swapped them out for ordinary prescription lenses, rocking up to the reception desk. Her Pokemon fluttered to land, manicured and sparkly nails absently ruffling the Pokemon's fine fur. “Good afternoon. I'm Alice Hope. It was quite a few months ago but I helped out with a case in Shanty Heights with an arson and a Marowak that was seriously injured. I was wondering if the Marshal that dealt with that still worked here?” She asked. “It's okay if not. I just know that the police here are after trainers that can help out with stuff going on in Bedlam, and since he knows me a bit already, he might feel more comfortable giving me work to do.” She laughed and shrugged. “I did bring my Abra again, if anything with teleporting is required, but my other Pokemon are tough cookies as well.”

Well, if they didn't have anything for her mission wise, Alice already knew one thing about Bedlam. If the group didn't go looking for trouble, it'd come looking for them... Possibly on motorbikes, with fucking molotovs, but anyway.
