3 day fast challenge

BPK came to me with a recent article that a "three day fast" once per year is supposed to improve brainpower, memory retention, and reduce cancer risk. He did it earlier in November and I did it right now.

Anyone else want to take the challenge? I mean, if you're not participating in NNN, might as well do this kind of abstinence, right?

You might have to elaborate on what this entails. If there is a 3 day slow version I might do that instead, though.

You don't eat for 3 days, you just drink water. (I actually barely drank any water).

BPK actually planned his out while, I, being late, stupidly did it at a bad time because I've fasted before and got arrogant.

I ate a light meal before starting the fast, started in the middle of the night right before a work week. Big mistake! I was feeling horrible by day 2, unlike prior fasts, and barely made it through day 3.

Here's some testimonials.

BPK Challenge

DCD: shoot, I will start Saturday then

McSweeney: Yeah I started last night because I want to end Sunday evening and not have it go into Monday where I have to go to work totally famished

McSweeney: I strategically placed it where I only had to work today, Friday, mildly hungry. And then I can jsut waste away the whole weekend

McSweeney: Not only have I not gone more than 24 hours without food in my life, but I have also not gone a day without having at least one cup of coffee for many decades. Caffeine deprivation is also a weird feeling. I was sluggish AF at work today

DCD: I've adjusted well to that. After a while you don't need it. I had alertness problems in spite of the caffiene.

McSweeney: I heard conflicting information on whether it's okay to drink coffee with cream on a fast or not, but I figured: why risk it? If I'm going to fast for 3 freaking days I might as well do it right and not screw it up for the sake of some coffee

DCD: Also caffiene made me dumb.

McSweeney: Yeah I've heard that. You feel like crap at first but your body adjusts and you actually feel better than when you were on coffee
DAY TWO

McSweeney: Well the sluggishness feeling peaked last night, but I actually feel better after waking up. And it was very easy to sleep because the fasted state makes me feel tired

McSweeney: Oh, and I also have had a headache the whole time. But I suspect that has more to do with the caffeine withdrawal
DAY THREE

McSweeney: No way!! Fasting for 3 days every 3 days? That's ridiculous

DCD: ehh...seems I misunderstood something.

McSweeney: Maybe you're confusing my permanent switch to intermittent fasting. That's something totally separate from the 3 day fast

McSweeney: Intermittent fasting = I am not allowed to eat from 8:00 PM to 12:00 noon. Every day

McSweeney: This 3 day fast = I don't eat a single morsel of food for 72 horus straight. A one off thing.

McSweeney: So I have not eaten since Thursday 8:00 PM and I just need to make it until 8:00 tonight

McSweeney: I don't feel that bad really

McSweeney: Weirdly, I felt the worst Friday night

DCD: I will start my own on Monday then.

McSweeney: Well I'll tell you how I feel afterwards. If it made no difference then there's no point

McSweeney: I shudder to think how much strength I'll have lost after this

McSweeney: I bet I've lost at least 7 pounds

McSweeney: 4 more hours until my sweet sweet meal!!!

McSweeney: I'm dyin boys

DCD: I've fasted for 2 days before.

DCD: Not 3 though.

DCD: I'm used to fasting for 1 day at a time.

McSweeney: Actually I exaggerate. I don't really feel that bad

McSweeney: Although when I walked, it felt like lactic acid built up at an extremely accelerated rate

McSweeney: And I felt "fragile" like if I tripped and fell I'd break my knee

McSweeney: The effects feel similar to sleep deprivation

DCD: actually I feel good during a fast except for the intense drowsiness

McSweeney: I kind of like the drowsiness actually. Makes it easy to sleep

DCD: I don't. I can't wake up.

McSweeney: But yeah, Friday, my eyes were burning red from drowsiness. Weird how Friday was the hardest day (was only fasting for 24 hours at that point)

DCD: you know glycogen

McSweeney: WHen I was out walking I was also slightly delusional like when I'm suffering from sleep deprivation. I couldn't tell if my headache was from the cold or internally

McSweeney: Yeah

DCD: you have glycogen in your blood and the body taps into that when free glucose is depleted

McSweeney: WHen working out they always tell you to "fill your glycogen stores" by eating carbs, like pasta

DCD: so most likely Friday was your transition from free glucose to glycogen

DCD: well that's a bit misleading

DCD: carbs go into free glucose and fat

DCD: not necessarily glycogen

DCD: you can get glycogen built up from protein actually

DCD: since all meat has some sugar in the cells

The reason for the 3 day fast is, apparently, when you combine fasting with exercising (well, what little exercise you CAN do not having eaten for days), a phenomenon called autophagy occurs where your body starts "eating itself", which means it expels old, dead cells so new ones can replace them. So it's a repair and refresh for your body and brain. There's scientific papers supporting this phenomenon, although few studies have been done and more are needed.

When I ate my first meal after the 3 day fast, it wasn't even super delicious or anything because my mouth and stomach felt numb and I didn't even feel the food.

I missed this happening last year. That's what I get for not looking at UPN.

Interested in another fast challenge this year?

I'm up for it. I have a lot of practice doing the 2 day fast as after this one, I did it for about 1/3 of the year.

I need to get in shape again anyway. =3= No excuses now...

Come on man, just take a (diet) 4 hour energy.

Your odds of success are higher than the Sixers or Phillies making the playoffs.

I'm not even sure I could make it 3 days. I tried a couple years ago to see how long I could fast, just out of sheer curiosity. I made it 2 full days before I started to feel weak and ended it there. Since then I've done a few 1 to 1.5 day fasts and those are no problem. So this time might be a real challenge. I really don't know what will happen when I pass that 2-day threshold. Seems scary, but hey, maybe we can suffer together.

Phoopy maybe you can try a 1.5 day fast with us to test the waters? Basically eat your last meal in the evening on Day 0, then fast for all of Day 1, and then eat breakfast in the morning on Day 2.

I'm still waiting on a response from BPK, he's really busy with his "lettering". Who knew handwriting required a law degree!

The best time to do this is a morning, so when the fast ends, you can eat. Last time I started in the evening which created a problem because once the fast ends, you can't just start eating since you need to go to bed. So you either eat before bed which keeps you awake, or you fast another 8 hours or so before morning the next day.

So I recommend 8:00 AM on Thursday Nov 11, so the fast ends on Sunday Nov 14. That way you get the rest of Sunday to recover for the work week.

Even this sounds incredibly difficult for me haha. When it comes to food I have very little willpower and am even used to eating a late night snack/fourth meal in a day. I know late night snacks/meals aren’t particularly healthy though so maybe I should start by cutting those out

You could try an intermittent fasting diet to build up to it. Basically choose some time window, like 12 PM to 8 PM, where you can eat, and then don't eat anything outside that window. It will force you to have healthy, complete meals during the eating window as opposed to snacking. And over time, it really does eliminate the late night snack cravings.

I've also tried it in conjunction with keto and it makes it a LOT stronger.

Intermittent fasting is the hip youth's way of saying "skip a meal". It's definitely doable!

Could also be "skip a meal... and a whole lot of late night snacking", which would make it really beneficial.

Night snacking conditions you to expect and seek out food at night. It's self-reinforcing! Actually, I think all eating schedules are self-reinforcing. Like if you start skipping breakfast, you stop feeling hungry in the mornings.

I am guessing your eating schedule might be a predictor of your fasting experience. The peak challenge will be during the times when you normally have daily meals and the hunger signals come. And then in the interim times, the hunger signals quiet down, and you might even forget that you're fasting. At least, that's my experience in shorter term fasts. This 3-day thing is uncharted territory for me.

If you make it to day two then you have my respect nonetheless.

Want to begin on the 18th? It's going to be most convenient for me to do this later in the month, but the 18th is fine to avoid running into any holiday plans you might have.

Any sign of Mcsweeney? I'm also good to wait until Mcsweeney is ready before we begin.

It worked.

When is The Last Supper? I'm good with either the 11th of November (tonight) or the 18th.

If you are doing this fast I want everyone to know you might need to buy some potassium supplements pills. If you eat NOTHING and just drink water, you might find some kidney distress due to electrolyte imbalance. Eating some potassium corrects the problem.

No substances except water allowed in my body until Sunday, November 14, 2021. 10:45 PM. My kidneys will just have to suck it up!

I'm doing okay so far. I'm still full from the gigantic meal I had last night. Tomorrow should be the worst day if last year's experience is anything to go by.
