"Gotcha, Dad. Tentacruel, let's try again!" "Tentacruuuuel!" Willa Masters looked on at her husband and daughter. The pair of them were standing at the water's edge in the small seaside town of Sludge Wave Coast in which they lived. Their Tentacruel were in the water in front of them, and while Keith's was the stronger of the two, it was Maribel's Tentacruel that had the advantage in size, easily dwarfing Aquarius. But size wasn't everything, and it wasn't uncommon for Tentacruel to turn to Aquarius for help getting the hang of new moves. In this case, Maribel and her Tentacruel were hoping to work on Poison Jab, and Keith was only too happy to help out on this- he wasn't known far and wide across Fizzytopia as a Poison-type master for nothing, after all. But, as happy as Willa was to see the two people she loved more than anything in the world spending such quality time together, there was something eating at her at the same time. "How did it go?" Willa asked Keith and Maribel when they came back. "It went well," Keith smiled. "Tentacruel hasn't really started to learn Poison Jab just yet, but she's gotten a good grasp of the movement involved, and that's a more important first step than you might think." "I'm gonna keep working with Tentacruel after lunch," Maribel declared. "Dad, Mom, you coming?" she added as she started to head back towards the Poisonous Palace. Keith began to nod and head off that way himself, but Willa gently held him back. "We'll be right with you, sweetie," Willa said. "Something up, dear?" Keith asked, his expression showing more concern once he saw the look in his wife's eyes. "...what's wrong?" he asked. "I... it's not that there's anything wrong," Willa began uncertainly. "I just... watching you and Maribel, it got me thinking... I felt a little... I suppose... left out. I... I don't have any Poison-type Pokémon, you know," she said. "And it's not as though I don't want one, either, you understand, it's just..." "...just what?" Keith asked, not unkindly. Willa looked down. "I worry that if I were to train a Poison-type, you might... become jealous, or... think that I'm trying to... to steal your thunder, or... something of that sort..." Willa looked progressively more embarrassed as she continued. Keith put an arm around his wife. "That would never happen," he said simply. "I know," nodded Willa. "I mean, now I know. I mean- just- now that I've said it out loud, it sounds ridiculous, but-" "-but when it was just in your head it seemed all too real a possibility?" Keith finished. "Yeah, that'll do it. And honestly, if anything, if you caught yourself a Poison-type, and ended up doing seriously well with it, I would find that so awesome," he smiled. "And if you'd allow me, I would be more than happy to help you with training it. At this, Willa finally smiled, meeting her husband's gaze. "...I'd like that," she nodded. ~~~~~ Once the Masterses had finished eating their lunch, Keith and Willa explained to Maribel what was going on, and the young Trainer was content to stay behind and continue training with her Tentacruel. This left Keith and Willa to head on out in search of a good spot to catch a Poison-type Pokémon. "...and if Tom wasn't out sailing with Gavin to help him look for sea-dwelling Shiny Pokémon, I'd have asked him to take us to Venom Island in the Cascadia Archipelago," Keith was saying. "Oh, yes, you said that's where you caught Strychnine?" Willa inquired. Keith nodded to confirm this. "Though honestly, it's Aduro Island I really want to revisit someday, along with Kyle, so his family can see how much he's grown," he smiled. "But yeah- I'm thinking our best bet today is the swamp Route 12 passes through, and what timing, here we are," he added grinning as they could see the path ahead surrounded by marshy wetlands. Willa wrinkled her nose at the smell of the place, but was less bothered by it than she figured she might be- she had, after all, spent the past decade married to a Poison-type specialist, and therefore, spent a lot of time around various Poison-types, for her and Keith's Pokémon had taken quite active roles in helping the two of them raise Maribel. She had memories of Gemini and Mustard proving to be far more responsible babysitters than most might take a Weezing for; Strychnine offering herself as a temporary bed when Elliott and Eelektross accidentally destroyed her old crib; and Nagini hissing such soothing lullabies that Keith joked about his Arbok learning Sing, among many, many other things. But she didn't allow these recollections to distract her, for now they were walking through the swamp (the path was mercifully raised above water level, even if only by a little), and they had to keep their eyes peeled. But so far, all either of them could see were the occasional Barboach. "Hmm- is that a Poké Ball?" Willa inquired, spotting what appeared to be the iconic red and white sphere poking out of some grass. "Wait a second," Keith said seriously, for Willa had begun to reach out for it. "Check it with your Pokédex first." "All right...?" Willa murmured in confusion, but all the same she took out her Pokédex and scanned the object in question. "Foongus, the Mushroom Pokémon. A Grass and Poison-type," droned the device. "It lures people in with its Poké Ball pattern, then releases poison spores." "...Oh," Willa murmured in surprise as the Foongus showed itself properly, hopping away. "I see. Well, as much as I like your Amoonguss, I'm not sure I'll go for one myself." "Totally fair," Keith nodded. "Now, let's keep- oh! Oop!" For at that moment, as he turned to continue moving forward, he found that the way forward was impeded by a small blue creature, who stood in their way, looking up at Willa with an unreadable expression. "Croa... croa... croa..." croaked the Pokémon softly, inflating its cheeks with each croak. Willa, intrigued, aimed her Pokédex at the creature. "Croagunk, the Toxic Mouth Pokémon. A Poison and Fighting-type," droned the device. "It rarely fights fairly, albeit strictly to ensure survival. It intimidates opponents with eerie blubbering noises, then strikes with the Poison Jab. Croagunk is the pre-evolved form of Toxicroak." "I thought so," Willa said with a small smile. She produced an Ultra Ball from her bag and enlarged it. "Let's try this, then," she stated, throwing the ball. "Probopass!" she declared as the Compass Pokémon materialized in a flash of light. "Uh... I'm not certain Probopass is the best choice," Keith murmured warily. "Steel might be immune to Poison, but Probopass is super weak to Fighting..." "Hm, yes, true, I hadn't considered that," Willa admitted. "But there's no point in not trying all the same," she persisted. "Probopass! Deploy the Mini-Noses! Flash Cannon from all angles!" she commanded. "PRO BO PASS!" Probopass declared. The Mini-Noses detached themselves and began to circle Croagunk, who eyed them unconcernedly. Then, it jumped suddenly, before the first attack was launched, dodging the first Flash Cannon! The other Mini-Noses were quick to adjust their angles, and so did manage to strike Croagunk, but a powerful red aura coming over the Croagunk's body told Willa all she needed to know before the Croagunk came and landed a single powerful punch, the sheer power of the Revenge knocking Probopass clean out! "...Return now, Probopass!" Willa declared, withdrawing her unconscious Pokémon, Mini-Noses and all. However, she betrayed a slight smirk at Croagunk. "Powerful," she said, sounding impressed. "I can see there's to be no holding back against you." 'Croa," the Croagunk grinned back. And so Willa threw another Ultra Ball. "Corsola!" she declared as her Galarian Corsola materialized, floating in midair before her. Croagunk eyed this opponent, shuddering in Anticipation of the fight ahead. "Interesting," Keith murmured. "Ghost is a good matchup against Croagunk's types, but Croagunk are known to have some good moves to use against them as well..." "Croa... Croa... CroooaaAAAGAGAGAGAGAGAGAAA!" Croagunk exclaimed suddenly, its soft croaking turning abruptly into an eerie blubbering noise that caught Corsola off-guard. And the second the Astonish did its thing, Croagunk sprang into action, striking from an unexpected angle for a super effective Feint Attack! Keith and Willa both winced as they heard the cracking sound of dead, brittle coral as Craogunk slammed into Corsola, but Willa quickly smirked as she saw a strange purple aura briefly come over Croagunk's whole Body, giving it something of a Cursed look. "Corsola," Willa called out. "Can you still battle?" "Cooooorsola!" Corsola responded with a ghostly yet determined moan as he wheeled around to face Croagunk. Willa nodded. "Then use Strength Sap!" she ordered. "Coooooorsola!" Corsola declared as the wispy echoes of coral branches emanating from the holes in his body turned a bright green. They then extended outward, seeming to pierce Croagunk's body, though thanks to their ethereal nature, they did not physically harm the Poison/Fighting-type. Rather, the damage done was to Croagunk's Attack power, which Corsola was draining away and using to restore his own health. "Psychic, now!" Willa commanded. "Coooor-" "CROAGAH!" Croagunk exclaimed suddenly, lunging unexpectedly at Corsola, cutting short the Psychic attack with a Sucker Punch! And though the Strength Sap had softened the blow, still more cracking sounds could be heard from Corsola's body. Willa in particular looked alarmed to see that the usage of Strength Sap hadn't healed up those cracks. However, as Croagunk went to try its next move, it was once more coated in that sinister aura from before, and was unable to move. "Croa!?" Croagunk croaked in surprise. Willa smirked. "I knew it- Croagunk must have been trying another Feint Attack," she stated. "Not realizing its first one set off Cursed Body!" "Sola!" Corsola declared happily, seemingly not caring for the progressively worsening state of its coral body. He then launched the Psychic attack as ordered, bombarding the helpless Croagunk with a forceful telekinetic blast! For a few moments, Croagunk and Corsola simply stared each other down. Willa took a breath, prepared to give another command, when Croagunk began to glow! And not only that, but at the same time, bright light shone from within the cracks on Corsola's body. The wispy branches of coral retreated back into the shell as more cracks formed. The coral body dropped like the stone it so resembled, and as it hit the ground, it shattered completely, causing Willa to stifle a gasp of horror. However, the bottom part remained intact, and the glowing mass it was holding up was now starting to rise into the air. Wispy ghostly energy trailed from it back down to the coral base, and also branched out all around it. And when the glow faded, a stood in Corsola's place! At the same time, Croagunk grew larger, with a horn protruding from its head, and a large, sharp claw protruding from each hand, and emerged from the glow as a powerful-looking Toxicroak- this was not lost on Keith or Willa by any means, but what had their attention at the moment was the transformation Willa's Corsola had just undergone. "Did...?" Keith murmured. "They both... evolved?" Willa said wonderingly. "But... I didn't even think Corsola could evolve!" She took out her Pokédex and pointed it at each newly evolved Pokémon in turn. "Toxicroak, the Toxic Mouth Pokémon. A Poison and Fighting-type, and the evolved form of Croagunk," droned the device. "Toxicroak has a poison sac at its throat. When it croaks, the stored poison is churned for more potency." Then, Willa turned it to her own Pokémon. "Cursola, the Coral Pokémon. A Ghost-type, and the evolved form of Galarian Corsola," it continued. "Cursola's shell overflows with its heightened otherworldly energy. The ectoplasm protects the Pokémon's core spirit." "So it specifically evolves from Galarian Corsola, I see," nodded Willa. "Cursola, are you ready to keep going?" Cursola nodded. "Cuuuursola," he replied, the ghostly moan now somewhat deeper. "ToxiiiiiiCROOOOAK!" Toxicroak blubbered suddenly, letting fly a Mud Bomb. "Ice Beam, now!" Willa commanded. "Cuuuursola!" Cursola wailed, letting fly a beam of frigid energy. The Mud Bomb froze solid and shattered as the beam continued onward, striking Toxicroak directly. Toxicroak tried to run towards Cursola, but found out as a result that the Ice Beam froze its feet to the ground. "Now's your chance!" Keith grinned. "Indeed," Willa nodded. "All right, Cursola, blast it with Psychic!" she ordered. "Cuuuuurrrr..." Cursola began, his eyes glowing a bright blue. "...sooooLAAAAAAAAA!!!" he bellowed, sending a powerful wave of pure telekinetic force blowing over Toxicroak. This shattered the ice rooting Toxicroak's feet to the ground, but of course it also blasted the Toxic Mouth Pokémon backward. It landed on the path ahead and made no effort to get back up. Willa seized her chance immediately. With her free left hand, she brushed a few errant strands of hair out of her face, while with her right hand, she threw a yellow, black, and white sphere at the fallen Toxicroak. "Go, Ultra Ball!" she exclaimed. The ball struck Toxicroak, opening up and sucking it inside, before falling to the ground below and shaking back and forth. Keith and Willa watched intently as the ball wobbled where it stood, until finally came the low-pitched ping that confirmed it for them both- Willa had caught Toxicroak. Willa exhaled a sigh of relief as she strode forward and picked up the Ultra Ball. "Welcome to the team, Toxicroak," she murmured to the ball. "Way to go, dear," Keith smiled. "I was not expecting a Toxicroak! To say nothing of Corsola evolving!" he added with a chuckle. "Cuuuuursola~" smiled Cursola. As Willa walked back over, the Ghost-type hugged his Trainer with wispy coral branches, and though those who know much of Cursola might call this a bad idea, since Cursola's intention was not to immobilize Willa, so the branches did not immobilize her, even as she hugged him back. Same basic principle as with Ponyta's flames not burning the rider. But in any case, none of this was on any of their minds during the walk home- rather, Willa was quite eager to talk with Keith about his own experiences with his own Toxicroak, to give the Kalosian Ace Trainer some idea as to what to expect with training her own. OOC: Trading 3,000 to PippiTallsocks for her Toxicroak. Thanks! Moving the Toxicroak into an Ultra Ball, discarding his original Poké Ball in the process, and declaring his Ability to be Anticipation, since one had never been declared previously. *Trade Closed* Quote:
