06 was another good episode. Right now it's a close match up between season 4 and season 3. S4 is obviously better visually, and has had solid ass bits the whole way through, but there hasn't been a truly legendary scene yet. I haven't seen something that's even as funny as some minor gags from season 3, like Fujioka stealing the snacks from Kana (maybe I'm the only one who found that hilarious?). And of course let's not even talk about season 1. A little while ago I was skipping through some S1 episodes because I was looking for a particular scene, and I constantly came across these random skits that I barely remembered and was like, "Holy shit that's funny" (eg Chiaki becoming the Terminator and scanning peoples' idiot levels). Best scene in S4 so far is a tie between any number of things: Maybe Fujioka expressing unbridled joy after getting the 100 yen piece, or Fujioka going Kaiji mode when dropping the eraser.

Don't interpret this as me complaining about S4 because this show is still too good. I never want the episodes to end. Being funny isn't EVERYTHING, and there's been lots of cute and touching moments, like the whole Chiaki/Mako-chan development this episode, and the ending, which was sad with a humourous spin. The normally ornery Chiaki looking so emotionally vulnerable makes it all the more

Spoiler: show

Absolutely right. This was a nice statement from the author. We all expected him to be super stricken by this Kana, but no ... that's not the girl he loves!

(Every scene I've checked for so far has been in the manga. Though I haven't checked since like Episode 03 or 04, so I should look again.)
So my prediction that the scenes that appeared to be slight variations on past gags (Chiaki becoming a teru teru bozu again, most of the special) being inventions of the studio turned out to be false? Oopsie.

Minami-ke Tadaima Episode 07 was good, all-around cute fun. I can't narrow down the pictures this time to a reasonable number, so we'll have several galleries waiting inside. ^^; The 10/10 epic moment continues to elude us, but Episode 07 managed to deliver several solid "classic Minami-ke goodness" scenes.

Spoiler: show
Scene 1. Summer Sleepover

Touma is disappointed she didn't get to go to the beach with everyone, prompting Kana to throw a "beach party" for Touma here at the Minamis' apartment. This prompts Uchida to exclaim that she wants to throw a sleepover ... and so they do! But when summer heat prevents Uchida from falling asleep (and when Uchida's whining prevents Chiaki from returning to sleep), the group decide to tell ghost stories. So Chiaki goes to fetch Haruka ...

... since she's afraid of scary stories. Chiaki clings tight to Haruka (1,2) and Uchida begins to tell the tale of "the Dreadful Vacuum Cleaner". Here, we have yet more fanservice either from Studio Feel or else from the master himself: the married couple in Uchida's ghost story look and sound identical to Hosaka and Hayami. The scene is cute so far but nothing major, and it then reveals that it's been building up to this:

Because of Chiaki's heavy bodweight pushing down on Haruka's chest, Haruka felt an "oppressive force" in a nightmare she was having. She wakes up from her nightmare but in the process scares the living daylights out of Uchida, Kana, Yoshino, and Touma. Not a bad scene, if a bit of a long setup for such a simple punchline. But hey: we got to see sleepy Haruka, so it's all good.

Scene 2. Kana's Terrible Day

This scene was, for me, the weakest one of the episode. It wasn't bad, but it was kind of dull. The gag is that Kana quickly forgets her woes but that when she's then reminded of them by others (like Riko or Keiko) her mood changes drastically. The oppressive summer heat and a cavity in one of her teeth are the two major things which make her day miserable, and the scene caps off with her giving ice cream to Chiaki and Haruka that, under normal circumstances, she'd have been able to gorge on herself instead.

Scene 3. "Swatting Mosquitos"

When Chiaki observes Haruka-neesama slapping Kana across the face and blaming it on a mosquito (in all sincerity, though!), she decides to try it out for herself. Things escalate and pretty soon all the girls (save Haruka, who is in the kitchen) are slapping one another and blaming it on imaginary mosquitos. Then, when Kana tries to slap Chiaki, ... well, we have our first image gallery below.

Spoiler: show

Chiaki collides with Takeru-ojisan, who is sleeping on the floor of the Minamis' apartment, and ... I'm ... not really sure what the message here at the end was. ^^; If I'm not mistaken, we're just supposed to laugh that Takeru actually did get bitten by a mosquito? I'm not really sure. ^^;;

For me, the two best parts of this scene were 1) Uchida, Takeru, and money, a nice little throwback to that one time in Season 1 where she hesitated to answer when Kana asked her what she'd do if a stranger offered her $100, and 2) the part where Touma looks around for who to hit, sees Yoshino, and is like "There is no way I am slapping Yoshino." That was pretty awesome. But these were both what I'd call "small awesomes". They weren't all that memorable. And so ... on to the next scene!

Scene 4. Takeru treats the girls to sushi

This was a cute scene, and was probably my favorite of the entire episode. After Kana wags her enormous butt at Takeru (WTH was that!? I swear, someone on Studio Feel seriously has the hots for Kana!), and after Takeru reminds the girls for the umpteenth time that he is their cousin, not their uncle, Takeru agrees to take Chiaki and Kana out for lunch. He promises them sushi and is unfortunately waylaid by Uchida, Yoshino, and Touma as he escorts his nieces cousins to the sushi bar. Ever the generous host, loving uncle cousin, and exemplar of Japanese manliness , Takeru invites the others along as well, and so it's one man, four lolis, and a Kana all packed in to one sushi bar booth.

Chiaki explains that there are five types of plates: ¥100, ¥200, ¥300, ¥400, and ¥500. The more expensive the plate, the more expensive the sushi plated on it. Takeru then tells the girls, "You may each eat whatever you like but under one condition: please do not eat more than ¥1000 worth of food." At five girls and one Takeru-ojisan, the final bill should be ¥6000, or roughly $60. Yoshino leads the charge, snagging two plates of ootoro and being done right off the bat. (Young lady has fine tastes, apparently!) Uchida grabs egg-based sushi offerings, Touma grabs a mystery meat, and as for Chiaki, she seems to be stuffing herself despite Takeru's frequent warnings that she double-check her obviously incorrect math. And then the bill comes and ... it's ¥7000. Someone ate more than their fair share. In fact, if it was just one person, that someone ate $20 worth of sushi. Who could it be? Chiaki says it was none other than Fujioka! (1,2,3) And when Takeru calls her out on this obvious lie (1), Chiaki maintains her innocence and pretends to have Fujioka say "It was good!" (1). To me, this was a surprise. Last week's episode did this as well, so I guess we're 2 for 2 now, two solid examples in a row of Chiaki showing us that for all her braininess and gruff maturity at times she is still just a child, a 5th grader like any other, and occasionally she will do things like this as well.

Finally, when Takeru and the girls come home, Haruka comes home soon after. She's been grocery shopping, and she's ready to make lunch! That's when Takeru breaks the bad news to her and ... well, time for Gallery #2!

Spoiler: show

Oh my word. Haruka's radiant smile is enough to melt the entire ice shelf of Antarctica were it a man's heart. That. was. awesome if very, very short-lived. Also ... did Takeru just ask Haruka out on a date!? Not really, obviously, but L-O-L at what Hosaka might've thought if he'd been here for this conversation and/or if he'd spotted them at the sushi bar.

A bit of an exhaustive half-episode summary half-occasional thoughts post. If you managed to read it all, good for you! I'm glad! But if it was a bit too much to handle, the short conclusion follows:

Spoiler: show
I enjoyed the sleepover and the sushi bar scenes (1 and 4) best. The mosquito slap scene (3) was okay, and the Kana's bad day scene (2) was less okay but also still okay. No bad scenes, and two that were in particular pretty solid. It doesn't hurt that those two scenes (1 and 4) were also the two longest scenes of the episode.

It was good to see Takeru-ojisan again. I liked the funny little nod that he watches Sensei & Ninomiya-kun too. (And I liked the meta-nod that when the grown man is over, the episode that's airing is a particularly tawdry one with some harlot trying to make the moves on Sensei and steal him away from Ninomiya-kun!)

Still no Curry Song moment. But I'm not giving up hope just yet! We've still got five or six more episodes to go! And that's assuming this ends after twelve or thirteen episodes. Maybe we'll get insanely lucky and be told that we're in for a delightful 24-to-26-episode treat with Tadaima.

Someone on the staff clearly, clearly has a thing for Kana. ¬_¬

THAT SMILE. THAT SMILE OF HARUKA'S.

This episode was a big step down from last week's. Even the strongest bit wasn't as good as 06's weakest.

I do relate to Takeru, as I also have a problem where my cousin's daughters call me "uncle", followed up by me objecting, "HOLD IT! I'm your cousin!" and explaining what the definition of an uncle is. I'm not ready to be called uncle yet, I feel too old!

Yeah, that ass was pretty ridiculous! Even speaking as an ass man myself, it's just grotesque when it appears out of nowhere like that. They at least need to do what other anime have done correctly, which is to establish that a character has a big ass from day 1, and they can even add exposition later where you find out that it's fueled by her Pizza Hut addiction.

Re-reading an old post I made in the Fate/Zero thread, I just had the most awesome fanart crossover idea ever.
  • Haruka dressed up as Irisviel, wearing her white dress with golden trim
  • Chiaki dressed up as Ilya, wearing her purple ushanka and winter dress
  • Kana dressed up as ... you could go so many different ways with this. "I AM BOSS" Kana as War 4 Archer. "I AM BOSS" Kana as War 4 Rider. Energetic Kana as War 4 Berserker. Thin and agile Kana as War 4 Lancer.
This is why I need to learn how to draw! So I can make my many ideas into realities.

Haruka in Irisviel's clothes hugging or consoling Chiaki in Ilya's clothes would win multiple internets.

1m37s into Minami-ke Tadaima Ep08 and OH ... MY ... GOD. This is incredible. It's totally fan-pandering, yes, but if the rest of the episode is this level of awesome ... do I dare to hope? Do I dare to dream!?

... AWWW MAAAAN! XD ^^; I set myself up to be disappointed. More after the break.

Spoiler: show
On the one hand, this was a great episode with a lot of fan service. On the other hand, this was a terrible episode because of a lot of "jumped the shark"-caliber fanservice. ^^; *sigh*

The barbecue sketch was painful to watch. Why? Because it was awesome ... except it had Natsuki in Hosaka's place. >_< One, it hurts to know that Hosaka turned down this invitation (which he got from Natsuki) not knowing it was the very BBQ picnic with Haruka and "her daughters" that he had wanted. Two, it hurts to know that Natsuki got to cook for the Minamis but not Hosaka. Three, it sucks that Hosaka's specialness as "the Curry Fairy" was not only matched by but was eclipsed by Natsuki's new-found Chiaki aaaand Kana label of "the God of Fire". Four, it MEGA sucks that Haruka was playfully popping food into Natsuki's mouth. (THAT SHOULDA BEEN HOSAKA! >_<) And five, I didn't really like that neither girl recognized Natsuki, Kana calling him "that guy" at one point and Chiaki perfectly normal around him, and as though this were her very first time meeting him, no indication that she remembered the time he bark-roared at her and scared the ever-loving shit out of her. Aside from these grievances? This scene was awesome. But those are a hell of a lot of grievances! Serious ones!

(Also: what was up with Touma and Atsuko? Did I miss something? I don't remember those two ever even having met before.)

The second scene was entertaining but ... I didn't take it well. ^^; First off, I hate it when a show implies that my favorite character is easily susceptible to cheap hypnosis. And they did this not only to my Chiaki and to my Hosaka, but to my Haruka as well. What the hell. >_< Second, I don't like it when people are shown being under ridiculous hypnotic influence for an equally ridiculously long period of time. Third, I know Sakuraba Coharu meant well, but when we fans ask for another Curry Song moment, we don't literally mean you give us a second Curry Song! The grocery duet with Hosaka and Chiaki would've been amazing but for all the things that pulled it down. The lyrics (less good than the Curry Song's). The blatant pandering to us fans that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The fact that they even went so far as to partially re-animate and re-voice record the original Curry Song scene just shows you how shameless they were about this and how 100% deliberate they were in trying to please us fans by giving us near-exact replicas of our old favorite scenes. And last but not least, what killed this song (and this entire scene) for me was that it felt very out of character for Chiaki, hypnosis or no hypnosis, and the fact that it happened while she was under hypnosis, which all but invalidates it as she had no memory of it, etc.

I'm going to look later to see if these were in the manga or not.* Which reminds me ... Mcsweeney? You asked me if when I said that everything I'd checked had checked out in the manga did that mean too that the scenes that felt made for TV were also official? The answer is no -- or rather, the answer is that I didn't check those yet. I haven't read Vols 7 - 9. What Ive done instead is flipped through them real fast to find the chapters that match up with the anime and then I've read those. Sometimes this isn't true and I'll read a little more, but for the most part it's true and the reason I'm doing it is to minimize "spoilers" so that I can enjoy S4 and a possible S5 as freshly as you guys when they air. I want to be surprised each week by the colorful anime, not by the still-fairly-simple black-and-white manga.

For all my complaining though, I can't tell you how many times I've already re-listened to this song. And I absolutely LOVE Chiaki's dancing. It's just so, so much like a real child. A bit clunky. Simplistic. Pure. And then she does that flourish at around 1m20s into the song (around 19m12s in the UTW sub), where she spins around and it's just ... so beautiful. And then we cut to Hosaka ... and it's like, holy crap, who put LaPlace's Demon (Rozen Maiden) in my Minami-ke!? It's like, wow, he is totally channeling the feeling of that character. I just ...
  • wish the lyrics were better ^^;
  • wish the singing was better. Chiaki can't sing for shit ^^;; (never has been able to), and Hosaka wasn't on his A-game here either
  • wish the melody were a bit better, though it does have its moments
But seriously, I have re-listened to this song more times than I can count. Maybe the song really is hypnotizing ... ¬_¬;

* I did so. Edited this post to match the findings below.

Minami-ke Tadaima Manga-TV comparisons ~ listed by manga chapter

Flipping through the manga to see if Episode 08 was made for TV or not, here are some of the chapters I've found that we've seen. (Note: I'm just glancing out of the corner of my eye at a lot of these so that I don't get spoilered on chapters we've yet to see. If I type "---" it means that it looked new to me and I skipped past it as a result.)

Spoiler: show
Volume 7:
Chapter 123: putting away the kotatsu for the year
Chapter 124: Hosaka tries to give Natsuki a bentou; Hitomi seeks cooking advice from Haruka while Kana chimes in
Chapter 125: ---
Chapter 126: ---
Chapter 127: the one where Fujioka desperately tries to get Kana to invite him to lunch with her and Keiko but Kana mistakes him for being especially un-Fujioka-like and very Banchou-like
Chapter 128: the one where Chiaki makes Kana lunch and stuff, and then later they worry about the weight gain and try to work it off
Chapter 129: ---
Chapter 130: ---
Chapter 131: Uchida tries to make a schedule for summer break; Chiaki tells her about Kana's; Fujioka with the chinchiron-esque eraser scene
Chapter 132: fireworks with the Minamis; Fujioka and the coin Kana places in his hand
Chapter 133: Chiaki says too much at the beach, ruins the others' lunch, feels like shit because of this
Chapter 134: Bishoujo Kana and the interview; Fujioka declares he loves the usual Kana
Chapter 135: ---
Chapter 136: OMFG THERE IT IS, this chapter is where Hayami plants the BBQ idea in Hosaka's head, and then later Natsuki invites Hosaka to "a friend's BBQ" but he rebuffs him
Chapter 137: AND OMG, THERE'S THE BBQ! So ... I guess the blame here for trying too hard to impress us fans has to go to Sakuraba-sensei and not Studio Feel. ^^; Sensei, what've you done!? ;_; HOSAKA GOT SHAFTED! >_<
Chapter 138: ---
Chapter 139: ---
Chapter 140: where we met Miyuki; the scene where Kana's trying to trick Keiko into tutoring her
Chapter 141: ---

As for the glimpses I got out of the "---" chapters so you can decide for yourself whether I'm right or not that these chapters cover all-new scenes ...

Spoiler: show
Chapter 125: looks like it has to do with shampoo
Chapter 126: looks like it has to do with hardboiled eggs / how does one prep their eggs
Chapter 129: looks like it has to do with Touma wearing more feminine clothing
Chapter 130: another Good Chiaki Conscience & Bad Chiaki Conscience scene
Chapter 135: a Natsuki + Hitomi thing to do with movie tickets
Chapter 138: a Takeru-ojisan scene where he takes all three girls out for a meal
Chapter 139: a Mako-chan + Chiaki scene
Chapter 141: something having to do with sleep with the other Minami family

So we've covered 11 out of the 19 chapters in Volume 7. It was seeming to me like we'd done a lot more until I tallied them up.

Volume 8:
Chapter 142: ---
Chapter 143: the one where Kana gets a fortune and wonders if Fujioka might be who it's talking about
Chapter 144: the one where Yoshino troll-reveals that she knows Makoto is Mako-chan but does it so expertly that neither Makoto nor Uchida can be sure; the one with Makoto declaring he's done being Mako-chan; and then Haruka gives Mako-chan a hairclip
Chapter 145: ---
Chapter 146: the one with Good & Bad Conscience Chiaki where Chiaki suspects Kana and Uchida have played a trick on her
Chapter 147: the one where Haruka tells Natsuki she heard he likes to take long baths
Chapter 148: Touma and April Fool's Day
Chapter 149: ---
Chapter 150: ---
Chapter 151: ---
Chapter 152: the one where the four elementary school girls play-fight in the rain
Chapter 153: ---
Chapter 154: the discussion about how to fry one's eggs which leads to Hosaka tanning in the sun
Chapter 155: Riko and horoscopes
Chapter 156: the mosquito scene with Takeru-ojisan staying over
Chapter 157: Mako-chan's tan at the beach causes problems for Makoto; Mako-chan not showing Chiaki the backs of her hands
Chapter 158: Kana is fine until she remembers how it is and that she has a toothache
Chapter 159: ---
Bonus Chapter: the sleepover with the late-night telling of ghost stories

And again, the tiny details for the "---" chapters that I glimpsed ...

Spoiler: show
Chapter 142: looks like an Uchida + Kana-heavy scene having to do with a beach trip and/or how Uchida prefers her tempura/ramen/whatever
Chapter 145: an Atsuko-heavy chapter that has something to do with, perhaps, a preference between hot cocoa vs. coffee
Chapter 149: the elementary school nurse has allergies; some of the kids might too
Chapter 150: a Hosaka + Chiaki grocery store chapter :3 involving beans
Chapter 151: didn't look too closely; I saw that it ends with Chiaki being sick though, it seems
Chapter 153: no idea, something to do with Haruka and how she holds her cups, chopsticks, etc? Involves Kana and Touma. Not the one where they're trying to get her to spill juice all over herself.
Chapter 159: something to do with Hosaka, Haruka, and becoming a god

So, for Volume 8, it seems we've gotten through 12 of 19 chapters.

Finally, we have ...

Volume 9:
Chapter 160: the one where the elementary schoolers discuss masculinity, femininity, etc. Touma makes a Fujioka clone.
Chapter 161: Chiaki mistakes the Fujioka clone for her Fujioka
Chapter 162: the "What time is it?" check-your-watch-and-spill-your-drink prank; the loli maid costumes debut! :3
Chapter 163: Hitomi hangs out at Haruka's with Maki and Atsuko; the lost ring
Chapter 164: ---
Chapter 165: ---
Chapter 166: ---
Chapter 167: ---
Chapter 168: ---
Chapter 169: ---
Chapter 170: ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? XD ^^;;;;;; It's ... the hypnosis veggies tale from this week's episode. ^_^;;;; (SENSEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII! ;_; >_< WHY MUST YOU TRY TOO HARD!?)
Chapter 171: ---
Chapter 172: Takeru-ojisan treats Chiaki, Kana, and their friends to lunch at a sushi bar
Chapter 173: ---
Chapter 174: ---
Chapter 175: ---
Chapter 176: Kana, Touma, and Chiaki fight over a fourth donut
Chapter 177: ---
Chapter 178: ---

And as for what the "---" chapters entail ...

Spoiler: show
Chapter 164: I dunno, but the end involves Fujioka seeing something to do with Kana's childhood ... ;o
Chapter 165: absolutely no clue, but by the end of it, a lot of the girls are zonked out around the kotatsu
Chapter 166: no idea, but it involves Kana and Chiaki wrapped up in winter blankets and, I think, the power going out intermittently
Chapter 167: no idea, but it involves chocolates (Valentine's?) and the other Minami family
Chapter 168: a Hitomi + Natsuki chapter involving body temperature and cleavage?
Chapter 169: something to do with Girls' Day / Hina dolls and Chiaki crying
Chapter 171: the elementary school girls + Kana tell embarrassing stories / stories they don't want repeated to others?
Chapter 173: starts off with a juice box being kicked across the floor of the middle schoolers' classroom
Chapter 174: HOLY SHIT
Spoiler: show
YOSHINO COOKS AND SHE SEES HOSAKA AT THE GROCERY

Chapter 175: no clue, but a shirtless Fujioka chases after Touma at one point
Chapter 177: Touma gets advice from her family, applies it, and the main Minami family is all "Oh no ;_;" as Kana explains how/why Touma screwed it up according to them
Chapter 178: the girls struggle to open a jar of jam

So for Volume 9, it looks like we've covered 7 out of 19 chapters. Not bad. Plenty of material left.

In total, we have 27 chapters remaining out of 57 chapters we started off with between Betsubara (OAV 1) and Omatase (OAV 2). That's not bad, not bad at all. Furthermore, when Omatase came out, it came out alongside Volume 10 of the manga. So that's an additional 19 chapters (presumably), and while I have no idea how much or how little of it has been tapped so far, the 30 chapters that we have used proooooobably do correspond to the eight broadcast episodes of Tadaima so far. (That's around three to four manga chapters per episode. I can totally see that.)

Mcsweeney, as you go through the list of chapters I identified, do you spot any noticeable absences from Tadaima Eps 01-08? (See my post below.)

Last but certainly not least ... I'll have to re-examine my love/hate relationship with Episode 08. 'Cause like I said, I really did love certain aspects of it. It's just that ... ^^;;;;;; ... why must you shaft Hosaka so!? >_< And why must you have Chiaki, Hosaka, and Haruka fall prey to something so silly and bizarre?

Minami-ke Tadaima TV-Manga comparisons ~ listed by TV episode & scene

Above, I listed the manga chapters and told you what scenes they corresponded with in the TV series, indicating ones that hadn't shown up yet with a "---". In this post, I'll do the opposite: list all of the scenes in each episode in order, and tell you their corresponding manga chapters. Then, if there's a scene which didn't have a corresponding manga chapter, I'll indicate this with the words "made for TV". Keep in mind that anything labeled "made for TV" by me could be material from an earlier or later volume. I'm just looking through Volumes 7, 8, and 9 for now as those seem to be the chapters where most if not all of the material is coming from.

I should note: a lot of the scenes have been embellished in their transition from manga to TV. But that has always been the case with Minami-ke. So when I say a certain scene "is" a certain chapter, I'm not claiming that 100% of all frames in the TV scene correspond with 100% of cels in the manga. Just that the overall stories match up. And if I write "made for TV", then I'll explain what the scene was since my scene breakdowns may not be the same as yours. If it does match up with the manga though, then I'll just say so. Brevity!

Scene 3. Chapter 137
Scene 4. Chapter 170 (note: manga scene begins with Chiaki & Kana at the TV and ends with Chiaki & Hosaka's spell being broken, so if you want to call those bits "made for TV" scenes, you can)
ED. ending credits

There are some noticeable trends, although they don't hold up 100% of the time. The first is that the opening scene to each episode is a made-for-TV scene. In many cases, however, these scenes are merely embellishments on scenes which will show up later in the episode and which do come from the manga. The second trend that I noticed is, for at least the first four episodes, the closing scene also seems to have been made-for-TV material. And even later on, some episodes' final scenes have manga-faithful bodies but made-for-TV closing moments, like the final bits of Episode 08 and like the embellishments given to the ending of Episode 05. (The phone call is much, much shorter in the manga and Akira doesn't scold Fujioka at all.)

Looks like all of my predictions were correct, even Hosaka building the plate, which I second guessed myself on and thought may have been in the manga. I also assume that the entire pre-season OVA was made for TV (it was obvious).

Now for my episode 08 thoughts:

Spoiler: show
Good episode, but it had LOTS of wasted potential! I thought the barbecue story was building up to something big. When Chiaki said that the barbecue was still missing something, I thought that would be Hosaka's cue to enter (he decided to come after all), cue Chiaki elation at seeing the legendary Curry Fairy, and he shows himself to be the TRUE God of Fire! Damn it, he was even singing the Barbecue Song throughout the whole sequence, the stage was set perfectly for him to make a grand entrance. Instead, we just got to see him shafted yet again. Coharu is a genius, but he's displayed a disturbing insistence on preserving the status quo. I forecast more Hosaka screwjobs and Fujioka near misses in the future.

The vegetable hypnosis bit was funny. No complaints on my end, other than the Curry Song rehash. If they're going to pander, they should at least bring back the old guy who gets shocked at Hosaka's antics. "T-T-THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!" Maybe they're saving him for the season finale, after the greatest Hosaka scene of them all!

OHHH, Hosaka finally got to meet Hitomi! I was waiting for that to happen. Unfortunately, they were too out of it to have any meaningful interaction.

Quote:
(Also: what was up with Touma and Atsuko? Did I miss something? I don't remember those two ever even having met before.)
I think there was an incident where Touma fell into Atsuko's breasts, and she wasn't quite sure what to make of it since she didn't know if it was a boy or a girl.

... A giiirl?

Your vision for how the first half of Episode 08 could have gone makes me all kinds of "T_T" that it didn't.

Spoiler: show
While that might've shafted Natsuki a bit (too bad ^^; ), your idea would have been grand. Perhaps Natsuki would've remained the kami of fire but Hosaka would've been the ookami of fire! ;o Or the Bodhisattva of fire!

The problem with your theory, of course, is as you've said: Sakuraba seems to be quite intent on staying in the comfort zone of not making big changes to any of the character dynamics. The one thing that gives me hope is that this isn't entirely true -- Season 3 did introduce some manga-canon new characters like the elementary school nurse and Hitomi, and Season 3 also advanced some manga-canon developments for Natsuki (going over to the Minamis), Hosaka (running into Chiaki), and so on. But like ... yeah, Season 4 seems to have shown a remarkable, remarkable conservatism. It seems like most everything that has happened and has been "big" has either been redos of past greatness (like S4E08's Vegetable Song as a clear homage to S3E02's Curry Song) or else has been stuff that doesn't really alter any two characters' interpersonal development. So like ... for an example of that, consider Yoshino dropping that major hint in S4E02 that she knows all about Makoto being Mako-chan. That was advancement of that plotline, sure, ........... but when we came out of it, Makoto was still right where he was before (suspects Yoshino knows but can't be certain), so was Uchida (same), and so was Yoshino (very probably knows but is expertly trolling).

There's actually a really clear example of this in Volume 06 of the manga. I'll put it in its own spoiler box below.

Spoiler: show
In Chapter 118, one of the ones that didn't make it into the anime (who knows why), Yoshino comes over to the Minamis' while Haruka, Kana, and Mako-chan are there. (Chiaki is out shopping.) Makoto leans over to Kana and asks her whether she thinks Yoshino has figured out the whole Makoto/Mako-chan thing or not. Kana thinks it over and answers that while it's possible since, unlike Uchida, Yoshino is quite the clever girl, Makoto needn't worry even if that's the case since Yoshino won't go blabbing to Haruka or Chiaki. Makoto asks if that's even possible but Kana answers that it is and explains to him her theory on Yoshino. Simply put, Yoshino is a huge sadist. Makoto asks if that's even possible, but Kana quips "At least in my heart it is." But she asks him: why would Yoshino, if a sadist, rat out Makoto and lose a huge source of enjoyment? Wouldn't she derive more pleasure watching this trainwreck unfold? Then Kana says, "Well ... this is only if she's figured out your true identity ..."

On those words though, Kana leaves a most uneasy Makoto. He looks over at Yoshino and thinks to himself, "Even if you say that ... now I can't see Yoshino as anything other than a huge sadist." She sweetly smiles at Makoto and he does a ^_^; face back, very uneasy and unsure of whether she's putting on a facade or not. Yoshino then says to the people gather 'round the kotatsu, "Today at school, they told us to not forget to bring something to school tomorrow. But ... what was it again?" She turns to Mako-chan, inviting him to answer. Makoto is caught by surprise but manages to tell her, "I'm a middle schooler so I don't know." Yoshino laughs and apologizes to Mako-chan, telling her that Mako-chan gives off a mysterious and "someone in the same class as me"-like feeling. Makoto deflates and feels the jig is up, asking Kana her thoughts. But Kana advises Makoto against coming out with the truth just yet: after all, she tells him, maybe you really do give off the air of someone who is in the same class as the perceiver!

Haruka then punctuates the room with a question to Kana about prepping the bath for tonight. When Kana says she's still not done it, Haruka nudges her to go and do it now. Kana is like, "B-but Mako-chan ^^; ..." and Yoshino brightly smiles and says "It's okay! We'll be here with her!" Kana's like, "Th-that's true ^^;;; ..." and heads off, whispering to Makoto an apologetic "Good luck!" Makoto leaps from the kotatsu and shouts "I'LL READY THE BATH!" He then calmly says the Minamis are always treating him so hospitably so it's the least he can do. He leaves the room, leaving behind Haruka, Kana, and Yoshino. In the bathroom, he collapses over the edge of the tub. "Well, at least I'm finally alone ..."

"Mako-chan?" Yoshino has followed him into the bathroom. XD "I'll help you! I mean, I'm always benefitting from the Minamis' hospitality too!" Yoshino says that Mako-chan's skirt'll get wet and so she offers to be the one to scrub the tub instead. Makoto protests and wrestles with her over the scrubbing stone. The two topple into the tub, making a loud noise and drawing Haruka's attention. She investigates and sees Mako-chan on top of Yoshino in the tub. Yoshino says, "Mako-chan sure is strong! Almost like ... a man!"

We cut back to the kotatsu, where Mako-chan is with her head faceplanted on the kotatsu. Kana asks, "What the heck happened in the bathroom?" Makoto then stands up from the kotatsu and says "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!" He turns to Yoshino and says, "Yoshino. You already know, right? So please, just spit it out clearly." Yoshino says, "Yes, I know." And then ... "Don't forget to bring your protractor to school tomorrow, right?" To which Makoto replies, "Eh? No, like I said, I'm a middle schooler ..."

End chapter.

The point is, this chapter is a lot of fun ... but it also illustrates that Sakuraba-sensei is really quite uncomfortable with doing more than teasing advancements whilst maintaining the status quo in perpetuity.

I accidentally started summarizing another of the chapters that didn't make the cut into the anime (and again, who knows why), so since I already wrote up most of it, I'll go ahead and include it here for your reading pleasure:

Spoiler: show
In Chapter 114, Makoto is complaining to Kana and Uchida about his lack of a bust as Mako-chan. (Maki teases Mako-chan over it, and this bugs Makoto.) Kana suggests he wear a bra but Makoto is against this and wants to know if there's some way he can make his bust appear larger without wearing a bra. (Kana quips that in a certain sense that is the dream of every woman in the world. ) Chiaki overhears their conversation, which worries Makoto that he's been found out. But he hasn't been: Chiaki only overheard that Mako-chan is worried about her flat chest and wants a way to seem bigger that doesn't involve bra pads. So Chiaki goes and fetches a dress which she lends to Mako-chan. Sure enough, the fabric of the breasts region on this dress slightly pokes out, giving an illusion of maybe A-cup breasts on a flat-as-a-board flatchested person. Chiaki explains that this dress used to belong to Haruka-neesama but that she'll happily lend it to Mako-chan. (+1 evidence of how dear Mako-chan is to Chiaki.) Chiaki also theorizes that if Mako-chan wears this dress enough, she will naturally fill out, her body attempting to fill in the gaps left by the fabric. Makoto worries about this actually happening and protests to Chiaki, "I mustn't turn out like Haruka!" This offends Chiaki, who feels like Makoto not only has insulted Haruka but has rejected Chiaki's kindness. She gives chase after Mako-chan, and Makoto, trying to escape, ....... runs into the bedroom where he finds Maki and Haruka. Haruka is quite undressed, clothed only in underwear and bra, and is in the process of removing her bra when this happens. It turns out that Haruka had invited Maki over to measure her chest properly because she's having trouble finding a bra that fits well. Meanwhile, back in the living room we have a blushing Makoto zonked out over the kotatsu, Kana asking him just where the heck he was looking. (This is also how the chapter opened, with an anecdote unrelated to the main story that I cut out; said anecdote ended with Makoto disagreeing with a conclusion Kana reached about cup size and a person's ego correlating [i.e. the larger the bust, the larger the ego] and he offered up Haruka as an example, prompting Kana to ask him just where he's been looking.)

Whoa! Are you sure that first one didn't happen in the anime? It sounds familiar to me, especially the part about Mako-chan having some kind of incident in the bathroom, and a girl remarking that she's strong ... like a man. Maybe I'm mish-mashing unrelated things in my head?

What's more, I can confirm with certainty that Chiaki offering to lend Mako-chan Haruka's dress did happen.

Then my memory may be rusty! :o For I definitely do not remember either of those two scenes happening in the anime. (Though kudos to Asread for exercising good sense if they did!) Do you have an episode for the latter one? (And, if you located the former as well, the former one?)

Not sure about the bathtub incident, but Mako-chan walking in on Haruka having her bra size measured happened in season 3 episode 07.

I knew I should've rewatched Season 3 all the way before starting Season 4! But ... I've seen it like three or four times. So I'm surprised I managed to forget it. And isn't S3E07 the Season 3 beach episode? Maybe I forgot the Mako-chan scene just because it was outshone by other scenes. No idea ...

Now I'll have to see if I can find the Yoshino scene too.

Still ... the scene I'm most excited to see animated is one I know hasn't been touched yet.

Oh jeez! It happened in Betsubara. You see, this is why I was surprised that you gave it a "meh" review. That and Kana accidentally giving Fujioka Valentine's Day chocolates were solid bits!

Another thing that made me remember that scene was Yoshino's creepy laugh, because it sounded like Walpurgis Night.

Oh man, now I will have to go and rewatch Betsubara right away! I've only ever seen it two times I think. It's definitely the thing I've watched the fewest amount of times (not counting Omatase, which I've watched 1½ times or two times, not sure).

Now you're making me wonder if every single chapter I feel got skipped by the anime did in fact show up and my memory is going to very bad places. ^^; So let me ask you this: was there ever a scene where the girls took turns opening cans of soda and at the very end Chiaki comes home, opens one, it explodes in her face, and Kana blames it on "the witch" (Atsuko) and Chiaki goes "Who are you calling a witch?" (This is Chapter 50 of the manga, from Volume 3.)

EDIT: I just started up Betsubara and saw this scene referenced a TON during the opening montage. So clearly this was shown in Season 3. -.-; ^^; I think we've established that my memory for Season 3 is apparently quite bad!

Here's another one which, tbh, does VAGUELY sound familiar but I can't visually remember it happening in the anime. Chapter 53. Hayami comes over with her "fruit juice" again, and Chiaki goes to her and asks for help. Spring is bringing out the full idiocy of the idiots, she complains (referencing Maki, Kana, and Uchida who are all laughing loudly around the table). Hayami goes "Hmmmm?" and suggests, "Why not join 'em?" Chiaki is averse to the idea but Hayami encourages her, hands her a "fruit juice", and soon after Chiaki is drunk. Kana complains to Hayami, asking her just what she's done to Chiaki and noting that Chiaki is so foregone right now that surely she'll still be this way when Haruka gets home, and that'll mean trouble. Uchida is confused (this is her first exposure to the casualties of Hayami's "fruit juice") and asks what is going on. Kana explains that Chiaki sometimes gets like this whenever Hayami pays a visit. Chiaki, having previously drunkenly glomped Uchida, crawls out of Kana's hold and returns to Uchida, demanding to know her first name. "I-It's Yuka! Uchida Yuka!" Kana is seriously worried about Haruka coming home and finding Chiaki like this, so Hayami suggests tying Chiaki's hair up in pigtails like Kana's. "If you see her like this from behind, no one will know it's her!" Uchida and Hayami tug a bit on Chiaki's pigtails, Chiaki gets angry at Uchida only, she gives chase, grabs at her panties, the two topple over, Chiaki slams her head against the coffee table ... and passes out. ^^;; Kana powwows with Hayami and suggests they return Chiaki's hair to its original state since, by the time she wakes up, she should be back to normal given past precedent. When Uchida worries that Chiaki will still be angry with her after waking up, Kana brushes aside Uchida's worries and reassures her that Chiaki will have forgotten everything after waking up. ^^; Sure enough, she's right: the scene hilariously ends when, the next day at school, Chiaki greets Uchida in the morning with a question: "Who's Yuka?" Chiaki explains that she has a vague recollection of someone named Yuka having tugged on her hair and forced her to eat green peppers. (Uchida internally monologues "The green peppers bit didn't even happen! T_T") Chiaki walks off after a silent pause, her question unanswered by Uchida, and she begins to wonder whether it was a Yuka or whether it was someone named Rika instead.

I sincerely don't remember these happening in the anime, so if they both did, ... I'm not sure whether to be happy I got to re-experience these stories as if they were fresh or terrified that my memory is going to Hell for a show I so dearly love. ;_; The bit about Chiaki demanding to know Uchida's first name sounds VERY familiar, but I don't remember Hayami ever paying a visit to the Minamis and getting just Chiaki drunk, and Kana flipping out about Haruka finding her like this.

EDIT: So, I'm watching Betsubara right now and ... OMG at all of the bits that I've seen in the manga recently and assumed never made it into the series proper! XD So so many of them! Like ...
  • Chiaki goes to the supermarket again, wonders if she can pretend the carrots Haruka asked her to purchase were sold out, and runs into Hosaka for the second time. This truly is their second run-in in the manga, but I could've SWORN that it didn't happen in the anime and that the second thing we ever saw with them in the anime was Season 4's "Let's Oyasai~!" bit. AND HOLY SHIT, CHIAKI EATS HER CARROTS BECAUSE OF THE CURRY FAIRY! \o/ FUCK YEAH HOSAKA!
  • Next up is the scene with Yoshino and Mako-chan, sure enough. 「かもしれない」 is its title. The words Kana says are almost lifted verbatim straight from the manga, but Ayako's mangled things like 私の中だけのね. It's lit. "only inside me" and so "if only in my head/heart", but they made it "Well, just me" which would have been 私だけのね. And like, the next few lines are pretty roughly translated too. It's not "it wouldn't be funny anymore," it's "she'd lose her source of entertainment" (lit. "the fun would end/vanish"). Yeah, they mangled quite a few more lines too. And oh wow, they practically rewrote Yoshino's line where she says "Sorry, sorry, Mako-chan! You just give off this mysterious and classmate-like air!" to "Oh sorry. I thought you were in the same grade as me." ^^;;;; (That's a pretty shameless rewrite. ^^;;;;; ) I don't know why, either, because they nail some technically harder portions (both in terms of vocabulary and grammar). Which suggests to me that rather than lack of fluency, it's just lack of a good knack for translating things from one language to another. That's really half of the game: half is knowing the source language and the target language, but the other half is having that appreciation for "the perfect translation". Oh well, can't be helped. The scene is definitely here though. Wow. Betsubara definitely did clean-up duty for the poor chapters that got skipped. ... just finished the scene. Man, this is such a good one. TBH though, I think its delivery is much better in the manga. The way the cels separate the text in the manga invited (at least in my own head) a much more dramatic, less rushed reading for the climax in the bathroom.
  • Valentine's Day #2 is the third sketch, and the first one I haven't forgotten. *sigh of relief* Scratch that. I've completely forgotten this sketch too. T_T "Maki-sensei" giving the elementary school girls + Kana advice regarding Valentine's Day. Yeah, totally don't remember this. I do remember seeing portions of it in the manga though as I flipped through real fast. Good lord though is the animation terrible here. ^^; XFD @ the ending though. Love seeing Haruka freak out like that along with the rest of 'em. Poor Fujioka left standing out there in the cold for so long though. ^^;
  • Valentine's Day #2 part II is the fourth sketch. I've ... forgotten all of this. ;_; Aha! The veeeeeeeeeery end of it I remember! ^^; Where Kana gives Fujioka chocolate to boost his energy, not realizing it's Valentine's Day.
And that's it. Four scenes, pretty much all of which I had forgotten about.

Decided to finish my nth rewatch of Season 3. Decided to spoil myself by beginning with S3E02 even though I saw it in 2012. (I think I left off last after Ep04 or Ep05?) This episode is amazing. The opening scene with Fujioka and the chocolates is a bit weak, but the three scenes after that are all classics! First is the debut of Chiaki's good and bad consciences. Next up is the amazing scene where Hosaka tries to befriend Maki, Atsuko, and even Hayami (the shogi pieces scene). And then capping it off of course is the Curry Song. Now I knew that one was there, but I had forgotten what great company the Curry Song kept! What a solid episode!

And rewatching the Curry Song scene, oh, how awesome this is. I'll never forget how much I flipped out that
Spoiler: show
Hosaka and Chiaki crossed paths like this

the first time I saw it. So memorable, so amazing.

I don't recall that scene. I think I would have remembered Chiaki's hair being messed with, but I'm not 100%. Don't feel too bad about your memory, because my only having seen the anime (for the most part) means I have an advantage over you. I only need to remember if I've seen something once, you have to remember if you've seen it twice.

WHAT!! Are you insane! That's one of my favourite bits of the whole season! I found it hilarious how Fujioka tried to playfully steal the chocolates away from Kana, but just ended up scaring her and she shoved them in his face and was like, "HERE JUST TAKE THEM!" it's one of those classic cases of people fantasizing about how something will play out in their head, but it never turns out the way they want and ends up completely backfiring. in fact I wrote it in as #3 in my top 5 favourite moments of season 3 list in my post-season review.

I flipped out pretty hard myself as I'm sure you remember. He needs to cross paths with Kana next, and then he can finally move on to the final boss, Haruka.

The climax of the scene, I agree, is great. The tone of her voice is just perfect as she's like "Fine, here, take 'em O_o;" and the scene does well illustrate what you said it does. But I just feel like the lead-in to the punch is a fair bit too long and not very funny, and the punch itself isn't on par with either the shogi friends scene's multiple punches or the Curry Song scene. As for Good and Bad Conscience Chiaki, it's a personal favorite. The "my heart is THIS big!" bit is cute but not as funny as the "Here, take them! O_o" scene with Fujioka, but the material which leads the way ... sexy Bad Conscience Chiaki for one, the part where she scares Good Conscience Chiaki with the possibility that the original memo was for a green or yellow vegetable for another, ... I just enjoy the scene. Basically, I'd say this: Curry Song > shogi friends > G&B Conscience Chiaki > Fujioka assertively demands chocolate. And I'm guessing you largely agree: you just swap the positions of those last two. No? Do you really place the chocolate scene ahead of either the Curry Song or the Hosaka friend-making scenes?

Rewatched S3E03. 100% positive I just recently (2012) saw this one too, but re-enjoyed it all the same. The scene with Uchida and the apples is definitely my favorite in this one. Poor Uchida is confused as to why the normally polite Minamis are so unenthused about her generous gift to them, and then ... she looks in the box. XD A great application of a classic horror story formula to something as mundane as in-season fruit. Uchida is also one of my favorite supporting characters in the series, so there's that.

Curry song is #1, OBVIOUSLY. I still thought Fujioka stealing the chocolates was the second best thing in the episode though. Another thing that made it amusing was him marveling at how Touma was a natural at play fighting with girls, due to the whole gender confusion. Hosaka friend making was good, and something that was sorely needed after he did nothing all of season 2, but inferior to pretty much everything he did in season 1.

I also loved the described apple scene. That came in at #5 in my top 5 list.

Some other things of (re)note.

First, the animation. It's hard to believe I ever thought this (Season 3's animation) was good: that's how badly Season 4's spoiled me. I can't even fathom how, when I watched Omatase, I was unsure as to whether I liked the new animation more or not. It's light years ahead of Asread's work, both in character design and in technical execution. And while I still love Daume's designs (always will), even they are being challenged by the manga-faithful, incredibly sharp and colorful character animation of Season 4.

Second, the high school. I didn't even notice this at first, so natural and "right at home"y did it feel to me, but Studio Feel has returned us to proper desks in Haruka's school instead of the bizarro college lecture hall-style bench-desks that Asread concocted for Season 2 and retained in Season 3. Never did care for those. In fact, I remember being quite confused by them at first, believing they indicated that Haruka had gone on to college. "But wait a second," I thought, "wasn't Haruka only a junior? And isn't it a bit of a coincidence that Maki and Atsuko are there with her too? " It became pretty clear that, despite the college lecture hall feel of the classroom, this was still supposed to be Haruka's high school once I saw Hayami and Hosaka there as well. But yeah. Kudos to Studio Feel for scrapping Asread's dumb design idea and returning us to real high school desks.

I still can't believe Hitomi only shows up in just that one episode. I mean, I recognize it to be a fact, but I just can't believe it. Feels like we had her around for quite a few sketches before Tadaima. APPARENTLY NOT! That's one thing I sure am grateful to Tadaima for. Hitomi is so cute, inside and out, so it's great to have her around more. Looks like we'll be getting to see yet more of her in this weekend's episode.

The thing that surprised me: It wasn't until you started talking about season 3 again that I learned the Curry Song happened so early on. I knew we indeed got the Hosaka making friends scene early, a good solid gag that was a sort of apology for Hosaka's lack of presence in season 2, but could have sworn it wasn't until much later that they pulled out the big guns and gave us the Curry Song. In fact I thought it happened near the end, as a sort of climax to the show. But no, those two bits were back to back! wtf.

One of the reasons why I wouldn't have minded if Hosaka showed up Natsuki at the barbeque: Why does there seem to be this running gag where Natsuki always turns down Hosaka and makes up some kind of excuse every time he offers him food? It happened this season when he offered to cook food for his family, and dates all the way back to season 1 when the two had this funny exchange:

Hosaka: I want you to taste this lunch before I give it to the woman I love.
Natsuki: I see. Sorry, I just ate my lunch and I'm too full.
Hosaka: Isn't this your lunch here?
Natuski: This is being saved for later. [starts unwrapping it]
Hosaka: You shouldn't open things you're saving for later.
Natsuki: That's true. [starts eating]
Hosaka: You shouldn't eat it either.
Natuski: That's true.

What is he, some kinda JERK?! Is he weirded out by Hosaka and doesn't want to eat his food because he doesn't know where it's been? Maybe it's weird and a little gay for a guy to accept a wrapped food box from another guy? Or does he know about Hosaka's infatuation with Haruka and sees him as some sort of rival? In other words, it would help him out a lot to accept Hosaka's meal box to feed his family, but he can't because all he can think about is, "SHINDOU HIKARU!!!!!" He's never done an internal monologue expressing these kinds of feelings, and he sure doesn't look angry when he's turning him down. He just kind of sits there with a dumb look on his face, so who knows what's going on in that guy's head.

We need to borrow Hitomi to get to the bottom of this ...

I wanted to write up a nice big post for this episode but I've put it off for several days so I should just go ahead and say: I really quite enjoyed Episode 9. Probably my favorite of the season thus far.

Spoiler: show
I was worried at first when Coharu paired Fujioka off with Hitomi, or at least seemed to be pairing him off with her, but I was quite relieved when the episode soon established that this was just a cute "wow, you two are so alike" gag and that, in the end, they became friends but entertained no romantic or sexual attraction for one another.

I really enjoyed the chain the tickets went through, passing from Takeru to Haruka (with Haruka briefly misunderstanding Ojisan's intentions), then from Haruka to Natsuki (who mistook her intentions), then from Natsuki to Hitomi (who mistook his intentions), and then finally Hitomi arrives at the Minamis with the tickets. I also quite liked how Kana and Chiaki were perceptive enough to deduce why Natsuki had gotten the tickets and why he'd given both to Hitomi yet how they failed to realize that Haruka was the mystery girl who gave Natsuki the tickets. It's just too bad that Coharu-sensei then had to play a mean trick on us and have Haruka enter the room yet not reveal that she'd given two tickets just like those to Natsuki. Would've advanced the whole Haruka-Natsuki-Hitomi plot along considerably!

I really loved, and was quite pleasantly surprised by, how the entire episode all had to do with one story. It's been a long time since we've had an episode do that. I wouldn't want it to happen all the time, but it was refreshing to depart from the formula we've largely stuck to so far in Season 4.

I haven't rewatched it yet but I'm looking forward to doing so.

"I want him to straight up say he loves me ... and hold me tight~♥"

Oh god, this amount of cute should be illegal! I've decided that you can have Haruka, Hitomi is my new waifu. My only complaint is that her hair looks stupid from the back! But that's okay, because her voice might be the most pleasant sound I've ever heard.

Takeru is obviously an uncle-like figure to Kana and Chiaki, but she has a strange and interesting relationship with Haruka that I would like to see explored further.

Episode 10 was alright. None of the sketches were especially memorable, but they weren't terrible either.

Spoiler: show
The scene where Takeru takes the girls out for dinner was okay. Shame on them for taking advantage of him like that though. ^^;

The pajama party scene was pretty much just there for Haruka fanservice. I wish it'd been cleverer. Didn't like that Chiaki got violent with Mako-chan though. Felt very out of character for her given all the build-up that we've seen towards establishing that Mako-chan ranks right up there with Fujioka in terms of people Chiaki respects. Her punch reduces Mako-chan to Uchida level in respect now. Very strange.

The Chiaki's sick scene was okay. Seemed to be there just for two things. 1, Makoto and Uchida clumsily dodging Yoshino's questions. 2, Touma proving that Makoto's a wuss.

The best moment for me all episode was probably near the beginning, where Haruka "corrected" first Mako-chan and later Kana as to why the Minamis were conserving electricity.

Kind of surprised that they have to pay their own utility bills. I figured the government would take care of that. I guess not.

I have never heard of blowing on a ball point pen fixing it. Was surprised to see Coharu write it actually working.

lol @ Keiko inside the blanket with Kana. And then Chiaki tries the same on Mako-chan ...

Mako-chan's outfit in that last scene was pretty stylish. lol

The sneak peek for next week's episode looks like it might be portending an epic scene. Or it might not. ^^; Only time will tell.

Spoiler: show
A statue of the Virgin Mary bears a striking resemblance to Minami Haruka? Oh pleaaaaase tell me this is plot relevant!
