Cake vs. Pie
Spurred on by a discussion with Morgoth. Where do you fall, UPNer, in the eternal battle between cake and pie!? Vote now! Vote for the dessert you think superior!

How is this even a question? Cake wins every time! Then again, I'm British and we don't really do much in the way of dessert pies.

That stated I know there are people in this world who prefer pie to cake so it's not like the question's as stupid as "Would you rather exit a spacecraft without a spacesuit or would you rather eat a grilled cheese sandwich?" or some such.

What if you're lactose intolerant? The amount of time you suffer is much less if you exit the craft than if you eat the sammich.

Fair enough :p. As a Brit, I just find the idea of dessert pies a bit weird - I guess apple pie is fine (although apple crumble is far more common and superior), but primarily pie brings to mind things like "steak and kidney", "pork" or "chicken and mushroom". My post was primarily hyperbole bought on by my massive pro-cake bias though :p

The thing is, I love pumpkin pie filling ... but I loath pumpkin pie crust. It's so dry and bland and BLEGH. Whenever I get pumpkin pie I always strategically eat the crust first (going for the ridge in the back first, then eating the crust on the bottom of the slice separately from filling whenever I shave off bit by bit of the slice I've been served) because I want to savor the taste of that awesome, delicious pie filling and not the abominable crust.
That's kind of the problem with all pies imo: the crust. Apple pie filling's fine but blegh to the crust. Blueberry pie's okay if you're in the mood for all that gelatinous syrup but again the pie crust arrives to ruin the day. Even cheesecake (which is an odd beast who is half-pie half-cake) has the world's greatest filling but those terrible, terrible bread crumbs of a crust on the bottom. Cake has no such problems. Cake is all delicious. In fact, here's the breakdown for me: cake: has a tasty body, has an insanely tasty trim (the icing) pie: has a tasty body, has a blegh trim (the pie crust) If it were purely pie filling vs. cake breading, pie might actually stand a shot at winning. (Especially if we were to lump cheesecake in with the pies rather than the cakes given the nature of its preparation and serving.) But the fact is that the pie crust is part of what makes a pie a pie. And the cake icing is part of what makes a cake a cake. So cake wins, hands down.

Well I love fruit and cake icing can get disgusting if there's too much, so pie gets the upper hand with me. There's no such thing as too much pie filling.

I want to try exiting an airlock w/o a spacesuit actually, so long as I can get back in quickly. I hear your skin stretches out, but I don't plan to be out long enough for my blood to boil. Also, exhale, never inhale, or your lungs pop. (ouch! >.<)
Anyway, cake or pie... That is quite the quandary. Certain cake frostings are disgusting, but cheesecake is divine. Pie crust isn't very tasty (I'm with talon, can't stand Pumpkin pie crust), but pie filling is delicious. Why not get the best of both worlds? Triffle! |

>Talon's point on pie crust
Cheesecake "crust" is one of the only ones I can stand, so I generally prefer cake. UPN: Let them eat cake. EDIT: Quote:

In general, pie is better than cake, but cheesecake is better than most pies.
If this poll had brownies, those would win hands down. |

Don't even accept her Point #2 'cause it's fuckin' ridiculous to argue "uneven icing is worse than no icing at all." Icing-hating freaks like Yuki and Tdos don't count. ;P Point #3 she is right. Point #4 is sigh. -_-; Point #5 is laughably wrong for my family with Christmas cake and a Halloween birthday completely throwing that one off. Point #6 I don't understand. They're both incredibly rich in sugar. Sorry, Allie and fans of Allie but the Brosh is wrong on this one.

What kind of crust do you guys use? Graham cracker crust is awesome. Apple pie crust is shit.
I like pies more because I consider cheesecake more of a pie than a cake, and pumpkin pie. Though I hate fruit pies. Cakes tend to be too rich for me, like eating a lot of pancakes at once. Icing is amazing though.
