I'm not sure why you switched in Metagross to the scarfed Escavalier?

I started to play again. Mono water.
I need a switch in for Tapu Lele. Like in Ubers, there's no way for me to soak up Moonblast outside of Tentacruel/Toxapex, and Lele carries Thunderbolt for them. Psychic, Moonblast, and Thunderbolt, especially on specs Lele, destroys me. Here's a replay of the team in action: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-961106375 I'm running a defensive, Sap Sipper Weakness Policy Azumarill to handle Grass-type moves. She's worked very well so far, especially against former nemesis Breloom.

I almost suggested Quagsire but then I remembered Lele gets Energy Ball.

There's no real way to handle special attackers or scarfers with electric-type moves. I see a potential scarf Magnezone and I have no switches. The only Pokemon that feel core are Swampert and Azumarill because of their resistances.
Defensive Swampert seems to work well but I'm not sure of his moves. It feels like 4MSS since with Torrent + Hydro Pump, he actually hits harder than the Mega version: Quote:
Unlike my Ubers team, Grass isn't as big a problem as electric here. With two x4 weak Pokemon and only one immune, Electric is a lot harder to sponge than Grass.

There just simply isn't a good answer in mono-Water for Tapu Lele.

I may have found one in Kingdra. With Swift Swim, he is neutral to both electric and grass and with Dragon Dance and still be offensive outside of rain. I have it spec'd to outspeed scarf base 95.
That said, there is an obscure set on RU that is interesting: Focus Energy + Scope Lens for spammable Draco Meteors and Hydro Pumps. It looks promising, since it 2HKOs Toxapex and cannot be removed with Haze.

Kingdra is...bad in OU. That set isn't strong enough to work efficiently. It's not a new set.

Yeah, it doesn't work. Kingdra can't switch in to Tapu Bulu or Kartana at all. Palkia is pretty underwhelming too and I would need that kind of bulk to be able to handle the brutal grass onslaught.
Sap Sipper was absolutely the way to go but without Huge Power, even in the rain, there's almost nothing Azumarill can do offensively. Toxapex-level offensive stats and moves, but without Pex's ability to recover since the AV is necessary to handle electric attacks. There was an interesting option in Seismic Toss, but like with Quagsire it's a lame FRLG tutor move, so it isn't compatible with HA. Only until a VC release of FRLG will I be able to use that combo, which at least gives Azumarill something. Dynamax will help Gyarados out a lot.

TIL: I love it when Mega Swampert gets badly poisoned
Switching in to Toxic was annoying in Ubers, but it's great here because Mega Swampert doesn't get burned. Some stuff I learned in OU last time, that I forgot: -U-Turn is quite useless on Pelipper because it can't be allowed to die. While Pokemon can certainly work without it, it's always better to hard switch into another pivot, then work from there into a sweeper or wallbreaker I run Waterium Z on Pelipper so that it has a high chance of KOing the lead Pokemon. Unfortunately, when Pelipper isn't nuking, just switching or dying. I'm not sure if this is ideal versus a more defensive set. I'd like multiple options to tank Grass moves, but the threat of Volt Switch or Discharge is usually too much to risk letting Pelipper tank something. -Ash-Greninja mostly spams Water Shuriken Unlike Ubers, Water Shuriken isn't simply a cleaning move. It can kill Tapu Koko in the rain, almost kills Garchomp in the rain. Basically anything with 70/70/70 tier defenses dies to it, and 80/80/80 is a questionable OHKO. LO works, but rarely do I find myself in a situation where a physical move like Gunk Shot really matters. Against bulky offense (<115 Speed), Dark Pulse and Hydro Pump are generally sufficient. And the repeated HP loss from LO make it hard for Greninja to keep switching in and out. So I went back to a specs set, but it feels really weird. I guess if Greninja had HP Fighting or Focus Blast it would be great. Or Knock Off/Close Combat on the physical side. ... Another thing I forgot from Ubers was Seismitoad. I used him as an additional way to check standard Geomancy Xerneas, but since he had no physical Water STAB I stopped using him I think, in favour of Gyarados to check physical attackers. Here, with the lower power level, I can run an insanely strong specs set: 252+ SpA Choice Specs Seismitoad Sludge Bomb vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 176-208 (43.6 - 51.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock Nothing walls Water/Ground/Poison, although a Primarina was able to tank the Sludge Bomb, so special walls are still a problem. I'm running Knock Off instead of Focus Blast and I'm not sure if that's ideal, but the only way to kill Chansey for me is to remove Eviolite. But Knock Off has very little power without LO. I wonder if Gyarados is worth it anymore, perhaps I should Azumarill there instead. He just seems way too useful with Intimidate and the Ground immunity.

The best way to view Knock Off is that you aren't using it for damage. Knocking Off Chansey's Eviolite is far more important.

Defeat of a standard team, although I'll note that player didn't do a good job of managing said team.
Gyarados was a security blanket for me so having to resort to Azumarill and not be able to OHKO stuff like Greninja will take some getting used to. But I walled the heck out of Kartana, and I know Tapu Bulu suffers as well with Superpower resisted. I wish Azumarill had some better moves to use with this set. Like how about STEAM ERUPTION instead of Scald?!

I figured out the fourth Greninja move: Protect. On top of not causing Life Orb recoil, Greninja is no longer forced out by Mega Medicham or Mega Lopunny and can finish them off with Water Shuriken (in rain). Mega Lopunny can still potentially win if it carries Quick Attack.
Based 132 Speed + 252 EVs = 363 speed This outspeeds Scarf Magnezone (360 speed) and +nature base 115. LO Modest WS = 100% OHKO against uninvested: Mega Manectric (70/80/80) Mega Medicham (60/85/85) Tapu Koko (70/85/75) Kartana (59/131/31) Zeraora (88/75/80) and Scarf Garchomp (108/95/85) are much riskier. There's a small chance to kill or tie with Breloom: if Water Shuriken crits twice, Breloom dies from Life Orb recoil. If it crits three times, Breloom dies outright. Given these attributes, have I missed anything that would force Greninja out? It looks like all I have are: Scarf Serperior Scarf Tapu Lele Scarf Jirachi Anything that resists both stab, so: Water/Fighting (Keldeo) Water/Fairy (Azumarill, Primarina, Tapu Fini) Water/Dark (Mega Gyarados, Crawdaunt, Sharpedo, Greninja) Grass/Fairy (Tapu Bulu) In the Water/Dark case Greninja resists both STAB, so the only problem is coverage. And in Azumarill's case, Belly Drum loses: I've only seem Belly Drum Azumarills and they get destroyed by Ash-Greninja.

Feels like I'm going in circles, using Qwilfish now. It's only a matter of time before the Quagsire meta, mark my words.
I thought this battle sucked, but it made me realize something. If Lele is scarfed and switches in, AV Qwilfish is a 4HKO with Moonblast from Scarf Lele. Psychic kills and Thunderbolt is a 2HKO, but if those moves are locked in, I can switch into Greninja or Swampert for free. I have it spec'd to handle Scarf Serperior, where it does over 70% with Poison Jab. Qwilfish would be awesome with a Ground-type move, but alas it does not. So my moveset is Waterfall/Poison Jab/Explosion/Fell Stinger. Not that great.

A set I'm experimenting with is Z-Rain Dance Araquanid.
What surprised me about this is I always thought Araquanid was frail. Far from it, it could actually handle a Thunderbolt from Thundurus-Therian: 252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Araquanid: 254-300 (91.6 - 108.3%) -- 50% chance to OHKO Huh? It doesn't have fantastic physical defenses, but by resisting Ground, Fighting and Water, I can switch in to some things. However, in spite of Water Bubble, Araquanid doesn't hit nearly hard enough to be of much use aside from a secondary rain setter. 252+ Atk Water Bubble Araquanid Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable in Rain: 270-318 (68.5 - 80.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery Stick Web is nice, but it doesn't really help me at all, since my team is already plenty fast. What I need is Stealth Rock or Spikes, and Araquanid has neither. Liquidation already isn't cutting it with all these boosts, so there needs to be SOME status that isn't Toxic. It's too bad and quite surprising. I thought Araquanid was devastatingly powerful but too slow to do anything. My usage was almost like an opposite of that.

I've lost two times to a Chansey with the following moveset:
Seismic Toss Wish Softboiled Heal Bell This trainer laughs at Stealth Rocks. What usually happens is Chansey switches in on a special attacker. When I go to something with Knock Off, the trainer switches to a Mega, like Mega Aggron. When the Mega is low health, it's switched out to Zapdos/Klefki/Mew, who threaten with Defog/Roost or screens/Stealth Rock. My only way of killing them is special attacks or status, after which Chansey switches in and uses Heal Bell. The two games I played went 40+ turns before I scooped. The common switch in is Greninja who can't break Chansey while as a regular Greninja + Eviolite. Is there a way to deal with this except Keldeo?

Took me about 5 days to realize this:
+1 0 Atk Azumarill Aqua Jet vs. 20 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko in Rain: 66-78 (23 - 27.2%) -- 44.3% chance to 4HKO 252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Aqua Jet vs. 20 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 93-109 (32.5 - 38.1%) -- 96.5% chance to 3HKO What's this meaningless calculation? Well, I'd only been using Azumarill to switch into Grass-type attacks, not realizing that I was forcing switches on choice users AND that the +1 attack gave Azumarill some semblance of offensive presence. I'd been using Scald, Knock Off, Play Rough and filler mostly for its utility. I never really thought that after eating a Grass-type move, Azumarill can actually fight back some in spite of the heavy defense investment. Changing this up has also allowed me to climb higher on rankings, and its utility is on full display here: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7ou-963580560 I'm using Aqua Jet, Knock Off, Play Rough and Scald, with a -speed nature. I have EVs in speed despite this to outspeed Chansey, Ferrothorn, Tangrowth, and Toxapex, without affecting offense or defense so Scald continues to hurt in the rain, while Aqua Jet can hit faster things that try to revenge kill. Azumarill is awesome! Now, if only I had decent sixth Pokemon. Please make Palkia OU, he's bad, really!
