The Kadokawa Kurse
Earlier today, it was confirmed Overlord would end with Volume 17.
At the same time, we got Volume 17 of Konosuba which was confirmed to have the same horrible end as the WN. And so comes the gruesome realization that Kadokawa, which holds a virtual monopoly on light novels in Japan, is giving more or less the same, "inoffensive" ending to all of their properties, much to the determent of the story or in sharp contrast to the natural conclusion. Here's some summaries of how the LNs end for big name properties: Slime Tensei Spoiler: show Overlord Spoiler: show Konosuba Spoiler: show So basically, the rough draft has been the final draft in all these cases, even though the LN itself has gone in a different path. Why, though? Why compromise literary integrity for...lame, uninspired, lazy endings like this? Literally lazy in that they're virtually unchanged from their original forms. Will Goblin Slayer and Haruhi befall the same fate?

Not exactly.
In Volume 10, we got a sneak peak of how it ends. But Tanigawa seems unable to write further stories to guide the plot to that conclusion. Either through pressure or disinterest, he hasn't written anything in a decade. Very similar to Kentaro Miura and Berserk where Miura became a different person and hasn't had the same drive to finish his masterwork. The "kurse" is a bit different, though. Japan has this tendency to go toward non-committal endings. That is, the character moves into a new status quo, either marrying a single girl or accepting some aging-related lifestyle change. Look at Pokemon up through XY! It's hardly unique as it also happens in harem mangas all the time, but LNs are starting to reach their conclusion points, and we're experiencing many of the same style of half-arsed endings that would be typically given to an axed manga or emergency end anime season. It really hurts if you want to get invested in an anthology series, knowing you'll be dashed on the sidewalk at the end by a weak-willed author.
