Jirachi [SWORD/SHIELD SPOILERS] FB Calendar Redone: Pokémon Pairing & Gen 8 Integration

So as the new Gen is coming up real soon, the time has finally come to redo the calendar. I know Pokémon Sword/Shield hasn’t been released yet, but since all the new Pokémon has (supposedly) been leaked, and we do try to aim to have a functional calendar before the new year, I concluded it was best to get things going as soon as possible.

If it wasn’t clear enough from the title of the thread and for what I have just said, this whole post (and thread) has gigantic spoilers concerning the new Pokémon introduced with Gen 8. I have put those concerning Pokémon in spoiler tags, but if you guys want to have 100% of the info of my planning, spoiler avoiders should tread this thread carefully, or even perhaps wait until the game’s release/start playing the game before reading it.

...We’re good? Ok, let’s go.

Step 1: Evaluation By Numbers

So first things first: we need to evaluate the state of things, and by that, I mean the following:
  1. How many days in the calendar that are without Pokémon;
  2. How many non-legendary Pokémon species lines there is in Gen 8 (and therefore how many days we will need); and
  3. By putting the above info together to figure out how many days, at a minimum, we need to free up to introduce the new Pokémon in the calendar.

So, after looking over the list of new Pokémon, here are all the Pokémon lines introduced in Gen 8, and its total minus the legendaries:

Spoiler: show
  1. Grookey (Thwackey, Rillaboom)
  2. Scorbunny (Raboot, Cinderace)
  3. Sobble (Drizzile, Inteleon)
  4. Rookiedee (Corvisquire, Corviknight)
  5. Skwovet (Greedent)
  6. Wooloo (Dubwool)
  7. Grossifleur (Eldegoss)
  8. Nicket (Thievil)
  9. Yamper (Bolthund)
  10. Milcery (Alcremie)
  11. Blipbug (Dottler, Orbeetle)
  12. Morpeko
  13. Chewtle (Drednaw)
  14. Hattena (Hattrem, Hatterene)
  15. Arrokuda (Barraskewda)
  16. Cramorant
  17. Silicobra (Sandaconda)
  18. Sinistea (Polteageist)
  19. Rolycoly (Carcoal, Coalossal)
  20. Cufant (Copperajah)
  21. Impidimp (Morgrem, Grimmsnarl)
  22. Toxel (Toxtricity)
  23. Snom (Frosmoth)
  24. Sizzlipede (Centiskorch)
  25. Clobbopus (Grapploct)
  26. Duraludon
  27. Stonjourner
  28. Pincurchin
  29. Ideedee
  30. Applin (Flapple, Appletun)
  31. Eiscue
  32. Dreepy (Drakloak, Dragapult)
  33. Falinks
  34. Draco/Arcto/zolt/vish
  35. Zacian
  36. Zamazenta
  37. Eternatus

Possible Legendaries: 3

Estimated total of new non-legendary Pokémon lines: 34

...That’s quite a bit.

And how many days in the calendar we have empty? Well if I am counting correctly, we have… *drumroll* only 18 days free.

We definitely need to do some cleanup. So in conclusion...

Spoiler: show
We will need to free up minimum 16 extra days in the calendar.

Step 2: Planning

Now that’s stated, we have to decide what to do with that information.

Freeing up days in the calendar by grouping some Pokémon together is the obvious course of action. However, we have a few constraints and things to think of before heading on doing that:
  • Limited time: we have until December 31st to complete all the decisions and placement of all the Pokémon within the calendar.
  • Possibility of delaying integration in online calendar: Of course, time is needed to integrate the new dates in the online calendar. It needs to have the Pokémon dates re-entered manually, testing it to make sure it looks good, etc. However, this can be put aside temporarily, as the new calendar can be temporarily available only in an image form to win some time.
  • Possibility to only pair what’s needed: If we are out of time to pair Pokémon up and choose the dates, we can simply pair up the most obvious Pokémon pairs for just the right amount of free extra days and put them in one of their existing dates. However…
  • Possibility of future-proofing: It’s a given that we’ll have more gens in the future. Therefore, it might be smart to save time and trouble to group/pair as many Pokémon as possible right now. That way, we won’t have to do the same thing when Gen 9+ shows up; all we would need to do thrown in the new Pokémon in without the worry of not fitting in the calendar.
  • Be mindful of the workload: To be more precise, make sure that after all is said and done, that I won’t be overloaded with updating more Pokémon within a certain time (I usually update every two weeks). The pairings will definitely raise that workload already, but best to minimise that.
  • Possibility of moving all the Pokémon’s dates: That’s something that has been talked about before when we had to redo/discuss about the Calendar way back when we had to redo Fizzy Bubbles as a whole. Since we are moving Pokémon around with the pairings already, it is the perfect opportunity to place Pokémon on dates that makes more sense, whenever because of a holiday, of the (american) season, or otherwise significant link between the date and the Pokémon. (No, not gonna do specials of people wanting X Pokémon on their personal birthdays though.)

So what should we do with all that? Here are my suggestions:
  • Keep the birthday pairings around 2-3 Pokémon. Just by splitting the amount of Pokémon lines/birthdays in half more than enough to leave room for the new Pokémon, and more for the future. Also, keeping the amount of Pokémon within a day, while doubling it, will still keep it at a minimum.
  • Have minimum the amount of pairings needed to make room for all the new Pokémon, but if possible, make as many pairings as possible. The former point is obvious, but the latter is still important since we do still want to reduce the amount of work in the future. Besides, there’s quite a lot of Pokémon that can be easily paired together… a lot which I already have suggestions for, as you’ll see later.
  • Officially open a position for “BBB assistant”. Now now, I’m not stepping down! That calendar is my FB baby of sorts, and it’ll take a lot for me to abandon it! I’m just saying that since the workload will more or less double, it would be best that I get a helping hand with the updating so I have the same amount of workload than I currently have. Best solution I figured is the calendar would be updated weekly (instead of the usual biweekly) and have my assistant and I alternate between the weeks to update.
  • Move the Pokémon dates only if the dates/Pokémon are fitting. No need to move them if they are well where they are! That said, we still need to plan where everyone will end up after pairing the Pokémon. (We’ll get into the details later).
  • Priority goes to making a crude image version of the calendar. We can pretty it up later, and update the online calendar proper even more later. That way, we make sure we have something for everyone to work with, while giving us more time to do everything before our deadline.

Is all of that good? Yeah? Ok, now to the nitty-gritty!

Step 3: Pairing/Grouping Pokémon

This is where it starts taking more time, help and opinions. While some Pokémon are very easy to be grouped together, some are a little more difficult with people not agreeing with them or not… and some Pokémon are not apparently linked to any other Pokémon. So to help things moving, here are some guidelines I have written on how we should try to pair Pokémon.

The grouped Pokémon has to make sense in some way. Examples:
  • Related in some way by their Pokédex entries and/or in-game functionality
    • Follow the same “theme” (bonus: also Type and/or Gen)
    • Have the same/similar Type and are version exclusives of game versions
    • Inspired from the same real world animal/thing
    • Related together through anime/manga/other non-game canon source
    • Work well together with a certain date
  • Keep the groups at best 2 Pokémon, maybe 3 Pokémon if it makes sense with the above point.
  • No grouping Pokémon that are enemies to each other (ex.: Zangoose and Seviper, Corsola and Mareanie)

Now we’re not starting out on a blank slate: I already have some suggestions written down! The first pairings are those that I suggest to take priority if we want to keep the pairings to a minimum. I still got a lot more than just that to pair though, so make sure you read them through! (For the pairings that involves Gen 8 Pokémon, I have conveniently put those into a separate spoilered list.)
  1. Plusle / Minun
  2. Remoraid / Mantyke
  3. Scyther / Pinsir
  4. Elekid / Magby
  5. Cleffa / Igglybuff
  6. Throh / Sawk

  50. Cranidos / Shieldon
  51. Tirtouga / Archen
  52. Tyrunt / Amaura

Pairings involving Gen 8 Pokémon:
Spoiler: show

Note that some of those pairings are speculation, and might need to be changed whenever the game will be released.
  1. Grookey / Scorbunny / Sobble
  2. Draco-Arcto-zolt-vish… things
  3. Electrike / Yamper
  4. Inkay / Clobbopus
  5. Qwilfish / Mareanie / Pincurchin
  6. Pachirisu / Skwovet
  7. Vanillite / Milcery
  8. Scraggy / Toxel
  9. Mareep / Wooloo

Unfortunately but inevitably, some pairings are a bit more difficult to choose due to the Pokémon being able pair up well with multiple but completely different other Pokémon. Here some of the pairings I cannot choose from, and would like to let you guys decide:
  • Smoochum:
    • Lapras (related strongly to the anime Christmas episode, and have already close birthday dates)
    • Elekid / Magby (Gen 1 counterparts trio)
  • Stantler:
    • Delibird (related strongly to the anime Christmas episode, and have already close birthday dates)
    • Deerling (deer Pokémon)
  • Foongus:
    • Paras / Morelull (mushroom Pokémon)
    • Voltorb (Pokémon that are disguised as Pokéballs)
  • Shellder:
    • Slowpoke (in canon info, Shellder is needed to evolve Slowpoke)
    • Staryu (Counterparts: Water Types evolves w/ Water Stone, version exclusives, etc)
    • Clamperl (Both clams/seashells)
  • Vulpix:
    • Sandshrew (Gen 1 Pokémon that can evolve into Alolan variant with Ice Stone)
    • Growlithe (Gen 1 Pokémon that evolves with Fire Stone, version exclusives, etc)
  • All the other non-paired doggos (Snubbul, Smeargle, Riolu, Lillipup, Furfrou)

Questioned pairings involving Gen 8 Pokémon:
Spoiler: show
  • Phanpy:
    • Teddiursa (Gen 2 parallels: version exclusives with 1 evolution + Pickup ability)
    • Cufant (Elephants)
  • Rolycoly:
    • Geodude (similar shape)
    • Torkoal (Coal)
  • Gogoat:
    • Mareep / Wooloo (goat/sheep)
    • ??? (Gogoat is a goat, not a sheep)

And obviously, there’s all those other Pokémon that I just can’t place with another, either because they’re their own thing, or they’re Gen 8 and we don’t have enough information of them yet to pair them up properly (doesn’t mean I still tried though) or that I’m too lazy to look all 800+ Pokémon. If you have a Pokémon pairing that isn’t listed here, please share! (Also, please share if you do not agree with those pairings, too! They’re just ideas/guidelines, not an official list.)

Step 4: Date Assignment

Final part of of the whole thing, placing Pokémon into new dates. In a similar fashion as to decide the Pokémon pairings, here are some guidelines/suggestions:
  • Leave at the same date the Legendaries and (if possible) UPCs.
  • Leave the Pokémon the same or close to its original date.
  • Pokémon follows a theme related to a real world holiday (international if possible) and/or event.
  • Pokémon Type fits the North American seasons/weather:
    • Spring (March - May):
      • Grass
      • Fairy
      • Bug
      • Ground
    • Summer (June - August):
      • Fire
      • Water
      • Bug
    • Fall (September - November):
      • Ghost
      • Dark
      • Poison
      • Psychic
      • Water
    • Winter (December - February):
      • Ice
  • Avoid putting 3-pokémon groups and/or popular Pokémon close together.
  • Do not choose a Pokémon for your own birthday (or otherwise personal reason).

And here are my suggestions so far. Note that some aren’t paired yet (at least as far as my previous suggestions went), so in those cases I have marked those with question marks. Also due to the nature of this, I have left out Gen 8 Pokémon.

Conclusion

So have you read everything? If yes then thank you for your interest! If not, or if you're still a little confused… I gotchu, here's a tl;dr of what's happening and what's needed to be done and need your help deciding with:
  • With the new gen coming up, we need more room in the calendar for the new Pokemon
  • To do that, we're putting Pokemon in groups of 2-3 and changing birthday dates to more appropriate ones
  • Help needed for:
    1. Deciding and confirming/approving on groups of Pokemon
    2. Deciding and confirming/approving the dates which will be the new birthdays for the Pokemon of each group

Thank you very much for your help and assistance; I cannot do this alone

Reading over this, this does look good.

I'd honestly much prefer to keep the groupings to Counter Parts/Version Exclusives/Trios (Like Starters + Monkeys). It just feels a lot easier than trying to have things be together based off appearance.

Girafarig not already being listed in with Gemini seems silly to me, as is
Spoiler: show
wooloo not already being with gogoat.

Pairing munchlax with gulpin (another damage-sponge type pokemon with a massive appetite) seems like a smart move to me as well, especially since Autumn is already listed as Poison season anyway (speaking of, why is November missing in your listing of what months are part of what season?).

Chatot slotting into September 19 (National Talk Like a Pirate Day) could be silly, since it's the closest we have to a pirate's parrot pokemon at the moment.

Pairing drowzee and munna (two Psychic-Typed tapir that eat dreams) together and slipping them into March 13 (2020's World Sleep Day) seems like a flavor win to me. Alternatively, they could go into September 25th (World Dream Day), even though that technically refers to aspirations rather than somnial hallucinations- it has the plus side of putting them into Psychic's designated season, at least.

August 19 is National Sandcastle Day- perfect for our sapient sandcastles (i.e., sandygast)!

Spoiler: show
The new pokemon applin could possibly go on either Semptember 21 (National Apple Day), September 26 (Johnny Appleseed Day), or May 13 (National Apple Pie Day). It's surprisingly got some versatility here!

December 13 is National Horse Day, so why not give that to the pokehorses, rapidash and/or mudsdale?

With September 25 being National Cooking Day, I can't think of a better place to put the elemental monkeys (pansage, panpour, and pansear). One of them is even in one of the Season's Types!

And I think I'll take a break for now. Gotta give other people a chance to voice their thoughts, ya know?

That is noted! That said, not all Pokémon have anything you have mentioned, so the only thing we can go with is appearances and whatever we can come up with related to things outside of games (ie anime, manga, etc).

That said, I take it that Smoochum case you would prefer Mime Jr, and in Shellder's case you would prefer Staryu?

Alright, let's get that point by point!
  • Gemini - Girafarig: Oooh, that went over my head! I was actually going towards Klink, due to being two parts and it is actually the pokémon used for the Unova zodiac signs. (Note that they're using only Unova Pokémon though, and lots of the choices suck.)
  • Gogoat pairing:
    Spoiler: show
Hmm, Wooloo is more of a sheep than a goat though. I would've paired Wooloo more with Mareep.
  • Munchlax and Gulpin: I actually thought of that, but I wasn't sure so I dropped it ^^; Since you mentioned it though, that confirms my idea was good! So I'll add him in. (And whoops about the missing November. I guess I should've remembered it more.)
  • Chatot date: That works! (I did a quick search and while there is Pirate-like characters in the anime, none really had pirate-y Pokémon.
  • Drowzee-Munna: Yup! Pairing good! Although I'm not sure which will be the best day for it. I would prefer March one, although it sucks that they keep changing the year for Sleep day... I'll go with March 16th since in about the middle of the range of when it happens.
  • Sandygast for August 19: Works for me! Plus the sandcastle Pokémon is fitting for summer.
  • [Gen 8 spoiler Pokémon]: Great idea, but I won't be adding in the list until next week. It is noted though!
  • Ponyta/Mudbray for December 13: Coolios!
  • elemental monkeys for September 25: That is indeed a good spot! (sadly Munchlax and Gulpin has their spot for Thanksgiving, because it would be funny to put those on the next day to eat all that cooking.)

Admittedly, I thinking less about wooloo and more about its evolution, dubwool. It's four horns make it seem particularly likely that the line based off of sheep/goat crossbreeds (Compare the second picture to our pokebuddy), which means that it could slot in as a partner for either mareep or gogoat.

That is true. At worse we can put all three together! ...But I dunno. I've put in the Gen 8 section of the debatable pairings so others can discuss it.

Personally I wouldn't mind to put all 3 together, but on the first forms Gogoat is out of place, but on the final evolutions, Ampharos kinda is XP And evolutions aside, there's also the part that a Dubwool is a ram, not a goat. (which reminds me that Gogoat is used for the Capricorn zodiac that is represented by a goat, while Aries is represented by a ram.)

Smoochum is part of a trio with Magby and Elekid. Shellder and Staryu work.

Mime Jr and Bonsly are counterparts.

As for the appearance thing, it just feels like its lumping together completely unrelated Pokemon just because they seem similar. I much rather see how the calendar fares in terms of space with what I mentioned in the first post before we try to chimera days with multiple unrelated Pokemon.

(E.g Make it so Luvdisc is Valentines and then Alomomola March 14th for White's Day)

I see, those are good points! It's a bit too early to settle things in though, so I'll wait for others to pitch in their own thoughts before making any hard decisions ^^

Personally, I do have a slight preference with pairing those that are linked together game-wise, but there is a lot of times that a different pairing due to appearances or other reasons might be stronger than those that are "game linked".

For example, while I do see the trio of Smoochum with Magby and Elekid, Smoochum is the "runt" of the trio due to not having a third evolution, and as I've mentioned in my first post Jynx is closely related to Christmas being Santa's "elves" in the Pokémon anime, so it would make sense to put Smoochum with another Christmas-related Pokémon, Lapras (Not to mention that those two are already close together in the current calendar.) And as for Mime Jr. and Bonsly, other than being baby Pokémon introduced in Gen 4 and being together in the Pokédex, I find there's not much of a link

On the flip side, for Shellder, Clamperl is the weakest choice in my opinion since Shellder is not that much linked to Clamperl other than their appearance and sharing the same species name (Bivalve Pokémon). Now to choose between Staryu and Slowpoke... that's another story ^^; (I might have a small preference with Slowpoke though, due to evolution being an important thing, and goes in the same light of thought as Remoraid and Mantyke.)

For Mime Jr and Bonsly, they're also linked to the same evolution method (Level up by knowing Mimic, and are the only two who have that specific method) and the two Pokemon shared the spotlight in an anime episode together.

As for Smoochum/Jynx, the specific episodes were banned and I never really associate the line with the holiday while I heavily associate Smoochum with Magby and Elekid. It does unfortunately fall into a similar situation as Scyther/Pinsir did, which were counterparts until Heracross which made Pinsir and Heracross counterparts (as evidenced by their megas and so forth.)

I would sill prefer Shellder/Staryu. Both of them are version exclusive water stone evos from gen 1. While lore wise Shellder and Slowpoke makes sense, we never got the Slowbro!Shellder as its own mon.

Bonsly and and Mime Jr. weren't just introduced together, they were Semi-Version Exclusive counterparts. While both could be found in the Trophy Garden in Diamond and Pearl, only one of them could also be found on Routes 209 and 210- Mime Jr. only in Diamond, and bonsly only in Pearl. Not only that, but they also share the need to know Mimic before evolving, which is a specific requirement that is only seen between the two pokemon. This is why a lot of people pair the two together whithout considering their fellow Gen. 4 babies (mantyke, riolu, chingling, munchlax, happini, and budew) as part of the group.

Edit: Looks like I've been accelgor'd! Whoops.

Huh, TIL for me! To be fair, I didn't watch much of the anime at that time, and I have never played D/P. (It's the only Pokémon Gen I have skipped.) I definitely going to add the Mime Jr. and Bonsly pairing then ^^

As for Jynx and Shellder, I'll leave it for more people to pitch in on the matter, but do know that while I have a different opinion, I accept yours Lit, and if it proves to be more popular, I'll be more than happy to take on that route

We do not need to revamp the entire Calendar.

Simply grouping starters together in groups of three, fossils in pairs, and VEs in pairs will give us enough days. The dates can be whatever, there's no real need for any kind of thematic quality to any of the dates.

I understand that, but in the previous FB Calendar talks, there was mention of changing the dates so it would make more thematically sense, but it was put off to wait for this very moment: the revamp of the calendar for the new Gen. So here we are doing just that. Also as I mentioned, there is need of preparing for the next gens after, so by making extra room now, we won't have to worry about making room in the future.

That said, if we see that we are short on time to do that plan, we'll take that shorter simpler route. Or just go with what we worked on so far, and just filling the "blanks" by basing ourselves with the current calendar.

I think right now what the mod team is looking to change in the calendar is to clear up enough dates to accomodate all of the new gen 8 pokemon species.

If we have time leftover we can consider moving a few select pokemon around to fit MAJOR holidays as long as the theme permits (ie. Braviary on the 4th of July). We do not need to dive into this too deep and play a game of 365 musical chairs to accommodate every minor little "Sandcastle Day" and whatnot.

The goal of this reorganization is to prepare for gen 8. We're not too concerned with generation 9 or 10, etc, as it will be at least 2 years until that time comes. The quicker we can sort this out means the more time we'll have available to sort out other aspects of integrating gen 8 into Fizzy Bubbles.

Alright, let's see... OK, to start with, every point I make here is gonna mention spoilers, or at least most of them, so I'm just gonna encase the whole thing in a spoiler tag because I'm fairly tired and would like to minimize the risk of accidentally giving an unmarked spoiler by mistake.

Spoiler: show
First off, instead of just lumping together Plusle and Minun, I feel it'd both make perfect sense and also be more practical to lump together every Pikaclone into one birthday. Not only do we also free up space being held by Pachirisu, Emolga, Dedenne, and Togedemaru, but we also already have a category to slot Morpeko into. I feel it might even be worth considering throwing Mimikyu into that mix, since it's a different take on the whole Pikaclone concept. *gets handed a card* Oh, for Arceus's sake, Anion, I'm not reading this... oh, fine. *ahem* Uh, and also, in doing this, "we remove the risk of perpetuating the heinous stereotype that Plusle and Minun are some sort of automatic package deal when they are individual, distinct Pokémon, especially Minun which are the coolest-" Oh, are you kidding me...

Second, it'd free up more space to lump together the starters, not by generation, but by type. Instead of one day for Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, and one day for Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile, and so forth, we have one day for Bulbasaur, Chikorita, Treecko, Turtwig, Snivy, Chespin, Rowlet, and Grookey, one day for Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic, Chimchar, Tepig, Fennekin, Litten, and Scorbunny, and one day for Squirtle, Totodile, Mudkip, Piplup, Oshawott, Froakie, Popplio, and Sobble. This would also count as future-proofing, letting us effortlessly handle subsequent starters without taking up additional days, unless they decide to change the type triangle on us. I don't know if you feel this make make those birthdays too bloated, though. As an additional point, if we do go with grouping them by generation, there's also the idea of lumping the Pichu and Eevee lines in with the Kanto starters, since Pikachu and Eevee are starters in their own right. Though again, that might make the day unnecessarily bloated. It's not called the Eeveepocalypse for nothing...

Third, I'm not completely certain of the practicality of this one, but perhaps lump all the fossils together? This would certainly be more bloated than lumping together the Pikaclones, so maybe just one day for each generation's fossils. At the very least, I think that given their... uniquely interchangeable nature, that Arctovish, Arctozolt, Dracovish, and Dracozolt should all share a birthday. And as far as placement goes, perhaps maybe have them situated in the general area of Relicanth day if possible, since Relicanth is something of an honorary fossil mon itself.

Fourth, a few more ideas that might not be the biggest priorities, but are worth considering to make further space if we need to; One birthday for all pseudo-legendaries; One birthday for all baby Pokémon; One birthday for Zubat, Woobat, and Noibat.

Fifth, and I apologize in advance if you've already thought this through and accounted for this, but as the Type: Null line is considered legendary, that can be outright removed from the calendar since legendaries already got their own day.

Right. Well, there's already well enough groups to fit the Gen 8 species already, and that's just going with the top obvious pairings. The "extra" pairings is to also make room for the other gens afterwards so we won't need to go through this all over again (or at least the workload will be smaller and easier). It's ok if we don't get to pair everyone, but at the very least, we'll have lots of room to spare for Gen 9 and whatnot. (Some might argue that we don't need to do that... but I guess that's just me who prefers to prevent work later.)

As for changing the dates, yeah we're moving things to make it more fitting for the holidays, but I also see it as a fun thing to put them on more insignificant days. I mean, the whole thing is supposed to be fun, right? ^^; Not to mention that it was something that a lot of people wanted to have/do but we held it off 'till now. Again, like it's ok that not every Pokémon aren't paired with another, it's ok if not every Pokémon/pairing goes on a day that isn't 100% fitting because it doesn't have a fitting "holiday" related to them or whatever.

All in all, we already got enough pairings for Gen 8, so now we let fun in by choosing other pairings that I might have not thought of and place them in fun/funny/appropriate dates, and after a bit we'll take care of fill in the blanks.

Well, the whole reason why I didn't put all the starters, fossils, pikaclones, babies, and pseudo-legendaries together (not in one day now! In their own days) is exactly the reason why I've put the 2-3 Pokémon limit for each group/day: when it'll come for me (or my future assistant) to update, it'll be a way bigger workload than usual. To get in my logic, take the current 1 Pokémon/day, and my usual update schedule is once every 2 weeks, so 14 Pokémon birthdays. By putting two Pokémon every day instead, that'll go up to maximum 28 Pokémon every 2 weeks... Which I know that currently an update after even 3 weeks is a lot and tiring (for me anyways) so I can only imagine how bad it'll feel to update 4 current weeks' worth of Pokémon every 2 weeks. which is why I want to bring in an assistant so that way we can update every week with the same current workload of 14 Pokémon. But if we have even just one day that has, say, all the grass type starters, that number will go up to 20 Pokémon for one week... which that doesn't include any new starters that will be introduced in Gen 9+, that will bloat up that number even more. Which is why I prefer to just stick with the three starters of one Gen, and try as much as possible to keep things at 2-3 Pokémon per day.

As for the specific groups:
  • Pikaclones: Yep, I did think of pairing two of each together! But I am not sure how to separate them. I was tempted of just going Gen 2-3, 4-5, etc, but I decided to let everyone choose. (And yes, I know Anion that a lot of groupings are stereotypes like Plusle and Minun, but it doesn't mean the individuals aren't celebrated! I mean, myself I only own a Plusle with no Minun in sight.)
    Spoiler: show
That said, I have done one pairing with a Gen 8 Pokémon involving a Pikaclone: Pachirisu and Skwovet. They're both squirrels so I thought they would be fitting. If you would prefer another Pikaclone with Pachirisu instead though, feel free to say!
  • Pichu-Eevee: It's already a pairing there! Currently group #41 to be exact. (Although I just realized I wrote it Pikachu instead of Pichu, whoops.) Anyhow, yeah, I am more than aware of the Eeveepocalypse is already huge and pairing it with the whole franchise's mascot is gonna make it evolve into an Eeveepikalypse, but surprisingly the Pichu line isn't that popular in FB, so I would think it would go fine. Anyways the Eeveepocalypse is inevitable, so gotta roll with that!
  • Fossils: Yep, they are there too! #48 to #52. Not sure about Relicanth though, but he should definitely go with a Pokémon that is also ancient.
    Spoiler: show
And also yep, I have mentioned having Arctovish, Arctozolt, Dracovish, and Dracozolt as one of the exceptions to my 2-3 Pokémon rule due to their nature. They're at #2 in the spoilered Gen 8 pairings!
  • Zubat, Woobat, and Noibat: Way ahead of you! Look over group #30!
  • Type: Null: That is definitely a good point! I'll definitely yeet its name out since he is a legendary.

...Wow, I missed a lot of those. >_< I guess I was bound to slip up in some way when I insisted on posting in this while trying to not fall asleep.

Another suggestion- I don't know how likely we are to go with this since we've already got it paired with Lotad, and not without good reason, but considering what sparked the Fizzbylution in the first place, maybe we pair Seedot with Pyukumuku for Fizzy Bubbles Day?

Sorry for not direct quoting and stuff, I'm on mobile so it's a bit iffy ^^;

>MM
Don't worry about it! I understand you were really tired when you posted that ^^ There was a lot of info to take too.

As for Seedot being put on FB day, weeeeell I think this is a case for the mods to answer, but I have a feeling it might not be fully appropriate. While we're not hiding on what has conspired before FB's renewal, we don't want to full alienate those that were involved in the whole thing and celebrate that revolution. (Case in point: the reason FB Day is on the day current FB got their new mods instead of the day that stuff went down.) Any thoughts, mods? But in another standpoint, Seedot has no canon reason to be linked with Pyukumuku, which is a bit eh.

>Heather

You know, you're absolutely right! I'll have those two pair up in a bit!

Alright so bit of announcement: Since it seems like people have settled down a bit in terms of comments and additions, the 30-day countdown to the new year is starting soon AND Sword/Shield has been out for a good week, I'm gonna start to work on the rough/picture version of the new calendar soon. My plan is to make it as an Excel sheet on Google docs for easy viewing for everyone as I work on it. After it's done, I'll just screenshot it... Or actually, use that Excel sheet directly :P If you see any mistakes or anything to be added/changed, let me know! ^^ (Just note I'll be using a copy/paste of the old calendar as a base, so hold on for the date changes!)

There's a few pairings I like. Slowpoke and Psyduck definitely belong together due to being the Gen I derps and for being counterparts in games like Gen I where you had to trade their respective evos to get Lickitung (not to mention rarities were reversed).

How about this though? Shellder and Remoraid? Okay while the former technically isn't true, both are required narratively to evolve Pokemon, and both a single evolved form.

I think Golett and CyberBlastoise are great counterparts and should share birthdays.

I can see Slowpoke and Psyduck work! And it also eliminates one of the pairings I have difficulty with (Shellder).

But speaking of which, I personally don't see Shellder and Remoraid together, especially since Remoraid is already well paired with Mantyke, since the former is needed to evolve the latter.

And no hunny, no Golett on your birthday :P

While I'm here, since I started putting up the pairs into the calendar, I have thought of some new pairings and a few decisions I have taken (although feel free to say a word against it, I can change my mind!)
  • Poliwag / Tympole (frog Pokémon)
  • Phanpy / Teddiursa
    Spoiler: show
(Phanpy / Cufant makes less sense despite being both elephants)
  • Geodude / Roggenrola (rock types that have the same evolution patterns)
  • Spoiler: show
    Rolycoly / Torkcoal (Coal)
  • Spoiler: show
Mareep / Wooloo (Sheep obviously, but note that Gogoat isn't with them: Gogoat is, well, a goat, not a sheep.)
  • March 1st: Omanyte /Kabuto /Aerodactyl (because All Hail Lord Helix Day.)

Hey, can I be your assistant (I know I have absolutely no way of winning the job, but I'll at least try)
I think we should pair these few:
  1. Corsola and Farfetch'd (due to the fact that
    Spoiler: show
    Cursola and Sirfetch'd are counterparts
  2. Jynx and Mr. Mime (no reason, just a pair of Humanoid Gen 1 Pokemon that are psychic-type and generally hated.)
  3. Let's yeet Legendaries from the calendar because I think that giving Legendaries that privilege of a free 3 levels, a Move Tutor move, and a TM move, which may make them a tad overpowered, but what do I know.
  4. Sableye and Mawile should be paired.
  5. Maybe we could just jam all starters into 1 day? Although we may be giving starter specialists a field day.
  6. Let's throw all pseudos on one day too

Hey, you don't know if you're gonna get it or not! But at least thanks for the reminder of putting up the demand soon!

>Corsola and Farfetch'd
Eeeh, I think it's a bit of a stretch, but maybe it's just because it's too early in Sword/Shield to say. I'll think about it!

>Jynx and Mr. Mime
I'm gonna have to say no on that one ^^; Jynx already have some stronger potential pairings, either with Lapras (related strongly to the anime Christmas episode, and have already close birthday dates) and Elektabuzz / Magmar (Gen 1 counterparts trio).

>yeeting Legendaries
Well while legendaries owned in FB are super rare (for obvious reasons, and also because a lot of those who had some are no longer active), you also have to consider that the Legendaries' birthdays is on February 29th, meaning that the birthday only happens once every 4 years. So I think it's pretty fair.

>Sableye and Mawile
Oh, that could be one pairing. I'll look more into it!

>all starters in one day; all pseudos in one day
Oooooooooooooh heck no. You say it'll give starter specialists a field day... but what about the "field day" me and my future assistant will have? As I mentioned many times before, putting more thank 2-3 Pokémon within a day is going to be too much trouble to update. It's going to be the Eeveepocalipse (Eevee is the most popular Pokémon in FB, to the point that Eevee day has been nicknamed as such), but 5 times worse... especially considering that Eevee is a starter. It just screams "burnout" ^^; While it's _slightly_ less of a case for the pseudos, it is still a big problem.

I'm officially applying.
Let's pair Machamp, Gengar and Alakazam on one day.
Reasons
  1. Both three-stage lines
  2. Both end with a trade
  3. Have weird but lovable middle stages
  4. Have badass finals
  5. Alakazam and Gengar got megas, meanwhile Machamp got
    Spoiler: show
a Gigantamax form along with Gengar
