Homestar Runner
homestarrunner.com was a site I thoroughly enjoyed in high school, in an era before YouTube, 4chan, and Web 2.0. Alongside NewGrounds, it was my window to the world, and with kosher entertainment (I could never share the 18+ on NewGrounds with classmates!) it was easy to get people to watch and support.
But over the years, Homestar Runner has declined in popularity despite having no major content changes. In fact, it hasn't been updated in two years (to my shock!), and I'm curious if it's because the internet has changed, with tastes in material moving away from H*R, or if H*R was more a product of a lack of competition, being one of the high quality flash sites in a world where there were fewer distractions, and the concept of television watchable on a computer was more a rumour than a reality on the horizon.

Homestar Runner was the shit. My favorites were SB Emails and the Halloween Specials. Also The Cheat was my favorite song for a while.
Who makes out with Marzipan? THE CHEAT. THE CHEAT.

It declined because a. the humor started to slow down and b. because the creator stopped making videos.
He now works on Gravity Falls. As a side note, Cleveland, OH had a guitar statue of 'The Cheat' at the Rock Hall of Fame's main lobby a few years back. Also, I made a Strongbad costume for Halloween '04 in high school. Quote:

I have no idea what this means, but might I point out that from the modern era of the site through its final updates, the humour was largely the same. That's why I suspect the world around H*R changed and lost interest, much like how Maddox is now just one angry guy, instead of one of the more sensible people on the internet.
One NewGrounds, there was a guy named LegendaryFrog who went through something similar to what I'm seeing with H*R. When LF first published his parody flash cartoons, there wasn't a ton of competition from legit artists, so his stuff was a) better than average and b) much funnier. His One Ring to Rule Them All 2 was hysterical back in 2003. But LF started recycling jokes, and his style became predictable, starting with his first Zelda parody, The Return of Ganondorf. That was still a highly rated video, but after that, people started criticizing him, and LF eventually backlashed against better artists and stopped making videos altogether.

H*R is pretty much the best Flash series ever.
I watched all the Halloween episodes on Halloween. That was awesome. |
