Missingno. Master- With the battle underway, you urge Zoom to take evasive action. The furry noodle swerves around with amazing agility, her speeding increasing as she does her best to avoid the Will-O-Wisp flames tailing her at every turn. Eventually the Phantump tires of the attack, conceding that Zoom was too quick to catch with the searing flames. As the flames fade from existence, Zoom coils herself up as she so often does, boosting her attack and defence, as well as her accuracy.

She's thankful for the defence boost when the Phantump sends a barrage of rocks her way. The Furret grits her teeth, the Phantump wasn't trying to bury her like last time, this time it was out to deal as much damage as possible. So was she. Springing out of her coil, Zoom leaps into the air, one clawed paw coated in flame. A hollow thump rings out as she slams the super effective blow into the Phantump's stump, followed by a shrill cry from the Phantump.

"Zoom huh?" the figure mused, "so reliant on speed, but what happens when speed abandons you?" You can sense the figure is up to something and as soon as his orders leave his sickly blue lips, you realise what he is on about. "Phantump, turn the tables, Trick Room."

The Phantump giggles as it lets out a surge of psychic energy, creating a large cube that occupies most of the clearing. Zoom watches as the Phantump begins to zip around with surprising speed, cackling in amusement. Speed was what she was, heck her name was Zoom! However inside the Trick Room she'd be as slow as a Slugma on a cold windy day.

However inside the Trick Room she'd be as slow as a Slugma on a cold windy day.
The battle was on! Terri and Zoom both knew where the Furret's strengths lay, and sought to capitalize on it immediately. Zoom was off, using Agility both to boost her own Speed and also to evade the Will-O-Wisp that would surely cripple her offensive capabilities. After this succeeded, Zoom pulled off Coil and Fire Punch, and was off to a terrific start.

So of course their fiendish foe knew exactly what to do to rob Zoom of her big advantage. In an instant, Phantump had turned things around with Trick Room, and now the spectral stump was the one zooming around at high speeds, while the normally swift Zoom was left to move at a Magcargo's pace.

One would think that such a development would have unnerved Terri, but if that was the case, she sure didn't look it. Indeed, this made Terri think back to when she first met Keith Masters, back when she'd battled him to prove that she really would be a good Trainer to the man's Swoobat, Starmie, and Inkay. Trick Room had played a role in that battle as well, and Keith's Minun had been able to circumvent the sudden Speed disadvantage. Using, as fate would have it, a move that Zoom herself knew as well.

"Fuck!" swore Zoom as she struggled to even move. "Arceus, Mew, and Helix, this is some fucking Tauros shit-"

"Stay calm, Zoom!" Terri called out, cutting across the foulmouthed Furret's frustration. "Use Foresight right now, then close in fast and land a Quick Attack! And while the gap's still closed, follow up with Brutal Swing!" She had been planning to have Zoom use Foresight at some point in this fight anyway, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. And Trick Room might screw around with the Speed of all involved Pokémon, might make things like Agility have the opposite of the intended effect, but Quick Attack was Quick Attack any way you slice it. And of course, Quick Attack alone wouldn't be enough to win the battle, but the help it would provide in closing the gap would be huge, giving Zoom the perfect opportunity to unleash a super effective Brutal Swing.

Missingno. Master- You remain calm despite the sudden twist of fate. You'd been through something like this before, Trick Room wasn't an instant win, there were work arounds. Zoom locks in on her opponent, taking some time to analyse it enough that she will be able to land Normal and Fighting moves on the Ghost typed Phantump. With that set, she surges forward with a Quick Attack, the move allowing her to still move quickly despite the effects of the Trick Room.

"Predictable", the figure mutters, "Grass Knot." Before Zoom can react, a small loop of grass sprouts in front of her. Moving at such speed she has no time to react. Her foot gets caught in the grass and she trips into a somersault, slamming into the hard ground as the air is knocked from her lungs. "Excellent, now Horn Leech while its down." The Phantump is on her before she can even recover, moving with incredible speed within the Trick Room. It jams its glowing branches into Zoom's back, draining life from her and replenishing its own. Zoom swings around, lashing out with her tail in a brutish display of strength but the Phantump retreats fast enough to only take a glancing blow. The Phantump retreats high into the air, likely preparing for its next assault.

"Excellent work Phantump, victory is almost ours", the figure grins in delight, "trap it with a Leech Seed, then drop a Seed Bomb." The figure had proven itself a capable tactician, this wouldn't be some regular old battle, you'd have to be on your A game.

With Foresight having landed, Terri knew things were going their way again. Phantump no longer had immunity to Normal or Fighting moves, which gave Zoom more options to work with. Unfortunately, however, this adversary saw the Foresight/Quick Attack combo coming a mile away, evidently, for he knew exactly what to do. The only thing worse than an evil kidnapping murderous ghoul thing was an evil kidnapping murderous ghoul thing what that knew its way around a Pokémon fight. Indeed, Phantump's Grass Knot did its work, tripping up Zoom but good, and leaving it a sitting Ducklett for the follow-up Horn Leech. Terri gritted her teeth- Phantump was gonna regain the upper hand if this kept up. Zoom wasn't gonna be in this for much longer at this rate! She had to think fast, had to- fast! Of course!

"Burn up the Leech Seed with Fire Punch!" Terri called out to Zoom. "Then Quick Attack again to dodge Seed Bomb, and use Dig!" These were slightly more desperate measures, but then, that's pretty much what desperate times call for. Terri wasn't sure at all if this would work, but no better plan was coming to mind at the moment, and time was of the essence. Dig might be just the move they needed, whether to buy a little time, or for the potential to catch Phantump off guard. Either way, Terri and Zoom were as prepared as they'd ever be to capitalize on either situation.

They just hoped they were prepared enough.

Missingno. Master- With the battle clearly going in the Phantump's favour at this point, you find yourself on the back foot. The figure was looking to capitalise on his Pokemon's advantage, you couldn't allow that to happen. The Phantump fires a glowing seed down at Zoom, however thankfully the distance between the two at this point gives her ample time to react. A fiery fist smacks the seed away before it can take root, a bullet dodged as Zoom needed every ounce of strength at this point.

Undeterred despite you countering its last move, the Phantump floats through the air, dropping explosive Seed Bombs which plummet down towards the ground. Zoom darts around, using her Quick Attack to avoid most of the explosions, however she is hit with some residual damage as she narrowly escapes the blasts. Thankfully with the Phantump occupied with the Seed Bomb, it isn't able to Grass Knot Zoom this time. As the bombs stop dropping, Zoom burrows underground. The Phantump surely couldn't reach her down here and if she could take up enough time, maybe the Trick Room would fade....

"Hiding?" Questions the figure, "I thought you stronger than that. Phantump, force them to the surface, Bulldoze!" Phantump slams into the ground, shaking it with tremendous force that almost knocks you off your feet, again. The Phantump had acted similarly when it was disguised as Torterra, you should have predicted this. Zoom is forced out of her hole, looking beaten and bruised, she didn't have a lot of strength length. With the Phantump hanging close to the ground, this might be the only opportunity she has to land a decisive hit....

Terri and Zoom had their backs to the wall right now. Phantump had robbed the Furret of her most notable advantage, and much as Terri was trying to make it work, this really was messing with their battle style some. But she could not, and would not, let this get them down! Too much was at stake for that to be an option.

Zoom was not a trusting Furret, not by any means. Far too much shit went down in her past- she might have been trusting once, but that ship had sailed, hit an iceberg, sank, and had a movie made about it by now. But however wary and distrustful of humanity overall she'd become, there was one human who had earned her complete, unwavering trust, and that was the human giving her orders right here and now, and so she complied without hesitation. It was this lack of hesitation that mattered morseo now than ever- with how slow Trick Room was making Zoom, she needed all the reaction time she could get. Fire Punch met Leech Seed, the former incinerating the latter. Quick Attack was off like a shot, the Furret taking minimal damage from the blasts. And Dig saw Zoom burrowing underground like only a Furret could. Burrowing was a skill any Furret worth its salt took pride in, and Zoom was no exception.

The thing, however, calmly ordered Phantump to force Zoom to the surface with Bulldoze. Tactics one might expect from the very Torterra this arboreal adversary was once disguised as, Terri realized, but she shook off the realization- if things went the way she was hoping, they'd get the shot they needed.

And indeed, the shaking ground forced Zoom out of the hole she'd dug, having taken significant damage from the move. But as she exchanged looks with Terri, they were both in agreement on one thing- this was their chance.

"Grab it!" Terri exclaimed. "Grab hold and don't let go, Zoom! Fire Punch! Fury Swipes! Slash! Reduce it to toothpicks!!" And Zoom was fucking ready to comply with this one. Maybe even a bit faster than Phantump might anticipate, in fact, if it had taken the time to get acquainted with Zoom's new (lack of) Speed under the Trick Room conditions. Bulldoze was a move that slowed down any struck opponents, but with Trick Room in effect, this would only have the opposite effect, making Zoom a little faster! Fast enough to start pummeling Phantump before it could react? Only time would tell.

Missingno. Master- The Phantump had given you an opening and you were going to take it. The Bulldoze had given Zoom a slight speed boost, not enough to overcome the Trick Room's speed switch, but it was something at least? Zoom rushes the Phantump, grabbing onto it and landing a powerful Fire Punch before it or the figure can react. The Phantump tries desperately to shake Zoom off, but the Furret digs in her claws, she wasn't letting go. She follows with a Fury Swipes, digging her claws into the stiff bark, tearing her opponent apart. But then the figure gives his orders...

"Slip into the shadows, Phantom Force", suddenly the Phantump disappears, leaving Zoom to Slash at thin air as she drops back to the ground. Where was it? She looks around desperately, unsure about where her opponent would attack her from next. "Finish it, Wood Hammer!" The Phantump suddenly appears over head, you can see it but Zoom is looking the wrong way. Before even a word of warning can escape your lips, the Phantump drops like a hammer from plane, slamming her into the ground with tremendous force. Zoom is left lying unconscious in a large indent, while the Phantump clings on despite the recoil of the finishing move.

"One step closer to handing over your soul", the figure smirks, "select your next Pokemon." You were down one Pokemon already, although the Phantump looks close to falling. You needed to swing things in your favour, fast. You notice the Trick Room is beginning to flicker, it would disappear soon, but for now its effect would stand. It was time to choose your next Pokemon.

At Terri's word, Zoom rushed Phantump, dug her claws in, and was not about to let go. Fire Punch- success! Fury Swipes- hitting hard! Sla-

Nope. Phantump used Phantom Force, slipping away into the shadows and making Zoom fall to the ground, Slash missing completely. She looked around warily, though was unconcerned for the most part- Phantom Force was a Ghost move, after all. Terri, on the other hand, was suitably concerned, knowing full well that this detestable being wouldn't have ordered Phantom Force on a Normal-type without good reason. And sure enough, before Terri could so much as utter a singular syllable of warning, Phantump reappeared over Zoom's head and unleashed Wood Hammer! The powerful Grass move was enough to knock the Furret clean out.

Terri did not react to the figure's taunting smirk or remarks about her being one step closer to losing her soul. She would not give this twisted fiend that sort of satisfaction. Instead, she held out the Furret's Poké Ball. "Zoom, undo!" she exclaimed, withdrawing the Long Body Pokémon. "You did really well," she murmured to the ball in her hand. "I'm very proud of you."

Proud of Zoom Terri might be, but right now, she had to think about what to do next. She looked around at her slumbering selections- the Comfey, the Ninetales, and the Bronzor. Immediately her eyes fell on Sunny, but Phantump was on the verge of collapse, having barely held on from the Wood Hammer recoil. Sunny might be overkill at the moment, especially since a few of this thing's other Pokémon that Terri knew of would put the Normal Form Ninetales at significantly less of an advantage than she'd be at here. Besides, Trick Room was still in effect, so Terri had to consider this as well. And with that in mind, she made her next choice- no type advantage on the surface, but it had a few tricks up its figurative sleeve that could be a big help in this battle- that Terri damn well hoped would be a big help in this battle.

"My Bronzor is up next," Terri stated, gesturing to XXXXX. "Lift its trance."

Missingno. Master- Zoom was defeated, despite her best efforts to claw out a victory for you. Still, she'd gotten the Phantump to a point that it was essentially between, a consideration you make when selecting your next Pokemon. You take into consideration the other Pokemon the figure owns as well. You can be sure that if the Phantump is his, than the Lampent along with the Palossand are as well. The Gengar couldn't be forgotten either, that thing seemed quite powerful. You eventually decide that XXXXX is the best option for now, the Bronzor wouldn't have any issue with the Trick Room and should hopefully be able to put the Phantump down before it pulled any more tricks.

"Really?" The figure questions as you select XXXXX, "a Psychic type?" His scepticism is warranted, a Psychic type against a bunch of Ghosts? Surely there was a better option. "Genger, release the Bronzor, this should be easy enough." The Gengar floats forward once more, waking XXXXX with a click of its spectral figures. The Bronzor's big eyes open and it quickly pieces together the situation, courtesy of its analytical mind. It felt slightly shamed that the Gengar had managed to get a jump on it. "Phantump, prepare a Grudge." The Phantump grins as it begins to surround itself in a mass of ghost energy. It seemed that the figure was willing to let his Pokemon fall. "Oh and Phantump, close your eyes." The spectral stump closes its eyes as the figure glares across at you. "You didn't think I'd forget your Bronzor's talent for Hypnosis did you?" He begins to cackle once more, had he caught you out again?

Terri merely smirked as the thing expressed audible skepticism at her choice. Not unreasonably so, either- XXXXX was at something of a type disadvantage, but Terri wasn't worried. She had a few ideas. None of which were hampered by the additional order for Phantump to shut its eyes, either- she knew better than to think he wouldn't try and guard against the very Hypnosis what forced Palossand to lead them there in the first place.

...ANALYSIS COMPLETE, came the Bronzor's mechanical monotone within Terri's mind. MISS TERRI, I APOLOGIZE. I FAILED TO CALCULATE THE PROBABILITY OF THE GENGAR'S AMBUSH, AND WAS THUS UNABLE TO PREVENT THIS PRECARIOUS SITUATION...

Don't worry about it, XXXXX, Terri thought back. None of us saw it coming. But now we have to deal with this. Unfortunately, this means playing this battle by that... that thing's rules.

I CALCULATE A 97% PROBABILITY THAT THE STAKES OF THIS BATTLE ARE INCALCULABLY HIGH, responded the Bronzor. I WILL FIGHT WITH EVERYTHING I'VE GOT.

Terri smiled. I appreciate that. Thank you, she thought. OK- first, I want you to use Imprison. This thing's Pokémon have all been Ghost-types so far, so if we can lock them out of using things like Hypnosis and Shadow Ball, that makes things at least a little better for us. Then, we need to knock out Phantump. Grudge makes things tricky, but thankfully, Zoom made this less tricky than it would've been otherwise.

ANALYZING ZOOM'S ATTACKS... XXXXX mentally droned. PROPOSED FINISHING BLOW INFERRED. REQUESTING PERMISSION TO FOLLOW UP WITH FINISHING MANEUVER 33.

Permission granted, Terri thought. If you need to use the move twice for some reason, then do so. This, she figured, was ideal. Imprison would, as long as XXXXX was in the fight, lock the opposing side out of using any moves it knew. And Finishing Maneuver 33 was, quite simply, the Tackle attack. It was perfect- with Zoom's Foresight still in play, Phantump was susceptible to it, and with everything else this fiend had seeming to be Ghost-types, Terri deemed it extraordinarily unlikely XXXXX would even want to use Tackle against anything else in this high-stakes fight anyway.

Missingno. Master- Despite the problem the mysterious figure had presented you with, you were confident that you already had everything you needed to secure this fight. Zoom had done you a massive favour in Foresighting the Phantump, meaning that XXXXX could use Tackle, a move not crucial moving forward, to take down the Phantump. First however, XXXXX would Imprison the Phantump, preventing it from pulling off any last minute tricks.

The Bronzor sends out a pulse of Psychic energy, preventing any Pokemon from using moves known to it. Now it was time for the Phantump to fall. The Steel type spun forward, slamming into the Phantump with a resounding thump! The Phantump clings on, but XXXXX comes back around, Tackling it into the ground. As it fades from consciousness, the energy surrounding it erupts, consuming XXXXX. The energy drains him physically, his Tackle attack would be far less effective for a while.

The figure recalls Phantump into its ball, but floating out another. Not too much to your surprise, a Lampent bursts from the ball. "Your Bronzor's ability may help shield it from the flames, but you can't escape your weakness to Ghost", the figure cackles, "you also showed your hand in defeating Phantump, I'm afraid your Bronzor won't be pulling anymore tricks like that Imprison. Lampent, Taunt!" The Lampent begins to mock XXXXX waving its appendages around wildly as a dark aura swells around the Bronzor. It finds itself drawn to violent action, its mind isn't its own...

Things went rather smoothly for Terri's plan. XXXXX pulled off Imprison and Tackle very smoothly, and Phantump was knocked out. Each side was down one Pokémon at this point, and very evenly matched at the moment, for the Bronzor had yet to lose so much as a singular hit point.

The being withdrew his Phantump and sent out another infuriatingly familiar face- the Lampent from before, whose false screams of terror tricked Terri into believing Laugh to be trapped within a pivoting pillar of pure pyrotechnic pain. But Terri figured Lampent might be up next. Even with the massive type disadvantage this seemed to in theory give XXXXX, Terri wasn't worried. The Bronzor was better off against fire than others of its type combination could boast thanks to the Heatproof Ability, and while the thing pointed out that it had no protection against its Ghost weakness, Terri felt she'd prepared for that adequately in any case. Shadow Ball was Lampent's best Ghost move, and Imprison's effects lasted for as long as its user was in the fray. And since Shadow Ball was one of XXXXX's moves as well, that cut Lampent off from that option. They had to be careful, though- Terri knew Lampent had other options. At least Lampent couldn't pull the same sort of stunt in retaliation- even if it knew Imprison, obviously that move was blocked as well.

What Lampent could do, however, was Taunt the Bronzor. Terri felt it within the mental link between herself and XXXXX, felt an unnaturally-caused shift in the Bronze Pokémon's inclinations, brought upon by Lampent's mockulatory words and motions.

DESTROY. DESTROY. DESTROY, XXXXX's voice blared in Terri's head. EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 269 INITIATED: ATTACKING MOVES ONLY AGAINST THIS SHITHEAD.

This shift in demeanor was slightly unnerving to Terri. But only slightly- considering the Lampent's earlier trickery, she could very much understand and sympathize with her Bronzor's newfound and fury-driven desire to reduce the Lampent to smoldering cinders. Then let's destroy, Terri thought. XXXXX didn't have much in the way of non-attacking moves anyway, so this only really locked them out of Hypnosis for the time being, and considering the fiend would be expecting that anyway... Terri could live with this, at least for now. Ancient Power, Confusion, and Shadow Ball. Go for it!

AFFIRMATIVE, MISS TERRI.

Missingno. Master- With XXXXX acting out of sorts due to the Taunt, you decide to embrace its new aggressive attitude. The Bronzor taps into an Ancient Power, launching a super effective Rock type attack against the Lampent. The spectre is caught by surprise and forced to endure the hit, waling in pain. XXXXX glows as it feels a rush of energy, it seems it has been rewarded for its aggressive tactics. Thanks to Ancient Power's secondary effect, XXXXX had received a boost to all of its stats, exactly what it needed right now.

"Will-O-Wisp, then strike hard with Hex", spits the shadow as the Lampent prepares to retaliate, sending out a trio of blue flames which quickly converge on the Bronzor. Despite likely being aware that the Bronzor's Heatproof ability would reduce the burn damage, your opponent seems to have a method to his madness. Despite now sporting burns, Bronzor continues its aggressive assault, its eyes lighting up as it launches a confusing wave of Psychic energy. The Lampent suffers through this attack as well, which has quite a bit of sting behind it thanks to XXXXX's boosts. The Lampent turns to aggressive tactics itself now, casting a powerful Hex on the Bronzor, made more powerful by the burns it had just inflicted. XXXXX fights back with a Ghost move of his own, firing off a Shadow Ball that hits its mark without issue. The Lampent was already looking battered, it seemed to pale in comparison to the fight that the Phantump had put up, but why?

XXXXX'S ATTACK ROSE. XXXXX'S DEFENSE ROSE. XXXXX'S SP. ATK ROSE. XXXXX'S SP. DEF ROSE. XXXXX'S SPEED ROSE.

Terri couldn't help but grin as those words were beamed into her brain by the belligerent Bronzor. Ancient Power's coveted side effect had taken place, and XXXXX was stronger, sturdier, and faster than usual, which could only bode well for the rest of this battle.

That said, the fiend called for a strategy Terri admittedly could see coming, but sadly had no real defense against at the time being- Will-O-Wisp followed by Hex, the status condition making the Ghost move even more potent than a Shadow Ball would be. Terri was thankful for that Ancient Power boost being there to soften the blow at least somewhat, as well as XXXXX's Heatproof helping to lessen the damage of he burn itself. These were all good things, Terri reassured herself.

XXXXX fought back, and fought back hard. Confusion landed for solid damage, and Shadow Ball was super effective. Very quickly, it seemed as though they had the upper hand in this fight, and it wasn't hard to see why. Phantump had thrown them all for a loop with that pesky Trick Room, forcing Zoom out of her comfort zone and making her deal with basically a direct counter to her fighting style of choice. But XXXXX was doing way better. Lampent was locked out of potential usage of Shadow Ball and Imprison, XXXXX was locked out of... Imprison (which was already in effect) and Hypnosis (which their adversary already made clear he saw it coming a mile away), and its Tackle was severely powered down... with its enemy being a Ghost-type. Meanwhile, it was perfectly good to use its moves that would be (and have been!) the most effective against Lampent, its Ability was made to help him out with the very status condition it was afflicted with in the first place, and on top of it all, it got the famed all-around stat boost from Ancient Power. XXXXX might have the type disadvantage, but right now, that was looking to be about the only way it was at a disadvantage right now.

Careful, now, Terri thought to herself. Don't get overconfident. Lampent might still have something going for it, maybe a way to weaken my team, or give that bastard's final Pokémon an advantage... gah, but with XXXXX under Taunt, there's no way it can pull off Hypnosis... so I guess we got to go with plan B.

PLEASE IDENTIFY PLAN B, came XXXXX's voice in Terri's head.

Use Confusion, Terri thought back. And give it all you got. Follow it up with another Confusion, and then with Shadow Ball.

AFFIRMATIVE, MISS TERRI.

Missingno. Master- With XXXXX feeling stronger and more aggressive then it has ever felt, you remain wary that the sadistic figure you're facing may be up to something. With the Bronzor locked into attacking, the figure that free reign to pull as many tricks as he liked without worrying about the Psychic type countering them. However, if you continued to wear down the Lampent and perhaps draw some confusion, you might just manage to stop the tricks before they happen.

XXXXX's eyes light up as he prepares to launch another Confusion at the Lampent, hoping it can manage to add the status condition by the same name. However, it seems the figure has figured out your strategy and he quickly barks out counter orders.

"Lampent, set up a Safeguard!" The figure shouts and the Lampent follows orders, a light bursts from it, setting up an aura that would shield its team from status conditions for quite some time. XXXXX's Confusion smacks into the Lampent, pushing it back. The Bronzor quickly follows up with another Confusion, continuing his aggressive assault but any chances of inflicting confusion on the Lampent are lost. Still, the Lampent is taking an absolute battering and its trainer showed no intent on avoid the attacks. Why? XXXXX doesn't really care, he fires a Shadow Ball, just to rub it in. The Super Effective attack does a staggering amount of damage to the Lampent, its flame flickers, almost going out. It was just hanging on.

"Perfect", grins the malicious monster, "now Pain Split!" The Lampent moves quickly, firing a thin beam that links its life-force with that of XXXXX. A large portion of the Bronzor's life force is transferred to the Lampent, levelling the playing field between the two. "Now go on the offensive, put it down with Hex!" It seems that the Lampent now intended to finish XXXXX off, but could the Bronzor land a finishing blow before the Ghost?

Terri might be the youngest of the three Pokémon Trainers who called Sludge Wave Coast home, but she was no dummy. She was certain this cunning, crafty fiend had some sort of trick in store, there must be some reason for Lampent making things seem almost too easy. Alas, with Taunt in effect, there wasn't much she could do about it beyond just hammering away at the sentient light fixture and hoping it went down before its plan could take place.

No such luck. Lampent sent up a Safeguard- the menace had figured out Terri's strategy, and countered it flawlessly. However, that was looking to be a non-issue at this point, with XXXXX's Shadow Ball being close to a finishing blow! Terri was all set to give the final order, when the monstrosity set his plan into motion. Pain Split- of course. Used at the optimal moment, when Lampent was on what had to be its last hit point, suddenly things were evened out, Lampent having taken in a bunch of XXXXX's health for itself.

But Terri's worry about the impact of this technique was shorter lived than a baby Durant in a Heatmor colony. Pain Split evened things out, alright, but only in terms of hit points. XXXXX might be burned, but it had a lot more going for it. Besides the natural stellar defensive capabilities of the Bronzor species, XXXXX also had Heatproof minimizing the impact of the burn, and more importantly, the Ancient Power boost. Stronger. Sturdier. Faster. If Terri acted, and acted now, XXXXX could finish this!

Shadow Ball!! Terri thought urgently. As many times as it takes! EXTINGUISH IT!!!

AFFIRMATIVE, MISS TERRI!

Missingno. Master- Speed was of the essence, the Lampent was going for a finishing blow! Thankfully XXXXX had speed on his side, thanks to that boost from the Ancient Power earlier. He quickly fires off a Shadow Ball, but no before the Lampent casts its final Hex. The Shadow Ball slams into the Lampent, knocking it into the dust, unconscious. Unfortunately the Ghost's Hex still strikes its mark and XXXXX groans as it clings to consciousness. If not for the boost it had received, it likely would have been knocked out. Once the burn kicks in the Bronzor is on its last shred of health, but it had done it, it had claimed an advantage for you, you were now ahead.

The figure shoots a glare at you as a Pokeball floats out to recall the unconscious Lampent. He wasn't pleased. His head twists backwards, much further than it should as he calls for his Gengar. This was certainly going to be a challenge. The spiky purple ghost floats forward, he would finish the Bronzor off, this would be all too easy. "Admirable performance but nothing up until now has mattered really. My other Pokemon pale in comparison to Gengar!" The figure begins to crackle once more, his neck cracks back into place with a sickly crunch.

XXXXX was on the ropes. If he was at full strength his typing would likely give him the upper hand against the Ghost/Poison typed Gengar. Even with his boost, he had little health remaining, it wouldn't take much to bring him down. On the plus side, it appears the Taunt has worn off, as the Bronzor spins to look at you, concerned about the likely outcome....

Terri held her breath as XXXXX fired off its Shadow Ball, for Lampent unleashed a Hex at the same time. The Shadow Ball landed, knocking Lampent clean out, but while the Hex hit XXXXX hard, the Bronzor stayed in the air. Even as the burn took its toll, Heatproof helped soften that blow as well. Between that and the boost from Ancient Power, it all culminated in the Bronzor still being in the fight, even if not by much.

The fiendish figure glared as he withdrew Lampent. He was clearly displeased with how the battle was going. Well, Terri was displeased with how he kidnapped her girlfriend, tried to break Laugh's spirit, and actively threatened Terri's life, so, not so shockingly, her sympathy was limited. And by limited I mean nonexistent.

With a sickening, unnatural twist of his head, the fiend called forth his Gengar. Terri eyed the poisonous specter as it floated forward, as the menace declared it his strongest Pokémon.

XXXXX turned to look at Terri, and the first thing Terri realized was that the Taunt wore off at last. DAMAGE ASSESSMENT COMPLETE, came the Bronzor's telepathic droning. It sounded much more like itself with Taunt having worn off. EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 269 HAS CEASED. STATUS: BURN. REMAINING HIT POINTS ARE ALARMINGLY FEW. STATS: ATK +1; DEF +1; SP. ATK +1; SP. DEF +1; SPEED +1. OPPONENT ANALYZED. GENGAR, THE SHADOW POKéMON. A GHOST AND POISON-TYPE, AND THE EVOLVED FORM OF HAUNTER. GENGAR STEALS HEAT FROM ITS SURROUNDINGS, SO A SUDDEN CHILL IS PROOF ONE IS NEARBY. IT LURKS IN SHADOWS AND WAITS FOR THE CHANCE TO ROB FOES OF THEIR LIFE FORCE. CALCULATED PROBABILITY OF MYSELF EMERGING VICTORIOUS AGAINST OPPOSING GENGAR IN MY CURRENT STATE: 2%.

That's all right, XXXXX, Terri thought reassuringly. Just give it your best. I still have one more Pokémon to use. We just have to make your last moves really count. Now that you can, I want you to try and use Hypnosis. Imprison is still in effect so they can't respond in kind. Follow it up with Psyshock and Shadow Ball.

AFFIRMATIVE, MISS TERRI.

Missingno. Master- With XXXXX back to its normal state of mind, it is little too late as the Bronzor was barely clinging to life, unlike the fresh Gengar that it now faced. Despite this, you encourage the Bronzor to push on, every bit of damage would help at this point. The Bronzor's eyes light up as it prepares its Hypnotic technique, but the figure doesn't seem at all worried....

"Did you forget about the Safeguard?", the figure mocks, "Shadow Sneak!" The Gengar disappears as a shadow streaks across the ground. The Gengar then springs out of the shadow, striking with an incredibly quick blow that sends XXXXX spinning backwards. The Bronzor crashes into the ground, unconscious. The Gengar then proceeds to mock you, dancing around in the air with its broad pink tongue hanging out of its mouth. XXXXX hadn't even managed to get a shot in....

"Last Pokemon Terri, last fight before you become mine", the figure snickers, it was feeling more than confident at this point. Who would you place all of your hopes on? Which of your Pokemon could stand up to the might of this Gengar?! Your life hinged on your next decision, as did the fate of Laugh and the rest of your Pokemon. What would become of them if you fell under the figure's thrall? Would they be left abandoned or would he take them for his own? There was so much at stake here, you couldn't afford a single mistake, a single misstep, you had to be on your absolute a-game. You couldn't help but feel like there was more that the figure had up his sleeve, like he was sitting on a secret and just waiting on an opportune moment to reveal his hand. Could you afford to be cautious at this point though?

Even with XXXXX hanging on by a thread here, Terri had to have faith that the Bronzor could at least contribute to her next Pokémon's victory. Had to believe that Hypnosis would-

The figure's mocking words sent a cold chill down Terri's spine. She'd completely forgotten about Safeguard, of course Hypnosis wasn't gonna work! Of course, that was rendered a moot point regardless, for Gengar lashed out with a Shadow Sneak, landing a swift blow before XXXXX was even able to do anything.

Terri tried her best to not let her arm tremble as she held out the Poké Ball. "XXXXX, undo!" she exclaimed as she withdrew the Bronzor. "You were amazing," she murmured to the ball. "Everything you did won't have been in vain," she promised. Deep down, she wished she felt even just half as confident as that statement made her seem. Gengar was going to be an absolute powerhouse to deal with, and Terri was down to her last Pokémon. To say nothing of the high stakes of this battle- If Terri lost the battle, her soul belonged to this despicable demonic being. And her Pokémon... What would even become of them? Would this fiend abandon them or force them to do his bidding? Neither one sounded particularly ideal! And Laugh... The entire reason this thing was even trying to end Terri in the first place was just so he could break Laugh's spirit and get her to side with him. And even if Laugh didn't break from Terri dying, undoubtedly this... this thing, he would put her through unspeakable torment in the name of trying to break her, and if he didn't do so emotionally, undoubtedly he would do so physically.

Terri was no longer able to hide the trembling, but now the cause was different. No longer fear- no, as she looked back up, shot a glare at the figure, a piercing glare of white hot fury that could make a Mega Gallade flinch, it became evident- Terri wasn't scared, not anymore. The mental reminder of what this thing was doing, was planning to do, to her beloved, it reignited the fiery rage and poured gasoline all over the surrounding area. She would win. For her own sake, for the sake of her Pokémon, for the sake of her girlfriend. She would absolutely destroy this horrible monster. The last thing to occur to him would be how badly he fucked up in trying to mess with them. "My Ninetales," was all Terri said, pointing to Sunny.

Missingno. Master- You reassure XXXXX that its efforts were not in vein, but at this point your thoughts were beginning to drift towards the fate of your Pokemon, most especially Laugh. All this figure wanted to do was break you down so it could take Laugh for itself, there was no way you were letting the Froslass down. As you brood over the possibilities, you feel your fear turn to rage, driven with fiery passion you glare back at the figure, before firmly demanding that the Gengar release Sunny from her slumber. The Ninetales was the best choice you had, she had a solid match up against the Gengar. Neither Pokemon possessed a type advantage, but in Sunny's favour was the fact that while she had Super Effective coverage on the Gengar, there was no way it had anything Super Effective to target her with. She'd still have to deal with the massive bag of tricks the Gengar likely had, but she was in with a shot.

The Gengar clicks its fingers, snapping the Fire type out of its hypnotic trance. The nine tailed fox rises to her feet, shaking the dirt from her fur. She could already sense the importance of the situation, she didn't she away from the Gengar either. She glares at her opponent, waiting for it to make the first move.

"How about we return the favour Gengar?" The figure muses, what was he planning? "Imprison!" Of course, he ordered Imprison.....

The Gengar lets loose a pulse of Psychic energy, blocking access to a number of Sunny's moves. The Ninetales would be unable to use Sludge Wave, Hypnosis, Confuse Ray and Imprison for the duration of the fight. It wasn't an instant win for the Gengar but it would certainly make things more challenging.

"Alright Gengar, now kick things off with a Night Shade!"

"Alright Gengar, now kick things off with a Night Shade!"
Sunny was by no means the best matchup against a Gengar, but right now, she was the best Terri had. And she'd take it, for sure. Not to mention, the Normal Form Ninetales grew up with a Gengar as a teammate, so it was likely she'd actually have even more of an idea what to expect out of the species than some of Terri's other Pokémon. Besides which, Terri's only other options at the moment were Help, who in addition to not being the best battler was also weak to Poison, and Want, who while sporting a type advantage, was weak to the Electric moves that Gengar could so easily learn. And the handful of Ice moves. And Terri was pretty sure those things got Dazzling Gleam as well. But Normal Form Ninetales- Gengar as a species lacked any way to land a super effective hit on a Fire-type. That alone gave Sunny a definite advantage here, and gave Terri ample hope.

Of course the fiend made Imprison his first command. Terri had been briefly considering going for the same, but nope, tables have been turned.

"It's alright," Sunny said to Terri. "All that did was stop Sludge Wave, Hypnosis, Confuse Ray, and my own Imprison. We're hardly at a disadvantage."

Terri nodded in agreement. Besides which, Sunny's Drought was surely bringing some very bright sunlight into the picture by now, this was something they could definitely use to their advantage. "Then let's show them, Sunny!" declared Terri. "Nasty Plot, Ominous Wind, Flamethrower! Do it!"

Missingno. Master- Confident that Sunny possesses the necessary strengths to overcome the Gengar, you provide her with her with her first set of orders. The Ninetales then begins to plot about how she would bring the Gengar down, her special attack rising as Drought conditions take hold, the sunlight strengthening. However, while Sunny is busy plotting, the Gengar gets the first hit in, blasting the Ninetales backwards with a powerful Night Shade. The strength of the attack is a testament to its level and power, Sunny had her work cut out for her.

Thankfully, with her boosted Special Attack, her moves were going to hit with plenty of sting as well. The Ninetales howls as she generates a strengthened Ominous Wind, blowing the Gengar backwards with the Super Effective attack. She isn't as lucky as XXXXX however, not receiving the coveted boost to all of her stats. Speaking of stats, the figure issues more orders, intent on exploiting yours!

"Gengar Psych Up to steal their boost then knock them back down a few pegs with Clear Smog!" The Gengar begins to cackle as it copies Sunny's Nasty Plot boost, making it all the more dangerous. Sunny blasts the ghost with a blistering Flamethrower, making use of both the Drought conditions and Nasty Plot boost to land another powerful hit. Unfortunately it would be the last chance she has to use her boosted special attack as the Gengar exhales a poisonous fog, which not only hits like a truck but neutralises her boost, putting her back to her standard stat levels. Rats! Sure, she'd landed a couple of powerful hits, but so had the Gengar and now it was boosted and she wasn't. Things hadn't started off well.

"Excellent Gengar, now push our advantage", cackles the figure, "Shadow Ball, then follow up with Dark Pulse!"

At first, things looked as though they were going good. Sunny managed to power herself up, land a nice super effective blow, and follow it up with an intense sun-boosted Flamethrower. It was all looking good... until Gengar started getting tricky. Psych Up to copy the Special Attack boost, and Clear Smog to get rid of the original boosts so the Normal Form Ninetales couldn't take advantage of it anymore.

Terri looked on as all this went down, thinking fast. They'd started strong, but so had Gengar and its fiendish Trainer. Sure, Sunny could simply use Nasty Plot again, but as that one Night Shade proved, that would leave her pretty wide open, and considering how much stronger Gengar was now, that seemed like a pretty bad idea. But the sun was still going strong- Sunny's Fire moves would still have a powerful impact. And in hindsight, considering Gengar's Psych Up, perhaps it was a good thing Ominous Wind's stat boosts didn't kick in. Otherwise, Gengar would be packing those boosts, and not Sunny. Not exactly the circumstances one wants to see in a battle where one's soul is at stake.

But! No time to dwell on that- Terri had to fight back, give Gengar as little opportunity as possible to capitalize on the stolen Nasty Plot boost! Hypnosis and Confuse Ray weren't options right now, but there were other ways to stop a Pokémon from attacking! "Sunny, use Extrasensory!" she exclaimed. "Then follow up with back-to-back Flamethrowers!" Even without Nasty Plot backing all this up, Terri was confident that everything else the attacks had going for them, be it type effectiveness, same type attack bonus, weather, all that good stuff, would give them the edge they needed.

Missingno. Master- With Gengar taking full advantage of your last orders, you decide the best course of action is to keep laying on the damage. The longer the battle dragged out, the more time the Gengar would have to make use of the Nasty Plot boost. That wasn't something you could afford. You urge Sunny on, the Ninetales' eyes glow blue as she launches a psychic assault. She prods and plays with the Gengar's senses, generating visible pain from the Poison typed Gengar. Sunny delights in the pain she is causing, the Gengar deserves every bit of it. It isn't long before the Gengar fights back however, it gathers a mass of swarming shadows into a ball and launches it at the Ninetales. Sunny is smashed by the powerful blow, it wasn't super effective but it might as well be with the Gengar's boost behind it.

The pair then go about trading blows, Sunny firing off a sun-boosted Flamethrower while the Gengar returns serve with a staggering Dark Pulse. Both attacks hit their mark, both Pokemon taking considerable hits but there was still plenty of fuel in the tank. Sunny continues to abuse the sunny conditions, gathering more flames before roasting the Gengar with another Flamethrower. "So repetitive", drones the figure, "Gengar, use Spite!" The Gengar cackles as it casts a shroud of ghost energy over the Ninetales. The Fire type's tails droop, a sudden fatigue falling over her due to the Gengar's Spite. In her tired state she would likely struggle to continue going toe to toe with the Gengar, she needed something to go her way.
