The Panama Papers
Arguably biggest news story of the year with over 11,000,000 documents over 2.6 TB of data leaked detailing how wealthy individuals and heads of state around the world are actively involved in a wide circle of money laundering and tax avoidance. It goes without saying this deserves its own thread.
No one from the US has been implicated in these leaks yet, but it is highly suspected they will be the main focus of a second leak on the way soon. First major consequence of the papers leaking - the PM of Iceland has resigned over his involvement in the scandal, just a day after he said he would not. I suppose several thousand people protesting in the streets getting rambunctious changed his mind quickly. China is censoring all discussion of the topic. Other individuals part of the leak include Gaddafi, Bashir Al-Assad, Gianni Infantino, Putin, and Jackie Chan, just to name a very small few. Discuss.

I'm not sure anybody is really shocked. Like the NSA and privacy issues, prior to Snowden, I think it was something we all pretty much knew was going on, but wasn't "official" in any capacity. And that's disturbing when you think about it. |

Pretty much everyone in the top 1% does this. To say "not shocked" is an exaggeration, I'm not even surprised.

It turns out that a global economic system built on exploiting the poor and preserving the power of the rich is evil and corrupt.
How shocking. |

Yes yes it's not a surprise but the fact that this evidence exists now is kind of great and will hopefully lead to ACTUAL THINGS AND PROGRESS COME ON

Yeah I'd like to see some ordinary Russians take on Vladimir Putin. Where even other members of the 1% die mysteriously in the US when they oppose him.

Well I mean as was said by someone else the reason this is news is because that can happen. But in the grand scheme of things nothing will change I think.
No disrespect to Iceland but their PM was incredibly guilty, did a poor job of concealing it and no-one cares about Iceland. Multiple international investigations will find some wrong doing, slap some wrists and everyone will continue about their lives regardless of any potential new regulation. Various people who were really good at avoiding the international legal system's clutches will find themselves attacked by the international legal system. I suspect we'll see a fair few more resignations from various governments and a lot more inquiring into the current crop of rich weeds but a new crop will rise. Global capitalism will continue to shit on basically everyone who isn't a white man from the Western world. |
