Microsoft reveals "IllumiRoom", projecting images on the room around the TV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re1EatGRV0w
I suspect this will be a selling point in the Xbox 720 when they show it off at E3. My first thought: "Looks dumb." My second thought: "Holy shit." It scans the room initially at start up to get a feel for the objects around in order to project a larger image of the game you're playing on the area around the TV. Interesting. |

Sorry, I never hit the HOLY SHIT moment. It still looks dumb.

Seems cool at first, but I'd probably end up regretting getting it since it would suck in actuality. *cough* PSP

Just like with Kinnect, Microsoft assume we all play our consoles in big open-space living areas. This wouldn't work in my shoebox of a bedroom >>;
I don't really get how this works. Is it coming from a projector or something?

I don't really see the point in combining a crisp center with a shitty periphery (even though that's totally how we see the world ). I feel like this is just a poor man's way around the investment in a 120" projector screen and a $1000+ projector like many HD enthusiasts currently have in their man caves.

They've made a projector. Congrats Microsoft.

Not a bad idea. I think it's better than the "3D" 3DS.

I actually wasn't too sold on this until I saw Talon's post. Since the crappy graphics that they're projecting onto your living room are only in your periphery, it really doesn't matter that they're only vague impressions of objects, because that's all that your brain is going to pick them up as anyway.
The cool thing is the way that the perspective works to give you a good 3D environment, without resorting to a full blown multiscreen panorama or 'totally jumping out of the screen at you!' nonsense. I'd say that it probably looks and feels a hell of a lot more impressive if you're the one sitting in front of it, rather than viewing a XBox screen through another screen (Youtube) through another screen (monitor).

Tad late to the party, yes, but I'm excited not for this, but what it shows may be possible.

A projector has been possible for decades. WHY IT WON'T WORK: A) When a gamer is really 'in the zone,' they develop an increased focus and tunnel vision. Anything not on the screen will be ignored. Hell, their own bodily functions might be ignored. No one is going to care that their room corner had an explosion after they shot a barrel and turned away. B) It's not the holodeck.
