Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

From the author of Akagi comes one man's struggle to survive, who must take drastic measures to pay off an ever escalating debt and live to tell about it. Also steal hubcaps from cars.

Usually what I do is download a show and then put off watching it for a while, but this is something that will be downloaded and viewed immediately with each new episode. My only complaint with episode 01 is I wish it spent a little more time on establishing how much of a loser Kaiji is, instead of hurrying to get to the real BUSINESS. I call this the "relaxed" period that you often see in the beginning of anime series and RPGs before shit goes down. People often complain about how "nothing happens" during these, but I actually enjoy them since it establishes how peaceful life was before their world is shattered. At any rate, this show will be badass and you should watch it!

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

What a coincidence. I just got through watching the first episode and was going to babble about it in my suggestion box. Well, I am going to reserve my impressions until the plot gets moving. It doesn't look like it will be as badass as Akagi, but badass nonetheless.

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

As I told BPK in MahjongTime, I also saw Kaiji a while back and even started the Wikipedia article. ^O^;

In any matter, I must say I dislike how this episode rushed into the action, which should have started in episode III in my view. We barely had any background on Kaiji, which was needed. Akagi got his in subsequent episodes, but most of Kaiji's was skipped over. Aside from that, and the CGI water, good start. I look forward to seeing this play out.

Also, BBB, you need to join Ron & Riichi's Mahjong Club and play in MahjongTIme. It'll be a great way to pass the cold winter nights in-between shows. :1

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

Indeed, we had quite an intense match the other day. I took the early lead, but Dopple caused an upset.

You know, that stuff that they talk about in Akagi about "the flow of the game" isn't just a bunch of anime hooey. It really exists! Any gambler can tell you that. Sometimes you get really hot and you just KNOW that the next tile/card you draw will be a good one for you.

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

Every time I watch this show, I can't help but think how badly Akagi would demolish every single person on this boat if he was there instead. It's interesting to see how somebody who isn't a demigod handles these kinds of situations, though.

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

I get the same feeling. But, BPK, Kaiji might surprise you yet.

From my soujourns into researching the manga for the Wikipedia article, I've stumbled across something interesting.

The "boss" of Kaiji is Kazutaka Hyoudou, who is of simmilar bearing to Washizu. But according to some, he's even more insane. We know how tough Akagi had it with Washizu, so imagine pitting Kaiji against that guy!

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

After seeing episode two, I have a feeling that Kaiji will sacrifice those two dudes to stay alive in the place. I mean, he was just knocked into reality about how lethal the place can be. It's nice to see a show where there will be human sacrifices >=D

Oh, and as for the Mahjong club (I know it has been awhile, but I have had no reason to post here other than that), I don't even know how to play it ^_^;.

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

It was very exciting!

I love it when the show unexpectedly gets really intense. Like when the head honcho is calmly explaining the rules of Restricted Rock Paper Scissors, people complain, then he suddenly says, "SHUT UP. I'LL KILL YOU, YOU PIECES OF SHIT."

And when Kaiji grabs Fatts and gives him the lion speech then throws him to the ground.

Also, "SIT YOUR ASS BACK DOWN."

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

Since I'm signed in (see MiscDisc technical difficulties thread), I may as well throw in my two cents. So far, so good. I'm pissed at Wiki, though. :x I went there to see if the article had been spruced up since the last time I checked (after Ep1), and it had been ... and was replete with spoilers about how the show will end. >_< Wtf. When I saw that "terek" was involved in the discussions page, my heart sank even further -- Doppel, have you forsaken us? ;_; I would have hoped that somebody out there who doesn't mind spoilers but has friends who he knows hate spoilers (LIKE YOU!!!) would have been all over that Kaiji article to try and put in spoiler tags and shit; the fact that there were none after you'd already clearly become involved in the page made me sad.

So yeah. I know, like, what's going to happen through Episode-God-Knows-When and I'm fucking pissed. -_-;

(To be specific, I know whether or not either of Kaiji's two partners stay with him through this game, survive, make it off the boat, etc. I have no idea as to the specifics of their actions/fates, simply what those actions/fates are. I also know what happens when Kaiji rechallenges Funai.)

I really like how they made the intro song the rock-heavy song and the ending song is the mellow old-fashioned Japanese dude singing. It's the opposite of Akagi, but it works way, way better imo. The rock song gets you pumped up for the show, and then the mellow song at the end reminds you you're watching a legend. Sure, it was cool to hear the old guy singing at the start of Akagi, but it didn't really get your blood going; and the rock song at the end of Akagi was just annoying as hell. -_-

I'd be all over spoiler-tagging stuff on Wikipedia if the template wasn't being phased out as is. Big Jim's view is that Wikipedia should have "everything you wanted to know...and MORE". By this logic, there shouldn't be censorship or warnings of any kind when it comes to the material - users should browse pages at their own risk.

As you would imagine, I was very anal about this (which I didn't know about until all the spoiler tags from Fate/stay night disappeared overnight) and when I visited the Ever17 article and found the whole story summarized (with all the major plot points explicitly stated) in two paragraphs, I threw a h3llstorm over at the "Project Anime & Manga" centre. Ultimately, though, it was futile because too many of the arsehole admins don't like the tags for some reason, and are using this logic to throw them out.

Comedically, this "un-censorship" allows people to post disgusting pictures of themselves in articles like "vagina" or "porn". Nothing grosses (and makes me laugh) more than going to the "penis" article and getting a face-ful of some guy having an erection, only to look at the source info and see "I, the creator of this work, hereby...". :4

Long story short, if I used the spoiler tag a bot would have appeared and removed them, and if I got into an edit war an admin would appear and start to scream at me. If I fought back, I would risk being banned, which thankfully hasn't happened there yet.

...

I should note, though, that some of the information I put up was wrong, or at least was ambiguous. Furuhata's entry is incorrect, since I misread something on a Japanese site that was talking about him screwing over Kaiji with the original loan. I knew nothing of Andou's betrayal aside from "it happened", which was episode three incidentally.

Methinks the Hunai issue is real, so I will have to apologize for putting it there - I'll be more respectful of putting up info until it gets shown in the anime. Nevertheless, that simply ends the "Ship of Hope, Espoir" arc, Part I. Part II I know nothing about, and Part III is the mahjong arc with Washi...I mean, Kazutaka. It's on-going apparently, and this time around we don't have the benefit of "Ten" to provide us the material for an accurate ending.

As said, I believe the Furuhata spoiler is incorrect, since what I read was referring to him screwing Kaiji with the loan, and the Andou one is only a spoiler for episode three I guess. I'm unsure if the Hunai one is true or not, since I haven't confirmed it with my friend who read the manga, but I think its true, since it would be a very poetic.

Trivia time!

The OP is sung by Hagiwara, who is Kaiji's CV. When I heard him as Kaiji, he was pretty recognizable (in the Steven J. Blum manner) given how distinctive Akagi's voice was. But I totally couldn't tell Hagiwara was signing the OP.

The ED is sung by Hakuryuu, who is Tonegawa's CV. I've noticed that whenever a CV gets a special name, like "Hakuryuu", "Chafurin" and "Kujira" are always rather elderly, distinguished actors with long, famous careers - sadly, the only role Hakuryuu has been credited toward thus far is Kaiji. Impossible, says I, he must have just started using Hakuryuu as his stage-name. But, we don't know his real name either, so...there's no real way to give him the credit he deserves just yet. :/

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

I was too terrified of spoilers to open the Kaiji wikipedia article. It turns out that my paranoia served me well. Like I mentioned before, I refuse to even go to any anime boards except here for that reason. I won't be highlighting any of those lines of tiny text in this thread. I'll tell you that much!

Talon, did you ever find out what happens to Akagi at the end of Ten? We can tell you if you don't know, since it will probably never be translated.

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

IIRC he becomes hospitalized due to some illness and summarily dies from it. But only after having led a long and glorious life in the world of mahjong. Or some such. IIRC he only has a small (but very popular) appearance in the Ten manga which, while Akagi is said to be its prequel, is really more about some younger guy than it is Akagi. Correct? (If not, correct the mistake[s].)

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

Akagi's role in Ten is larger than most people think. He's portrayed as like the "old master" who appears from time to time to give helpful advice. Talon jogged an old memory in BBB's topic, so to use his example, Akagi is like the 3rd Hokage of Ten, with Ten sharing some simmilarites with Naruto in being good natured, clownish street trash with a lot of potential.

Re: Kaiji -Ultimate Survivor-

Cool ... but that still doesn't explain why people are correct in calling Akagi "the prequel to Ten." It's as much a prequel to Ten, I suppose, as the "prequel trilogy" of Star Wars is to the original Star Wars films. It's in no way a prequel like how The Hobbit is considered a prequel to the LotR trilogy.

And quit making me sign on. ¬¬ I'm here only to get the answer I seek to my tech question. *shifty eyes, to quote a certain FBer*

Alright, after giving it some thought, I have decided to take you up on your offer to learn mahjong. Any time I am on and not playing ONE (I will probably be on it for a few weeks) or watching anime, I will gladly play. I have also set up an account, so any time you are unable to reach McSweeny or Suigin, I will most likely be around (If I'm at my computer, I am logged in to UPN. It just might take me an hour to check the posts.)
