You talk funny

I'm so curious about how the Brit blokes would fare using this.

http://spark.rstudio.com/jkatz/dialectquiz/

Lil' ol' me-

The first time I took this, it claimed that my accent/colloquialisms was purely Central Valley with a bit of Washington, but the two times I took it afterward, I'm more Washington.

Got me pretty much, Northeast (but not New England) USA. I'm about an hour away from Allentown PA, and that's the closest city in my top 5, though the other ones are fairly close, all in New Jersey and New York. Not surprised to see it leaned that way instead of towards the Philadelphia area (I'm also like an hour away from there), as I don't have the "youse guys" kind of thing going on.

Fun fact: this kind of survey is how linguist actually collect information about speech data in the US!

I took a class in it last semester. It's super interesting!

I dunno if UPN was the first place I heard about "drive-in liquor stores" or maybe it was one of my baseball blogs, but it appeared here and surprised me. I've never seen one in person even if I know a "Brew-Thru" exists in theory.

We have one of those here, we call it a "growler".

But it's specific to beer and it's a little more walk-up counter than drive-thru.

That said I took the quiz and I apparently speak like a Westerner? Which doesn't surprise me that much because I'm from the North and living in the South, so my dialect is all sorts of messed up.

Interestingly Ann Arbor, MI, a city about 30 minutes from where I was born, was my number 5 most similar result.

Jeri talking about growlers? I never thought I'd see the day.

Also I tried to take it and it crashed three questions in and now it won't load. Says the server's overloaded ;;

Ok it worked after I waited for like 10 minutes. I sound like Western America, apparently, with the darkest red regions in Southern California (lol) and Northern Colorado. Kind of weird considering I've lived in the Midwest my whole life.

#1= Boston
Where I live = suburban Boston

This thing works well. My next two were Lowell and Worcester. U live about midway between the three cities. This works very well.

In my own personal experience if I don't drop obvious dialect fancy (like "hella") folks down South don't know where I'm from. Similarly, it's tough for me to distinguish between my own accent and a Mid-western one.

It identified me as being from Lowell, MA. Providence, RI was #3 (which is where I'm from). While I dodged the "accent" in the sense that I don't drop my Rs and avoid some of the more obvious indications that I'm from RI, I think my manner of speaking is still very much influenced by where I grew up... Especially the fact that I pronounce Mary/merry/marry in three different ways and don't pronounce "aunt" like the insect. XD

Wow, according to this I am most similar to a bunch of California cities, the west in general, and a vaguely penis-shaped swatch of the Dust Bowl.

Problem I noticed with the questions though: when it asks you to use a particular word, many times I wished I could choose multiple choices. There was also one question that I had no answer to, but it made me choose an answer anyways. Something about an easy task, being a bird or something? No idea.

Oh the glory of image sharing sites.

As one can tell, I'm very much a CT kid. Considering I grew and live there...yeah.

That's a golf question. I didn't have an answer for it, either. I also didn't have one for that road off to the side of a highway. I guess it's a "maintenance road" but from what I read initially, I thought "that's the shoulder. "

The site messed up for me a few times. (Crashed once; twice it registered a double-click from my mouse and so skipped from like Q8 to Q10.) I reset each time and finally got in a solid set of 25 questions and answers. Below are (in no particular order) the thirty-three questions I saw and answered.

Spoiler: show
Q1. What do you call the act of covering a house or area in front of a house with toilet paper?
A1. TP'ing

Q2. the hard center of a peach
A2. pit

Q3. What word(s) do you use to address a group of two or more people?
A3. you guys

Q4. What do you call the insect that flies around in the summer and has a rear section that glows in the dark?
A4. I use lightning bug and firefly interchangeably

Q5. What do you call a traffic situation in which several roads meet in a circle and you have to get off at a certain point?
A5. roundabout

Q6. What is your *general* term for the rubber-soled shoes worn in gym class, for athletic activities, etc
A6. sneakers

Q7. a large vehicle that consists of a towing engine attached to one or more semi-trailers to carry freight
A7. semi

Q8. What do you call the night before Halloween?
A8. other

Q9. crayon
A9. umm ... two of the answers are the same to me. I say it cray-ahn, but that's ALSO the same pronunciation to me as cray-awn "rhymes with dawn" is. However, the IPA clues me in that he wants me to answer with ejaː and not ejɒ, so that's what I'll do. cray-ahn it is. ('Cause dawn sounds nothing like the sound ɒ makes!)

Q10. pecan
A10. pi-KAHN

Q11. {What do you call an easy course?} * clicked w/o saving Q first ^^;
A11. blow-off (course)

Q12. {question was not reasked; asked me what I call the thing people make sand castles with or transport water in}
A12. pail and bucket interchangeably

Q13. lawyer
A13. with [ɔj] as in "boy" ("loyer")

Q14. What do you call the little gray creature (that looks like an insect but is actually a crustacean) that rolls up into a ball when you touch it?
A14. roly poly (people here also say pill bug on occasion)

Q15. a thin, flat cake made of batter that is poured onto a hot greased surface and cooked on both sides until brown
A15. pancake

Q16. What do you call the long sandwich that contains cold cuts, lettuce, and so on?
A16. sub

Q17. Would you say "Are you coming with?" as a full sentence, to mean "Are you coming with us?"
A17. no

Q18. What do you say after someone sneezes?
A18. bless you

Q19. What is "the City"?
A19. other (it would mean "as opposed to the country", not any particular city)

Q20. the "c" in "grocery"
A20. s as in "sock"

Q21. the first vowel in "syrup"
A21. [ə] as in "sir"

Q22. trash can / garbage can
A22. trash can

Q23. to climb a tree trunk by holding on with your legs while pulling yourself up with your hands
A23. climb / I have no special word for this (NOTE: some people here might say "shimmy", as I definitely know the word but do not use it personally)

Q24. What term do you use to refer to something that is across both streets from you at an intersection (or diagonally across from you in general)?
A24. catty-corner (NOTE: I never use this, but near about everyone does)

Q25. Do you pronounce "cot" and "caught" the same?
A25. yes

Q26. Do you pronounce the 'T' in 'often'?
A26. no

Q27. What do you call a drive-through liquor store?
A27. I have never heard of such a thing

Q28. the second vowel in "pajamas"
A28. [ć] as in "jam"

Q29. aunt
A29. [ć] as in "ant"

Q30. really
A30. [ɪ] as in "sit" ("rilly")

Q31. a shallow, flat-bottomed pan used for frying, searing, or browning foods
A31. skillet (NOTE: we also say frying pan, but the latter sounds a bit more labored / formal ... but I dunno, I'd say personal usage is like 58:42.)

Q32. How do you pronounce Mary/merry/marry?
A32. all 3 are the same

Q33. Do you say "frosting" or "icing" for the sweet spread one puts on a cake?
A33. both (personal preference is towards icing but we all say both)

Image isn't working. Shame. Anyways, here are my top 5 cities:

Most Similar Cities
Plymouth MA 49.5
Lowell MA 47.9
Providence RI 47.8
Manchester NH 47.6
Boston MA 47.4

It's in NE, which is correct. I lived in Plymouth, Vermont for 7-8 years, and now I live in the general area of Northwest RI, Northeast CT, South/Southeast MA. My mom's whole family has been in RI for like 3 generations, and my dad's family was in ME, so I'm all over New England.

So what I'm getting is...the North East and New England specifically, most of the Deep South have strong regional dialects, whereas the rest of the country is kind of murky neutral without a lot of distinguishing features?

You're forgetting the Wisconsin/Minnesota/Dakota Canadian-esque dialect.

Raised half my life in southern California, other half in Maryland. College in Georgia.

Got some random cities for my top ones, map showed southern California and Maryland dialect though as the strongest.

Accidentally x'd out, can't get my results back, too lazy.
