Remind me to never go to Brazil for sports. This is absolutely terrifying.
Though I would like to know more about what happened in that fist fight. It looks like to me the referee pulled it out in self-defense. We probably won't know now, but it is an interesting piece to the puzzle.

That reminds me the next World Cup (arguably the largest sporting event in the world next to the Olympics) is going to take place in Rio de Janeiro. I'm sure nothing to this caliber would happen there since everyone is usually on their best behavior, but it does make me wonder how they deal with the crazed fans every four years.

Let's try not to allow the actions of a couple dozen individuals in a nation of 193 million to color our view of the entire country. I agree with the tongue-in-cheek observations about how Brazil is to host the World Cup and the Olympics, that's fine, but since no one else has stepped forward yet to say "Guys, guys, don't conflate the stadium mob for the entire country ", I guess I'll have to.
Lest we forget, at Black Friday just this past year, America witnessed people crushed to death by eager Black Friday shoppers. A different kind of horror to being quartered and decapitated, sure, but I'm not so sure it's any less horrific. (Depending on who you ask, it may be even more horrific. At least with the referee it was an act of impassioned revenge by friends and family of the stabbed soccer player. With the trampled holiday shopper, it was money-hungry strangers who bore her no ill simply and who simply cared more about holiday deals than human lives.) So it's not as though we're strangers to mob mentalities bringing out the ugliness in people. Still, rolling my devil's advocacy back a bit, this is still pretty damn crazy. That's why I shared the story in the first place.

I think this kind of thing, though obviously crazy and exceptional, does speak to the problems that Brazil is going to face when it comes time to put on the World Cup and the Olympics. Hell, Rio just broke out in full-on riots a few weeks back over a few cents hike in bus fares. Rio di Janiero is a volatile city and security is a top priority during these kinds of events. If the Brazilian government doesn't shape up and figure out how to clean the city up (and stifle bad press like this that does cause the general populous to think poorly of them), then they're going to have a hell of a time putting on a successful event, especially if they hope to turn a profit that will benefit the city in the long run.

But yeah, not surprising that it's come to that in Brazil. It's likely been a while since something like this happened (and got reported), but still... scary. >_<
