Pokemon GO!
I suppose now's the time to talk about this, considering the beta's been out for a while and been playtested to death.
http://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo You know pretty much everything important already. Your phone becomes a Poke-Locator using its GPS to find and catch Pokemon in the wild. Unfortunately, it seems the designers have decided to indulge in creativity, and the product we all have been waiting for is noticeably not what we were expecting! First of all, social content is way down. The current beta edition does not support battles between friends. This is likely to change, but in general you can probably expect to see a focus on cooperation over competition, with some benefits given to solo play (in case you live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and have no friends). There is also the choice of joining global (and I assume possibly local) "teams" to attack and defend Gyms. Next, and easily the worst thing to happen in a Pokemon game, even worse than Musicals; rather than apply the traditional, time-honored Pokemon fantasy of taking your favorite Pokemon and raising it to be a powerful fighting machine, the developers have opted to follow the "catch 'em all!" route. Because this isn't Pokemon, it's Ingress. In order to evolve Pokemon, you must collect shards through catching other Pokemon of the same species. Your goal is completionism. Oh, and some Pokemon naturally have better potential than others, so that first Pokemon you caught? Yeah, it's shit and you'll have to get rid of it if you want to stay competitive. /r/PokemonGo is fairly heavy with feedback about wanting a personal adventure. Pokemon players don't want to play Ingress: Pokemon Edition, they want to play Pokemon: Ingress Edition. When I was a kid I used to play Pokemon Trainer with my brother and sister using my TCG cards; I raised up an Abra to an Alakazam and he raised up a Growlithe to an Arcanine. I have cute fond memories of running around the house like a little maniac with a pair of spoons and a yellow marker mustache while my younger brother put on tiger pyjamas and scampered around on all fours. If Pokemon Go earns even a dime of my money, it's going to be because it managed to scratch that itch for adventure and excitement. I'm not a collector, I'm a leader, as ridiculous as that sounds, and if I'm going to be the general of my Pokemon army it's not going to be because I hunted down all the best kinds and discarded anyone who wasn't up to standards. I will have my favorites and I will raise them to be the strongest around under my expert guidance; THAT'S the power fantasy I'm looking for, and judging by the comments on /r/pokemongo I'm not the only one who feels this way. Quote:
I personally predict that the game will do well for itself initially, with plenty of downloads, but end up as a total flop when buyers realize that this isn't the product they wanted. We may never see the Pokemon Go that we were promised, as Niantic will probably take this as a "Pokemon fans are dumb and don't understand how geolocation games work" and never try again. Pleeeeease don't fuck this up. Okay, I've blabbered on enough. Discuss your disappointment with Niantic in this thread I guess, as well as the hopes and dreams that they've shattered with this new development.

I mean. I just naturally assumed that this is what the game would end up being like. Some people want to play catch 'em all and that is a totally legitimate thing to make as a product. It is also, quite candidly, much easier to sell to your average person than what you are talking about. This is a phone game.
Rest assured. This will make a shitton of money. |

So. Directly after I posted my ranty whiny bitch post, Niantic released more information in the form of a big leak.
You are now capable of giving your Pokemon nicknames, increasing its CP (which is the built-in potential level, so to speak), and training/evolving it without farming pokemon. It looks like Go! is going to be fun after all This is a huge relief. I was so worried about the future of "real-world Pokemon" after this and I think it'll not only be a success, but a success in the right direction.

When I first heard about the "Catch multiple Pokemon to evolve them" I thought you'd need, say, 3 Squirtles to make a Wartortle, and then 3 Wartortle to make a Blastoise, and I was confused with the "okay, so where do their stats go" thing. Shards is definitely a better idea, and I think mixing levelling with shards would be a good addition as well. So, at level 16, Squirtle needs 10 shards to evolve, but at, say, level 25, it would only need 2 or 3. It would allow people to play the Geolocation game, and it would let people play the Pokemon game. I guess the only issue would be balancing, which is straightforward enough...Right?

Mystic all the way!
And while I know GO isn't officially out here, I'm not the only one in town playing xD There's already a war going on over the 2 gyms in the centre of town. And then there's a gym at the far edge of town, close to my home, which I "own" all by myself with a low-level Zubat for a few days already because just no one under 60 ever goes there.

Yeah, the entirety of my town is basically in one massive turf war between Valor and Mystic.
I have never seen an Instinct Gym in my town, despite having 6. |

What? Don't be like that. Pokémon Go may not be great where you live, but you can always use it on your travels, and you know that they'll update it further with time.
Besides, if you don't get Pokémon Go, you'lll miss out on the chance to discover a corpse and other fun activities. (I was so caught up in assuming that Pokémon Go would be a disgusting corporate jerkoff I didn't even think about what a terrible idea it is in execution) |

I've been getting around a lot more and been walking a lot since GO came out. I've walked roughly 7 miles since the game came out and in all honesty my body feels a lot better.

A conversation with one of my friends pretty much sums up the Pokemon Go experience.

There's a Gym near where I work (not in my range when I'm there, but visible) that's solidly team valor, like me.

However, 5 of them are birds and I know someone who is on the other team and has a Jolteon

So my summer classes have me in downtown Manhattan on the 20th floor.
My GPS has a hard time figuring out where I am so it has me walking everywhere. I hatched around 10 eggs, made 5 levels, and got a shit ton of Pokemon (although the 800cp ivysaur crashed on me rip). Running away seems to happen when you get too far from the Pokemon. I had a lot of stuff run from me during my crazy running around adventures. |

OK, I don't live near any lakes, rivers, or streams, and the Water-types just keep pouring in (bad pun fully intended). I just caught a freaking Dewgong in my own house. And then there's the Seel, the Krabby, the Goldeen, not to mention the Horsea I was informed were in the area, though I never actually encountered any.
