Keith and Bart looked on in astonishment (and the latter in mild annoyance for some reason) as Ethan's Chimchar evolved into Monferno before their eyes. But this wasn't gonna be enough to turn things around, as became apparent very quickly. Monferno had used the opening created by Rags's Wide Guard to strike with Mach Punch, but this seemed to further anger the Slaking, who went to retaliate with Hammer Arm. Rags was quick to block this as well, though it was clear this wasn't about to last.

And Keith knew it, too- he had to go on the offensive, and fast. "Bart! Now's your chance, use Rock Smash!" he called.

"Scraaaaaggy!" Bart exclaimed, landing a forceful, shattering punch to the Slaking's side. This even got it to stop its attack on Rags, to Keith's satisfaction. He and Ethan then ordered Rock Smash simultaneously, both Monferno and Scraggy managing to land more forceful blows. But rather than celebrate this, Keith was more worried about the ominous clouds in the distance, as well as the swirling winds that seemed to be sucking up water out of the ocean. Oh, that couldn't be good.

But things were just as bad inside as well- Slaking's fists were both glowing with explosive energy- a double Dynamic Punch, Keith realized, having seen his own Pokémon use the move (though not two at once, admittedly) before. One for Ethan's Monferno, and one for Keith's Scraggy. "Bart! Block it!" he called desperately.

But Bart didn't even get the chance to try and block anything with his pants- Rags came to their rescue once more, telekinetically containing the explosions. Keith was about to cheer, when the truth became apparent. Rags hadn't simply contained the attacks' energy within spheres of psychic power- he had contained the blasts within his own body, taking both attacks himself to save the Secret Base.

Bart's mouth fell open as the Gallade, who had been such a huge help every step of the way in this fight, collapsed to the ground unconscious. And what was more, Slaking seemed no less determined by the minor setback. Indeed, it seemed more pumped up than ever before, going into a full-blown Uproar. And then, his fists started glowing again- he was trying the Dynamic Punch duo thing again! And this time, with no Gallade to contain the blasts, destruction looked inevitable. Bart looked back at Keith, who said nothing- he was clearly wracking his brains for an idea. A solution, something, anything. He hadn't given up, no, he still had that determined look in his eyes, but at the moment, that didn't mean shit if he was at a loss as to what to do about it.

Bart looked around. The situation looked bleak, almost hopeless. A pair of explosive punches were coming, one directly towards him, the Gallade was down, the whole Secret Base was falling apart more and more by the minute, and a friggin' tornado was forming in the distance. But even as the hopelessness of their situation dawned on the Scraggy, he didn't look anywhere near ready to concede defeat. If this was really the end, Bart wasn't gonna be known as a sniveling coward who spent his last moments sobbing as an enraged Slaking pummeled him. No, Bart was a badass. If his time was up, he was gonna go out swinging.

At first, the additional bright light alarmed Keith- what else could that Slaking be doing?! But then, he realized that unlike the glow on Kong's fists, this glow was a distinctly familiar shade of blue, and also not coming from anywhere on the Slaking. No, the glow was emanating directly from where his Scraggy was standing! "Bart...?" Keith murmured.

"Bart's startin' to evolve!" Meowth exclaimed.

Indeed, at the risk of being accused of copying the Monferno he was fighting alongside, when in reality Bart had been considering the notion before Aiden had actually done it, Bart's glowing form was changing shape, growing taller, the red thing poking out of his head growing into an impressive crest. His tail got longer, his arms got longer. More shed skin built up around his neck, forming what appeared to be a hood of sorts on the back, and despite the grim situation, Keith couldn't help but grin as he beheld the badass Bart had become. "Scrrrraft! Scrafty!" Bart exclaimed defiantly, as Keith held out his Pokédex.

"Scrafty, the Hoodlum Pokémon, and the evolved form of Scraggy," said the Pokédex. "Scrafty travel in violently territorial packs led by whichever Scrafty sports the biggest head crest. It pulls up its shed skin to defend itself when it unleashes its devastatingly powerful kicking attacks."

"Bart, we got this now!" Keith exclaimed- the evolution from Scraggy to Scrafty seemed to have restored the Poison-type Trainer's confidence. "Taunt it to draw in both Dynamic Punches, then evade them with Detect, and finish things up with your High Jump Kick!" Then, Keith grabbed a Poké Ball off his belt, from which emerged a cute Ivysaur. "Pomona, home defense maneuver one-one-five-one-one-three!" he exclaimed. His Pawniard's infamous paranoia was actually paying off- she'd insisted on concocting such maneuvers should Keith's own Secret Base come under attack, or be otherwise in danger. Indeed, Pomona knew exactly what this meant- hard to forget lessons drilled into you by that Pawniard- and focused hard, attempting to build both Reflect and Light Screen all around the Secret Base. Keith hoped this would help fend off the oncoming tornado.

Code:
What? Scraggy is evolving!

...

...

...!

Congratulations! Your Scraggy evolved into Scrafty!

The battle raged on with all three Pokémon giving it their all. 3 evolutions in one day, what were the chances?

Putting that at the back of his mind however, Ethan looked on ahead, grateful for the base owner's Gallade's chivalry in saving Aiden from a devastating blow.

The deafening scream of a man not able to rescue his beloved starter didn't fall on deaf ears, Ethan quickly grabbed a Pokeball from his black jacket and tossed it, calling out another of his Pokémon.

"Togepi, give me a hand darling!"

The ball spiraled before opening, producing a small spiky headed Pokémon, in an egg shell, with small hands trilling happily upon seeing her trainer. "Togepriiiiiii~!" The Fairy Type cried out.

"Serena, use your Telekinesis to bring Gallade to safety by bringing it to it's trainer. Surely, if you can lift a Steelix off of the ground you can manage that?" Ethan said warmly, as the Togepi jumped into the trainer's arms before turning around, trying to focus on it's psychic powers.

While that was happening, Ethan kept on rooting his Pokémon on before giving him his next moves, "Aiden, we're almost there! Give Slaking a Double helping of your fierce Kicks! And while I know it's a risk, give him a taste of two Close Combats back to back!"

Suddenly Ethan could feel the floor shake more than it did when Aiden had low kicked the big ape on it's back. Looking at the big hole in the wall, the trainer could clearly see the storm he had narrowly escaped from at sea was coming right towards them.

If the floor manages to break, we'll be in big trouble... Almost as if his thoughts were being read, a familiar psychic connection from his Togepi rung loud and clear in the trainer's mind...Don't worry, the sweet and innocent voice said, If something like that happens, I'll just use Telekinesis to hold us all up suspended in the air...how long that lasts, I don't know...

"Serena I'm counting on you if the storm proves too much for these old floor boards. And Aiden, let's finish this partner!"

Kitchen:
To complete the evolutional conga-line, the Scraggy joined his foe and ally by similarly growing in size and gaining physical bulk as well as a few appendages. His rooster comb grew into a proper Mohawk while his protective loose sking sagged and extended into a hoodie behind him. His trainer grinned at the sight that stood before him once it finished. A full-grown Scrafty entered the battlefield. Bart leapt so he stood side by side with his fighting ally. Now they were going to finish it.

Ethan had already taken measures to clear the battlefield up a bit and sent his Togepi to collect the Gallade with its Telekinesis. Lucas gave an inaudible thanks to the trainer and recalled his fallen comrade to the safety of his Pokéball. He gave a disapproving sneer as he was now reliant on two other trainers to clean up his own mess. Two trainers who, as Lucas still remembered, broke into his base without permission. They were technically still intruders even though they seemed to have a few good intentions. The trainer in the cowboy hat had sent out his Ivysaur to set up a few Reflect and Light Screens to protect the battlefield from the oncoming storm. Despite not being a Psychic type, the Ivysaur would be able to hold up more than a couple of these for the coming minutes while the battle was continuing.

The Slaking’s fists glowed with energy. To Lucas’ relief, they changed colour to red and yellow; a Fire and Thunder Punch respectively. The threat of a Dynamic Punch wasn’t imminent just yet. The two remaining trainers gave their final orders and charged straight into battle.

Aidan, the Monferno, jumped and raced across the broken floorboard in a wide arc. The newly evolved Bart Taunted the Slaking, forcing it to neglect the fire monkey for a while.

“KKOOOOONNNGGG!!!” The Slaking was enraged at his opponent. He charged straight at the Scrafty who remained calmly in his provocative stance of extending a closed fist. Closed, safe for one finger that sent a very, very definite message. (Hoodlum Pokémon indeed.)

Kong flew his fist of fire into the air. Bart Detected the movement and jumped. Aidan jumped to the Slaking’s side in surprise and gave a swift kick to his opponent. Bart landed on the Slaking’s first arm. Kong sent in his second attack, a Thunder Punch. Again; Bart jumped, Aidan kicked and Bart landed on the Slaking’s second arm, now right in front of his face.

“Scrafty,” it said with determination. He Jumped a third time and sent his lef back. Before the Slaking knew what was going to happene, the Scrafty’s leg glowed menacingly and brighter as it neared his face. With one loud thump, the Scrafty Kicked the Slaking’s face, sending it staggering towards the Monferno who was waiting for him. Aidan’s limbs glowed a blood red and flexed one by one into the falling body of the Slaking. The force of the attack kept the heavy body upright for a moment before the monkey decided it was enough and moved out of the way, allowing the Slaking to fall on his back on the floorboards.

Kong the Slaking is defeated!

The floorboards gave way as if they weren’t there to begin with. Only a loud crack warned the group. Kong’s largely body disappeared below the wood.

“Kong, return,” his trainer ordered, who had held the Pokéball ready.

The Slaking’s body was the final nail in the coffin. Cracks grew from the hole where the Slaking had been and widened across the walls and ceiling. Piece by piece, planks and nails fell with some disappearing in holes that were left from the battle. Despite the Ivysaur’s best effort, the kitchen was going to collapse.

“Get out,” Lucas yelled at everyone. That was about as much warning as he gave the two trainers who had just provided a service. The trainer ignored and rushed past them without even a thank you.

Hallway:
From his bedroom, Lucas could hear the small collection of young Pokémon crying desperate screams of panic. He crossed the main area where the others, amongst which the Duskull and Swirlix from earlier were waiting, towards the screams. “Khan!” the trainer called out to his Kangaskhan, “wh-“

“KANG!” yelled angrily while hitting her trainer across the back of his head, as if to say ‘don’t yell, you’re scaring them’ or ‘what took you so long’ or ‘where have you been’.

By the entrance, Doom, Sterope, Black and a few others were waiting for their trainer. The damage from the kitchen had spread like an infection across the rest of the base, exposing sections of the base to the harsh winds outside. The storm had picked up and the spinning column was climbing its way onto shore by now. In minutes it would hit the base which was in no condition any more to withstand anything. At this point, they were waiting for their trainer so they could abandon ship. Something which they were just considering doing without permission until he raced out of the kitchen.

Lucas recalled the smaller Pokémon and Mrs. Khan back to their Pokéballs. Something which he should have done sooner. Parts of the bedroom had gone missing and all of them were cowering in the one corner that was still left by the time he had arrived. Lucas returned to the entryhall and recalled all the Pokémon there as well except for Black and Mal.

“Aawwk, Black not safe. Pokéball return, pokéball return.”

“As if,” Lucas said, “I need you and Mal to use your soundwaves and call Pearl.”

“Aawwk, you’re an idiot.” And without another word, Black returned himself to the safety of his Pokéball.

He muttered. “Coward.”

“Mal, head for the shore on the other side and use Supersonic to call for Pearl. Let’s hope she can hear you in this storm.”

“Scree!” The Zubat wooshed out a crack in the wall and into the heavy downpour. Hopefully it could manage in the rain despite being a small and fragile Pokémon.

Lucas turned back to his two guests (who had hopefully escaped the collapse of the kitchen). “This is all your fault,” he continued childishly, “if you hadn’t come we wouldn’t be in this mess. Why are you here anyway?” Thunder roared in the distance to signal how much time Lucas didn’t have for this. “How did you get here by the way?” remembering the group still needed to figure out a way out of the storm.

The weather outside was getting worse by the minute, but Bart's evolution had lifted Keith's spirits higher than he could've imagined. All of a sudden, this seemed possible. Not only getting out of this alive, but calming down the Slaking and stopping its furious rampage.

Ethan had sent out his Togepi, in order to move Rags away from the battlefield and out of the line of fire, a gesture Lucas was undoubtedly grateful for as he withdrew the Gallade, even if he now seemed displeased with having to rely on his unexpected visitors to fix the situation.

Slaking's fists started to glow again, only this time with fire and electricity instead of sheer explosive force. Nevertheless, the attacks were still gonna hurt. "Bart! Taunt!" Keith exclaimed.

"Scrrrrafty! Scrafty, Scrafty Scrafty!" Bart called out to the Slaking, his tone of voice most mockulatory. Meowth's eyes widened as he heard exactly what Bart was saying, but he seemed unwilling to provide a translation. The attack, however, had its intended effect- Kong was now focused entirely on Keith's Scrafty, who was now following up the verbal taunt by flipping Kong off.

Kong was now charging straight towards Bart, ready to strike with both fists. "Detect!" Keith ordered. And in true badass fashion, Bart was able to, with picture-perfect timing, evade both punches by deftly jumping onto the Slaking's arms. And then, once both punches had been evaded, Keith knew there was only one way to end this. "All right! Use the High Jump Kick, Bart!" he exclaimed.

"Scrrrrrrafty!!" Bart exclaimed, delivering one last powerful blow, landing his single most powerful attack right into the Slaking's face. A super effective blow if ever there was one! Kong fell backwards, right into the Monferno's Close Combat, which proved to be the straw that broke the Numel's back. Kong fell to the floor, utterly defeated. Satisfied, Bart walked back to Keith and exchanged a high-five with the Poison-type Trainer.

...Except the Slaking hitting the floor, in turn, proved to be the straw that broke the Numel's back in terms of the Secret Base's floor. The floorboards gave way with ominous ease, prompting Lucas to hastily withdraw the Slaking, who this time was unable to resist the recall beam. But the damage had been done- the kitchen was about to collapse, and Ethan's urge for everyone to get out was almost completely unnecessary. Quickly withdrawing his Ivysaur and Scrafty, Keith hauled ass into the other room.

Back in the entrance hall, after withdrawing his Pokémon (except his Zubat, whom he urged to call someone via Supersonic), Lucas rounded on Keith and Ethan, blaming them for what was happening.

"Hey, we wasn't da ones wat dat drove yer Slaking crazy!" Meowth protested, casting a dirty look at Ethan.

"Meowth, cool it," Keith said sternly, as Gemini and Mustard floated to his side. After Lucas asked why they were here, and how they got here in the first place, Keith spoke up immediately- time was running short, they had to get to safety ASAP. "Long story short, I was sailing with my Pokémon. Storm sprang up, swept us way off course, this island was the first land we came across. Saw your Secret Base, decided to try and take shelter until the storm blew over. Thought I heard you tell us the door was open, turned out to be Blackbeard."

"Dat birdbrain ain't changed a bit," Meowth muttered.

"But anyway, my boat, the Banette's Revenge- she's still anchored nearby," Keith added, getting to the point as quickly as possible. "My Dusknoir's on board right now, keeping her safe. Unless either of you have another idea, I'm thinking that boat of mine is our best bet for getting out of this storm with our lives," he stated.

"Weezing weez," nodded Gemini and Mustard in agreement.

The strength and power Monferno displayed was beyond recognition to the curious chimp Aiden was merely a few minutes ago.

Every time Slaking was too distracted Aiden would jump in landing a devastating martial arts blow. Flexing his muscles, he would be able to strengthen his kick, striking the bigger Ape like if it was nothing more than a harmless punching bag! Finishing the job with Keith's newly evolved Scrafty.

The battle ended when the Slaking fell over unconscious to the floor, the trainer couldn't help but cheer, "You go Aiden!" with his Togepi in it's trainer's arm trilling happily too...not really understanding what they were cheering for but that didn't bother her, "Togepriiiii~!"

A few floor boards began to snap, upon impact of the gorilla's heavy weight as Ethan scrabbled backwards to find his footing, with his Monferno leaping across patches of the floor that remained, trying get to where his trainer was to be by his side.

Ethan however was a bit too slow, "Ahh!" and started to fall to the dark pit in the ground, before his Monferno grabbed him by his backpack which clung to the young thief's back. Just before they all tumbled over, Togepi used her Telekinesis right away once she realized it was now or never, lifting them up into the air and moving the three of them to a more stable part of the base.

Monferno leapt into his trainer's arms, it wasn't until now that Ethan could see just how much his Pokémon had grown...but when his Pokémon hugged shouting and pointed to the scene that had just unfolded, as if saying D-did you see what I did! D-did you see what I could do! Ethan could see his Monferno hadn't changed much at all...

Giving Aiden a warm hug and congratulating him on a job well done, Ethan retrieved his Energetic Chimp and his Spiky Eggshell Pokémon back inside their Pokéballs, with much heartfelt thanks.

After the commotion had died down, despite the threat of the Slaking destroying the base. The storm that had caused Ethan to find refugee in the first place, was increasingly turning their safe heaven into a cause for alarm.

The owner yelled back at him and Keith for why they were even there to begin with, blaming them for the way things had turned out and Meowth had finally gotten on Ethan's last nerve. "Look, it doesn't matter. The base was already falling apart to begin with. Even if James hadn't arrived- it wasn't his intention to cause a scene but it's dealt with, so move on." Dropping the argument all together, finding it pointless to keep fighting.

Looking back at the base owner, Ethan said "I was on a boat and now that boat is destroyed. Nothing special about why I came here except looking for a safe place to stay. Which..." He chuckled kinda tired of all the cheap shots everyone was throwing to each other, "Doesn't seem like much of any option anymore." He sighed, "I get why you're angry, and while I can choose some colorful words myself for the way your Pokémon went on to hurt my beloved Gastly, I won't."

Keith soon broke the tension, expressing his ship being their best bet to get off the island, Ethan didn't see a point in disagreeing, though in a storm who knows if running out in an open field would be such a great idea. From where he was standing the rain was pouring so hard it made it difficult to see anything but rain.

Suddenly Ethan got a brilliant idea- or an idea that would surely kill them all. "We need a way to get to shore without getting blown away or separated ," he said grabbing a Pokéball from his jacket, "My Garchomp Jaws can Dig us a tunnel, it's probably the safest way out of here."

OoC: 6 Pokémon declared: Monferno, Jolteon, Jellicent, Gastly, Togepi and Garchomp.

(Once again, I rushed this a bit and I'll correct for tiny mistakes later. Sorry. We're nearing the end though. If either of you have some last pieces you feel the need to address or want to ask my character, let me know and I'll leave an opening for it in the next reply )

Hallway:
Lucas grit his teeth at the two trespassers. He blamed them for Kong’s rage and subsequent destruction of the base.

"Hey, we wasn't da ones wat dat drove yer Slaking crazy!" the Meowth defended himself.

“Why are you here anyway?” Lucas pointed at them angrily

The storm continued raging on. Knowing there was little time left, Keith let out a series of quick sentences to sum up their experience.

“Long story short, I was sailing with my Pokémon. Storm sprang up, swept us way off course, this island was the first land we came across. Saw your Secret Base, decided to try and take shelter until the storm blew over. Thought I heard you tell us the door was open, turned out to be Blackbeard.”

“Blackbeard?”

"Dat birdbrain ain't changed a bit," the Meowth muttered.

’Wait, the Meowth can talk?’ Lucas looked puzzled.

A thunder struck down once more. This time right outside the base’s new opening.

"Look, it doesn't matter,” Ethan yelled at him. “The base was already falling apart to begin with. Even if James hadn't arrived- it wasn't his intention to cause a scene but it's dealt with, so move on."

“Tischk,” Lucas squinted at Ethan. Even if he hadn’t known about Kong’s resentment to the Gastly-line, Lucas didn’t want to let up on his own he had for them.

Ethan continued his explanation.

"I was on a boat and now that boat is destroyed. Nothing special about why I came here except looking for a safe place to stay. Which...Doesn't seem like much of any option anymore. I get why you're angry, and while I can choose some colorful words myself for the way your Pokémon went on to hurt my beloved Gastly, I won't."

“I hurt your Gastly?!” Lucas erupted. He practically jumped on Ethan and grabbed him by the collar, all sense of rationality leaving him. “He was the one who shouldn’t have broken in in the first place.”

Keith mentioned his boat by the shore; The Banette’s Revenge. "My Dusknoir's on board right now, keeping her safe. Unless either of you have another idea, I'm thinking that boat of mine is our best bet for getting out of this storm with our lives,"

Lucas hesitantly let go of Ethan. “Fine. I have a second place we can go to. It’ll be wet but safer than where we are now. We’ll need your boat though to get there.”

"We need a way to get to shore without getting blown away or separated ," Ethan said while plucking a Pokéball from his belt. “My Garchomp Jaws can Dig us a tunnel, it's probably the safest way out of here."

“Humph.” Lucas didn’t say much.

The trio descended the stairs one by one, Lucas leading the way. The Toxic Spikes had mostly disappeared after Keith climbed them. The few that remained had dissipated over time or been blown away by the storm and upstairs battle. Following Lucas were the other two trainers and the Pokémon they had decided to let out.

Outside:
Once downstairs, the storm’s winds hit them like a wall. Leaves and debris were blowing past them, pricking their eyes and making the view of the shore near impossible. Scattered around them lay parts of what used to be Lucas’ kitchen. Shards of the sink or components of the fridge cratered the earth.

“Which way is your boat,” Lucas turned to Keith.

Ethan got out his Garchomp to start on the tunnel. Not a bad idea. The chance of getting lost or even blown away was too big by crossing the field.

The Garchomp started slicing the soil in a rapid fashion. Were he a larger Pokémon like an Onix, he could have left a traversable tunnel. The sand shark Pokémon were more adapt at travelling through the ground rather than tunnelling. Still, it wasn’t impossible. It would just take a bit longer.

The tunnel was tight and the group had to bend down. At times they even had to crawl but they managed. Lucas thought to his own Gible and how he wished he could have helped. He was still childish and barely able to claw through clay on his own, despite being part of the same evolution line as the Garchomp ahead of him. Lucas stubbed his fingers on a sharp rock.

“Crap,” he lifted his hand. The sharp edge had drawn blood. The rock had a weird design though. Lucas picked at it, removing some of the dirt around it and picking it up. The stone shone brilliantly with various colours of the night clouds and moon etched into its sides. The whole rock gleamed a lunar brilliance. The stone shard broke and crumbled into tiny pieces that slipped through his fingers. This gave Lucas an idea. He knew what he was going to do next if he managed to get to safety.

The group made good time. The Garchomp erupted out of the sand, leaving a gaping hole by the shore. The Banette’s Revenge was nearby they hoped. One by one they climbed out.

“So?” Lucas asked, “where’s this boat of yours? Can you get it to work?”

The discussion was heating up, between Meowth's defensive response, and Lucas's... reaction to Ethan's explanation. Thankfully, Keith's idea of using the Banette's Revenge to make their getaway from this doomed island went over rather well with both of the others. Lucas stated he had a second place they could go, which, while wet, was safer than here, something Keith wasn't inclined to argue with in the slightest. Right now he'd consider it safer to be doused in ketchup and thrown into a swarm of Scyther than to stay here. But it was what Ethan said that got Keith's attention. "Wha- Jaws has evolved?" Keith asked, vividly remembering his old friend, the good-hearted yet absent-minded Gible he'd once owned. As they started moving, Keith decided, with the winds being as strong as they were, to withdraw his Weezing, at least for the time being. Meowth, meanwhile, clutched Keith's arm tighter than ever before.

They descended the stairs, and once at the bottom, in spite of the raging winds, Lucas managed to ask Keith which way his boat was. In response Keith pointed off in the direction from which he had approached what used to be a Secret Base in the first place, and Ethan brought out Jaws. Even in the face of this horrible storm, Keith couldn't help but smile as he saw for himself just how much his old Gible had grown. He only wished he'd brought Chance with him, give Ethan a... well, a chance to see just how much his old Squirtle had grown, too. But even if he had, now was far from the time.

The tunnel was a tight squeeze, but they managed. Keith had never traversed a tunnel crafted by Dig before, at least not to his knowledge. He supposed his Scolipede might have been able to make a larger tunnel with Dig, but again, there was the minor problem that he didn't actually have his Scolipede on him.

Once they emerged from the hole, the sea was right nearby. Lucas asked Keith where his boat was, and whether he'd be able to get it to work. Keith nodded confidently- that boat of his had endured weather like this in the past, and come out of it in fine shape. He looked around, and in no time flat, he could see it through the pouring rain, along with the red glow of Peeves's single eye.

"Right there!" Keith shouted over the roaring wind. "There she is- the Banette's Revenge! This way!" He led the way towards the impressive vessel- were it not for its complete lack of masts and sails, it would look more or less exactly like an old sailing ship. Instead, she had a motor, and Keith knew for a fact that they were good on fuel- he made a point of checking and double-checking before every voyage, following the minor setback of her maiden voyage. "Peeves!" Keith shouted as they got close enough. "Set out the plank, we're coming aboard!"

The Dusknoir's faint "Aye aye!" could be just barely heard, but decidedly less faint was the sound of the Dusknoir setting down a large, sturdy wooden plank over the side of the boat, which the three of them could use as a ramp to climb aboard. Peeves watched them carefully, fully prepared to use Psychic if it proved necessary to keep them from falling off or getting blown away.

“I hurt your Gastly?” The Base Owner grabbed Ethan by the collar, “He was the one who shouldn’t have broken in in the first place.”

It took everything Ethan had not to slug the guy in the face, but he knew if he had he’d lose any credibility he had left in Keith and 3 people had a better chance at getting out of this alive, than just 1.

“Let’s just put our differences aside, shall we? If you want to fight after we survive this then…okay, I’m all for it.” Ethan said trying to grab his collar back from the other man but it wasn’t until Keith had mentioned his boat that the other gentleman finally let go…

With everyone agreeing to work together the party descended from the base down the stairs.

“Wha- Jaws has evolved?” Keith remarked reminding the thief that Jaws was once in possession of the Poison Type specialist.

“Yea, Jaws is a mighty Garchomp now,” the young man commented, “He lost his habit of chewing on things but his loyalty to his friends and to me has remained, he has to be the strongest fighter I have in my arsenal. He’s even a dad now to an ungrateful, uncorporative Charmander…I remember trading my ole’ little Squirtle for Jaws, haven’t seen her since you lasted visited me at my ole’ base. How is she and those other rascals I’ve traded to you in the past doing?”

Once outside and as soon as he found out the location in which Keith’s ship was, Ethan took out his Dragonball and called out his Ground/Dragon Type to help them out.

“Gar!” the land shark creature grunted, having rain land on his dry skin, turning towards the ground and began tunneling a hole. With Ethan taking lead and the other two following closely behind, “Hope neither of you are claustrophobic!” The trainer tried cracking a joke, but soon realized it fell flat.

Their underground trip was short, with Garchomp stopping suddenly when his claws seemed to strike stone.

“Gar?”

“If you can’t continue forward, then all that remains is up!”

Grunting in approve, Garchomp looked up before digging upwards. The sweet scent of the ocean air reached them first, as Jaws chipped away at the ground above before small rays of light began to show. Jaws grunted once more to give the all clear and one by one everyone began to climb out.

“Thanks Jaws, now, just leave everything else to us.”

“Gar…”

“What- you don’t want to go back inside your Pokeball?”

The Garchomp shook his head, a worried expression sat on his face.

“It’s going to be okay, I promise. We must believe in what these other trainer’s can do.” Ethan patted his dragon’s head, “Besides, you know Keith, don’t you boy? We can trust him.”

With the assuring feeling that his old master was going to look after his new one, Jaws reluctantly returned back inside his Pokeball.

Careful to walk across the blank, Ethan was the last to board the Banette’s Revenge and as he did, he gleefully asked, “Where to captain?”

The trainer in cowboy hat pointed into the distance, “Right there!”, he shouted through the storm. In the distance the group could make out the small shape of a boat rocking on the shore water, manned by what appeared to be a yellow face painted onto a large grey pot.
The young cowboy master led the rest of the group across the shore, each holding their hands out to cover their eyes. At the back of the line, the other trainer remained in a discussion with his Garchomp who was refusing to abandon his master in this storm.
They called out to a Dusknoir on deck to haul a plank, their voices nearly drowned by the thunder. By the light of the storm Lucas could see the boat in its full glory; the carving, the paint that read ‘Banette’s Revenge’ and the steel engine that would get them out of here.
The grey pot on board the ship obeyed his trainer’s command with an English ’Aye aye!’ and brought out the wooden plank. Lucas didn’t bother to question the idea of a talking ghost - not after seeing the talking Meowth, and not in this storm of all times. One by one they balanced their way across the piece of wood. Lucas slipped and landed on his stomach but got back up to throw himself on board. The last member of their group called back his Garchomp before crossing. “Where to captain?” he asked.
“Just go,” Lucas shouted annoyed, “anywhere but here.” The preparations were quickly made by the trainer and his Pokémon [I’m assuming] and the engine swiftly kicked into gear, tripping Lucas on his back as they sped across the waves. He got back up, ignoring his companions and their judgements, and moved to the very front of the ship.
“Mal!” the trainer called out in the storm. “Mal!” he shouted with a high-toned screech. “MAL!” He kept shouting the same word over and over, calling for his Zubat with different pitches.
After a few tries he walks back up to the others, hoping for some comfort or shelter. “Anything new here?” He wasn’t sure what to expect from them after everything that had happened…

“Any idea what those are?” Lucas said after a while, pointing into the distance where a swarm of fish was chasing them, teeth bared in preparation to tear them apart.
“I don’t think they’re friendly.” Lucas instinctively reached for his belt but realised he had kept nearly all of his Pokémon safe in his backpack. That aside, he realised that he didn’t have a clue which one to bring out, almost none of them could fight in a storm. ’Almost’, Lucas reminded himself, digging into his backpack to call out his Quiet-natured Faust.
“Shadow Punch,” he ordered his Dusclops. The Ghost Pokémon didn’t stir or question the command and simply raised his hand and sent a blur of a fist through the air. By this time the others might have done the same to prepare for the Sharpedo, sending the occasional attack to throw their pursuers off.
A small figure flapped its way hurriedly to the boat, screeching every few feet it got further. ”Mal,” Lucas called out excitedly. “Over here girl, nearly there,” he kept calling.
Zubats were known for being practically blind and Lucas knew this when he had sent her out. “Just hear, more this way, almost.” The black figure fluttered down with sharp movements before landing on her trainer’s shoulder with a large pant. “Good job girl,” he stroked her. “Did you find Pearl?”
In between gasps the Zubat gave a high-noted screech.
“Is she near?”
The Zubat confirmed again.
“Good. Nice job, you deserve some rest,” he retreated her to the safety of her Pokéball.
Behind them still lay the group of Sharpedo chasing them and the giant shadow beneath that surpassed them.
“Retreat Faust, we’re done here,” Lucas called back his Dusclops. “You should hang onto something,” he called to the others, neglecting to mention that their Pokémon would be safer inside their Pokéball. He gripped the railings tightly and waited.
The distance between the group and Sharpedo got greater as waves parted them further and further and one particularly large wave knocked their pursuers back into the horizon. The wave split, and revealed a giant wall rising out of its depth, leaning over the ship. Ahead of them, another wall rose peacefully from the violent waters to meet with the first one, closing the group off from the rain and light.
Darkness surrounded them quickly, and immediately afterwards Lucas’ reason for warning came into effect. On top of the restless sea the ship rocketed sideways and up, flinging of anyone who wasn’t holding on, before rocking back into the opposite direction. The waves continued to do this rocking for a while like a pendulum, and like a pendulum its swaying slowed down with every swing until the ship hull hit something and started skidding to a stop. The last wave washed over them with a small splash and finally receded to their back.
“So,” Lucas voiced chimed in the dark, “any of you know Flash?”
Lucas himself called out his Dusclops from earlier and something named ‘Wattson’ that produced a mechanical cry the moment it came out.
“Wattson.”
The cry kept continuing.
“Wattson.”
The cry got even worse.
“Wattson!”
The sound stopped as if someone had hit the mute button.
“There’s no machine around, calm down, you’re safe here. Now both of you use Flash.”
Everyone’s eyes burned for a moment when the light flashed brightly, before receding back into a soft glow; one red and one plain. The uncoloured one peered around the room and found the ships engine still slightly sputtering.
“MAG-MITE-MAG-MITE-MAG-MITE”
The loud screech sounded throughout the place that reminded one of a microphone being held to close to a speaker. And much like the microphone, the noise reached a crescendo so high-pitched it became inaudible to those that didn’t have sensitive hearing, but nevertheless pained their eardrums. Only Faust stood quietly and undisturbed in his place, fixing his gaze on the Magnemite. Finally, the noise stopped and the Magnemite dropped to the ground with a ploof, switching off its light.
Lucas voice returned from the dark, “Mind turning off the engine?”

Once the group regained its bearings, they gazed around the room in the hopes of finding where they were. (Unless you/your character caught on immediately.) A curtain of thin needles arched across one side to the next, surrounded on all sides by a soft, pinkish foam. The floor, once they disembarked, was slimy, soft and also pink - fleshy.
Once everyone had their full of gazing around and guessing where they were, Lucas spun around to them like a jester about to make an announcement. “Welcome to the inside of Pearl,” he grinned, “my Wailord.
Lucas waited for the information to sink that they were; inside a Wailord’s mouth, during a storm, possibly thousands of miles underwater. It was wet, dark and uncomfortable, and it was a whole lot better than being outside. There was little else to do for them other than head for the nearest island and wait.

[The group passed their time with various activities and exchanging questions. Lucas in particular wanted to ask the cowboy hat man, whom he had now learned to be named Keith, about his Dusknoir and how he achieved to obtain its final stage.]

---

Lucas dropped off the two trainers at the nearest island, and departed with few words; none of which were ‘thanks’ or ‘drop by again some time’. ‘Take care’ was about the best they got as he climbed on top of his Floating Whale to surf away on the calmed ocean. At least he remembered their names (presumably). Lucas wasn’t the best at social contact and it was clear he cared little for it, or, otherwise was very unaware of how little he understood of it.
Lucas was more interested in returning to his base, which by now consisted of nothing but splintered wood and broken furniture, spread around the tree which had effortlessly managed to survive the storm. There wasn’t a chance he was going to repair any of this, the place was a total loss, he would have to rebuild everything from scratch.
The stairs remained unaffected inside the tree trunk, safe for the brush off leaves and twigs. Up on the scaffold of surviving floorboards, Lucas called out all his Pokémon, each of which strained to not drop over the edge as they tried to find themselves a comfortable place to nestle on leftover couch pieces or piles off leaves. The whole group managed to survive an astounding four seconds before they broke into angry bickering, except Lucas’ new Slaking, who having calmed down after his violent outbreak, lied on his side lazily, gazed at his team mates boringly, scratched himself and turned to his other side.
“Now listen up,” Lucas ordered his Pokémon with great control, only the new baby Pokémon showing the faint glimpse of juvenile disobedience. “Our base is destroyed,” he informed them of the obvious, “and we’re going to have to rebuild. All of it.”
“But,” he looked around the group with a cheerful grin, “this gives us the chance to make it even better than before, and bigger, with more rooms, and you can all help decide how we build it.. and…and..”
Lucas kept searching his pockets and not finding something. His eyes fell on the strange flower that stood peacefully amongst the group as he tried to piece a few things together. “That..”

”THIEF!”

Ethan had looked about ready to deck Lucas then and there, but he restrained himself, instead suggesting they set aside their differences, at least until they were safe, which Keith was relieved to hear. They all agreed to work together to get away from this doomed Secret Base.

As they descended the stairs and the subject of Jaws's evolution came up, Ethan explained that not only has the Garchomp become one of his strongest Pokémon, but he was even a father now, too. He also lost his habit of chewing on things, which Keith supposed was for the best- much as he kinda missed having an absent-minded Gible gnawing on his head, he supposed the notion of a Garchomp doing the same, while something of an amusing mental picture, might not be quite as harmless.

Once they were in the tunnel, Keith had the time to answer Ethan's earlier question, the one about all the Pokémon he'd traded to Keith. "Well, Chance is doing really good," Keith explained. "She evolved all the way to Blastoise and is stronger than ever. I'd show you how much she's grown, except she's back at my Secret Base. I get the feeling she might have a thing for my Feraligatr," he added with a slight grin. "And Stewie... well, he's a Shadow Ledian, you can imagine how he's doing," he sighed. "I'm just damn lucky I have that Pawniard of mine, she's a huge help with him. And you know, I think he's started to gain just the slightest bit of respect for me. He still won't obey me half the time, but he seems less reluctant to comply with my orders sometimes, so that's something, I suppose. And Batrach, that Pidove you traded me..." Keith gave a heavy sigh. "Well, she grew up magnificently, became a wonderful Unfezant. She actually helped me take first place in the Breeze Town Pokéringer competition, and together we defeated the reigning champion and his male Unfezant. It was beautiful- I thought we'd lost at one point, but Batrach, she pulled out of the dive, yoinked the ring right out of the male Unfezant's beak, evolved into Unfezant herself, and... y'know, when people say female Unfezant fly better than the males, they ain't kidding," Keith grinned proudly. "I just wish I could say I still had her... a couple of weeks ago, she wasn't doing so well. Nothing serious, medically speaking, she's fine now, but... turns out she wasn't happy being tied down to a Trainer. What she sought was the freedom to explore the world, change directions on a whim, things like that. That's why... she wanted me to release her," he sighed, fishing half of a Poké Ball out of his pocket. "Batrach's got the other half," he explained. "She wears it around her neck. Last I heard, she's doing well. Apparently, her travels have taken her as far as the Unova region." Keith paused for a moment before going into another subject that had been on his mind for the past few weeks.

"Y'know, Ethan," Keith added, "You... have a tendency of releasing Pokémon into the wild if nobody seems to want them right away, don't you? Well... I... Batrach admitted before I released her that had you released her as a Pidove like you were planning, she's sure a Glameow or something would've eaten her within a week. But now she's got the strength to fight off predators, the speed to escape from the predators too srong to fight, and the smarts to know the difference. She didn't have any of that when she first came to my team. Y'know, the Adoption Center is a much less depressing place in this day and age," he said. "The owner's Abomasnow, actually used to belong to me. His name is Jack, and ever since he voluntarily remained at the Adoption Center, he's made it his goal to maintain a happy atmosphere in there. And I've been in there once or twice since then, and I gotta say, he does a good job of it. Not to mention, there's always the possibility of new Trainers coming to Fizzytopia who might be interested... I dunno, just... maybe don't release them just because nobody shows interest immediately?" he suggested. "Give the Adoption Center a chance to find them good homes, y'know? I mean, I myself have adopted a number of Pokémon nobody would've expected to get adopted, so... well, you never know, y'know?"

It was around then that they had reached the end of the tunnel, after which Keith was the one to lead the way, right on board the Banette's Revenge. Ethan asked Keith where too (and made him smile by referring to him as "captain), whereas Lucas just told him to go anywhere but here. "Aye!" Keith nodded. He produced a pair of Poké Balls, calling his Weezing and Scrafty back out. He then proceeded to a surprisingly sturdy tent which had been set up on deck, and sent out his Weedle inside, who immediately started to consult the charts and maps. Then, while the Dusknoir and Scrafty set to work hauling in the anchor, Keith himself made his way to the helm, his Weezing by his side and his Meowth clinging to his shoulder. Once the anchor was up, and the motor was running, Keith turned her hard to port, and the Banette's Revenge was on the move!

Lucas had moved up to the bow, calling out for his Zubat, with no results, before returning to Keith and Ethan, asking if anything was new. Keith exchanged looks with his Dusknoir, whose Foresight attack was helping him out as the ship's lookout. Peeves shook his head, as did Keith. "Nay. Nothing new," Keith reported as he adjusted the ship's steering wheel as needed. "If the two of you want out of the rain, the door to me cabin's right down there," he added, pointing down- directly between the stairs which led up to the stern, there was indeed a door leading to the captain's cabin.

After a while, Lucas pointed out a pack of pursuers on their stern. Keith turned back to look. "Oh, son of a bilge Rattata," he muttered. "I'll be damned if that ain't the same school of Sharpedo from earlier!"

"Dis is bad!" Meowth exclaimed.

Lucas called out his Dusclops at this point, ordering it to use Shadow Punch on the Sharpedo. Getting the idea, Keith turned to his Dusknoir, only to see Peeves already floating his way, and with Hermione in his arms, no less. "I like how you think, Peeves!" Keith nodded his approval. "We've got a school of Sharpedo, on our stern and gaining! Peeves, Focus Blast! Hermione, Meowth, the both of you, use Swift!"

The Dusknoir formed a pale blue sphere of energy between his large hands before launching it at the school of Sharpedo. Meowth and the slightly larger-than-average Weedle simultaneously followed this up with a barrage of star-shaped rays of energy. Together with the efforts of Lucas's Dusclops (and whatever Ethan may have used to assist them), they were driving back the school of Sharpedo. Meanwhile, Lucas's Zubat returned, apparently having located someone named Pearl. Lucas withdrew the Zubat, as well as his Dusclops, before advising the others to hold onto something. Keith was skeptical about this, but grabbed a railing nonetheless. Peeves wrapped his ghostly tail around a railing and held Hermione safe in his arms; Meowth's grip on Keith's arm became tighter than ever, and he also grabbed ahold of Keith's Mega Hat; Bart was holding onto another railing as if for dear life.

And then came the massive walls rising up out of the sea. One off the bow, the other off the stern. The walls engulfed the ship, her captain rendered speechless by such a sight... well, by as much of said sight as he actually got to see, anyway, considering how dark it got very quickly. And then it happened- the reason Lucas told them to hold onto something. The ship lurched violently, she was practically thrown to the side and up. Keith swore loudly in Shuppet language as this happened., but thanks to his death grip on the railing, he was not thrown overboard.

At last, the violent movement subsided. Lucas asked the others if they had anything with Flash, before calling out his Dusclops and Magnemite, the latter of which was starting to make a lot of noise. Taking the hint, Keith turned to his Dusknoir, Meowth, and Weedle. "Meowth, Peeves, Hermione, you heard him. All of you, use Flash!"

Light shone brightly from the Dusknoir's single eye, from the Meowth's charm, and from the Weedle's head stinger. Along with the light emitting from the Dusclops and Magnemite (and whatever Ethan might contribute to this), their surroundings started to become a little more- HOLY MOTHER OF ARCEUS! That Magnemite, as its eye fell on the ship's still-running motor, made an unholy racket. Keith and Meowth slammed their hands (or paws as the case may be) over their ears, a woefully ineffective maneuver. The only thing that stopped the racket was the Magnemite itself, falling to the deck and stopping its Flash. Lucas asked Keith to shut off the engine, which Keith was happy to comply with. After this, they tried to get a feel for their surroundings... a curtain of needle-like objects on one side... and pink all around them? Where the... But before Keith could speculate too much on it, Lucas, now, grinning, announced exactly where they were.

"...We're in a Wailord," Meowth repeated in disbelief. "We's in... a Wailord. Wat even."

"...That's a new one on me," Keith remarked. "I mean, it beats the hell out of that damn storm... assuming Pearl doesn't swallow us," he added. Meowth looked nervous at this, but Keith didn't- he figured Lucas would be nervous if there was anything to be nervous about, but on the contrary, the Trainer seemed mildly amused by the fact that they were riding around inside of his Wailord, if anything.

There was nothing to do at that point but talk to each other, exchanging questions and so forth. One such question Lucas had for Keith was in regards to Peeves. More specifically, how he was able to become a Dusknoir.

"Well, you need something called a Reaper Cloth," Keith explained. "It's this dull purple scrap of fabric, not especially much to look at-"

"That's your opinion," the Dusknoir interjected.

"...but Duskull, Dusclops, and Dusknoir consider it to be beautiful," Keith continued, "so if you find one, Faust will probably show interest in it, so it'll be hard to mistake it. Anyway, what you need to do is trade your Dusclops while it's holding the Reaper Cloth, and you got a Dusknoir. In fact, lemme know if you ever get a Reaper Cloth, I'll be happy to help you evolve Faust," Keith added, preparing to give Lucas his Xtransceiver number.

Eventually, they came to an island, whereupon Pearl released the Trainers, Pokémon, and mercifully intact ship from her cavernous mouth. Lucas said his goodbyes in very few words. "Hey, lemme know if you need any help rebuilding that Secret Base," Keith offered. "My Pokémon and I would be happy to help. Wouldn't be the first time we've built a Secret Base, and we also built the Banette's Revenge there," he added, indicating the ship which had held up magnificently against the monstrous storm.

Once Lucas had Surfed off on the back of his Wailord, Keith turned to Ethan. "So, need a lift?" Keith asked, again gesturing to his ship. "Storm seems to have passed."

“I-I,” Ethan paused, “I never knew my old Pidove felt that way…” he said feeling as though his heart was about to break, “You know Keith- I can’t bring myself to disagree with you on the subject,” why the trainer had pondered the same thing in the last couple of months himself, wondering if he was doing that right thing, “It used to be, that all I ever cared about was trading for profit. Buying low and selling high, when I couldn’t find anyone to trade with- I’d just release the Pokémon. I thought it was better out there for them, better in the wild than inside of a stuffy adoption centre where they’d hold on to hope that someone might come along and take them to a better place…only to be heartbroken in the end. I guess that says more about me than anything else.” Ethan sighed, “After losing my parents I was thrown from orphanage to orphanage. I suffered the pain of rejection, the worst were the caretakers that only cared about their government paychecks and the bullies- they weren’t so bad, they were just afraid of never finding anyone to adopt them. Which the older you got, the more increasingly difficult it became. I didn’t wait long before I ran away; I left and choose my own path.” Ethan paused, his face painted with a harsh realization, “It’s not right for me to force the pain I felt on Pokémon that can have a better future than I.” Ethan smiled, looking at Keith, “I won’t make any promises…even a Kecleon takes time to go invisible but I’ll at least think about what you said.”

Ethan missed most of the excitement, having decided to take refuge in the cabin that Keith allowed passage to. There’s was something on his mind, and he didn’t have much time to decide…it wasn’t until the boat felt like it was being pushed upward that Ethan ran back outside, he didn’t quite comprehend what was happening, all he knew was that the light surrounding them was growing dark...

In the midst of pitch black darkness, to no one’s knowledge Ethan was given a wonderful opportunity to even up the score for the way the Base Owner had harshly treated them. Having his eyes adjust to the darkness so swiftly was almost second nature. Ethan knew it was only a matter of time before everyone called out their Pokémon to help illuminate the space…The thief moved quickly, silently and skillfully across the wet hard wood floors. He’s destination, the pockets of one particular loud mouth that Ethan decided needed to be taught a cruel lesson.

Before the room illuminated with light, Ethan was already standing by the cabin door. The trainer soon producing a Togepi from one of his Pokeballs, “Serena, aid us by providing a brilliant Flash, won’t you?” the ball spun upward as it popped open to reveal…

“Togeprrrrrriiiii~!” the Togepi trilled, before her egg shell body began to glow, along with the other’s Pokémon whose combined efforts gave a blinding flash of light.

It took a few seconds for their eyes to adjust once again, but when they did, the Base Owner explained where they were, the inside mouth of his Wailord. Ethan wasn’t nearly as surprised as Keith and his Meowth had been but he was mildly impressed, “So, Mr.Base Owner, you’re not completely useless!”

He wondered if the ship would do the Whale Pokémon any harm, but Ethan was sure that, as long as they didn’t stay inside too long, the Wailord would have been fine.

With time to discuss, as they awaited their next destination, Ethan remembered all the Pokémon that not only had he traded to Keith but the ones he had traded to him as well.

“Damn that Speedy- Firefly- I mean Stewie, Shadow Pokémon aren’t exactly my forte to train…” Ethan said, “Stewie practically destroyed my base that one time you guys visited. Unfortunately I had to close up shop a few months back, but that’s alright I ended up purchasing a bigger plot of land elsewhere with a bigger base. Now all my Pokémon can roam around freely to do whatever they want. Including Diego, that Frillish you once traded over- he’s even a Jellicent now, he helped me defeat Sean the Water-Type Gym Leader in Cascadia. Diego is still searching for the lost knowledge of the world and Jumango, that Munchlax you got Shadow Ledain for, well, he’s still the same lovable, lazy, eating machine he was born to be haha.” Ethan started chuckling before getting an idea in his head, “You should stop by the new base next time, would be fun, we could battle again. And this time, the battle area is in doors, it has a stunning roof window that opens up for aerial battles and reinforced floors and walls to prevent any damage.”
--
As they made their descend from the mouth of the gigantic whale, the ship entered stable water again, the storm was feeling more like a distant memory now, with every passing wave...

The Owner of the Base promptly stepped off the blank once they reached dry land, giving the trespassers one last bit of attitude, showing them just how grateful he was to the other two trainer’s to the bitter end…What the hell is this guy’s problem… Ethan thought but kept it to himself.

“So, need a lift?” Keith asked, again gesturing to his ship. “Storm seems to have passed.”

“Y-yea, if you don’t mind capn’, we can go and rest at my base same, if you want. It’s a little hidden but just head to the Seaside City and I’ll tell you where to go from there.”

When they finally departed, Ethan was seen smiling from the haul of the ship. The sea air greeting them with its gentle embrace, the sun peeking from the storm clouds as the wind began pushing them forward. They left from their joint crisis, going on with their lives in different directions, parting with the Base Owner, who Ethan still didn’t learn what his name was…still, Ethan gave a chuckle to what his ‘going away present’ was towards that very rude man- it was surely going to surprise him, something or should he say someone that will connect the three trainer’s for the rest of their lives of this fated day…a lovable and deadly, Budew.

[some time ago during the revolution]

Scattered across the tumultuous blanket of the Fizzy oceans lay a plethora of isles and inlands, varying in extreme with no restraint in size, climate or ecology. Adventurers and scientists alike have been mystified by the rich diversity of the region, exploring in depth the unique culture of each island for years, discovering new locations as they went that were more wondrous, more adventurous, and more dangerous than the last. Despite the years of attempts in locating and mapping each island inhabited within the Fizzy Sea, new islands are constantly being discovered by travellers as the ocean landscape shifts restlessly where volcanic eruptions create the new lands while tidal waves wash away the old, underwater currents and tides change drastically by the day – the instruments of fickle weather playing a new tune from moment to moment – and dark and violent storms ceaselessly obscure the most enigmatic of locations.

It is by the delicate play of these hands of nature that newer and smaller islands are uncovered by trainers to use as a base. Islands not much larger than a playing field, too small to sustain any complex ecosystem, provide the perfect locales for young trainers to set up a home in peace and quiet, unperturbed by the outside world. It was by the luck of these hands of nature, after the gross misfortune of having lost his previous base and the map towards Birth Island, that Lucas came across a new island he could call his own. While the storms of the area had subsided, uncovering these new island chains, the threat of the hazardous weather lingered in the atmosphere at all times, evoked by the dark lightning clouds to the west of Lucas’s island, but the west was where they remained.

The island itself was sufficiently suited for differing exercises. It was a stretch of land, twice the size of a football stadium, that started in the south with a stretch of coastal sand and ended with high cliff shores in the north that provided an ominous look-out over the storm-clouds of the horizon. In the centre of the island lay an open field of grass with a small thicket of shrubs and trees on its eastern bounds. It was on the border of this thicket, by the bedrock-roots of the cliffs, that Lucas’s new base was carved into a hollowed out tree whose sheer size was made even more impressive by the fact it had been able to survive on the small island for centuries despite the violent weather that had wracked this region for years. The trees in the area were few but nestled densely together, were low in variety but made up for it in size. The grass field itself was equally uninspiring with flowers only blooming in the area during two months of spring, which even then made for a lacklustre picture of sparse and dull colours that were quickly trampled by the island’s new inhabitants as evident this time when Rags, Lucas’s Gallade, pushed back the monstrous creature with an attack, forcing it to step onto a brown-spotted daisy. The monster itself roared in response at the Gallade before charging in with her razor-sharp axes, Lucas quietly and idly standing on the side of the battle as he eyed the movements and decisions of his two Pokémon in silent contemplation.

More monsters roamed the island, within view of their trainer so they may be reviewed afterwards. A Dusclops, a usually placid creature with temperate behaviour, was now floating with motions of élan as he did his best to weave out of the way of the draconic creature’s maelstrom of fire, a preference of hers.

It flies around spouting flames and scorching fields and mountains, destroying everything with shredding claws and fire.
And enraged Sal was as one moment after another she got blasted with pelting ice in the form of flubbed Blizzards and half-hearted Ice Punches. Even if none of them managed to strike her with deadly aim, the strain of gaining one attack after another without landing any of her own was making her grow impatient. So much so, she made a grievous error when she descended too low and got too up close in a misguided attempt to make her Flamethrower land dead-on. A ploy by her opponent but one she failed to foresee in her incited rage. The Dusclops blew a cold wind from his opening. The Flamethrower, just an Ember when the Salamence’s jaws opened, was blown away by the chilly breeze and tuny crystals of ice latched onto the dragon’s skin. Faust blew even harder as his Brain Freeze attack assaulted the Dragon-type’s very inner organs and chilled her to the bone. As her head ached with cold confusion and her body shivered, Sal crashed hard into the ground, making the earth disgorge its grassy layer.

A third battle was not too distant.
The husky mammoth charged a set of boulders and flung them to her target. Her opponent had charged an attack before and with a Dragon Rush blew through them, striking the giant Pokémon head-on, who defended herself with her tusks of solid ice.

The two clashed with claw and fang, each trying to push the other one over with their strength, the Mamoswine having a clear advantage. The Garchomp switched from Dragon Claw to Fire Fang by engulfing his teeth in flames. The Mamoswine was quick to respond and interrupt, a shimmer of cold blue coating her tusks for an Ice Fang. Hai immediately released her grip on feeling the cold and distanced herself, screeched and charged in with another Dragon Rush. Snowball stomped the ground for an Earthquake but the shark-like Pokémon glided off the floor with ease and continued his assault. The attack landed with an explosion of draconic energy, shovelling the Mamoswine back a good pace before the Garchomp immediately settled in on another Fire Fang and sank his teeth into the Mamoswine’s thick fur. The mammoth gave a cry and collapsed to the ground.

In the far-off distance to the mountainous range, two more contests were being held but Lucas' focus on the ongoing battles was interrupted by the sudden appearance of an alien creature materialising beside him.

His hand rose to showcase his three coloured digits; red, green and yellow. Each finger accompanied his non-musical hymn by lighting up in tandem. The three fingers were gently placed against Lucas' forehead, and in a white flash the world around him disappeared to a sepia-toned scene.

-----

A memory was implanted in Lucas’ mind that slowly began to take form. He was standing in the place of Greycoat, his Beheeyem, now floating gently above the rippling waters of the ocean, not too far off from the island. A giant shade lurked beneath the tranquil waters, darkening as if the leviathan himself was coming up. Lucas - or better said, Greycoat – deftly floated back to make way for the creature. A spark of light thundered below with dull luminescence, and a billowing moan followed. The ocean surface broke in a column of water, and an unidentifiable creature was catapulted high in the air. The Wailord below came up with it, rose further and slammed down into the sea with an explosive wave. The falling water easily wet the Beheeyem and Lucas but remained unperturbed as they followed Pearl’s line of sight towards the tossed blur that was crashing down hard. Sparks of electricity crackled erratically as if lightning was about to descend, but the unmistakable grin of the jovial Amabel came into view with the tendrils of electricity.

A boom of voltage surged in arcs across the gargantuan shape of the Wailord, aided by the saline waters in which she waded. Pearl gave a low moan and sank deeper before turning silent altogether. The Eelektross chortled as she continued her hug, with ow without electricity.

Lucas snapped back to the battle at hand. A few roars emerged not too far off, perpetrated by two Normal-types with differing ideals, as a long-lasting battle was also finally coming to an end. A Slaking pounded his chest in fury before lobbing a lazy throw towards the mother Kangaskhan, managing to swipe away the big wooden ladle she used as weapon. The giant ape shattered the cooking instrument into tiny splinters with a mere twitch of his fingers. The Kangaskhan brutally responded to her opponent's intimidation tactic with an irate roar of her own, and charged a massive white glow on her fists. The little Joey nestled in her pouch was punching the air enthusiastically, cheering for its mother who merely answered his hurrahs by shoving it deeper into the safety of her pouch. The Kangaskhan's fist jetted from her shoulder, squarely striking the Slaking across his bold cheek as he made no effort to evade the attack, and regretted it.

Closer to the island's shore, a blur of black and white zig-zagged across the meadow in a flurry. A zap of lightning struck the ground next to it. It sped off in the opposite direction to avoid. Another zap beside it and he was forced to turn tail yet again. The Absol came to a short stop to take a breath. His eyed rested on the collection of steel bodies up ahead who, in turn, eyed them with all three of their optics.

The three eyes scanned the horizon left and right, keeping track of the swerving body. Locked-On. Zap cannon was initialised. A charge of lewd electricity brewed at the magnetic tips. The blur came close. They readied their fire. Aim was on sight. Ready to shoot. The blur made a surprise leap at them. The Magneton attempted to inch away but a lucky strike from the beast's claw dug into them. The Absol landed gracefully back on the ground. His opponent, did not.

Lucas turned his focus back to his Beheeyem and ordered for the next memory to be implanted. He had prepared a stitch of lazy leisure beforehand, a memory he could thus easily ask to be replaced instead. The Beheeyem nodded with understanding as his fingertips pulsed with multi-colours again. He planted them on his trainer’s forehead once more and worked on transposing one of Lucas’ memory for one of his own.

-----

The next scene was in black and white, taking place amidst the forest’s edge beyond Lucas’ scope. Thankfully, he had sent Greycoat in his stead to keep an eye on the other battles not in his vicinity. The trees would make for excellent cover for most Pokémon, but in this case it served to hinder on of them who relied on methods of running. Soon after the battle had started, the Rapidash burst from the woodland and leapt onto the more open battlefloor of the meadows. A soft pinkish blob shuffled its way uneasily after it, sending a splurge of chocolate goo at her opponent to try and still her in her tracks. The Chocolate Magic missed, creating a puddle of hot fudge on the grass where the Rapidash had been only momentarily.

Whitefloss was excited at the sight of the sticky, sweet substance she could lick up, but was instantly knocked back to her senses as the Rapidash reeled around and pummelled her with a Poison Jab from her horn. With luck from the oozing energy coating her horn, Sterope avoided gluing herself to the Slurpuff’s sticky hide. Floss got back up quickly and fired off a Cholocate Bomb instead. This too was avoided with ease by the fleeting Rapidash who reeled back once more in an arc to give her opponent another jab from her horn. Floss waddled over as quickly as she could to where the Chocolate Bomb had landed, hoping to heal herself from the pieces of candy that erupted from the explosion. She neared the chocolates not too far off but was mercilessly stabbed in the back with a series of [B]Fury Attacks/B]. The Slurpuff succumbed easily to the Rapidash’ attacks.

“Last one,” Lucas said, as he urged his Beheeyem to give him the memory for the last skirmish he was expected to keep an eye on. Instead of providing the full story though, he gave his trainer the abridged ending. The memory wasn’t nearly as correctly implanted either, revealing a scene of hazy colours and blots, though shapes were clearly there and figures were identifiable to a degree.

-----

Atop the cliffs, another battle was being fought, though different to the others. Nestled by a single, lone tree lay a purple shell of a Pokémon, its lazy eyes listlessly scanning the field. He had instructions to keep his ground, and to safeguard the Nugget beside him. They had attempted to pry it off him more than once and failed. It had been minutes since their last attempt and the Forretress was starting to feel drowsy from the lack of excitement. He closed his eyes for a brief moment then startled them awake when a sharp breeze blew past him. He eyed across the rocky outcrops once more. A blur whizzed past him and he instantly erected a Protect, but the shade did not attack and escaped. Feeling the game was afoot again, he charged up a slew of rocks as he had done before, placing them around himself and the three amongst the rubble of broken boulders. They had betrayed themselves, and know the Stealth Rock would catch them if they came close again.

Them. It was two against two in a game of capture the flag. He had the objective of guarding the golden nugget, while theirs was to snitch it away. So far, it was three-nil but the orders were to continue practicing until their opponents had succeeded, or got tired. Ford had wanted to surrender almost immediately, even more so after their first victory, so he could doze off and go back to sleep. His Rash partner however was too eager for the skirmish to give in.

A gentle breeze rolled down, then hardened into a thick slice of air that crumbled his Stealth Rock down to rubble, the pieces now rolling amongst their brethren. That was the blur’s partner. Spikes were his usual game but were, so far, ineffective against his opponents. Perhaps that was why he was pitted against them in the first place. The blur immediately swooped past again. Ford prepared himself to explode if necessary, but went for a straight attack instead, spinning in place to chase the infiltrator with a Gyro Ball. His metal shine had risen but the shadow disappeared before either got a chance at what they aimed. The shape made a surprising U-Turn back. He wasn’t prepared for this. Slow as usual, he had trouble moving himself into position to face the incomer. The shape descended down to the nugget, nearly reaching it, when a bulbous figure descended from the treetop by a vine and spat a volley of Bullet Seeds at his target. The shade stopped, arched and twisted to the side to evade the incoming attack. Both knew the attack wouldn’t have been very effective but both knew that one good shot was needed to hinder the speedy Pokémon and expose it for the next. The figure halted mid-air to reassess her strategy, as her assailant eyed her intensely for her next move.

First Weather Balls, then Firestreams and Razor Leafs, Vines followed by volley after volley of Bullet Seed to keep his attacker at bay. Mal had trouble finding an opening and swooped down and hard before levelling out to crash into the body of the Forretress. The attack did little to damage the leaden Pokémon but he slowly inched his gaze towards her and joined his comrade in firing projectiles to steer her away, preferring Mirror Shots above all else. The Crobat leaned to the side and started circling the area once more. The Victreebell and Forretress veered with her direction, continuing their assault, when-

“Caw! You’re an idiot.”

Ford lost his focus momentarily and fired another shot. The beam of light struck his partner Hood dead on, causing him to lose his grip on the branch he held and come crashing down. It wasn’t enough to knock him out, but it was enough of a distraction that the second attacker swooped in and out near undetected. A few seconds later, the same voice was heard from a nearby boulder and the two protectors scrambled up to witness Blackbeard, a Chatot, proudly holding the nugget in his beak, while the Crobat descended gently beside him, stoically proud her plan succeeded. The Forretress slightly dizzied around in his place, the effect of Chatter still not having worn itself off.

Lucas came back to earth with a slight daze as he witnessed the last strike of his Gallade knocking out the Haxorus. Each battle had now concluded and he called them to gather and rest by the shore, instructing Greycoat to alert the others in the distance by Teleporting. Once each of them had recovered from their wounds, some by help of their partners moves, Lucas gazed at his Pokémon one by one and called for their attention. A Roselia was vigorously tending to a flower Sar had stepped on. After having taken days to nurture the plants and flowers in the area to bring life to the island, she was dismayed at the undoing the battles had caused her efforts. A red Skorupi and Pumpkasaur came to her side and aided her. All of them were the last three of Lucas’ Pokémon but hadn’t received any of their training yet. Too many in one go, he was getting tired of this.

-----

“Alright,” he said, “let’s go over this one by one.”
“Rags,” he let the name hand for a while, “good job. You held back but that was only to train Sar. Sar!” he called to his Haxorus who roared in defiance at his upcoming critiques. “Sar. You have to do more than just attack. You became very predictable and Rags noticed this. He tried to throw off you attacks the same way every time, hoping you’d notice but you didn’t. You allowed for Rags to get in a Swords Dance and Lucky Chant and all you did was continue charging in with attacks. You need to do more than just that. Be clever and try something different if it didn’t work out at first.” The Haxorus merely roared angrily but Lucas kept a stiff lip and ignored his dragon’s antics.
“Sal, the same goes for you. You let your anger get the better of you and Faust took advantage of this. Do you realise now what happened? Your attacks missed because you kept your distance and Faust did nothing but dodge them which made you angry. Because of that, you didn’t notice it when he lured you in for a direct shot. I warned you Faust knew a good many Ice-type attacks but you didn’t listen.” The Salamence gave a groan of fire as a response.
“Hai.”
“Gar-garchomp,” his Garchomp obeyed.
“And Snowball,” the Mamoswine gave a ruffled moan. There’s more to battling than getting an advantage each time. For the better part of your battle you switched between Hail and Sandstorm. Look at the where you battled. The ground is covered in dust and snow and it didn’t end up serving either of you, especially if all you do afterwards is charge straight into battle with attacks. You use an advantage to help a strategy, otherwise give up on it and find something different. Hai, you nearly forgot Snowball was part ice it seems when you got up close. You may have won, but with the way things went that was largely due to luck.”
“Sterope, Whitefloss.” The two gave a nervous whimper each. “Mostly fine. Star, you were amazing but you had to let Floss get in some practice as well. Floss, yu need to work on your aim. I know yur opponent was fast and you aren’t but that’s exactly why you need to improve it.”
“Wattson. You’re probably wondering how Doom managed to knock you out so easily? Did you forget Absol’s Ability? What about the secondary effects of his attacks? He had a big critical hit chance which is why he could afford to wait before striking. You couldn’t however and needed to lock him down quickly. You had him and you could have won. I know Lock-On takes time but you were practically wasting whatever you had. Doom, stop messing around. You could have gotten a strike in much sooner if you tried.”
“Talking about finishing battles off quickly. Amp!” he practically yelled towards the Eelektross swimming beside the Wailord. “I pitted you against Pearl as a starting battle because you’ve never battled before. You had a huge type advantage and could have won hands-down quick and easy. Instead you messed about and played with Pearl while she continued attack after attack. You let yourself get beat up too much before you decided to take the battle seriously and win. It’s great that you’re happy about battling but the next battle might not be so easily as Pearl.”
“Looooord!” The Wailord echoed a pitying coo.
“I’m sorry Pearl, I didn’t mean that you are an easy opponent of course.”
“Loooooord.”
“Kong, too lazy. Khan, ladles can’t be used as weapons. Both of you take battling seriously.” The Kangaskhan protested and wouldn’t hear of it. She needed a lot more training before Lucas could use her in battle. The little Joey in her pouch was obviously holding her back. Despite the youngster wanting to join the excitement of batlting, his mother wouldn’t let him yet.
“Lastly, Ford and Hood. Great work on defending. You did end up losing the fourth time around and that was because you didn’t pay attention to your surroundings and focussed only on Mal. Even then, both of you missed. Mal, you did a great job over there and did most of the work. Black!” Lucas got angry again.
“Caw, you’re an idiot.”
“Don’t give me that. It was easy to tell that Mal did nearly all of the work and planning. You just sat there and watched. You did help out in the end but that was after failing three times. You had a role in your team and you let Mal down before you finally got up to do something.”
“Be-be-be,” Greycoat called for his trainer’s attention.
“Oh right, I nearly forgot about you. Nice work with the memory implants.”
The Beheeyem gave a gratified chime.
“But, there were still a few things wrong. The first memory was brownish in colour and needed a little tweaking. The second had no colour at all and the third was even blurry. Were you getting tired?” The Beheeyem protested the assertion. “Fine then, it means you still have a lot of practice to go through before mastering your new species’ skill.”

He dispersed his team and allowed each of them to go about their day in leisure. They had trained a lot lately and Lucas was starting to become draconic even about their training regiments. Rags had noticed it and Mrs. Khan even protested how he handled his Pokémon. It wasn’t entirely his fault though. He had taken it easy on time too often and too much, but now the uproar that was caused in Fizzytopia had reshaped the land. Bedlam Ridge had all but collapsed in on itself from the waves of crime that came from duelling gangs. They had spent months in isolation on the island, away from most of the tumult. He had not a clue what the world outside of the island was like any more and he feared it might have been in ruin. Retreating safely to his new home was a better call to make for his team, but they couldn’t stay castaways forever.
Perhaps, he thought to himself, they had trained enough and it was time to go out and explore Fizzytopia anew. He was uneasy about the thought but the moment was a long time coming. His Pokémon were getting more restless by the day from being copped up on this island.
Not yet though, not exactly. There was one more thing he had to do for their training. He called for his Magneton and whistled. “Wattson!. Come over here, you and I need to do one other thing.”

Tomorrow. Tomorrow he and Wattson were going to go out and test the waters of Fizzytopia once more.

He landed their boat silently on the eastern coast under the cover of night. Carefully, he took a step out. Pebbles crunched underneath his boots and he stopped momentarily, rebalanced himself and tried again. As little noise as possible.

He tapped the two Pokéballs on his belt instead of calling them out. With an unavoidable pop the Gallade and Lucario emerged. They each took hold of a side and pulled the boat further inland, taking a small pause after each heave to detect their surroundings for any stirring. They felt certain they were alone, and tugged at their dinghy more recklessly. Once they were sure the tide wouldn’t take it anytime soon, they let it be and made a start for their base.

The stones quickly gave way for mud which hardened as they ascended further up the hill, each still doing their best to make as little noise as possible. There was little if any light but they were too cautious to risk a torch so soon. They considered they could see enough for just the short trip ahead. Besides, Lucas had reasoned, stars seem to shine brighter this time of year. Before them lay the waxing moon, crowned atop the tree and illuminating the dirt path between her and them with a sombre hue. On either side they saw the scorched patches in the grass. The years have not yet helped their growth.

The hollowed out frame of their former base lay resolute on the tree branches, intact but worse for wear. Completely serviceable if one replaced the many splintered planks and repaired its interior. They had each only gone in twice the past years. Once to look for them, a second later that same year ‘just to be sure’. The upturned furniture and creaking floor had made them uneasy about setting foot in it again. No need for risking it. They wouldn’t be able to make a quick escape without a Teleport, and after their second visit didn’t turn up anything Lucas just didn’t want to have to look at any of it anymore.

“Luc,” Scraps beckoned for them.

“Gal,” Rags reminded him to be quiet.

Lucas held a finger to his lips at both of them. He approached his Pokémon who sat crouched near a set of claw marks by the entrance. A few of these could be found all over the tree’s bark. There were many more inside.

Scraps however was indicating a few loose planks that had fallen down. These bore the same scars as the others but revealed a soft glow when Lucas held it up to the moonlight at an angle. It was faint. The draconic energy lay embedded in the wood as part of the mark. Lucas understood what his Pokémon was hinting at but he doubted it. It was unlikely this could be seen when not at night, and even then the glow was faint and easily missed. He shook his head at his Pokémon. This was old. There was no need for concern.

Certain they were alone, they become bolder in their actions and dared to speak in hushed tones. The Gallade wandered amongst the wooden fragments. The Lucario tried to assure him there was nobody here, just like the previous years. There was no other aura nearby, none he could detect anyway. The Gallade ignored his partner though. This was part of his ritual. He wasn’t going to stop until he had gone through all of it. Once he was dissatisfied with the lack of any new clues, he double-backed to his group.

Lucas brough out a lighter and three candles. The candles were worn and of different colours. He lit the longest of these, the purple one, first and handed it to the Gallade. He then lit the blue one which had melted almost halfway and handed it to the Lucario. The last was a standard, white dinner candle which had melted almost to it’s base by now. He lit it and kept it for himself. They were standing just a little ways from their base’s entrance, closer to the cliffs. A small mound of rocks were piled here from previous years. The tree’s canopy should still obscure it from the sky. They each placed their candle near the mound and sat down in silence. None of them spoke for quite a while.

The Gallade seemed perfectly fine on the dirt floor and barely moved at all. The Lucario was similarly still but nonetheless shifted in place every so often. Lucas, even if he didn’t realise it, rocked left and right every so often as he thought back to his team. He went over each one of his party members, trying to remember a funny quirk or memorable moment. Doom as the little pup he started out as, Watt who didn’t respond well to mechanical devices - but only if he knew they were there, White who downed everything in chocolate and licked it off, Black who enjoyed the hell out of teasing his team mates, Volt who enjoyed zapping people with his newfound limbs, and so on he went. Each one deserved their own moment to be remembered. To remind Lucas of who they were.

To remind us, that was all, he kept telling himself. This was not a memorial. He was not going to do a memorial. To have a memorial felt like an insult to his team. It was like giving up on them. No, not a memorial, just a soft reminder of who they were looking for. They were going to be found. Lucas promised himself that. ”To remind us,” he whispered to himself.

There was a rumbling roar off in the distance. They each held their breath and stared at the sky with anxious anticipation. It was far, probably on another island, but they held their gaze nonetheless.

There it was again. A bellowing moan like that of a wounded giant. It sounded further away. Rags got up. Scraps followed suit. They all stared at the sky. A full minute had passed. Nothing more was heard. Whatever it was, it was quiet now.

“Probably time to pack up,” Lucas told his Pokémon. The two consented but their faces betrayed dismay. These moments felt important to them and were always cut short, but they understood the risk of staying too long. Each blew out their candle and let the wet wax drip onto the ground. Then, back in the dark of night, they turned away from the moon, away from their base and away from their island. They shoved the boat back into the sea after which Rags and Scraps returned to their Pokéball. Lucas turned to take one last look at the island before leaving.

“Happy New Year to you all. See you next year.”
