Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution

I tried to stay up to watch this earlier today but I couldn't, yet it's here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-rDPdBnBjQ

There's as many opinions on this as there are colours in the rainbow (technically a continuous spectrum but nominally seven):

Mewtwo was my childhood, I'm so stoked!
CGI is cancer, I hope this fails.
Why remake the greatest Pokemon movie? Stupid idea.
Lame Kanto nostalgia cash grab like LGPE
Shudo is credited, this could be the best Pokemon movie.
I love CGI, 2D animation is garbage tier.

etc. etc.

OK I only listed six, but some distinct patterns appear:

Nostalgia v. Anti-Nostalgia
Pro-CGI v. Anti-CGI
M01 lovers v. M01 haters

M01 is possibly the most interesting Pokemon movie. It's a sacred cow to some, a cheesy, incongruous mess to others. It was unfiltered Shudo before he was filtered by cuts to the theatrical release, and then changes made when 4Kids got their hands on it. It was Kunihiko Yuyama's first work, and the first one where he was forced to add CGI (at the behest of 4Kids), which would alter fate and lead to OLM Inc. becoming one of the greatest studios in Japan for both 2D and 3D CGI animation.

I myself liked the movie but thought it had a weird message compared to the series, and I thought Ash's petrification was campy, forced melodrama. This was when I was 11 years old!

Very few people have seen this movie in Japanese, preferring to defer to Dogasu's heavily biased review from a decade+ ago.

So while my gut instinct is to hate on this movie, the very concept of a nostalgia-intended cash grab, the trailer is interesting because it doesn't look cheap at all to me. Yes it has that plastic quality that is very typical of Japanese CGI, reflecting how behind their modeling is, but the background work is still good.

This could be great. It could suck. The last two movies have been great. The original wasn't that good. It is an unknown quantity.

Fushigi desu ne...

The CGI is a a terrible idea, but I'm hoping the move does well.

All I can say is that after the past few movies being legit good a remake comes off as a step down no matter how ya look at it.

It's here.

It looks to be a 1:1 remake of the original, with the "EVOLUTION" part meaning it's in 3D. I've scoured the internet and the response was overwhelmingly negative. I'm disappointed too. I had much higher expectations.

I'm rewatching the original Mewtwo Strikes Back (in Japanese) and it's a mess. It's pretty ridiculous that Dogasu slandered the 4Kids dub when I have access to both, here, and can compare them.

Mewtwo is hopelessly edgy. He comes across less as an introspective god-like being and more like a depressed teenager with a handgun. If this is really rough character is what people have been lusting for over 20 years, I think the general populace is going to receive Evolution about as well as they did Overlord season III.

That is...badly.

I really dun understand the purpose of this movie. Did they feel Gen 1 needed more love in 2019? Why 3D? Why remake a movie? An if its just a scene for scene remake with nothing new thats another "why??" ta throw into the list.
