Well as you can imagine, this is a controversial move. Banks and atms have massive lines in general now and it's a huge hassle to get decent amounts of actual cash. Mobile wallets like Paytm had a huge spurt in popularity. (Also it's B Talon, A would be absolutely ridiculous.)

The thing is that...okay, so most people have little to no sympathy for those who'd hoarded massive amounts of "black money" and are now fucked. There are of course a few loopholes left open but not too many at all. Meanwhile, much of the upper-middle/middle class (cough, that'd be me) use debit/credit cards so it's a huge inconvenience but not generally a massive problem. The issue is with working class people who may or may not have bank accounts, to whom a single 500 rupee note could be very valuable. This move really has hurt people in that general category. Plus the general infrastructure for the move isn't the greatest at all.

All in all, I think it's a genius move but with awful execution.

Fidel Castro died yesterday. Aged 90.

Say what you will about him, he's one of the most legendary figures in the history of communism and Latin America.

Even if you don't believe Trump could lead to the dissolution of the Union, Castro definitely "won" the long fight against the US.

Castro won? Interesting.

In good news for the more liberal minded, far right candidate for Austrian presidency looks set to lose and prominent pro hard Brexiteer and former Tory London mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith ousted in by-election by the Lib Dems.

The first electoral results I remember making me happy in the last year or two tbh.

EDIT the first: On the downside, Italy looks set to vote against their PMs referendum, which is pretty fucking awful for both Italy and the EU at large.

Duterte is a pure psychopath.

Quote:
"And I'd go around in Davao with a motorcycle, with a big bike around, and I would just patrol the streets, looking for trouble also. I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill."
In 2015, he admitted killing at least three men suspected of kidnapping and rape in Davao.

Yeah, I heard of that news already, and I was seriously speechless.
This coming Sunday I'll be in the Philippines again myself for a few weeks, and it'll be interesting to have some discussions about the guy with my fiancée and friends there. I'm pretty sure this kind of news is new for them too, and I'm very curious as to where they stand now regarding their president they voted for.

And I wonder what will happen next too. He admitted to being a cold-blooded murdered, and that surely should have some consequence right? Right? :s

Really good article from NYT about the continued drug-user killings in the Philippines. It's worse than I imagined.

Sooooo apparently the US and Russia have cut diplomatic ties over Syria which is basically the first horrible sign of a possible World War III.

EDIT: (this is obviously a bit alarmist but still)

Will be interesting to see how the incoming administration effects relations, given the dramatically different line Trump has taken towards Russia compared to Obama (and also the high chance that Russia intervened to help him get elected).

I looked all over Reddit's front page, News, and World News subreddits. I looked all through Google's Google News. I even loaded up NPR and scoured their front page, U.S. news section, and World news section.

Nothing.

Where did you hear this from?

That was in October and we haven't had WWIII yet. Not that it's a good thing to have happened but it's nice to know the world is more stable than that.

I saw something similar here. Short version: Kremlin official says all communication between the two countries is frozen. US State Department official says "uh no we're still talking!". Tbh it reads like one side or the other (or possibly both to some extent) is pandering to the constituency at home.

I read about how backward Best Korea's military was (1950's era subs yo) and figured the US would stomp them.

No, apparently not. Missile defensive systems are apparently not good at intercepting ICBMs, and no country with one has had a live field test obviously. So there's a good chance that at rickety Korean ICBM will actually deliver its payload. In fact, I wager it's more likely the warhead goes dud than it is the ICBM fails to reach its target.

Bleh.

Welp

tbh if it weren't for the fact that there is a chance Kim has nuclear capabilities, this would be the same old annual DPRK saber rattling we get every spring. But the outcome for DPRK is usually more food aid to shut them up for another year. I know this is probably wishful thinking, but this whole thing sounds like a miscalculation in Kim's part, which might shut him up when even China cuts him off.

China liked Kim Jong-il, and while still pretty brutal he was a vast improvement over his father to his people and internationally. Jong-un represents a massive rollback in all those areas so it's not surprising he has no friends except Dennis Rodman.

Don't fuck this up France. If you elect Le Pen over Macron I'm going to lose all of my faith in humanity. Permanently.

I haven't been following super duper closely but apparently Marcon has been leading fairly well recently in the polls.

Obviously that doesn't mean much anymore but hey, it's something.

Yep, and Macron's emails have been leaked by 4chan. And because of the media blackout, journalists can't even refute the clearly fake emails on social media. Fun times!

Wikileaks is currently confirming most of it as legit. Uh oh.

Um, Macron came out and said the leak was legit and that his actual emails were released. We didn't really need RussiaLeaks for that.

The problem, of course, being that it's quite easy to sneak in a fake email and claim that it's legit- just like that fake "offshore account" document 4chan tried to pass off as real. Where he forgot to merge the layers before leaking.
