It's World Cup time again

Time for North Americans to pretend they care about soccer for 1 month!

And don't forget to call it "football" to sound more authentic when sucking up to your British friends.

Evidently North Americans' campaign to convince the world they care about "futbal" has succeeded, as the 2022 World Cup will be held in North America.

...

4 years after the Americans failed to qualify

It's probably more about availability and cost than anything else. America is a really good place to hold sporting events since we are kind of sport crazy and hence have a large stadium in any moderately sized town.

Don't have to do well to host and have a good time hosting. I think that's one thing we can do especially well with football where it's clear that we're the small fish in the big pond. For the opposite, see: Brazil hosting 2014.

I have been out of the football loop for a while. Going to have to do a lot of brushing up.

How do you watch in America, though? It looks like Google points to Fox Sports which points to "you gotta have a cable subscription to get through" nonsense. I don't see a super obvious YouTube stream, and imagine the big networks are motivated to have such taken down anyway. Are there any sports media outlets providing free coverage online? ESPN, ESPN2, anyone?

It's true that I ignored Mexico when I said "North America," what I actually meant was Canadians and Americans. At least Americans tend to be more up front about their contempt for soccer, but Canadians are desperate to like it during World Cup time. They just can't come to terms with the fact that soccer is a more boring version of hockey.

I mean it's Russia now, Qatar next time and US/Canada the time after that. It's like FIFA are trying to top themselves in the "let's see how humiliating an early exit can the host country have" stakes.

At this rate they'll pick England next.

I always root for Russia and America and England when WC is on. And parts of Africa. And Ireland.
