Bulbasaur Beginner Trainer Battle: Thrain vs. Balmund

The dust swirled along the arid ground as the winds picked up. This was all there was for mile around but in the distance there was a solid piece of rock that jutted out reaching for the bright sun that shone upon the land. It was this mesa that had been chosen for a trainer battle today. Two intrepid trainers were making their way across the desert fighting against the heat as the approached the arena. The referee stood ready as ever decked out in brown shorts, hiking boots, thin white t-shirt and light cream jacket and a floppy brown hat. She peered through her sun glasses at the pair and waved them over, they looked hot and sweaty from the walk.

"Hey guys, you sure picked a hot day to have this battle eh" She said with a chuckle fanning her flushed skin. "Well I know Balmund is a veteran with these type of battles but lets go over the rules for Thrain, I want to make sure you both stay and safe as possible here today; that goes for your Pokemon too!"
Thrain vs. Balmund
Beginner Trainer Battle (Pokemon from Lv’s 01-25 used only)
1 on 1
72 Hr DQ Period
Arena: Volcanic Mountain's Time Rift Mesa: A large, flat, rocky plateau jutting out of the desert sands. Standing 30 metres above the desert itself and 50m x 60m wide, it's covered with a light layer of sand and rubble. Any Pokémon falling off the side of the mesa could very well sustain serious, if not fatal, injuries.
She allowed them time to prepare themselves whist retrieving a coin from her pocket. She assigned Thrain to Heads and Balmund to Tails and gave it a quick flip: "Tails".
Once she was sure they understood the rules she went through the order of play:
– I need PM’s from both of you including your Pokemon, their stats, any healing items being declared, and your attacks for the first round (I am happy with up to 3 being used per round)
- I will then ref the first round.
- Balmund will then order their attacks for the next round.
- Thrain then orders their attacks.
- I ref the round, and the next round attack orders switch and so on and so forth till we have a winner!
“He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below
He saw everything as far as you can see
And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun
And he lost a friend but kept his memory”

Sand crunched beneath Eric's feet as he approached the referee in the center of the mesa. The sun shone down brightly from above, and sweat had already begun to break out upon his face and neck. After listening to the rules of the battle intently, he wished his opponent good luck, then ran over to his trainer box. Leaning down into his backpack, Eric pulled out his starter's Poké Ball, throwing it up into the air. A flash of light illuminated the surrounding area as a bark split the air. Blaze appeared as the light faded, looking eager and ready to fight.

"Alright, buddy, let's get things rolling here. Start off with a Flamethrower, then show your Strength. Try to push your opponent towards the edge of the mesa if possible! Safeguard yourself only if absolutely necessary; otherwise, Leer."

Personality/Misc. Info: Gullible, innocent, charismatic, clumsy and playful. There is almost no shred of malice in Fa's heart and she easily trusts just about anyone she meets. While noble in all aspects and able to charm anybody with her sheer adorkability, her naiveness also tends to get her into all kinds of trouble. It's almost like she's under the protections of some divine force however, as she always finds herself blessed and saved by an aura of supernatural luck. No matter what happens, it's all ok by the end.

Fa is loved and well-cared by everyone in Balmund's squad. Even Chris has taken a liking to the petite snake, treating her like the little sister she never had, always attempting to corrupt the poor little thing with her naughty thoughts. She also gets along fantasticly with Narsil, her favorite playmate, both of whom share a love and joy for life and soft ground to burrow in. It is Vega however who wtaches over her the most, the Dunsparce's persona being so shockingly similar to his departed sister that it's almost like she was reincarnated in a new body. If there is one creature that can make the stout Arbok smile and laugh, that is Fa.

Bio: Taken from the Adoption Centre. Though Balmund originally intended to adopt another Pokémon instead, he changed his mind after falling in love with Fa's charming personality. Despite acknowledging the possible trauma caused by ditching the unfortunate Tynamo at the very last second in exchange for the Dunsparce, Balmund has never really regreted his decision; a decision which all of his squad unanimously agree was the correct one.

Balmund took to rest his weary feet after finally making his way all atop the mystical plateau. The air was arid and the wind blew strong. Balmund wipes his sweat drenched brow and flashes a smile to the kind and dedicated referee before releasing his little Dunsparce onto the field, the petit snake looking on to the battlefield eagerly as she figured they were out to play again. Oh, what kind of new Pokémon was she about to meet? Whatever it was, she was sure she would definitely make friends with. The games were starting to get a bit too rough lately for some reason though... oh well, as long as one's having fun~

"Good luck, mate! I hope you're ready for this 'cause I do not intend to lose this one." Balmund greeted his opponent with a slightly smug grin. "It's playtime, Fa! Defense Curl before Rolling out. Keep going and build momentum before striking yet again! It'll be just like playing dodgeball, and you're the ball!
Both trainers looked relieved to have finally found their arena and they were quick to take their places in their respective trainer boxes. They shared very few words before their released their Pokemon, for Eric it was his trusted starter Blaze the Growlithe who looked eager for a battle. For Balmund it was his cute and naive Dunsparce called Fa who was interested in the new Pokemon she was about to play with. That interest soon fades as she shudders from the effects of Blaze's Intimidate. Once the referee saw that both trainers and their Pokemon were ready she raised her flag and the battle was underway.

Blaze barks and charges up fire energy into his mouth before breathing out a long thin Flamethrower towards Fa. The little Dunsparce looks unfazed and she Curls up Defensively as the flames wash over her skin. Balmund winces as he sees his Pokemon go up in flames but she charges through the fire and heads towards Blaze with a Rollout. Blaze halts his fire attack to put his head down towards his flaming opponent. He leaps at her with a show of his Strength and both attacks collide sending both flying along the mesa.

Blaze whimpers as the super effective attack deals bad damage to his side and he looks on with horror to see that Fa had rolled off but had not lost any memento. In fact she had turned around was on her way back towards him. He could not see her eyes to Leer at her so just as she was about to strike he erects a Safeguard and she slams into it going flying back and falling out of her ball to land before her trainer. That had hurt her then!

"Nice work, Blaze! Keep it going with an Ember. Hold your ground until the very last second, then jump up into the air as high as possible to dodge its next attack. Come back down with Strength; follow it up with a Bite."

Round 2

Both Pokemon had started off the round hard and fast dealing heavy damage to both sides. Fa had taken the brunt of the damage as Blaze showed he was not to be taken lightly but she showed that she had some tricks up her non-existent sleeves. Balmund wasn't pleased with the use of Safeguard to protect the Growlithe from her attacks and so decides to make him pay. Fa giggles as she begins to Spite Blaze who moans as he feels drained, it was if he had performed that Safeguard again. He stumbles a bit from the energy loss but soon shakes it off and sends a warning Ember Fa's way as a bit of retribution.

The fire wasn't as strong as the last one she had endures she she is quick to move onto her next attack curling up into a ball and Rolling Out towards Blaze. Blaze is prepared however and he springs up to leap above the curled up Fa but his timing is off and she clips his feet sending him sprawling back onto the hard rock ground. He winces as he gets back to his feet having failed miserably at that move and forgoes his Strength since he was no longer in the air to perform it. He turns to see Fa heading back towards him before uncurling ready to Body Slam him. He bares his teeth revealing their sharp points and as she lands on him he sinks his teeth into her side with a Bite sending both Pokemon sprawling down the mesa due to the momentum.

They both come to a stop near the edge and Blaze tries to move but sparks fly off his body as the Paralysis from the Body Slam Kicks in. Fa winces at the teeth marks in her side but looks happy with how the round went overall.

Eric groaned as he saw the effects of a paralysis overtake Blaze. Both combatants looked tired, although Blaze seemed to have taken the brunt of the assault this round.

"Okay, Blaze," Eric called from afar. "We can still do this! Try to aim a Hidden Power (Ice) at the bite marks you made on Fa. Follow it up with a Leer. If they try to knock you off the side of the mesa, Safeguard. Otherwise, do your own best to knock Fa off with Dark Pulse."

Eric gazed on at the coming round intently, hoping that the paralysis would wear off soon.

Balmund couldn't help feeling a bit concerned as both Pokémon got near the mesa's edge, but he tried to not dedicate too much of his attention to that. Too risky, and chances are, the efforts would be all in vain. Rather, it was best to capitalize on the advantage he already had at hand.

"The pup's looking numb with paralysis. Fire a Thunderbolt, now!" He commanded, hoping the electricity would improve his chances even more. "Then trap him in a Rock Tomb! Spite him afterwards."

Round 3

Eric could only groan as he saw how his Pokemon was faring in this battle and they were only 2 rounds in. Blaze was running low on energy and now he was paralysed! Fa was happy at her success but Balmund was concerned by how close to the edge of the mesa the pair had ended up. Eric was similarly concerned but was giving encouragement and support trying to bolster Blazes confidence and get him moving again. Blaze has his orders and he tries to move to perform his Hidden Power but his paralysis holds him tight. Fa takes advantage of his and summoning electrical energy into her body before unleashing a Thunderbolt that shocks Blaze making him shudder in pain feeling the paralysis worsen from the extra electricity.

Blaze gets back to his feet again and this time his eyes aren't restricted by his paralysis and he fixed Fa with a fierce Leer making her gulp in terror preventing her from executing her Rock Tomb. Blaze gives a little sigh of relief at that move working, now could he pull off another? He concentrates hard and is able to move his head enough summon dark purple/pink rings before launching the Dark Pulse towards Fa making her yelp in pain as she slides right towards the edge but she manages to hang on digging her tail into the earth. She grits her teeth and Spites Blaze draining him of even more energy as he begins to regret using that last attack.

"Quickly, Blaze, summon your mightiest Roar to unnerve Fa. Follow with a double dose of Leer. If the Dunsparce still attacks, do your best to dodge it!"

Eric knew that he was gambling with fate here, but he could think of no other way to successfully attack in Blaze's paralyzed state without wasting energy.

Round 4

Balmund's strategy was clear, to make Blaze run out of energy and fast, that and to try and get the Growlithe off the edge of the mesa. Growlithe was just trying to hang on and move enough to be able to attack back and make Fa think twice. Fa is quick to move away from the edge by leaping into a Rollout and spinning away to a safer spot. Blaze isn't inhibited enough that he can't Roar making Fa falter and fall out of her Rollout skidding along the ground. She gets back onto her belly and starts to charge up a Thunderbolt when she caught sight of Blaze's fierce Leer and she thinks back to the terrifying roar he gave and she shuddered with fear feeling her defences drop. Blaze grinds at his success and plans on sealing the deal making sure that Fa makes no moves this round when his body locks up his eyes closed shut and he whimpers in annoyance. Fa shakes off the effects of the Leer and remembers that she was a big strong snake and she was winning this battle! She starts slithering towards Blaze and leaps up in the air coming back down on his body with a Body Slam but doesn't manage to push him off the edge, now both Pokemon were too close to comfort once again.

"Give Fa the nastiest Leer you can manage," Eric shouted. "Then gather your last remnants of Strength to push her off the cliff. I know you can do this, Blaze!"

Tension filled the air as Eric finished ordering his commands. He prayed that the paralysis wouldn't have an effect this round, shouting encouragements to the Growlithe from afar.

Round 5

Balmund was extremely comfortable that he and Fa had this battle in the bag now whilst Eric was desperately praying he could pull out a surprise win. Balmund was so confident that when Blaze was ordered to perform a Leer he didn't even have Fa dodge it. Blaze's muscles were loosening right up now and he didn't have a problem pulling off the move. Fa was again caught by the scary red eyes that lowered her defences and left her too startled to move. Blaze moved his feet tentatively before racing towards Fa with a show of Strength pushing her right towards the edge of the mesa. She senses the danger and squeaked in alarm. Again she dug her tail in and with increased energy levels was able to hold on.

She stared the Growlithe down whilst sparking all over before unleashing a Thunderbolt that has Blaze howling in pain. Fa grins before her tail begins to spin rapidly white energy forming around it and it elongated. She leaps up and rams the Horn Drill deep into Blaze's side making his eyes bulge out before he collapses falling off the edge of the mesa unconscious. Eric nearly has a heart attack but the referee whistles and a large Onix rises up with Blaze on its head. She thanks the wild rock snake for its help as it deposits Blaze by Eric's feet. Fa lies down nearly out from the effort of the last attack but she has a smile on her face.

"Growlithe is unable to battle, Balmund and Dunsparce are the winners!"

Congratulations to Balmund and Fa. You've finally won a battle (weh hey!), I knew you would eventually =p. You did really well here and were all over Blaze and Thrain. You were lucky that you didn't KO Fa with the Horn Drill as its a heavy energy move but despite that you used your attacks well to not only drain Blaze of health but energy too.
For her victory Fa receives this . She also receives two levels.

Commiserations to Thrain and Blaze, you were unfortauntely overwhelmed by some great strategy from Balmund and some bad luck from the Paralysis (with Serene Grace's effect too. Keep up the efforts hon and you'll win the next one I'm sure. Blaze receives 1 XP for participating in the battle.

They had won! For a moment Balmund seemed incredibly worried as Fa found herself startled yet again before being rammed powerfully towards the edge. It was a good thing he had her reposition herself again, and this time she pulled through just enough for a beautiful counterattack. Luck was indeed on her side this time around.

Balmund returns the exhausted Dunsparce back to her Pokéball. She had played enough for today, and she now needed a good rest and a bar of chocolate.

"Good game!" Balmund then extends his hand towards his rival. "I'll definitely be looking forward for a rematch man! And thanks for reffing yet again Stacey!" He then waved to the dedicated referee before trekking back down the mesa.

(Dunsparce levels up from Lv.10 to Lv.12!)

Eric shouted in alarm as he saw the Horn Drill ram into Blaze directly, pushing the Pokémon off the mesa. The referee whistled quickly, however, and a large Onix soon appeared over the edge of the cliff, Blaze perched atop its head. Running over, Eric assessed his Pokémon's injuries, finally deciding that none of them were life-threatening. Blaze's unconscious form began to stir, causing Eric to sigh with relief. "You did great, Blaze. You gave it your all, and I'm very proud of you," Eric whispered softly, patting the loyal dog's head. The Growlithe responded with a slight bark, and a small smile began to grow upon Eric's face. "Alright, man, let's get you to a Pokémon Centre." Retrieving his Poké Ball, Eric returned Blaze to its depths.

Standing up, Eric ran over to the referee and his opponent. "Thanks for a great battle," he said, extending his arm to shake Balmund's. "You had an awesome strategy and really deserved the win. Yeah, we'll definitely have to have a rematch sometime. I'll learn from this and improve!"

"And thanks for reffing, Stacey. You always do an amazing job with battles," Eric kindly inclined his head towards the ghostly woman. "Hope to see you both again sometime!"

Turning away from the duo, Eric strode back across the mesa while reliving in his mind the epic battle that had taken place.

OoC: Taking Blaze's 1 XP. Thanks!
